Reviews of Tūpare
A beautiful garden in all seasons. Summers burst with colours n flowers Autumn paints it red green & gold .
Just always such a pleasure to go sit breathe relax for an hour to maybe more should one want to read a while in such a serene place..
My husband and I really loved and enjoyed this beautiful property. Majestic and so wonderfully looked after by three staff we heard. We had a great wander around the sublime designs, which leads you onto the next pocket of wonder. We are going to go back and have a quiet relaxed special picnic there. Thank you so much for being open to everyone and free. Appreciated so much.
Beautiful garden with free access - but a very steep climb if you want to see the best of it.
absolutely stunning!! there's so much variety of species, so much wildlife and water features. the Victorian houses make it so aesthetically pleasing too. would be an awesome place for picnics, will definitely be visiting again!
Tupare Gardens is one of Taranaki's best locations. If you want to go for a stroll, have a picnic or admire some gardens, this is the place to go. Stunning no matter what time of year it is. So many tracks to explore and places to sit and enjoy the view! I always recommend Tupare to any out of town friends. The gardeners do a fantastic job of keeping it all looking perfect. Quite a steep hill so any small children or elder may struggle but you can go as far down as you feel comfortable, plenty to see on the way.
Both delightful and spectacular gardens to visit ~ but be prepared and wear good, comfortable walking shoes. The gardens encompass quite a large area and mostly on hillside, with various pathways leading down to different aspects of the gardens and to the Tupare River flowing below. Remember, you have to walk back to the top where the entrance and exit is located. Take a small backpack with a bottle of water and a snack if you want to spend time there.
There are a number of carparks available at the entrance, and entry is free.
At the moment (late January), there are a number of flowers in Bloom, and on a sunny day its refreshing to see the river below. There ars lots of nicely shaded areas, and lovely views to behold.
One of our favourite gardens to visit. Lovely rural, English country feel with flowing paths that are bordered by a well designed blend of plants. Mass plantings of bulbs pop up in the meadow around large established trees.
This place is a GEM! You really should stop by if you're around. The park is stunning and the gardeners do an amazing job maintaining it. Really nice to learn about the family who lived there before.
You can also visit the house with a guide, and there are barbecues in the lower part of the park by the river.
Loved the house and gardens. The gardens were beautifully cared for and so lush. We had a very informative fun tour through the house.
A beautiful spot for a family picnic!
This was my favourite stop of our holiday. Tūpare is gorgeous! We trekked down to the river flat to use the free bbq area for dinner. Beautiful tracks, gorgeous garden, lush grass and the sound of the birds and the river.
So relaxing enjoying the peace and beauty of this spot, while the kiddos played hide and seek in the long grass! They even discovered a swing!
Cutest wharepaku (toilet) ever tucked among the hydrangeas. There are plaques here and there explaining some of the history of the gardens and plenty of spaces to picnic. There were swimmers enjoying the river (next time we'll bring togs) and some keen beans using the tennis courts.
The house is open for tours at specific times, so if you are wanting to check it out, be sure to check the times. The gardens are open all day every day though and there are maps at the entrance to help you find your way.
We look forward to returning here for a longer length of time!
Beautiful gardens and Chapman Taylor arts and craft house. Stunning planting, paths, ponds, peaceful garden rooms....take your time and wander down to the river fields and bbq / picnic areas. Be warned the garden is on the side of a gentle hill which means a steep walk back to the car - but it's worth it! Wonderful!
Fantastic wee place, worth a dedicated visit :)
Lovely this public garden for a walk on the sunshine. It's a great spot for taking some photos of the beautiful flowers and scenery
Tupare, which means 'garland of flowers', has a number of special features, including the glade, glasshouse, old orchard and cliff cascade. You can see the snow-dusted peak of Taranaki Maunga, one of the North Island's highest mountains, from many parts of the garden.
Tupare is owned and managed by the Taranaki Regional Council on behalf of the people of the region. It is open all day, every day and entry is free.
The garden is on Mangorei Rd, near the intersection with State Highway 3. It is open daily and is free to visit.
Tūpare is an enchanting masterpiece of horticultural artistry and historical significance nestled along the banks of the Waiwhakaiho River. Steeped in the legacy of Sir Russell Matthews and his family, who meticulously crafted this garden from 1932, it stands today as a tribute to their vision and passion.
Recently awarded the prestigious NZ Gardens Trust highest six-star rating, Tūpare stands among a select few, a recognition of its unrivalled beauty and meticulous preservation of its heritage. The garden's landscape, sculpted into the hillside, is a testament to its commitment to authenticity. Stately trees, including majestic deciduous maples, copper beeches and dawn redwoods, grace the winding paths, while a stunning array of rhododendrons, azaleas, and hydrangeas paint the canvas in vibrant hues.
The river flat area is a pastoral retreat, where the gentle sway of specimen trees harmonises with the melody of wind and water. Here, under the open sky, visitors can partake in leisurely picnics and savour the convenience of free gas barbecues. The proximity to the Waiwhakaiho River offers an inviting opportunity for a refreshing summer swim.
The diverse array of flora in Tūpare thrives in the benevolent embrace of Taranaki's climate and sheltered surroundings. Towering coniferous sentinels like dawn redwoods and kauri provide a majestic framework. They are joined by the grace of deciduous wonders like dove trees, tulip trees and liquidambars, painting the garden in a riot of autumnal splendour. Maples, magnolias, rhododendrons, camellias, azaleas and hydrangeas form a harmonious tapestry, complemented by the charming presence of cottage garden plants and spring bulbs.
Tūpare, now under the stewardship of the Taranaki Regional Council, is not just a garden; it's a living testament to a family's love for nature and a community's dedication to preserving a botanical treasure. Every step through Tūpare's winding paths is a journey through time and a celebration of the enduring beauty of the natural world.
