Reviews of Torpedo Bay Navy Museum
n. m.
I really enjoyed this. Another area of remembrance that those that gave so much don't get the recognition they deserve.
So nice seeing how ordinary these men were.
I wish there was more to it as with other naval museums around the world but its doesn't appear to be a focus of NZ.
The bonus is the Naval base down the road has a turret from the Achilles and the gun control tower on display. 🙂👍
R. A.
Wow what a hidden gem. A really well presented Museum full of interesting displays and free of charge (donations greatly appreciated). There is also a cool play ground for kids and a lovely cafe for lunch and coffee right on the waterfront, with good parking. Definitely recommend a visit.
J. B.
It was very interesting discovering some of New Zealand's history and conquests. There are items on display, with interactive ipads, and monitors. The monument in honour of the fallen heroes is very moving.
All the staff were very friendly. There is also a lovely coffee shop on site, which allows you to look out over the harbour and the city. There is a playground for younger children
D. P.
Small concise NZ naval museum, quiet on the day we visited due to covid and the boat shed wasn't open gives us something to come back for, also can walk out on the pier to watch people fishing, the old convalescence pool for injured soldiers very moving, tucked into the shoreline alongside.
Worth a visiting as lots to do also nearby
A. K.
A must place to visit while in Devonport. Free parking for Museum and Cafe visitors. Entry if Free, but a donation of $5 at the entry is much appreciated. The staff is great and they welcome and guide the visitors well. The Navy Museum gives insight about the history of NZ contribution in the World Wars. The displays are amazing and well preserved. Kids playing area is clean and fun. The café serves fresh food and coffee. Love the atmosphere and the walk to the boat shed.
R. J.
This is a fantastic little museum about 5 minutes walk from the ferry terminal, just turn right and follow the path along the beach. Its compact displays hold a treasure trove of Navy memorabilia along with a ton of knowledge about each one. From the early 1800s all the way through to modern times, the displays are set out in a story board fashion. There is a knowledge hunt, along with brass rubbing, for the kids and badge making ( for a super low fee); and a nautical themed play park outside. The staff are very friendly and helpful, and it is has free entrance. This is worth a trip to the north shore for, especially if you are into New Zealand naval history.
A. D.
Friendly, helpful staff and well designed exhibits make this a must see in Devonport. Great to see some kids activies on offer too which kept the mini-human entertained !
R. B.
This might be bias as I have a soft spot for museums. But my kids loved it and there is lots to see about NZ maritime history. A nice walk from the ferry.
G. O.
Very well curated and maintained.
Entertaining exhibition with a lot of interesting pieces and informative displays.
Friendly staff, a guided visit is well worth it since they are knowledgeable and nice overall.
A very fun thing to do in one of the rooms is to try real navy uniforms and take pictures in them.
The cafe is very nice and the gift shop has nice items at a reasonable price.
The admission is free but you can donate so they can keep up the good work.
J.
Didn't know this museum has been here so well presented and people can learn about proud NZ naval history.
N. B.
Doesn't seem like much but if you wish to know more about each artifact the staff are very helpful and knowledgeable so feel free to ask them questions.
G. S.
As a collector of WW2 artifacts getting to see this museum was very much a treat.
Displays are well presented & described.
Exhibits are in good condition & span a huge range of time.
I recommend getting in early as the parking is tight & fills up quick.
Take your time & enjoy the exhibits & check out the gift shop for some interesting & affordable souvenirs.
A. S.
Lovely experience enriched with history and information! The best small nation navy indeed, with tales of bravery and honour
F. A.
One of the major highlights of Devonport this naval museum packs a punch with lots of history regardless it's size. The museum entry is free and a good spot to take the kids. Has a nice small park for kids to unwind and stunning views of the ocean and the Auckland skyline. There is also a cafe onsite good for a quick bite and nice coffee. The beach outside only compliments to have a complete family day out. Parking can be found easily.
A.
Very nice museum, especially considering it's free! It's on the small side but the displays are engaging and they have some really great miniature models of the ships. There's also a separate boat shed outside with a variety of boats on display. Didn't try the cafe but it seemed popular.
A. E.
Very cool site to visit. It features stories and exhibitions that do a good job at telling the story of New Zealand Navy's involvement in the war efforts and peace keeping around the world.

One of the best museum sites in Devonport. Terrific displays and very good staff.
Nice café with terrific view of Auckland Harbour.
Recommended for families. An easy walk from the Ferry building at Devonport.
M. R.
Really good displays and friendly staff make the experience memorable
A. K.
A small navy museum, located about 10 minutes walk from Devenport ferry station. Has historic navy equipments. Usually closed on public holidays.
K. S.
A small but very interesting and informative Museum.
It gives you insight on the valour and courage of NZ Navy.
S. H.
The Navey museum has a fabulous insight into New Zealand's history, with wonderful photography & cafe with delicious coffee, food and treats. That also makes you relise just how important our Navy is still today.
F. J.
A quick drop in to view the armed forces photography exhibition - stunning. We were given a personal commentary by the museum guide, Ewen. So welcoming.
Shall come again, thankyou.
G. W.
I found this museum surprisingly excellent. I recommend it for anyone interested in maritime or naval matters. Also, there is an excellent cafe there which serves proper meals, good coffee together with admirable service.
A. T.
Very interesting, even for the boys...
M.
What a great resource to remember our naval and greater armed forces' work though the decades. Free entry is a real bonus.
Worth a visit....and grab lunch at the cafe!
J. T.
Cafe review only: food was excellent, and great view back across the harbour. Some persistent sparrows, but otherwise a really pleasant experience. Really wanted to try the tiramisu cake they had in the cabinet but controlled myself.
A.
Great place to take Grandchildren to learn about the Navy in a fun way with quizzes, being able to touch some of the displays and play on the playground outside! A wonderful scenic place to go have coffee after looking around the Museum! The staff are really helpful and friendly!
R. N.
Great place to visit if you travel or catch a ferry to Devonport, it a casual 10 minutes walk from the ferry, a must for anyone with a naval or nautical interest or anyone on a budget as it is free entry, great display. Coffee shop here as well.
N. W.
Very cool... There was a lot that I didn't know about... Really worth the visit... And the best thing, its free entry
R.
Very interesting place. Not well known. Guides made it come alive. Even managed to get two teenagers engaged in the history. Would have loved more time
P. U.
It's a national, international, educational historical place for every NZ citizens who wants to call Aotearoa their Home Land. There is All you need to know about NZ history, as part of a Library: But this is more Real life, Real people, Real sacrificial with very deep personal impact, to all surviving NZ-landers and their families for all NZ-landers. And this is where the Staff of the Navy Museum; comes in with their immense well informed training and professionalism to help you ponder and feel the souls of the Brave Men & Women who sacrifice their lives for our freedom. These words of mine are not enough, you need to come down to the Navy Museum and see it for yourself. And a Cafe is right there, by the entrance that will take you the extra mile, in and outside a special place for the children as well. A great place well organized and specially design for families and for everyone. A great place to be, highly recommended.
R. A.
For who wants to learn a little bit more of NZ Navy history, this place will give you a lot of information. There's also a free car park, a nice small NZ Navy shop, a lovely coffee shop, a nice sea view and a playground for kids to play. Since everywhere is flat, it's very easy for disable people access.
A. C.
Must go, and please make generous donation to help this museum and veterans.
杨.
Good place for learning new zealand's navy history. entry by donation. Friendly staff, passionate on what they are doing, there is also a cafe to grab a cup of tea or bread after the visit, definitely a good choice for family trip which is educational to everyone and not forgetting to be thankful for all the contribution done by the navy to bring the peace.
A. H. K.
Awesome place to step into on a weekend.. The kids loved the place and so did the adults
R. T.
Small as museums go, but definitely a good spot to visit if you’re into NZ military history. There’s a small gift shop with mainly RNZ Navy items, and a cafe with really delicious looking food. There’s outside seating as well for those that want to look out over the water straight to the Auckland skyline.
N. R.
It was an amazing experience with grandma and family to find out about those who faught for us and the rest for all thse years and my hearts go out to their family's 💜💜💜💜🥰
LOVE and amazing plmace to take families xoxox
P. B.
Fantastic, friendly staff. Lots of detail and some interactive displays and activities to keep kids occupied and interested. Not too big. Great playground outside overlooking the harbor with an awesome cafe and toilets. Parking is tight so make sure you arrive early. Quick drive from here to gun emplacements on the hill behind where kids can climb the massive gun and explore the pitch black underground caves and tunnels. Fantastic day out for big and little children!
S. N.
A wonderful experience. A must do for so many reasons and highly recommended for all. Well laid out and ingormayion easy to access. And the cafe was great for a coffee after two/three hours of wandering through the museum. Lovely food, with many locals using it for their local meeting place. Recommendation enough!!
J. A.
Great place to visit. Donation to get in. Really interesting history. Lovely walk from Devonport
P. C.
Free entry, little playground outside with a very nice dock
D.
The museum is quite small and stingy but contains some very well done exhibitions. I do recommend the actual museum for slightly older kids 10 years of age and above. The cafe is very nice. It has a great view across the harbour and a small play area for kids. The food is nice too.
C. P.
This restaurant has exceeded my expectations.
When we arrived the restaurant was jammed packed full, the waiter found us a table almost in an instant.
We took a look at the impressive variety of the menu and ordered. The Chips and Eggs Bennidict were served in 5 minutes the quickest ever that I have recived Eggs Benedict
Definitely reccomend 10/10
E. B.
Very very interesting, comes with the same feelings as most military museums really - the pictures show very young people heading off to battle and its a bit heartbreaking to know some didn't come home, but it makes you very much appreciate what they did/do for this country. Great museum, recommend if you're out in Devonport
J.
Super friendly service, was shown around the museum, didn't have time for a coffee, will try next time.
R. F.
Underrated little museum in Devonport. Great history and they’re remodelling it mid 2020
D. R.
An amazing trip through the ages and experiences of our Navy. The good and not so good... but celebrating, respecting and acknowledging them all. An awesome location too on the magnificent Devonport peninsula.
E. K. (.
Beautiful. Spent 1-2 hours taking photos of the models. Haven't been to the cafe but I hear it's great. I'm going for a second time today and can't wait! Definitely worth a 5 star.
R. C.
Absolutely awesome place. Being into naval warfare or exploration made it so enjoyable. Also the staff are friendly and it is FREE! Donations are what keeps it running so donate when you visit to keep this amazing place open to the public!
G. K.
This was a well spent half.day taking our time to educate ourselves on the NZ naval history. We even managed to find an ancestor who.lost his life on the Neptune which struck 4 mines. From the historical artifacts ,
the.mock.sleeping quarters to the model ships it was great to see plus the staff were most helpful
H.
Well presented and interesting little museum - worth a visit even if you don't have a naval connection.
C. L.
A great way to spend a couple of hours learning about the navy. Very well maintained and presented, and everyone is super friendly.
F. v. K.
Nice collection and a well told story of the Royal New Zealand navy!
R. S.
Excellent museum showcasing the naval and military history of New Zealand. Great views from the top of the lookout with access to many of the installations used in the past to defend the harbor entrance. An easy walk from the ferry terminal and highly recommended for a nice day trip.
F. W.
Excellent Navy museum, friendly and knowledgeable staff. Good food at the cafe. Highly recommend a visit
M. H.
Free museum showcasing Nz's naval history, well worth a visit
M. C.
Nice museum with some lovely stories and memorbilia. Some dress up for kids and free admission.
J.
Lots to look at and pleasant walk along the shore from the ferry and Devonport shops.
Museum has lots for children and a cafe and playground. Focus is on the NZ navy . Records are kept there of sailors and ships.
S. L.
The museum was interesting however ifound it hard to follow the map provided and the area was quite small with a lot of stuff crammed in, it was nice to walk around especially since it is a free museum. There was a lot of the same/similar stuff which became a bit repetitive but they had model ships which were interesting. The gun collection and larger items were the most interesting and the interactive items which there could be more of. Overall worth a quick visit, avid navy fans could spend hours here!
A. T.
The history, prestige and quality of this museum is one to not be missed. On a beautiful sunny day you can also take a walk down to the little beach just below the parking. Great family morning or afternoon out.
a.
Such a cool place..so many artifacts in a small area. The kiddies were entertained for a good 45min to an hour. Would definitely recommend this place and did I forget to mention that it's free..
K. D.
Well worth a visit, beautiful area with stunning houses and view to Auckland
L. B.
Nicely laid out and good information, but as someone who works in a Museum, some attention is needed in the finer details of a couple of AV elements not working and some lighting not well focused.
Very good to see that alot of the objects have cases visible to smaller kids.
M. A.
Worth a day trip to the shore, as long as you mix it in with other activities. Takes less than an hour to go through (assuming looking at all exhibits) but still a worth while visit, coupled with North Head or a coffee stop in Devonport.
J.
Wonderful experience especially being Anzac Day and rhe opportunity to remember those who gave us the freedom we enjoy today.
S. E.
We loved this museum! Smaller but so interesting. New Zealand shows its pride with the number of museums devoted to veteran history. The walk along the water from the ferry to the museum of spectacular.
R. J.
An amazing museum, on such a picturesque setting, they have very knowledgeable staff who can easily answer any burning questions. There are Japanese and New Zealand guns and a variety of bits from ships from all around the world. Care is delicious and playground is fantastic.
T. N.
A very well presented museum packed with information, photos, video screens, artefacts and you can dress up in naval outfits too! Has a boatshed housing a whaler, clipper & captains boat!!
Lovely café too😋🥰
S. L.
Great museum with some really good models of shops and interesting reading on the various exhibits. Free to enter and spend a while at looking around, then go for a swim at one of the local beaches when you're done.
K. H.
Great museum, cafe service poor, hygiene questionable as sparrows jump around inside and out carrying who knows what diseases and parasites. Stopped cooking at 2.30 pm on the dot even though we were there waiting to order.
O.
A rather adequate museum, whose well curated content seems far larger than the ground footprint space available. There is a lot to see, and I left with a lot to think about. I felt that my time had been well spent in visiting.
O.
Worth for spend half day in here and nearby..
J. C.
Amazing views and the museum is a touching tribute to naval history.

The Naval Museum offers a fantastic insight into NZ's Naval history. The hands on exhibits show a smidge of how tough life must have been but also how much pride was experienced by the crews of the vessels. A must see if your have time in Auckland.

The Torpedo Bay Navy Museum is the official museum of the Royal New Zealand Navy. It opened in 2010, to replace an earlier naval museum. The museum is in Devonport, Auckland. The first Royal New Zealand Navy (RNZN) museum was established in 1974 and was housed in a single room within HMNZS Philomel, the navy's main administrative facility at Devonport. It was only open to RNZN personnel for two hours per week, though groups visiting the base could also view the museum by appointment. In 1982 the Royal New Zealand Navy Museum was moved to a small building on Spring Street at the edge of HMNZS Philomel. This building proved too small, however. On 9 October 2010 the RNZN Museum moved to larger premises at Torpedo Bay in Devonport. It is housed in buildings which were constructed in 1896 to control naval mines at the mouth of Waitematā Harbour. These buildings were refurbished at a cost of $NZ 1.5 million. The exhibits on display at the Torpedo Bay Navy Museum trace New Zealand's naval history since the Flagstaff War in 1845. One of the first displays covers the New Zealand-funded British battlecruiser HMS New Zealand, and includes the piupiu (Māori warrior's skirt) which was presented to the ship's commanding officer during the vessel's visit to New Zealand in 1913. The piupiu was worn by the battlecruiser's captains in battle during World War I as a good luck charm. Displays on World War II cover topics such as the cruiser HMNZS Achilles and the battle fought between the small minesweepers HMNZS Kiwi and HMNZS Moa and the larger Japanese submarine I-1 on 29 January 1943 off the island of Guadalcanal. The museum also has displays on the RNZN's role in the Korean War, Malayan Emergency, Vietnam War, Gulf War, and the current War in Afghanistan, as well as the navy's contribution to the New Zealand peacekeeping force which was deployed during the Yugoslav Wars. Other displays cover the RNZN's peacetime roles of fisheries protection, search and rescue, disaster relief, and conducting hydrographic surveys.
J.
