Reviews of James Cook Hotel Grand Chancellor
Our first stay was amazing. New renovated rooms, big shower, and close to everything. The pillow service was a nice surprise and was a good added touch free of charge. Breakfast was included with our stay and was great but would be a little expensive if not included. Being in the middle of the city, everything was an easy walk and was very convenient. There was even a Woolworth a couple doors down. The second stay we were in an un renovated room but was still decent with the same comfortable beds and pillows even though it felt dated.
Stayed last week with two rooms booked for family for two nights. Staff are excellent, location great, restaurant is superb (the buffet is great value and quality). The major downside were our rooms - threadbare carpet, dated and smelled 'old'. View of carpark and likewise straight into our room. Probably wouldn't go back if other choices available, except to the restaurant. PS - rooms were very quiet.
Booked the newly refurbished executive king suite and was slightly disappointed when getting into the room. The photos online are very deceiving and make the room look a lot bigger than what it actually is. The rooms are just what you would expect at a standard hotel. However, the king size bed was very comfortable along with the pillows. The reception staff were very friendly, helpful and professional. A pleasure to deal with.
👍 Like my review! We had a great 3 night stay at James Cook Hotel Grand Chancellor in Wellington, New Zealand as part of our road trip across the country. We would highly recommend having parking included in your booking since it was not only convenient but the parking around the area can be difficult and expensive. Although the hotel is on a hill, we had easy access to the main street of The Terrace along with an elevator access down to Lambton Quay giving access to the waterfront and several attractions to dine, drink, exercise, or sightsee. The room was very clean; check in staff was friendly and smooth; bed and pillows were comfortable; bathroom was refreshing with toiletries (e.g. shampoo, conditioner, soap, shower cap, vanity kit); fridge was convenient; iron and ironing board; internet was fast; and offerings for use with a provided kettle (e.g. instant coffee, tea, hot chocolate, spoon, cups, glasses). There is also an expensive laundry service that you can send away if necessary. Do note that your windows may be viewable by another person with ease. One issue we found is that there's no nearby outlets towards the head of the bed requiring an extension cord and adapter if you have a medical device. There was also a cozy gym, a renovated coffee shop (wasn't open while we were there), and a restaurant on the top floor. Overall, we would definitely want to stay here again and would recommend it to our friends and family.
The hotel is on top of the hill about ten minutes walk to all the shops and restaurants on the wharf. It’s a fine hotel. The rooms seem dated, the room itself was very noisy. Just lots of creaks and cracks and house settling sounds. The shower is one of the awkward ones that don’t have a door so you get water all over the floor. The buffet breakfast is large with plenty of options and there’s a coffee shop in the lobby.
Hotel lift opens out to Lambton Quay, so is very central, handy location. Staff were friendly and allowed us to check in at 11.30am on our day of arrival. Our room was satisfactory, clean but dated. The carpet is in desperate need of replacement, and rooms can be a bit noisy with traffic and other guests entering their rooms. Overall, does the job and can't complain for < $200 per night
We reserved a family room for our stay. The refurbished room was quite pleasant, though we found the double beds to be somewhat smaller than expected. The soundproofing could use some improvement as well. The car park, conveniently located within the same building, had a charge of $30 per night. The location was ideal, surrounded by numerous restaurants and shopping options. However, the absence of concierge service was a bit disappointing.
We had an Executive Twin Room in the 26th floor. The room was big and the beds very comfortable. You can even choose which kind of pillow you want for the night. We had a really good nights sleep.
The only negative point to mention is, that the walls are rather thin so you can hear the neighbors and everyone on the floor. Also the wind howls very strong in the upper floors, so better bring earplugs if you are a light sleeper.
Reception is very helpful. The service is excellent. Buffet restaurant food is excellent great service and value.
We travel through Wellington last few years by far this time staying in James Cook hotel is the best one.
We had a family gathering for breakfast. Enjoyed the mushrooms and grilled tomatoes, I'm a big fan of salmon but found it too salty. The staff who looked after our table, a young man was very courteous and with a smile cleared away empty plates and glasses promptly. Experience was below average, decor felt outdated. Windows were dirty. Been in NZ for decades and first time visit here. The reception staff were friendly.
I booked in today for a 4 night stay. Check-in was seamless, with great customer service.
My room is a spacious king-size room with a nice seating area and desk, which is great for work.
Very clean. Lovely decor. There are lots of power and USB outlets, which was impressive, so much easier to charge up devices.
Nice sized shower and ensuite. I'm looking forward to my stay.
Very central location at a great price.
Edit ...
My entire stay was fabulous. I want to shout out to Rosa who looks after reception in the Whitby's restaurant. She is the highlight of my stay at James Cook. Always so friendly and professional. Wonderful customer service.
Overall a great experience at the GC.
Service at front desk was okay, but not good nor great. Did their job, but didn't go above and beyond, probably not paid enough to go above and beyond to be fair.
Room was great, not modern but very clean. No cutlery or plates so takeaways not really an option. Obviously they are trying to make you get the expensive room service.
Buffet breakfast absolutely worth it, but only if it's in the deal/package with your room.
Not worth the asking price of $38 but wow, great food and the live cooking station is awesome... poached eggs, pancakes, omelettes all at your request from the chef.
The chefs on both days were great. Big ups to them having to keep a lot of hangry people happy, especially hard doing in the morning!
Location is great, catch the lift down to Lambton Quay. with ease.
Of coarse parking is expensive, but it is everywhere in Wellington. Would be awesome if they could get the cost per night for it but can't see it happening in the near future.
I will be back.
Stayed at the James Cook over the weekend as part of a big group for a wedding. The hotel location is very central and easy access from the motorway. Great to have all the family wedding party allocated rooms on the same floor. Room service was very helpful and friendly when we requested champagne glasses and an ice bucket.
The room appeared to have been recently renovated with a lick of paint and upgraded modern bathrooms. The only bummer was that the water pressure was very weak for such a big open shower. It also would've been nice to have a monsoon shower head available. Also, there was no toilet brush provided, which can come in handy. Otherwise, the bathroom was spacious with plenty of bench space on the vanity and great to have a shelf available in the shower for my stuff.
The room only came with one bathrobe, which was odd, but room service brought us another one. Great to have a smart TV in the room with good Sky channels as well as other options for apps like Netflix and Spotify.
The bed was very comfortable with lovely soft sheets and pillowcases. Room location seemed nice and quiet which was good.
The hot/buffet breakfast options in the Whitby restaurant was very good with plenty of selection to choose from. The price was definitely up there though being $33 for hot/continental breakfast and $38 for buffet breakfast (prices for everything have gone up). The actual restaurant area is looking a bit tired and could do with an upgrade.
Staff were friendly and very accommodating when leaving a room card at the front desk for guests arriving late.
Hotel parking is $30 (per night I think?) and in the same building as the hotel, which is very convenient.
Rooms were nice and spacious, more importantly cleaner than most I have seen in Wellington. Great location and easy walk to shop around in the city.
Good food options and drinks at the hotel. Friendly service.
Rooms are very basic and lacking amenities and info like places to go for dinner, activities, etc. Walls are extremely thin, no sound proofing what so ever, could hear everyone in the other rooms around us.
Front desk staff had our room ready early for us and gave us a room with a lovely view on the high floor. They were very prompt with requests and extra tea bags, which is why I gave 4 star.
I really enjoyed my stay here at the James Cook Hotel. The views are beautiful, the rooms are spacious, clean, and modern.
The hotel resturant on level 17 provides a wide range of quality buffet breakfast selections. The herbed tomatoes were delicious. Thank you to Elaine) the manager for the great chat and coffee!.
The hotel also offers a buffet dinner with a wide selection of glorious dishes.
Overall, this is one of the best hotels I have stayed in. The service I recieved by the attentive and friendly staff here is exceptional. The two men at the reception who attended me were fabulous and genuine!. Five stars!.
Awesome experience . We didn’t want to leave the hotel till last moment. I left message that my little one is turning 6 and they treat us with macaroons with happy birthday note . That gesture was so sweet. View from our room was memorable.
Room was ok but the shower head leaked badly and it was difficult to get a shower. Was disappointed no valet parking and you had to get a ticket each day and the parks wete so narrow, I was in a suzuki so wouldn’t stay here again
Good location and rooms.
I talked with reception about our van and there parking. I have stayed with james cook ,wellington in the past with free parking however not any more. We had a 5min walk and $30 charge for recommended parking and the reception didn't let us no of the costs
You guys need to be telling your awsome guests of these costs when booking .not ok.
Great location and easy access to Lampton Quay through the elevators.
Very basic rooms but we were just needing some where to lay our heads for the night.
Clean & tidy rooms, comfy beds, and great front of desk welcome
Very local so you can walk to most things, check in and check out was very easy and on check in all your information is provided, there is no more valet parking you park yourself within the hotel vercinity, any questions I had was answered with the most detailed answered anyone could give and the bed was so comfy! Shower pressure could be a little better but still good, the care the workers put into their customers is what will have people coming back
Easy and quick check-in and check-out. Stayed 2 nights in one of the refurbished rooms, at a reasonable rate - winter special. Quality curtains blocked out all light, A+ shower and bed. Noticed that carpet had started to fray at some edges. Great location, lift goes down to main shopping area and bus stops. Taxis often available, waiting immediately outside hotel reception. At peak times, commuters/students also use hotel lifts so can be crowded. As I've stayed at this hotel before, use to the 'commuter rush' through the bar and reception area. At least they've stopped the bikes riding through.
Very nice hotel, parking nice and easy, rooms good. Reception staff very helpful. Useful luggage drop off spot before entering car park.
Dated rooms with worn carpet and furniture. Nice staff. Great location.
Really good staf. Friendly staff. Value for money. Great location. Would recommend
Great breakfast clean room comfortable bed fabulous position for the city and getting in and out on the motorway 🛣️
Would definitely recommend
Newly renovated rooms very lovely to stay in.
Great two restaurants reasonable price lovely food.Handy Wilsons parking just put $30 a night.
In the heart of Wellington CBD ☺️
Easy reach to attractions like the Cable Car, Parliament, TSB Arena, Te Papa, Tākina and Sky Stadium. Can easily stroll down to Lambton Quay through its pedestrian access!!
Very odd layout with multiple elevator levels situated a short distance apart, but it feels like someone turned a small mall area I to a hotel. Service was great, rooms are fine if a little dark and dated looking. Comfortable bed, clean area but no bath, just a shower area that doesn't close (open entrance). All in all, it's not bad, but it's not a standout for me.
Stayed here for 3nights for a convention at TSB arena. Strategically located to anywhere, shops; takeaways; restaurants, public transport -:) spacious rooms, clean and courteous staff. Just need an upgrade on soundproofing as u can hear the kettle from adjacent room, otherwise was a pleasant stay
Had the most wonderful time in James Cook Hotel with 2 old gym friends
So central to town, Upper Hutt and Lower Hutt either by car or buses
Just need to ask for a day pass on the buses
Parking great for us and for our visitors
We were treated with courtesy and respect at all times
Sorry to leave but looking forward to our next time here together
Yours sincerely

O M G. The staff are so lovely, the room was perfect for our overnight stay. The ladies at the front desk were super busy when we checked in but still managed a smile for everyone. The bussiness however meant that we weren't told about the charge for parking. We were happy to pay because secure overnight parking is hard to come by, but it was a surprise when the gentleman checking us out advised of it. (It does say about the charge on the back of the paper that goes in your car windscreen, however after being mucked around by our initial hotel, we were in too much of a rush to get sorted for the concert we were attending that we didn't even think to read it)
We had room service and ate the full breakfast in the morning. The rooms were very clean and organized. It was a wonderful experience. We will be visiting again the next time we pass through Wellington.
This hotel is wonderfully located, so close to the CBD of Wellington & therefore walkable to all close attractions such as Cuba st & Te Papa, the view from our room was lovely. We did have an additional person (our child) however it was forgotten to offer us an additional towel for them, apart from that we as a family had a great time
We were told about this hotel by several friends who had stayed there previously and we found it did meet our expectations.
The room was well appointed, but the cleaning staff needed to be reminded 3 times about the marks on the bathroom door.
Car parking for guests was okay, but a lift would have made it better, especially with suitcases.
Loved the “Happy Hour” at the bar, and the hotel is ideally situated to most of the local shops, restaurants and tourist attractions.
Motorway access was just around the corner and the exit from the Motorway was right across the street.
We had a great time there and we will definitely be staying there again.
Stayed here a couple of night for a work trip in a twin room on the terrace side.
Room is a little worn but I know there are refurbished rooms for an increased price.
Too many pillows on the bed which puzzled me (4 pillows and 2 cushions). Beds were too soft for my liking and easily moved when getting in and out of bed.
No power outlets near the bed which was annoying, would of loved to have my phone charging on the bed side table.
Overall room was pretty standard and comfortable enough for my stay. I would stay again but maybe in a refurbished room instead for the extra price.
I remember this being 'grander'. The rooms were okay but, although it appears that rooms have been updated recently, it still felt a bit 'old' with few furnishings and decor and marking already on the walls. The beds were comfy and there was a nice pillow selection,, the room was generally clean and tidy, bathroom facilities were adequate with a big shower. A stand out was the great front desk service.
My biggest issue this stay was not the hotel, but some inconsiderate guests with noisy children running up and down the hall and making a noise at unreasonable hours (perhaps visiting from another time zone?)
The hotel is located right in the middle of the shopping street. You can take a lift from the lobby right into the town centre. You can then walk to the waterfront in a few minutes. Food in the restaurant is excellent, the buffet is amazing. So much choice and an excellent way to spend £30 on some lovely food. Salad, main course selection, cheese board, dessert and ice cream to name a few!
5 stars all across the board.
Had dinner as an early Birthday gift and it was amazing. The food was delicious and the staff were super friendly. The atmosphere was warm 😌✨
My sister and her partner then had a room booked for me to stay the night as a gift. The room was beautiful and the bed was soooo comfortable. Lowkey don't want to leave. Oh, and the hot chocolate that they have in the room is to die for 😋
Would most definitely recommend 😌
Had a wonderful time at the restaurant tonight. The young men working at the bar were prompt, polite, and friendly. Will definitely be coming back :)
Good clean and safe. Breakfast of high quality and lots of fruit on offer. Room service is excellent with good amount of milk for coffee. Difficult to understand parking on first arrival. Parking expensive. Lots of different lifts to get used to. Had enjoyed every moment.
Was an average room. Tv quite small, and walls are thin so you can hear everyone's business.
The beds are comfy, and the shower in the bathroom looks a bit gross, but isn't the worse.
They give you little amenities for your shower, however the shampoo and conditioner is way to small for most people with shoulder length hair to use.
Not the worst, stay however could have been better.
Enjoyed our stay. Rooms had everything we needed, comfy bed a bonus. Loved the fact that a simple ride down the lift and we were in the heart of the city - central location for walking to great shopping and eateries. A little further afield and we found great bars. Would fully recommend for friends and family.
We had a wonderful stay and enjoying the great location and convenience of exploring the city. The room is newly renovated, clean and well kept. My daughter had the really delicious gelato as shown in the photo.
Perfect hotel if you wish to be on the doorstep of Wellington's inner city. Accessible to all public transportation. Great staff, spacious rooms, dining options, and very comfortable beds.
Fabulous from start to finish. Huge shout out to the friendly turn down staff, and the staff in both the restaurant and the bar downstairs. The food was delicious and we chose to eat in house all three nights. Love the use of the Harbour lounge. We loved the view and the super comfortable bed. We will be back.
This place appears to be great value. For the price vs other hotels.in the city you can get very large rooms, with a view. The place is a little dated and the design and layout, but it is well maintained with a handy location and good views. Compared to some.of the.rooms in the boutique hotels in Wellington you don't have to put up with very small rooms, terrible views and often subpar noise insulation. IMO great value if a little dated
Room I stayed in was renovated and very clean and a good view!
Food in the restaurant was terrible, wasted money on the buffet and the al a carte menu seemed the same as room service.
Staff were very nice and the location is great for access to lambtom quay etc.
Use it for daytime car parking and it’s great. Easy to get on and out of. Always plenty of parks. Lifts and payment systems work ok.
Good hotel in a convenient location. Rooms were fairly nice and relatively quiet.
Very happy with our stay here. We came down for the night to watch the Womens World Cup Football. Straight off the motorway to the hotel. Nice clean room for 2 with undercover parking $200 - Fantastic deal. Room service was awesome for a late night dessert after the game - very yummy and quick delivery! Breakfast buffet was amazing! Thanks for the fast and friendly service.
The location is right within walking distance of everything you want to see!
Staff were a little less friendly but still fine.
Rooms were spacious and excellent value.
A lovely hotel in a great spot. Easy access to shops, waterfront and the cable car. Staff were helpful and the coffee ☕ shop in the lobby was ideal for the morning caffeine buzz. Can't open windows on high floors (even a little) which if you have kids is a plus.
Rooms are okay with tea/coffee facilites, mini fridge, room service menu, and central air conditioning. Was expecting higher quality for the price point.
Complimentary wifi available. Parking is available in building. Gym, restaurant/bar options available in building, including buffet continental and full breakfast options.
Tip: Check out third party hotel booking websites as it can be cheaper than booking directly with hotel.
Title: Mixed Experience at the James Cook Hotel Grand Chancellor in Wellington
Rating: 3.5/5 stars
I recently stayed at the James Cook Hotel Grand Chancellor in Wellington and wanted to share my thoughts on the overall experience. While there were certainly positives to highlight, there were also some notable drawbacks that cannot be overlooked. Here's a comprehensive review that covers both the positives and negatives.
Let's start with the positives. One of the standout features of this hotel was its exceptional and friendly staff. From the moment we checked in until we checked out, the hotel staff was always eager to assist us and made us feel welcome. Their dedication and helpfulness added a personal touch to our stay.
Additionally, the hotel's location is undoubtedly a major advantage. Situated in a prime area of Wellington, it provides convenient access to various attractions, shopping centers, and entertainment venues. Whether you're a tourist or a business traveler, you'll appreciate the hotel's proximity to key destinations.
The dining experience was another highlight. The food served at the hotel's restaurant was of good quality, and we thoroughly enjoyed our meals there. The menu offered a decent variety, catering to different preferences, and the service was prompt and attentive.
Furthermore, our 17th-floor room was impressively clean. Housekeeping maintained high standards, and we appreciated returning to a well-maintained and spotless room after a day of exploring the city. The cleanliness added a sense of comfort and relaxation to our stay.
However, it's important to address the negatives as well. The most glaring issue was the evident need for a full refurbishment throughout the hotel. The dated decor and worn-out appearance were noticeable in several areas. The windows in the restaurant were broken, which not only affected the aesthetics but also created discomfort due to noise and temperature fluctuations.
While I still believe the James Cook Hotel Grand Chancellor has its merits, these negatives cannot be ignored. The hotel management should seriously consider investing in a comprehensive refurbishment to improve the overall experience for guests.
In conclusion, despite the positive aspects such as the helpful staff, great location, good food, and cleanliness, it is crucial that the hotel addresses the issues of outdated decor and broken windows. Considering the negatives, I would recommend potential guests to be aware of these drawbacks and to ensure that the price reflects the hotel's need for refurbishment. With the necessary improvements, the James Cook Hotel Grand Chancellor could become a truly exceptional place to stay in Wellington.
We had room 1403.
We got a discounted price of $164 including car park. If we had to pay full price we would have definitely felt overcharged. The Grand has gone out of this lady years ago!
Fors:
Location
Comfy beds
Bath
Reasonable size
Against:
Rippled carpet
Very thin walls
Dated and tired
Unclean air conditioning filters
Grime around bath fittings
Car park instructions poor from reception staff.
We did not use any food/drink facilities.
It was my first time staying there, very helpful staff, the room was nice despite it being on the 25th floor. Although the day wasn't fantastic it still gave a reasonable view. The only gripe I had was the $100 bond for the room, which was pointed out by the staff member who checked me in. Well with staying in if you have the money to do so.
Had brilliant stay here. Room was very comfortable, and having secure parking for car was very welcome added bonus, even though it cost $30 per day. Considered cost small imposition considering was safe and available for entire stay. Food in the hotel restaurant was delicious and service was excellent.
Great accomodation. However, previous guests had boiled milk in the kettle!! I had to clean it as best I could to make a cup of tea. Informed front desk on checkout.
Housekeeping needs to be a little more on the ball....
Ideal location everything was so handy being able to access via elevator to lampton quay .and the staff were so friendly and willing to help. we were able to check in early and on departure they kindly looked after our luggage so we could enjoy the day before flying out would definitely stay there again
Rooms are very dated, single glazing and an overall tired look to the hotel.
The staff are lovely, reception and restaurant teams are welcoming.
Location is very central.
One of the best Hotel in city,.
The service desk, wonderful, always recommend,.my favorite hotel, where I met my friends cooming from overseas,.easy walking distance,in whole city, just in heart of Wellington,. James Cook Grand Hotel,.always recommend this Hotel,as a great place to stay, and enjoying city center,.Great Hotel, always full of visitors, beautiful restaurants, great service, affordable prices, for hotel room, recommended always,.James Cook hotel, grand chancellor, is real icon of great hotel in heart of Wellington business district,James Cook Hotel, always full of people, I think this hotel is one of leading hotel,by guest preference, to be.
I was a last-minute booking due to a change of plans. The staff were very helpful in getting me a room, sorting my parking, and allowing me an early check-in so that I could shower and change before my meeting.
Great location, easy walking distance to Lambton quay street, Lambton harbour, Old Bank shopping Arcade, Cuba Street etc. The hotel has been renovated from my last stay several years ago so the facilities are newer. The front desk service is great.
Perfect Wellington CBD Hotel. Reasonably priced with clean and spacious rooms. Make sure you include breakfast, doubt you'll find a better selection in Wellington! Nice bar (Whitby's) to enjoy a beverage or two before dinner. 🍻
Fantastic staff, fantastic accommodation, fantastic food. Had my favorite beer on tap.
Rooms refurbished and certainly adequate for what we need. Lacking coffee, as in plunger capabilities.
Other than that rest ok
Had a wonderful stay here for 2 nights. Ezekiel and Jet in the bar were fabulous - lovely manner about them both & great service. Rosa and Lua the egg chef Lua at breakfast - also amazing. The people made the stay, it was lovely.
Great location right in the middle of everything. Outstanding buffet for dinner and breakfast - huge selection. Room was comfortable and the bathroom clean.
Rooms are a little shabby, need a refurbishment, carpet lifting, woodwork blistering from moisture, but adequate. We were in family suite 1214. Restaurant service was impeccable. Room service was disappointing. Reception check out was rude. Location is perfect being central city. Good for walking or bus routes up town.
Excellent location, clean and spacious room. Helpful front desk and staffs. We enjoyed using the gym in the evening too as shops close rather early in winter. Had an enjoyable 2-night stay.
Very good location. Terrace room we stayed is clean and comfortable, just may need a bit update on the bathroom in the future. The service is outstanding. Staff were very helpful and friendly. Will be back there when visiting Wellington again in the future.
Great location, and that's about it. Room was extremely old and very poor bathroom layout. Had a room near the elevators, so that kept us awake a bit. Was very expensive also for very basic room. Staff were new and not knowable about the hotel amenities.
Perfect location for me, ā lift ride down to Lambton Quay, with the work office in one direction and the hub of the CBD in the other.
Was very underwhelmed, and the staff were not welcoming or friendly. The room didn't feel clean. I wouldn't stay again.
Staff were lovely & helpful. The beds were so comfy & the rooms clean. Special mention to Jack & Brianna at Whitbys for their fab service, well priced food, great location but for $240 a night I expect my fries not to be cooked in old oil, a bigger room, we had a twin, water in the fridge, better tea/coffee facilities and setup, tucked away in a drawer was pretty shabby, heating that worked, we were either hot or roasting, better decor in the rooms, free parking and more parking space outside the front door to check in and get a card to allow us to park. Move the taxis onto the road or to the reserved area. Not sure I'd stay here again. More a 3 star than 4 and way overpriced.
Did not stay there, only went for buffet dinner. The food was good, matched a lot of other much cheaper buffets. I would not say that this was worth the $75 cost, which was the buffet and 1 soft drink. Whew! Would have never gone if I had asked price before hand
Spacious rooms. Great comfy bed. Very clean. Friendly staff.
Avoid breakfast. Expensive and the worst food and coffee I have ever had. I paid full price for two pieces of toast as that's all you could eat. Dinner was beautiful and the ladies that looked after us were amazing.
The lounge on the 26th is great, lovely view and great to work out just chill. Rooms are adequate, nothing to fancy. Beds a bit soft for my liking but certainly doable. Breakfast is a bit weird, they seem to boil the bacon, making it soft and squishy... And grey! 😱
Dinner (steak) was great although potatoes were bland and uninspired, and the cheese plate overpriced.
Staff is lovely.
Really nice room. The beds were amazing! Nice bathroom. Service was great. Located in a great area where you don't need to drive anywhere, you can just walk. Really easy checkout. We really enjoyed our stay
I was there for business, from Australia for 4 nights and stayed in one of the refurbished rooms. Room was well sized and the bed was comfortable, but I was alone, so I would imagine that the two- single mattresses connected via a fitted sheet would be less comfortable for couples. I don't think it qualifies as a 4-star as it doesn't have a safe. I like to lock up my passport when on international travel. Further, there were no drawers for socks and jocks. I had to stack the in the top of the closet, where usually put other things. Both of these are curious omissions considering the room was refurbished in the past year or two. On the service side, I did ask for ice delivery twice during my stay, and it was promptly delivered and free. The young lady in the coffee shop in the lobby was a delight. My coffee order is what some would consider "picky" and she'd never heard of it, but she delivered it, well-made with a smile. Location: The hotel was very well located, and I used the back lift that delivers one to the corner of Lambton Quay and Grey Street. I was informed of this lift from a business colleague, not the check-in staff. I think it would be a nicety for the hotel staff to alert guests to its existence. Users should be aware that the lifts also service a multi-floor garage, so add a few minutes to your time if you're planning to use it during morning and afternoon peak times. WiFi: I used the basic that was available to all guests, but prepared to upgrade if necessary. I found it to be more than adequate for my needs. I was able to log into my work account and didn't experience any lagging. I didn't do any streaming other than the odd youtube that might be embedded in Facebook. Overall it was a nice stay, but as mentioned, probably shouldn't be considered 4-star considering lack of safe.
Our GPS had trouble directing us to this Hotel. But the location is central and very convenient. Our stay was very good despite the building upgrade.
The food was excellent especially the whole salmon and king prawns salads the pudding you could contenuos eat. I tasted what I loved the drinks and the mood was amazing we watched the semis and the Warriors lost rather dissapointed...great company and so were the other guest never a dull moment. My phone was flat lol
Ok.
The room was clean and reasonably priced.
Decent location.
Customer service was excellent.
Big shout out to Kenneth on the reception,an asset to the business.
A great hotel located right in the middle of the main shopping streets.
Very nice rooms with newly upgraded bathrooms.
Excellent staff helped with a few room requests and always smiled.
Overall thoroughly recommended...and will return again.
The rooms here are basic as in don't expect too much. Also the staff is okay, not very welcoming. Location is very good.
This was a really enjoyable stay for me. Highlight was hearing an employee have cheerfull and helpful conversations with other guests over breakfast. When he came to my table he just politely asked if he could take the empty plates as I sat there drinking my strong black coffee. So friendly helpful and the man can read the mood!
HUGE room. I wish we would have known about the lift in the back to save us from hiking up the hill every day! Great location. We walked everywhere. Didn’t need a car while we were in town, nor an Uber. Located near some great restaurants.
The rooms are a good, but only two shampoos etc for four people for two nights was poor judgement. Also annoying is paying $30 per day for parking and each time you go out you have to get a new access card to get back in. Each time you have to wait for someone to come from the back and the taxi drivers are very unhappy about anyone in their spot - even when all other spots are full!
It is stock standard type hotel. I struggled with the tv remote. The bed was uncomfortable but they fixed that on the 2nd night. It cost me over 350 a night. At that price I expect more. If it was 200 a night well rating higher. If you are paying top dollar you expect more. Parking was not free but you can park on the street from 8pm to 8am for free.
Our stay was great!! Comfortable bed, clean room and bathroom. Spacious and quiet. Jackie J was able to get us into the room early, as our flight arrived at 8am. Jackie J, Cassie and the team made our stay flawless and being on floor 25 was awesome with great rooms!! One night left and could stay here for many more!
Still currently staying here. The staff have been really friendly and welcoming. When first entering the reception was very informative. The rooms are comfortable, tidy and modern. The rooms are cleaned to a high standard each day, and they have a green option where you can be environmentally friendly and not have the cleaning service and receive a $10 voucher for the restaurant.
The customer service at the James Cook Hotel was exceptional. All staff were friendly and went the extra mile. Greeted me with a smile all the time. Homely and clean facilities.
I used the ECO label on my door and got a discount on a buffet meal.
The buffet dinner on Sunday night was absolutely divine. The chef cooked my butter chicken right before my eyes. The Butter Chicken was tender.
An elevator ride to Lampton Quay.....awesome stay
I will stay again
Thank you James Cook Hotel Grand Chancellor staff - it is the people that transform a homely place into a palace
That is what makes people want to return over and over again!!
Lovely suite, very clean, with everything I needed, warm and comfortable. Beds very comfortable. Showers had water pressure that felt like a massage .
Staff very professional and friendly. Helpful with anything at all.
And the option to take the elevator to Lampton Quay! I highly recommend this Hotel and will return.
Was alright to stay for a couple nights. Service was great. Location great. Bummer about the gym not open before 830am on weekends because of apparent noise to guests. Too late for us, as wanted to have a cheeky workout before the days plans. But oh well.
Receptionist was a little off on arrival. Just felt like the issue we had was a little annoying to sort. It was sorted in the end but definitely ruined the "Holiday Spirit" Housekeeping were awesome. Very attentive if you need anything like towels etc they are more than happy to help . Clean hotel. Everything you need in the room. On check out (different receptionist) was very helpful. Bags can be left to hold after check out as my flight was not till later that afternoon which was a nice touch and left a mostly positive feeling about the stay.
We stayed at the James Cook over Easter. The team were friendly and helpful. We felt the price was reasonable. Not top end but affordable. Location is great being directly off the Motorway Terrace exit, good parking either in the James Cook (at a cost) or on the street near by and easy access directly onto Lambton Quay. Room was standard set up very clean with a new wet floor shower which was great. We had a few drinks at the Restaurant before heading out and they had a great team a good selection of wine and craft beer and a good view. Apparently a Panio bar but I'm unsure on days/times. The only reason for the 4 star was that our bed was uncomfortable. Everyone is different and it might have been just us. Very reasonable and would stay again.
Room was ok, but the walls are very thin and you can hear the other guests in the hallway. Breakfast was average at best. Missing options like fruit some mornings. Good location for central Wellington.
A very good property in Wellington. Located centrally in Terrace. The rooms are big, the bed is very convenient, working table with Lan connection comes handy. The rest rooms are decent size and toiletries are good quality. Room has iron box and ironing board. Mini bar has decent collection. However the pricing is on the higher side. At present one of the lift is under maintenance, if you are in higher floor, you will end up waiting long to go down during busy hours. Breakfast spread is decent. Check in experience was fast and efficient. Overall very satisfying.
Stayed in one of the renovated rooms, which are very nice with walk in showers. The room was clean and well appointed as well as USB charging points. The food at the hotel is very nice but it would be better if they had there bar open later into the night. The staff were very friendly and accommodating.
Nice downtown hotel. They have a buffet breakfast and a gym. Parking in the adjacent garage for about 30 dollars a night. Friendly service.
I liked this place because I booked at short notice and they bumped me to one of their flash rooms on the top floor. These rooms, and the service/goodies are fantastic.
I took one star off because next time I stayed I didn’t get a fancy room so I was a bit bummed out. Stayed two nights and I almost had a severe bout of depression. It’s not really very fair giving someone something nice then taking it away. Shame on you.
Once I got over myself I realised it was a lovely place.
But I’m keeping my star, just like I kept all the coffee and tea sachets. And the toiletries. 🤘🏻
Great service, great staff. Rooms are nice and clean. Perfect location. A lot of ammenities near by. I really enjoyed my stay here. Looking forward to future stays! Buffet breakfast is awesome. Room service is fantastic. Thanks Team
Very clean, great ammenities. Room service was fantastic!!
Whilst you are located in the Wellington CBD, it is somewhat of a walk to the waterfront and museum.
An excellent hotel.
They were extremely helpful, including ordering me a taxi, having a swift valet service, and allowing me to leave my bags with them when only my grandfather was checked in (I checked in the following day). So, they were very accommodating.
My room was enormous and had a great view. It also had a large ensuite including a bath. This was all at a very reasonable price.
The breakfast buffet had everything I could possibly want, including French toast, pastries, bacon, and eggs cooked however you want on request.
Very clean and loved the eco room service (which they give you a $10 in-hotel restaurant voucher for each night you select that room service option! Win-win)
Loverly room very close central city with lift down to central Wellington.
Stayed for our 10th wedding anniversary. Comfortable refurbished room. Friendly, helpful staff. Location is close to waterfront restaurants and bars. In-room wifi was good. We booked the Grand Occasion package from the hotel website which included a bottle of bubbly, buffet breakfast, parking and 1pm checkout.
The only negative was noise from people in the hallway in the middle of the night.
Loved it and we will be back!
This place is very nice.
The staff are amazing, the location is convenient, the room is awesome and the overall experience at the buffet (both at breakfast and dinner) were marvelous.
There's only one problem I had with this place and it was to do with the air conditioning in the room that I was in. It didn't cool down the place very much. In the afternoon, the sun was beaming onto the side of the building where my room was. Shutting the curtains to block the light wasn't enough. I hoped the air con would provide relief but it was lack luster at best.
If you visit in late Autumn or Winter it will probably be a better experience 🥰
9/10
Oh my goodness where do I start. The staff needs more training.no greeting.the girl on reception said "you checking in" .no hello or good afternoon.she told us we had to pay an extra $100 per night. When I asked her why that much, all she said was you will get it back.but I tried to tell her that was cutting into our holiday spending money.she didn't make any comment.just shrugged her shoulders.she didn't care. Also your bar staff needs to find out how to make a gin and tonic.she used a half pint beer glass, then filled it up with tonic to the top.instead of asking if I wanted the tonic separate.we have used James Cook hotel many times. This experience has been very disappointing. If I was a hotel inspector, you would be loosing a star. Rude staff, need more training.
I joined my friend staying in the hotel for breakfast around 8am and was served by one of your workers Ali. We was greatly impressed by the service and PR skills Ali provided. Super friendly and welcoming! Just proof that no matter how nice the furnishings or decor is, what really matters is the staff. Really really impressed with this young lady, absolute pleasure to talk with her.
We had an awesome stay at James Cook Hotel Grand Chancellor in Wellington. It's accessible location to the CBD as well as large rooms and amenities makes it an ideal hotel to stay during our visits in Wellington! Will definitely be back in the future!
Two things that needed improvements were the quality of the beds provided and staff at the breakfast buffet which kept asking if we wanted to remove our plates (which got pretty annoying by the end of our stay).
Very comfortable. Heating was touchy as we tried to cool it down a bit. Got too hot over night so we didnt sleep well. Pillows were beautiful. By night 2 we got it right, best sleep. Taxis out side, lobby lift no.2 took you to Lampton Quay and shops. Happy to come back here again.
Receptionist Roshab was super welcoming and made check in STRESS FREE for our family. Rooms were nice and comfortable. Such friendly and helpful staff, house keeping was prompt and ready. Thank you for making our Wellington stay a blast. Stay safe team you are all doing an amazing job during the Wellington convoy protest as well :)
Can't fault this hotel, staff are really friendly and very helpful. Location, you are in walking distance of a lot of things. Rooms are clean and modern.
Go to accommodation and breakfast buffet in my family. Rooms are nice with views of the central city. Good bar adjoining the restaurant where the food can be a bit last century. I had Groper which was nice but came surrounded by a very heavy buttery sauce.
Had a nice stay here a couple of times now in the city suite. Extra room to spread out and relax. Good location to explore Wellington from on a beam or this time we took the e-bikes.
We recently stayed atm James cook in Wellington after purchasing a deal from grab one. The parking building in right next door to the hotel so easy to get back to the car if needed. Check in was simple, even with the grab one deal. I spoke with Julian at the reception who was helpful and explained all the bonuses of our deal which included a food voucher and breakfast for the 2day stay. There was a man playing the piano when we came down from the car park which set a lovely tone to our first visit.
Our room was on the 26th floor in a new refurbished deluxe room. We had a welcome gift of chocolate and bliss balls which was a lovely touch. The room was a nice size with a king bed and great blackout curtains. The bathroom was spacious with a great selection of shampoos and body creams/face cleansers. The fan in the bathroom is constantly on, I’m unsure if this is normal and if it should be linked to the light but it was quite noticeable, less so with the door closed. My husband sleeps with a fan so the sound wasn’t an issue for us but it may be for others. The internet was great and we were able to cast our Netflix from our phone to the tv and it was fairly easy to achieve. The room was cosy and the bed comfortable, slightly softer than we are use to but no complaints. The only suggestion I have is that a mirror in the room itself would be helpful especially if you’re trying to have showers and get ready to go out at the same time.
Our package include access to the harbour view room which was on the same floor as our room and was a wonderful addition to our stay, the view was beautiful and the complimentary drinks, fruit and cookies were excellent.
At the end of the lobby there is a lift that takes you to the car park or down to Lambton Quay where you can find everything you need including a countdown supermarket just to the left of the walkway This was super convenient.
We used our food voucher by ordering room service and found the food to be delicious. Breakfast was at the Whitbys restaurant on the 17th floor, we had the full buffet and loved the fresh poached eggs, the view was also lovely even with the scaffolding up.
Check out was fast and without fuss and we left having had a wonderful couple of days. We will definitely stay again and happily recommend James Cook to friends.
This is a interesting hotel, centred in the heart of Wellington new zealand; sadly the shops were closed in the hotel and we never got to enjoy them.
The city view from the hotel is quite hindered, the room we stayed in needed a clean.
The staff were truly wonderful, it was an honour meeting them.
I enjoyed staying here. Food was impressive and so was the price for what we got! The rooms were comfortable and welcoming! I hope you get the chance kids or not its a relaxing stay that anyone will enjoy.
We stayed here for a weekend to attend a friends wedding. First of all I can’t speak highly enough of the staff; friendly accommodating and a pleasure to deal with. Next is the location; driving in is so easy, and from there you can walk to a number of great attractions. The cable car is next door, and if your room is on the hill side of the hotel you can watch it come and go, which is really cool. They are renovating at the moment, but we couldn’t hear anything, so I’d expect it will be even better in the future too. We will certainly be back.
We came here for dinner on the 27/3/23 and High Tea on the 28/3/22. Next time we come down to Wellington we will try and book our rooms at the James Cook Hotel. The staff are brilliant. And your elevator is the best I have used. Thank you, from Ruth Read
Our ferry from Picton arrived very late and we got to the hotel at 2am. The staff here were very gracious and helpful with a late check out and taking care of the car.
The room and facilities were great for the price. Very handy to the city
Thanks James Cook.
Great location,nice room,friendly staff
The location is great with easy access to lambton quay , however we stayed on two separate occasions over 2 weeks and the first room the air con wasn’t working and the 2nd room the toilet didn’t flush properly, this is a perfectly adequate hotel but it’s a bit dated and things do need upgrading
The hotel in general is great. The restaurant food is good, the decor could do with some updating. Beds in the rooms are very comfortable. The staff ared particularly helpful and genuinely friendly which is always a nice addition when you're away from home.
Me & the wife stayed here recently
It was $30 to use the Wilson carpark next door for the day through James Cook
Comfy bed, clean, tidy with a good shower
Room service you pay them at your room
For the lift you use your room card and put in the floor your going too.
This hotel is at a great location between the Terrace and Lambton Quay. Both check-in and check-out were smooth with the front desk staff doing their job efficiently. The room was pretty spacious and gave us a nice view of the Terrace. Housekeeping did a good job and the elderly gentleman working in housekeeping was friendly. By using one set of elevators from the lobby, it was easy to get to Lambton Quay.
Loved my stay here. Comfortable bed and decent shower. Worth paying a bit more for a fantastic stay.
The pros... Service was really good. Food was really good as was the selection. Staff were attentive and we were asked a couple of times if things were OK.. The cons prices are a bit steep.. Bar was not prepared couldn't have the beer I wanted because they had not tapped a new keg for dinner service and the windows were a little dirty which was a shame because that view is nice!! But these were small things... All in all not a bad experience would like to go back when it's less crowded and not a Xmas dinner menu to see any differences.
Amazing staff and rooms, great location and great housekeepers. Check-in was easy and we were allowed to put some bags in the hotel hours before we were meant to check in. We had a fire alarm go off but staff were professional and gave out free slippers (I still have mine!) 5 out of 5!
Stayed 4 nights in King suite with harbour view access & Buffet Breakfast included.
Checked in early & were allowed access to Harbour view lounge whilst waiting for room to be ready.
Room was ready before 12pm.
Very impressed by fabulous views from the lounge & also from our room.
Huge King size bed in the room but thought the couch & chairs could have been a little bit more comfortable but no big deal.
Harbour view lounge had coffee maker can's of fizzy, selection of juices, selection of nuts, marshmallows & cookies.
Buffet breakfast in Whitbys was OK has cooking station for poached eggs, omelette & pancakes.
Our last night we thoroughly enjoyed the dinner buffet, the Chefs really nailed it, the meat dishes were cooked to perfection & vegetables done al denta.
Lambton Quay awesome location, so close to water front for a walk on a lovely day & also convenient to Courtenay Place for many dinning options.
Highly reccomend Majestic Cusine, Indian alley K.C Cafe & takeaway for the best roast duck ever
Rooms could do with an update. Paid a hefty price for a Presidents Club room on the top level which I was told at the time of booking had partial harbour views. There was no partial harbour view at all... I’m 6ft 3” tall and barely fit between the roof and the raised shower over bath set up which seemed to have come straight out of the 80’s. The bed also was a strange set up, King Size, but with some kind of inbuilt frame providing barely any support and plenty of squeak. Other than these things... we had a lovely meal in the restaurant and the view from the club lounge was enjoyable.
Wonderful food, smorgasbord and great service. The piano player is the same, playing familiar tunes I remember him playing 30 years ago. I noticed the young staff being very kind to him ( he is blind). The dining room was in full swing, full of people having fun and enjoying the whole experience
I booked for the wrong night!! I felt ridiculous honestly shaking my head. Arrived there and they had a lovely guy…named Jack who was in training, I made sure I got his name on his badge so I could include it in my review lol. He was super helpful and got us in so THANKYOU! life saver.
Room was great but it’s always the people who make me remember a place 🤍🤍
Conveniently located in the middle of the city with an elevator bringing you down to Main Street .
What I was unaware of was the fact that the hotel is divided into a rejuvenated -redone section and an older somewhat tired section ….
I landed up in the older one which was adequate but very dated .
Shower in bathtub …..carpet tired . No view at all looking into a gloomy courtyard which can become noisy as cleaning staff start to make use of the bins for cleaning purposes in early morning hours ….
Parking is conveniently right next door @$30 per day …..
Great location in the heart of Wellington. Rooms were clean and well serviced. Buffet restaurant onsite is great value.
It was great to be back at the James Cook. The recent refurbished rooms are quite nicely, if simply, done. We stayed in a suite which had stunning views to the bays and Mt. Victoria. While we were there my wife had a birthday and the James Cook team made it very special with some lovely surprised for us. We won't forget it in a hurry. We felt quite special bring back there after a few years away. The staff are always awesome. We love the location too which is within walking distance of great restaurants, bars and tourist things to do. The TV service is not great and the restaurants are on limited hours post the Covid-19 lockdown which is why I haven't given a full 5 stars this time. But either way James Cook will continue to a favourite of ours.
Staffs are helpful. Room furniture are most likely in the 90s as can see that it's aged. Beds are still comfortable. Overall I still enjoyed my stay and its definitely worth what I have paid for.
Generally good value, great location. Hotel is going through modernisation so not all lifts work so you will have to wait at lift or squeeze in. If using debit card you have to pay a bond and when checking out staff will have to check your room before they refund bond so expect a considerable wait when checking out (so leave lots of time) Food there is very good though and a highlight of the stay (hence the higher score)
Superb hotel in the heart of the city. Sure on The Terrace but is a short elevator trip down to Lampton Quay, the main shopping area in Wellington.
Staff are friendly and very knowledgeable and helpful. Rooms are very clean and tidy. Food is great even though eating out is always an option. Wish I could stay longer.
I stay at many Hotels and James Cook by far exceeds them all by way of service! The decor is not modern and 5 star but its clean and homely. And the service by ALL staff makes me choose James Cook over any Hotel any day!
Parking and Wifi is easy, access to State Highway is easy. I love this place and location.
We had a very nice room. Quite spacious good sized tv. Wifi included in the price. Good sized bathroom with vanity room for toilet bags. Good water pressure in the shower. Bed was firm without being too hard. Very centrally located.
Great service, nice rooms, wonderful breakfast. Rooms on the top floor include access to a floor lounge. The lounge has an amazing room and stocked with snacks and beverages. During happy hour it includes drinks and hors d'oeuvres service. Fantastic place to kick back and get a little work done on a business trip.
Went to Whitby's Restaurant at The Grand Chancellor Wellington for a buffet breakfast. The selection of food to choose from was amazing! Everything tasted wonderful also and the highlight was the live cooking station where we were able to order fresh omelettes and pancakes. Not to mention it's quite wonderful go be breakfasting 17 stories up! 10/10
Fabulous staff, Great coffee, and amazing service in the bar/ cafe upstairs
Awesome buffet breakfast, great variety and lovely food. Good rooms, clean and roomy enough. Staff very polite and friendly. Ideal central location. This will be my go to now, whenever going to Wellington
One of the best hotel for visiting Wellington!
First this hotel is in the middle of Wellington downtown, this hotel has direct lift access to the Willies St, which is very convenient to walk to the pier, or do some shopping in the Countdown supermarket. We had the breakfast buffet at 17th floor for two days. The food there is very good, fresh and different variety. My check-in experience is great, I called the front desk few days ago and asked for two rooms next to each other, which they had reserved two nice view rooms that is at the end of 19th floor, which we love so much! Thanks for helping!
I would highly recommend this hotel to others!
Always a great place to stay. Such a great location... catch the lift straight down to Lambton Quay. Easy access from the motorway. Love the buffet breakfast.
Great place to stay. 4*. Clean and friendly. Perfectly placed in Wellington CBD. We always enjoy our stay here.
Another fantastic stay this weekend. Everything was great despite the difficulties imposed by Covid. Lance and Rosey in Whitby's restaurant were awesome hosts as usual. We missed the buffet but the food was awesome anyway! Thanks guys.
A slightly older hotel, meaning the rooms are more spacious than normal. The interiors have been modernized tastefully, a $30-00 room upgrade was offered to me on check-in and it was well worth the investment
Friendly service. All meals were fantastic. Central Wellington. Elevator from hotel to central lampton quay. Couldn't have been a better choice(and very reasonable price at $144 per night for 2 people)
Excellent staff and customer service. The rooms are dated, which is most evident in the bathroom (swollen wood near the sink- and a need for regrouting).
They do a good job of incentivising “eco services” - where they only to a basic make up of your room instead of the whole deal. If you choose an eco service they give you a $10 voucher for their restaurant.
The view for some of the rooms is an office block about 50m away
I got to check in at 10:30am- which was very convenient.
Loved my stay in this hotel, staff were nice, room was great and good value for your money! Loved the harbour lounge too! Was so happy with my stay definitely will be back!
Lovely hotel in the heart of the CBD.
Easy to find off the motorway, and easy to get out to visit other areas or go north.
Lifts down to Lambton Quay and shops/cafes.
Very reasonable room rates, especially for the an Executive King room.
A pity that a lot of noise came through the door from the corridor (ok, it was New Year's eve).
It's now our first choice of accommodation in Wellington.
Great to see James Cook supporting Forest and Bird with the custom toiletries. A worthy cause and very timely given F&B today winning a court case against MP Stuart Nash for putting commercial interests before the environment.
The hotel itself is nice, but I would cover back again for the environmentally friendly way the place is run.
We booked our wedding here last week. Bayley organized it perfectly at the hotel for us. We chose the hotel because it was central to our families in NZ. Everyone could fly in, one taxi and then no need to leave for anything. We were gifted a stay in a huge suite on the 25th floor 2502, which was awesome. Our wedding was held in a chancellor room on level 16 with a high tea, then everyone came to dinner on level 17. It was freezing outside, but very comfortable inside. Our older family members found it very easy to get around, not having to go outside. The high tea was beautifully presented, fresh and tasty. We had many options so had exactly what we wanted. Dinner was excellent, a mexican buffet, cooked by mexican cooks, over for the festival. We loved it. Thank you James Cook Chancellor, Bayley, and all the lovely, professional staff who made it a really special time for us.
Had a smorgasbord birthday.
Unfortunately the set up of seating and food was not good at all. Two different rooms with two way customer and staff doorway just a massive road block. Staff were trying hard but set up was against them.
Food a little underwhelming.
4/5 depending on price point (mid tier). She’s a little tired in places, even though decor and such are modern enough. For example, wind whistling through/around window joinery. Clean enough and does the job. Staff were excellent. Very close to Lambton Quay. Short stroll to parliament.
Impeccable service! New refurbished rooms were very nicely done and the harbour view from the room was great. Beyond a doubt it’s the staff in both the restaurant and hotel that make this place great.
A grand old gentleman! Modern in the background but with all the features of olde world brass and wood in the forefront. The staff are friendly, efficient and knowledgeable. High tea was another unexpected pleasure, and you can definitely dress for it!
Overall a nice well maintained hotel.
In the process of being renovated as some suites have the 1970s feel about them.
Restaurant and cafe serve a good meal with staff very attentive and friendly.
A beautiful experience, we had a high tea with bottomless tea. Lovely food and tea selection. High tea was served in the bar, great view of the city and away from the lunch diners. An enjoyable afternoon.
Quality hotel with great staff. Have always expected the best from them and have always received it. Have never been let down. Great access to city centre and good food at bar & restaurant
Had a satisfactory stay here , room a little dated . Staff were friendly and courteous
Perhaps not a luxury 4 star hotel but we thought it was ok
Better than one would assume good cleaning skills for rooms they got the not so obvious dirt when the room wad serviced that I left behind. Not so fussed with food on offer as not my thing. Food from there cafe was great for breakfast the Buffett was ok
Great place to stay 😁 clean tidy rooms. and the staff were absolutely outstanding the service brilliant food really good, we had lovely time in Wellington
I stayed at the James Cook Hotel Grand Chancellor as part of a larger group. Check in was easy and reception staff were very friendly.
The room was well kept and there is 500mb free wi-fi per day with the option to purchase more.
There are conference and meeting rooms and a couple of restaurants and bars within. There are also gym facilities. There was easy access to the CBD and shops.
My stay at the hotel also fell on the night of the 7.8m earthquake on 14 Nov 16 which caused a bit of movement on the 24th floor. The staff did their best to provide support to guests which was impressive given the situation.
A very nice hotel. Comfortable rooms and comfortable beds. Nice buffet meal the evening we arrived. Very hospitable friendly staff. Thanks.
Loved our stay. The bed was absolutely amazing. Didn't want to get out of it this morning. Was lovely and clean. Whitby's restaurant was fantastic.
The room appointment was dated, but it used high quality timbers so you didn’t mind. All joinery was solidly made. Service was good too.
Got to my room had to wait 30mins for maintenance to check fuses for my room, no lights? Rang manager and they sorted me out, I asked for complimentary drinks for the inconveniences.
The Club Lounge perks was lovely. Nami-san was a joy to talk to. The rooms are great, except for some toilet stains. No water view though from the rooms.
Had our golden aniversary dinner.
We didn't have any big business hotels in New Zealand, so we had to adapt a bit, but the hotel itself is very good. The staff was super helpful and nice, the room was good, the evening buffet was rich and tasty. It bothers us when you can't open the windows in the room, but that's often the case in hotels with aircon. 15 min walk down to Harbor Front. Arriving by car is a bit chaotic as there are almost no short-term stopping places.
Very good hotel, excellent service and unbeatable location
We only spent one night there and were on the upper floors. Clean, quiet room. Room service brought us our food within 30 minutes, despite a lack of staff. Nice staff. Breakfast buffet on the 17th floor was delicious.
Located halfway up the hill right in front of the promenade overlooking the sea, the hotel is equipped with a lift that takes you directly to the center at sea level. The rooms are large, clean and have everything you need to prepare coffee or tea. The staff at the reception are very courteous, the parking service inside the hotel is available for a fee but is very useful. Good quality/price ratio.
The hotel is in an excellent location. It has parking (for a fee) and the structure is nice, but a little dated. The rooms are comfortable (large beds and bathrooms with shower). The hotel lobby is connected to the city center by a lift. Excellent starting point for visiting the city (harbour, Te Papa museum, Cable car, etc.). The wifi connection is free.
The fairly large hotel (although the rooms on the lower floors don't seem to be available at the moment) is located in the center on the main shopping street. The bus stop from the airport is practically right in front of the door (cable car). From there you can reach the hotel through a small shopping arcade; the main entrance is at the back of the building. You can already tell the age of the house from the constantly overcrowded lifts. The reception tried hard but was not very competent. I had booked a room in the executive area on the last floor, it is very bright and quiet. The room is quite spacious, the furnishings are a bit worn, as is the medium-sized bathroom. There is an executive lounge with a very nice view of the harbor, good appetizers and alcoholic drinks for free in the evening, otherwise drinks and coffee are available there all day. As an executive guest you also have the (rather mediocre) breakfast in the main restaurant on the 17th floor, which also looks quite shabby. The small business center in the executive area was out of service, but I was given free use of the PC in the entrance area. Somehow the whole hotel seems quite dusty and worn out. So middle class at best.
Direct access to the city center and the nearby port by elevator is undoubtedly the strong point of this hotel. |However, a little refreshment of the rooms would be welcome, especially the bathroom. |Exceptional service: five days after my departure, I realized that I had forgotten some things there. A simple email allowed me to get in touch with the department concerned. |I collected them all three days later in the hotel in Aukland where I finished my stay as I had indicated to Puaga, the assistant housekeeper, whom I would particularly like to thank for her professionalism. |I highly recommend.
The reception at the reception is very nice. We were helped immediately with all issues and in a very friendly manner. The room is big enough, very clean and tidy. The furnishings are no longer the most up-to-date, but this is not a problem.||From the hotel you can get to the city center very quickly. It is also conveniently located on the motorway, which you don't notice.||I would stay in this hotel again in a heartbeat!
The hotel has everything to be good: location, size, frequency, but it seems to me that no investment has been made to modernize it for a long time! We stayed in a family suite and despite being expensive, the room was very simple. The ridiculous shower area. We all had to bend down to take a shower, as the shower was super low. Strangely, the sink was separate from the rest of the bathroom and the shower and toilet area seemed to be of a different standard. Very simple! Breakfast ok but nothing special! The view from the room was the hotel parking lot! Horrible and debauched!
We stayed at this hotel for just one night as a stopover between the north and south islands. It is very convenient in the centre, despite being further away it has a lift connection to the streets of the centre. It is located 15 minutes walk from Te Papa. The wifi is free only in the lobby and the room is quite large and welcoming. The view leaves something to be desired! The staff is very kind. The only negative note is the cost of the car valet, which is $25 per night. A bit much in my opinion. But there aren't many alternative solutions.
Currently undergoing remodeling. Feels old. They would like to say that they are a luxury hotel, but they are not as good as the 2-star hotels in Korea. It's close to Lambton Quay Station, in the center of Wellington, but you may have a hard time finding your way around if you rely on your navigation system. The spa bath is low and small. Refrigerator drinks and even snacks are not welcome. There is a fee. I've seen stories of people who have stayed at a hotel making a fuss when they return home. I think they may be misunderstanding things like service charges. Laundry service, of course, charges per item. We didn't have to use it though. The queen size bed was comfortable, but I suspected one had bed bugs. The heating was a bit noisy. You may wake up occasionally while sleeping. The bedding is a bit smelly. Yes, I am dissatisfied for many other reasons. I think the fee is very excessive compared to the facilities. The staff were friendly. However, I cannot give a good score because the facilities were not good. It wasn't anything serious, but it wasn't a good place by any means.
The hotel is well located in the heart of Wellington with easy access to shops, museums, parks and harbor areas. However, the rooms are shabby, the carpets worn and the furniture from another era. The hotel is very busy and the service is not always courteous, especially the staff at the breakfast buffet. The internet connection is unstable and expensive.
The structure is a little dated but the rooms are large, equipped with every comfort and clean. The breakfast is good (if included in the rate, otherwise it is a bit expensive, as is the parking). Convenient to everything (after all, Wellington is small). They should definitely improve the wifi: only 100mb is included for 24 hours, and it runs out quickly. Let's say that 4 and a half stars is a bit much, but if you find a good rate (and make sure it has breakfast and parking included, otherwise it will cost you the same) it's ok. Some problems with my booking, I have to call to reverse an expense that is not due.
4/5 star hotel located in the city center, very convenient both to reach and to board the ferry. Large car park although expensive but essential given the almost impossibility of parking on the street. It has an elevator that takes you directly to the central streets close to the places of greatest interest. Excellent Wii Fi. The only flaw is the lack of a safe. Advised.
The advantages: excellent location, with elevator leading directly to the shopping street and the port. Comfortable and well-equipped connecting rooms. Excellent buffets, both at breakfast and in the evening. Bar with pleasant view of the city. ||||Cons: raised bathtub with steps (slippery and a little dangerous). “Old-fashioned” shower curtain. Not great view and problem with window insulation (the wind was blowing extremely strong). Quite impersonal hotel.
I had a great time, a luxury hotel at a more than reasonable price. In the centre, close to everything, especially the ferry to the South Island. Very kind staff. If you want to save money, avoid breakfasts and lunches inside. You leave your keys and they park your car, which costs the same as leaving it on the street. Highly recommended.
The building itself is old and currently under renovation. We stayed for two nights in a room on the 24th floor. Although the room was old, it was clean and clean. The bathroom was spacious with a bathtub, and the bed and room were good. Since the weather was so bad, I think I spent more time in the hotel than I normally would on a trip, but on Saturday morning, the sirens went off and I had to take the stairs down to the bottom of the hotel and then walk into the entrance of the building next door. All hotel guests had to evacuate. At that time, there was no response from the hotel staff, and although they handed out blankets a long time later, there was no explanation, and I was dissatisfied. There didn't seem to be any smoke or other damage, and the staff were all relaxed, so I said I'd rather go out if I was going to have to wait outside for a long time, but they asked me to wait here, but there weren't many people. I couldn't understand it because it didn't seem to have been checked. If I hadn't had this experience, this hotel would have been in a good location and I could have easily accessed the city using the elevator. Other than this and the lack of free WIFI, everything was good.
Contrary to all the reviews I have read, I will say that I was pleasantly surprised by this hotel. It is ideally located, functional, the staff available and efficient. The room is spacious with shower and bathtub. Clean and very quiet. The breakfast is plentiful. I recommend for a nice stay in Wellington.
The hotel is centrally located close to restaurants, bars and the Te Papa museum. The desk staff are friendly and check-in was efficient. Unfortunately, there is paid parking in the street on weekdays from 8 a.m. The hotel's parking garage could be an alternative.||The rooms (mine was on the 14th floor) and hallways are quite dated and in need of a makeover, including the bathroom. The white fluorescent light in the bathroom is very cold and although the bathroom has everything you would expect, it is a bit dated. The water pressure of the shower head was mediocre (compared to that of the sink). The bed, on the other hand, is wonderful and comfortable. Slept well. ||I didn't have breakfast at the hotel.
This is a great hotel for the price. If you don't mind slightly older facilities, I recommend this hotel. The Wellington Cable Car entrance is right next to it, and since it is located downtown, it is easily accessible to restaurants and supermarkets. Valet parking is available for vehicles, so parking is very convenient.~
Stayed here for 3 nights. ||I was having trouble deciding where to stay, but I decided to stay here because it was cheap. ||When you arrive at the hotel, why not upgrade your room? ||It was a few dozen dollars, so I agreed. ||||The upgraded room on the top floor with high ceilings was comfortable. The top floor was like a club floor, and light snacks, soft drinks, and coffee were free. There was also a free PC and printer that connected to the internet. ||||I was worried about the location, but Wellington is a compact city so you can walk anywhere you stay. ||It felt a little far to Cuba Street, but... ||||Most local car rental companies in New Zealand will bring the car to your hotel and you can sign the contract in the hotel lobby. It was easy to get the car out of the parking lot here.
Online booking okay, reception staffed by temporary staff, not very competent;||Entrance with little space to get out, vehicle is parked in the hotel's own parking lot.||Room clean, enough space for three people; clean, especially the bathroom has seen better days.||The location is very close to the center (you can take the lift directly down to the shopping area)
But unfortunately not venerable. The hotel is centrally located, which is also its biggest plus. You take the elevator directly down to the shopping street. Rooms old and worn, wooden furniture partly with open, splintered areas. In the bathroom the shower head was so calcified that the water had difficulty getting through. The terribly squeaky bathroom door made you wide awake even in the middle of the night. Price/performance is not right.
Well located, spacious and well equipped room. However, the bedding is average, the windows are poorly insulated (lets the wind and street noise through), the walls are thin (we could hear the neighbors). Breakfast is good but hot chocolate extra.
The hotel has a nice reception There is a massage and Gym No swimming pool. There is a restaurant and bar and you can get snacks and drinks downstairs. the rooms are neat. Friendly staff, minibar in the room, TV, bath/shower. Close to shops Not far from the train station
Very good city hotel in a best central location. Very nice clean rooms. The valet service takes care of the car. Restaurant was really great. There was really everything you could wish for at the buffet. The view from my room was really cool.
Very spacious rooms with comfortable beds and well equipped. The hotel has parking and the location is very central and also quite close to the boarding area for the South Island with destination Picton.
Excellent hotel in the heart of the city center (an elevator provides direct access to Lambton Quai, one of the busiest streets in Wellington where the cable car is also located). Spacious, quiet room, bathroom with bathtub, free WiFi.
