One of the best hostels I’ve ever stayed in! Great crew & awesome location. Owners, Ray & Steve are the best! You’ll always stay longer than expected in Westport because this hostel has such good vibes & great music. Thanks team. See you next time!

Everyone is welcoming. Ray and the team are really cool to hangout with and make the experience worth while. Will definitely be back. WALK DISTANCE TO THE SHOPS AS WELL ! They offer surf lessons too so any keen surfer or beginner can have a blast.

surfing lesson for the two children aged 11 and 17, Steve was the instructor. Both had a really cool time and would strongly recommend. wetsuit and surfboard.are supplied andquickshowerto wash off the salt afterwards. by the end of the session both kids were were standing up so very very happy and were smiling all over the place. The beach was shallow so very friendly for learners. come and do this and have lots of fun.

Great hostel! The woofers had questionable jumper choices but it added to the charm and they were very friendly. Really homely vibes and the owner made us feel very welcome. Definitely THE place to stay in Westport.

Love this place! Came as a guest, left as a family member! The staff is super friendly and make you feel absolutely welcome! You can get to surf daily if you like and everything you need for a surf session is available! Great atmosphere because of all the artwork too! Definitely highly recommend to stay here! :-)

A cozy, clean hostel with such chill vibes. I would 100% recommend staying here. The staff are friendly and helpful. You’ll feel at home from the moment you arrive and not want to leave. I had such a lovely experience and it’s an amazing place to stay.

Came here for two nights and enjoyed every minute of it! Staff were so welcoming and helpful - lent us bikes for such a reasonable rate and with everything else they were so genuine and lovely. Pizza also delicious and garlic bread best I’ve had all year .

AMAZING!!! The people are so friendly and very helpful. Great atmosphere in the Hostel. The surfschool is really well organized and the crew will give you lots of tips&trics to make you feel confident on the board, thank you so much!!! When I come back to New Zealand I’ll definitely stay there again.

Great place to stay in Westport. Very friendly welcoming and helpful. Make sure you try their surfing lessons and hire a bike from them to go around town. And don't forget to try those delicious pizzas made by the fantastic owners of the hostel!

Sensational hostel. Clean and friendly and what a surprise Westport was! So much to do and the awesome staff had me covered, never surfed before and after 1 lesson I feel like Kelly Slater. Great mountain biking around the town and theyve got the bikes and the info you need at reception, skate park across the road and free skateboards.... Can't fault this place. Best of all, the pizza each night!

Easily the best hostel I've stayed at on the south island! Chill atmosphere with even chiller people. The pizza was awesome and the surf lesson is really helpful! The kitchens and bathrooms were well equipped and tidy as was my bedroom. Overall, this hostel turned out to be a perfect place to stop after seeing the scenic Great Coast Road!

Perfect place for shelter for sea & mountain lovers. Near by bike trails that can be walked towards the beach & mountains. Near by sea where waves can be seen. Cozy fireplace surrounded by decorative art work. Dorms well heated up & clean. Wide kitchen with heaps of cooking equipment. Perfect place for backpacker who love adventures & good place for tourist as well. Hence, some saying semi-bad reviews. 5 nights get a free surfing lesson. Stay 3 nights get 4th night free. Talk is cheap, just see for yourselves how epic this backpackers paradise is.

What an amazing place to be! There's unique arts everywhere. Friendly loving staff provides love and hugs when you needed. Great crew to surf with AND EVEN WITH DOLPHINS!!! I was there for a month,every single day i feel full of joy and love! and i finally learn how to surf after dream for five years. Highly recommend!

Highly recommend a stay at Bazil's if passing through Westport! It has such a friendly, welcoming, chill vibe, with lots of cool little areas to hang out. Ray and Steve the owners are both awesome and full of ideas for fun things to do in the area - namely surfing! I'd love to go back!

Amazing place with amazing owners and staff! The French girl at the front desk was so welcoming! The hostel itself is clean and the art everywhere gives it a chilled out, lively vibe. Tons of surfing beaches nearby, mountain bike tracks, hikes, and you can rent all the gear you need from the hostel. There is also a pizza oven which you can order delicious pizza from. The kitchens are well equipped. Definitely a worthwhile stop on the South Island!

Really recommend this hostel. If you want to surf you can have a deal for a board and a wetsuit. Good vibes , good kitchen , everyone is friendly there. Ray and Steve are nice

Great hostel and fun atmosphere! Very clean and lots of space to chillout after going for a surf at their surf school. The staff is super friendly and they really go out of their way to accommodate any of your needs. 10/10 would stay again!

Awesome spot if you want to chill out. Everyone is friendly there and facilities are as good as it gets in a hostel. I had a room to myself for a week for $25/night.. Someone always up for a surf or a movie in front of the fire.. And a bangin chipper only about 100m away

I had the most Amazing experience staying here! As soon as I walked into this place, I knew I had stumbled across a hidden treasure! The hospitality was amazing and it’s a place we will never forget! I’ve told all my friends about our experience here and I can’t wait to bring them back one day! Ray was so helpful and amazing, and we were blessed to meet him! This place was awesome! Came here with Kiwi Ex, loved the vibe of the hostel (& plastic bag free was pretty damn cool). Two kitchens and shower/bathroom areas. Gym literally next door, $6 for 24 hours, and the gym is amazing, one of the best we've seen while travelling! Would definitely recommend this hostel, and happily stay again!

Think this might just be the funkiest place in town! ... Our room was clean, comfortable, cheap, the deco is very cool! And the staff are super freindly, ... Wiked vibe all round 😎🤙

Very cool, quirky, hostel that provides all that a hostel should. Don't get lost in the eclectic array of buildings - but if you do make sure to look at all the murals painted on every inch of the building. Plenty of outdoor space to spend time in and an awesome fireplace indoors (I spent most of my time there). The staff allowed me to pitch my tent in their courtyard which was super awesome. For $15 a night I had full access to all the facilities. The hostel is pretty quiet during the winter, I was only one of a handful of guests, but every second night a Kiwi experience bus will arrive with 30-40 people, however they arrive in the evening and leave in the morning so I guess it isnt that bad.

Awesome hostel -- really appreciate the vibes and service from Ray and Steve. The hostel is full of lots of cool places to hang out. Will definitely be going back there soon. I can't recommend it enough.

On my way South I decided to stay in Westport. I had not been in a hostel for 20 years but decided to do it again. The first hostel I visited had terrible staff and I decided to fill up my gas and pass on when the guy at the gas station mentioned Bazil’s. So I decided to return and that was quite a difference. Nice place, friendly welcoming staff and parking availability. And they still had a nice double room in the front. Although the kitchen was already closed, the receptionist asked whether I was hungry and offered to make me a pizza. There were a lot of other people around, all chatting and being very welcoming to newbies. Young and old (me 😉) from all over the world. I could still join a surfing class for the next day and the entire atmosphere was very relaxed. Unfortunately I got a call from home and had to reschedule but the refund of the surfing class was no problem. The place was quiet at night so I had a good night sleep. There are cameras (freeloaders are not welcome) and your stuff is safe.You also get a code that you have to use to get inside. Showers had enough water pressure, and everything was clean. The next morning I prepared breakfast and all kitchen utensils are available. (As long as you clean them afterwards.) The Kiwi experience stoppes here as well and if you stay five nights or more, you get a free surfing lesson including all equipment, transport etc. (NZ$75) so quite a few people we’re doing this. And if you want to work there, staff is always wanted. Just drop them an email. So in the meantime you can learn to surf and meet lots of new people. I liked the place and the vibe out there and I can imagine a lot of you will like it as well. When my children are going to NZ in probably two years time, the will definitely enjoy this place and the Kiwi way of life!

Me and my friends had booked accommodation at YHA in town, but as soon as I felt the vibes of this place I regretted not staying here instead. The staff is super friendly and makes this place special. I did a surfing lesson in the evening and hired equipment for the next day - one of the best experiences I have had during five months in New Zealand. It is worth coming to Westport just for this place!

Cool vibes and eco friendly. Beds kinda uncomfortable. Good WiFi! Decent kitchens, well stocked. Went surfing with Anna, she was really nice and very helpful, the beach was lovely with good waves. Decent price for pizzas :) cool people that work here as well

Great place with great people! Everyone is pretty chill and friendly. The whole environment iof the hostel is pretty cool the way that it is set up with all the indoor and outdoor areas. Very clean and a great place to stay if you want to go surfing.

Ash was a lovely smiling face greeting us at the reception to a really cute hostel! Really liked the 'come up with a deal and we'll see if we like it' concept. Prettiest sunsets out, which we appreciated while borrowing the owner's longboards around town (for free! Honestly made our day). Dorm rooms were a little bit warm during the summer with all beds occupied, but was definitely our fav hostel during our South Island trip. Cheers!

If you are planning on going to the west coast this is def the place to stay! Great hostel with very friendly people who wanna make your stay well worth. Hang around for more than a day so you can find out what the area has to offer you. Mainly because of this hostel my stay at the west coast was as great as it was. Couldn’t have done the Old Ghost Road without em that’s for one! Thanks for all help and fun guys! Cheers Jochem

Love this place! Super chilled vibes and surf pumps! Waves everyday, with good boards for hire and great lessons with fun instructors. So many things going on there, bikes, kayaks, paddle boarding and loads of beautiful walks around town. The guys that run the place are legends that have made a unique spot come alive! (And the free WiFi is good too ;))

definitely the best place I could stay on the south island. I thought of leaving the place quickly but I can not get away! beautiful, peaceful, the atmosphere is great, the pizzas are even more! great waves, many places to visit as well, Westport and Bazils are my favorite of this island of the south! I will come back for sure!

My favourite place in New Zealand, I didn’t want to leave! After traveling solo through the west coast, I met up with a friend and we painted a mural for our accommodation. Was only there for a few nights and it was not long enough; loved the art, the vibe, the staff, the people - it’s a perfectly chilled surf hangout. I didn’t have time to hit the waves but sounded like everyone who did had a great time. There’s a skatepark across the road, excellent yoga classes, gym up the street, fantastic fresh pizzas and a cat. What more do you need?

Had a great time in Bazil's ! The staff is very friendly and will help you as good as they can. The hostel has 2 big kitchen with good equipment and free stuff as coffee and tea. It's a great place to chill out, there's a big tv room and a lounge outside. If you wanna do something more sportive you can hire surfboards for a very good price as well. Looking forward to my next stay!

Actually a really nice hostile with cool vibes. I really enjoyed commend the 10$ pizzas they serve, delicious! They also arranged a sweet bonfire on the beach. For those interested they offer surf classes in the mornings and general exercises in the evenings what I understood. Cool surroundings with the mountains and the beach, and a great supermarket close by.

What a groovy Hostel. Location is great, close to shops and amenities. Surf lessons are brilliant, mountain bike around a decent trial track to the beach. Paddle board down a river and take in the calm surroundings.. Really welcoming staff, some rad vibes! The showers work and they're hot!!!

Love this place! It's a cozy hostel with beautiful murals and a laid back surfer vibe. The owners are super friendly and welcoming! Be sure to get their pizza one night (so delicious) and the back packers special at the Denniston Dog Cafe. They even offer fitness classes--definitely stay here!!

5 STARS! Would have given it more if I could! Can't recommend enough Of the six Kiwi hostels I stayed at this was the best one. I just just felt that it represents everything backpacking stands for. There's an adorable vibe to it which you just can't help but love. I ran into a Discover New Zealand tour bus while there and made lots of friends. It's just a really sociable place, and that more than makes up for the slightly small kitchen area, and fairly basic shower rooms. I was told before going to Westport that I wouldn't want to stay for long as there was nothing to do there, but I actually wanted to stay longer and would have done if I'd had the time. Staff at the hostel are very friendly and were very helpful in assisting me getting my mobile phone back after losing it on the coach (!). I'd love to go back

Bazils has a very warm and welcoming environment. I came here as a solo traveler and very quickly made friends with the other guests - an unusual occurrence for me. The living room was super cozy in the dead of winter and people are always hanging out in the living room by the fire. The hostel is very close to the beach and people are very keen to surf/help out beginners like me. Also, there is a gym next door that is cheap and you don't need a membership. It's got a squat rack, bench press, plenty of free weights, and a boxing ring. Every other night they sell pizza which is super dank. There are a bunch of cool paintings hanging everywhere and I never had any trouble with the wifi. If you're in Westport you gotta come here.

Lovely hostel with a relaxed atmosphere and beautiful decor. I've been wwoofing here for a few days now; the bosses and coworkers are great company and the nearby beaches are amazing for surfing. On rainy days the lounge is perfect for watching a movie or simply sitting by the fireplace. The only negative are the kiwi busses that regularly stop at this place. However they usually quiet down once they settle into the sofas in the lounge. On the whole: I'm enjoying my time here a lot :)

Bazil's Hostel is just great. Its unique atmosphere with a nice and cozy lounge with a fire and TV, a great kitchen and a lot of awesome pictures makes you feel just comfortable. The receptionist is a really funny guy. I did a Surf lesson too and it was also amazing! It was quite fun and informative and the beach was just gorgeous.

This place is rad. Wicked chill, laid back environment. Bike rentals to explore the mtn bike trails in the area and some of the friendliest staff around. Definitely partake in the pizza night here, they have their own hearth and it was delicious!

Great hostel, quite at the moment due to winter but it's obvious this place rocks in the warm. Pizza oven out the side, plenty of room for humans to hang out.

The place has a really good vibe to it. Everyone is backpacker here, it's the best budget accomodation in town I guess. The staff is really friendly, the beds are clean and the rooms well maintained. There's also a lot of space outside to chill and socialize (with hammocks!!). And they have guitars😋

Welcoming and friendly hostel with a great location to the the town and beach. The staff were very friendly and made for an enjoyable visit. The amenities were in great condition and the place was clean. The hostel has a very friendly atmosphere which ensures for a pleasant stay.

I loved learning to surf with Bazils hostel and surf school. It was my first time ever. The trainers are amazing, warm and inviting. They teach with so much passion and make it alot of fun. I stayed here for a whole 2 months because of how incredible this place is. Westport is a quiet town but Bazil's gives you plenty to do, surfing, mountain biking, paddle boarding down the buller river. the people are super friendly and the hostel always has the coolest people to chill with

Very nice place for surfers. The hosts and the woofers are very nice and the surf teacher is very good ! The place where we went is perfect for learning because the waves are very long and not too high. The place is perfect to stay for woofing. The only problem is the kiwi bus...

Quality Staff & Room, friendly and spacious atmosphere, clean. Would definitely recommend one of the nicest hostels I've ever stayed in.

We rented surfboards and wetsuits for half a day for $40 (for both), with gear return by 9 pm at the latest. The staff was very helpful with everything, including gear selection, and fitting all of the gear onto the car. Paper work was minimal, but we were asked to leave one passport as a form of safety deposit. I'd happily rent from here again.

Basil's Surf Backpackers is an awesome, amazing place to stay and you feel so welcome, I feel incredibly blessed to have stayed. Rae thank so much!

Best hostel evahhhhh. Arrive as a stranger, leave as family. You might think your only passing through... But watch out, because you'll end up here for a month or more. So many beautiful people welcome you with open arms and everyone is keen on an adventure. Whether it be Surfing at the many beach breaks, Stand up paddle boarding down the local river, Mt biking round the coastal trails, or sweating it out at the gym right next door. The owners are just a couple of blocks who love life and love sharing the excitement of the west coast with every visitor who walks through the door. Boom, you rock Bazils Hostel 🤘🏼

Clean, with very friendly people running it plus awesome pizza! Bit annoying with the insistence on cash deposits for key cards when we could just hand in ID, but no big deal. I like the no drinking rule past 9pm but it could probably be a bit later... Recommend though if you are visiting Westport.

Great Hostel! Had a surf lesson in the morning and it was just awesome! Although i really suck at surfing it was a great experience to be on the water and watch the sunrise! Our Surfinstructor Steve was really helpful and patient with us. He gave us a good understanding of surfing with background information and a comprehensive "how-to-surf"-lesson. 5 Stars for Bazils!

Really nice place! I slept in my van in the carpark and i use the facilities which was pretty cool. The designs and all its beautifull. And you should go surfing! Amazing beach for beginners and more. 😘

This is a really cool place with really good vibes. the art work is amazing. They even give a deal where you can stay and do art for free. It fully shows the new Zealand culture and is one of those places that you just shouldn't miss.

Great Hostel, realy nice garden and amazing rooms. I've stayed in the big room called the unit, is the best 10 bed dorm room i've ever been. You get your own kitchen, your own tv and dvd-player and also a cosy fire place. The guys who own the place are really helpfull and cool guys. I get a surf lesson and learned really fast to surf and the instructor was always looking after me.

There is art everywhere in the hostal, its so good. Clean and tidy, good location, and big and well equipped kitchens. cant ask anything else ;)

I spend few days at bazil's, it was a great experience. The hostel is beautifull with lot of art, staff was <br/>nice and friendly. <br/>I spend my week to surf, and i came back, went hicking and moutain biking, it was really worth it.<br/>Definitly i recommand this place in westport.<br/>Thank you bazils :)

Awesome hostel. Really clean, comfortable. Surf hire and transport on offer, good local surfing. Very friendly staff and comfortable lounge area with fireplace and tv.

If you dont mind sharing a room with other people (if you do; what are you doing in a hostel??!) this is the place to be. You have big rooms with on one side all the beds and on the other side a tv and sone nice chairs and in some rooms even your private kitchen. The hostel looks amazing with art everywhere and for guest whobhave 10 nzd laying around you could get a pizza (from a stone oven!) freshly made and baked!

Great hostel, nice garden, but very shitty surf lessons. Newbies werent allowed in the big waves, so it was pretty boring. Teacher dissapered in to big waves, so at least he had fun. Five stars for the hostel, zero for the surf lessons.

One of the best hostels in New Zealand by far! Friendly staff, clean rooms, and the surf is gnarly! I strongly suggest staying here a couple of nights to see a true gem of New Zealand

This was so amazing everyone! We were so grateful for this place! We were so lucky to have been given a room by this place! We praise God for Ray and his kindness!!

It's a nice place in terms of facilities and decent wifi. But gets very busy and crowded. Not great for campers, but you can make it work. They just have you park in a very crowded parking lot off the street. More of a hostel.

Awesome Hostel with friendly staff. Doesn't matter if you want to go surfing, skating, having a workout, exploring the West Coast or just need a bed for the night, bazil's got your back! A paradise for psychedelic art lovers. There's no single wall without any painting! If you're not able to motivate your lazy ass for a workout you should go to Max's boot camp sessions! Tom will take you for a surf lesson/hire to the beautiful Tauranga Bay. And if you want a personalised souvenir come and see Fanny. She will plait you a wunderful bracelet. Enjoy your stay and don't even think about bringing a plastic bag to the hostel!

Wow what a spot spent three weeks in westport surfing everyday at Bazils Hostel. These guys really know there stuff and the instructor Tom was super easy to get along with and really helpful in teaching me how to surf. Definitely recommend getting a pizza after surfing can be pretty hard work 🍕🏄

Such a cool unique hostel, staff were lovely, pizza was yum would 100% come again ! Loved it.

Only rent some surfboards there, really satisfied! Price 40$ for All day Surfing with wet suits and if you need attachment for the Boards, no problem :)

that's a nice place, they have rice cooker that I was so surprised, nice lounge and public kitchen, unlimited free wifi! but laundry is a bit far from backpacker...4 min on foot lol!

Rooms are extremely small and can't be locked from outside. Did not feel safe leaving the building with my items inside

I don't think they checked room before handing over he key. Washroom wasn't cleaned and there were no shower gels or soaps.
