Reviews of Highwic Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga.
E.
Beautiful gardens and seems there is also a lava cave under one boundary wall. Very mysterious and was just awesome to visit on my own one day.
C.
This is a must visit for anyone who appreciates historic buildings. This Carpenter Gothic building with its quality period interiors is an all round delightful experience.
S.
If you are a little in love with the beauty of the past, this place will not disappoint. My partner and I were the only ones there and we took our time exploring and delighting in the details of how well made things were. Also intriguing to think of the relationship between the lady of the house and her unpaid companion. The companion was chosen by the dying first wife to become the next and care for the children (as well as having many more). The garden is lovely and I'd recommend dressing up in old fashioned clothes and having a picnic! I wish it was a bit cheaper and then I'd visit more often ($10 entry).
G.
Went there with a bus tour. We were given a very interesting talk on the history of the house and could ask questions and then we could wander around the beautifully kept house and gardens.
N.
Lovely school holiday trip to explore this huge mansion. Very kid friendly with the search and find activities. Clipboards and pencils provided! The gardens were also a fun place to explore.

What an amazing experience I had today, the moment I entered on the hill I felt like I m in 1920s, the house itself is beautiful and the receptionist RUTH was just amazing. while she was explaining me everything about the Buckland family tree , I felt like that I m In that time when stories happened in highwic...such an amazing in day this house. I was going out and coming back so many times as I liked it so much. everything inside the house is a kind of story. I must say, People who like history and visiting historical houses should must visit here. I even felt like If i stayed over there longer , I might gonna end up bringing my bags😅 to stay over there. Very Peaceful.
I m’m sure that i will be visiting highwic again someday!

We have been meaning to visit here for sometime. Glad we finally made it, it was a quiet day, we felt like we had the house to ourselves, only spotted one other family late during our visit.
It's a wee bit of the beaten track, hard to think you're in the middle of bustling Newmarket. Enjoying wandering around the house trying to imagine what it would have been to live there in those times. My favourite area was The Boy's Barrack's at the top of the house, even the Playroom was cool. But as the signage informs you, it was warm during the Summer, but cold during the Winter.
Well worth a visit !

A delightful 19th century Colonial Home set in the heart of Newmarket.
Ample parking on site and a Victorian style garden to visit as well. The house has a $10 entrance fee which is well worth the visit. There is a small shop on site.
K.
We were the only visitors, my daughter was intrigued by that doll house & antique dolls on the beds. We loved stepping back in time. Oh I love the garden.

This place and the stories associated with it are just amazing. The house and its inhabitants had an important role in the development of Tāmaki Makaurau/ Auckland. The displays and information panels give a strong sense of what life was like in the late 19th century for affluent Pākehā families. It’s also the first stop on the Pouhere Taonga/ Heritage New Zealand tour of the Waikato sites from the New Zealand Wars. Also surprisingly quiet and tranquil even though surrounded by Westfield Newmarket and the Newmarket Flyover.
g.
Beautiful historic home with a lot of information about the original family who lived there. Lovely decor and pleasant gardens.
M.
Marvelous, I went to see an exhibition there and I discover such a beautiful place in the middle of Newmarket.
A.
Newmarket's best kept secret. An oasis of English Garden, a snippet of native bush, colourful flowers and a 1900s homestead in the middle of metropolis central Auckland. Well worth a visit!
R.

I felt like I had gone back in time the moment I entered this house. Was fascinating to see how life was, a little over a century ago. The man who worked there was very nice and helpful, and educated us on some extra interesting facts. Nice to do if you have a couple of hours to spare!
k.
Went for the taxidermy expo was pretty cool, was really fun seeing inside the house too

A Beautiful Bungalow surrounded by a still more beautiful garden, maintained so very well. I was mesmerized by the enormity of the place and it is really amazing that one family lived here with all their children. It is amazing to see how they have pumped their water up.And also a word of appreciation for the Trust who have dedicated a bench in memory of Sandy Kittson, who worked at the property. A great gesture indeed.
T.

Highwic was brought to Auckland's care through the research and advocacy of John Stacpoole Poole OBE who has recently passed away aged 99 years.
This is a beacon of Auckland's 19th century domestic architecture. The staff are helpful and know their history.
A brilliant venue for heritage events and private parties.
C.
A house I could live in now, it had a lovely atmosphere. It must have been a very comfortable home in its day. Loved the timber walls inside.
A.

Delightful Heritage Homestead, being so close to a shopping mall it show the contrast between old and new. Old has way more character.

Auckland’s premier shopping precinct, Newmarket, is the legacy of 'rags to riches' auctioneer Alfred Buckland. Explore his rambling Gothic mansion built to house his family of 21 children!
Highwic
A visit to Highwic opens the door to family life in the colonial ‘boom and bust’ period of Auckland during the New Zealand Land Wars. Alfred Buckland was involved in provisioning the imperial forces during the Waikato War, (1863-1864). Highwic is featured as the first stop on the Waikato War Driving Tour.
Highwic is a peaceful and leafy oasis in the heart of Auckland. Situated on a rise above bustling Newmarket, the lawns and gardens appear to be suspended above the city with high-rise towers just visible beyond the hedges.
Surrounded by large specimen trees, with a Whimsical Garden, lawn courts for tennis and croquet and a meandering “Lovers Walk”, this garden delights all ages.
S.

(Translated) You must visit the former home of Hevik. There is a very spiritual old man who will patiently introduce you to the history of this family. Will take you on an unreserved visit. Everything is intact. I can hardly imagine how well the 150-year-old house can be preserved. There is an old piano at the very bottom of the first floor, and the old man offered me an impeachment. The sound of the piano is pretty good, it belongs to the thick one.

(Translated) Superb house for its history, the very welcoming employees explain the whole history of the family who lived in this house! Some outdoor games for children 🖒
