Reviews of Air Force Museum of New Zealand
B.
great place to visit, whenever you visit Christchurch, it is free but we gave donation as it is well-maintained for it to continue. good for family day and fun for the kids
w.
It's a great place for kids if you need some thing to do on a rainy 🌧 day, as with many good things in Christchurch this is also free to enter 😊
C.
So interesting and immersive, easily spent the whole day, didn’t get to finish and had to come back the next.
M.
A very insightful display of the Air Force collection. A large number of aircraft is indispensable to anyone connected with the Air Force. The museum is very clean and spacious. The cafe there is also very good, serving all important coffee and snacks.
H.
It’s very nice museum to visit with all the old aircraft. Great fun 🤩
B.
It’s free! What a nice way to spend the afternoon. The museum is immaculate filled with stunning planes that have been beautifully restored. There is great information everywhere. For the kids there are cockpits you can play in and a motion capture video game which is fun. We also did the free behind the scenes tour where they take you to the hangers were the planes are being restored. The tour guides clearly have a passion for what they do. Highly recommended coming here if you are in Christchurch and have a few hours spare
M.
What an amazing collection of warplanes! The museum is both comprehensive and unique, in that the airplanes are thoughtfully displayed along with tons of information about their histories and their mechanical and engineering breakthroughs.
We always enjoy air museums that allow you to look inside the airplanes with engine cutouts and other information that help you to understand how the airplane actually flew and why it was effective in the war effort.
There is a great mix of all sizes and eras of airplanes, and there were several very helpful and friendly guides that could answer questions as we walked through.
It’s a “must visit” when you are in the area, especially if you are an airplane/aviation or history buff!
I believe that it rivals even larger museums that I have visited in the US, including the Air and Space Museums, and the Dulles Airport museum in Washington, DC
K.
More here than i had expected. Entry was free, however you can donate if you want to. Quite easy to spend hours here if you're into aircraft or war history. There is things for the kids to do as well so no need to worry about them being bored. Theres also a cafe, and a gift shop to buy memorabilia on your way out.
B.
A great place to spend a peaceful cpl of hours especially if your interested in NZ aviation history. Free entry or donation well worth the visit
R.
Wonderful air craft history to see and be surrounded by. The main room was a little too dark for my child to want to go into. Otherwise very enjoyable experience.
B.
Checked out the new layout in the Aircraft hall. Lighting was quite atmospheric. Nice to see the Avenger displayed with her wings out (for those wondering she was designed for carrier ops so has folding wings)
K.
Initially planned to visit for an hour. I ended up staying for almost 2hours! Joined the behind the scenes tour (ask receptionist what time and yes it’s free too) where you get to see and know more about closed curtain items! So worth it!
The tour guide (sorry I forgot her name but she’s in my picture, she’s knowledgeable and patience. If she doesn’t know anything she will find out for you!)
Loving the interactive items and fun game too. ❤️
S.
This is a must go place in Christchurch if you are an Aviation fan. Being able to take photos as much photos as you want is great opportunity who’s keen to do so.
K.
Really Cool way to fill in an afternoon. Some of the interactive displays were closed because of covid restrictions, but still well worth a visit, a little bit of history preserved.Great cafe and gift shop
B.
On day that brings mild gravity forced moisture this is a great place to pace around contemplating the days gone by of our forefathers and the sacrifice made.
It ranges from stand still exhibitions to a few interactive areas.
Absolutely child friendly with few stations dotting the floors that offer dress ups, coloring in tables, sit and watch videos.
Small Cafe internally allows for a mild mid venture break before opening into the main hanger where the larger aircraft lay in slumber.
V.
What a good feeling. Loved it. You can find lots of parking space in front of this Museum. If you want a relaxing, it has a good cafe and a nice reasonably small shopping center here. Everyone must visit this place when you come to Christchurch.
M.
Loads of planes and helicopters, all really cool.
Interesting, informative, thought provoking. Focuses on the human side of war in the air as much as the technology. All the better for it.
Currently on display is a collection of art created by students at a local school. Some real talent there.
Cafe, gift shop, plenty of parking, excellent accessibility for less able folk. Easy to find and plenty of parking. Look for the plane by the Mobil petrol station.
L.
Awesome! My nephew loved it. Thanks to the staff, they're so nice.
R.
The museum has historic airplanes in a very good restored condition.
It has a lot of space to walk and sit around, it's very clean including its bathrooms.
The staff is very kind and friendly and they have free tours during the day and the access to the museum is free of charge. Very impressive. We were very glad to luckily have stopped by.
K.
Lovely and very informative museum. Definitely worth a visit.
R.
One of the best museums in Christchurch.
The planes, aviation turbines and engines displayed instantly take one back in time.
Most of the artefacts are from the NZ Air Force which makes them more fascinating.
A ton of history is associated with all of them and huge effort has been undertaken to showcase that history too.
It is surprising that the entry is free here and well worth the time spent.
Ideal for spending half a day, kids and adults equally enjoy this place.
There is a café inside which serves all visitors warmly.
The location is easily accessible by road.
Ample parking is available on site.
Highly recommended.
B.
Absolutely loved it! There are free tours at certain times of the day in which you get to see different parts of the museum. Great tour guides as the are really fun and know a lot of facts about the airplanes and other stuff so they can answer all your questions!
Q.
Friendly ex-pilot will greet you with a smile at entrance. You'll learn a lot of history and gain knowledge about nz air force. Kids really enjoy treasure hunt like game with all exhibits. Mosquito Flight Simulator is a not to miss thingy. Great for kids. Love it
M.
Visit the Air Force Museum it is worth it. The military aircraft on display are impressive. Full size aircraft such as a Dakota DC3 and a Spitfire.
The facilities can be hired and significantly sized functions can be held onsite.
There is a cafeteria and restrooms as well as plenty of car parks usually always available.
The Air Force Museum is a definite go and see place if you haven't been there.
I.
Fabulous exhibits but the best part is a free tour guide. These volunteers are the best. I attended a conference here which made for a unique venue. The gala dinner was in the aircraft hall and was spectacular. Plenty to see and do between courses and the dancing!
L.
Very interesting overview of NZ's role in both the Air force and Aviation history. Good range of aircraft from WW1 to more modern. A good kids treasure hunt, as well as a number of cockpits you can sit in and a flight simulator. Cafe was reasonably priced and food was very nice.
R.
Such a great and interesting place to visit. Most of my family have been in the military and flown planes. It was really fun and educational for me, my husbsnd and mist importantly, my 4 year old boy. He could get in to some of the cockpits of the planes. So cool!! Highly reccomened to families and people who like history and aviation.
J.
Amazing place! The kids loved the planes, the engines and doing the scavenger hunt. The staff were friendly and knowledgeable, and we all really enjoyed ourselves. I was really surprised at how big and professional the whole place was. I fully recommend this place even for people not into planes.
J.
It is one of Christchurc's gems, so interesting for the children with many interactive displays and aircraft to climb in to and look at, as for our slightly older, POW breakout room complete with your scenario as to how you you were caught, your everyday life and if you can achieve your breakout.
Awesome and free, would recommend to all!!!
N.
I am pretty much interested in Air force museums to understand the technological aspects. I visited with my family. The entry is free!! You also pre plan birthdays for kids. There is a small canteen and the food is reasonably priced and tastes good.
B.
Awesome family activities for the kids they really enjoyed them selves with heaps of photo opportunities in cockpits of plans so glad I went and will definitely be going back soon
W.
For a national themed museum I expected it to be bigger. Especially compared to many other countries. Also, compared to other international museums of the same theme, I wish there is more to do for smaller kids. There's a few cockpits the kids have climbed in. But other than colouring, there wasn't much for toddlers and pre schoolers. My kids have been in tons of museum, but this one didn't interest them much. But it's a museum with no entrance fee, which I appreciate.
As an adult, I liked the ground floor with the well displayed historical section. I also like how you get to learn more about people on a personal level, rather than just machines. Being from Arnhem the Netherlands, the city which is bombed the most during WWII, I'm surrounded by the WWII history. I found it interesting to learn more about WWII from kiwi perspective.
j.
Very fun place. You must put it to your top 10 place when you are visiting Christchurch.
I.
I guess my 4-stars only rating comes from the fact I saw the Canterbury Museum (5-stars) right before this one so my expectations were high. This is a very good museum with lot's of good stuff and information, but I probably expected more exhibits and a bit less text. Also they were in a process of rebuilding a few exhibitions so half of hangars weren't open. However it's still a good plece to visit especially with kids.
G.
One of the finest air museums I have visited. Great collection, fabulously maintained, outstanding layout.
R.
Fantastic really good tours and so much to see, all the more impressive that there is FREE entry, I made sure to give a contribution, really nice and reasonably priced gift shop too
B.
Though it is free entry, this museum displays lots of airplanes with gorgeous atmosphere. There is a game which operates airplanes and my kid love and keep playing it again and again.
If you have time, it is worth visiting.
J.
I have given a 5 star as the place was very clean and everything was placed well that it did not create a back up in movement around the displays. Items are well lit to take photos and easy access. Found the gift store reasonably priced and organized. Recommend giving place a visit and honour our fallen.
J.
Awesome place to visit! Great planes, great historical descriptions, and a little family friendly interactive POW experience.
C.
Awesome place to visit. Took my 2 1/2 year old boy and he had the time of his life and best of all its free!
S.
Air Force Museum of New Zealand in Christchurch. National museum for the Royal New Zealand Air Force and New Zealand military aviation. The collection is very diverse and includes aircrafts and objects covering New Zealand military aviation in World War One.
If you are an aviation enthusiast this is a must visit place. You need at least 2 hours to cover everything. There's a cafe, gift shop and amenities available.
F.
You are the big fan of Air Force or war memorial
This is your must visit place
It display heaps of aircraft from World War I to late 1990
You can join their free tour too which runs few times a day.
s.
Great place to bring young kids. Spacious indoor for kids to run around. There's a gift shop and cafe onsite. Ample parking space outside. Disable access and pram access.they are currently renovating the museum so there's are constructions onsite.
K.
Went to see the penguins and it was great although the 2 year old grandson liked the machines and planes best, something for everyone. Coffee very good, food average
V.
Experienced the Van Goh Alive which was wonderful. The staff were very friendly and clear with their instructions. Had lunch at the Cafe and very good options for the three of us. Staff were helpful and friendly as well at the Cafe.
C.
Let you know the brief history of New Zealand Air Force. Many airplanes are displayed. An interesting Museum. Most important, free entry.
J.
Good place to learn more about the history of Royal New Zealand Air Force without spending a dime.
г.
Lots interesting things to see. Free admission but i think it deserves a donation before you leave.
S.
It was an awesome visit here. This place is full of Airforce during WW2 and later. It will be an inspiration for youngsters to join Airforce.
J.
I was like a big kid. And so was the Old fella. Fantastic museum and definitely recommend it
L.
Great and free(!!!!) museum. We were there for hours. The café is worth the trip alone with a mouthwatering (if necessarily limited) range of cabinet and hot food. Great coffee and superb service.
The staff throughout the museum are incredibly friendly and helpful. Will be a regular haunt for me and my kids.
R.
Very interesting for adults and good for the kids with their $6 hunts around the museum where they get a small prize at the end.
Q.
Wonderful surprise! Interesting, well presented exhibits, and interactive installations. I spent all afternoon here, and still need to go back to finish!
U.
Awesome as always. Highly recommend you go on the free behind the scenes tour.
G.
Great place to visit, the volunteer stuff very helpful, knowledgeable and friendly. Lots to see and make sure you are there for the free tour.
A.
Great experience for all ages. They have a cafe on site that stocks some Fairlie Bakehouse Pies. Also a museum shop that caters for aviation themed gifts.
C.
Awesome place to go when I was growing up. Always had a lot to do and is awesome for people going there for their first time. Sadly though, has lost a bit of the 'wow' factor as some much loved exhibits have been taken down in the past few years. But still, is an absolutely amazing place to go. More amazing that it is free ( even though donations are recommended ). Looks as though they might be extending the walkable hanger space... maybe some more new planes being exhibited soon?? Exciting times ahead!! Can't wait.
T.
I was part of NZ Bike Expo 2017 which has been organised in Air Force Museum of New Zealand. It’s a great place to organzine events
R.
Great place to take the kids for free . Informative and educational
M.
Went to Alive - Van Gogh experience. Phenomenal insight into his torment and internal struggle.
B.
Great service, Allan our tour guide was great and there was ample parking. The displays were well made and parking great but the cafe was aweful, miss it if you can. Bad food and a limited menu, most food was not in cabinets even though it was a quiet morning and staff stuffed up our order and gave food that wasn’t ours and took ages to prepare meal.
Overall the museum was great and my family loved it but the cafe is a dive and everyone should steer clear of it
C.
Free entry amazing aircraft and you CAN play around with some of it! What else can be said? Go on check it out right now - and buy a t-shirt or leave a donation they really deserve it!!
O.
A really interesting Museum with tons of information. Also had a lot of planes to look at. Loved it!
J.
Amazing place! Definately also do the tour- more to see! Thx Ray for a great tour!
N.
I had a really nice experience here, the planes and engines they have on exhibition are fascinating and interestingly written about. I recommend taking the tour at 1.30, we were shown around by a lovely man who showed us behind the scenes and where the planes are refurbished which was awesome. There are wonderful people who are volunteering their time to this place and I think they're doing an excellent job.
D.
5/5 Stars! Such a great experience, I couldn't believe I had not visited sooner, great facility, guided tour was interesting and held the attention of myself and my 5 year old daughter, highly recommend! oh and it's free!
A.
Highl recommend it. Free museum, amazing spot to enjoy, fan or not fan of it, very enjojable. 10/10. No many people visiting the museum and there is a lovely recepcionist who will help you to understand the place.
J.
A stunning piece of NZ history. The stories are poignant, simply told and the aircraft carry well founded fame throughout the world. Interactive games for kids (and young at heart) as well as cafes and souvenir shop. This museum can hold children's parties complete with goody bags. Not to be missed.
B.
Awesome place here! Had lots of activity's for kids and lots of interesting models and things around the place. I think that although they keep the place tidy and all of that, some of the models have a potential to hurt kids and the staff aren't very friendly. They don't tend to talk or when they are standing trying to explain something to someone that they don't really care about what they are talking about. But I would recommend if parents know a little about that kind of stuff but if the parents don't know much I don't think that there is a lot of point.
B.
The Air Force Museum has a great amount of history on show as well as some iconic aircraft. Entry is free but there is the options to pay to see even more. There are serval interactive exhibitions which can keep the kids entertained for a while. The cafe was reasonably price and had a good selection to choose from
P.
How fortunate we were to have a tour all to ourselves with Roy this morning. Roy you brought the wonderful collection of aeroplanes, engines and spare parts to life with your friendly, knowledgeable and generous manner. It truly made for a 5 star trip around the museum for my wife and I. Thank you Roy, keep up the incredible volunteer work!! Phil and Hayley
C.
New displays since my last visit. Also saw a retirement of a P3 fly over which was the icing on the cake.
J.
Excellent attraction for all ages, great collection of ex airforce planes, including Skyhawk, Spitfire, Mustang, Aermacchi and more.
Great cafe and they have a huge hall which is awesome for events.
Staff are mostly volunteers with a few great stories to share.
Recommend paying a little and doing the tour too.
G.
Amazing and modern museum . Friendly and helpful staff .
Free entry!!
K.
Like the place. It'd be boring if there's no cabins you can sit and play a pilot.
J.
Kids will love to watch airforce, n they will be introduced bt all the information
H.
Must see activity. Historical and make us respect more about the peaceful world that we live in now.
B.
An great place for a visit with the kids
J.
Good experience to see all real aircraft used in war!
L.
Super fun and I mean it free great place to go.
C.
The A Team of volunteers were great - loved chatting with them. Disappointed that there was no mention of Airwomen or displays thereof.
S.
Everything is stunning. I've visited many, many times and the garden/entrance is always perfect. The history of the area and items inside always surprise me and is perfect on a rainy day. The behind the scenes tour is amazing and almost everything is free. Of course the giftshop is slightly expensive but that is the same evwrywhere. Also kids love the simulation located on the second floor.
G.
Brilliant
R.
A nice place to understand the history of Air Force NZ
K.
Lived in Christchurch all my life & never visited until today with my 9yro son, great museum really enjoyed it, friendly helpful staff too, throughly recommended!!
A.
Free entry, free must do behind the scenes tour. Great staff, just Great!
G.
Loved it! Was a bit dark in the hall, but awesome seeing so much of history in the air & land captured in one place.
G.
Great venue to visit when the covid levels change.
Very interesting great displays parking and food available
G.
Amazing place with good people to show you around, Please don’t forget to donate as it is charity
D.
Went with three boys and they had a wonderful time. It was very interesting for the adults too! Good amount of interactivity to keep everyone engaged.
t.
Wasn't really expecting too much on arrival but this museum is fantastic with interactive play for families with children (and bigger children too 😉)
Was a fantastic experience. And free entry!! I recommend you attend and well worth donating to.
S.
We went there to see the Van Gough Exhibition which was fantastic, awe inspiring. The Museum was a great place to hold this Exhibition, but we'll be back to look at the other exhibits displayed there soon
m.
Great history journey. Well presented and interesting for all ages. Super cafe for refreshments. And have a birthday party air force style.
J.
Always an awesome experience. Great exhibits. Love it.
A.
Was really good, some interactive displays. Free entrance
D.
Great museum, with quizzes and exhibits children (and adults) can interact with. Our 3 yo and 8yo were both entertained for a couple of hours.
R.
Went to see pop up penguins, great display, good place to have it. Cafe needs to be bigger with more staff and more food options when popular exhibits are on.
S.
Excellent place to visit and see a wide variety of aircraft and learn more about NZ. Great cafe with great food. Venue is clean and well presented, a credit to the personnel. A good experience for adults, teenagers and young children, so ideal families. Try some of the extra activities and tours offered. My son had a birthday party there years ago and the kids loved it, jumping out of planes and in an area that the public would not otherwise see. Well worth a visit by locals or visitors
G.
Brilliant as a freebie attraction. Some stunningly restored aircraft and great little experiences for the little ones. Fab 1/2 day.
J.
They were doing some additions so it was not fully open. We had a conference there and the space was great.
Would like to go back as tourist in a few years time
T.
The behind the scenes tour is great.
M.
I ordered a beautiful navy scarf with poppies on it from the Air Force Museum. It arrived very quickly and the staff dealt with an issue I had in a very friendly and efficient manner. Very highly recommended!
M.
Lunch in the cafe was delicious, great service and able to socially distance easily. One of our group was from a retirement village and she was delighted to have our table well apart from the general public. Thank you
R.
The most interesting museum in Christchurch! Love it!
A.
Excellent display of RNZAF history. Free admission, friendly staff, and a good gift shop. Worth a visit
R.
This museum is amazing. Missed it last trip, wasn't disappointed at all. Huge collection of vintage aircraft and great displays. We spent a little over 2 hours, could even do more time here. . Spread out very well, across 2 levels, worth the trip here. Great for kids as well. Has a unique gift shop and Cafe.
M.
My wife just went to the van gogh exhibition at wigram and told me that it's a great venue for such things
Me well I've been to the museum itself and both times were very impressed with the place
I would highly recommend it as a place to see
Oh and the Cafe is very clean and food is good quality and fresh
But like all touristy things can be a bit hard on a person pocket if living on a budget
Definitely don't let that stop you from going
Just plan a bit if feeding the family there
j.
Great experience, the tour is definitely a must
T.
Absolutely awesome. Interesting. Very clean
G.
A good place to wonder around to see all the old vintage planes and air ships plus have a coffee or something at the end..
J.
Pretty good place. Great that its free. Didn't like the lighting in the room where all the planes where
E.
A great place to visit and it is free. You can't get better than that. Be sure to take the guided tour if you get a chance. You see things that a general walk around misses. Give yourself plenty of time
C.
A great place to visit. My 7 and 5 year old loved the scavenger hunt.
D.
This museum is free entry with a gift shop, and excelent for aviation lovers of all ages. Plenty of aircraft!
P.
There's lots of different aircraft from different decades. It's free to get in, but they do take donations. Make sure to time it right to get on one of the behind the scenes tours. You'll see more aircraft, engines, and equipment on that extra tour.
S.
Great time out for the family. Expect to spend about 2 hours there.
Our guide Don was amazing and his inside knowledge made the difference. The flight simulator was a lot of fun. The exhibitions of WWII fighters (Spitfire, Mustang and Avenger) are great.
There is a bit maintenance going on with the replacement of their exhibition hall roof.
C.
It's a great space for roaming and taking in information about airforce history. The actual planes are awesome.
J.
Excellent place to visit building is beautifully done spent 3hrs. The tour was informative and fun. Cafe was clean with excellent food. Gift shop had good quality stuff. Will definitely go back when in Christchurch again best place I've been couldn't fault it right done to all the staff. My 16yr old son raved about it.
S.
An underrated gem.
The RNZAF museum is a thoughtful and tearfully presented collection of RNZAF memorabilia. And it’s free! Well worth a couple hours of your time, suitable for young and old.
S.
Great place to visit. The people were amazingly knowledgable. Make sure to allow time to go around the museum. Enjoyed it.
A.
Kids loved the quizz was great to have options for their different ages to keep them looking
P.
I've been here many times and each time it seems to get better. Of course it's best if planes/Air Force is your thing, and quite honestly i could stare at the Tiger Moth in the foyer for hours. It's great though, awesome place to take the kids or spend a rainy afternoon..
B.
Amazing place haven’t been here in years lovely just lovely 10/10 would go back and it’s free which is amazing!
A.
Thoroughly enjoyed this visit. My father was an airforce engineer gave us a run down on the planes made no sense then but it does now many years later.
M.
Cool place , to much planes and helicopters
S.
Great free fun for the kids, good rainy day option.
B.
This is a hidden gem! I was sure I would be bored and ended up loving every minute of it. Besides an awesome display of aircrafts and memorabilia, there was lots of history and personal stories. I loved all the figures from across the ages with their personal stories. One of the best museums I have been to!
A.
Such a wonderful time to be had by both young & old here, from observing all of the planes on display through to the behind-the-scenes tour (which is a MUST DO) this museum is beautifully displayed and is a true asset to the city. The staff are passionate and willing to share their expansive knowledge of the history that lies both in the museum itself and the displays. Ensure you have several hours at least to truly take it all in, and try the Flight Simulator for an amazing experience at what it was like to fly some of these planes! Thanks for a great time, we will be back!
P.
Did tour with very friendly Gent. Layout good could do with more planes. Lots of information. Could have spent all day there.
A.
So cool! They have so many models and currently they have different figures from every year of service telling their stories. The prisoners of war exhibit was fascinating. Amazing. Allow at least an hour and a half as we went right before it closed and had to rush through the upstairs part a bit.
S.
Great show of penguins, last day on show, airforce collection on show to
L.
Great place to go. SNF its all free
A.
A nice place to visit with family and get a glimpse of aviation history and New Zealand's role in the wars.
M.
A nicely designed (and free - donation invited) museum with a good range of aircraft. Lacks a good play area for younger children, and the interactive 'escape' exhibit is pretty bland, but otherwise a good afternoon's trip. They have a couple of aircraft cockpits that you can sit in and they do great parties for kids, including dressing up in pilot overalls, etc.
J.
An intriguing addition to aircraft museums which provides a useful and interesting insight to the roles of New Zealand aircraft from World War 1 and onwards. Interactive simulations coupled with a gift shop lined with aircraft clothing , merchandise and model kits make for a captivating and memorable experience that can be enjoyed across all ages.
J.
Really interesting and informative displays. Staff are friendly and helpful, especially in the café.
S.
Amazing collection of War planes in one place. Also very well maintained. To top it they have a cafe with wonderful donut and cream which my 4 year old loved
R.
Fantastic exhibit! It showcased a lot of air crafts made during the wars along with their specifications. Many historical artifacts are kept here to tell the story of how World War 1 began and ended. There is also a nice little cafe inside the building with some excellent dishes for a good breakfast or brunch!
A.
Unbelievable, so much there and free! we spent a good few hours wandering around the exhibits,so interesting and the volunteers who man the museum are so interesting, we actually was speaking to the son of a pilot who's plane engine is an exhibit. the Anne frank section was hard breaking, so informative.
S.
Great free outing with the kids. It's a museum, allow an hour or maybe two for younger children, but for those interested in the lovingly restored exhibits it's a fascinating place. Wear a jumper on cold days... the hanger can be chilly!
M.
It's well worth going there for the day. The exhibitions were really well put together & very informative. The airplane hangar was the icing on the cake for my boys & hubby. The whole family enjoyed it. The cafe was pricey though.
J.
A great museum. Far more than we expected. The displays are modern and right up to date. Many of the team worked on the airbase while it was active so can offer great insights. Free entry, however the museum operates mostly from donations so they are encouraged.
S.
The display are great!, Feel like stepping back in time!
the experience ended too quickly though
I wish there are more aeroplanes and more things to see.
Love the Simulator, just couldn't get enough of it.
J.
The free tour is excellent letting you go to restricted areas to see what is going on. Plenty of cockpits to clime in for kids and some interactive things like the mosquito simulator. Some very informative displays too
U.

A must see for any air craft buff, so much to see and it's free, the behind the scenes tour is definitely a must do.
S.
Great bit of aviation history made fun and enjoyable for the whole family
S.
Been here twice. Once for the Christchurch Art Show 2018 and the other time to attend another show they had put up. Both times, the experience here was amazing. Feels so good to be so near the helicopters and I really really wish that there's some way for common people to have a chance to ride in them. One of the times I'd been here, the heli was pretty busy taking and dropping off families of employees and there's never been another place I so fervently wished I could have worked in. I think organizing more events of different communities and cultures would help people to get to know this place much more.
S.
Not so big but don't cost any money. Nice to get in of you're around.
I.
First class museum made sure this was top of my list of places to visit during my time in Christchurch. Not disappointed, be sure to take the tour, guides are great and you get to see behind the scenes, great little cafe and very friendly staff.
D.
This is a really cool, quiet museum that would be easy enough to overlook, but you'd be missing out if you did! The planes are all cool to see, and the descriptions for all of the memorabilia tell a great story of New Zealand's aviation history. Admission is free and they are open until 5pm each day. Go Air Force!
s.
Fantastic and kids have so much fun
M.
Great place to spend a couple of hours. Easy to walk around and view informative and interesting exhibits. Great coffee shop and free - donations welcome . In middle of upgrading. We'll go back if we can in a couple of years to see even more exhibits
K.
Fabulous place for a kids party. Amazing staff and all had a fantastic time.
K.
Great place to go and wander around, take time to see everything don't rush your experience. Needs maybe a little more interactive exhibits for younger children. Great that it is free to take grandkids to learn about our past, very important that they understand what past generation gave for this country.
J.
By far the best attraction Christchurch has for children.
Fantastic atmosphere, very friendly staff and lots of seating available. They even have free chargers for phones!!
Lots of areas for kids to explore, the dark hangers with the aircraft is really something else if you're not used to it!
Well worth a look if you're in town or passing through
S.
It's free! One of the most interesting museums I've been to in New Zealand and I would have never chosen to go there without the suggestion of someone else. Very majestic displays and an abundance of information and remembrance of past pilots.
G.
Totally awesome..not to be missed..was great explaining all the history to our grandies..will go again..and the grandies want to go back too...aged 10 and 6!!
C.
Cool, free museum with a lot of planes and interesting facts about the NZAF and what it was like to be a pilot during the war. Some parts are quite interactive, kids and adults will love it! There's a fun flight simulator ($6 for 5min).
E.
Great place to bring the kids! Lots of different aircrafts on display and the exhibits encapsulates the historical events the Royal New Zealand Air Force were involved in.
There's also a cafe and they also host kids' birthday parties.
Very child-friendly place and one that we keep going back to on a regular basis.
U.
Plenty of interesting planes, helis and equipment to check out. Even had a retired air force pilot take us on a tour, he was genuinely passionate about aviation which made it much more fascinating. And all of this was free
Z.
Amazing experience, free entry, free tour, lot of airplanes and interesting information
S.
Was there for a work event. Our work used one side of the museum to host 116 High school students. Cafe is great & so is the atmosphere. 🖒 The history in there is rich and so is the experience of being able to see the range of planes and stories behind each one.
M.
One of my favorite place. The museum provides comprehensive guide to New Zeland aviation history, especially RNAF.
N.
The entrance is free, but this is really worth it to give a small donation.
Absolutely worth to stop here.
M.
Lunch in the cafe was delicious, great service and able to socially distance easily. One of our group was from a retirement village and she was delighted to have our table well apart from the general public. Thank you
D.
Took my 4 year old son and we both enjoyed the experience
G.
Wonderful place, where we can see air plane. Good :-)

One of my favorite place. The museum provides comprehensive guide to New Zeland aviation history, especially RNAF.
R.
This museum is amazing. Missed it last trip, wasn't disappointed at all. Huge collection of vintage aircraft and great displays. We spent a little over 2 hours, could even do more time here. . Spread out very well, across 2 levels, worth the trip here. Great for kids as well. Has a unique gift shop and Cafe.
a.
excellent venue for a family outing in a peaceful setting
Friendly knowledgeable staff.
Lovely cafe .
Parent pocket friendly.
L.
Great displays to view, make sure that you have plenty of time on hand to quietly wander around.
g.
Wow - this place is not only impressive, it is also free. Incredible display of planes and history of the Air Force in NZ. There is a lot to see and read if you want to spend the time.
J.
Was expecting a reasonable collection of aircraft. Totally blown away with what they have on display here. Be sure to take the free tour to see more aircraft not on general display. Friendly helpful staff too.
C.
Absolutely brilliant museum and friendly helpful staff too. Had an amazing time here in the school holidays. Great facilities, cafe was nice. Highly recommend!
D.
From a non-museum person this place is worth a visit. Interactive school hol program was running which looked really good for the kids
J.
Wonderful display of war birds.
S.
Lovely place to visit, helpful people who had time to explain stuff, very clean and tidy 🙂
G.
Wonderful place, where we can see air plane. Good :-)
Y.
I come here at least once a year, not to visit the museum but to attend Arise Church service who has the Sunday service once a year when they could not use the hall at Burnside High School where they have it every Sunday.
At least 3 jets park inside the hall. Looks good.
F.
Amazing collection and incredible that it's free. Wonderful guide tour from Ray. Don't miss this!
S.
Amazing place so much thought energy money and time has gone into this place and to be completely free of charge to explore so much of air force history i will definitely keep coming back to this place as long as its open kids and adults love it! The Air Force Museum of New Zealand, formerly called The Royal New Zealand Air Force Museum, is located at Wigram, the RNZAF's first operational base, in Christchurch, in the South Island of New Zealand. It opened on 1 April 1987 as part of the celebrations for the RNZAF's 50th anniversary, and is primarily a museum of the Royal New Zealand Air Force, its predecessor, the New Zealand Permanent Air Force and New Zealand squadrons of the Royal Air Force. The Air Force Museum of New Zealand's mission is to preserve and present the history of New Zealand military aviation for commemoration, learning, inspiration and enjoyment. The Museum holds the national collection of the Royal New Zealand Air Force. The collection includes objects covering the early days of New Zealand military aviation both prior to World War I and during this major conflict, the interwar years which saw the formation of the RNZAF in 1937, New Zealanders who fought in the RAF and in other Allied air forces during World War II, the RNZAF's campaign in the Pacific, and the post-war period to the present day. The collection also includes objects from former enemy forces, aircraft, aircraft components, aircraft engines, large objects, textiles, art and memorabilia as well as an extensive paper and photographic archive. The Museum is free admission. Visitors can take a half-hour guided tour through 'behind the scenes' areas of the Museum, which includes the Reserve Collection hangar. The Museum's most recent restoration project, an Airspeed Oxford, is now on public display since February 2016. The Museum also has a Mosquito Flight Simulator, which features a mission based on the Allied bombing of German battleships in the Norwegian fiords.
M.
Museum which shows New Zealand airforce history. There's a good collection of old war time planes that are well maintained. Entrance is free but donations are welcomed. Facilities available for people the disabled. There's a cafeteria and gift shop in the lobby.
S.
The Museum itself fantastic, so much so that I feel bad giving 4 stars. Its a must visit.
What let's it down one star is the cafe, it's run by the council owned Vbase and has the typical problems of Vbase catering - the staff are clearly underpaid and undertrained which shows up in the service. Last time we went it was busy so the cafe staff were over flustered and screwed up our order which ended up leaving us with a hungry child in meltdown as he had no food.
Putting the cafe aside, it's a great place. I can't think of many things around that are this good AND free for children to do.
V.
A really cool place to visit for anyone who likes planes and appreciates history. You will find a massive selections of planes and helicopters on exhibit with their history explained as well. Free entry!
C.
Fascinating displays of Air Force history including a range of old and new planes. Can't go past the fact that it's completely free and it's a classic place to take your kids especially on a rainy day
C.
A great place to visit for an insight into NZ military history. Unfortunately I think it houses the entire air strike force these days 😀Some great exhibitions and a amazing place to hold a function. Been to a couple of events there.
T.
This place has a ton of cool displays and the whole family had a good time. The main hangar area is also great for photography. The lights are low and everything is very moody.
C.
The kids love visiting the museum. Exhibits are stunning and informative. Always something more to learn and exhibits rotate with new ones or new ones added. A comprehensive view of NZ air force history.
S.
Well maintained museum with lots of exhibits and free WIFI. Free entry is an additional bonus. Lots of planes to see and lots of history to read.
E.
I got a behind the scenes tour of see how the volunteers restore classic, historical RNZAF aircraft. It is free and my one took place around 11pm. Especially great for av-geeks and engineering enthusiasts alike.
Main museum well laid out and tells the full story of the RNZAF, so it's not just a bunch of aircraft in a hangar.
See the memorials and commemorative areas for all the service men and women who have dedicated their lives to their country and for flight.
The guide (Ex-RAF engineer) is a cheerful, chap! Good stuff 👍
I.
A must see attraction in Christchurch if you are into aviation. Good cafe, knowledgeable staff, really good historic displays. Kids love this place. Great parking.
J.
This was a top quality museum and free to boot. Even got a top quality tour guide genuinely interested in the exhibits take us right round. All of this for free would definately recommend.
D.
Took my 4 year old son and we both enjoyed the experience
M.
This visit was for the last CSO masterworks concert of the year. I could review the concert (which was superb) but I want to cover the venue on this occasion. From the lighting behind the stage to the ambience of having aircraft all around to the sparkling wine pre concert I found this to be a great occasion, not just a great concert.
D.
A nice museum, with a lot to see and do. Besides airplanes and the history of the NZ Air Force, there are also topics presented of what it was like to be captured as a prisoner by the opposing site during WOII. All of this for the price of $0 (yeah it's free ;-) ).
A.
Great place to spend a couple of hours with the kids and learn a bit history
D.
Absolutely loved my time here.
Z.
Quite an informative museum, with many retired planes on display as well as exhibits regarding the history of RNZAF, such as in the two World Wars.
Might've been nice to see models of more recent planes, I guess, but it's free admission anyway -- if you're free and you're interested in aviation, you can always hop by and take a gander.
T.
Well constructed and a visual feast for those into military aircraft particularly those that had been in service with the NZ Airforce.
A lot to see and even hands on stuff for the adults.
If you've into anything military and in Christchurch then do yourself a favour and call in as it more than justifies the time spent.
You can even get there by public transport and a short walk with free entry even the tight-wads can go.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
R.
It is a great museum. Many aircrafts in exhibition as well as materials and accessories of past members of the air force.
R.
Would definitely reccomend the guided tour. You get to see more planes behind the exhibition hall. One of the best air force museum I've been so far.
T.
This place has an incredible amount of things to do, so many things too see. I would highly reccomnd a free guided tour, the tour guides know their stuff and you get to go behind the scenes which was great!
D.
Really loved this place...
We had an awesome guide...and the stories behind the planes and the base are truly spell binding
I couldn't recommend strongly enough as a fantastic place to come and learn about the history of flight
G.
Great museum, showcasing the NZRAF love to see all the planes, easy to walk round, good wee cafe.
n.
The museum staff are so friendly knowledgeable and helpful and museum exhibits are very well executed...the mosquito flight sim was pretty uninspiring...must be some more up to date software...milkshake i had at the cafe was weak and flavourless...tour guide was outstanding
F.
Took my family and grandkids yesterday, we all loved it, we all got a new experience, staff obviously love their jobs. Highly recommend.
B.
Wigram Air Force Museum, I was last here when the eco fair was on & after exciting the scrum of people @ the fair I went to the low benches by the lift & sat myself down in the sun & relaxed.
The museum's shop is just to my right & straight ahead is the cafe & both appeared to be doing business & there were still people moving in to have a look @ the extensive museum found towards the rear of the entrance area.
If you haven't been to Wigram Airforce Museum do so it's worth all the time you have & maybe a bit more.
M.
Had a great time loved the history of military aviation and stories from soldiers who served my brother bought some military badges which we will both were with pride...and its also good to see that its free entree....will pop in again sometime and enjoy the cafe hot chocolates...😁😃
M.
A must for the lovers of plane and history.. Very great guide, Mr. Allan, a real veteran who experienced the airmen life in this air base before.... Thanks Mr. Allan for the stories and showing us around.
D.
Wow, it is incredible! Absolutely fantastic. Would highly recommend to anyone. The Mosquito simulator was the highlight for me, possibly the best $5 I've ever spent!
J.
Great historical place
A.
The kids love visiting. It's not huge but everything is very tidy and we'll presented. There's enough interactive stuff to keep the little ones engaged
A.
Good historical museum about nz airforce
k.
Was disappointed they moved aircraft from the main display to day. Less aircraft to look at. My north island companion was disappointed.
C.
If it's your thing it's well worth a visit. Not really into Military stuff myself but if you were it's of great interest. Stuff for kids too. Entry by donation.
G.
Great museum
Salute to all Nz forces
G.
Very much worth a visit.
O.
It's free! You get to se a lot of different air planes and you get a good back story of the New Zeeland peoples involvment in the wars. The only thing I think could be improved is more common knowledge about the wars. Not just the New Zeeland perspective. It felt a bit to patriotic for a non New Zeeland resident
M.
The Air Force Museum of New Zealand is located at Wigram, the suburb that housed the Royal New Zealand Air Force’s (RNZAF) first operational base. It opened during the RNZAF’s 50th Anniversary celebrations on 1 April 1987, with the mission of preserving the history of New Zealand’s military and aviation. The museum consists of six different buildings and its collection comprises historic relics from local aviation efforts as well as objects obtained from former enemy forces.

A large open museum with a good selection of exhibits, both memorabilia and whole aircraft. There was only one reproduction that I could find (a Sopwith pup) there is a range of aircraft on display from first world war to the last jet trainer the RNZAF used .(an aero macchi)
G.
