Reviews of Kapiti Island Nature Tours
J.
Just got back from an amazing overnight stay at the lodge with my 10 year old son. So impressed with the whole experience! The team were lovely, food was exceptional. Extra thanks to tour guide Anthony for making the trip extra special for my boy.
L.
Absolutely amazing experience. Great hosts full of enthusiasm and knowledge. We stayed in a glamping tent with an amazing view and could hear the kiwi call (amongst others) all night. The bird life is truly amazing and well worth the visit. The overnight stay includes delicious meals and we went on the kiwi spotting tour which was wonderful, not only did we see a Kiwi but a Little Blue Penguin. We will definitely be back!!
G.
Enjoyable day trip, good talks from Guides and information. Pristine greenery and a chorus of birds. A great escape from our crazy world.
M.
Had the awesome experience of an overnight stay. Stunning walks, views, birds and getting back to nature and all its surroundings. The guides, staff, and food was amazing and loved hearing the history. Will definately be back!
M.
Had the overnight tour there. It is one of the best tours I have ever had in nz. Host very warm and well organized, cabin comfy and clean, food delicious. Love it. Oh for the birds lovers , lot of birds even just near your cabin. We even saw the kiwi bird
S.
A magical island where not only is the scenery breathtaking, the bird life incredible but the guides and other staff are outstanding. This was our third stay at the Northern end of the island and yet the magic was still there. I can not praise the staff enough, from shop front through to guides, chef and the other people at the Lodge. Thank you.
K.
I had the most wonderful, peaceful stay on Kapiti Island. It was an amazing two days of hiking and exploring this beautiful island while enjoying amazing sights and bird wildlife. The hospitality at the lodge was beyond welcoming and I had a lovely evening. I stayed overnight in a lovely, rustic cabin. It was the perfect chance to get away from the city and spend the night in a relaxed, peaceful setting away from any technology or city noise. The food was delicious and served family style so I got the chance to get to know the lodge owner and the other guests. Thank you so much for an amazing two days! I highly recommend this tour to everyone!
M.
Unfortunately there is people sitting inside not wearing mask maybe take chairs away and they can sit in their vehicles thank you
N.
We did the tour with lunch. Definitely a highlight of our trip to the area. Throughly enjoyed the professional service from each member of staff right from booking to the check in, the boat ride over, the guide Manaki and the rest of the staff. Do the trip it's a once in a lifetime experience.
M.
Our group of 20 had a day trip to Rangatira. We chose Rangatira as it gave everyone the chance to do something while on the island, whether it was to walk to the lookout, the bird feeding station or stay around the coast. Our guides were very informative, answering all the questions we threw at them.
We heard about Kaipiti Islands history, the birdlife and birdsong.
Enjoyable day, thank you.

Cannot recommend this trip highly enough - and do the guided tour if you possibly can. Plenty of time to explore, just great to have some history of the island and some understanding of the wildlife before heading off. Here's something cool - Kereru have Right Of Way on the track - and they know it! Pretty exciting walking along then suddenly whoomph-whoomph-whoomph, there's a Kereru in your face. Our guide was Wayne, who is something like 6th generation Maori on the island. Very informative and friendly. Great lunch too, just a good lunchtime spread like you'd have at home - no boring deep fried rubbish. I'll definitely be back.
A.
We had a phenomenal night hosted by Kapiti Island Nature Tours, a family who have been on the island for many many generations who are clearly in tune with the land and wildlife. The island was teeming
with birdlife - the whole experience from learning more about our local flora, seeing kiwi in the wild, to the food and accomodation was all spectacular. Highly recommend for something special.
L.
Very peaceful.
Excellent food and we saw a kiwi on our night walk.
The trails are beautiful and the guides are helpful with local knowledge and suggestions.
We stayed overnight in a cabin and it was comfortable and well appointed.
E.
It was an absolutely fabulous day. Glen and his team were so friendly informative. Loved the walk. Bush, birds and being in a really special place. Thanjs for a great day
D.
Great Experience we did the North end got the trip over (09:00->15:00) and booked a place in the guided tour. We brought our own lunch with us but you can get a package all inclusive. Some level of fitness needed to complete walk around the loop, but very doable if you don't rush.
This is a wonderful place especially for nature lovers, we did the guided walk this a must, the local guide informs about the conservation, geographical and social history, and most importantly what to look out for and where to find it during your few hours on the island.
Highly Recommended.

Wow, what an amazing day my kids and i had!
Can't believe it has taken us so long to get to this treasure in our backyard.
Thankyou Glen Cooper for what you are doing.
Thankyou for you care getting us over and back safely. The boat is comfortable and so easy to get on and off of.
Thankyou to Robert, our guide on the island. You knowledge and enthusiasm of the island and inhabitants was priceless.
It was so amazing to hear the bird song and to be able to see them up close was just cool!
The bush and surrounds are also stunning.
How sad to think that this used to be how NZ was but the work done by the Conservation department is just mind boggling.
I highly recommend taking a trip with Eco Tours.. especially to all New Zealanders to understand better the unique place we live in!
D.
Never have I seen such beauty in our country, who knew an island with only birds and insects could be so engaging?! We had a wonderful guide who shared her family history with us, I adored the historical nature of the tour.
J.
Great day out, beautiful island with abundant wildlife. One of the highlights was the fascinating talk we had upon arrival. Will stay for a weekend next time, as there is much to see. Lovely staff and experience.

Would just like to say how much I enjoyed my trip to Kapiti Island on the 17th of February. I was first introduced to Kapiti Island directly in March 1977 when I airlifted some building materials out to the Island. It was the most beautiful day and I have always wanted to go back. Never made it until by chance I overheard a conversation about a group going out and I was able to join in. By sheer chance it was my 70th birthday. My daughter rang with birthday wishes and another of the party heard the call and passed it on. After arriving we all went for a hike and then met for sundowners and snacks around 1830. The people had gone to the trouble of making me a cake and I would like to say thank you for being so thoughtful. It was a very much appreciated gesture. It was a very nice cake too! A very good welcome and briefing by Manaaki, who was our main contact with the tour operators. He's articulate and knowledgeable and a very good front man for the operators. The food and drink was plentiful and good. The evening meal was quite simple and I don't mean that badly at all. Tasty and good food. It is very appropriate accommodation for the Island experience. Snug and sort of mountain lodge experience. The evening kiwi spotting walk was a real experience. I grew up on the West Coast in the 50s and had still not seen kiwi in the wild, but here on Kapiti, they are right in the bushes around the camp. A big thank you to Flora, our lady guide, who was very knowledgeable and good at her job.Next morning, down to Rangatira Point and a hike up the hard way to the trig station and back down the easy way. I knew quite a bit about the Island before I went, but learned a HEAP more while I was there. Lots of birds and lots of really interesting information in what I can best describe as a family atmosphere. Food and service were informal and really good in my view. Very good value for money and yes, it was just as good as I hoped it would be all those years ago.
Special thanks to Flora and Manaaki. You two young people made a really good impression and made it a most worthwhile experience.
A.
Highly recommend. The guides were excellent, they made sure everyone was able to hear before sharing information and that everyone had seen the Kiwi on the night tour.
I.
The overnight stay is a must-do. No superlatives available to do it justice. Special mentions: the rich bird-life, spectacular views, the knowledge and hospitality of the hosts. A huge bonus was the insights on history and culture from members of the whanau (local clan under whose trusteeship the tour & lodge operate) who happened to be also holidaying there at the time.
H.
What a wonderful experience. Everyone on staff was just fantastic, I was blown away by Pania's knowledge of the island, local history, and wildlife. Manaakitanga went above and beyond by giving up his lunch when he realized we'd (stupidly) left ours in the car. These folks clearly care about their guests. The food was excellent and our bed comfortable. While we didn't see any kiwi on our trip, we had a great time exploring Kapiti and discovering its other special inhabitants. Highly recommend it!
K.
Wow I am just blown away by the service and care with the time put into the island experience, we where made very welcome and nothing was too much tourble.the Island wild life was amazing an d they took great care to protect and preserve it. Our meals were yummy and whole some .the atmosphere was relaxed a family feel to it.We did glamping and it was lovely a clean and it was comfortable. Over all a great nite and a day.
K.
Wonderful hospitality during our overnight stay. This is a real treasure. Peaceful, only the sounds of birds, the wind and the sea. And we spotted a kiwi (!) and my first (little blue) penguin.
M.
Amazing wild life, the hiking was very nice, the food was just wonderful and so was the interactions with the other visitors, who I made some friends with. I loved the whole experience and I would diffanatly recommend a trip to Kapiti Island.
D.
I really enjoyed my trip to kapiti island and stay with the nature tour people and guides. They really look after you well and are happy to help with anything or answer any questions you have. The only negative thing that I have is with the cafe in Paraparaumu was the service where I had a light snack which is totally different from a light breakfast. Every thing was included and paid for as part of my tour. The light breakfast was only a hot drink and either a muffin or a scone. Which to me is a snack to me a light breakfast is toast and fruit and a drink. I had to wait and then have my drink in a takeaway cup as the service was so slow. The tour people told them I was coming as well. Otherwise I would have been late for my tour and boat.
R.
Really awesome day out. Great guide who provided great context to what we were seeing through the natural and human history of the island. The lunch was also a really nice way to break up the day. Highly recommended.
A.
If it is relaxation you are after with a touch of nature then this place is for you.
The hosts are amazing and will put on a fantastic dinner and breakfast than can't be beat.
There are walks available, dozens of New Zealand's native birds to see and an atmosphere that can't be beaten
N.
Brilliant day on the island and excellent overnight stay, very glad we did the overnight trip. We didn't shoot any kiwi but we did enjoy the song of the elusive Kokako. Highly recommended!
E.
A must for conservation enthusiasts. Definitely recommend stopping at Rangitahi and walking the trig, then staying the night at the north end. We were totally spoilt. Saw all the birds we dreamt of seeing, including the saddlebacks, bell bird, brown teal and little spotted kiwi. The history of Kapiti Island is rich and the experience was a total privilege.
B.
Awesome experience, spotting all the birds and the amazing views. Manarki (?) in particular was an awesome guide, very knowledgeable and funny. Definitely try to stay a night to go ninja hunting for kiwis!
R.
Entertaining and well informed host, excellent food at the lodge, huge array of birds to see, whiteheads, Saddleback, kaka, bellbirds, tui, weka, spotted kiwi, falcon, wood pigeons, wading birds etc. Lovely bush walks and terrific history.
A.
I went yesterday with my work colleagues and it was a beautiful experience!! I will definitely be going again :) Loved it! Saw a lot of beautiful birds and scenery.
J.
We had a awesome day and I wished we had booked the overnight stay . But we will come back . The Lunch was very nice and tasty.
C.
Wonderful back to nature and early NZ life. Hosts were really great and the location perfect. Plenty to eat. Plenty to do.
R.
Loved the fast boat ride to the ocean.
D.
Great service, the guides are very knowledgeable of the history of the island. Great opportunity to see native birds I'm their natural habitat.
S.
Most enjoyable, delightful, loved it, but as we were glamping, it was very noisy during the night from the various bird life, penguins, wekas etc
P.
Great experience, Manaaki was a friendly and knowledgeable guide and the kai at lunch was beautiful! Highly recommend
M.
Still can't believe that i get the chance to stay one night there, our guide Tanja showed us 3 times the kiwi, the island for itself is one of the best places i stayed, the food from Vicky outstanding, get´s very cold at night but beds are cosy and warm, hiking up the mountain you will see all the birds you want to, or just sit in front of your hut, they pass bye, thank you
S.
Such a brilliant time. We stayed for two nights. We were so well looked after. Lovely food and fascinating conversation.
A.

(Translated) An absolute highlight on my New Zealand trip. A tour to the small Kapiti island with numerous native wild-living birds. I booked the overnight trip and it was worth every penny. The food was fantastic and the local people were super friendly. In the late evening there was a small tour with red light and we were fortunate to see even two kiwis 🥰 it was very nice.

(Translated) Beautifully preserved island with special bird species for walking. Various walking routes possible, including a beautiful route of about 2 hours to the top of this island. Also well worth the overnight stay. Delicious eaten with traditional dishes and in the dark with guidance go hiking to see kiwis in the wild.

(Translated) Spotting kiwi is quite difficult. They are rather shy animals, but we have seen them. There are also beautiful hiking trails, a paradise if you love nature and birds. The accommodations are simple at the same time, again this is a great experience.

Kiwi spotten is best lastig.
