Beyond 5 stars!!
I came to the Solitaire Lodge restaurant for a family dinner when I was 7 months pregnant. The booking had been made by my father in law, who let the team know I was pregnant. I wasn't expecting any special treatment, but the service was exceptional - every dish that I was served was meticulously checked to ensure it was completely safe for me to eat, and any potentially unsafe ingredients were removed or replaced - I didn't even have to ask.
On top of that, the lounge where you are served pre-dinner cocktails & canapés ritual before being lead into the main dining room has a luxe, James Bond vibe - it turns a dinner reservation into a proper night out.
If you're hoping to dine here, but aren't staying at the lodge, make sure to phone ahead - part of the appeal is the exclusivity of this gorgeous venue!

Superb hosts, food, food and wine matches. Those attributes are maximised with attentive, professional and caring service. A must try experience. Unique lake and mountain scape.

Solitaire Lodge is simply amazing! The food, service, views and relaxation were top notch. We even stayed at Cape Kidnappers which was indeed lovely, but Solitaire with its warm staff, attention to detail, and 5 star food really took our breath away. Definitely will plan a return trip sometime!

We stayed 4 nights in December. Remote location with outstanding views. Very good if looking for a secluded break. The lake setting is amazing and the staff wonderfully attentive. The chefs and dinners were very well presented with good ingredients. Although dinners are at a set time, the staff are flexible to accommodate individual requirements. Rooms are comfortable but nothing special. This is a relaxing getaway lodge so don’t expect fast Wifi. The managers are super attentive and make every effort to make your stay special. We enjoyed our stay very much.

Second time here! This place is wonderful to relax. Thanks to the owner, Wayne! Pip & Nick and the team are welcoming. Thank you all! The food is delicious!!! (Thank you Dan and Monica!!! :) 10/10 for cleaning! All the rooms have amazing views heading the lake ✨! The Lodge is situated in a little Paradise!
You can go kayaking on the lake, go fishing on the lake (thank you John :), go visiting RedWood & nearby (beautiful places to spend days and days in the nature ..., or ... you can try the Polynesian Spa & Thermal Sources ...
After a w-end here ... you are like “new” ... (21/09/2018)
ps: be aware! “ cheap and good quality” doesn’t exist!!! ...
But, if you are looking for quality, tasty food, impeccable cleaning rooms, nice people and possibility to do a lot of activities and being in the middle of the nature, bref, a little Paradise for a few days, definitely you are in the right place :)

We were in Solitaire lodge during Christmas time, and had an amazing time with great quality service from the owners and hosts Wayne and Ingrid. The staff was discreet but very attentive, quickly taking note of our preferences. Our room was well appointed with a lovely outlook. We would go back in a heartbeat.

Amazing place. Beautifully run, lovely staff, delicious food at breakfast and dinner. All home made. Some great outings on offer nearby...recommend the walk to the waterfall, comes with a boat trip across the lake too

My husband and I shared a wonderful, relaxing weekend at Solitaire Lodge. The hotel sits up high above the lake and is close enough to all the attractions of the area of Rotorua without any of the smells. Graham gave us helpful information and all of the staff seemed happy to be there.

Beautiful setting, perched on a hill overlooking Lake Tarawera. Our room, number 5, was large and well furnished. There was a mostly private balcony which also looked out over the water. The staff was terrific and the food beyond fantastic. The only issue I might have with Solitaire is its isolation. The road, though paved, is very twisty turny. I would not let that dissuade you, however. It's an excellent two or three night stop, though a bit on the expensive side.Take advantage of the hot pool trip by boat and the hike to the falls.

Gorgeous location at the end of a peninsula surrounded by beautiful Lake Tarawera. The Lodge is relaxed luxury. The hosts Wayne & Ingrid do a wonderful job and will make you feel so special. Ask for the room which has the outdoor bath on the balcony drenched in sunshine which is pure indulgence. The food is outstanding. You won't go hungry. There is lots to do in the area too, lake fishing with John Hamill, a scenic heli flight with Volcanic Air or a luxury Sailing Charter with Matt from Pure Cruises. You can be as busy as you want to be. Highly recommended!

Drive through the gates and you have access to ***y wonderful premium experiences which I found is the key to this lodge. The walk to the Tarawara Falls was a great way to walk off a lovely breakfast. Their genuine interest and care of us and our experience ensured that we well looked after.

The place was pretty stunning, but from the start
we got a bit tricked into a much bigger booking without or very poor information on it. Plus we thought the bicycles we took out, were a complimentary option, when we actually got fully charged for them. The food was pretty good and service in the dining room good as well.
To be totally honest I don’t think I would recommend to anyone to stay at Solitaire, but if you really decided to opt for it make sure you ask for a detailed price list of everything if you don’t want to have unpleasant surprises with your bill like we did.

What a fabulous place to stay. The entire hotel was very clean. The people at the front desk were very helpful and friendly. All the main sites are a short walk away. The pristine lake is a very special natural resource to which the lodge provides access and guests enjoy.

It’s a spectacular setting on a narrow spit of land jutting into Lake Tarawera, just outside of Rotorua. From the beautiful copper swans on the electric gates to the personal meet and greet by our host, Wayne we immediately felt reassured of our decision. Wowed by the lake view from our villa.

I've been here on my honeymoon on November 2016, memorable experience, thanks to the owner Wayne and his wife. Best upscale food, calmness and serenity, paradise views. Good memories.

In 1988 (or so) my husband and I had saved our money so we could take a vacation to New Zealand. It was the only place on Earth we wanted to visit! A dream vacation for sure! After making reservations for two nights, we found ourselves driving to Rotorua with no reservations. We passed the entry to Solitaire and picked up a brochure. Well, we thought, let's count our remaining vacation money, hoping we could afford to stay there the remaining days of our time in NZ, we COULD!!!! Words can never express our delight in the welcome we received from the owners. I'm sorry I don't remember any of the names of these gracious people. Our accommodations were unbelievable.
Over these many years, (we've been retired to Oregon since 2005) we have remembered our time spent at Solitaire. We fished with a great guide, and I caught a huge fish that the chef prepared for our dinner that evening. The meal was shared with other guests and their family. I seem to remember one of the guests was a Bank President from another country and his family. Another couple was from America and had a large ranch.
We went to bed that night giggling how we were among such wealthy, prestigious people and we had about $200.00 left of our vacation money.
The end result of this once in a lifetime travel experience, is that we have have re-lived those days and shared them with many friends and family.
I would have written a review of Solitaire but we didn't have internet those many years ago!!
My belated thanks to the folks that helped to make this time in my life one that has NEVER been duplicated.
If you are reading this review, start right this minute to save your money and get to NZ and Solitaire! You will thank me!

(Translated) With a great location by the lake, I felt comfortable and comfortable. Both the room and the food were excellent. Thank you to Ingrid, Weign, Guide Paul, Chef David, Dan, Monica, Sommelier Michael, and the hospitality of all of you. Although there were days when the weather was not blessed in the off season, I was able to challenge various activities, and it was a very fulfilling holiday.
