Reviews of Te Uru Waitakere Contemporary Gallery
J.
Te Uru Waitākere Contemporary Gallery is an absolute gem! This is the place to come to if you want to experience new and contemporary art. They change their exhibits and installations often, to make every visit fresh and interesting.
Your personal taste will inform the visit. Some contemporary installation are brilliantly inspired and inspiring, and showcases local New Zealand history and artists. Although I could appreciate the passion and effort that went into creating those works of art, I just didn't "get" some of the pieces.
The building itself is an architectural marvel. It also offers beautiful outside views, displaying the wooded areas and the harbour as art itself.
Well worth a visit!

First time visitor n loved it! Cool exhibits to wander across an amazing building. Spectacular views. Handy cafe below.
N.
I am in love! This gallery is spacious, 5 leveled and filled with stunning, engaging art.
There is even a rooftop terrace to take beautiful, scenic photos and take a moment to admire the nature around you.
S.
I loved this place so much. It’s got so many surprises to discover on the 4 levels. An amazing insight into our NZ history in one gallery too. It was such a breathtaking experience. My fave piece was this teapot & the explanation of its creation
R.
Te Uru is a wonderful contemporary art gallery. Highest recommendation. This is the place to come to in order to experience exciting new art.
The building is a brilliant example of Judy Stout and David Mitchell's architecture. Here's some close up photos of the architecture's careful detailing.
Wonderful staff.
B.
What a great exhibition space! Highly recommend just going in to look out the windows at the view. But the exhibitions are high quality too. Plenty of parking on the street
D.
Gem of a place. Content and building worth a visit. Like Auckland's contemporary art gallery the views to the outside are really something.... trees fantastic.
R.
Beautiful gallery and great staff. Had a great experience here with their latest exhibition. Kids loved the sand
A.
A superb gallery architecture wise with beautiful framed views over the rainforest to the harbour. Contents depend on your personal taste. Some contemporary installation brilliantly inspired by local history. Some other art was merely arranged jetsam and flotsam, so being a cultural phillistine completely lost on me. Each to their own.
j.

Amazing gem of a building out amongst the beautiful community of Titirangi. A great range of spaces with fascinating exhibitions and friendly reception staff to top it off! Also check out the lopdell house next door refreshed and strengthend by the same architectural team it has a great cafe and is a stunning companion piece to the bold Te Uru gallery.
J.
This gallery is phenomenal. The space itself is amazing at every turn. Exhibitions were also amazing, very cool for Titirangi to have this. You can also access the rooftop from the old building next door, worth going in just to see the old school lift and tiles! The rooftop has great views across the Waitakeres
A.
Lovely art gallery :)
G.

Loved yhe show but the poor girl at the door didnt need to have a paper of names of those who got tickets to the show when most had on their phone
N.
Wonderful little gallery, full of odd corners and a great view. The ceramics exhibition on at present is really inspiring, didn't get a chance to see the others but I'll be back.
S.
A top West Auckland gallery. Gorgeous architecture with outstanding exhibits. Check out Deco next door for nibbles or drinks then wander up to the community own upstairs gallery next door.
G.
Well worth a visit - if you enjoy contemporary art and especially if you live in the West
S.
They do pick up some cultural referenced artwork in which explorer more diverse philosophy to the viewers - appreciate it. It has a nice open gallery space - often valuable contemporary art that they show case where I regularly visit. :)

Every beautiful corner is a new instance to surprise yourself and wonder: art or lunacy? Geniuses or nutcases?
S.

A well presented gallery in Titirangi. Not too small, not too big, just the perfect size. The ground floor exhibition room is modern, and the first floor exhibition room is spectacular. Also the view from the entire side wall is just amazing...
C.
A great space. The current exhibition of photos (picturing Asia) is amazing. The staff are very friendly. Some great views from inside the building as well. A real gem

Stunning spot. Great especially on a rainy day - the way the raindrops dance on the glass makes the gallery something else. The old lift is really neat too.

As a former Aucklander now resident in Sydney, but visiting 3-4 times p.a., I read a feature on Te Uru in North&South or wherever in December. A simple short trip on the bus up the hill from Lynnmall set me down in Titirangi village which I had not stopped in for quite a while. Further down the street towards the Scenic Drive roundabout one soon comes to the Lopdell House/Te Uru complex. Once inside the building it is fairly standard modern exhibition spaces spread over 3 or 4 floors, but with the back "stairway to heaven" being virtually an impressive glass wall with wonderful views at the top (in Dec.) over the local blooming pohutukawas and out to the Manukau. The exhibitions on at this time included some Hoteres on the ground floor, the interesting Portage ceramic awards, a Tiffany Singh (McCahon house resident) installation at the top. At the time I visited the roof access seemed only available from the Lopdell House roof terrace, so be aware of that for a wonderful Manukau vista. The exterior of the building has a wonderful copper verdigris finish (but apparently actually aluminium as copper would have broken the budget). This is a truly wonderful regional gallery space and a great addition to the West. I very much look forward to future visits. It is very much worth the trip, regardless of the art inside at the time, even if only to admire the new building.
A.
