W.Our large band booked the entire venue for the Jazz Festival. I can't fault the place. Niels was an amazing host who kept us informed and tended to any need. He even socialised with us on our last night. The rooms were ideal. Bunk rooms for families and single people, double rooms for partners. The location is perfect - over the road from the Ferry Terminal and upstairs from a number of restaurants and shops. The common room is very special - unhindered views of the water and Russell, loads of cooking facilities and comfortable seating. The whole facility is clean and secure. Can't wait to stay there again next year. Thanks!
G.Great place to stay, definitely one of the better backpackers I've been to in NZ. Clean facilities and thoughtful design with curtains attached to the beds for privacy. Common area is spacious with a beautiful view!
However, the kitchen facilities need a spruce up - many of the hobs weren't working which made it difficult for multiple people to cook at a time.

It’s very well maintained and guests use the facilities in good manner.
The age range of people staying there are quite young - lots of them are staying there for a long term, working in the area.
If you are using public transportation for your travel, it’s located in very convenient spot of the area.
Tea and coffee for free, hair drier available. (bring your own toiletries) Laundromat is there too (washer and dryer at $4 each). Discount for many activities are also offered at the front desk (the opening time is very limited though).
A.Really great hostel! Large kitchen and a wonderful view from the big lounge. Beds are comfortable and have curtains for privacy. I really liked the staff. They were cheerful, ..., and friendly (I forgot the second one ;)).
M.Very nice hostel. Much privacy because of bed curtains around. Distance between the beds could have been more though; I couldn't sit up straight. Very small rooms without much space and hardly fresh air. Big common room and large kitchen. Not all the stoves worked which was a minor. WiFi was mediocre. Most of the times totally off. Location is great with nice ocean view. I would recommend it.

L.Clean, cozy, comfortable. A bit more expensive than other hostels but it is worth that. Well equipped and clean kitchen, awesome lounge whith a nice view over the bay and absolutely clean bathrooms and beds. The staff are also very friendly.
M.Best hostel I've ever stayed in, clean, spacious, great people, amazing views from the kitchen and lounge (see picture attached), well equipped, comfy beds with curtains and lockable storage space underneath, bunk beds are so sturdy they don't move or creak.. Bathroom is super clean, plenty of space in the shower with shelves and hooks. The place is simply amazing!
S.As many others have said, very nice views and a nice facility. I will add though that it it is very hot, uncomfortably so. When I checked out the laundry room late afternoon, 2 big dryers were running, and it seemed they were venting into the room, rather than outside. I have stayed at a cottage nearby for the previous week, and while it has been hot outside in the sun occasionally during the day, indoor temperatures are comfortable. At the Hakka, many rooms have very little circulation and stay hot.
M.Really nice hostel. Rooms are clean as well as the showers. From the living room you have a awesome view onto the ocean and we got to see some dolphins from there. 😄
The kitchen is also quite big. I can only recommend to stay there if you go to Paihia!
A.Clean, tidy and great location - right next to the beach! Parking is a two minute walk away in a open air carpark- not ideal when you are trying to get your luggage to your room in the rain! Staff were friendly. If you are a couple ask for room 10. It has lots of windows and is light and airy.
H.Nice double room. Very small, they make the most of the space. The kitchen was a bit small. Very busy in evenings with people trying to cook.
One of the other guests said there were other lodges in the area of better value. None of them would have the same picture window of the bay.

C.Great comms ahead of arrival and smooth late check-in process. Excellent location and the communal areas are clean, modern and spacious. The only real issue was the room - 3 bunk beds squeezed into a space that should have been for 4 people, max; it was too cramped when three of us were trying to get ready to sleep. Anyone over 5ft10 is likely to feel cramped in the beds, although they are comfortable.

P.Way chill place with chill, knowledgable staff! Very clean and well laid out kitchen. A little warm in January in the room, but that's why we go to the beach, right? The posted pics don't do it justice! A few burners on the hobs were busted...still very recommended
C.Cute private room and bath with lots of windows. A little hot but that doesn't bother me. People are friendly, common space areas are pretty nice--comfortable--great views. Location can't be beat. Cleanliness - enh. Not too bad. The reason the 3 stars? The internet is abysmal. I can't even load gmail on my laptop. The first night I couldn't get any connection on laptop at all. I have to use my 2g hotspot for basics and go to cafe to do anything that can't tolerate a five minute page load. Wifi works better on phone but cuts out. For the private room rate, I don't think I should have to go to a cafe to do routine business. UPDATE: Response by mgmt says Paihia doesn't have fast enough internet. I'm sorry my review wasn't clear--the internet worked everywhere else in town--it just doesn't work well at this lodging. If that matters to you, it's not a good value to stay here when you choose a private room over an inexpensive bunk bed.
A.This is one of the best hostels I have ever stayed at. Clean, modern, and each bed has a curtain, so you feel like you have some privacy. Everyone who works here is very nice and informative.

The kitchen is pretty new and well equipped, and there is a nice view out of the main window. Wi-fi is unlimited and pretty fast for a hostel wi-fi.

The only downside is that - There’s not much air flow as the window in our room didn’t open. Combined with the heat from people doing laundry it’s quite hot and stuffy and hard to sleep.
B.The lodge is really clean and quiet, you feel really confortable on it but they don't have air conditioning, and the dorms are really smalls! So it's just impossible to get a good sleep as it too hot.
S.The facilities in this hostel are great! However when the hostel say they have parking, it's not quite as simple as that. There are a couple roads that are free to park in (these are about a 10 minute walk from the hostel so it depends if you want to keep an eye on your car). Nearby the hostel, there is a variety of parking for limited time periods - ranging from 30mins to 240mins. This expires after 5pm or 6pm until 8am, so it's really just the day time that can be tricky if you were hoping to leave your car and get the ferry to Russell. This was the only information provided by the hostel upon check in, and the information on display in reception during our three night stay.
P.Great locations, nice rooms for a hostel. The double en suite room I was in had a cool window which ran over the bed so you could lay and look up at the stars with the curtains open. Great views over the bay from the kitchen and common room areas.
b.Great place, best views and the place is overlooking the wharf that takes people to "the hole in the rock" cruise and dolphin cruise. Located centrally. Rooms are quite good and the kitchen has a great lounge area with games and books.
M.Very nice and comfortable lodge. We stayed in the private bedroom with ensuite shower and the room was really nice! Location is great (even though it might be hard to find it first time :)) and staff very friendly and helpful
R.Me and my Partner stayed at Haka Lodge for 4 nights in a private room. The room was very clean and comfy. The communal facilities were excellent and the staff were friendly and helpful. Overall Haka Lodge was excellent value for money and it was a fantastic place to stay.

J.(Translated) I love this hostel. It was clean from start to finish, the beds were quite comfortable and had a curtain for more privacy. The staff was helpful and the costs were also clear. Large clean kitchen with even larger living area where a huge couch is installed directly under the large window front. Not only looks great but it is also very well on it. Incidentally, the view goes straight to the sea, which is perhaps 30 meters. You just have to cross the street and you can splash. Really awesome. Prices were also clear for the offered.

Ich liebe dieses Hostel. Es war von vorne bis hinten sauber, die Betten waren recht bequem und mit einem Vorhang versehen damit man mehr Privatsphäre hat. Das Personal war hilfsbereit und die kosten gingen auch klar. Große saubere Küche mit noch größerem Wohnbereich wo eine riesige Couch direkt unter der großem Fensterfront installiert ist. Sieht nicht nur genial aus sondern es liegt sich auch sehr gut darauf. Der Blick geht übrigens direkt aufs Meer raus, welches vielleicht 30 Meter sind. Man muss nur über die Straße und schon kann man planschen. Echt genial. Preise gingen für das gebotene auch klar.
