G.Good value for money and location is a 10 minute walk to main part of town. Dorm rooms and kitchen are a bit tired but do the job, no lockers and dorm room door was open all day. Some helpful advice from the owners about nearby walks. Seem to be several people staying there long term which kills the vibe a bit for backpacking. Nice common areas inside and out. Clean bathrooms
A.This is a really great hostel. The owner, Steve, was very accommodating. He took us for a drive around the area so we could look at all the beautiful scenery and he told us about the area. Honestly one of my best hostel experiences, so far.
The beds are comfortable and you can have as many blankets as you want, all freshly cleaned, unlike many other hostels. Additionally, tea and coffee is free, as are the herbs and spices for cooking.
D.Really good place to stay. Whakatane doesn't have a lot of options, but this place seemed like the best balance of location and cost. The kitchen is smaller than most hostel in NZ but there are less people. It is set up for longer term resident, but is very accommodating to backpackers. The admin people are very relaxed. One thing to know is the charge 5% on credit cards so find an ATM near the center of town (10 min walk). There is also parking and nicer more expensive single units available for people who don't want a dorm setting.
