Reviews of South Sea Hotel
J.
I visited Stewart Island with 4 other friends over Christmas. Originally, we were going to do the Great Walk, but we cancelled due to the beg bugs issue, so we actually made a booking to stay with South Sea very late. We got separated into 3 different rooms - the 2 bigger rooms were fine, but the single room was very small and basic. All of the rooms were very clean though.
The food was above average. There wasn't a great selection, but the chef and the staff made a great effort to accommodate our dietary needs. And that is what made South Sea special! All of the staff were so friendly and helpful.
Our trip to Stewart Island was very memorable. Thanks South Sea for hosting us.

Here over New Years and loved the atmosphere. Friendly and efficient staff. Food ordered was received in <10 minutes and was delicious. Great that the hotel gives you the option to store a bag when away tramping on the Rakiura Track. Utilised this with no issues whatsoever, very handy. A++++

Right at the harbour side this hotel can't be missed. Used by locals and tourist it has the best selection of foods on the menu, needless to say most of the menu is fish. I had the seafood chowder which comes in half or full portion, half was enough for me. Blue cod and chips were probably alittle small in portions but tasty enough. Good place to wait for the ferry to come in and have a beer. Don't forget the IPA. Staff are friendly and helpful and certainly very busy.
S.
Great location, friendly staff, wholesome atmosphere. Quick word of warning that the meals at the restaurant are 90% vegetables and 10% meat, but very tasty all the same. Would visit again.
n.
My burger tonight was nice and so was pizza the other night but mum didn't really porkbelly wasn't that good through been a bit tough and too many peppers. But it always seems rather popular but maybe due to it being the only pub or having a monopoly on the island.
D.
Great location as you feel like your on the middle of it all (literally are lol). I also liked the lounge looking over the bay.
Yes its a little outdated and can see reno if getting done, but adds to the character of the place.
Shower, linen, and amenities were clean which was a bonus.
Loved how they also allow you to leave your bags there after checkout to keep exploring.
J.
Great to experience the atmosphere of the pub, have a drink and take in the history of the building. Very authentic to island life. Pretty basic kai, as expected at a pub. Worth a drink.
C.
Stewart Island was magical. I stayed in a studio unit. Everything you need and the shower was brilliant. The staff were wonderful so kind caring and compassionate. Gorgeous out door area. Be warned the dawn chorus may awaken you at 4.15am
G.
Only used the restaurant/ bar. Food very good especially the blue cod. Some craft beers on tap.
Also do a nice coffee in the morning.
N.
Went for a meal. While the food was nothing exceptional, the staff were fantastic. Being NY's eve, it was very busy but they were attentive and caring to customers.
S.
Visited the restaurant in May. Not many places open at time of the year, but this place didn't disappoint! Delicious, generous portions. Menu may have changed since.
C.
Probably the most convenient place to go for lunch or dinner since it’s right by the wharf and impossible to miss, just a tad expensive but the food satisfies. I got a chocolate banana bread. Also a great place to rest and chat.
S.
Being the only hotel on the Island, exceptional food and service. We didn't stay here but had morning tea and dinner, might I add Crayfish so make your booking you'll luv it!
G.
Ticked this hotel off my bucket list. Fantastic place, great atmosphere, great food, awesome service.
Recommended.
S.
They were amazing! I'm floating on cloud nine. Best crayfish ever and the salad was so good!
G.
Got to the pub at 1030 before a big hike. They accommodated us and made a beautiful breakfast (with heaps of hashbrowns) even though the kitchen was about to close. Waitress was kind and had a cool mask.
J.
Tidy rooms, ours had a fantastic view to the seaside balcony area.
Quite noisy but it is above a pub so that's to be expected.
S.
Enjoyed the food but the service lacked. Asked once if we would like drinks. Never approached again. Plates not collected until after we left and no waitress came and offered dessert. This happened two nights in a row. Left a little disappointed
C.
Excellent meal of fresh blue cod fish n chips and glass of wine 👍😊
K.
Great pub, great meals, lovely atmosphere. I absolutely love sitting out on the picnic tables looking out over the bay, even if its raining its still bloody beautiful
M.
Had a beer and a very nice meal while watching the Prada cup on TV ✔️✔️
Returned on 8/11/21 had two meals in restaurant, food was great but service was lacking, both times we brought drinks through from the bar but we were not asked if we would like a refill. 1st night we were not offered desert, we mentioned that to the staff, Next night same thing once we had 1st course we were ignored, even when we stacked our used plates nobody cleared the table or offered desert.Pity really as two of us had decided to have desert but after half hour left without bothering.
A.
Great food, cheap drinks - what more can you ask for? 🙂
e.
Excellent staff, very accommodating! Love this pub. Good food
F.
Yummy fresh seafood. Wonderful staff. Stirling effort on New Year's eve. Well done team!
W.
We didn't stay here but we ate here twice. Restaurant is busy so you have to book. The blue cod was simply superb. One of the best meals I have had anywhere. As an aside, how many pubs in NZ have sold out restaurants and a busy bar on midweek nights? It was mid May, not exactly tourist season although us grey haired NZers are doing our best.
Pretty busy at lunch time too.
Great food, great service.
R.
Seafood chowder is delisious.Buger and chips are a let down with the plastic cheese.Go early in the holiday or you wont get a seat.Good for a visit.4square is epic.
C.
Not overly inviting from the outside but what a delight with in. Seafood galore and friendly hospitality made for great evening out.
B.
Very reasonably prices for dinner and breakfast. Lovely views of the harbour. The hub of the local community.
P.
A classic style pub with a restaurant meals attached. Wonderful history behind this place but it seems to be booked out very early most of the time. When we visited there was live music playing although the bar section was very crowded with no seating space available. The dining area was quite cramped, and the meals were fairly typical. The Kai Kart next door we found to be better tasting and value, Although that said - we certainly enjoyed our meals. The staff were polite and attentive. My wife found her wine glass to be extremely small and expensive for the amount she got. Deserts were expensive but extremely delicious. There was an unlisted kids sundae which was much more reasonably priced for the children. Would definitely eat here again although it would be better on a quiet night (if there is such a thing at this clearly central location of the township.)
R.
Excellent friendly staff who went the extra mile to make sure we were looked after on a very busy weekend on the island. High quality sea food as well
A.
The pub is the social hub on the island. It’s a great old fashioned pub, dining room and accommodation.
We didn’t stay, but went for lunch and dinner several times. The beer is good, the wine list has a nice range, and the menu is delicious! The prices are fantastic - not what you’d expect from such a remote spot. I’d even call it cheap!
The service was excellent, and even though they were absolutely slammed with customers during a very busy time, the team were very friendly and professional.
The hot tip is to time the visit for the Quiz Night. It’s a great way to spend an evening, is entertaining and fun, and just a bit hard...
M.
Great views. No kiwis located. Self walks. Took a swim in the bay. Electric bikes fun in group. Hotel warm. Snow/sleet yesterday. Doc folk great. Museum really interesting and week put together. Boat/Cat great trip. Read the info packs so you get what you want to cover ticked off. Clear sea. Weather wet, cold and windy ish. Great time by all our team
Thanks
B.
Good lunch, service was OK solid but not spectacular
S.
Studio rooms were awesome especially after tramping!! Food at hotel was delicious and service was great!!!
J.
South Sea Hotel has atmosphere and a true Kiwi style. Relaxed and fun . We came for a drink and the next night returned for a meal and the pub quiz. All good and the accommodation looked nice.
Very central on the waterfront near the school and looking out to the South seas with a westerly component. Parking outside and easy to work to.
2stories high it stands twice as high as most other buildings. Easy to find in Oban.
D.
Nice seafood meal and cool beer. Nostalgic visit back.
E.
Beer is cheap, combined with the occasional happy hour, free Friday night nibbles. For 6 nights bar and restaurant packed. Ate here for 5 nights and enjoyed each meal. Recommended when on Stewart Island.
D.
Late booking for dinner on New Years Eve, and thankfully they could squeeze us in. Our waitress was awesome. Service was faultless with delicious meals ordered and delivered quickly. But at no time did we feel rushed.
B.
The only pub in town. Great location. Friendly service, basic pub grub. Reasonable prices. If you want to attend the famous Sunday night pub quiz get there early, it was wall to wall when I was there two hours before start time.
M.
The South Sea Hotel is the place to be, especially on a Sunday evening as it's "quiz night" (not to be missed for a laugh and to meet the locals). This historic Hotel is well presented and tells a lot of stories of times gone by. The staff are very friendly and super helpful, have a good knowledge of the Island, what to see and how to get there. The dining room has a good selection of three course meals (great seafood options - fresh from local fishermen daily) or a juicy steak to full the puku. Pub meals are also a great option for eating at the bar, al fresco or to takeaway.
I use a wheelchair and the management and staff were very accommodating, giving me more room at our table in the dining room, but I didn't get to the bar as the place was chocka full (quiz night).
Wheelchair toilet is down the hallway, and ample room to manoeuvre my wheelchair when in the stall. We didn't stay overnight as rooms were all full. A very present meal in quaint surroundings, and lovely helpful staff. Arohanui the South Sea Hotel 🦼
M.
Lovely food. The Fish ( Blue Cod )
in batter with chips was fresh as you can get. Stewart Island is a must visit.
S.
Warm, clean, traditional pub with amazing views of Halfmoon Bay. Lovely staff. Suggest booking restaurant for your stay, as it fills up quickly. If you miss out, same menu is available in the bar - just no table service, which suited me fine. Walking distance to ferry terminal and all of Stewart Island Rakiura's amenities.
T.
The view is spectacular. The rooms are comfy at a great price. The staff are awesome friendly and helpful. The meals are tasty as. Big ups to the team. We will return. Worth every penny.
T.
Staff are friendly and the prices are reasonable. History is proudly displayed on every wall. Great selection of merchandise, ask at the bar. I recommend doing the Sunday night quiz... get there early or else you'll be standing.
C.
I only came to eat at the restaurant for lunch and I was not disappointed, I had the cod fish and chips and it was amazing, the fish was wonderfully cooked, crispy batter and still succulent flakes of fish underneath - fabulous. It also came with a good salad and chips - good portioned plate. Good price for the quality. I went for lunch but noticed dinner reservations were already full so perhaps come for lunch if you haven't booked for dinner.
J.
Had dinner and beers here twice. Nice busy atmosphere and friendly staff. Some good beers - we had jugs of Emerson's pale ale. Good pizza, but don't get the burgers unless you are ok with those slices of cheese that come wrapped in plastic.
E.
Great service, fresh seafood, highly recommend
J.
Warm great friendly place. Great food. Hubby had a burger and I had some soup just what we needed on a cold southern island, great views
B.
Awsum place great service freindly staff and lovely food with a great view of the bay..
M.
Stunning location. Excellent food (I had the trio of salmon).
Great service.
Friendly locals.
Worthwhile travelling to Rakiura Stewart Island just to sit in the dining room and watch the sunset.
G.
Hotel was fully booked so took a house they had available and had meals at the hotel. Great food, friendly people courtesy bus. Very helpful in making suggestions about what to do. 5 stars all round from me.
B.
I went here 5 nights in a row. 1st night we won the pub quiz and had 2 meals show up late and one need to be reordered, next night 2 more meals had to be reordered. They then doubled our quiz prize and made a point to watch out for us and never made a mistake again. Best pub, hotel, bottle shop, and restaurant in Oban. Felt like home.
B.
Great food, drinks and hospitality
E.
Had a good family dinner. But the highlight was entertainment provided by 'Friday' he really gave us the true local Hospitality to start of our three night stay. He sounded like Johnny Cash too 🎶☝️
L.
We visited this place a few times whilst on Rakiura. The food is nice and there is a good drink selection. The Sunday night pun quiz is a must. Get there from 5.30 to grab a table. The quiz starts at 7.00pm
P.
Amazing location,friendly staff,great room
R.
Stewart Island’s only pub, cafe, and restaurant all in one. A great meeting place at any time of day or night, where you’ll surely bump into friends and locals. But lack of competition doesn’t mean lackluster quality — the food and drinks are still quite good. Hearty portions of tasty food. Sunday night Pub Quiz night is a lot of fun, a local tradition. Located right on the edge of Halfmoon Bay, the outdoor seating area offers gorgeous views and the sounds of crashing waves. Just a moment’s walk from the ferry. Sample the daily dessert specials, too — they’ve mixed up some creative combinations, like a mixed berry spin on pavlova, the traditional New Zealand favorite. Also try the melty fudge brownie or the apple cinnamon crumble, both of which are sure to comfort the hungriest of travelers.
D.
Baked cod was served luke warm and watery. Seafood chowder luke warm. Blue
Cod and chips were good. But had better.
K.
My wife and I didn’t stay here but we had several meals and coffees, the restaurant dinners are absolutely first class not at all like normal pub food, we were very impressed and would recommend booking early
L.
Really comfortable, we stayed in the studios. Clean and well stocked with towels, kitchen and bathroom supplies. It was warm which was great because the weather was cold and raining 2 of the 3 days we were there. Really central location. If i go back id happily stay there again. Only gripe was couldnt load the guide on the telly as poor internet..but really small gripe..i didnt go there to watch telly.
B.
Been here a couple of times, and it basically saved my stay on Stewart Island. Coffee is mostly pretty good, food is very good. You can stand up a spoon in the chowder. They bake a lot of stuff on the premises, and they bake it very well. Love the ham and cheese pretzel, also the pizza was really good.
G.
Great place to have dinner and a tasty cold beer after your adventure in the Island. It’s the meeting point from locals and visitors. Staff very attentive and friendly during Level 2 social distancing rules.
J.
Great food and drinks and friendly staff after a long walk. We had the vege pizza while participating in the famous Sunday Pub Quiz, both were a hit! The pool table is a nice way to kill time while waiting for a ferry, or the rain to pass.
M.
The hub of the community, what we use to be like before we forgot to connect as people face to face. Loved the spirit of the place. Food was yum as well.
R.
I have eaten here three times so far. The chowder passes the spoon stand-up test. The coffee is considerably better and cheaper than the crepery. I had the big breakfast, substituted salmon for the bacon and it was beyond glorious. Arguably the best option in Oban.
R.
Dinner review. Lovely food with friendly staff. A good selection of local fare and other traditional options like the beef filet I had, very nice. The teeny potato 'fries' we a bit odd and didn't really work in my opinion. Cheese cake for dessert also good. You shouldn't be disappointed no matter what you choose.
N.
Great atmosphere friendly staff excellent crayfish meals. Bathroom clean&tidy. Going back for a meal&drinks Thursday.
P.
Awesome dinner! I had the crayfish tail & hubby had the poached salmon. Delish! Thanks South Sea restaurant. Will definitely return for more, lol! 🥰
P.
We stayed two nights in Oban's historic hotel. We had a comfortable, very spacious motel unit and were impressed by the quality and variety of food in the restaurant and the bar. The"home away from home" feel of this hotel added greatly to our enjoyment of spectacular Stewart Island.
S.
We had a pretty good experience here. The location is incredible, being right on the water across from the ferry, and walking distance to most interesting attractions.
However, we had a terrible sleeping experience as our room was right above the bar, which is really noisy until about midnight, even mid-week. Really tough to get a good sleep and wake up early for the kiwi tours when music is blasting downstairs. Stay here, but avoid rooms 15 and 17 at the end of the hall.
Also, the food is excellent at the attached restaurant, but expect to basically serve yourself.
C.
lovely pub. food excellently cooked even though waitress got our order wrong and drinks didnt arrive until we were nearly finished our meal. will stick to bar side next time
A.
The best spot for my daily caffeine fix, really good coffee☕ & the wedges at lunch were fully loaded and absolutely delicious. Lots of options for vegetarians here. 🙏
J.
We stayed at the South Sea Hotel for a couple of nights after Christmas and absolutely loved it. We had 3 studio rooms which were perfect for grown up children with partners. The location is so close to the ferry, the staff and so helpful and friendly and the food was fabulous. I would thoroughly recommend this hotel.
C.
Surprising little last minute find (as my plans changed when the Routeburn Track got closed post storms and changed to Stewart Island Great Walk instead). A friendly welcome from Sylvia, easy check-in, small, clean, single room that was perfect for what I needed, comfortable bed, clean shared bathroom facilities....a little Gem on Stewart Island. Thank you.
W.
A very comfortable stay, economical too. Shared bathroom facilities and tea & coffee making. No frills single room with incredibly comfortable bed... I slept like a log every night despite the bar below. Didn't need the ear plugs after all! Delicious meal of baked blue cod on a bed of vegetables, staff friendly and helpful. The view from the guest lounge across Honeymoon Bay is mesmerising.
J.
Once again a stunning meal, not pub food as you know it. Crayfish tail, & skin on duck, after mussels and blue cod entree. Delicious meals after a hard day's effort, a just reward.
E.
I've been there in January 2015. It was not most comfortable stay (mainly because of noise from the bar) but price is according. The building is beautiful and has its own atmosphere. The room was clean, staff friendly and helpful.
The view is gorgeous, we spent several hours drinking wine and watching sunset on the second floor balcony.
Food in the restaurant is just outstanding! We loved choice of seafood dishes. I cannot wait to be there again!
C.
Such a great place,
Great people... The staff, locals and the myriad of visitors that stop by.
Great hotel... Highly recommend room 8 as it’s got its own access to the upper balcony.
And great location... Couldn’t really get any better in that respect!
Oh, and the great food. Had the cod a number of different ways there, all worked really well, especially the oven-baked version :)
A.
Our room was large and had all the basics needed, just dated. Ladies in the restaurant and bar were grumpy and seemed very unhappy in their work. Food was average and menu was limited. Only one option other than seafood on the menu offered to our group.
D.
Best pizza I have ever had highly recommend
B.
Food was okay. Garlic bread didnt have any garlic flavour to it. Steamed mussles was okay. The best dish of the night was the cheesecake.
M.
They serve waikato!! In big bottles
M.
Food and beverage served quickly with a smile
F.
We booked and ate on the Sunday evening. They had ran out of all the desserts and the lamb. My advice would be to sit down for dinner when the kitchen opens, and that Sunday is busy with the quiz. Staff friendly and portions generous. Steak a little over done from what was requested.
P.
Well I have not stayed in their accommodation but the breakfast and dinners were really lovely. Good coffee
V.
Great food at the restaurant, generous portions
Quiz night Friday, not yo be missed.

Visited the place twice during our stay, really friendly staff and the fish was delicious.
B.
Beautiful meal in great surroundings with. friendly staff
l.
Dinner with family and friends, seated 11 of us, after 8 of our party tramped the Rakiura, great wait people, very accommodating, enjoyable evening
B.
Was here at New years, busy but food came out quick just needed to be hotter
T.
Massive meals so choose carefully. Brilliant service and food.
B.
Food was okay. Garlic bread didnt have any garlic flavour to it. Steamed mussles was okay. The best dish of the night was the cheesecake.
J.
We had a marvelleous 3 nights at the Hotel with a double room upstairs overlooking Halfmoon Bay. It's a classic pub stay with shared bathrooms but plenty of toilets. We ate in the bar, the food was delicious, good coffee and it is at the heart of Stewart Island. Loved sharing a window seat with other visitors and NZ wine. The locals are friendly - if you're there on a Sunday, Quizz night is fun. Make sure you go looking for kiwi!
B.
This is the main place for eating out. Price starts at $28 for main (they have seafood chowder in bar area (not too bad for $14) this is fish and chips, it is good. Crayfish is like $50 a tail which we had split between the two of us with fish and chips - it was good. The beer is cheap tho, $6 for a pint Tui on tap. Check for specials. Pays to book a table in dining room as generally quite full.
P.
Well I have not stayed in their accommodation but the breakfast and dinners were really lovely. Good coffee
P.
Made it easy for our large group of 13 to dine (twice), friendly serving staff and great coffee. Could easily spend days on those comfy sofa's but there's nature to explore!
l.
Dinner with family and friends, seated 11 of us, after 8 of our party tramped the Rakiura, great wait people, very accommodating, enjoyable evening
P.
Still good and homey although in a dominant position. Not as overpriced as you may fear. Watching locals go around their business was a big part of the fun...
D.
My wife and I stayed on Stewart Island for 7 nights, we ate at the Southsea's hotel on three occasions. we had the sea food chowder, a steak meal, butter chicken and the lobster tail for mains. We had the fruit crumble and chocolate brownie for deserts. All our meals we excellent, portions were a good size, service was pleasant and friendly, the ambiance was just fantastic ( you cant beat being in a historic location)
E.
Great place for a pint overlooking the harbour. Evening meal food was good too apart from the dry banana bread desert.
K.
Walked straight here after 3 day Rakiura track - Beer tastes amazing!
Stopped here a number of times while staying on the island. Great dinners, beautiful view, friendly service, snack menu good - perfect with the playground and beach accross the road (where kids can hang out).
D.
The hotel/pub is small in terms of the number of rooms but the bar and dining area are seemingly always busy with locals and visitors. There are not many eating choices on Stewart Island but this is perfect for a morning cup of coffee and a pastry and/or a lovely lunch or drink. If you're a bit of an extrovert, like most friendly New Zealanders and I, you'll find daily fun just "hanging" with your new local friends over lunch and a beer, chatting about the amazing sites/sights to see around the Jurassic, totally preserved national parklands of Stewart, Ulva and other little nearby islands, Maori history and culture or maybe just maybe life in general. Not much more relaxing than that. We were there 4 years ago and again just now... and we'll undoubtedly visit again.
M.
Large restaurant. Meals are fine. Set menu with some flexibility for groups.
C.
Lovely food, not so great service. Wasn't informed of the specials of the day. Had to wait about an hour after finishing before getting table cleared and informed of desserts. Food was perfect though. Quite pricey.
P.
We ate at the South Sea Hotel Restaurant 3 out of 3 nights because the food was fabulous, the service very friendly, efficient and yet relaxed, and the view gorgeous! Booking recommended if you want to ensure a spot in the restaurant, however meals are also served in the bar and outdoors. I had crayfish tail twice! It was so fresh and delicious!!
The Hotel is a great place to relax with a drink and meet some of the locals, who are happy to share their island experiences. Quizz nite made for a fun atmosphere!
Hubby was stoked as they had his favourite Monteith's Original on tap!!
M.
Great view and nice pizza!
E.
We only ate breakfast here. Like everything on Stewart Island, it's over-priced, but given everything's price is just higher on the island, you can't judge it too harshly on this score. It's a cosy place and good spot to meet other travellers on the island. Nothing really stands out about it, but they've got a few whiskey's behind the bar and a reasonable range of options for breakfast, lunch and dinner including a couple of basic vegetarian options.
J.
Ordered drinks and bar food (fish and chips, chowder, nachos) after a wet day of bird watching. The bar was lively with fellow tourists and locals alike. Great service from the bartender. Free WiFi.
P.
Pub and accommodation was great. Slightly let down by the old lady on reception who was super grumpy. Strange when everyone else on the island is so friendly and welcoming! Don't miss the quiz on a Sunday!
S.
We ate here most nights of our stay in Oban. The restaurant manager was great. Really friendly and the food was of a very high standard.
N.
Accommodation is a bit run down, rooms have shared facilities when they could be converted to ensuite. Tea and coffee facilities are also shared not in individual rooms. Food is excellent and would probably rate 4 or 5 stars.
V.
Great food at the restaurant, generous portions
Quiz night Friday, not yo be missed.
A.
Lovely food and warm atmosphere in the hotel. Meal is good and not too expensive. Staff are nice friendly and professional. Def will back to here.
I.
Beer awesome macs pilsner food OK waitress said battered mussels dozen but 8 is not 12 meal not real hot .but hey we are here after a few years not being here .bar staff very frendly .so Great try again tomorrow night👍
L.
Didn't stay at the hotel but had many nights out for dinner at the restaurant.
The staff were great, the food was top, and the views were fantastic. Locals regularly hung out there and it was great to get to know the SI lifestyle.
B.
Had a wonderful stay here.
Staff very pleasant and food was great.
My last visit was in 1980 and not a lot has changed.
Come here an relax and enjoy the walks
R.
A nice place to stay on Stewart Island, due to the excellent location. Food was good. The standard room in the hotel itself I stayed in was a bit old and basic, but the Cottage room I switched too was very nice!
J.
Our first visit, would like to imagine it won't be our last, friendly staff, we were supplied ear plugs & you are advised to use them!!
B.
Great coffee and food
A bit disappointing that we were not able to enjoy crayfish, paua or oysters
P.
Food wasn't bad! They were busy but we sat in the bar and enjoyed our time there. There was a pair of Paradise Shelduck with their chicks just outside.
T.
Amazing views! Warm, friendly, great food and coffee/beer. This is one of the only restaurants on the island but it’s great!
L.
Tasty food, good service. Try their seafood. The cooked breakfast was also good
T.
Great kiwi pub, good beer prices, nice to sit and chill after a day of walking.
J.
Visited the place twice during our stay, really friendly staff and the fish was delicious.
C.
There aren't many options for lodging on Stewart Island, but this is certainly the closest you can get to the ferry and the restaurants in town. South Sea Hotel is a hostel-style hotel that has shared bathrooms for all guests except for their select cottage rooms. The price, however, is closer to that of a real hotel with more amenities. The guests staying in the rooms above the hotel all share one bathroom and those in the back cottage houses share 2 bathrooms (separate toilet and showers) to 4 rooms. There is an attached restaurant that is extremely noisy well into the evening as it is the only place open to grab a beer. The food is average and just what you'd expect on an island with only 400 residents and a treacherous hour-long ferry back to the South Island. We enjoyed the oysters and their chowder. The capsicum soup was a little heavy and filling and not the best. The burgers are delivered to the island frozen then reheated. There aren't many options for food on the island, and of teh three I tried, this was the least appetizing.
We stayed in a back cottage and could not hear the riffraff at the bar at night. We had a sink in our room, heated beds, a wall heater and a tv in room. There was a water kettle in the shared space to make coffee or tea. If you're visiting Stewart Island, you're here to dive into nature and this is a great place to leave your bags for the day or call homebase at night. You're just steps away from the ferries, car and scooter rentals, restaurants, hiking trails and scenic overlooks. Front desk staff is friendly along with the restaurant staff which is always a plus.
A.
Spectacular teriyaki salmon meal. Pumkin and nut salad looked good too. A few good beers on tap as well. Highly recommended.
R.
Loved it well worth the stay the customer service was awesome rooms warm and comfortable well located and restaurant has delicious food
N.
Okay place, staff was really quite rude. Felt like they were just trying to suck all the tourist dollars they could out of us while being annoyed that tourists were there. They provide ear plugs with the room... I believe that says it all noise wise.
N.
Did not stay at hotel but frequented the restaurant, and can report that breakfast, lunch and dinner all exceeded expectations. Very reasonable prices, a high standard of food and excellent service. Highly recommended.
S.
Enjoyed several excellent meals at the restaurant. Even has alcohol free beers. Lovely place
L.
Awesomely Stewart Island. The pub quiz on a Sunday night is the place to be. Food Delicious, serving size reflects the island hospitality.
D.
Every tourist who makes it as far south as Invercargill should make the trip to Stewart Island a priority. Spend a little over your daily budget and Invest in a ferry ride and night as the South Seas Hotel. So much to do when you are here: From easy short walks to experienced-only long walks, fishing charters and water taxis. Make your night at the hotel a priority. Families also.
C.
Brillant will stay again
J.
Amazing place, the battered mussels are amazing. Definitely recommend staying
T.
Massive meals so choose carefully. Brilliant service and food.
M.
Had dinner and breakfast there. Great location and tasty food. Liked dinner more but also good coffee. Will recommend!
S.

(Translated) Great choice beautiful place Australia is a mythical, ancient land of Aborigines, red sand, desert trails, strange creatures, endless plains, unusual vegetation and great thirst. Terra Australis Incognita, or South Unknown Land, was the Latin name for Australia by the first European travelers to penetrate these sites. To this day, it has already been explored and discovered, but being the least populated country in the world (2.8 people / km²), it stimulates the imagination of travelers, tempting with its exoticism, otherness and seclusion at the ends of the world.
Geography
Australia is the smallest and most secluded continent on Earth, located in the tropical zone of the southern hemisphere. The country is surrounded on the west and south by the waters of the Indian Ocean, and on the north and east by the seas of the Pacific catchment area. Australia's closest neighborhood is the islands of Indonesia in the north and New Zealand, with which it forms a kind of economic, political and military union. It is relatively low and flat land, because although the depression around Lake Eyre in South Australia drops 12 m above sea level and Mount Kosciuszko in New South Wales rises 2228 m above sea level, its average height is 292 m.
(Original)
Świetny wybór piękne miejsce Australia to mityczna, pradawna kraina Aborygenów, czerwonych piasków, pustynnych szlaków, dziwnych stworzeń, bezkresnych równin, niecodziennej roślinności i dużego pragnienia. Terra Australis Incognita, czyli Południowy Nieznany Ląd, tak nazywali po łacinie Australię pierwsi europejscy podróżnicy penetrujący te strony. Do dziś została już zbadana i odkryta, ale będąc najmniej zaludnionym krajem świata (2,8 osób/km²), pobudza wyobraźnię podróżników, kusząc egzotyką, odmiennością i odosobnieniem na krańcach świata.
Geografia Edytuj
Najbliższe sąsiedztwo Australii to wyspy Indonezji na północy i Nowa Zelandia, z którą tworzy swego rodzaju unię gospodarczą, polityczną i wojskową.

(Translated) We were here for lunch. Great food and friendly service. Prices are a bit on the high side, but you get that on a small island with little competition. Location great, in front the village on the harbor. Furnishing and furniture is simple but adequate. Nothing to complain about, nothing special either.
