Reviews of Okains Bay Museum

This museum houses a truly impressive collection of Maori artifacts, from all parts of New Zealand. The Waka collection is among the best in New Zealand. Items are carefully displayed and labels give a clear explanation of significance and purpose.
The colonial section is well set out, showing a wide range of items across the life of colonial New Zealanders.
The cottages and other buildings are well maintained and have a sense that the owners and workers have just stepped out for a moment
The museum is well worth a visit.

Amazing museum seemingly tucked away in the back of beyond. Highly recommended, in fact worth going out of your way to make the stop. Also plan for a good hour as they have a great collection of early Maori artifacts and history as well as the colonial history. Then not far to pop into the cool Okains Bay General store with a great collection of retro bits and pieces to fit out your campervan and grab an ice cream.

This would have to one of the best museum collections I’ve ever visited. Such an extensive collection and well presented. Brilliant.

Brilliant place, the new room with the artifacts from ngai tahu is incredible. Their collection is better than Canterbury Museums. Especially impressed by the Kereru trap. Everything is so lovingly done here. Love seeing the historical waka too.
V.
The best collection of authentic Māori artefacts I’ve seen. Well worth a stop.

Absolutely mind blowing this museum. So small filled with so much rich culture and history

Tino ataahua te marae nei. Beautiful place , Okains Bay is the place to be on Waitangi day if you live around the Banks Peninsula or Canterbury region. The Hangi is to die for. Good old traditional ground Hangi not a steamed job either and the ceremonial launching of the Waka . Good day for the whanau.

It's obvious the museum doesn't have much money to be managed in a proper way, which is a shame because it gives a lot of information and artefacts of Maori lives. Quite interesting for a short stopover if you are in Okains Bay.

Awesome place, very reasonable price, spectacular nature, very rich Mauory museum

Spectacular views, remote bay, with a museum collection of pre and post European Maori artefacts, rated as "of national significance" . A must see, plus various early settlers exhibits. Expect winding roads, steep hills, and leave plenty of time to goggle at the treasures on show.
