The ribs were tasty, tender, plentiful and succulent!!We wouldn't hesitate to return to try more of the Prince Albert's menu. Thanks guys, we can't recommend you highly enough.
F.Big shout out to the bar staff! Had great chats and they had great advice of where to go in Nelson. Good food at the bar as well. Good shared 6 bedroom rooms, only downside is that there is no AC so in summer it can get a touch hot however you can leave the bathroom window and door open to ventilate the room a bit.

B.Stayed in my share of backpackers in and out of Nelson. This place by far had the best for general welcoming vibe, friendly staff, discounted meals & drinks 😁 and the double rooms with private bathrooms at a great weekly rate.
When covid made its way to Nelson recently affecting numerous business The owner Mike handled the entire 10 day icolation, managing us and our needs along with 17 other guests with great patience and respect even while under the strain of being stuck here with us away from his family unable to to operate the bar/resteraunt/hostel for 10 days.
This place was actually the highlight of our entire 6 months in Nelson as we did not seem to have much luck settling in there at all.
I wish Mike and all the staff at the prince Albert well, and thanks again for everything 🙏
J.Excellent. I'll be back as Arnie says. Had a double ensuite for less than a single at YHA Nelson. Rooms above the pub. Like the pub in the old Blue Heelers Aussie TV cop show. Watched the cricket outside in covered patio. Had a feed and a drink and walked upstairs for a shower & bed. Great. If they offered breakfast I'd buy it. Lots of great cafes in Nelson nearby on Hardy St so not an issue though. Quiet street it's on and has off street parking. 👍
N.DINE IN RESTAURANT:
WHY: I choose Prince Albert Bar and Restaurant as the photos online made it look beautiful, reviews were up there, and due to the late 8 pm dining. Just me and my husband.
SETTING: An older type 2 story typical pub building, that has Restaurant, Bar and Accommodation. There was no separate restaurant.
ATMOSPHERE: Some patrons being locals and chatting to the staff, which made it feel a bit homely. Being a warm night, and being a little noisy inside, we opted to sit outside in the courtyard. 4 long tables outside, only a family of 4 outside. No smaller tables for couples. Then came the push bikers through an entrance adjoined to the courtyard… so we went back inside. More a pub setting, where people can drink and be noisy.
FOOD: The Poutine Fries with gravy and buffalo mozzarella was to die for!! The Guinness Lamb Shank with mashed potatoes and vegetables were alright. The special dish of Kingfish…. The kingfish was dry, so did not get eaten, but loved the vegetables (zucchini, carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, asparagus, and potato chips).
SERVICE: The service was slightly above average. The male staff member was very friendly when we were paying the bill.
OVERALL: Somewhat disappointed… Photos were deceiving. High-lights – Poutine Chips and vegetables. We will come back… but not as a couple.

J.Rooms modern, clean. Pub is great, small premises but really good food, fair prices, 20% discount for drinks and food if you stay in the backpackers. Great pints. If there's a game on they play it. Main pub area feels like a big dining room, quite cosy when it's quiet. Only downside was toilet seat broken in my room's ensuite. Whenever I'm visiting nelson, this is where I go.
L.The bar and restaurant really is a five star here, the accommodation was okay. Although our room was clean and tidy, the bathroom was a bit cramped for the tall husband and he didn't really fit into the dome shower. Because we checked in on Easter weekend (NZ legit shuts down over Easter) and it's run by a family, orientation was minimal although we were told that we could phone them if we needed anything. I wasn't sure where the kitchen was and whether we were allowed to use anything. Most things seemed to be marked as personal items by (what I assumed were) long staying guests, so we just bought coffee and breakfast in town. Walking distance from everything and it's in a quiet residential area with off street parking. The bar and restaurant were amazing - classy and cozy.

D.Small hostel connected to a great bar. Had some cleanliness issues with the sheets and kitchen, but overall had a great two days and the staff handled my concerns with speed and professionalism. It had one of the best free hostel breakfasts I've ever seen, $6 beers and almost every sports channel on the TV to choose from, which is great. Would stay again if I'm in Nelson.
M.My experience at the hostel was average. I appreciated the large/sturdy bunk beds, but found the kitchen quite small to prep food alongside others in the evenings. I loved the morning breakfast at the bar with waffles, though food would run out too quickly. Some Staff were condescending and downright unhelpful, whereas other members of staff were lovely and open to guests. Probably won't return.

Breakfast was just cereal, bread with jam and butter, waffles, juice, tea and coffee but still it's free. Breakfast time was bit late though. between 9-10 am.

r.What an awesome place to stay,if you want a quiet place then this is it, it is a back Packers so don't expect luxuries to be laid on but you can expect excellent service from Steve and his crew,,and delicious superior meals from the chef we will be using this welcoming place again

J.The food offerings were amazing--made it difficult to chose! I had the Beef Wellington Special and my husband had Salmon in Phyllo with capers. Our friends had Leg of Lamb, so very, very tender-- slow cooked in a type of tomato sauce. Good beer-- including Guinness and an assortment of wines.

R.This was my first time staying at a backpackers and it was a great experience. Helps when your bunking with people you know. But the staff/owner were hospitable and the whole place is well setup. Best to stay in the outside rooms especially during Summer as Nelson's weather can be really hot, but they have an awesome BBQ area as well.
F.This is the best and most beautiful hostel I've ever been.
I stayed there in February 2015. The hostel is really clean and well arranged. Breakfast was included and we got fresh waffles every morning. The hostel contains a nice bar and beer garden where you get the chance to speak with some locals. The owners, a young couple, are really nice and dropped me off at the bus stop when leaving.
Besides you can use a bike for one or two hours for free.
The rooms are really comfortable and wifi was free.
E.We stayed in a private room and were very pleased to see how clean it was. Free breakfast is a win (and a very nice one) since it is not a common service at hostels in NZ. Laundry, parking and a lovely patio are included. Staff was friendly. I would definitely recommend it!
T.The backpacker is full of history, since 1888. The bar is running very popular, beer and food are wonderful. Sports channel available.
The accomodation is very basic and worth to the price.
a.Absolutely enjoyed the food yummiest pasta I’ve had in a long time, and it was home made I really enjoyed it. Really great friendly service and the rooms are lovely and modern. Thank you for a great end to our girls weekend exploring Nelson and Abel Tasman National Park
L.Stopped here for a night as part of our road trip in South Island. This place is a combination of hotel (private rooms are upstairs & upstairs space is separated by a locked door), bar & restaurant with a separate room with live music, and a hostel type space downstairs. The hotel has a private parking in the back. There is a private courtyard with adjacent to the bar & restaurant. The hotel area is separate from the bar & restaurant and has separate bathrooms & showers and kitchen. The hostel rooms are not large and have bunk beds. Although the night we arrived there was live music (which was very nice), we could not hear anything upstairs in our private room. The room and the rest of the facilities were very clean. The bed was comfortable. The room is equipped with an electric heater. The only minus is that there was no hair dryer. The shower had an adjustable shower head (can adjust the height of the shower & the angle of the shower head). There were people of various ages staying at the hotel. We arrived late and the manager/owner (who was very nice) showed us around and explained all the amenities they were offering. The hotel offers free breakfast (coffee, juice, waffles, toast, cereal), certain beer/wine is offered at a discount for those staying there. You can rent bikes free for 2 hours. The hotel also offers discounted food during lunch and dinner hours which I thought was good for a budget traveler (we stayed only for one night so we did not have any food there). The hotel is also located very close to a supermarket and many restaurants and shops.
J.Went for a function, the staff were friendly and the bar had a really nice feel to it. Some good tap beers and great outdoor garden bar. Would recommend for a nice place to eat and relax.
K.I really enjoyed my stay. The bunks in the dorms are made of solid, non- squeaky wood and each bed had its own curtain for privacy. The pub is a local haunt which gives it a nice vibe, and the staff are really helpful and accommodating.

A.The hostel has a bar at the front that serve the most delicious sea food! Staff are super friendly and are willing to help out at all times. They serve breakfast for free! The only thing I would add is a locker on each bed. There are no lockers in the rooms and rooms are always open. I come from a big city, so I had this feeling of being unsafe all the time. Nothing happened to me or to anybody during my stay, but I would add a locker anyway... Location is good. Nelson is a small town so u can walk almost everywhere. I wouldn't stay in Nelson for more than 2 or 3 days, unless you reaaaally want to switch off and rest. The hammocks in the patio are amazing!

L.Nice backpacker accommodation, solid bunk beds and clean. Pub is nice but the food was pretty average...this may be because the vegetarian option is extremely limited and sadly on the meal offers they don't bother have a veggie option....I'd recommend it for staying generally, its a nice set-up, maybe just eat somewhere else or cook your own.
W.I lived here for like 6 months in the off season, it was pretty great, made some lasting friendships, the staff were always cool about stuff, the bar and bar food is good, they have events all the time. I'd stay here again, plus it might not be right downtown but it's nelson, everything is walking distance. I miss the beer and fries. plus the beds are long enough for me, I'm 6'4, (like 194 cm).

J.A Home Away From Home!!!! Fabulous place to stay! Super clean, warm welcome and a very positive travel experience! I stayed there with my daughter in June. Location is very convenient for walking to shops and traveling from Nelson by bus/car. Mike and Nani are VERY helpful for whatever your needs are during your stay. The bar is a great place to meet new people whether you are enjoying breakfast, drinks in the evening or Trivia Night! Great food, Great atmosphere. I can't wait to come back!
A.Quicky become my favourite. Single handedly lift up my image of backpackers hotel. Very clean rooms, with good amenities. Not much options in the game room, but the bar & restaurant is stocked with good beer and food options. The outdoor area is good too. If you stayed there, you can get very cheap meal option from the bar & restaurant. And your rent includes breakfast. And please note that the creamy with a bit of oil on top is not a drink, it's the waffle batter, so don't drink it.
Q.Has great service and convenience. Also had curtains in the rooms, and bathrooms in each of the room. One of the better hostels I've stayed in, and much better than much of the hostels in Nelson
K.The best backpackers I have ever stayed at. The hostel is clean, the beds are great, the rates are a great deal, the breakfast is way nicer than expected, the wifi is free and high quality and the hosts are welcoming and wonderful. Truly a great hostel
R.We had some good local beers and enjoyed watching the Super Bowl. Plenty of tables in space, good outdoor facilities as well. Not a lot of parking around the building, though. This is a backpackers place.

R.The hostel is very niceand clean. You have to walk about 15 mins to the city centre but if you walk along the river it is very nice. The free breakfast is good and where else do you get waffles?

Mega schönes hostel hat unsere Erwartungen übertroffen. Zimmer sind gut man kann sein Gepäck sehr gut verstauen Matratzen sind bequem. Aufenthaltsplatz schön und einfach gestaltet und Frühstück war sehr gut. Nur zu empfehlen!!
