Reviews of Sign of the Kiwi Cafe
M.
This restaurant is at the beginning of the hiking trail, and you can come here for lunch before hiking. There are many choices of drinks, food choices are not bad, and the service standard is quite high. The restaurant has both outdoor and indoor options. Indoors are a good choice if you are afraid of the sun. There are many mugs hanging on the wall in the restaurant, which is quite interesting. In terms of food, I ordered a hamburger and fries meal. The portion was quite large, and the taste and production level were good. You can give it a try.
R.
Great location, character filled charming building, lovely views, great food (I had French Toast) & coffee served by friendly staff. What more could you want?
S.
Great place to sit down, amazing view and good service
K.
Sign of Kiwi: Great place for sit down lunch or just a coffee; we had a hot lunch and were not disappointed lovely food and great service. Wonderful atmosphere and the view amazing. Very quiet and peaceful sitting indoors or you can sit outside in the sun. They were quite busy while we were there but there was no long wait for service. Would recommend this place 100% Outstanding food and service.
A.
Lovely view and cute cafe. Unfortunately the coffee is pretty average and too milky. Also an iced coffee or iced chocolate is $9.50- and definitely not worth that! Pretty much 80% cream and icecream and hardly any milk or coffee. Hot chips were yum, but the aioli given with them is so watery.
C.
Went here Easter Saturday for a drive and coffee & cake.
The coffee was outstanding, and hot, and the warmed, very slightly baked banana cake with home made yoghurt was to die for.
A nice drive up there and fantastic partial view of Christchurch City. Will definetly go back
D.
Food is yummy and staff are friendly as well as the view from above is Es Pec tac ocular!
M.
Seems they're famous for the scones which is chunky and mouth fully and fresh won't say the best but there's potential with bit of flavor. The history and location is an attraction for a must stop. If it's raining it will be space limited as not made for big groups but once the sun rays starts to shine having a cup of coffee is enjoyable outside as much as it is inside.
T.
Friendly staff, nice coffee, yummy classic date scones, super tasty scrambled egg and crispy rosti, lovely view
M.
Great spot for brunch, lunch or coffee. Great views, friendly staff. Eggs Benedict (aka The Kiwi Stack) not so great: Rosti on the crunchy side of cooked, and eggs solid, not runny. Excellent coffee made up for this minor fault.
D.
Fantastic views and really friendly service... a must sww if visiting Christchurch. Food and coffee were also really good at reasonable prices.
C.
Great views and special site - very well run and the food great - have your coffee break amongst the fine garden setting with the native birds and sweeping views of the city .
d.
Lovely place to have coffee after the walk.. fantastic date and orange scone..best I've had actually
D.
Great food both cooked for you or already prepared in the cabinet. Smoothies, coffee, Ice chocolate, teas and more. Great customer service but did get given the wrong coffee 🤔 otherwise great views and busy as.
S.
Tucked up on the Port Hills this lovely cafe is a welcome break for tired walkers. Jammed packed with gorgeous, fresh food and great coffee, it's definately worth a visit. Try their beautiful home made date scones - they are terrific!
袁.
I have been here three times. I like the coffee and cakes in this shop. It is in Victoria Park. There is no bus to go there. If you want to come here. You have to drive or bike. All of the coffee and cakes are extremely delicious. Cakes are not too sweet and the prices are very affordable. Besides drinking and eatting.you can have a scenic view of the whole city and mountains surrounding you. The waiter are very friendly. They always smile and joke. What's more there are several tracks near the shop. You can have a wonderful walk after enjoying yourself here. It's an amazing place and i recommend it.
H.
Absolutely delicious scones - the best date scone I had ever had. The view and atmosphere is beautiful. This place comes highly recommended.
D.
Perfect coffee which I was very happy about as it's been a while, we had an excellent savoury scone (although we did have to ask to have it warmed up) and a great lemon meringue slice. Go enjoy a coffee with the view!
O.
Great view with good coffee, but the amount of the iccream is small considering the price is $5
N.
Get there early for their scones! Genuinely kind people (shoutout to Sam the barista) and excellent local food and coffee. Great trails right out the front door and some of the best views of Christchurch and Governor's Bay.

A.
Excellent cafe with exotic scenery. Ice creams are delicious too with a increased selection.
D.
Savoury scone was the nicest I have ever tried, service amazing, views amazing. The building dates back to 1860 but it has been really nicely preserved.
I recommend not to expect to find a car park so be prepared to walk and be patient and kind to others.
C.
Lovely little cafe with view. delicious sweets and tea. Very relaxing.
C.
Magical. We love walking the Harry Ell track to the Sign of the Kiwi cafe and having a coffee and eats or an icecream, children friendly and fab views.
S.
Great spot on a sunny day, was super busy, liked it so much the first day we came again the next. Good coffee, loved the soup, French pear tart and they really do make a fabulous date scone.
B.
Lovely little coffee shop with the best views! You can take a walk in the hills, and enjoy a wee treat before heading back down. Beautiful piece of our city's history
S.
Great cafe, delicious ice creams with great selection of flavours. Great location with views both sides of the hill. Friendly service.
K.
Great friendly service and great location.
Crepes are delicious and I would highly recommend a visit. There are tracks available around the cafe with great picture opportunities 😊
P.s they use metal straws so bonus on being environmentally friendly 👍
D.
Really nice spot for a coffee or some yummy food, very friendly staff.
G.
Good coffee and food, great ice cream stop, best view going
M.
Every visit is a fabulous time. Some girlfriends and I did a lunch date here and a drive down to Lyttelton and through Sumner. Love the vibe, the drinks and the food. The owner is lovely. The view is amazing. Got the cheeseburger and chips and it hit the spot.
W.
Lovely coffee. Staff very friendly. Great experience. Highly recommend a visit
А.
I must say that some of the cabinet food is really good, and the scones are very nice too. Can't say the same about the coffee, though.
The main reason I'm only giving three stars is the inconsistency of the info on their website. I've recently noticed they advertise an all day breakfast, which I found really exciting. Well, the ALL DAY part is a big fat lie. When I got there at 3pm I found out the kitchen was closed and apparently had been closed since 2pm. The opening hours are also pretty confusing because it's till 3.30 on Google and till 5.00 on weekends on their website.
Oh, and to add to this, the manager (the owner? the old bold dude) seems to like having annoying conversations with customers. While I was there he decided to talk to a family sitting next to us. It was clear that two of them didn't understand him much and the third, who could, wasn't happy with this sudden attention. Yet the dude proceeded to tell them random facts about their country of origin. It seemed like there would be no end to him talking. Really made me understand what an acquaintance of mine meant when she said the guy was weird and was really pushy trying to sell wine to her.
A.
Great place to chill out after a nice walk in the surrounding tracks. And if the weather is warm enough you can have a nice ice cream. The snacks are good but nothing exceptionnal. And the last time we visited, they were already out of scones at 11am...
K.
The amazing view is paired by delicious coffee and ice cream. But the scones are their biggest hit! Don’t miss ordering one when you visit next!
L.
Very pricy! I didn't like the large sausage roll but I really enjoyed my iced mocha! There's was good places to sit outside and the walking track was close by to work off those calories 😉
R.
Highly recommend. We stopped in for brunch after wandering the port hills tracks. The staff very very friendly . Food and coffee were both very good. Nice strong coffee and I had a beautiful berry slice. The scones were also very good.
R.
Stunning views and great food. Worth a trip up just for a break at this cosy cafe
j.
Best date scones I've ever had. Amazing views and great service..
R.

Fantastic location, great quality food, friendly staff, interesting history. What more do you want?
A.
Great views & the food is good but the order service is just inefficient.
M.
No take away coffee 😳 tad disappointing after a long hike around the hills
J.
Wonderful treat to stop off here. Friendly staff, delicious food and a fantastic view.
S.
Just loved this place! A stone cafe in the hills above Governor's Bay, Christchurch. Knick-knacky, hospitable, great staff and great food and beverage variety. Highly recommended... I would love to return to the cafe should I have opportunity when visiting Christchurch. Though I am mobile, there isn't good wheelchair access here...
C.
Had an awesome date scone (best date scones in town!) and a cuppa while sitting admiring the view over Christchurch and the Southern Alps. Such an awesome place.
R.
Great view. Could do with more parking, but a great little coffee stop.
R.
Delicious food wonderful views children friendly but don't let that out you off!
H.
Great staff, fabulous view, menu to appeal to all tastes

A reasonable lookout to the city but whats great are the nearby treks e.g. Mitchell's which offer fantastic views.
S.
Absolutely lovely cafe. Fantastic views and delicious food. Worth the drive up the hill.
L.
Lovely views , great atmosphere a must do

M.
Wow. If not for the views come here for the amazing food made with quality ingredients, flair and respect PLUS en point hospitality. One of my favorite spots
R.
Traditional looking with an authentic, rustic charm. Lovely ambience & on a sunny day, awesome views of Christchurch city I'm sure - (was low cloud and foggy when I went). But I love the location! Top of the hills!
C.
Yummy slice and smoothie. Enjoyed sitting outside with the great view.
A.
Great coffee and a beautiful view
Z.
Very special place with wonderful views. Good coffees and treats. Highly recommend the Sugarloaf track across the road.
S.
Very nice. Delicious coffee, good selection of food!
D.
Go for the date scone, stay for the view. Don’t leave it late too late in the day!
t.
Great view and brilliant coffee!
C.
Rarely do I visit a cafe where the food served is beyond expectations, usually when it's pretty good I'd give a five star rating, but the atmosphere, view as well as the quality of the meal made me want to recommend this place to any friend of mine who will visit Christchurch in the future! Please keep up the good work Sign of Kiwi!
J.
Great location and savory scones, but you need to be early as they sell out
S.
Very nice. Delicious coffee, good selection of food!
R.
The Sign of the Kiwi makes wonderful date scones and hot chocolate, I enjoyed the service and the politeness of the staff, so what more can you ask for.
C.
It's a stunning setting.

It was lovely but $10 for a bowl of chips was over the top
R.
The Sign of the Kiwi makes wonderful date scones and hot chocolate, I enjoyed the service and the politeness of the staff, so what more can you ask for.
J.
The coffee and brunch you drink while looking at the great view are the best!
E.
A regular pit stop when walking up the hill. It has it all. Beautiful views, delicious food, amazing coffee, excellent customer service and dog friendly. It's a nice spot to stop for some respite from the elements or just because.
p.
Lovely little place with great views and outdoor area. Savory scone with coffee was the highlight and the staff were great!
A.
Most amazing frangipane and pear cake. Yummy. And such a cosy place. We love coming here when visiting Christchurch
J.
Very environmentally friendly cafe!
Love their mug wall to save on paper cups.
Delicious food and excellent views.
Great little 20min loop track from the cafe giving great views of Lyttelton & Christchurch.
Super friendly staff too.
S.
Great cosy historic cafe with views. Plenty of short and long walks around the area. Plenty of parking (although you might have to park a bit up the road) Good coffee and superb date scones. Good healthy sporty atmosphere :)
K.
This historical rest stop for settlers is now an excellent cafe rest your legs after a walk around Victoria Park or as a pit stop for those who plan to bike around the port hills. Good coffees, ice-creams, delicious cabinet food and spectacular views. Use the restroom, fill up your water bottle and carry on towards Sumner, Lyttleton or the Banks Peninsular. Ample bike parking available.
A.
I really love this place. Great view, the staff is always happy and you got to try the burger!
R.
Nice little cafe overlooking Christchurch ample parking and good walks about there
C.
Awesome place with an amazing view. We love it ! You'll be serve quality food and a nice organic coffee. Wide range of hot or cold drinks (and organic juices !) and food (vegan slices, vegetarian and GF meals, wow !). I definitely recommend this place whereas you're with friends or family. It's incredible. And icing on the cake you can loose the calories you've just eaten/drunk by walking or biking on the beautiful tracks/trails all around the place. If you're around Christchurch don't miss it !
J.
One of my favorite cafes in Christchurch. Great position up in the Port Hills. the coffee is fantastic and the food is really well served with great portions and a decent menu. A lot of hikers mountain bikers and riders stop here as the traverse the summit road and Christchurch adventure park so its always bristling with activity
A.
Loved the view and especially COFFEE❤.
D.
Super cute cafe on top of a high up hill with spectacular views. Bathrooms are clean, so if you're up this way and need to go, this is a good spot to check out. There are also a number of hiking trails right by this cafe, and the views from these paths are even better!
A.
Good location with a great view. Food was good and reasonably priced.
T.
Best cafe of Christchurch, excellent staff, yummy food options, delicious vegan option available and most importantly they don't use plastic as lids or straws.... Beautiful views while you enjoy your coffee
S.
Delicious food with a stunning view of Christchurch city! The perfect place for a drink and a bite to eat after walking the beautiful Victoria Park trails.
D.
This is a great place to chill out and view the city. You will enjoy your break to the accompanying sounds of birds in the trees.
M.
I guess this spot is the most beautiful coffee place of Christchurch .. Location is stunning (views on Christchurch & Bank peninsula) . My partner and I love to stop before or after our Ports Hills exploration tour. Coffee is tasty, place is relaxing, staff is welcoming and price affordable. I really loved the date scone (not too sweet).
A.
Use to love this place. Still a nice seating area but disappointing service and sarcastic staff. WORST hot chocolate I have ever had in my life, very milky. Coffee was ok. Slices were actually very good (avoid dry brownie though). Over would be a 2.5 but views give it a 3
G.
Sat outside to relax after walking the Harry El track with a group of friends. Great time had by all. Nice coffee and food.
M.
Very friendly and a lovely old place best view of Christchurch when having a coffee and food
J.
Lovely spot with a fantastic rustic feel. Great views, friendly staff and a delicious range of food. Would be a five star if the brownie wasn't dry but I thoroughly enjoyed my iced chocolate!
C.
Great view with okay food.
A.
Not much choice of ice-cream, but really good!! Also, I think there is no need to say it is in a pretty good location!! They should get the bar bigger indoor anyway, since it is pretty small. Overall really recommended.
H.
Lovely cafe. The staff were super accommodating to our dietary needs. Friendly inviting environment.
J.
Great location and savory scones, but you need to be early as they sell out
A.
Great place for lunch - The owner is full of character was very busy but obliging and found us a nice table with a beautiful view over the city. Food was great – Home made grandmas recipes. Yummy Steak and Vege Pie, Louise cake and coffee.
A.

M.
Amazing view and friendly staff. It's definitely worth stopping by.
D.
Just strolled up there with some mates.. fab scones and iced chai.. cabinet food looked fresh n tasty.. great service.. stunning views..
S.
Guy who definitely worked there yesterday was pretty close to wiping my car out because he didn't look and was pretty arrogant.
Nice view tho.
Next time I wont stop.
I'm insured, are you??
A.
One of the nicest places for a coffee in Christchurch , typical new Zealand nice view up on the hill, good choice of coffee and food, but those scones, well you just have to have one, they take some beating. Coffee not as good as yesterday unfortunately, but we will pay many more visits.
M.
Good staff, good food, good coffee. We had a nice time there and it was the perfect place to go as a family of 5 before doing some of the local walks. Btw, the date scones are brilliant!
A.
Great place to have a drink or ice cream after a walk along the bushes or a Mountain bike ride on the slopes. Friendly service and good snippets and bites of sweet and salty.
J.
Lovely cafe to sit with your loved ones. Very friendly staff...the coffee was awsome and so were the scone😍😍😍 highly recommended place
T.
Nice hot choc and great selection of slices and muffins. We turned up 30 mins before closing to see they had already started so it wasn't very relaxing sitting with stacks of stools around us and the vacuum cleaner blasting.
D.
My wife and I have been frequenting the sign of the Kiwi CAFE for years and seen it survive and thrive through earthquakes council bureaucracy and new ownership. The staff and food are fantastic and the outlooks well are the best in Christchurch for this type of eating venue. Great job guys, regards Dave and Sue Nuttall
s.
Nice cafe with beautiful view :)
L.
Great to see the owner is willing to spend good money on a new sign that is perfectly in keeping with the ethos of this much-loved cafe. There would have been kiwis roaming through the bush on these hills in the early days. The wooden reminder is made from several pieces of mature timber fitted around stainless steel reinforcing rods, with the swing dampened down with special hinges, and the whole surface coated with 50 layers of preservative according to the craftsman, pictured here, who made the new sign.
C.
Great food and coffee. Take your own cup and leave it there if you are a regular. Well-deserved ice cream for a reward for walking up the track to the top!
F.
What a historic place for coffee, lunch or dinner. I believe it is the only medieval castle like building in NZ. The price is reasonable. The food is good.
J.
Good service, gf food made on site was delicious. Lemon slice to die for. Great range if beverages, I had chilled chain latte. Generous serve. Already planning next visit.
D.
Great little cafe with a fantastic view. Whenever visiting Christchurch I enjoy going there and the food is good. It is a windy drive or cycle to get there so allow time.
K.
Good scones awesome taste a and lots available, choc brownie a big flop really dry and overcooked, great place. Slow with drinks, All food finished before drinks came out.
D.
Great historic venue at the top of an excellent walk
Good coffee awsome scones if the lady owner is in the kitchen note if she isn't on scones won't be awesome just good.
Lovely views well worth the visit
P.

G.
My wife and I have been frequenting the sign of the Kiwi cafe both pre and post earthquake highly recommend it. The staff are fantastic, very accommodating and the homemade chicken pot pie is to die for.
Well done guys regards David and Susan Nuttall
a.
It was lovely but $10 for a bowl of chips was over the top
C.
Location and drinks were very nice. The iced drinks did take a while to come, but it was quite busy. Very limited parking and no takeaway options available.
A.
Amazing Veiws, beautiful spot for a coffee
M.
The most amazing view! If you appreciate history, this place is a must visit. The mocha is also yummy.
