We were here for just over 1 month. The manager was super helpful to us(including my partner and baby daughter) and always said goodmorning.
The room we were given however, was way too small for the 3 of us so it's built more for single people or a couples stay. Oh, and the other thing is that the kitchen is tiny so you'll probably end up purchasing takeaway while there.
Other than that, we are grateful as it provided us with the basic necessities of shelter and amenities.

Staff friendly, room was huge and above entry with view overlooking street.
The hotel has character and the room had been slightly modernised however the old parts are part of its charm. Free parking. Thank you.

Great place. Very clean and tidy.
They even put electric blanket on as I got in late and it was freezing day.
Definitely stay again next time I'm working up that way.

I was a 8 yr old child, way back very early 1960's my little girl friend Christine Mckechnie's parents managed it those days it was called the Commercial hotel, they had stewards, uniform, complete with gloves, so
Amazing, and the big staircase and the brms loved so much the dinning room, starched table cloths, it was grandeur. I just wanted to stay forever. Christine and i were sat in the huge lounge one of the streward would present us with the big tin of Sampler biscuits, and we could choose from that also two lovely glasses of ice lemonade
It was fab because people in Putaruru were not well off, my Dad worked on the railway
My mother worked sewing garments at Waltons
I am so glad the new lady is in the process if restoring it. Oh yes the pub on the side of t jh e hotel, yep 6 o'clock swill.
Great memories we didnt have much but hey we were happy

Dinner was edible, my husband totally enjoyed his lamb Shank, they ran out of mashed potatoes, we had potato gratin, It was most enjoyable..Dinner was filling, tasty and the wait wasn't to long,.. The chef and waitress were very friendly and helpful.. The ambience was a little tired, but clean..Dinner was reasonably priced, $33. For my steak and $27.. for hubbys lamb shank we will definitely go back.

Stayed a few nights here. The owner is Gentleman with a great eye for detail. Unfortunately we caught them amidst renovating the hotel so most areas were cordoned off to patrons. My check-in hostess had a few customer service skills that needed work as she didn’t inform me that my key had the entry pin for after hours, didn’t tell me the Wifi password until I asked and room cleanliness was somewhat to be desired as I had to ask for clean linen etc.. Overall, my son and I enjoyed our stay aswell as the the close walk to town and food in the in-house cookery. I’m sure once fully up and running this hotel will be restored to its former glory with all the bells and whistles.

Definitely one of my favorite hotel experiences. Lovely, helpful staff. Rooms are clean and simple. Communal kitchen and tea area were very useful. We made our own meals for most of our stay. There is a nice restaurant next door and the bar is populated with super friendly locals. If you are looking for a commercial-type posh luxury hotel, maybe this isn't your place. The building is old yet stylish. The place has heaps of character and guests and staff were awesome. We will definitely stay here again if we make it back to Putaruru.

In its day this Hotel would have been a hive of activity. We could see that it would have been grand, loved the staircase. Were greeted by a friendly person which was a good start. Yes, the place is tired and desperately needing some work done on it. Our room was at the front which as it turned out wasn't the best. VERY noise, both from people drinking and talking downstairs by the Bar but the trucks coming round the corner and changing gears throughout the night was more disturbing.
In saying all of this our room was OK. The bed was good, the bathroom was very small but the shower was brilliant. Lots of hot water and pressure was excellent. There was tea and coffee making facilities in the room however, the communal kitchen was basic to say the least.
Would we stay again? Strangely enough we probably would, but in a quieter room. It has so much history and there was a restaurant on site, although the food was pretty ordinary, it had a nice atmosphere.
It was good value for what we paid ...

The hotel building itself is a lovely classic, but hasn't had much attention in recent years - all that wood needs a clean and varnish, and the paint is cheap and peeling off all over the place. Classic fittings are lovely, but not when they're so old they stop working - I had to ask for help with the bathroom door-handle. However, the bed was modern, spotlessly clean, and comfortable, and there was plenty of heat if needed, as well as good light-excluding blinds. Value for money in the parts I really needed.

Friendly staff, clean rooms with comfortable beds. Someone said this is like a classic car that needs renovation and I guess they are right. However you can see that they are trying to get this 1950's building a little more up to date whilst retaining lots of features. It will only survive if it gets into places like the lonely planet guides along with the Blue Springs.

Just enjoy a scrumptious meal at The Cook restaurant in Putaruru

The hotel looks like she used to be a grand old dame, but is suffering from a lack of upkeep, no doubt business is slower than it used to be. But it meant we got the best room (I think). There's a charming Writing Room and a grand staircase. It still retains a fading charm. Trucks and a train pass by early in the morning. The shops of Putararu are walking distance, although dining options seem to be scarce, not including takeaways.

It's not a bad pub the beer was nice & cold but the smoking erea wasn't flash use to drink there now & then when I lived in arapuni every one use to call it the Trough can get a bit wild sometime but mostly a good crowd that goes there

Excellent
Good menu, food and priced well. The cheesy pizza was the best. Good to sit outside. A must do. Not on main Street.
So you need to know where it is if you are not from the area. Absolutely recommend

This is a must stay place. The new owner Ish, is lovingly restoring it to its former glory. Rooms are warm and cosy, the food in the restaurant is excellent and well priced. Great atmosphere and hospitality.

We loved the retro experience of an authentic 1950's grand style hotel. A lovely ride to the Orakei Korako thermal area from Putaruru. This hotel had a special room constructed for a visit from young Queen Elizabeth in 1953. It was also a short walk to Putaruru Baptist Church. Good Bistro next door.

This place is rad! Loved being able to use the kitchen for our meals and everyone was friendly and helpful. This hotel has so much character and it was a great stay for me and my family :))
