n.the hostel has changed address to 504 Grays Rd, Hastings hence the photos, great spot !👍. but onto my rating :
4 stars not because I've stayed here but because I've spoken to the seasonal workers staying there and I'm impressed by the ease at which they were able to find accommodation in Hastings via messenger and emails and VOILA! ready to start work! helping our rural sector out coming from far and wide to earn some money and help keep our essential industry in the market place! thank you workers! its tough enough as it is to find rental accommodation with sky rocketing rent and house prices and our Govt doing NOTHING to cap it. yet the 'little people' find a place like this to help them thru the season and keep our city bustling by spending their money here $$$
V.If you are travelling alone or with friends, this is the place to be! Everyone is so welcoming and friendly. There is a common room area with a pool table, big table for dining and a TV. The quiet room has lots of books and is nice to chill out there. In the weekends everyone likes to drink and party to celebrate the weekend! The manager also helps you find work. The bathrooms are clean and tidy and the kitchen gets cleaned every morning and night too! The manager and weekend manager make this place feel like home ❤️
H.The Rotten Apple might just be the best in the North Island! I've stayed here for 8 months while working and saving money. They have the friendliest staff and they help build a real community with people passing through. The manager, Wilna, made me feel like I was at home and there were always people willing to grab a beer, cook a meal or just chill out with. The owner has taken a lot of care to make sure there are clean bathrooms and good living spaces.I would stay here again in a heartbeat!
E.As soon as I arrived, I felt so welcomed and comfortable. The place is great to stay in for a long period or even for a short stay. The kitchen, the rooms, the bathrooms are very clean and all.
And the managers are the best. They are beautiful, helpful and smiley people who give all their intention on what you need.

J.Rotten Apples is an awesome hostel to choose for your stay in Hawke’s Bay! You will be welcomed from other guests and staff from day one and quickly become apart of the family. I’ve met some of my very best friends in this hostel. It’s in the CBD so you’re only a block or two from food, shops, and the best lil bar in the Bay.
At its peak time, the hostel can sleep up to 55 people. This means there’s always someone to welcome you home from work, ask you how your day was, cook with, crack open a cold one or get out of the hostel to do something in the area. (Be open to everyone that’s around this is an amazing place for cultural exchange!!!)
The manager will take care of helping you find a job quickly and easily from trusted employers around Hawke’s Bay! And the weekend manager (Or the guests) will set up parties or events, which can include hostel jam sesh (if you have or play an instrument plz bring it and play it - everyone will love you for it), costume parties, movie nights, game night etc etc. Side note - the quiet room is a special lil zone where you can take a break from the chatter and get some much needed quiet time. Take advantage of this space.
While it’s not the most beautiful place in the world, it was renovated throughout (including nice new showers!! 🙌🏼) about a year ago and has a smart TV in the common area. As well as a huge timber communal table that you’re sure to have fun times around. The people are what make your time here so special
If you like to have a drink and a laugh after you’ve spent your day working, then I can’t recommend this hostel enough! The other guests will get you through working on the vineyards or in the packhouses!!

V.Wonderfull hostel, I feel like at home here. I’ve met some of the best people in my life there and had a great time partying during the weekends. Over all it was very clean and tidy even though it can get a bit messy sometimes in the kitchen as any other backpackers hostel
S.The Rotten Apple is the place to be in Hastings. Together with the Common Room the best place! Great atmosphere and nice common area. And the best hostel community Ive ever experienced. So many memories and friends I found here. Definitely my best part in New Zealand so far. If you need an awesome place to stay and work and have the best parties on the weekends, go here!!!!
i.Without a doubt. 1 of the best hostels I have had staying in. The owner Jason is a real genuine guy and not just a normal owner he knows how it should be as he has been traveling, so he knows about working and would always offer a helping hand no matter what, since the renovation it is much much more nicer and homly, iv been here for about 11 months on and off and why I come back here each time is because of the people and the place. 2 years of traveling so far and I have never had the pleasure of staying in a hostal like this! It's 1 of a kind! 100% recommended staying here you won't regret it.
J.Ideal for backpackers looking for long term work. Great vibe and friendly staff. Facilities were not the best for the amount of people staying. If you are not in to the whole party lifestyle then this is not the hostel for you, but overall I had a good time.
h.Really friendly staff and great environment to be around. I only stayed for a night and most of the people there were long term. Really upset though that someone stole my food in the refrigerator that was labeled and only in there for a few hours. Great location being right in the city centre but don't leave your stuff lying around the hostel
j.The Rotten Apple Backpackers is certainly a special place. Facilities are definitely not the best and it's also not always well organized but the people definitely make up for it! If you're not a fan of banter stay away, but if you do you'll have the greatest time! Location is perfect and work was found immediately.
L.Stayed here for 10 weeks and had the best and funniest time. The facilities are okey but the people are all so nice and friendly.
I'm glad I stayed and had an amazing time specially the Saturday night quizzes.

N.The first impression was ... strange ... When we arrived the owner opened the door of our room and the bed was a big mess like if someone just slept in it ^^’ (he did the bed just after so it’s ok)
But no matter, we are feeling good, and thé cleanliness is not to bad 😊 there is a lot of parties so if you want to have fun this is the place to be !
