Reviews of Rydges Rotorua
One of our best holiday accommodations. Kids love the play room. We enjoyed the spa pool and gym. Breakfast was good.
We enjoyed it in overall. The only thing was one morning they didn’t change the towel I put on the bathroom floor, instead they put it back to the towel rack. A corner of the towel was still wet and dirt can be seen. It was disgusting at the time and the review would be much more negative if I wrote the it at that time. I’m now remembering the good memories more than the bad.
The place is pretty dated, it has an awesome view of the steaming hot pools near by however the facilities were very tired. Our bathroom looked original from when the place was built, yellowed grouting and mould/water spots on the roof in the bathroom. The aircon did not work so great and I was pretty warm at night. The staff also seemed under the pump and many people were still waiting for rooms to be ready well after check in time. I would be looking for somewhere else to stay if I returned to Rotorua.
As other's have already said, the rooms are in dire need of a deep clean. The bathroom in particular could do with a good scrub.. everywhere! I would have thought with the prices they charge they could focus more on making sure things are cleaned sufficiently.
The room gave to us was unstayable so we went back to the check in to cancel our stay then they changed our room to a different one on the same floor. We couldn't understand how those 2 rooms on the same floor so different. 1 is ghost old level,. 1 is kinda newish. Even the newer room is around motel standard - not upto hotel standard. I was surpirised that they did not priotise the newer and cleaner room over the older dirtier room packed with dirt.
Their amenities were poor too. We found a very old banana peel from the back of the TV which was super surprising and total disgust. The receptionist seem he didn't really want to work there - he was like oh I cant be bothered to even speak normally - he mumbled like a toddler. Also we waited in the queue for check out - I've never seen a queue for checkout in my whole life.
The location is also a bit strange. Quite far from the city. I would look elsewhere if you have a choice.
Reception service was good but to have only 1 person attending a bus load of tourists was a bit irritating. Then, a man walked in who didn't prove helpful at all.
The rooms (yes rooms as we booked two) are definitely in need of a good cleaning, esp the toilets as grime are building up on corners including handwash, lotion etc dispensers.
The hotel was amazing but some of the details were a bit lacking.
The room was nice, the amenities were good and the check-in process was very smooth.
Bed was sturdy, they give you enough pillows and the hair dryer was very powerful.
There is no opening hours sign for the pool (closes at 9:30pm), they ran out of gowns/pool towels and the bath is slippery (make sure you use the anti-slip mat). My partner nearly fell and had a concussion.
I had an allergy to the shampoo but the body wash was really nice.
There was a parking officer to help us with the parking which was very nice.
Make sure you get the buffet breakfast! We got a deal with the room which made the breakfast around $22 each person. I have been to may hotel breakfasts around the world but this is the best hotel breakfast buffet I have experienced by far for this price. Definitely check it out!
We stayed at the renovated side, room view and furnishing are as advertised, very pleasant and well worth the money.
Nice attentions to details, eg, soft/firm pillows, pool towels, filtered water machine, mountain bike room and sustainability ($10 credit for skipping housekeeping). Bathroom is less updated compared to the rest of the room yet spacious and functional with drying line across the bathtub, our swimwear were perfectly dried overnight for another dip into the heated pool and jacuzzi. Staffs are very nice, courteous and responsive. We enjoyed our stay thoroughly!
We got a family room with 2 queen size beds facing the Geothermal pool with the village just behind the hotel . Room was newly refurbished and beds were comfortable. Only disappointment was the showerhead in the bathroom which is old and not working well . Couldn’t understand why it was not replaced during renovation. I took out 1 star becoz of that .
Rydges Rotorua offers a great stay with some standout features. The renovated rooms are spacious, and we appreciated being able to stay in a two-queen suite instead of needing connecting rooms. The game room was a hit with the kids, offering ping pong, foosball, giant checkers, an arcade machine, and air hockey. The geothermal-heated pool was unique, and we enjoyed the view of steam rising from nearby geysers right from our room. Breakfast buffet was included, with a wide variety and my daughter loved the croissants. They also have an on-site laundry room which is great for those with more extended stays in Oceania. There is also a bar near the restaurant.
That said, rooms overlooking the pool can get noisy when the pool is crowded with kids, and the sulfur smell of geothermal activity is constant (though that's typical for Rotorua). The dinner buffet is decent if pretty standard and kids eat for free with a paying adult. We generally opted to explore Eat St most nights for more variety.
Overall, a solid choice for families visiting Rotorua or looking to stay centrally located in New Zealand's morth island!
Flash if you're looking at the building front on. Flash lobby but the rest of the building is a little run down.
Thankfully we didn't need the heat pump going during the night as it was noisy, but it was nice to arrive to a warm room as the heat pump was going for us.
Nice warm pool. Our young son loved his first proper swim in a pool.
Also 2 spa pools.
Staff were professional.
I had a very disappointing stay at Rydges Rotorua, and it fell far short of expectations, especially for the price.| 1. TV Issues: The room’s TV barely worked, constantly glitching with a bad connection. Despite being advertised as having smart features, there was no casting option or smart TV functionality.| 2. Cleanliness: The room was shockingly unclean. There were dried noodles and M&Ms left on the floor from the previous guest. In the bathroom, there was a booger on the wall, and it was very clear the cleaning had been rushed or completely neglected. The cups provided in the room were dirty and hadn’t been washed.| 3. Reception Response: When we raised these concerns with the receptionist on duty, we were met with a sigh and were told that this is a regular occurrence that often ends up falling on him to deal with.||This level of service and cleanliness is completely unacceptable, and I wouldn’t recommend staying here until serious improvements are made.
Shannon and Audrey at the reception were lovely and helpful. Shannon was kind in helping to look for a day trip rental car and answer all queries. Audrey gave good advice on how to manage visits to places of interest. Keep up the good work.
The room was clean, bed super comfy, pretty good breakfast and friendly staff. The only thing that was disappointing was the pool area - we were looking forward to a relaxing evening dip but it was so loud and packed with screaming children until after dinner that we didn't get to enjoy it
We were there last weekend and the kids loved the hot pool and the play room.
The restaurant turned out to be a buffet. Somehow we survived it.
But it was impossible to sleep because of the loud air conditioner in our room, and in the morning the phone screen was covered in a layer of dust. What the hell is it?
Had a great time in Rotorua staying at the Rydges. Easy check in, friendly staff and the hotel was well kept from all areas we went to. Good swimming facility and play area for the kids. Didnt get to eat at the restaurant or order room service. Location great for activities within a short drive/walk.
Was a nice place. The pool, gym and games room was great..very family friendly.
We enjoyed our stay.
The buffet dinner was not worth the price.
Close to town and a good location near the geothermal pools.
The breakfast buffet lacked quality and value.
The room was OK, bit dated but not too bad.
The pool and spa was a nice area.
Yo, this place was lit! The staff was super friendly and the breakfast was bomb. The dinner buffet was a bit of a let down, but I'll definitely be going back.
Abhay in the bar made the BEST gin martini’s we have had in the north so far! And polite service
Great room. We look out onto the pool. gym. Games room. Bar. No issues at all. We will stay here again in the future.
The hotel did what it needed to but it’s definitely old on the inside and needs some work. Our room was full of patchwork fixes and poorly done finishing. They make it look quite nice in photos and by the lobby. I also think $68 for a buffet is a bit excessive, if you have kids they eat free under you which is nice. The location is nice being close to most major attractions and food.
We spend three nights there recently. The room was a good size and very clean, and we had a view of the geothermal park next door from our window. Staff were quite helpful. Parking is free, but the car park is busy and we had to park on the street one evening. Overall we were happy with our stay, the only complaint is the smorgasbord in their dining room. Frankly, it's overpriced for the quality of food on offer.
Stayed in the new renovated Delux King pool view room on the 2nd floor, nice decor with a lux feel, spacious & comfy bed.
We booked the delux balcony room. Was very comfy, clean and had a beautiful view! Highly recommend and didn't want to leave. We stayed for 3 nights, wonderful stay! Thanks Rydges😀
We stayed on the new wing and the room is modern with nice decor and furnitures. The table, wardrobe are refurbished. The bathroom is also a bit old with shower over bath.
The hotel's proximity to the geothermal park was a significant plus, with my room offering a great view of the Te Puia Geyser. This convenient location is ideal for travelers eager to explore the area. The staff members were pleasant and helpful, adding a nice touch to the overall experience. Additionally, the pool area, always busy with activity, appeared well-maintained and inviting, though I didn’t have the opportunity to use it.
On the downside, the hotel felt more dated than suggested by the website and the 5-star reviews. I booked the more expensive Deluxe King Room with a Balcony, expecting a higher quality, but found the room, particularly the bathroom, in need of an update that didn't reflect the higher cost of this particular room. While I understand that 115 rooms have been recently renovated, it would be beneficial for future guests if the booking process clearly distinguished between renovated and older rooms, as this is not currently evident from the website images.
There were also inconsistencies in room service, such as irregular towel replacement and the removal of items like bathrobes and bathroom mats without replacement. Paying attention to these details could significantly enhance the guest experience. Considering the room quality, especially for a non-renovated room, the pricing felt steep.
While my stay was adequate, there is room for improvement in accurately representing each room and ensuring consistent quality across all areas. For those considering this hotel, I recommend examining the specific room types more closely to ensure a more updated and comfortable experience, as the renovated rooms are not immediately obvious from the website.
Decent pricing, common areas were nice, but I was not happy with the room. The shower ammenities were empty and the shower wall was covered in someone else’s hair.
Beautiful breakfast and service. Highly recommend. Great pool and facilities for children too ❤️
Great service, the person on reception waited on duty until I checked in at 12.30am as i was coming from Napier. Thank you very much. Otherwise a very comfortable stay.
Regards
Steve
We had one of the refurbished rooms and it was great - plenty of space for my family and it was spotlessly clean. The beds were comfy, it’s a quiet area, easy parking and the blockout curtains did a great job. The pool and games room were highlights too
Always an enjoyable place to stay. Rooms are clean and beds are the most comfortable in Rotorua from my experience.
I've visited this place in December 2023, the food is excellent, the widest choice I've ever seen. Perfect rooms.
Beautiful room with an outlook of hot springs. Spacious rooms with 2 queen beds. I organised a surprise for my husband and arranged via email working with the staff. The communication was fantastic and the surprise platters and wine were excellent 👌. The receptionist on arrival was very helpful and friendly supporting my wishes and secrecy. Highly recommend this resort if you are staying in Rotorua
Stayed here on 06/02/2024.
Check in was simple and smooth, staff friendly and free parking was appreciated.
Overall the room appeared to be in ok condition, until the bathroom…
The shower had a used soap bar and open container left out. Goes to show the lack of detail paid when cleaned.
Also the spare toilet roll next to the toilet was wet, appeared to have been urinated on or wet via other means.
Makes you wonder how well they clean the area if they don’t even look in the shower/bath area….
Staff your cleaners better, I bet they are overworked and underpaid. I don’t view this as a reflection on them, more so management.
Good location, the pool looked good. The whole place was pretty dated and needs an upgrade. A lot of big functions happening at the hotel and a lot of young people loitering around the carpark and vaping wasn't exactly the best welcoming experience. Staff were nice and the rooms were okay, really not a fan of the bathroom. Slipped on the "non slip mat" for the bath tub/shower hybrid and really badly bruised my knee. The stay overall was fine enough and i think you get what you pay for
Friendly staff who are always ready to assist you. Their pools are kid friendly and always kept clean and the hotel regularly maintains the hygiene of the pool. Food range is great with lots of options on the buffet. We love coming here and each time it’s always a wonderful experience.
Stayed here over Easter break and the location and views were great . The kids amenities and heated pool were well maintained .
The beds were on the firm side , and the cleanliness left a lot to be desired, considering the price we paid .
