Reviews of Richmond Guest House
O.
Nice small guest house located close to all major places in the city (walking distance to Te Papa, Cuba street and the Cable car etc)
John the host has a passion for antique things and it definitely adds an atmosphere. Our room was clean and had everything we needed.
Breakfast contained a range of cereals, tosts with butter/jam/peanut butter/chocolate spread/lemon curd and tea/coffee.

I had no issues at all, the room I had was spacious, warm and very clean. I stayed 3 nights and each day my room was serviced including an extra towel daily. The host John was very friendly and helpful, nothing was a problem for him. The service were friendly and willingly shared their local knowledge with me. I will definitely stay here again

Location was idyllic, quiet & close to Mt Victoria reserve. Host John & Ms (sorry missed the name) were polite and accommodating, easy to converse with. The rooms were clean, comfortable with everything you need and the continental breakfast a great touch. Don't be fooled by appearances. I've finally found my regular lodgings for my trips to wellington. Oh! also very cheap!
A.
The host John was welcoming & friendly.
The room was large & clean.
Lovely decor, handy to town.
Nice breakfast & staff.
J.
Comfy beds and really warm rooms with private bathrooms. Relatively cheap for the central location and size of the rooms. Good breakfast options too. The staff are friendly. The only downside is that it's up on a big hill, but exercise right?
M.
A quirky building but delightful. Friendly welcome and amazing staff. Huge choice of cereals for breakfast. Very comfortable. Parking outside. Nothing too much trouble. Central too. Walking distance to Oriental Parade and Te Papa.

We have never stayed in a guest house before, and were pleasantly surprised with our room. Very clean and comfortable, and staff very welcoming. The owner John loves a good story, and good banter, we enjoyed hearing the stories about how the guest house came about, and local history. He really is a wealth of information. You can engage with the staff as much or as little as you want. The continental breakfast in the dining room is included in your price, so why wouldn’t you go and enjoy it? Check out the unique decor in the dining room, we loved it. Yes it is an older property, quite a few of the rooms have been updated/repainted, and the ones I saw in, all looked lovely. Some more suited to cozy couples, others more suited to those who like more space. Just ask when you book. The front stairs were replaced the day we arrived. You know, things happen and things need fixing from time to time, and that is anywhere you stay! We slept really well, we were close to the city Centre, and Uber delivers there! :D If you want 5 star hotel, then go to a 5 star hotel! But I think this guest house with all it’s uniqueness, deserves 5 stars. Thanks to all for a lovely stay - Those 3 Aussies.

John made us feel at home right away. The room was clean and comfortable. Breakfast was just what you'd expect from a B&B and everyone was really kind and attentive. The location is perfect too - right next to the beautiful Mount Victoria Park and not far from many a restaurant, bar, shop and the city center. Thank you for making our stay so enjoyable. Greetings from the German trio.

Stayed here with my mother for a night while visiting government house . Our room was the separate one to the left of the main house, it was very clean and comfortable. We had tea/ coffee and sky TV. The entire house is decorated nicely and has a very colonial feel.
John runs the place and you'll warm to him quickly. He has an excellent sense of hospitality and the breakfast spread he puts on in the morning is a sight to behold. No complaints !
M.
Tucked away in history, is this groovy space where you can time travel. Friendly staff, relaxing room and enjoyable moment on my travels south 👍
J.
We had a lovely big room. Nicely decorated, warm & good beds.
Guest house is handy to town too.
T.
The guest house was as described and it was clean and tidy. The room was neat and bed was comfortable and great with the high pressure hot water shower. As it was late autumn I needed to use the heater to warm the room, but was no trouble …
J.
The Richmond guest House of New Zealand is the best. John Does a very good job at serving breakfast. Stayed their last week. Loved that place. John is a very kind person. Same with the other people who work their. Very comfortable bed, very nice shower. Loved it, thank you all.

Great location, walking distance to Te Papa museum, and mount vic look out.
Room and bathroom were super clean, shower has great water pressure, room has fridge , microwave, jug and TV.
We read some negative reviews about John the host, and wish to clarify that he is kind and caring with a wickedly dry sense of humor!
This humour may be hard for some people to understand due to his inability to show facial expressions (caused by an unfortunate incident). His positive outlook and passion for life are an inspiration!
O.
The property is in midst of renovations so doesn't have any street appeal. Our room was large with ensuite which was recently renovated. TV, tea and coffee facilities and fridge in room. Owner an interesting character and may not be to everyone's liking. John has a dry/sarcastic sense of humor however has a wealth of local knowledge.

Great affordable accommodation really close to town. The rooms don't have any fancy finishings but we were warm and comfortable.

This bed and breakfast has pretty rooms and a very full selection of Vogels cereals for breakfast. The bathroom was compact and the shower had good hot water supply and pressure. Parking is looked after using a dashboard voucher provided on arrival. It is close enough to town to walk to restaurants etc. I found the bed too soft so did not get a good sleep as a result of that.

I had 5 nights at the Richmond as I was in Wellington for work.
I arrived and the owner John was bloody good to me right off the bat, he was warm and welcoming and showed me my room - which was down stairs (they are not underground as per some other review states).
I was thrilled to find it absolutely spotless, with a equally clean bathroom.
As I was there for 5 nights, I used the drawers and wardrobe to hang my shirts and suits and put the rest of my clothes away, so I was able to settle in right away. I didn't have to try and live out of a suitcase for the week so that was great.
The bed was great with an abundance of bed coverings for a warm nights sleep. Sheets were nice to sleep in and they changed my bed after the second night. Fresh towels every day as well.
John was quick to give me my parking permit, I note there is a review that John didn't give him the permit - not sure if that writer asked..... but John was quick off the bat and handed me my one right away. John also offered me the wi-fi password on more than one occasion, he seemed very intent on making my stay as comfortable as it could be.
Now, the most important test... the shower. I was stoked to find that the shower in my room was brilliant!!
Breakfast was toast and cereals, and John served that for me as well.
All in all a very very comfortable stay, I will be using the Richmond again when I am back for work. Handy location, 5 minute walk to Courtney Place, yet quiet enough to get a good nights sleep.
Thanks John.....

Stayed here last night. Lovely greeting. Shown my room which was down stairs. Explained about the key. Then taken upstairs and was showed around. Was then offered a drink and a cup of tea was made. Great touch.
My room - reminded me of my travels around England and Europe - great little guest houses. All the comforts you need. Quirky in lots of respects.
My room was down stairs - room 7. No complaints. The bed did what it was suppose to do. The shower - great pressure better than my current house.
My room had two sets of windows in the bed area, two heaters - panel and a column heater. A desk and chair, hair dryer, clock radio, bed side lamp and a dimmer knob for the main bedroom. It was clean, tidy, no dust. No odd smells. The bathroom ensuite was very large. Larger than some hotels. And it was a shade of rose and pink.
I was under the lounge upstairs and occasionally heard creaking floor boards. This was not an issue. Outside noise was minimal other than walking youngsters.
There was the days paper on the bed. Another nice touch.
This room was all I needed. And would definitely stay here again.
I did not stay for breakfast - checked out at 6am but was offered to take something to my room which I declined on arrival.
The dining area was a reasonable size with four dining tables. Various style of ornaments, and cut out pictures of Wellington past in frames was a good touch for people that like to see the past. Also some nice pictures of Dorset in England. I believe you could help yourself to tea and coffee.
I was not aware of an internal stair case to get upstairs - so rain and cold weather - dash quickly upstairs.
WIFI is available.
Good position to town - walking distance.
Thanks for a great night.

This is a good place for business people to stay, if they wish to be in a quiet homely environment - close to the city.
I stayed at the Richmond Guest House a few years ago now. It was my father's place of choice when staying in Wellington. I maintain contact with John until this day. He is a wonderful character and the renovations taking place are coming along nicely.
D.
We called the Richmond Guest House our home for quite a while after we moved to New Zealand. John, the proprietor, is a class act and welcomed us graciously. The room was lovely, the bed was comfortable and nothing beats John's breakfast spread. We plan on keep in touch with John and can't wait to see what his newly remodeled rooms look like.
W.
Room was very hot and was small. Toilet cistern has a drip and needs attention. Owner appears to have a chip on his shoulder and doesn't like Aussies (I will admit some are horrible - but so are many other people's). I love Wellington, but would doubt I'd be looking to stay here again if I return.
B.
We were looking for a convenient location in Wellington off the main streets and were fortunate to find the Richmond Guest House. John was very helpful with directions around town. His location adjacent to Mt Victoria neighborhood had easy access to food options and major attractions like Te Papa. He continues to restore his historical home in a neighborhood of 100 yr old homes. The room we stayed in was nicely restored with pleasing touches and attention to details. I enjoyed his quirky sense of humor and listening to his cool old radio during breakfast,

Just reminiscing about our wonderful time in Wellington 2 years ago and staying at the lovely Richmond Guest house. The host (John) was very welcoming and very helpful when we required information about wellington.
Lovely clean room. Unique place to stay in an excellent location to explore Wellington.
Would recommend and stay again if ever back in NZ.
Thanks John
M.
For a bed and breakfast feel a pretty good place. Room was clean and fresh towels daily. Breakfast was cereal or toast. Great place if you spend the days exploring Wellington. Nice central location to come back to
B.
Great place to stay, comfortable beds, clean rooms with ensuite bathroom, very quiet during the nights and only a short walk from the city centre. The owner enjoys a chat and is very helpful. Notable are an unmatched collection of porcelain figurines in every corner of the guesthouse ensuring every culture feels a bit at home (Napoleon, Chinese wise men, Rome's Trevi fountain etc.). Definitely recommend a stay, if only for the great atmosphere and fair price.
K.
Centrally located, with several places to shop and eat within walking distance. The owner, John, is warm and welcoming; with useful insights about the locale. The rooms are small, but clean and comfortable. Very good value for money!
M.

It's a few years now since I've stayed, but I stayed there often when I was on business, coming across from Melbourne. Nice and close to the airport, nothing flash but perfectly comfortable. I'll be more than happy to stay there again on future visits, and to catch up with the host, John

(Translated) Very nice home. The rooms are small, comfortable, clean. The feeling of being in the last century is historical, like in a museum, only you still live here. Spacious dining room, breakfast - breakfast cereals and toasts. Everywhere is warm. Near the center. Parking is free - the owner gives permission to park on the street.
