Reviews of New Zealand Maritime Museum
A.
Took an evening sail on board the Ted Ashby, it was a beautiful evening, was offered drinks and nibbles and told stories from the crew. Highly enjoyable.
C.
So much money and effort has gone into making this a thoroughly interesting and insightful exhibition - and it’s paid off. From immigrants sailing to New Zealand, to the America’s Cup and Olympics, there is incredible detail into the history and stories behind key maritime events in NZ, and goes right up to the current day with facts and quotes dating 2020. There are many interactive features, such as some screens where you can design your race boat on a computer screen and race against the computer simulation or with friends to see who has designed the fastest. My favourite section was reading and discovering about the people who travelled over to NZ for a new life from the UK, what their boat life was like (seeing various cabins) and what they did when they arrived. It is an extremely entertaining and immersive experience and I thought excellent value. I was not expecting such a detailed, interesting, up-to-date and genuinely captivating series of exhibitions.
s.
Auckland, City of Sails. Alot of history! If u like boats or ships this is the place! You can even take a Saling trip around the amazing Auckland Harbour
l.
This was actually the best museum I’ve been to in NZ. The displays were fantastic - varied, interesting and with loads of information. It really exceeded my expectations and I’ll be back to spend more time to really look around. We also went on the heritage boat, which was a really fun experience. The crew were so friendly, and let us have a go at doing lots of stuff while sailing. So great that you can actually go out on the boats and not just look at them! It really was a great day out, and I’ll definitely be going back!

I feel that the NZ Maritime Museum is an unappreciated gem of Auckland. Every time I have been here with kids in "tow" it has never been a disappointing experience. My kids absolutely love it, although the rocking cabin did scare my youngest :) . This is a great Museum to visit, but I really want them to open up a maritime route to Torpedo Bay Navy Museum! It would be an amazing experience to take a vessel directly from this Museum from across the harbour to another very well established museum which shares a common heritage!!
D.
Nice museum to visit to understand the maritime heritage of New Zealand.
C.
My family went to ride the boat and sightseeing in the museum. The place is good and the award winning goes to the very friendly staffs!! Everyone is so friendly and accomodating.
S.
Naturally a very informative and thorough space of maritime culture & history. I recall the library is not open every day. Free for residents. If you take your time and take in what is here, it's a nice, relaxing spot away from the busy-ness. I liked the short audio story selection with comfy chairs.
T.
Great history of NZ maritime history including a tribute to our America's cup and Whitbread history.
G.
A museum which shows you NZ maritime heritage. It will take around one hour to see this museum.
Ticket is free for Aucklanders.
I.
Awesome experience as we went on Ted Asbhy for sailing. The team is so hard working and friendly. Must do.
Museum is very interesting too. Can easily spend couple of hours there.
M.
Good Experience with the Family. Had awesome fun on Sailing, staffs are friendly and Knowledgeable. Museum is very clean and tidy well maintain. Definitely Recommend.

If you are a boat person, sailor, yacht racing fan, or local history buff you must visit this museum when visit Auckland.
It shows many boats and nautical technologies used by generations of island settlers, New Zealand explorers and immigrants, and the development and perfection of sailing techniques and equipment.
I especially enjoyed the reconstructed early boats that were used by interisland settlers, and by the Maori after their arrival, as well as the displays of the America’s Cup boats and the history and memorabilia associated with those races.
It took about an hour and a half to see everything, and watch some of their short documentary films.
The museum is free for “locals”, and $26 (NZ) each for adult tourists.
There is a cafe and gift shop at the entrance.
Also, you can book boat rides on a traditional Waka canoe sailing craft, the Nautilus boat, or several other historic sailing ships with your friends and family. A great way to see the harbor and learn about local culture.
E.
Staff were very friendly and extremely helpful and knowledgeable. Went sailing on one of the old boats, the Mate and crew were great but the Skipper needed personality transplant. We didnt let him sour our day which was a beautiful autumn Sunday afternoon. When we got back I sat at White & Wongs while the family went through the museum. Perfect.
C.
Experience history first hand at the 🖼️ Museum Gallery along with the Ted Ashby Sail ⛵ all the way under the Auckland Harbour Bridge 🌉 ... Learn about the importance of maritime travel 🧳 and it's historic importance during early European settlement... See the different boats 🚢 used in the past few centuries including restored models of actual boats and also the legendary Team NZ Sail boat that won the 1995 America's Cup 🏆
S.
Great little place, which seems huge when you go around though. Free for NZ residents but worth it even if they start charging. Good history of sailing and boating in NZ, great for kids and adults interested in boats, yachts, ships of all sizes. Interactive games are cool where you get to navigate.
M.
Totally worth a visit. The museum is in a great part of Auckland if you want to look around some amazing yachts and launches. This museum is constantly adding to their collection. Lots of history represented going way back to the Maori navigators who found Aotearoa.
N.
A warm and beautiful day presented to me by the sailing team. I had a wonderful time in ted ashby, sailing around the auckland harbour with a very friendly crew members. Special thanks to Micheal, one of the crew member for your service and friendly manners. The beautiful view of the city and the calmness and warmth of the sun all inclusive in this sailing experience.
R.
This is a great extremely interesting museum to visit any time one is in down town Auckland and the Viaduct Basin area. Gives a very good overview of New Zealand's maritime history, and especially our America Cup history, successes and failures. We had our grandkids with us, who are 9, 7 and 4 and were reasonably interested but probably to get the full benefits and history, may need to be a little bit older, but they enjoyed themselves plus the visit is free to Aucklanders with proof of residence and address. Nice little cafe and gift shop, with great books for the kid's age group. Easy access then also to the Viaduct and all it's cafes, restaurants open walking and play areas, fantastic days visit.

Excellent museum
Contemporary and historic exhibits; great mix. Allow half a day there is a LOT to see.
J.
I've lived in Auckland for nearly five years and finally went. It was great. Great for seniors. Great for parents. Great for kids. There are areas that each group may not enjoy, but overall it was excellent. If you go, go before noon so that you can see the little cannon that packs a punch.
A.
The museum showcases the different types of boats, from old age to present time. Takes around 1 hour to see the entire place. There are some areas for interactive learning for children and groups. Overall a okay place to visit if you have time to pass.
S.
Free entry for Auckland residents. A very interesting place with lots of knowledge about the sea and ships related stuff like aspects within the ship, lighthouses, fishing, voyages, ship captains, sailing, etc. Also there is a small ship simulator which I found it fun. Also, it has a small room with beds in the ship and cabins. They have plenty of beautiful ship models. Also gud info about the Maori's way of travelling on water and fishing. Definitely, this place needs to checked out.
Z.
Fantastic weekend gateway for Aucklander and foreign visitors. Sail experience is awesome .
h.
A wonderful experience the New Zealand take their sailing heritage very seriously and educating their youth and the world is very important to them.
They touch on the Māori history and travel through nautical time to the Black Magic and winning America's Cup.
S.
Maritime history going back to the beginning of New Zealand. Awesome exhibit of Sir Peter Blake. The guided tour is free and well worth it.
P.
Great museum on the waterfront. Indigenous craft, models and full size ocean racing yachts on display with several AV presentations. Allow several hours for your visit!
S.
Right next to the Viaduct. The museum starts with different variations of Maori boats, and then pictures and stories of pre and post world war boats, and the finally the modern boats. There's also a section on the Americas Cup and Sir Peter Blake. Great experience!
m.
Just so you know....it's free for NZ residents...includes even students. 😍
It's a great place to get to know the NZ culture more in detail and a fabulous place to explore more about the Marine world. It's massive although it doesn't initially look that massive but it's simply amazing.
It's a #nzmustdo thing at least once.
Waters are always mysterious and you'll see why when you visit them. ❣️
C.
Can't say I have an interest in boats and things but it was cool to see the artifacts and interact with the items available.
J.
I found it very informative, they have an impressive collection of maritime history, a few very cool exhibits and plenty of information on some of New Zealand's history. I especially liked the historical maps.
M.
what a great informative museum. you can walk around here for hours and delve into everything about what happened then and now. really recommended. i loved it.
J.
When in Auckland one should visit this place to understand why the Kiwis love to sail. The rich history of the country's love for the sea and sailing is captured in this historical museum. For locals who live in NZ admission is free. For tourists there is a minimal fee. There are free lockers where you can keep your bags while viewing the displayed items.
M.
Interesting place to learn the marine-related knowledge! Great location, easy to get by, and the canoes inside the museum are definitely eye opening. However, if one is expecting a more “interactive” experience, this place may not be it (maybe not ideal for kids?) beautiful view of the harbour front too.
T.
Blown away by how good this is! Free entry for aucklanders - never knew.
Book ahead to go on a sailing adventure in the hauraki gulf.
Parking at the closeby auckland city carpark is very reasonably priced at anytime.
The cafe there is good, but explore the many eateries in fhe viaduct area.
L.
We went in here to pass some extra time we had and it was a nice surprise. I especially enjoyed the immigration exhibits. Learned a lot about New Zealand history. It's a really big museum with lots to see even if you aren't into Maritime.
M.
Great place to come and relive some of the Maritime history of New Zealand. Will come back to bring kids back here when they are a little older so they can understand the history but soak in the details.
P.
Lovely museum exhibiting a nice mix of past and present, from original people to America's Cup technicals with interesting simulations. Rooms successively show boats, ships, craftsmanship, exploration and immigration stories.
O.
Good experience history of NZ maritime, worth a visit
A.
Awesome, must see place if you ever visit the city. Absolutely loved the interactive stations and the every modeled ship had such a high quality, authentic look to them.
M.
Great place to relax and learn about the maritime history of New Zealand. Free for Auckland residents with great restaurants nearby to relax near the wharf. Also have the option of heading out onto the water.
N.
Really enjoyed our visit here. Lots to see and really got a feel for the different eras of sailing. The best part was the floating cabin where you could experience what it would have been like to travel third class from Europe to NZ, minus the health hazards :)
S.
Very much a quality experience , quite broad range of subjects covered, only did the first floor as ran short on time
k.
We enjoyed our day here. Loved to Ted sailing experience
All the staff are lovely
Highly recommend
L.
Excellent museum though my kids were only interested in the large sandpit and the kids boat for climbing and playing! Museum has excellent displays otherwise, and has a great position in the Viaduct.
D.
Very nice museum. I especially liked the documentation about the life of Peter Blake. Also the additional bookable sailing trip was fun
J.
An excellent maritime museum which is free to Auckland residents. The immigration exhibit is well put together and thoroughly interesting.
M.
Such an awesome variety of exhibits. Wonderfully laid out and an engrossing experience. Highly recommended.
C.
A great little museum on the waterfront in Auckland. Exhibits on both the Maori and European migration story; as well as the sporting tradition.
V.
Recommend to visit, there are exebition for children too. Definitely must do in Auckland
J.
Interesting history about both European and South Pacific maritime exploration. Would highly recommend the boat tour through the harbour
R.
A great afternoon spent at the NZ Maritime Museum. Free to Auckland residents. Bring your library card along.
C.
Wonderful Visit! Te Toki roopu awesome! Lee and Leah thank you both for educating our tamariki from Waimahia Intermediate school.
V.
It was really good experience for kids to take the sailing boat. Friendly sailors encouraged my daughter who was new to the water.
C.
Was great to explore and know more about the ⛵ New Zealand maritime museum, and for the love of it am now a volunteer at the museum because I love sailing, I also get to know how Mauri people migrated from Polynesian , it was awonderful history to learn about because there are some similarities between Mauri culture and African culture.
Let's I forget am so happy the Canon fire is back, it's a little one but make a very loud noise☄️
M.
Very interesting museum..just to realize how far we have come along the long sea journey..and the Heritage sailing is a must do...
R.
Looks like we clearing space 4 a party. Can I come
C.
Quite a vibrant scene, with bar and restaurant all around the harbour. The museum is most suitably located, right next to the harbour. Tickets for Whale and Dolphins watching cruise can be purchased here.
A.
Awesome gallery. Wasnt expecting much but was pleasently surprised. Good insights into Maori culture
M.
Great museum if you're interested in this respective subject. Learn about New Zealand maritime history from Pacific Islander travels and tech to speed yachts and other modern naval developments.
Includes a section on lighthouses and economic trade. If you're there at noon, they also have a small live hand cannon demonstration.
S.
Free entry for students and good place to visit in holidays. It takes around 60 min to explore the museum.
S.
Informative and helpful staff, exhibits are detailed and interesting. Did a boat ride in the harbour on a steam boat that I thoroughly enjoyed, was informative, relaxing and offered a spectacular view of not only the harbour, but also the CBD.
P.
Wonderful family time looking forward and back at maritime examples.Gives you an idea of how easy life is now, with modern inventions. Good on you.
R.
Friendly & Helpful staff. Very informative and beautiful canoe displays.
R.
Fabulous family day outing - if you love maritime matters, there's tons for the kids to see and do. Take the public transport to Britomart and a short walk to this museum.
O.
Amazing place with a lot of stories and nice staff. Highly recomended for the those one who lost the soul in the sea)
K.
Great place for kids and adults👍
J.
Trip on Ted Ashby and Museum visit were an excellent afternoon
C.
Very nice experience on board of the Ted Ashby scow. The museum has a detailed collection of models to tell the historiy of New Zealand through its maritime records.
M.
It was great to see the museum. The sailing after museum was the highlight
J.
Lots to look at, well presented displays. Recommended for people of all ages.
E.
Interesting place, including detailed histories of New Zealand immigration and New Zealand's thirty years of participation in America's Cup racing!
A.
Enjoyed a great afternoon sail on the Ted Ashby. Perfect weather and friendly crew
P.
I enjoyed the maritime history of how New Zealand was discovered how it became populated with immigrants. Also there is an abundance of information about America's Cup history and New Zealand's role and I learned a lot! I took my time and spent about 2 hours here.
h.
Amazing exhibits and education museum trip for kids and adults alike.
T.
It was nice to see a range of ships & NZ history
M.
Bigger than you would expect. So much to do and see here. Educational and fun.
L.
Very interesting and varied exhibits, I learnt about setting from Waka to the America's Cup. Well worth a visit!
V.
Amazing experience! You don't get to be on a sailboat sailing under the harbour bridge everyday!
M.
Coffee is good, but not spectacular. Same with the cheese scones. A little dry and hard on the outside, somewhat small, and it's possible that they used a microwave for heating. Not terrible by any means, but I'd be somewhat disappointed if I had made this. Butter is presented lolly-style. Taps for both cold and soda water are available and highly appreciated.
D.
Outstanding musuem of maritime artifacts from indiginous vessels right up to the present. Allow at least 2 hours because there is a lot to see. Recommended.
A.
Very interesting the best bit was a sail around the harbour on the museum's sailing ship
N.
Ted Ashby sailing experience is highly recommended.
O.
We spent four hours touring this marvellous museum. The various exhibits featured several aspects of the New Zealand maritime history including the sailing craft of the indigenous people, the arrival of the Europeans by ship including the immigrant experience, the evolution of multiple and varied maritime vessels in the whaling, timber, and coastal economies, navigation, and the more recent America’s Cup sailing competition featuring the glorious efforts of the New Zealand teams led by Sir Peter Blake.
Well laid out and fully accessible. Plenty of exhibits to keep the whole family amused and occupied for an hour or so.
There are interactive exhibits and activities for the kids. This is a great museum activity for the whole family.
A very interesting history of New Zealand's Maritime history, full of information for early days up to the latest Americas Cup race next year.
k.
Good experience
Specially worldwar monuments are well maintained and gives lot of information
J.
Nice museum, time spend was two hours,
A.
Very interesting museum displaying NZ's maritime history. Good Americas Cup exibit displaying many items of memorabilia.
R.
If you or your kids love pirates, you'll love this place.
P.
I initially visited as I had some time to kill in the area but was pleasantly surprised. The museum was bigger than I expected and there was plenty to see. The exhibits were really interesting. I especially liked the immigration stories and the exhibits on history to modern day sailing. Friendly and helpful staff, well kept, good learning experience. Nice variety of historical sailboats I would highly recommend a visit :)
S.
So much information. Was amazing to see the early settlers traveling conditions at sea! Must have been some tough people back then!
I.
Pretty good. It does get a bit a little boring. You see one boat you see em all sorta thing. But im not really a boat person. I did enjoy the history. We have come along way.
I could visit again in another 10yrs.
C.
Nice day out lots of history and information you do however have to pay to go in
V.
This museum was a lovely surprise for us. I never realized its scale from the outside. Loads of cool interactive things...and the chance to sail on the Ted Ashby. An Auckland must do!
L.

T.
Enjoy 1 hour of sailing with Ted Ashby and visit the Maritime collection.
G.
Great museum! Very entertaining and fun! The interactive activities are fun for children and adults. Reasonable prices.
V.
This is a wonderful place to learn about the Sea Creatures in New Zealand. Please be careful of the doors because some of them are Alarmed so when you open them an Alarm will Go off.
M.
Loved it! We took children from our local school, and they were engaged from the moment they started the tour. The interactive areas were wonderful 👏😁. All model boats, ships, and steamers were a hit. The polynesian outriggers - wow!! Black Magic was incredible. Our kids really enjoyed it. An amazing day out for everyone. 👍👍👏😁.
J.
A very informative place for all ages.
오.
What a fantastic place to visit with kids. Staffs are super kind and friendly, alot of things to wathlch. And sailing was a great choice.
A.
Staff members are friendly and if you want to get a free entry, you'll need a proof of address such as auckland library card, water/electricity bill, or council rate bill. The museum is split into 3 segments: education area, history of new zealand maritime and european settlement era, and yachting. It has some interactive exhibition which would be awesome if it's working as the interactive exhibition was not-working when I went there. The 2nd segment has a low lighting hence it was the least liked part by my boy. He did like the outside play area, and the interactive exhibition, despite it wasn't working.
d.
Very interesting. The range of boats was nicely displayed. We loved the film at the start of the tour on the origins of New Zealand from the Maori legend. Good place for kids in wheelchairs apart from the toilet facilities need to include a bench with padded surface and non touch waste bins. Great visit. Especially the canon.
C.
Awesome place to learn the history about famous and popular historical boats! Free to any Auckland resident and love the fact that the canon goes off at midday! Very interesting to look at the detail off the boats and what makes them famous. Also extremely recommending the boat tour of the harbour which gives great scenery of the city and the harbour bridge from underneath. Great place.
L.
I’m not here as often as I’d like, but i always enjoy it when I am. Yes, this museum is not as impressive to some but, anyone interested in NZ and Pacific history... their ways of life are on display here in the museum. Take your time and …
A.
Awesome staff and we'll explained about the tour
M.
A really excellent maritime museum.
Culturally educational as well.
Well worth a visit
A.
We didn't think this would take long to go through, but we ended up blowing past the end after a few hours of meandering and hunger beckoning. Be sure to visit all the areas because it was clear many did not see most exhibits beyond the beginning few. Highly enjoyed it. Young children seemed to have fun, too, although wouldn't know from personal experience.
R.
Beautifully planned museum, and a must-see if you are a lover of sailing or exploration.
B.
Good educational platform.
Well set up.
D.
Free if you're an auckland resident, just show proof of address. Not a big site, some cool models, well crafted and great location. Good to take the kids around and show some history too
G.
A great place to learn of New Zealand's Maritime history.
S.
The Maritime Museum was the highlight of our trip to Auckland. It was amazing to hear about the various types of ships, see the various attractions as well as learn about Auckland's sailing history.
We arrived just in time for a tour, and to our amazement, it was no only free but we were the only ones. Barry was an extremely good tour-guide, incredibly knowledgeable and gave fantastic snippets of his own extensive experiences.
I would highly recommend visiting this museum, especially timing it with a tour to get the absolute most out your time.
C.
Great for a rainy day activity with lots of things to look at. Very large focus on the Americas cup. The older boats were amazing but our kids couldn't stand the smell as the old wood in an enclosed space was very overpowering. I wouldn't recommend going with younger kids unless they are specifically into boats. Older kids may find the detail interesting.
R.
Excellent museum of New Zealand maritime history.
R.
A true record of Aotearoa's maritime history that will keep you occupied for some considerable time. Extremely enjoyable!
If you take proof of being a Auckland resident there is no charge.
V.
It is also very nice place for children.
My 3 years old son enjoyed here a lot.
l.
Nice place to visit. Plenty boats to see and heaps of history. 12pm they blow the cannon. Pretty awesome.
R.
Very enjoyable for my grandson and me
J.
The exhibits are nice and, if you're a local, it's free to get it. One of my favorite things about the museum is, every so often, they will arrange it so that you can buy tickets to do a sailing on a heritage vessel. It's incredibly fun, and not pricey at all. If you get the chance, do it!
P.
Fantastic day out. We did the museum which was very well thought out and beautifully presented. We then headed for a sail on one of their 3 boat options: The Ted Ashby. The crew, all volunteers, were very professional and knowledgeable. Made for a fantastic sail
R.
Was not expecting much as we just had sometime to kill. The exhibits were really informative and brought home the magnitude (and courage) of the Polynesian migrations. It was also great to see the national pride shown towards Sir Peter Blake and his crew of "Black Magic".
K.
Great museum. Well worth the money. We went on a holiday so the tour wasn't run, but we still had a great time. One of the most well put together museums I've been to, and definitely the best maritime museum. The way they showed the journey of people from Europe to NZ was incredible. One of the rooms even bobs up and down like you're on a boat while you hear about their stories in the cramped quarters. It really takes you back to those times.
R.
Hidden treasure for all to enjoy as it can easily be missed. I initially thought it was just a gift shop with a few boat displays but it is much bigger than anticipated and beautiful to read and explore NZ's maritime history. Was fortunate to be there for work. However definitely planning a day to take the family and kids.
T.
People living in Auckland get in for free and the museum tells you an interesting story. It's a good place to spend an hour or more. I would like to have seen a small café with some seating to encourage more people into the museum and to help bring more people into the museum. Staff were very friendly.
M.
Much bigger than it appears. It has buildings that extend down the wharf. If you go through everything plan on spending a few hours.
I especially liked the info on the Lighthouses, but there is information for all different seafaring aspects of history for the area.
Worth while to bring your kids too. Great family experience.
R.
This is a great museum to learn about the history of New Zealand and the Pacific. If you live in Auckland it is free to get in. A small collection of heritage boats which some can take you on Harbour tours for an extra fee. This is good for visitors, locals, adults and kids. It is also central and easy to get to via public transport. Being in the viaduct there is a great range of places to eat before and after.
B.
Really enjoyed the history and the exhibits!
A.
Wow! I did not expect such a thorough, creative and interesting exhibition... And SO LARGE! My partner and I thought it would be a small museum and wouldn't take too long to go through, allowing us to read through all the descriptions, but oh we're we wrong! It's HUGE! In an amazing way! Definitely allow more than 2 hours to properly go through the exhibit (we didn't even read 1/3 of description). I love that the organisers are so passionate about it that they keep it modern and interesting. Best museum I've been to.
S.
Well worth going. Especially liked stories about lighthouses around NZ. Also saw the Geographic Photo Competition. Wonderful. Glad I went.
D.
This place is HUGE! America's cup info galore, tons on Blake and boats boats boats. Not to mention it is in a great district in town for tourists. Lots of info , tons of info. You could stay here for hours and hours easily a half day experience. There is also an art gallery there as well! Definitely a must visit if you like sailing, americas cup, Peter Blake or maritime history.
A.
Fascinating museum that needs at least 3 hours to do it justice. Especially liked the rocking ships cabin which really transports you into the past. Non NZ should expect to pay a hefty fee to enter, including for kids.
S.
Must see place for Auckland visitors , especially if you love history and museums. Free entry for residents. Lot of boats starting from primitive models to advanced racing boats on display. Detailed descriptions. Models of ships that carried the passengers from Europe to NZ was good, and the interiors are well done.
R.
The boat cruise was fun . A little hard to hear the staff members on the speaker from where we were. They were great with all the kids on board and it was nice getting to be involved raising the sails on the Ted Ashby . Museum was nice and clean and cool.
R.
Sizable museum given the focused theme. Lots of intricate model boats, real boats including race winners, race cups, native designs, tools of the trade, etc. Covered a lot of ground from the early days to modern times. Plenty of games for little ones and resting areas scattered throughout.
I visited with a sailing affectionado who was quite impressed by the selection and level of detail. My personal fave was the immigrant boat which made for a very immersive experience. Couldn't catch the boat tour this time but would like to next time.

It's a haven of sailin. All about ships, boats and sailors from all around the Pacific. A must do for any trip to Auckland is a trip out on the Ted Ashby, leaving from the Maritime Museum, it takes you on a stately tour into the harbour for a sail, wind permitting; the best way to see the city of sails is on an old sailing scow. You can even help hoist the sails! Fun for the whole family, and affordable too.
V.
I'm not a boat person so I think my score would be higher if I was. There is heaps to do here and many of the exhibits are interactive. I liked the America's Cup based activities and it seemed to be something both kids and adults both enjoyed. Lots of historic boats to look at and the history of the maritime side of NZ well documented.
C.
So much to see and interact with. I loved listening to the stories about lighthouses in my comfy chair. I could have spent hours just in that room. My husband and I left after more than a couple of hours so wishing we'd had more energy to keep going! We would definitely return if we ever have the opportunity.
A.
Loved the Museum. It is really well set out and worth the time you spend there!
A.
Great if you like boats
J.
Great place to take the kids (old or young). Lots of things to look and read about. Interactive videos. Remember to take proof of auckland residence address
J.
Amazing collection of boats, tools and documents taking you through history.
V.
Great, but not too big, displays of voyaging to and settlement of New Zealand, first by Maori and later by Europeans. The Not Touch exhibit is fun. World Cup exhibits are extensive. Good use of a few hours, doesn't take your whole day.
D.
There is a wealth of historical information both recent and past that is on display here. From the replica of the cabin of the ship my father came to New Zealand on in 1956 to our most recent history of yachting success. The museum showcases our deep affinity to the ocean and our heritage.
S.
We had a great sail
P.
Magnificent displays and easy to walk layout.
A.
Live this place. Lot to learn from here about old New Zealand
C.
This is a good place to go for an afternoon if your free. The layout is very nice and the galleries are very organized. If you can check out there website and see if you can plan your time around one of their events to make it more interesting.
H.
Me and my partner booked the sailing trip and museum tickets together and we had an amazing time, it was a beautiful day to go out in the sail boat, amazing views and the museum was filled with historic pieces which we loved looking at and reading about.
R.
Awesome museum .. take your time
D.
I didn't get a chance to go through the museum, as was on time limit! But had a look in the foyer and found it very interesting, (educational)! Going by what I saw in the foyer, and what was being shown on the t.v. screen as to what is on display inside the museum, it'll be well worth a visit!
A.
Great way to spend an afternoon in Auckland. The museum has very interesting exhibits presented in a unique way. I really enjoyed seeing the various forms of water transport from different New Zealand peoples.
B.
A must see if in Auckland. Beautifully laid out history of New Zealand from how the early settlers arrived by canoes to the modern immigration and competitive sailing success. Very accessible on the downtown waterfront. Allow 3 hours at least to explore and more if you want the harbor boat tour.
M.
An interesting collection with representatives from all the major time periods. They've put alot of thought into the exhibits with quite a number of interactive displays to keep you engaged. Definitely worth a visit.
J.
This museum showcases how the ancient maori braved the water when they were travelling and hunting. It also display a variety of boats used by the different island cultures like Fiji and Samoa. They also have modern sea vessels and all other kinds of sports sea vessel used by the New Zealand team.
B.
Awesome, fun and interesting place for both adults and children. I hadn't explored here here until recently and wish I had more time. Will definitely be coming back.
Thank you
J.
Managed to spend a couple hours here. Museum is well laid out. From the arrival of NZ first peoples, Capt Cook's arrival, early settlers, immigration, steam boats to the Americas Cup challenges and wins. Museum well located on the Quay, near the CBD. Only thing missing is an onsite cafe, but plenty of cafes and restaurants nearby. Several onsite toilets. Well worth a visit to this museum.
M.
Want something to do on those rainy days? This is definitely on that list. In fact, even if the weather is good because then you can go enjoy lunch at one of the many restaurants in the area. This place works hard to keep their exhibits interesting and really showcases NZ's maritime history well.
B.
It's a nice museum right by the harbor and takes about an hour to walk around.
L.
It's a nice place. They have a few activities in here to keep some kids busy. It's great if you are just curious about the New Zealand waters. Also is a great way to kill time, if that's what you want.
G.
A good museum with lots to see! Found it very interesting, personally did not find the more modern history as interesting and there was quite a large amount of it. Entry is quite expensive but i enjoyed my visit! Worth a visit if in auckland and you like history.
M.
Brilliant day out on the harbour
N.
.
(01/2017)
Easily accessible being located near harbour.
Interesting and well preserved history.
Well maintained.
You need to keep at least 2-3 hours at hand for enjoying the visit.
Service can be hit or miss on a busy day.
J.
This is a great rainy day activity. The museum opens at 10am. It's $20NZ for adults who are not Aucklanders.
The exhibits are fascinating as they show the relationship of water transportation to the people of New Zealand. It's quite extensive so take your time and enjoy.
The gift shop is where you enter and leave, but the prices can be expensive--it's a museum gift shop.
C.
The exhibits were so fun and informative. Seeing the different sail boats and the size of them was the best part. It was a very enjoyable experience for the entire family.
J.
The well presented and lovingly curated museum of New Zealands long marstime history is a great visit. From the early begginings of the island peoples finding and living in New Zealand, though to the European discovery and colonisation of New Zealand.
The layout is fantastic with more than a whole day's worth of things to see. Great for the kids also many interesting interactive activities and videos.
The various models of ships from the early islander canoes up to the large modern ships and America's cup yachts are lovingly presented also.
The gift shop is packed with anything you could need for you souvenirs and tours and daily sailings on the harbour are avalible also.
Make sure to allow at least half a day here as there is allot to see and even if you don't read all the information signs you'll find yourself lost in the collections, fascinated by New Zealands long maritime history.
N.
Go and have a some knowledge about geographically and historically
s.
Great staff!!! Aucklanders are free, other New Zealanders and visitors all had to pay a general admission fee of $20 pp. We wanted to bring our little one to see an exhibition called the knot touch but the staff told us there's not much for the little one to explore so we didn't go in saved us $40. Really appreciate the helpful information.
G.
Answered so many of my questions, like how did migrating people find land. How to read stars. 1520 was first circumnavigation. How Sir Peter Blake was constantly drumming up support. How disgustingly uneatable food was for first colonisers during trip. How using mercury instead of rollers allowed for faster light house blinking, which allowed for better identification of lighthouse. How the ports were developed. How Christchurch Sumner Beach had first volunteer rescue for stranded/sinking ships and saved 900 lives.
Has 2 movies, one with a theatre 1h40min was really informative. You get to see winning boat 4 stories high and walk around it at each story.
Kids section is really great at teaching about plastic pollution. Has 6 easy jig saw puzzles.
Shop has old vertical Skill Ball (like vertical pin ball) machine which Fish & Chip shops had which were a blast to play.
You can go on boat that will take you to Auckland Harbour Bridge and back for additional cost.
Auckland residents are free entry :)
Took me 5 days at 5 hours per day to read everything.
W.
Free to NZ residents, but not so for visitors. It is a really great journey through NZ maritime history and well worth the visit even if you're not that old!! Be sure to go check the NZ version of Mona Lisa. She may be not what you expect!!
M.
If nautical nonsense be something you wish, this is a cool place to check out. Gives a brief history of immigrants to NZ and some of the more traditional boats used by natives. The gift shop has some nice souvenirs to check out, albeit expensive.
S.
Lots to see, kids and adults had lots of fun and learn everything. Must visit if you're in Auckland.
N.
Best guided tour I've been on. Really passionate staff who really went out on a limb to answer our questions and be part of your experience of the museum. You could go self guided, but the guide is free and brilliant.
N.
Love this museum. It is constantly evolving. Every holidays they have great activities for the kids. Close to all public transport. Remember your proof of Auckland address for free entry.
T.
Great place to take the children, it's free if your an Auckland rate payer. Even if you're just visiting there is a lot of interesting items too see.
G.
This is a terrific little museum. One can see all sorts of interesting maritime objects and have a wonderful sailing on the Ted Ashby - a replica scow - or on the Breeze, a terrific barquentine which has a partial square rig and, they let you climb in the rigging. Not to be missed.
R.
Very interesting museum with a lot of different sections for different parts of Auckland Maritime history. Can take several hours to go through if you try to read everything, so plan time accordingly.
J.
Really good! I thoroughly enjoyed the museum. It's a lot bigger than i expected. Some great little boats to look at too!
A.
Right in the centre of Auckland’s harbour area, the Maritime Museum provides a full description of New Zealand’s maritime history from Maori arrival onwards. There are exhibited spread across two floors, plus a number of boats moored (although these can not be boarded). I especially enjoyed the section covering the America’s Cup. There are no refreshments in the museum, but plenty of places to eat in the surrounding harbour area.
R.
We visited for the Chinese New Year celebration activities and looked around at the museum as well. There are a great selection of exhibits that catalogue NZ's seafaring history, including big sailing ships, waka, Pacific voyaging canoe, and retro NZ exhibits. The kids loved the replica Captain's bridge with simulated harbour sailing activity. There is a nice gift shop at the start/end. If visiting in the weekend, the most reasonable and easy parking is in the Downtown Car Park for $2 per hour with an overbridge that exits near the museum entrance. Auckland residents can enjoy the whole museum for free.
M.
A great museum that showcases the history of New Zealand (both Maori and European settlement, as well as the more recent immigrants). It also displays different designs of boats through the generation. On certain days of the week it also runs harbour cruises. Admission is free for Auckland residents.
i.
Great 2nd option if you have been to the main museum too many times.
worth a visit for tourists
Auckland 'city of sails' is all about the sea and the beach so getting in touch with our maritime history makes a good afternoon
A.
The Maritime Museum has a lovely harbour side location. The exhibits span a wide range of vessels from the early settlers up to the Americas Cup win - something for everyone. Exhibitions covering New Zealand's maritime history are well laid out and interesting. There are reproductions of buildings such as a shipping office and the New Zealanders' iconic holiday home (the "bach'). Harbour cruises are available on board a selection of boats. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and would wholeheartedly recommend a visit.
S.
Museum is enjoyed by many of our customers. Tom Rosentreter >>>>> SportsCarRental.co.nz <<<<<
M.
Tons of great stuff to see here -- even if you aren't super-passionate about boats. My favorite part: the moving boat cabin that really puts you into the shoes of NZ's early migrants.
L.
This is amazing - so much to see. So much important to New Zealanders. Very educational and interesting for kids - and husbands! My daughter loved the knot-tying . We lovrd the harbour prints we bought. We will go again!
E.
Went to the Maritime Museum for the first time on a school trip. Cant believe I've never been before, amazing place to see how our ancestors migrated plus heaps of other Maritime displays. A must see. Free entry for Aucklanders.
J.
A bit of a budget feel about it but surprisingly large and cleverly laid out. Rich experience of how Auckland and New Zealand's history with the sea and immigration is tied to the maritime environment. I loved it. Free for locals!
D.
FREE entry what could be better. Great place to check out our Maritime history.
J.
It is much larger and more comprehensive than you may have been led to expect. It starts from the first voyagers to reach the island and progresses through the ages. How some of those small craft survived is a testament to New Zealand's maritime roots.
E.
Bigger than I expected with many good exhibits. I enjoyed the exhibits on immigration and Maori sailing history. However, the place was not well heated and cold in winter.
L.
What a awesome place to explore with friendly staff especially Daniel n team on puke steam boat.We are looking forward to visit again .
A.
Enjoy a sail on one of the heritage boats, they also have a canon thats deployed everyday at noon, there is even interactive stuff for the family to enjoy like the team nz simulator, overall enjoyed visiting here
C.
It is a great, interactive museum, good for kids too. The staff is really helpful. Explains the discover of New Zealand both by Maori and the European people.
B.
The sweetest exhibits around!
f.
nice interactive displays
G.
Lots of New Zealand Maritime history & full size boats. It took me a couple of hours to see everything. I was impressed by the way they took something that could have been boring and made it come to live with great use of multimedia including an interactive yacht race which I saw a group of kids having lots of fun with.
J.
Fantastic time out on the Ted Ashby. The crew were very friendly and informative - awesome volunteers!
R.
Great exhibits and well presented. Very helpful and happy staff. Convenient location in the city of sails. Interesting history of Auckland.
W.
One of the best museums ever visited. We actually spent a good 2 hours there just browsing around . Would love to have tried the sailing trips if not because of the rain
T.
Great museum and the galleries are very interesting. It shows New Zealand's maritime heritage as well as Pacific maritime history. Worth a visit. Free entry for Auckland residents.
H.
This was a nice way to pass the time on the waterfront of Auckland. I learnt a lot about the history of the settlement of New Zealand, and other maritime things that it has been involved with over the years. Well worth a visit if you are in the area.
J.
An excellent museum. Maori and settlers history. Plus modern sailing challenge boats. Loved it here. Much larger than we imagined
H.
The first information about where they come from you will get here
P.
Plenty of NZ history. Lay out a bit confusing. Need improvement on site maps. Good cafe with reasonable prices.
M.
FREE FOR AUCKLAND RESIDENTS! Can't beat that - the history in this museum and the love that has gone into maintaining it is excellent. A must for any boatie or America's cup enthusiast. We even tried sailing on an interactive exhibit.
V.
Good informative place!
L.
Really really great!! Interactive and fun! I have to say, I'm not a fan of anything marine, but this museum by far exceeded my expectation. It's not typical at all.
a.
Fantastic museum, a lot larger than it seems from the front - well worth spending 2-3 hours here to understand pre-european navigation around the Pacific, NZ coastal trading and all of the modern yachting and racing.
I.
Great family activity. Great place to learn Aotearoa maritime history.
P.
Really cool. Long overdue visit...
c.
Beautifully presented showcase of NZ maritime history. There is so much to see, plenty of interactive exhibits too.

Lovely museum where you learn alot on the maritime history of Auckland. There is also a gallery paying tribute to Sir Peter Blake on his contributions to New Zealand. A must go museum, if you are in Auckland.

Super cute and it's free if you're an Auckland resident! Just have proof of address on hand. A nice idea for part of a day out!
C.
Very well organized museum presenting NZ maritime history. It is free to enter if you live in AKL. Need a proof of residence showing shows your home address.
M.
Varied exhibits take you through the maritime history of New Zealand from Maori fishing, European discovery, the mass immigration in the 19th and 20th Centuries (including an innovative cabin reconstruction) through to the modern day America's Cup. Lots to see, well worth a visit.
G.
This maritime museum is well located near the CBD entrance to the Auckland Viaduct harbor where the large yachts are moored. The range of boats etc. is great with racing yachts (KZ1 "Black Magic"), Polynesian craft, a great moving floor that simulates a cabin in the sailing ship days where passengers slept.
M.
For me, it was the Meh-ritime Museum. There are sweet replicas of canoes, and walkthroughs of the lives of early settlers, but I wouldn't say it's a must visit of Auckland. Unless you're really keen on jets and boats, don't lose sleep over missing this place during your visit.
B.
Fantastic displays with options to sail the Harbour on some of the renovated boats owned by the museum. Wonderful Peter Blake exhibit.
D.
What a wonderful museum of old and new Maritime history. Loved spending a couple hours learning about the interesting history of New Zealand and their relationship to the sea and Maritime sports.
