A.
We love the art gallery in Christchurch. It's a smallish place, but they use the space so well. There's always something interesting to see and it's frequently great for kids.
D.
The Ōtautahi - Christchurch art gallery - Te Puna o Waiwhetu is awesome and 100% worth the visit if you get to the city. With regular updated exhibitions and an amazing regular collection it really is a jewel in the Christchurch City Council crown. One to put on the itinerary for sure. Amazing gift shop too. Beautiful modern building to top it all off.
M.
There are many interesting traditional and contemporary art exhibitions. Very interesting art exhibition. Even if you are not an art lover, it is definitely worth a visit. ...
H.
I'm not really into art galleries but I enjoyed this one. The staff were really friendly and knowledgeable. It's not too big so you can get around it and not be bored with sore legs at the end.
K.
Beautiful gallery, a great place to go alone or would make a great date, there's some fun things for kids too
T.
Manageable size, free, and filled with interesting contemporary exhibits. Really enjoyed the Max Glimblett exhibit. Great way to spend a few hours.
S.
Something to experience about art. Not a giant art gallery, a quick peak in and out. If your lucky to be on time for the free guided tour, make the visit worthy. No entry fee. But a mindful donation is always great for keep a facility running
G.
Great exhibitions. Very inspiring art from talented NZ artists. Free tours too.
H.
We didn’t expect much to be there, but we spend a very fun evening in The museum. Staff was friendly and helpful, we didn’t join the tour and just wander off. There are fun things for kids and keep them busy, ask the staff. The closer’ gives some interesting facts of the paintings. Maori section located upstairs also give us more culture experience to us (other then visiting the Maori Dancing tour). The paintings on Canterbury and those by NZ artist is a perfect wrap of for our road trip in the South Island. The shop has color sectioned souvenirs and some interesting book collections.
C.
A lovely place to visit, especially when the weather is crummy. A nice Gallery, you can take pictures of almost everything inside. A nice open space to sit end enjoy the ambiance. It's also free which is really lovely for a traveller on a serious budget.
s.
Great space for all ages especially in wet days located in central city close to botanical garden, museum, and art centre. Ample parking around the building, coat check buggy check services available. Cafe and shops on site. Regularly have New events going on great place for kids.
M.
This museum has a certain charm in that it blends both old and new in a modern building. You can take lifts/elevators if you wish or use the grand staircase with its suspended from the ceiling above, sculpture.
There are some computer displays of information about portraits, there are 20th century British paintings, 19 century French art, modern New Zealand art a nice interesting mix.
Some large sculptures are outside in front of the museum.
P.
Love the art gallery, something happens with time in this place you walk out and think only an hour has gone but its been three. The art in the shop is awesome and prices are reasonable. Great for xmas shopping for the hard to buy for.I love my alice in wonderland jigsaw and the fall of icarus print. 👍👍👍 I will be back.
D.
Great building exterior. Easy walking distance from city centre. Wheelchair friendly. Gift store & cafe. Numerous galleries. Helpful staff. I thought the air stuffy inside.
J.
Great place to visit, with exciting architecture in an ever changing scene. Always something new to look at even if it's the same thing from a new perspective. The Cafe is also great with friendly staff. I still haven't explored the art centre fully but I know I'll be back, the sooner the better.
n.
Enjoyable art gallery plenty of room to walk around without being near other people
N.
This is a fantastic gallery with changing and thought provoking displays and art. Don't forget to check out the gift shop which has great and thoughtful items
D.
Christchurch Art Gallery is good place to be around. It has a gallery tour guides, who gives you tons of information and knowledge about the things in gallery. It has a refreshment area as well where you can have light refreshments. I think it's good place for each age group of people
D.
Amazing pieces, especially some of Russell Clark's work
A.
One of the best modern museum I have been to in a while. the building is amazing and some of the artwork is thought provoking. In a city full of public art, it is no wonder this museum is so good
S.
This place is a must do while in Christchurch, it offers a wide range of beautiful exhibitions. You could easily spend hours in this amazing place. It is free to do but please given generously at the donations box if you do enjoy it. Art needs support from those who benifit from it.
R.
This gallery has great contemporary art pieces by New Zealand artists and some pieces by old masters. A great place to appreciate modern art and traditional paintings. A must visit for me and my wife everytime I'm in Chch.
R.
A lot of great art. Not very family friendly. A staff member told us off for having children in the gallery. I'm glad it was free. The museum is a far better family experience. Could do with an art section made by and for local children. Let everyone feel included.
K.
Absolutely worth the trip. It’s not an overly large gallery but the exhibitions and art work was worth looking at. For not really wanting to go in I was really surprised by how much I enjoyed it!
C.
Great exhibitions. Can't believe the quality you can get here for a free gallery.
I hope everyone donates - it's well worth it!
S.
Interesting experience
Couple things to comprehend and discuss. Can be a good place to go with few friends, that makes the experience full.
Have fun exploring, even if you think that art is not a subject you're interested in
l.
We had a great time there, lots to see, enjoying the amazing art there and the staff is really friendly too! Highly recommend!
H.
Excellent gallery, beautiful building, good exhibitions, friendly staff, and FREE. Yes, it is free entry. Thank you for the experience. I recommend this place.
D.
Building itself and the works very good. I particularly liked Juliet Peter's work. Definitely has the Eric Rivilious influence. Recommended. Cafe as well.
K.
Good range of different art styles. Very well curated and well worth the 2-3 hours it takes to go through.
C.
Time to enjoy art at Christchurch. Art full of history. Take your time to enjoy the art. We are allow snap photo inside the art gallery only for personal purpose and not for commercial purposes.
K.
This Gallery never disappoints. Great permanent collection, and always interesting and thoughtfully curated exhibitions.
V.
Perfect art spot when visiting Christchurch. Parking garage is right in the building. The gallery offers free guided tours which we took. Our guide was excellent in telling us about some of the paintings as well as the arrangement. Some of my favorite pieces are below.
H.
Great building, small but lovely collection with special exhibitions throughout the year. Nice shop also. Helpful staff. Park house right beside, very convenient (with first hour free parking). Definitely a must see in Christchurch.
J.
Great art Gallery In Christchurch and definitely worth a good visit. Lots of amazing modern and traditional artwork.
M.
Great for the free movies they put on over Christmas 🎄!! Not sure why they have the best sculpture in the gallery attached to the ceiling where you can't see it #tablenchairs
S.
The gallery in one floor (2nd) but half the space was closed for installing new exhibits, and the permanent ones were not too interesting. But it's free.
H.
A fabulous guided tour of the traveling exhibitions. Thrilled to come away with a freebie poster of one of Max Gimblett's iconic works - plus a not so free t-shirt of same. Louise Henderson exhibition is a knock your socks off one
C.
Love the old masters painting Amazing.
Tapa cloth thoughtfully creative.
Contemporary Art, I just shake my head. Skill?
H.
Big enough, I thought there would be alot more as in art exhibitions considering how big it is. Always the same exhibits gets stale if u go more than twice. Good for tourists & older folk.
P.
Various art pieces to look at. Beautifully built and structured gallery. Friendly staff on hand curating. Toilets very clean. Overall place very clean. Interesting art through out from various styles.
B.
Not especially outstanding.
One guide was overly strident to primary school students getting too close while looking at some items.
Not touching but just looking. Poor training of the guide it seems to me.
N.
This is a gallery that acknowledges its history as a settler institution, and works to rectify that by showcasing works by indigenous artists. I'll keep coming back.
r.
Amazing displays!!! Wonderfully curated works of art. There really is something for everyone.
A.
Superb staff. Took 2 yr old who loved one experience so much we sat on the floor for over 20 minutes. Staff were so encouraging, really enjoyed that he was so engaged with art so early.
D.
always good, but be warned some of the guides are a little pushy,we avoided one exhibit because one guide was really over the top about it
K.
Art is always good, however this galley has an eye for great
d.
Much bigger & better exhibition than I expected. Impressive building & some master pieces with detailed instructions. Highly recommended, a must-see place in Christchurch. Free entry.
A.
This art gallery is truely amazing and everyone should experience it, as there been alot of time and constructive thinking that went into its design.
P.
Constantly changing impressive collections of art work from all over the world.
T.
Loving it. Many thing to see. Especially New Zealand Art. We went to see the photography exhibition "Hidden light".
R.
Always a top-notch art experience. . .be sure you check out the shop inside. . .lovely art-inspired items for purchase!
M.
Must do in Christchurch. The classics to modern art with special exhibitions. Great talks and community events. Architecture stunning. Also great to take photos outside with clouds and sunsets.
J.
This is a good place to go if you understand art. Because I don't understand art. A crushed milk bottle that looks like a rock. !!!. What makes those painters a great painter when my kids can do the same thing. The place was very clean and spacious. Good service from the people who work there.
c.
Personally, I think this is more than just a art gallery. It is a MASSIVE ART SHOW. Can’t believe it is free. It’s a quiet place with a lot of paintings, art works, screen arts…. Tucked away in the middle of the Central City. And with that, the Friendly staffs over at the art gallery makes me to visit over and over again! Never regretted going there. Very nice place :]
M.
Great gallery in an awesome building.
Good exhibition space. However I found many of the spaces too dark.
The art work was varied and of high calibre.
One exhibition space had a dark floor with dark wire and supports (which providing protection for the pieces) near ground level. These were difficult to see and were a definite tripping hazard if you were not paying attention or your eyesight was less than perfect.
I also noticed that there were scuff marks and half wiped walls and surfaces in places. That indicates haphazard cleaning or lack of cleaning.
T.
The very nice modern design of the building and the art it has the whole thing is art
P.
Especially the craft market on Sundays
J.
Great Flying Nun display certainly worth a look at and don't forget the gift shop for memorabilia
C.
Always a great place to spend some time in the city. The ever changing exhibitions are top quality. There is also some fun games and blocks to kill some time under the stairway. Highly recommend a visit and don’t forget to make use of the parking under the building which is very affordable
M.
Lovely relaxed atmosphere, highly recommended to check out when having a stroll through town
C.
Absolutely amazing. Definitely worth visiting. Free to go in. But they do accept donations.
G.
Just awesome! I enjoyed seeing different kinds of arts and paintings.
T.
It took me two afternoons to see all the art and it's awesome that they have many different art types from paint and videos to photography and more. An awesome experience, will be going back when they have other expos on. P.s the old man and and the chicken is as real as it can be I even thought it was slightly moving in my mind's eye🤣😊
K.
Probably new Zealands best national gallery, if your in town check it out.
I always get my art fix here!
o.
Free entry with 6 different exhibitions when we went. They even had complimentary guided tours. It was time well spent.
S.
Awesome place to vist
R.
The building itself is an art work. An interesting unique glass structure. Entry is free but you can pay a donation. There are many interesting traditional and contemporary art exhibitions on display. Even if you are not an art lover its definitely worth a visit.
M.
Amazing museum!!
Very large with interesting exhibitions!
C.
Awesome trip to the Art Gallery!
Everything is terrific, amazing exhibits, superbly presented and we were so warmly received!
Our Volunteer Guide Ang was lovely. So positive, fun and full of energy. It was a joy to be taken around the sights with her. We then slowed down returning to the amazing Graham Bennett exhibit. My my that was incredible, and Michael Purdie on hand at front desk and around for a friendly smile, enthusiastic ear and inviting persona.
Thanks to the whole team. Great day.
S.
Beautiful space, thoughtful curation and excellent gift shop!
L.
Free, and there are some really good exhibitions on at the moment.
D.
beautiful building, interaction for the kids and saw some nice pieces (Colin mccahons too)
R.
Just awesome.
The entry is free. You can give a donation at various stations, please do. It helps keep it free to the public.
S.
Free food for your mind. There is always some interesting exhibition.
a.
Nice gallery very diversified and has a nice collection for local artists as well as international
A.
Nice gallery, spacious, lovely exhibitions, really enjoyed bill hammond's exhibition and the wheriko exhibition.
B.
Not bad. Some big nz artist names which was nice, Goldies and Hotare were nice to see in person. Coffee shop had nice coffee. Kids enjoyed it aged from 11-2.
K.
Fantastic art gallery and must see if you visit Christchurch.
M.
Love the Art Gallery & I would like to visit more often. On the day I visited part of the space was closed for a set up. However, still lots to see. I will try to get back to see the new display.
M.
Ralph Hotere exhibition fantastic. Excellent in every way. You need pleasant staff to remind not to take photos. The no photos signs are tiny
A.
Very lovely art gallery, many master pieces.
J.
Depending on the artists on display, this is definitely worth a visit.
K.
If you appreciate art I'm sure you may enjoy, beautiful building, not not really child friendly however....
Visit the Christchurch Museum instead with kids.
N.
Love and disappointment with this gallery, sometimes the exhibitions are nice and interesting, but many times they are not interesting at all, feels like the artist didn't have enough time and just put something random out there... A better selection would be great.
P.
Great space. Always something new or interesting to see. Wonderful store and restaurant both within the building.
C.
So many interesting and inspiring art works. If you are art lover then must visit. Loved it.
R.
Evening market was lovely. Clean and welcoming, knowledgeable staff. Look forward to our next visit lovely way to spend an evening with my daughter.
B.
Got some really interesting things at this art gallery. They have a good setup so you aren't walking around in circles. Overall the art here is fantastic! The staff are also very friendly and helpful!
C.
Arrived in Christchurch and caught the tram on it's all day circuit and went to the art gallery. Special exhibition of Ralph Hotere which is excellent. The other works were great too.Very helpful staff
M.
Lovely gallery with through explanations of the work.
L.
Very nice gallery, interesting, free and even cool for kids, free wifi. Must do in Christchurch
J.
Lots of things to learn about art...educational.
R.
A must when we visit Chch, but we didn't like the Hotere exhibition. The rest was OK, art is a very personal taste, but how is a Mink blanket art?
The ladies were very helpful, thanks heaps to them.
R.
Loved the night tour. Highly recommended.
J.
This was a cool experience. Really to see creative works that happen in NZ and for free at that! So wonderful and hopefully get to see more exhibits in the future.
R.
A highlight of our time in Christchurch, and the best art gallery we have been to in New Zealand. The art is varied and very high quality and the exhibition on Louise Henderson is gorgeous. The gallery is free with an optional donation. There is a free bag and coat check. The gallery is cozy warm. Very worth going to!
A.
I'm not an art gallery fan and went because of an exhibition recommended to me but unfortunately that exhibition had ended, so for me it was an average experience.
E.
We had a wonderful experience of visiting this art gallery. The staff were extremely helpful and attentive to visitors needs. We loved the Ralph Hotere exhibition.
D.
So beautiful
If you have 2-3 hours , nothing to do, you can go to art gallery , and that has a coffee shop
L.
We took the guided tour of the Ralph Hotere exhibition. The volunteer guide was knowledgeable & engaging. The art was well presented including some large pieces.
S.
Christchurch's premium art gallery, a modern design close to the Arts Centre and COCA just around the corner. There is always something of interest going on here, whether traditional or modern, bold or muted. Open on Wednesday evenings till 9pm, which is great if the weekend gets full.
K.
Our visit came at the expense of forgoing Akaroa which turned out to be a blessing because of the weather. The staff on site are very helpful and the exhibits on display were really interesting. The pick for everyone was Louise Henderson and her range of works through different styles. At the end of your visit, do have a look in the gift shop as there are some great ideas for presents either for yourself or close friends.
K.
Nice piece of arcitecture, another fine piece of design in Christchurch.
A.
Spilled coffee all over my white t-shirt in the foyer. Tried to get a new shirt in the gift shop but they didn't have any mediums left :(
Artwork was A+ amazing, although I think putting sparkling lights in the elevator is a bit of a stretch as far as an installation goes. But it did make me laugh, so maybe that was the point?
Regardless, I'd recommend anyone visit the Christchurch art gallery if they want to see some genuinely amazing installations from local and international artists.
D.
Loved the art works of so much talent. Would definitely recommend a visit...in the old and new galleries. A great way to spend an hour or 2.
S.
Free entrance and the art is well putted. Modern place and beautiful pieces of work.
J.
Had a really good tour guide that described everything in full detail. Really enjoyed seeing all the NZ art :D
M.
Love the art gallery it's amazing. However went for the winter night markets and was thoroughly disappointed. Not many stalls. Was a huge letdown.
D.
This place exhibited our uncle Ralph's paintings especially Black Phoenix and Opea Opea Rui Ruia that was installed at the Auckland Airport at one stage
T.
Loved the different displays. Very educational and fun.
S.
Very good place for a morning break, very helpful friendly staff.
C.
Beautifully designed building which has a great coffee shop. Free entry to most exhibitions although seasonal events are charged. Secure underground parking and accessible galleries. An interesting place to spend a couple of hours.
L.
Not really my kind of art but the galleries are very impressive and so is the building. Lots of abstract and historical collections. I guess its good to go if you have a background in art but you may have a better time a local galleries.
J.
Interesting building, with good layout and selection of galleries for a variety of art, well worth a look!
c.
Large modern and clean hosting thievery best artists
C.
I loved it here, I spent so many hours in here perusing the galleries. I enjoyed the variety of art on display: paintings, sculptures, videos, optics, and a neon sign. They have a great collection and excellent descriptions of the artworks next to them. I also really appreciated that entry was free.
J.
Loved the flying Nunn exhibition.other exhibitions cool to
B.
Such a great time visiting this beautiful museum. Definitely a must if you're passing through Christchurch whilst travelling. I could have spent all day here. The exhibitions were astounding and the staff were all friendly and eager to learn how they can improve the experience for guests. Will definitely come back again when in Christchurch :) <3 xxxx
L.
Fantastic to view art in the city again. Loved the historic paintings. Would be great to see them all together again, instead of separated
M.
Must-see in Christchurch. Wide variety: from classic to modern art.
K.
The spaces are amazing. Rich sptial design for exhibitions.
S.
Skilled educators here. They run great workshops in various arts (music today!) and the price is affordable for schools. Thanks.
J.
Amazing exhibition, pity it was only for a couple of days.
P.
This is an absolute gem. Some superb and significant NZ work, with a touch of European. The building is magnificent in terms of space and gives the art room to breathe. Some interesting ideas expressed. Would suggest taking the guided tour (free but check for times) to give you an insight and overview. Do not leave Christchurch without visiting.
h.
Awesome class trip. Did the pasifika option. Kids produced their own tapa design. Fantastic fun and educational too.
R.
Lovely gallery and I personally love the classical oil paintings so it was nice to see a good selection of the 17th century Dutch portraits and landscapes in oil, also Te Wheke exhibition was very nice
T.
Always enjoy going to see all there exhibitions here
J.
Some interesting pieces on display with a nice variety of mediums such as film, projections, using audio and of course classic on-the-wall frames. Arguably under utilised space for such a large building as only so much of it was actually dedicated to the exhibition. Worth a visit, but you won't be making a day out of it.
J.
Excellent Art Gallery. Fi est art on display. Very modern building fine Architecture, not really my taste but magnificent in it's own way. Lots of glass magnificent stairs Gallery spaces top notch. Some magnificent Canterbury Art hangs there such as Bill Suttons work but it also covers a range of times with excellent examples. Give yourself plenty of time here.
V.
The gallery is well kept and designed. I wasn't a fan of all their art and exhibitions, but they were okay. I wish there has been more of the local artist's paintings and sculptures rather that the weird and boring light show they tried to market as their main attraction. 'Man/chicken' was the best thing in that place.
K.
Nice gallery featuring lots of local artists. Decently small size shouldn't take you more than 90min to see the whole thing through. Some older paintings as well as modern art. Were treated to a surprise concert by the city concert band in the lobby while we were there. Parking is cheap and no ticket to enter:)
c.
Awesome exhibits well worth a look
G.
Simply fanatic displays and something for everyone to view and admire.
Interactive displays as well.
Easy to get too and great facilities.
Restaurant on site.
L.
Good venue for school event. Lack of parking not ideal. Street parking is too dear.
K.
Awesome gallery! It’s beautiful from the outside and the inside enables you to see a lot of amazing art, most of it for free! The gift shop is full of nicely designed homeware, giftware, art stuff, books and more. And the restaurant / bar joined on also looks amazing but haven’t dined there yet so that will come in another review... Recommend an Art Day Out at this impressive gallery!
M.
The gallery itself is amazing but they need to be consistent over ladies bags a small half pack worn with one strap is half the size of some of the oversize bags some women carry...why should I be asked to leave my bag at the counter effectively because it's not called a ladies bag..also my little half pack has my essential controlled medication secured in it which I cant legally leave with anyone ....I actually felt discriminated against for not wearing a women's bag....not keen to go back
E.
Nice space with interesting exhibitions.
M.
What an amazing facility, and I don't really like art! Staff are very helpful and friendly and from what i saw, exhibitions are diverse, renewed fairly often and the gift shop has heaps of lovely items. Art makes me angry, but the ChCh Art Gallery made me happy again. Go figure!
A.
Great museum for modern art lovers
R.
What a great way to spend a wet morning, viewing the art. Admission is free, although donations are welcomed.
S.
Great building. Could spend forever there
M.
Always an awesome experience. The ground floor has a large table with educational toys for kids, just in case they get bored. Photos in the galleries are usually fine so long as you don't infringe an artist's copyright, and the gallery itself is exceptional. Donations in the main foyer are invited, but don't worry if you don't have cash on you. There's an EFTPOS machine as well.
A.
Great visit for young and old. Lovely space and a free day out. I'm local and I still can't believe the gallery is free. It really is excellent value. Something for everyone. Very friendly staff. We had a school trip, and the classroom and program they provided was of excellent quality.
C.
Loved it! Super varied, different art history periods. Mixture of classic art and contemporary art. The building is beautiful. I especially enjoyed the 1st floor constant exhibition with the various painters from New Zealand.
J.
Very friendly and helpful staff, great facilities and always some great exhibitions to look at.
K.
Great place to enjoy some local artists work... for free to!!! The cafe there is a little pricey but the food that you get is like art and worth the money
R.
Totally awesome place for the art lover. Always something going on inside like local musicians playing etc.
M.
Very cool collection of modern and traditional art. Some of it was a bit weird for my tastes but that's the art world I guess. I also enjoyed the smattering of exhibits outside the building as well. The cherry on the top of the whole visit. The only downside was that we didn't have more time to browse the collections here.
C.
Beautiful. A must see when you are in Christchurch.
S.
Good experience with kids, have fun in couple of hours.
C.
Not really my thing, but the staff were nice and the building is lovely.
A.
Decent gallery and interesting play nooks for young children
I.
Brilliant space. Always something new to see. Great Bill Hammond exhibition.
The gallery shop has lovely gift items. The coffee is also very good.
A.
Saw the Graham Bennett exhibition which was excellent. Well worth a visit. Just a pity that there were no postcards available to buy.
P.
Stunning, we could have spent all day there but didn't have enough time. The contemporary art we saw was very good
F.
Fantastic gallery with some absolutely incredible events, theater and lovely staff.
B.
Great permanent collection. We we're lucky enough to be here for the Frances Hodgkins exhibit (better than Picasso) and a lecture from the curator. Free admission, too!
F.
If you like browse museum. It is worth to visit
R.
An outstanding and varied collection of New Zealand art. Cool gallery shop and helpful staff
R.
Some excellent pieces and very well curated. My favourite was the Connor Clarke exhibit for (and by) the vision impaired.
P.
Great len lye exhibition which will stay with me for a while. Amazing sculptures were just mesmerising. Other exhibits on too of course, all good. The building is typical of a gallery, spacious and modern and easy to navigate. Staff were very helpful and friendly with us too. We really enjoyed our visit.
P.
Chanced upon this gem as we were wandering around Christchurch. We're no artsy family hence it wasn't in our itinerary but I'm pretty glad we stopped by! Great number of exhibited pieces but we mostly enjoyed WHERIKO-BRILLIANT.We visited for the special exhibition of William Wegman prints and video. It was great. The rest of the gallery was free, so I took in the historical photo exhibit room, too. The gift shop is stellar, too.
M.
Lovely building architecture and some interesting artwork and best of all it's free
M.
The Christchurch Art Gallery is a major gateway to the art of Canterbury and Aotearoa New Zealand. There are always exhibitions of new and challenging work as well as retrospectives. The gallery is also architecturally exciting and often is a venue for lectures and film screenings of niche topics. Last but certainty not least are it's bookshop, restaurant and research libraries.
S.
Great Place and awesome artwork
K.
Fantastic! Loved the Ancient New Zealand exhibition.
M.
Amazing building, worth a look.
M.
Its. Not a huge Art Gallery, but its nice done. And you also have free wifi there and places to chill and enjoy the art. They have classical art as well as modern.
A.
1st time there. Was great
G.
I absolutely loved this art gallery. It had everything i needed and wanted. Especially a lot of modern art which i very much appreciate. But there was also some nice renaissance pictures. I would definitely encourage you to go there and have a visit, plus it s free so no reason not to.
M.
Amazing mesuem for the price of free (donations welcomed)! It seems to go on forever; you'll be tired of walking by the time you are through it all. I would recommend setting aside a minimum of two hours for it. Quite interesting exhibits they have.
O.
(Free Entry) Awesome place to visit if you are a tourist or just looking for something to do in Christchurch. The gallery includes a cafe and food establishment and a gift shop with novelty Kiwiana items, books on the history of the area and more. The gallery itself is great with unique and frequently changing exhibits from famous and local artists. Great place to visit anytime!
J.
Good space, many different artists on display.
J.
Always a lovely experience, good range of local art
H.
Very cool gallery with famous New Zealand works I've always wanted to see from Goldie to Colin McCahon. Loved it.
K.
We really enjoyed the dark exhibitions that are currently on display. Our 7 month old was very entertained. Plenty of variety and some really interesting and different things on display.
H.
Their permanent collection felt stale. But obviously that's just my opinion as I love contemporary and abstract paintings. But it is great having art works available to see, and only enriches humanity. In a time humanity seems to have strayed very far from their path.
W.
Awesome - great experience - fantastic art
T.
Can definitely spend hours here look8ng at all the pieces on display. Early NZ landscape paintings, contemporary, modern, and also interactive displays over 2 floors in a great exhibition space.
T.
To be honest I'm not too fussed by many of the exhibitions, and I think it's a bit lame how these use various themes (e.g. hair, animals) to decide which bits of their own collection they bring out of storage. However, it's a privilege to be able to be not fussed by such a rich and varied collection in such a wonderful facility. Free admission too. Awesome.
L.
Loved it. Peaceful. A calm collection of artworks, close to The botanical gardens and inner city
R.
The gallery is a fantastic space.
There are exhibitions catering to a range of interests, and many allow engagement with children as well. The layout means that on slightly busier days visitors are well spread out, still allowing you the space to take things in.
J.
Once again, it is pitiful that tourists can only recall the destruction sites and do not value places like this.
One of my favourites Art Galleries in New Zealand. Staff was very kind and helpful with directions.
The art pieces in display were very contemporary which I enjoyed.
K.
This is a very contemporary art gallery which was also designed to offer spectacular views over Christchurch. Touch screens throughout the exhibition areas give extra information about the artist and/or work. It's very well done.
m.
Nicely set out and due to a lack of time we really only got to view the Louise Henderson exhibition. I'd never heard of her so it was a lovely surprise.
R.
The art gallery is awesome! Amazing exhibitions with some really good NZ art. I like that there are also info boards that explain a lot about Maori & European history in NZ. Great way for travellers to connect with our unique history.
R.
A FREE museum run by the city council of Christchurch (donations of course always accepted). Very interesting galleries and an immaculate facility. There was one featured gallery that required paid admission, but the rest of the museum was free to the public. Just check in your large bags/backpacks at the counter and explore!
J.
Amazing place to visit, there are two levels with several interconnecting galleries showing a variety of art. There is even something for the children to enjoy hands on! Highly recommend a visit and you can park the car in the underground car park
E.
Nice range of exhibits which refreshes frequently. Has a conveniently built-in underground parking managed by the Christchurch City Council. Sometimes the ground floor is converted into an events venue for the evening. Very classy place for those who love arts.
W.
Seen this a while ago at Dunedin Gallery when I was younger, seeing it again was really wonderful since I was talking about the exact piece before I came in that day!
Really weird coincidence but 10/10 would come back a lot. Good variety of collections all times of the year.
j.
Cool place to spend an hour or so. Free entry as well.
P.
Nice building, but I didn’t find the art on show as engaging as some other galeries I have been to. Some of it fits into my waste of time modernism. Did enjoy the deep dive into some of the paintings where a screen explains some of the questions about pieces of art.
L.
The building and grounds is fantastic and its central location is ideal. The staff really make an effort to explain the works but be warned not all exhibitions are suited to everyone's tastes. A great mix of art in central Christchurch. Its free!
D.
Marvelous buiilding, diverse artwork with some maori representation and some modern installations. The museum shop is delightful with interesting things to pick up as gifts or meaningful souveniers....some fun and some serious. All in all, an enjoyable way to pass a rainy afternoon.
B.
Lack of time, my time, enjoyed what I did see plus the free concert.
L.
Pretty excellent art gallery. Really enjoying seeing more inclusive works and exhibitions, really expanding on your every day show! Thankyou
R.
This is the City Art Gallery for Christchurch, it is a great place to go when you are on a budget because of the free entry. Some very cool Paintings inside.
A.
The Chch Art Gallery is a must see and the current Ralph Hotere exhibition is superb.
M.
Big gallery! It features different styles, techniques and a lot of information about the artists and their artworks. You can easily spend 3 hours inside if you read and watch everything carefully. There's loads of activities for the children aswell, so family visits are possible. There's a Café right next to it if you'd like to eat or drink something. If you need to go to the bathroom there are plenty of them on both levels. Thre best thing of course is that it's FREE - although I recommend donating a coin so the gallery stays free..
E.
I don't know much about art but I know what I like.
I liked somethings here, some not so much.
Don't take my word for it though, as I have already disclosed I don't know much about art
B.
I am not a gallery person, but I enjoyed the visit very much. An eclectic mix of everything, bright and cozy building, with all the facilities you need. The staff are friendly as well. A great rainy day activity. And it’s FREE!
C.
Fun painting workshop with Siene de Vries.
c.

S.
Very interesting art exhibitions. Certainly keep an eye out for further events.
G.
Excellent gallery. Spacious modern building with an eclectic and interesting art selection. Could easily spend a whole day there. Free guided tour if desired.
C.
Great range of art in a stunning building and the restaurant/cafe on site is pretty great as well. The whole build has a morden artistic feel which is really uplifting compared to some art gallery's. A must visit in Christchurch.
S.
An excellent collection. Lots of variety and interesting exhibitions put together by the curators.
I particularly enjoyed the "Bad Hair Day" exhibition which brought together different modern and classic works in very clever ways.
T.
Superb exhibitions...the building is an architectural delight..the staff were discrete, professional and obliging.
T.
Great place to visit if your in Christchurch. Free to enter and very friendly staff. Art work that makes you appreciate NZ artist talent in addition to creativity. In addition car parking is reasonable priced!
A.
Beautiful building centrally located in Christchurch. Has a nice atmosphere inside, and art available for all to see. A must see for all visiting
S.
Always a good place to visit. Nice balance of visiting and own collection exhibits which change regularly. Not always the best for little kids who like to run around but worth checking what's on first as some exhibits are better than others for them
R.
Such a wonderful collection with lots of Maori work and artists represented. Lots of engagement for the kids and lovely friendly staff.
S.
Superb restaurant, Universo - great food, reasonable prices, very attentive service. I lacked the time to view the galleries but the exhibitions looked enticing. Marvellous asset to Christchurch.
P.
A beautiful gallery to enjoy the wonderful exhibition..allow a good amount of time to fully enjoy.
R.
The building is very nice. The exhibitions are average to less than average. Seems too few objects to fill the space available. I do not appreciate flaky modern "art" which, to me, is fake.
n.
It's nice here I always feel a tad underwhelmed by the volume or lack of art work as I'm from Europe and used to being super exposed, however the design of building works well is very pleasant to walk round and a great area at the bottom for kids to sit and let loose with some puzzles etc. It's great for a meander and I have yet to go I to a private exhibition hopefully soon worth a trip
E.
Nice country i m not going i m noob and super country
R.
To be fair, a place like this would rise and fall on its exhibition. But the space is good, and the exhibitions I saw were engaging. Even in the elevator. You could spend hours here.
V.
Went for a school visit. The art activities were great. All kids enjoyed it. Fabulous staff
n.
Enjoyed time spent here. Artwork on display was varied & would probably suit most tastes. Well set out & the interactive displays relating to the sections was very good & informative.
G.
Very nice representation of New Zealand indigenous art, free admission. Other modern art doesn't resonate so much but enjoyed it all the same.
v.
Great show of art. Well laid out. Recommend.
S.
Very good
유.
Good to go out for the weekend
C.
An enjoyable visit to this modern, interactive, and engaging gallery. The exhibitions are well designed and make the most of the space. The building itself well presented, large, bright, and interesting in itself.
S.
Great Flying Nun exhibition .
D.
Fantastic selection of interesting pieces
M.
Beautiful art gallery with a good variety of styles, contemporary exhibitions and others related to New Zealand history. Public toilets, friendly staff and nice building.
K.
Two floors of exhibits, good mix of classic and more modern artworks. It is by donation and seems very well looked after. Parking below the building is very cheap.
Q.
A fantastic art gallery, such an asset. Great place to hang out for a couple of hours
G.
Massive building with some World Class pieces of art. Do see areas 6 and 7. Leave your bag, tripod and belongings with staff at the check in desk. GD.
H.
Good place too visit with family and friends. The problem is that there is not a restaurant inside but a lot of them in the surrounding. Free Wi-Fi and restrooms. Wheelchair access. It have an information desk with guide maps and you can live your bags or staff there so you dont have to carry all your day inside the building.
P.
Great experience. Excellent gallery host staff.... very helpful and informative.
O.
Lovely venue right in the center of town, was there for the SPCA Fashion Show
W.
So little display space, and the McDougall Art Gallery sitting empty nearby, meanwhile all our taonga sits in storage, unable to be seen...
P.
Modern building with multiple exhibitions featuring Pakeha and Maori artists
S.
Lovely collection of arts. Also on the ground floor they had a setup to entertain the kids while the adults to take turn to view the art collection
R.
Yeh it's great thanks gift shop has improved not as good as the papa but closing.
A.
Very nice. Not an expert on art but lovely place to visit

Wonderfully accessible for those of us who experience a mobility Impairment! Galleries are big open spaces. I Love Te Puna o Waiwhetu !
A.
Try the 11:00 am tour. Excellent information and very friendly.
O.
Nice building. I feel like there's not enough happening here though. The place definitely has potential for a lot more.
M.
Always a good range of exhibitions.
S.
Well curated and fascinating exhibition. Late nights are accessible for all ages and performances, music and food trucks are an added bonus.
N.
Great experiance quiet and peaceful in the centre of the city with some excellent artworks sad I ran out of time to get around all the exhibitions but will return soon with a half day to spend there
A.
Fantastic space. Great experience greatly helped by well informed and pleasant staff
D.
I don't know much about art but I enjoyed my visit to this gallery. It was modern and clean and the staff were super friendly and helpful. Particularly enjoyed the Cerith Wyn Evans exhibition
C.
Spectacular Ralph Hotere exhibition.
All round top gallery well worth a look
A.
Lovely gallery, really great layout. Only downside - the 2pm tour guide didn’t arrive so I couldn’t learn more about the history of the exhibitions.
G.
Good displays but light on Canterbury art history
J.
Fantastic morning spent around the gallery looking at the art works. The second floor with the impressionist art was simply stunning.
Highly recommend this for anyone.
S.
Always have been favorite thing to do in Christchurch. Was closed due to the 2010 earthquake for several years. And now that it is reopened, a blessing for the city
J.
Great collections and always something different displayed. The tour is well worth doing so you catch up on what's changed.
C.
Take a short tour and enjoy the in depth knowledge of the guide. Not just on some of the displays but also on the history and survival of the building.
J.
Beside the building itself which is amazing there is a superb collection of art work. Also some very modern art displays using light in various ways.

Y.
Such a beautiful building to walk around and I have always found the exhibitions to be beautifully executed. Very impressed.
A.
Not the biggest gallery. However, exhibits that were displayed were quite interesting and arranged well. Good activity when you have some time in the city centre.
S.
Great place to visit. Art works are always pleasing. The staff how ever left our young family with a young boy feeling uncomfortable and somewhat unwelcome.
G.
Nice displays and free guided tour with experts really helped make the visit more interesting. Cafe downstairs is superb also and a bit flash
M.
The Christchurch Art Gallery is home to a substantial public art collection, and also showcases various national and international exhibitions throughout the year. It opened in 2003, replacing the city’s former Robert McDougall Art Gallery.
J.
Always something new to see, lovely staff and easy parking. Love this place!
c.
Love exhibits that show nz.artists emerging from a sort of euroArtsoup....especially the M.Paeroiki Black Bull on Piano ....beaut gift to ch.ch.
J.
I found it very difficult or find out why they had changed the name of the country and the focus on hell and the devil at the main entrance, not a place to bring school children.
J.
Personally we found the interpretation was all about the artist and too little about the art. The galleries are spacious and quiet, and the shop is marvellous, so it's not all bad!
C.
Interesting building design. Good exhibitions. Helpful staff, you can leave your jacket/bag at reception and collect it later.
H.
I liked the variety of paintings. The old masters paintings with the inter -active digital "learn more" was a novel way of finding out more about the painting /artist.
G.
Awesome- great for adults & children , we will go again .
P.
The building is a great piece of art work. Walked around for a while and I wondered how those guys did all that art work
P.
Quite an epic building..... but looking tired and dirty..... Still a nice spot to visit although parking is an absolute nightmare.. . .
I.
Good selection of contemporary art, arranged in good interesting selections. Good special displays too. Excellent venue. Highly recommended for an hour or two.
J.
A lot of great art here. the building is also very interestingly layed out. I'd like it, though, if the "modern art" was less "modern" and more, well, good.
I laughed when I saw it.
R.
Lovely gallery. Limited but quality collection.
H.
It is lovely to have regularly changing exhibitions. The gift shop is a lovely wee place to visit. The latest Christchurch dislay is amazing!!

Excellent range of work. The perfect space to meander slowly, whilst wearing a black turtleneck - imagining you're a pretentious art student. Love it.
