We stayed for 1 night. We loved the character and style of the hotel. The room was lovely, a touch of elegance, very spacious and clean. We dined in the restaurant and the beef wellington was exceptional. The staff are professional, so helpful and very friendly. We would definitely come come back.

One of my favourite places to stay. Picking up some maintenance is needed in the rooms here and there. Would give 3.5 stars if possible. The pool was also cool due to malfunction. Staff is amazing as always and will return again.

In all honesty, for the price you pay, it’s amazing!
Yes there is some needed updates here and there on furniture etc, but overall it’s a beautiful stay.
The place was clean, the shower was good, the pools were amazing, and the service was friendly and inviting.
I would definitely come back!

It was adequate, pretty noisy at night with people walking outside on the wooden deck, people up stairs were noisy also and that echoes in the room. They also put these very bright lights on at night to show the building which lights the room up like a xmas tree and feels like the room is in constant daylight. Other than that the staff were very nice, the restaurant was nice also. Historic and very clean

Good location to stay. Convenient to Duke's restaurant which was amazing. However I feel they can upgrade some of furnishing inside as even though the theme is more old style doesnt mean inside cannot be more modern. The door lock outside was hard to open and the curtains in the rooms are damaged. Carpet also a bit old. Overall not a bad place still to stay.

Love the rooms in this hotel, stayed twice already and would love to stay more. It is a very pretty place and so nicely central. For the second stay we have decided to have a buffet breakfast there, which unfortunately disappointed, not sure if it is due to COVID, but it all seemed to be out of packages, apart from the sausages and eggs, but they were also not so great. Would be great if breakfast was improved to fit the atmosphere of the place

I stayed 2 nights and it was great. Enjoyed the seafood chowder - try it as its really delicious. Staff were great and location is perfect for exploring Rotorua. Room was small but very comfortable and they outdoor bathing area is fabulous
K.
We stayed for one night in a one bedroom it was a great size. Location is only 5 mins walk to lots of restaurants and the pool was amazing even in the rain. When the personal service of being walked to the room from reception was a really nice touch.
A.
Fabulous traditional-style boutique hotel. A great piece of NZ history. Great to support locally owned independent hospitality. Excellent food in the restaurant. Coming back in a few months!
D.
I have stayed at this hotel multiple times over the past few months. Easy check-in process, clean rooms, friendly service by everyone there, and great location. Highly recommend and is quickly becoming my go to every time I visit Rotorua for some Mountain biking!
M. C.
Lovely Traditional High Tea. Nice scones and sandwiches. Very nice traditional tea set china. Friendly and professional service. Will be back. Recommend the hotel stay as well.
A.
beautiful place. Clean, excellent decor, nice pool, friendly staff. Just wish there was air conditioning in the bedroom.

A grand ol Prince, spacious room, very comfortable space and hotel has a lot to offer onsite , Close to all attractions Rotorua has to offer. Staff were very friendly. Thank you for a very enjoyable stay.

Oozing character, this lovely old building contains excellent facilities. The pool and spa area whilst small was clean and very relaxing. It was great to follow an excellent dinner with a glass beside the large gas fire.
Our room, Okareka, was generous in size, with an ensuite.
Staff are friendly and obliging.
Overall excellent value.

Absolutely loved staying here last night. We rung later than usual for a room and they were happy and able to accommodate. The two bedroom apartments are absolutely lovely, clean and spacious. The staff were very accommodating, helpful and dressed to an extremely high standard. The decor is stunning in every way possible. Now this is a hotel I plan to come back to - first one in Rotorua I can honestly say that about.
H.
Not bad for the price,
but the room could be cleaner, there was dirty and dried insects on the window shelf and some rubbish (cigarette butt) on the carpet,it was unexpected because the place looks with a big claim for a high standard and service place.
The room was changed for us,
But checking after cleaners still would be helpful I guess👌

What a neat hotel. This hotel is an experience rather than just somewhere to stay. Well beyond our expectations. We stayed in a designer room for 3 days. It was comfortable well presented in a victorian style, as is the rest of the hotel. Very friendly helpful staff. The lack of an elevator being its only drawback.
K.
Fabulous staff! Amazing decor and historical pictures. Like stepping back in time! Absolutely loved our stay!

Very fancy for my first time at a Rotorua resturant, which was very good. I ordered the salmon dish and even though i dont really eat cooked salmon, the salmon was beautifully cooked to prefection and was so delicious.

I stayed here a few months ago and I was very impressed with the food (particularly the High Tea). The character and atmosphere transports you back in time and has a wonderful British charm.

Wonderful experience on Christmas Day for lunch buffet.I felt like a V I P from the time I was greeted, til I was thanked for coming when I left .Yes I will be booking for Christmas next year and other occasions throughout the year.

I had a 3 night stay booked for work and the Prince's Gate was ideal. 5 minute walk to the events centre and a 10 minute walk into the town centre. Despite having the street outside the room I had no noise at all and the beds were very comfortable. The bar and restaurant weren't too expensive and the buffet breakfast was tasty. Very good value stay and will book again next time I am in Rotorua.
W. C.
We love this place. Stayed here 5 times this year already and these are private stays !. Relaxed, professional staff, well priced and a wonderful friendly vibe. Great resultant service and equally good pool/spa facilities. We love to sit by the fire in the comfy couch and watch the world go by with a drink or two. Don't stop what you're doing or how you are doing it. It just works !.
N.
Delicious food, great service. Booked using bookme and got 50% off our food bill which made the evening very reasonable.
F.
Didn't get to stay the night as it went into lockdown and we came home. Was very disappointed as seemed lovely. Have a voucher for another visit which they were very good about
G.
Reception could be more helpfull. Otherwise a nice place
R. M.
We've stayed here several times now, and are looking forward to more trips. The building is gorgeous, its history fascinating. The rooms are beautiful. The food is really excellent, the High Tea really worth doing, we had a lovely few hours out by the pool enjoying it. The staff are very friendly and efficient. The location is perfect, right by the beautiful Government Gardens, and close walk to the centre of town.
P.
A few things were short in our unit but staff bend over backwards to put it right greT team
J. K.
The hotel is fabulous, beautiful history but very clean and staff are wonderful. We also took advantage of the Duke bar and restaurant and the service and food was incredible. The location is perfect- can walk to most places. I would recommend this place to everyone!
김.
It was great for me. I had room by myself. It was cozy and warm. And hotel was convinient for city centre and some places for me. (Spa, Garden, restaurants). And hotel I mean house was really lovely. I’ll stay If i have a chance again. 😊
J. T.
A beautiful, conveniently located property with a warm welcoming feel. But what set's The Princes Gate apart from anywhere else I stay, is the consistently excellent service received from every member of their team every time I stay. Nothing is too much trouble for them and their professionalism is of the highest standard. Thank you all.
R. V.
Lovely place to stay. Staff make you feel special. Nice hot pool for a dip at the end of the day. Room was warm and comfortable.
Centrally located, easy walk to town/restaurants.
The restaurant at hotel actually serves great food, anything from bar snacks to restaurant meals.
Buffet breakfast was only $20 for guests and is a great selection of cereals and cooked breakfast. Great value.
Cheapest to book directly with the hotel.
B.
Aastha and Rubina were very accommodating and had very good service. Room was perfectly neat and clean also warm enough. Janice in the bar made great coffee for me. I love everything about this hotel and willing to comeback. Thank you - 👍
S.
Decor and atmosphere transported us back in time. Scrumptious breakfast and the private pool a plus
M. K.
We stayed two nights here and absolutely loved the spa. I was thinking of booking a private spa for 70 dollars at Polynesian Spa but there was no need for it! It has a private indoor pool also but not sure whether is is bookable as told nothing about it. The place is only meters away from the Rotorua government gardens and very close to the restaurants and amenities. The rooms we stayed were quite outdated though and need some refurbishment.
N. D.
Lovely old hotel. Large rooms with heat pumps. The bed and pillows were very comfortable. There are hot pools on site at the back. They are 3 different temperatures. I didn't eat here so I can't comment on the food. Breakfast was a buffet.
b.
Great food with exemplary service. Faultless. Will return. Thanks very much. Had a great night here
N. D.
Nice room and we were well looked after. Loved the Thermal Pools!
Such a beautiful old building too.
Great stay
a.
Check in was great, the staff memeber at reception was helpful and showed us to our room. The room was perfect for me and my partner, close to the pool area and cost effective the best part is it was close to all amenities, restaurants, lake attractions and museum. Nice walks and the room was easily accessible as we were in and out all day.
Only issue would be with reception staff during the day on the table it says come in and ask our staff about local attractions or ask about the hotel history. We went inside and the staff didn't know what we were talking about when we asked if the museum was open and we went in the foyer to sit and think about what we'll do next and felt uncomfortable and watched by the staff. So we ended up going to our room to find out what else we could do.
P.
An icon in Rotorua near the Gate to Govt. Garden's. Over 100 years old. Food, Coffee and accommodation. Very impressive.
C.
I had a 'snug room' it was definitely the right choice and super comfortable. Great bed, very warm, good TV, great ammenities, location is A++, restaurant is super nice (try the Duke salad!, and very the room was clean! Love the hot pool too, I will be staying here any time I am in Rotorua. Love, love, LOVE this hotel!!
K. B.
Very pleasant place to stay. Spacious room, good food, and the staff were enthusiastic and helpful. Loved the hot pools on site. Would happily stay here again
P.
Good food, nice service and for an old architecture building it looks well maintained.
k.
Lovely place to call in for a drink. Old world with character. Great service too.
S.
We stayed last week for 3 nights, the 2nd time in last 12 months, and hopefully be back in the not so distant future, the staff and accommodation are exceptional,Plus princes gate so close to the fabulous rotorua attractions.we wouldn't stay anywhere else.
S.
We had the three couesr menu. Food was excellent as was the service. Took desert home with us.
B. J.
We had a great stay at the prince gate.
Staff were very helpful, friendly and accommodating.
Barman was helpful because he got a copy of the menu so I could take it back to my room.
Rooms need some TLC
Great hotel with atmosphere and history.
Super dinner and breakfast.
J.
We booked as a group of 16 fairly senior citizens for the most part. It was a most enjoyable stay with comfortable, rooms, accommodating staff and to many people's delight, Hotpools on site.
P. D.
It is what a boutique might be. It is not luxurious as they advertise, just a regular hotel. The advertised pool is small and there not for swimming which was disappointing. It needs refurbishment. No opening window in room 27 and so no air coming into the room. Staff friendly. Centrally situated. It is more 3.5 stars
A.
We enjoyed our stay at Princes Gate. Brilliant location adjacent to the Government Gardens.Walking distance to the CPD. Staff friendly and attentive. If we were to have a criticism it would be the slow meal service. The meals themselves were as good as you get anywhere. We would be happy to stay again.
Z.
Prince's Gate is iconic hotel in Rotorua. It is located a minute walk from Visitor Information Centre and 5 minute walk from famous Eat Street. We have stayed in small room (it is small) but it was sufficient for sleeping in. And then there's the Duke's restaurant. It is fine dining at top level. The food was excellent and portions are generous. The restaurant got several awards and they are fully deserved.
N. S.
We went during my partner's birthday and we had a great experience staying there. Such a beautiful interior in and out. I took the chance to take some nice photos because every corner of the hotel is insta worth photo. I also love the idea of using a paper made toileteries instead of bottles which is eco friendly. Overall good value for money.
T.
We had an awesome stay. Service was excellent, in house hot pool was great even on a cold night, bed was very comfortable and dinner was lovely. Lan to return soon.
M. D.
the accommodation was fine very spacious. the restaurant has so much potential but fails to deliver. poorly laid out it looks like a very down market cafe. the food while promising lacked seasoning and was only warm... which is not what you want when you order soup.
J.
Had a really nice time staying here. Hotel has lots of character, good location and staff were really helpful. We found the bed comfortable and breakfast was nice (pretty standard buffet). We'd come back and stay again if a deal came up again.
H. S.
On arrival we were upgraded to a 2 bedroom from a one bedroom 🤗
When me and my family entered the room it was warm, clean and very comfortable. Customer service was brilliant pools a bonus for the kids. Overall we are loving our stay and would definitely be back and what a lovely breakfast with a welcoming smile from the young lady
N.
Warm, spacious rooms with lots of character albeit a bit tired and the bathrooms could do with a deep clean. Service was minimal... no dishes done, towels only replaced on request and surfaces not wiped. Lovely historic property in a great location.
D. S.
Good location and nice hot pool at the hotel.
We decided to spend a high price as this was a belated trip for my birthday. The staff were nice and friendly. Sadly the room was tired and we could hear the neighbours above and beside clearly. The plumbing was noisy and it sounded like someone was using your bathroom. Creaky floor boards outside our room meant that we heard every person walk past and it woke us up even though we aren't light sleepers. Very little natural light as the window opened to the hall way so you couldn't open the curtain. My wife booked it as a surprise and was very embarrassed as she thought the rooms would be a lot better for the high price. Insulation, plumbing and decoration could all do with an upgrade.
A. S.
We love staying at the Prince's Gate with all it's character and charm. Close to the city centre and perfect to see the sights from. Always a lovely welcome from staff and Lisa went out of her way to look after us with her hospitality on arrival. Can't wait to come back
J.
Stunning place to stay. One of our favourites in NZ. Feels a like being taken back in time. We had lovely and clean rooms upstairs and could sit outside on the balcony till late and just relax from all our activities. Staff was really helpful and charming. We will go back to this place for sure. Thanks
J. H.
Good friendly service and BEAUTIFUL Interior from the minute you walk in. A boutique Hotel with rich history behind it. Award wining kitchen and dishes and price is the the cheapest but there is a reason to it. No mother places are quite like it in Rotorua CBD but if you want special experiences, I certainly recommend you give it a try. In addition to the Bar it has proper restaurant inside. It is also family friendly. Walking distance from CBD and plenty free parking nearby. Check out my photos.

Really enjoyed my weekend at the princess gate
relaxed and very professional great staff approachable and friendly
The bed was great the room was clean the atmosphere was fantastic thank you from room 25 decent size and add ons
With the free pools
And add on bar! Will definitely be back !!!
K. T.
Great spot on the edge of town. Awesome selection of pools incl. the private spa (and also a sauna) 👍 Snug room is snug, as expected of course from the name 🙂
V.
We booked this hotel for the last week of school holidays and I can not stress enough how great it was, the staff were some of the nicest people we have ever met at restaurants and other services alike. The hotel room itself is very good and the roomservice is great. The hotel itself is very local which makes it a great place for doing activities and also very good for the children. They also have a hot pool (there are three of them all different temperatures) and they were very clean and perfect after a day of all sorts of fun activities. Thank you for a fabulous stay and we enjoyed every bit of it. We will definitely be coming back and would recomend it 110%

We have just enjoyed a lovely weekend at the Princes Gate. We loved the old world charm, the very comfortable beds, soft bathrobes, outdoor hot pools and sauna. The breakfast was a la carte with a good range of choices. All the staff were very friendly and accommodating. We hope to return soon :)
C. B.
Me and my wife had a great time spending the night in this hotel. Wonderful ambiance all around with an accomodating and pleasant receptionists. The only thing that disappointed our throughout experience was our high tea session the following day at about 11:00am pass. The staff lady was rude to us when asking if we can switch our tea cups into Royal Albert ones since they were displayed at their furniture and promo posters as well. The staff just looked at me and left an irritating smirked and responded "unfortunately not!". And everytime she approach us, she doesn't seem to be friendly and polite but rather feeling a bit annoyed serving us. We both love to have tea together and because of that horrible service we had, we have no intention in the future to ever come back to this place!
C. P.
The hotel is beautiful. An old wooden classic design. The rooms are dated and in need of repair. Massive construction was underway during our visit, but only to the exterior. The staff was very friendly and the hotel in excellent state of.cleanliness. it is located in a very good part of town for walking and touring. Good value for the price.
S.
Wonderful place to stay, central yet very quiet
E.
The hotel was amazing, the old charm feel of the hotel definitely makes it stand out from the rest. The lovely kiwi Indian gentleman who was at the desk was amazing, it looked like he was helping a wedding and was attending customers at the same time, top notch service, we also mentioned that it was our second honeymoon, as we were sick on our actual honeymoon, and he offered us complimentary house beverages. Will also mention the young scottish lady, amazing, and the slightly older gentleman at breakfast, also amazing. Only thing I would mention is that the carpet in our room needed an update as the top layer had worn off and the thread at the bottom was visible and that you couldn’t close the door to the toilet without lifting the toilet seat up. But honestly with everything that is happening in the world right now it’s just a minor. This place could run on service alone.
L. T.
I loved the history of this place and that the decor and furnishings are in keeping with this. The rooms have modern amenities and the bathroom was immaculate with a lovely selection of toiletries. Although they seem to have missed doing top coats on some of the wooden trim during refurbishment.
I liked the balcony entrance to the rooms and it gave a good sized space to sit outside under shelter and enjoy the view of Government Gardens.
There was a minibar hidden away in a cupboard in the bedroom which also had cutlery and crockery for coffee or tea and some glasses. Definitely had all you needed.
Staff were helpful and friendly.
Breakfast was good.
Parking was available at no cost.
Location was excellent...close to cafes shopping and restaurants and also the lake. Great for a morning or evening walk.
I would stay again.
S.
Great place, centre of town, the adjoining restaurant was awesome
K. G.
I can't fault the customer service and the location of this hotel. However, for the other aspects, I wouldn't stay here again.
This hotel needs some serious renovation. It's falling apart. The outside timber is disintegrated, the walls are thin and we could hear our neighbors to the side and above. The interior design is pretty ick, and the place is tired. Not only that but the place was not very clean - I found multiple hairs around the place, grime, and paint and other aspects of our room just flaking away.
Suffice to say, it was not the classic romantic boutique hotel I thought it would be.
This place could be really great and restored to the beauty it probably used to be, if it was completely renovated from top to bottom.
D. C.
Beautiful old building, nice rooms, unfortunately we had 'rompa stompa' in the unit above us. Otherwise the staff very friendly and helpful, food is good to very good. I'd stay again
Actually I've put it up to 5 star after another night, excellent meal last night (loved the beef cheeks) and if you can't take a bit of creaking in a 130 year old building, go stay at a soulless concrete slab chain motel. This old building is amazing.

From the moment we arrived, the service from all staff was simply fantastic. Reception staff welcoming and professional, food and beverage staff friendly and attentive and the room offered elegance, was lovely and warm on a cold day (Radiated heat from their own geothermal bore), was spotless, roomy and very well appointed! The personalised note from the GM Yuri was a lovely touch!
Relaxing in the hotel's hot pools after a busy day visiting local attractions, was blissful. 3 hot pools all with different temperatures and even a private hotpool you can book!
Loved the compendium in the room which had the history of the hotel (It was relocated and rebuilt in Rotorua around 100 years ago!). Also thought the quality bathrobes was a lovely touch!
Our dining experience in the busy hotel restaurant was simply amazing. George was our waiter for the night and gave us service second to none! He recommended wines to match our food and was spot on! Our amazing meal consisted on Rowena Potato Bread baked on site (Yummy) entree's of Smoked Venison, blue cheese, beetroot and lettuce and Trio of Salmon. Both entree's were amazing and combination of flavours unbelievable.
Our mains were Chicken Breast with an amazing corn and cranberry stuffing with roasted veges and beef cheeks, mashed potato and roast veges. Both meals cooked to perfection, full of taste and well presented. A nice touch was both chefs coming out to say hi (Tian and Head Chef DJ). Wonderful to see chefs with so much passion to provide guests with wonderful experiences.
This hotel has been renovated to an amazing standard whilst maintaining the historic nature and ambience. The quality of service from the staff are a credit to the GM and hotel!

Beautiful old hotel, very helpful and friendly staff, our only disappointment was that we were not staying in the old part of the building. The room was warm, comfortable, and clean. (Aside from ants in our kitchen and bathroom) We had a very nice breakfast and coffee in the restaurant. We would definitely stay here again
A.
Had a nice linguine and seafood platter.
The platter was meant for '2 sharing' but is actually small enough for a single hungry person.
Didn't make use of the hotel side or swimming pool area so can't speak about that
C. M.
I stayed here for 3 nights and enjoyed my stay. I liked the history of the hotel, some would say faded grandeure but its basically a 100 plus year old wooden hotel. it's not going to be like a cookie cutter modern hotel and I wouldn't want it to be.
Reading some other reviews those people should have never have booked here, there's lots of other places that would have suited them better.
I loved the history, the ambiance, the central location, friendly staff, off street parking.
Would stsy here again.
N. D.
Beautiful historic hotel, centrally located in the main town centre. Everythig was nearby. Shoutout to the Princes Gate team Gurinder , Aastha, etc. Thank you for your warm, friendly service. Aastha helped us checkin in, she was so sweet, welcoming, always smiling.
The hotel rooms are nice and well maintained.
Our room view was very nice.
I would totally recommend this place to everyone who wishes to visit Rotorua, they should stay here.
Thank you for the wonderful hospitality :)

In my 5 days trip in north island, this hotel was the best for me. Good location in Rotorua. Friendly staffs. The hotel a bit old but everything still keep very nice, like stepping back in time. The best thing is they have outdoor hot pool! After long driving trip, that make us so relax. The breakfast food and coffee was beautiful!
D.
We thought we had a room in the main building but the apartment in the annex was authentic. Loved the decor and furniture in the main building. The food was fantastic and the staff amazing. A lovely two day break in Roto Vegas!
P.
Hi, Thank you for a lovely stay. Beautiful rooms and friendly staff.
Will be back, highly recommend.
J.
Warm and comfortable room. Surprisingly quiet for an "old" style building, we were in room4. Nice breakfast, delightfully friendly staff in dining room and reception.
We are likely typical "cannt travel overseas, so will see more of NZ" tourists, will recommend you to all.

We had an amazing 2 nights stay. Absolutely lovely staff. Very close to the city center. Would definitely comeback and stay again. Thank you for having us ☺️!
B. D.
We stayed there 10 years ago, had the best room, looked out over the park on the top floor. My wife and I were just discussing out of the many places we have stayed around the world what was the most memorable.
Princes Gate was it
Second honeymoon pending !!
g.
We stayed here for several days. The ambiance of the main building, and the heated pools were the best aspects. The rooms are comfortable but dated, and the room servicing staff overlooked something almost every day. The restaurant is way overpriced for the quality of cuisine on offer. We found the food very average. So, a reasonable and central place to stay with a sense of old world grandeur, but eat somewhere else !
A.
Had a nice linguine and seafood platter.
The platter was meant for '2 sharing' but is actually small enough for a single hungry person. …
N.
Nice place to stay. Very close to Rotorua lake and CBD. The unit had ensuit kitchenette. Friendly staff and a very good restaurant.
J. M.
Had a really nice time staying here. Hotel has lots of character, good location and staff were really helpful. We found the bed comfortable and breakfast was nice (pretty standard buffet). We'd come back and stay again if a deal came up again.

Nice place. Very old worldy

Excellent stay
Colonial style furnishings , outdoor spa pools , large bedrooms with outside seating on the upper balcony.

Stunning place to stay. One of our favourites in NZ. Feels a like being taken back in time. We had lovely and clean rooms upstairs and could sit outside on the balcony till late and just relax from all our activities. Staff was really helpful and charming. Warm, spacious rooms with lots of character albeit a bit tired and the bathrooms could do with a deep clean. Service was minimal... no dishes done, towels only replaced on request and surfaces not wiped. Lovely historic property in a great location.

The friendly staff and servIce was exceptional. Studio unit was very roomy and warm. Special shout out to Vandi who was most welcoming and seemed to be everywhere
We met up with relatives from Auckland and stayed 3 nights

Fantastic place to stay. We chose to have a "staycation" in Rotorua where we live. And would highly recommend to everyone.
Beautiful old building, a step into the past! Great meals and very friendly and welcoming staff.
Only a short walk to the CBD, Government Gardens (across the road) and a short walk to Lake Rotorua.
P.
Nice boutique hotel. We had a suite with 2 rooms. Great for a family. We enjoyed the warm pools. We will be back!

A beautiful old hotel, lovingly restored and maintained, without losing its original character. Stayed just one night, but ate there for both dinner and breakfast.
My room was quite large, as was the bathroom. Wifi was fast and reliable. The tea service iin the room included real China cups! Along with a nice selection of teas.
My one complaint about the room was the shower! It is in a lovely old style bath, but rather than a typical curtain, it had a tiny glass panel. This provided no protection and allowed water to splash all over the floor.
Both breakfast and dinner were excellent with great service and a very interesting menu.
Recommended, other than the shower.
E. W.
Like stepping back in time. So cosy and close to town. Would definitely stay again. Only niggle is the noisy floorboards but I guess it's part n parcel with the style not sure if those below us could hear these when walking to the bathroom. The staff are lovely and helpful. And the shower hot and welcoming.
A. S.
This is an absolutely beautiful hotel with great historic rooms. The restaurant is also top knotch. The only issue we had is that the old walls are not very well sound proofed so maybe not ideal if your a light sleeper.
R.
Stayed 1 night in a "snug" room which is code for having no windows! That said this hotel is a delightful old building a a pleasure to visit.
M. M.
Loved it!! The history, the old grandeur, furniture, their hot pools, the position and the smiling staff all made it a great experience. How many people realise that the hotel used to be in Waihi and was moved to Rotorua in 1917? Amazing
P. Y.
The Towels were awful hard and small no luxury about them, bathrobes one soft and fluffy the other like wearing sandpaper wrapped around you, the staff were really great, attentive and very pleasant, but the hotel let them down. By lack of polish and detail in rooms. And yes there were renovations being done we could see and understand that.
M. O.
The Prince's Gate is one of the most interesting places I've ever stayed. The building itself has a rich history, and the restaurant has some fascinating menu options. The building itself is beautiful, our room was very comfortable, and the staff were courteous and helpful. The only thing I regret about my stay is that it wasn't longer.
L. F.
This gracious old building exudes opulence and old school charm at every turn. It's all Axminster carpet, chandeliers and deep comfy sofas in front of the fireplaces. Happy hour is 2.5 hours long and the house wines are good. After a soak in one of the 3 hot pools, enjoy a couple of vinos with one of their warm home made bread and pesto boards by the fire. A short stroll to Eat Streat for dinner but why even bother to leave the hotel when Duke's Restaurant on site is so good. This is absolutely my favourite place to stay in Rotorua and one of my all time favourite hotels. I expect to see Hercule Poirot relaxing at the bar whenever I stay!
K.
Lovely hotel, close enough, but far enough away from the noise of central Rotorua.
Lovely older class feel and very large rooms
M. P.
We stayed at the hotel as also had the 7 Course Taste of New Zealand menu for dinner. The hotel had everything we needed and is a beautiful historic feel, but may be starting to get a touch dated.
The 7 Course Taste of New Zealand menu was the best meal we had during our honeymoon. It is truly a dining experience. The chef came to greet us after our meal to discuss highlights and ask questions. It was a special meal for sure.
J. E.
Was so pleased and had such a lovely time at High Tea today. The staff was so friendly and very accommodating with my allergy to dairy. The food and tea were so delicious and the decor was beautiful. Thank you so much for your lovely hospitality.
A.
Relaxing, enjoyable, great food, enjoyable hot springs

We ended up staying the night in Rotorua and was so lucky to come upon this hotel. It's old world charm, beautiful interiors and exemplary staff service is what hotel accommodation 'used' to be, plus the location is excellent! We loved it so much so we came back for two more nights on our return trip! Highly recommend. Thank you all so much!

Rooms are in need of refurbishment. For example, the woodwork on the bathroom vanity was rotted and worn out. The room was also quite stuffy - the A/C unit wasn't sufficient to cool the room on a warm summer evening. Overall, not a bad hotel for the price, but I would likely try a different place on my next visit to Rotorua.
J.
I quite enjoyed it, the rooms were amazing. It reminded me of how people lived back in the old days. Was impossible to get to sleep due to it being absolutely dead quite... Thankfully i downloaded an app on the phone that'll play fan noises for hours to help get us to sleep.

I agree with A G’s review from about a month ago. I sit here waiting for breakfast; we sat down over 45 minutes ago. We were told that they are “plating” the food 10 minutes ago, and it’s still not here.
The food itself was great: I had the salmon eggs Benedict the first morning and the salmon hash stack the second morning. It’s great if you’re willing to have to wait for a while.
The rest of the amenities are great and it’s a beautiful hotel, apart from the door knob that came off of one of the bedroom doors. Great location right by Government Gardens and the town centre.
R.
Excellent stay
Colonial style furnishings , outdoor spa pools , large bedrooms with outside seating on the upper balcony.
K. W.
We stayed here for our mini moon. We stayed one night in the duchess suite which was a dream come true. Beautiful, quiet, fancy, cozy, warm. Then the next night we stayed in the designer room. Also Lovely, cozy, a little bit loud with the road, and could really have a sleep in like the other room with the other guests and hotel staff walking out side our door on the squeaky floor. But lovely baths in both rooms. Made for a very romantic get away.

I planned a special birthday treat for my husband and brought a "staycation" package plus dinner for two.
I also arranged a bottle of wine to surprise the birthday boy and this was kindly upgraded by management plus a couple of extra surprises too.
Totally recommend Prince's Gate to all.
C. T.
This is the most unique hotel in Rotorua! The history and architecture of the building is fascinating. We had a beautiful meal at Dukes Restaurant, I loved all of it! You have got to stay here next time you're in Rotorua.
R.
Had lunch in princess gate today. Food was beautiful...great price and really filling. Staff are happy, welcoming, friendly and accommodating. Look forward to going again. Thank you princess gate for a lovely experience.
N.
Nice place to stay. Very close to Rotorua lake and CBD. The unit had ensuit kitchenette. Friendly staff and a very good restaurant.
A.
We had a fantastic stay; all the staff were so friendly & welcoming. The food was beautiful - highly recommend the Indigenous degustation menu :) the bed was very comfortable, extremely clean room & great location!
W.
Love the restaurant and we had a high tea which was traditionally delicious and delightful we had great service from the staff will go there again fantastic experience
K. M.
My wife and I booked the winter getaway deal which was around $380 for two nights. This included full breakfast on both mornings and a three-course meal on one of the nights.
The room was nice and clean. Nothing too flash, but wasn't expecting anything modern from an old periodic building.
The spa pools were lovely with the private sauna too. The towels by the pool were a nice touch. Being outdoors, the pools were perfect on what was a cold rainy weekend.
The service from the reception/concierge staff was incredible. We were shown to our room on check-in by the manager and he even offered to get our bags from the car (when it was pouring down outside).
On our first night we went into the restaurant for the included meal. WOW! It's rare for us to have a full three courses but we had to here! The food was amazing. We had the Camembert wedges and Smoked Venison as starters. The blue cheese and venison go together perfectly. For mains, we had the lamb and the ribeye...both of which were cooked exactly how ordered. For desert we went with the Vanilla Custard (creme brûlée) and the rice pudding..which again were phenomenal. The wines we had with the meal were a perfect match too. Again, fantastic service from start to finish. Compliments to the wait staff and the new chef!
Great breakfasts and coffees too!
All in all, a phenomenal service and value for money from start to finish. We will definitely be back on our next trip to Rotorua!

We enjoyed our suite, loved the heated pools. The only thing that was disappointing was our first night at the restaurant we waited an hour and a half for our meal, service looked good for everyone else except us. They did apologize right at the end, and gave us some compensation.
J. T.
I have not stayed there YET. Unfortunately we booked in at another place, discovered this little gem by chance because of Duke's restaurant downstairs which is amazing. We inspected the rooms and we WILL stay at Prince's Gate next time we are in Rotorua. Smallish but beautiful rooms with the best restaurant right downstairs. We are sold.
K. F.
We stayed for two days. The room was lovely, we ate at the restaurant which had wonderful and well cooked food for reasonable prices but the best thing was the customer service. Myself and my daughter we treated with respect and made to feel we were important and wanted.
I would recommend this hotel to friends and family and would stay here again.
J.
Wonderful atmosphere and right in the centre of town, this hotel is a very affordable option for a pleasant stay in this amazing place.
K. T.
Just read previous review Li was it? My experience could not be more different. My friend and I were in the apartments as well just last weekend and the apartment was very clean. Spotless. It was spacious, well kept and even had a stocked mini bar fridge. We ate dinner in the dinning room with a show, my meal salmon was extremely well presented and a generous serving with my friend ordering duck which she said was exquisite. Did we stay in the same hotel? ....as our experience at Princes Gate was excellent value for money, professional staff and an all round excellent experience.
B.
It was a great location to walk to the Government Gardens and local restaurants. It is a old hotel but the bed was comfortable and room clean. We enjoyed soaking in the heated pools.
C. S.
Good location but a couple of issues. Rooms whilst spacious have pretty thin walls - next door's snoring kept me awake! TV a bit dodgy and breakfast a bit of a rip off, e.g. coffee costs extra.
J. M.
This little place is a gem. All the amenities a discerning traveler could want - and the manager Phil is always available to do whatever he can to make your stay perfect. The location is ideal for walking to many tourist attractions, shopping, and restaurants. It’s a nice change from the same old chain hotels. Thanks to Phil and your wonderful staff for making our stay so enjoyable.
M.
We enjoyed a high tea- it was very abundant & presentation was excellent. Fresh, lots of variety & tasty
M.
Great location, beautiful historical building, friendly staff.
Our room was very small, dark and we heard every noise especially at night (people walking past our room as well as showering and flushing).
H. B.
We usually stay in Motels when on holiday but decided to try a hotel stay for a change. Absolutely a great decision! Princes Gate is a delightfully historic building with everything you could want for a cosy winter stay. Centrally situated with fantastic service abs luxurious decor. Our room was large with very comfortable bed and thermal heating and a heat pump if preferred. We sat in the lounge for happy hour drink before going in to dine. Dinner was great with very attentive waiter. The hotel is currently renovating some of their upstairs rooms so can't wait to return and check them out!
R.
This is a charming old world establishment, with lovely high ceilings, lots of polished wood a great breakfast and good service. Located in the heart of the city, in walking distance to shops and local attractions.
H. K.
Vintage building, so obviously has its shortcomings, wooden building so you can easily hear your neighbors or downstairs, but the guests here are all desent people and staff are helpful, better the house keeping won't clean the rooms so early then I could sleep more. The bed and pillows are very comfortable. even has hot pools
K.
Lovely old boutique hotel, room is great, bed comfortable, meals very nice, especially the seafood platter snack and the cheese board. Staff very friendly and helpful.
F.
Fabulous experience. Delish lunch. Staff very attentive ready to assist immediately. Beautiful hotel with gorgeous mirrors and decor.
T.
Step back in time , have an ale in the lobby and chat to some locals , happy hour 🙄 not really but the place is beautiful. Loved it.
S.
Location of the hotel is good. Free parking offered in front of the hotel. Wifi can be slow and spotty. Bed is small for a couple. Due to the proximity of thermal pool by the lake, we could catch whiffs of sulphur (rotten eggs) in the room. There is no elevator and if you have heavy luggage, you might have to lug it up and down the stairs.
M. H.
We stayed here last year June 2013 for a joint Birthday Celebration and we were not disappointed.
We stayed in the actual Hotel and would recommend this if you are looking for the olde world charm and ambience.
We had early pre-dinner drinks in the late afternoon in the bar and before dinner had an amazing performance of Phantom of the Opera which would have bested anything you paid to go see in Australia.
The food was fantastic interspersed with a really good cabaret so the time between meals was not an issue if you relaxed and enjoyed what was happening.
The private spa pools offer differing temps which were great for relaxing in even if it rained and all part of the room rate with towels provided - no need to go out!
We couldn't fault the friendly staff and we enjoyed it so much that we have booked Princes Gate as a regular twin Birthday treat. We have booked again for this Queens Birthday long weekend - winter is a great time to visit with hot pools and not so crowded.
I would recommend this Hotel to anyone who is wanting to relax, enjoy every moment of the experience and splurge a little on themselves for the 5 star experience that only a classic historical building can provide with caring staff.
Don't be put off by just reading the negative reviews - I have stayed at some lovely places all over NZ by balancing reviews and I have been pleasantly surprised by several locations that sounded not so good but decided to give a go anyway.

The BEATIFIFUL room thermal pools and spa friendly staff outstanding restaurant and TOP service
E. G.
We were delighted with our stay at Princes Gate. The wonderful old building is a treasure. We stayed in both the old and the new parts.
The old building had wonderful character and to sit on the second floor balcony and watch the world go by with a sundowner was fabulous.
On our return journey we stayed in the newer part. It was spacious and comfortable.
The staff were friendly and helpful.
Not just another tower block same same hotel.
C.
Beautiful historic hotel. It's right next to the government gardens and a short walk to the lake. The room was nice and bright with some vintage flair. Our room had an old brick fireplace in it which was a fun detail.
T.
This hotel is very fancy and is right next to the Rotorua I-site and tourism center. Is very close to the Maori Tour Center and ***y stores and restaurants. The staff helped me with my laundry and the food is delicious (see the pancake …
D.
It's a historical place, meaning historical is the opposite of modern. Our room was small and the hot pools were too hot, but those were the only inconveniences. Breakfast at the restaurant was a pleasing experience.
S. G.
Very nice character rooms and furniture with great facilities and amenities. Fantastic location. Would have booked elsewhere if we knew there was going to be live music played from the bar Saturday night.
J.
Lively food helpful staff great experience
J.
Heat pumps in every room and hot pools are nice. Building is over 100 years old and the decor and room fixtures look like they are too. Friendly staff and central location are both a plus
B. K.
Charming 19th century building with great staff ready to accommodate your needs at any time. Rooms were very clean and warm. We loved our stay
K.
Went to check it out for our group and they have an excellent menu which l am looking forward to sampling in the near future.
Y. R.
My family had the most perfect stay while travelling in Rotorua! I know it was built for the British Royal familly, everything looks historical and they are all maintained very well. Location is central, service is professional. The most importantly, the price is absolutely good compare to most of the motels in the city!
Will definately come back next time here!
S.
Excellent service. The restaurant manager Pandi was a gracious host. Food and beverage were absolutely tasty. Must try. Highly recommended.
F.
Amazingly historical and clean hotel. You can see historical things
M.
First room had issues which caused us to move. Second room was noisy and slightly dated. Staff were very helpful though and the happy hour each night was good. A mixed bag.
A.
Charming boutique hotel, even the small rooms were cosy. Friendly staff, beautiful common area and delicious, creatively presented meals in the restaurant. The Korean Chinese banquet was great value.
I. W.
It appeared a little dated but we were pleasantly surprised by this hotel. Separate lounge, bedroom and bathroom. Two comfortable couches in the lounge. decent wifi in the room and reasonably priced. Close to cafés and restaurants. Would happily stay there again.
j.

Lovely place. Friendly and helpful staff. Really nice pools. We also had a very yummy meal at the restaurant. Great place to stay👍
S.
A luxury hotel in the City, close by to local stores, restaurants and attractions, staff are friendly, helpful and knowledgeable about the local area. Parking is available but is extremely limited on site, on street parking is likely to be used. Rooms are nice to stay in and are clean and safe.
G. B.
I eat here every week or 2. They have an excellent early bird special, 2 courses for $30 and 3 courses for $40. The bar menu is also good. Try the 'from the sea platter' at the bar, yummy!
S.
Simply the best, conferrable, cost, old style room with modern facilities,
Okay baar
Okay meal
Breakfast is good with basic selections.
N. A.
Grinder was great to deal with. Friendly and upgraded our room! Our room was absolutely spacious and enjoyed our stay very much.

Very good location; walking distance from the Polynesian Spa and Blue Baths. Good central location to base yourself to visit the tourist sites, in and around Rotorua. An historic building and overall value for money. Good cafes and eateries within a 5 minute walk.
J.

Had an entertaining evening here. Mack the barman did a wonderful job with his story telling. The bar area was cosy and it was a plus to be able to watch the rugby in comfy lounge area. The pork belly was nice but no crackling let it down I thought.
D.

Amazing hotel. Built in 1897 and moved from Waihi to Rotorua. We were in the Marvelly Suite. Amazing room with fantastic service. Couldn't ask for more. The food was good and the room was comfortable. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay!
S.
I honestly couldn’t speak more highly of this hotel. Lovely staff, great food and beautiful setting. I got married in the hotel and they reserved an area for us at no cost and made our room gorgeous. I would not stay anywhere else in Rotorua.
s.
The hotel is nice and the rooms are decent. The food is nice. The room service is very expensive and there is some peculiar smell that pertains in the room always, maybe because of the hot springs.
J.
Fantastic heritage building. Expect and appreciate the age. Nice bar with Happy Hour. Great restaurant for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Free use of their hot pools.
C.
