The kitchen is clean all day and the bathrooms too. We payed $60 per day for a double private room which is a very good price for what you get. The location is excellent, in the Main Street, one block from the beach. I totally recommend this hostel.
R. O.What a great hostel! It has character and great facilities. Geoff runs a tight ship with his crew and the hard work from the staff pays off and the great results show. Jenny who was in reception was a great asset to the hostel and was very friendly and approachable. Met some great people in a place you can definitely call a home from home! I miss it already. Y. S.Awesome location at a good price point. This is a heritage building with lots of charm and vibe.
That said the room interiors could do with a bit of uplift to improve the overall experience - our room has a non functional kitchen sink which might as well be removed, random cupboards etc. Also onsite laundry facilities might be nice for travelers (complimentary would be awesome, otherwise pay to use). All in all there's potential to make this hostel a top class accommodation if it is renovated a little while keeping the art deco style.
H. N.1 night in ensuite double. Clean economy room in a hostel type hotel. Staff were very good. Original Art deco features in good condition. Large communal kitchen and huge charming lounge with pool table and double fireplace. Excellent location right in centre of town. No parking available so was a challenge to find street parking. Also be aware there are a double flight of stairs to reach the hotel floor. Good value.
N.Great price and location. Even better than that is the management's process for dealing with harassment from other guests. I reported a catcall from another guest after it happened right in the dining room, they promptly checked footage to identify them and removed them from the premises. Definitely made me feel a lot safer and the discomfort this other guest caused me was recognized and remedied immediately. Was pleasantly surprised and eternally grateful for the priority given to these reports. Amazing staff and owners. Best wishes to the business!
C. M.The criterion was built as a luxury hotel in 1932, and it shows. Sure, things have changed over the years. The net on the ping pong table is sagging a little. The dart board is on the floor, leaned up against a wall. There's a shopping cart parked at the end of a hallway. Mysteriously, the living room bookcase has every Stephen King book EXCEPT for The Shining.
But the grandness of a decades past remain. Wide corridors and large windows. A kitchen large enough to feed a rugby team. Deep-pile carpets and a sun-drenched balcony overlooking Napier's main square. If these walls of this hotel could talk...
It's also pretty clean, and the beds are totally fine. So do yourself a favour and treat yourself to the Criterion.

R. T.Good cheap accommodation in the centre of the town. Old hotel turned bunkhouse with the choice of a private room, double or twin, with or without bathroom. Friendly helpful staff. Great shared kitchen and dining room. Pool table in lounge w balcony overlooking the corner and shops. Close to the ocean and famous SoundShell.
Recommended if largely on price as it's an aging building.

L. P.This is the loveliest hostel I have stayed in in New Zealand. The entire hostel is cleaned multiple times every day, the kitchen is always very clean and there are plenty of pots and cutlery to go around.
Kay is truly a wonderful lady and looks out for all of her guests whether you're staying for one night or 4 months. I also love how sociable the hostel is - everybody talks to everybody which is particularly lovely after a long day of work.
In terms of work, the hostel is in a brilliant location for any type, but most particularly hospitality. I got a job the day I arrived in Napier and have heard similar stories from other guests.
The Criterion feels like a home from home and I recommend it to anyone travelling around NZ. Napier is a beautiful town and the Criterion adds a sense of family to that.
N. D.Great location. Super central - very close to shops, restaurants and cafes. Also just a stone's throw to the ocean. The room was adequate and the price was definitely right. The kitchen was big and the shared common area had pool, table tennis and a TV.

P.would highly recommend to stay over christmas !! we had a huge lunch with all people from the hostel and everyone cooked dishes from their own countries!! the owner brings a lot of meat for everyone and its like your a big family. the kitchen is a little bit to small for all the people but the rooms are okay and theres a big lodge with a pool table and a balcony where you can enjoy 1-2 beers.

L. M.My reservation was not there when I arrived even though I had a confirmation, and the hosts were not so welcoming. The hostel is in a great location in the CBD and the building has so much heritage but it is missing some love. Small things like light bulbs not replaced, or a nail used instead of a lock on the bathroom door, and cleanliness could be better. The wifi is only in common areas but is still weak. They do offer free breakfast for all guests including toast, cereal (weetabix) and tea and coffee.

G. S.Great backpackers located in central Napier just minutes walk to the beach, bars, cafes, and grocery stores. Kitchen was large enough for the number of people and includes continental breakfast. Rooms got a little hot at night but were ok with a breeze. Fast and free WiFi in the common areas. Would definitely stay here again.

L.The actual hostel itself was pretty nice, nice friendly staff, reasonable facilities and cleaned to a good standard.. free WiFi was good but didn't work in our bedroom, only the common area.. there was a free breakfast in the morning which was just basic cereal + milk and bread + jams, nothing spectacular but a really great little touch.. the actual building was inkeeping with the art deco style of the town and so really interesting and quirky however it was very warm when we went there in summer and the street it is on was so noisy with loud cars and people making noise.. we did really enjoy the stay there but didn't get a great deal of sleep.

Everything is always very clean. The bathrooms and the excellent showers. The rooms are fine but the mattresses are very uncomfortable, very thin. The attention at reception is excellent. Cocina amplia con todo los necesario. Excelente espacios en común, comedor y Living. La ubicación es ideal, en pleno centro y a una cuadra de la playa. Siempre todo está muy limpio. Los baños y las duchas excelentes. Las habitaciones están bien pero los colchones son muy incómodos, muy finos. La atención en recepción es excelente. El wifi es muy malo, se cortaba la señal todo el tiempo.

Das Hostel befindet sich im Kern Napier's und 3 Minuten entfernt vom Meer.
Der Inhaber ist sehr freundlich sowie seine Mitarbeiter.
Die Küche ist sehr sauber , es gibt einen Billardtisch,Tischtennis,zwei TV'S und Sofa's am Kamin von dort aus gelangt man auf den Balkon mit Blick auf die Fußgängerzone.
Zimmer und Bäder sind sehr sauber.
Sehr empfehlenswert.

Bien situé au centre de Napier, auberge spacieuse avec une grande cuisine et un grand lounge. Vous avez également un billard et des jeux pour vous divertir. Malheureusement il y a quelques aspects négatifs. La "réceptionniste" semblait fatiguer et nous a un peu expédié lors du check in. De plus, il y est noté que l'hôtel a un parking malheureusement c'est celui de l'église où il te conseille de ne pas te garer car ce n'est pas sécurisé(donc on peut se garer dans la rue mais c'est payant jusque 17h). D'autre part, on a réservé dans une chambre de 8 on se retrouve à 10, pas de prise du côté de notre chambre (penser à la rallonge et la multiprise) et la wifi n'est pas de qualité (on ne l'a capte pas dans les chambres, et le signal est faible dans certains espaces commun).De notre côté, la propreté de la salle de bain était négligé nous sommes donc aller de l'autre côté de l'auberge.
