Reviews of Chard Farm
D.
Our group came to Chard Farm on a quite gloomy day, the view over the gorge still look spectacular though.
We were hosted by Jessie who is so knowledgeable, friendly and nice! She speaks fluently in Mandarin, Cantonese which are surely a bonus point to some of my Chinese friends. Great wine and even better stories! Looking forward to be back here next time we are in Queenstown!
S.
A beautiful winery grounds along a small dirt road which is actually the historical access road for Queenstown!
Wonderful wine, great sommelier service and incredible views of the valley
L.
Pauline was the most incredible host - Chard Farm was the highlight of the 5 wineries we visited. Their 2019 Closeburn Chardonnay is sensational - definitely not your standard Chardonnay
S.
Chard Farm ticks every box - great wine, great location and superb staff.
Getting here is half the fun, the drive along the narrow gravel road hugs the edge of the cliff at times and gives spectacular views back to the AJ Hackett Bungee Centre, or once you round the corner, down the Kawarau River valley to the winery.
You'll notice a number of people stopping here just for photos as this is also a Lord of the Rings Film Location (PIllars of the Kings).
The Winery is set in a lovely old building in a lovely setting and parking is right out the door.
Uniquely, Chard Farm does not charge a tasting fee, but instead asks for donations to a local hospice. (During our visit they were instead collecting for Australian bushfire relief, a lovely touch),
The wine tasting experience is superb - personal, friendly and knowledgable, and the wines, especially the pinots and chardonnays were among the best we've tasted in NZ (we freighted a case back to Australia).
A must do if you're in the region and want to taste wine. Great wine, a lovely drive in, and wonderful people behind the counter.
C.
Beautiful vineyard with great history attached to it! The narrow, winding road on the cliffside leading to the main vineyard area is the original road into Queenstown according to the in-house sommelier. All in all, a very cool place with delicious wines! (Just be careful driving on the narrow, winding road)
L.
Getting there is half the adventure!!! Chard road, that leads to the winery, is both spectacular and adrenaline pumping with its windy turns and astonishing views that are true to the core of NZ. This is a true gem. The tasting area is simple but functional and pays great homage to the biking souls with its great person on bike work of art in the main yard. The bathrooms are cleverly named to pay homage to the raging waters along its shores. The wine tasting if FREE and you get the feel that this small but great vineyard is special. There were two houses on the property that look as though they belong to the family. Given its astonishing locations it would be amazing if you could stay there but growing too big might also come at a cost. This is a must do on your wine tour!
G.
Jessie was incredible, she had a wealth of knowledge and was extremely engaging and personable. Her humour was the highlight of the tasting. Ended up buying the wine she recommended, very unique refreshing Pinot Noir ❤️ We will be back again
J.
A cosy and lovely place to taste some of the most exotic wine produced in Otago! The drive up was a little tricky because it's all one lane but we were glad we dropped by to see this place for ourselves. To top it off, we got a bottle of Mason Pinot Noir 2016 which we will open it 5 years from now to celebrate our anniversary. Worth noting wine tasting is complementary but you can choose to donate if you decide not to buy any bottle (which I will strongly advise again).
J.
This place has probably one of the most beautiful views in Queenstown and our host John was one of the most knowledgeable and pleasant wine hosts that I've ever met. The warm ambience, beautiful views and tasty wine makes this place a must visit for anyone hoping to learn more about the regions rich wine history.
S.
Pauline the duty manager was fantastic. She gave us a great selection of wines at the wine tasting, really interesting background information, hilarious stories and gave us some awesome suggestions for the rest of our Queenstown trip.
K.
Beautiful vineyard located across from the main highway. The road to arrive is a bit narrow but you pass one of the Lord of the Rings film sites. The tasting room offered a chance to sample a few of their wines before making a purchase. Super helpful and friendly staff on site.
B.
An absolute pleasure to visit each time (we're up to three across seven or so years). We are always looked after by the staff at the cellar door, tasting some lovely wines, enjoying the view (and the drive in). It is one of the closer wineries to Queenstown, so is definitely worth visiting. The Pinots, in particular, are fantastic and cellar very well.
B.
Very nice Vineyard. To reach this vineyard, you need to go through the rough road along the cliff, which is a kind of thrilling, It is worth visiting if you would like to go to unique vineyard.
M.
Great wines (I hope we could have taken more overseas!!), beautiful property and very nice staff. We felt very welcomed and were treated very well.
We had the chance to do a proper wine tasting, without the rush and impersonal approach of overly comercial wineries. Definitely recommend to visit if you want a very nice local wine.
r.
Delicious wines! Fiona was very down to earth and friendly as she explained what we were tasting. We ended up ordering a dozen.
There is a 2km single lane gravel road in, but if you've driven up to the Remarkables then this one is easy.
S.
We did a wine tasting which was free as we bought 2 bottles of wine, every glass we tried was absolutely delightful and the lady serving us was friendly, informative and pleasant. Plus the driveway there was exciting!!
C.
Great experience with lovely wine. They ship anywhere free of charge if you buy 6 bottles which was very easy to do.
K.
This place is a very cute vineyard, with a steady stream of visitors, including regulars, throughout the day. They let you have six tastings, and the wine is so refreshing and unique, we wound up walking away with several more bottles than we originally planned!
C.
Awesome wine tasting, staff were so friendly and full of information. Yummy wine aswell.
R.
Great wine, great people. Free tasting, they just ask for a donation to a charity. The drive there is also spectacular. One of the original vineyards of the region.
H.
Stunning Local Farm History, Chard Farm was transformed into a High Quality Vineyard, established in 1987. #PinotNoir #PinotGris #RichardChard
R.
Fabulous vineyard and amazing drive in beside the river. Amazing tasting experience with the wonderful Pauline. Still enjoying the photos, memories and wine.
K.
The cliff side road that connects the vineyard to the main road is narrow and unique. Picturesque landscape and buildings.
J.
On of the most stunning wineries in the world. Book in advance for tours
I.
Be careful if you're biking here on a windy day. Once you arrive you'll be delighted by the wine. The tasting is based on donation.
M.
The driveway towards the winery alone is worthwhile the visit. The Chard farm wines and hospitality the cherry on the cake!
J.
Beautiful winery down a challenging road that requires a bit of care. The team were really friendly and gave lots of background on the wines. The cellar door is free however a donation to their charity or a purchase is strongly encouraged. Lastly and most importantly their wine was fantastic and well worth a try.
M.
Beautiful buildings and the staff know their wines well.
B.
Awesome wines. Very friendly knowledgable staff. Recomend if you love great wines.
N.
We all loved the super friendly service, the whole experience, and the delicious wines of course. The cliff edge driveway is adventurous with stunning views! Loved the grounds and setting. Thanks!
R.
Thoroughly enjoyed our wine tasking with Jessie at Chard Farm, which is in a beautiful spot not far from Queenstown. Jessie was both entertaining and informative. Not only did the wine we ordered arrive a few days after we returned home, but she also popped a little gift inside. Highly recommend a visit to their cellar door, and we will look forward to doing so again in the future.
L.
Absolutely loved our visit to Chard Farm, thoroughly enjoyed the wine tasting. Pauline was great fun and offered fantastic service. The Mata- Au Pinot Noir is beautiful and definitely worth a try!
T.
Fantastic wine & even better service! Pauline was a hoot & very knowledgable about all of the wines! She even gave us some recommendations for our South Island travels, which was just brilliant! Will be visiting again thats for sure!
N.
Great winery and fantastic cellar door experience. Really knowledgeable and enthusiastic
M.
Stunning wines set amongst a spectacular valley. Worth the slightly precarious drive in.
R.
This winery is almost as incredible as the winding drive to get there! We came here for a tasting and ended up leaving with a bottle of pinot noir. The lady hosting our tasting was very personable and the wine was delicious. I would highly recommend coming here if you're heading down the wine trail!
K.
Five stars for the wine & having a basket of toys for our toddler. Less for the service. Once we disclosed we are from a restricted state in the US, the vibe immediately changed from friendly & eager to help and offer tastings to “sorry we are at the end of the list and these are only for private tastings.” The wines should not be on the list if it’s not an option to taste. Beautiful vineyard and we were excited to visit, but bummed with the service.
N.
Great cellar door - arguably with the best vista of any vineyard in New Zealand. Great wines that are reasonably priced, and the service at the cellar door is great, first time from Pauline who was great to chat to and second time from Jesse who was able to introduce the wines in Mandarin to our family visiting from China who do not speak English. Free shipping in NZ for six or more bottles, which we gladly took advantage of. It was a very nice touch to have a hand written note from Pauline when the wine arrive. Great service, great wine, great views - well done Chard Farm team!
A.
Lovely winery just out of Arrowntown (about 15 min drive). Beautiful gardens with buildings that would look at home in Tuscany, Italy.
Tasting was very well run. The host was friendly, funny and knowledgeable about the delicious wines.
The experience was made even better when Harry (the winery's cat) made an appearance to assist the host with our tasting.
R.
Reaching this point via the windy, cliffside road is an adventure in itself. Once there we enjoyed a tasting planned carefully so the flavors did not overwhelm each other. We took home some bottles of the Judge and Jury Chardonnay. It was our favorite, such a unique flavor.
Charitable aspect is that tastings are free, but you can donate to the local hospice.
K.
We went when they were doing up their normal room for guests, so we were literally in the winery itself for free tasting of 6 of their wines. The lady who did it was amazing, her little speals and things, big smile, made it great and worth it!
S.
Awesome service, ordered online and arrived a couple of days after. Super prompt. And great price. Really happy, coming down in November for wedding anniversary we will call in again for a wee sampler again.
J.
My husband and I had a great time here. The lady helping us for the tasting was very knowledgeable, witty, and helpful. The wines are also very tasty. We are from the San Francisco area of California and are lucky enough to go wine tasting in the Napa valley on occasion. I can say their Tiger Pinot is one of the best I've had. Recommend!
C.
Beautiful view of the vineyard and winery as you drive in - great photo op! Once at the tasting cellar, Chard Farm offers wonderful variety of whites (loved the Riesling and chardonnay) and some amazing pinot noirs. The tasting area is simple and pleasant and the staff knowledgeable. And the tasting is free. We bought a bottle of their 2017 Pinot noir. Delicious
R.
Had a great time tasting the wines at Chard Farm. Nice drive in (which, living in New Zealand, didn’t faze me but for foreign tourists it might be a bit scary). Lovely wines and a nice tasting experience, would definitely recommend stopping by.
A.
This is the wine tasting you’ve been looking for! The vineyard and cellar door tasting room were charming, but the staff made it stellar! Very welcoming, knowledgeable, and she even gave us a map and suggestions of where to tour to next.
D.
We absolutely loved the family owned feel of Chard Farm, an experience unlike anything else. Jessie was an awesome host and her knowledge was brilliant. I loved the story behind Chard Farm and their respect for the history of the property. Their wines are wonderful too!
C.
We went to four vineyards that day: one charged 20 bucks for tasting (!), two were passable, Chard Farm was hands down the best, the friendliest, and had some of the best wine I've ever had.
FYI it's free tasting with any purchase or they ask for a ten dollar donation to the local hospice. Pretty decent arrangement.
L.
Lovely winery. Beautiful location.High quality. $5-$10 dollar hospice donation for tasting. The owner was lovely and really new how to interact well with our group. She passed on some great information about the queenstown area too
K.
Fabulous! The drive in makes it seem like you are on such an adventure, and the wine makes it worth the trek! The sommelier was hilarious and very knowledgeable - she made our experience extra memorable. This should be #1 on your list!
M.
We were squeezed in on a busy day and got to sample a fine selection of wines. Thank you to Suzie who took care of us throughout the experience. Her knowledge and guidance was impressive. Thank you
C.
Called in just before 5pm thinking we might be too late for a wine tasting. Pauline was so great and made us feel very welcome. The wine was delicious, perfect end to a lovely day.
M.
Friendly staff and some great wines. Location is amazing as well. $10 donation (to a local charity) for wine tasting, but if a bottle is purchased then that is void. Seems common among the vineyards.
C.
We enjoyed the wine sampling in the cellar for only $10. The winery donates the $10 ffrom the tasting toward the local hospice, which made the tasting all the more worth it. Our host was very friendly and we got to try a wide variety of wines including reisling, Gewurztraminer, Pinot noir, and Chardonnay.
Worth doing the terrifying cliff side drive along the single lane gravel road to stop in for a gander.
B.
Worth the drive over the old road to visit here. Awesome views. Take care on the road.
A.
Great place and was entertained by Jessie, a real jewel. Bought a case of wine. Shame no cafe. The road although only 1.5km long could be challenging.
A.
Spectacular ride in by car or E-bike. The vineyard catches the sun nicely and the wines each display their special character. Our wine guide was helpful and managed to send me back to chardonay .... with a bottle of reisling and pinot as well!
L.
The Reisling here is my fav! Great little winery.
A.
Excellent cellar door wine tasting experience. Even during a rush of customers we still received cheerful unhurried attention. Wonderful wines.
A.
Lovely place.make you feel ok if you dont buy
M.
Great service and lovely wine.
z.
Amazing wines with unbelievable view
C.
The drive to this winery is amazingly beautiful, the staff is so welcoming, friendly, and knowledgeable. The wines are delicious and I would go back to this winery!
A.
Great wines and nice to try their unoaked Chardonnay which is really good! It's not just about the reds! But don't be an idiot and try park on the road there so you can take a photo...
S.
Only just found out about this winery and had some lovely pinot noirs from them recently and loved them all. Can't wait to visit soon!!
A.
It was okay. Views were fantastic, wines were good, service was okay. I did highly approve of how they gave the tasting fees to the hospice - a lovely gesture. Don't think I'd visit again though.
J.
Really worth the drive up, not for the faint hearted though, as a narrow road next to the rugged terrain that gives this winery such character. Their pinot noir is definitely on my top list.
R.
Pauline is lovely. Paints this wonderful picture before tasting each wine. She is hilarious as well! The experience is awesome.
A.
If you can get your hands on The Tiger Pinot Noir, this is amazing. Beautiful venue and crazy drive in against the river . Well worth the visit.
L.
Good value wines situated on opposite side of the valley. The tortuous drive was quite frightening but it was worth it. Would recommond visit them early during the day for safety purposes.
K.
Traditional tasting room style with friendly staff. Note tastings are complementary, if you don’t plan on purchasing wine bring some money for donations to charity.
c.
Very friendly.. a must go. Beautiful views. Loved the road in. Just drive slow..
R.
Exquisite wines from a very special vineyard. The selection was some of the top we tasted in the area, a great stop if you’re in Queenstown
P.
To my unprofessional taste, I enjoyed the drops from Chard Farm the most. Go beyond the Pinot Noir and the staff are simply warm and welcoming. No pretension, just warm hospitality.
K.
Loved the Chard farm red wines best! Gorgeous buildings, neatly manicured.
L.
Amazing service. Beautiful wines. One of our favourite winery's in Queenstown
J.
The woman doing the tasting was a hoot and very friendly, you can have 6 tastings for free if you purchase a bottle of wine or give a donation to the hospital, wines were very good with good tasting sample sizes.
A.
Recently visited when in Queenstown for the weekend. Great service, very friendly, fantastic wines. Beautiful views heading in to the vineyard.
Highly recommend!
F.
Even if the wines were terrible, this one is worth it just for the incredible cliffside drive. Luckily the wines are fantastic. I have already recommended this place, and will do so again.
M.
Had an awesome tasting experience here - and it’s free if you buy a bottle! Only wish they had a spot to take a glass and sit outside.. but otherwise would recommend it!
M.
Chard Farm is charming and the wine is great but nerves of steal required to take on the donley track up the side of a mountain ravine to get there
P.
Friendly people. Tasting "donation" seems high at $10 but at least they donate it to charity. Nice selection of wines but quite expensive. The road in its interesting, you expect Wil-e-coyote to chase Road Runner past any second. Great views. Picturesque location overlooking AJ Hackett Bungee.
D.
The lady that did our tasting today at 4.30pm was f* AMAZING. Awesome great cellar experience! Will be back
k.
Great host and description of wines
D.
It was a very adventurous drive up a scary dirt road to get there, but once we were there staff was very nice, welcoming, and their wines were delicious!
K.
Had the most fantastic fun today at your Cellar Door...awesome knowledge and great story telling by the lively Pauline....we bought lots and reccomend the tasting experience grounds and views to all our friends
K.
Amazing views from the property. Didn't do wine tasting as they were quite busy when we arrived.
S.
Great ambience, superb staff and even better wine 😁
K.
We had a lovely time tasting wines here. Went home with a case! The road in is interesting even if you aren't into wine tasting.
B.
It is an amsazing place. Good location. Great view. But it's test only. Cannot buy glass of wine due to narrow road.
G.
The River Run Pinot Noir is an extremely under rated Central Otago wine. It stands out amongst many mor decorated Pinots in the heart of world class Pinot districts. Buy some, drink some you’ll see !
J.
Always an amazing experience. Lovely place, fantastic wine, friendly staff.
S.
Beautiful vineyard, amazing wine tasting and the lady serving us was so lovely & knowledgeable. Highly recommend visiting!
C.
Charming vineyard. Excellent wines. If you like something between dry and fruity try the gewuztaminer or vipers vineyard riesling 2017.
d.
Excellent customer service..they explain everything in good detail with free tasting of 6 types of wine..great taste and selection..loved the whole experience..
R.
We visited Chard Farm lured by its absolutely spectacular surroundings. The tasting experience was a bit of a let down - it was very crowded and we felt forgotten.
C.
Fantastic wine! Fantastic front man! They know their wine. I loved visiting here. Great information. Friendly
S.
Tastings are free but if you don't buy a bottle they ask you to donate for a good cause
Lovely drive up and a gorgeous view
W.
