Stayed here for many months while working in town (mostly living in our van, but 1 week in a dorm room also - both arrangements were good). Welcoming friendly owner and his family, always happy to help if you need. Free hot showers, wifi (although can get busy so not always great), use of a well equipped kitchen, super comfy sofas and front room, dining room, outside courtyard as well as use of the garden which has seating too. He kept the fire lit throughout winter which was super lovely and warm. Overall would 100% reccomend, really loved our time there, felt homely. Its close to town, good price, near shops. We will be back one day I hope. Thank you! :) :)

I love how cozy and welcoming this place is! The owner and staff made it feel like I was visiting friends rather than staying in a backpackers. It was also very clean and well kept. It was a bit quiet when I was there but if you are looking for a comfortable place to relax it’s perfect! And major bonus points for the dog!!!

There was only one wall plug in the room for 5 people to share. It had a short extension cable so multiple devices could be charged but still you have to charge your stuff in the same corner as everyone else, other rooms could be different. Everyone here seemed very friendly, we only stayed for one night so didn't get to socialise much but it seemed like a great crowd. My bed was fine but my friend said his was so lumpy and his pillow was so thin he chose to go and sleep in my camper van in the parking lot instead of the bed in the hostel. Facilities are good, the place is clean and cosy.

Cosy, comfy and welcoming. Close to the river, local park and loads of local shops and restaurants/takeaways. The centre of town isn't too far away. Best of all, though, is the laid back feel to the place. It isn't super new or spotless, but it is very comfortable and felt to me like a home away from home. Lots of books, games and DVDs if you need extra ways to pass the time.

It's not a 5 stars hostel, but it's the most friendly place where i've been in Whakatane. The manager is very nice, there is two bathroom, a large lounge with sofas, tv and DVD player, a large kitchen and illimited Wi-Fi. A big table outside where you could share good moments with friends or other travellers.

Brilliant time here! We are kiwis hiking the north island and Keith (owner) has a lovely spot to put up your tent with use of all the amenities (shower and kitchen were a blessing!). Keith is very kind and caring going out of his way to help all his visitors including giving people rides to town (not sure what the post below is about... he is not crazy or stingy at all, unless kindness is crazy!) All visitors tidy and friendly, we really enjoyed our stay here and would recommend to anyone.

Such warming place with warming people (and pets) living inside! We really appreciate the wood stove, the bigs sofa in the common area and our very comfortable queen size bed ( 2 small = 1 very large) in the double room. (Translated) I was there for 4 weeks. In the beginning it was not so nice, because it has come down quite well. At some point I did not take that anymore and then it was very comfortable. The hostel owner is super nice and even gave us money back as we left early. Generally it is very informal there, since you know everyone there after a week at the latest. Most backpackers are there to work so they all stay a bit longer so you can get to know new people. (Original) Ich war 4 Wochen dort. Zum Anfang war es nicht so schön, weil es doch recht runtergekommen ist. Irgendwann hab ich das aber nicht mehr war genommen und dann war es sehr gemütlich. Der Hostel Besitzer ist super nett und hat uns sogar Geld zurück gegeben, da wir vorzeitig abgereist sind. Allgemein ist es sehr familiär dort, da man spätestens nach einer Woche alle dort kennt. Die meisten Backpacker sind dort zum arbeiten also bleiben alle ein bisschen länger und man kann somit gut neue Leute kennenlernen.
