Reviews of Heritage Precinct
A.
This is a great spot to reflect on the early European history in New Zealand. Walk through history, explore the horse stables and enjoy a picnic near the lake where there's plenty of seating areas. I'd return here in winter, as would have a different feel. Lots of Vintage equipment and bakeries for display, even life sized mannequins
T.
It's a walk you must do . Character in every building with a view of the lake
M.
Always an excellent spot to grab some food and beverages. Get down early and watch the sun climb into that azure big sky and the place come to life.
K.
Great place to relax and grab something nice from the cafe 😊
Y.
A most beautiful area to visit. I just loved it. And the view from across the lake looking back is magical spectacular.
V.
Worth the trip. Daughter 5, loved it wish we had more time for a swim as well
D.
While I’m not normally a fan of artificial heritage precincts, a lot of effort has gone into recreating the former town centre (that was flooded for the construction of the Clyde High Dam) in as close to the original town centre as circumstances will allow. There’s a mixture of buildings as museum and buildings as active uses, including bike hire for the adjacent brand new Lake Dunstan and Cromwell Gorge cycle trails. Supporting the businesses here supports the ongoing maintenance and development of the heritage precinct. Well worth a visit.
J.
Lovely area to wander about, right on the track to the Dunstan trail. Beautiful shops and the coffee shops all serve good coffee and fabulous food.
T.
Interesting place. Lot of history.
T.
Such a delightful place to walk and buy delicious bits n pieces at the Sunday market in Old Cromwell Town (Heritage Precinct) plus Jewellery, art and homewares etc...
If you have time book into this kitchen it has AMAZING food and overlooks the WEEDY Lake
P.
Quaint village celebrating the pioneers and hardworking heroes of Otago. Plus the modern day treats like coffee and good food. Check out the 2x art galleries.
J.
Well hidden, been to Cromwell several times and had no idea this existed. Really neat little historical area right on the lake side. Definitely worth a visit. Signposting was a bit vague but once you get there it's easy to head back out.
R.
Had a lovely meal in The Office. Beautiful spot by the lake side.
O.
Interesting looking at the old shops, there are many coffee shops here
Y.
A most beautiful area to visit. I just loved it. And the view from across the lake looking back is magical spectacular.
R.
Beginning of Lake Dunstan bike trail down to Clyde. Lovely coffee and great sausage roll served at Jolly's.
S.
Family outing we had so much fun 🙂
G.
Very interesting looking at all the old shops and history of the area, plenty of places for a coffee and meal. Electric bike hire and holiday information available. Plenty of toilets.
N.
Market on but sooo expensive didn't buy anything. Had lunch at Cafe which was ok but strong wind blowing dust everywhere. The 4 stars come solely from the stunning scenery.
J.
Lovely area to wander about, right on the track to the Dunstan trail. Beautiful shops and the coffee shops all serve good coffee and fabulous food.
C.
A beautiful little town with some fascinating history. Great spot to stroll around and take in the sights. Then stop in for a coffee and delicious meal. Very glad to have found this place while touring NZ.
J.
Small but sweet place. Shops here are late open but early close (10-15) you have to be there at the right time. It is very great to enjoy the breakfast or cafe at the lake front. The cloud, mountains, lake, old heritage make a great view and start a great day.
J.
Love this colonial site, pretty historic buildings.
n.
Fantastic, wonderful and beautiful scenery especially when looking over the junction of the two rivers and good work going in to save the historic buildings.
R.
I absolutely love Central Otago and Old Cromwell Town is one of my favourite spots to enjoy a good coffee while exploring the history. Old historic Scott's Bakehouse around the back is genuinely worth a look.
J.
Very well worth a visit. It’s such a beautiful location. The cafe was great and there is a nice collection of heritage buildings and displays to fill in half an hour. Lots of space for kids to run around at the water front. Make sure you follow all the paths up the hill to see everything.
C.
Over bridge to Cromwell and turn right then you will find yourself in what locals call old Cromwell town on the shore of Lake Dunstan.
This historic Main Street was flooded to make way for a dam burying historic buildings dating back to 1860’s.
Some of original buildings still remain half submerged and the rest were restored or reconstructed.
Stroll along the lakeside and indulge in the cafe, and shops where local artisans sell and produce their works .Learn about the history before the town disappeared under the water .
You can park your car at top and walk few hundred meters down to lake side.I have been told that on a clear day when waters are still from a height you can still see the buried village under water.
J.
A tapas bar with seating near the waters edge would be good on a nice day. Closest thing to it is the Office, but they don’t seem to be able to have seating out front :(
E.
It has been 5 years now we are living in NZ and we always just drive past Cromwell on our way to Queenstown/Wanaka. This time we decided to make it our destination and spend 3 days there on Waitangi weekend. It was awesome. The Heritage Precinct is worth a detour. Lovely historic buildings on a waterfront lake.
D.
Neat slice of history - from conception to being on the move as it made way for the lake. Worth a backtrack if doing the Lake Dunstan trail for coffee and bacon butties
B.
A real gem of the Cromwell area. Nice place to stroll around on a sunny day, coffee shop with outdoor seating. Neat old buildings and big grass area by the water
R.
Take a walk down memory lane in this 19th-century lakefront part of town. Many of the structures still stand in their original form. Visit ruins and relics of Cromwell’s rich gold mining history, see photographs of pre-dam Cromwell (before Lake Dunstan), check out an old printing press, horse stables, wagoners, blacksmith’s quarters and old communications systems. Enjoy a coffee as you take in mountain-lined panoramic vistas over the lake, all the way out as far as the Remarkables. An assortment of restaurants, cafes, and pubs to choose from. Family and dog friendly.
A.
Lovely spot to visit when passing through or staying in Cromwell... beautiful scenery.
S.
Our group stopped for a short drink stop, the owners were friendly welcoming and aptly filled everyone's orders quickly and catered for hot drinks as well.
A.
What a wonderful place lots of different arts n crafts a great cafe n lovely people. On Sundays there is also a market which is really gd
M.
A beautiful and picturesque little town that is worth a visit for people who enjoys history or simply wants to relax. Take time to read the history or just go to the cafe in the middle of the heritage town and have a chat with the owner if he's not too busy. A place that is definitely worth a visit.
T.
Interesting place. Lot of history.
K.
Clean and tidy area and the buildings are a great replica of what the old town used to be like. Quirky shops, bar, restaurant and cafe. Also interesting museum with photos and information on all the original shops before the flooding.
J.
When the Clyde Dam was completed in 1992 it flooded Cromwell's historic town centre. Fortunately, many historic buildings were disassembled before the flooding and have since been rebuilt in a heritage precinct beside Lake Dunstan. While some have been set up as period museum pieces (stables and the like), others house a few good cafes, galleries and some interesting shops.
When passing through Cromwell, it is worth stopping to visit the Cromwell Heritage Precinct. It is interesting, informative and full of history. Each building is identified and its history explained.
P.
This place is amazing. You can see old Cromwell here. There is a cafe , art gallery and nice place known as the transpire fibre studio .
Oh the transpire fibre studio is being run by a Malaysian lady. She is funny and cheerful. Do check our her store.
If you are here for photos for your Instagram. Thai is the right place for you
R.
I usually don't bother with Cromwell, but stopping here in the heritage precinct for lunch was a great idea. Beautiful day, great outdoor seating overlooking the rivers and the food and service was top notch. Don't waste your time in the mall when you can have a better experience at the Riverside.
N.
A good walk in history, free of charge.... Nice place to sit by the lake and enjoy food from two cafes on the precinct...
Note: dont waste your $1 in the coin machines at blacksmith/other areas, these little suckers dont work.
G.
Been here before and always enjoy looking at the old town, just a pity the weather wasnt a bit better this time.
L.
Very quaint and beautiful scenery . Enjoyed having a beer at Amandos kitchen 😋
S.
Fantastic place to wander about the old buildings, grab a coffee, swim, relax and enjoy. Loved it!
R.
A secret place to explore at Dunstan lake area. Great place to take photos with your family. Very friendly atmosphere. Very authentic looking replica of old Cromwell Business district.
D.
A must stop New Zealand town. The damming of the river had volunteers recreate the old time Cromwell on the banks of the river. A true gem.
S.
Super cute little spot to explore, eat and relax to break up any trip
M.
I really enjoyed visiting, lovely boutique shops and great coffee at "the office" I was there on a Sunday morning and there was also a market with live music.
J.
Nice little area showing historic buildings that were relocated
A.
What a wonderful piece of history to visit. The market day was lovely.
K.
A lovely artists community in a historic town with a wild back story. The juxtaposition of a shopping center among historic artifacts and vignettes of an older way of life was novel, but a bit unsettling.
W.
Neat wee place to explore with beautiful views of the lake. Shops open a bit later but there are interesting things to find inside.
J.
This place was totally amazing. Better than Arrowtown! No one there and plenty of information of what happened to the township in Cromwell.
W.
Very well preserved and beautiful historical place!
R.
Simply awesome place to visit , so much history and awesome shops that are very interesting to visit with locals with so much knowledge and very friendly
J.
A surprise find is the Cromwell heritage precinct for a stroll and coffee overlooking the lake
J.
Interesting village to spend time looking through. No charge to look at Historic buildings. Best attend during business hours
j.
Great place Burkes pass to stop off to see heritage stuff
J.
Very large area with many buildings restored to their former glory. Lots of them have been kept at the original eg smithies and bakery. Others have facades kept but are now cafes and art galleries. A great stop in cromwell down on the river front. Amazing how different the landscape is since the construction of the dam. Would recommend you stop here next time you're in Cromwell!
г.
Nice historical place. This is a must place to visit when passing Cromwell.
G.
lil bit of old skool Cromwell history awesome
S.
Some nice old buildings still being put to use with modern retailers, a bit of craft and some displays. Waterfront location and a Farmers Market the day we went
N.
Unexpected super cute historic district by the river. Great place for a coffee and enjoy the view
G.
This is a work in progress but definitely worth a stop on your way through to Queenstown or Wanaka. A well curated old town that is not on the scale of Arrowtown but just as beautiful and a lot quieter
J.
Beautiful place in Cromwell to go for a walk, have a coffee in one of the bars/restaurants or cook in the public barbecue next to the church.
M.
Really cool place with a beautiful landscape! There is a little market there on Sunday mornings which was awesome.
e.
Really loved it, especial place. The cafe has good tasty food as well afodarble from 11 to 13 bucks a plate. Alot of history. As well there is smithgold shop, to buy jewerlly as well a lovely shop that sells hand made lavender soaps.
A.
Nice little market with a variety of local items and some lovely little shops on the lakeside. Great spot to spend a. Hour or two
H.
Small town, good for a short walk around the area. Quiet and calm place with tiny lovely shops around.
J.
I Rode the Dunstan trail into Cromwell, well done tea.m it is a beautiful ride.
D.
If you like beautiful scenery and history Cromwell is worth to see. 50 mnts drive from Queenstown and very easy to find, there is a few of interesting place like Car Racing Museum, And Gold mining, and Fruit stall (if in the season) on the way to Cromwell so if having plenty of time stopping at those places can be an option.
Cromwell situated in front of the waterview , old buildings and if you need an explanation in some of the building you can put $1 coin in the machine provided to hear it or grab youself a pamflet about the town .
There is two eating place in Cromwell Heritage site. One of them is Armando's Cafe beautifully set up , friendly staff, lots option for heavy meal (pasta, risotto etc) and also lighter meal option. I chose capucino and Cinnamon Scroll ..they're so yummy. Worth to try and good coffee too.
A.
This site is great but such a shame there isnt more retail development down there. I think the potential is massive and would give lakeside Queenstown and lakeside Wanaka a 'run for its money' !
J.
Such a beautifully restored area of old Cromwell with boutique handcraft shops, cafes, well developed picnic areas around the lake. A "must visit" area.
S.
Nice area to explore, some shade to sit in when it gets hot, cafe was very busy
J.
Closed when we visited but would be a good spot to stop and stroll when open
C.
Great selection of shops and history here. Farmers Market well worth the visit on Sundays with live music, local crafts and food.
Z.
This small village off the main road is definitely worth stopping for. We were lucky enough to visit on a market day and got to enjoy some beautiful cinnamon scrolls. We grabbed some coffees as well and walked around the charming precinct, which was fairly busy but not bustling. The little shops are quaint and you can quickly learn about the history of the area. We spent far longer than we thought we would here and really enjoyed the friendly laid back nature of the market stall holders and shop owners. The friendly cat in the back alley didn't hurt either!
B.
Interesting and worth a visit.
S.
Great town very nice small shops hope it stays that way
H.
Awesome little heritage showcase of the original Cromwell area. Preserved and presented well for future generations
M.
Amazing to see a past time reproduced and in great working condition. Well worth the visit
W.
Very relaxing place to take a look if you are here. Small cafe on site with good coffee and beautiful view, also some historical buildings.
F.
Nice walk through a series of rebuilt part of the historical town centre. The walk is nice and gives a chance to look at how settlers lived in the 1800s. Unfortunately the shops were all closed when I went (national holiday).
c.
Interesting well preserved and informative buildings, exhibits and historical details. Great cafes, restaurants, and service
S.
This is a very interesting place to visit. There are many items to read regarding this historic precinct and how the original shops are submerged. They collected a lot of the fixtures & fittings & have rebuilt this above the original streets. A very worthwhile visit.
S.
Good on Cromwell for taking the time to preserve these buildings set in very pleasant surroundings.
E.
Nice place, piece of history. No cars allowed there.
C.
This place has a beautiful energy about it- u could spend a whole day here.
J.
Blast from the past old Cromwell buildings life in the old days very interesting place to visit
C.
Beautiful, picturesque place with nice shops, galleries and places to eat. Very nice (and quite busy) farmers and craft market on Sunday mornings. Don't forget to have a look at the museum in town if you want to know more about what happened to the original Old Cromwell.

J.
Very nice, quiet and peaceful place.
F.
Enjoyed walking around here. Buildings and toilets are well maintained.
J.
We had no idea how interesting Cromwell was. We just regret we didnt get to spend more time there. The Heritage Precinct had lots to offer. The lady in the Information Centre was extremely helpful, thoroughly enthusiastic, and also was very happy to give information about where we were going to.
B.
Great bakery for a very tired but happy cyclist. Beautiful weather. Very friendly locals.
r.
A short visit is sufficient to see the old buildings of this heritage. It was also nice for a short break having coffee at one of the restaurants.
E.
Didn't expect so much since it was free, but amazingly, it was out of expectation. The buildings and atmosphere really nice, just have a stroll and relax at the river side to spend our evening there
Z.
Great Market place. Nice weather and beautiful Instagramable old buildings.
S.
Was interesting to see and read about how it was before the dam and now. Informative plaques
K.
A wonderful reason to stop over at Cromwell. Take in the rich history of what life was like in "the old days", or just simply sit by the sweet little wharf and take in the best Central Otago has to offer. Tip: Bring some treats for the Heritage mascot Fatty the cat, and grab yourselves a few almonds from the almond tree (if you are tall).
J.

I think the people of Cromwell should be proud of this piece of history. It was great grabbing a coffee from the cafe situated in the old seed and grain store building and walking around the "old town". Our daughter loved the old stables and horse drawn carts.
R.
Nice to be able to see and read our small Towns history

A charming spot for a walk, and ice cream or coffee and looking round old Cromwell
M.
The place is beautiful. It gives me the ancient times vibe, small old buildings along the side of the lake are magical. Each one tells a story.

Visited the Sunday market - mostly preserves, woolley goods and country fare. The rest of the precinct is that part of the old town that wasn't flooded.

J.
Fun to walk around and take in some history
S.
Wonderful place to go and visit and read the footprint path.
C.
What a beautiful recreation of a historic Cromwell street! They essentially preserved the most beautiful houses back in the 80s when the original street was destroyed as a result of a damn project. The houses have now been converted into small businesses including shops, cafes and restaurants. There is also a small artisan farmers market every Sunday between 9 - 1. We can recommend the fresh pasta shop in particular!
R.
Great area and we'll worth the visit...
Great coffee and carrot cake and also an glass designers shop with fused glass and crockery ornaments and personal jewelry....
G.

R.
We visited late in the day but its so worth stopping to see this sweet wee place, loved the horse! Autumn colours are beautiful and pleased to see old roses were also rescued along with historic buildings that are all in use.
D.
It was interesting enough, as these "heritage" type attractions go...
E.
Very cool little historical area. I've driven by several times but I'd highly recommend stopping for a visit. There are lots of little historical buildings with signs explaining what the buildings were used for along with manikins displaying daily activities. Interspersed with these are arts and crafts shops and nice little restaurants and cafes. It well exceeded my expectations.
S.
Nice old part of town. Most (all?) the buildings have been moved and reconstructed here.
C.
Very cute historical town.
F.
An interesting, picturesque part of town
j.

Like a walk in the wild west. Bring your Stetson.
s.
Beautiful day in a beautiful place. We ate nice food at cafe by lake then rode bikes along lake side trail, pretty easy going. Cute ducklings fun to watch on lake. Clean toilets along way. Interesting "old town buildings " with info about them. Not crowded, very plesant.
G.
Loved the old village setting.
S.
Quaint and different ...would recommend visiting
S.
Such a nice place to visit and walk around. The little cafe was cosy, and coffee very nice.
S.
Old heritage buildings moved to the lake shore. Spent a pleasant hour here wandering around, reading the history. Gift shops and cafes look to be popular, although didn't have time to try.
B.
A step back in time, a lovely stroll through the old stores now stocked with fabulous art and other wares.
Then by a coffee, icecream or beer and sit overlooking the beautiful lake.
d.
Beautiful old stone buildings
K.
Cute place consisted from buildings which were had removed before dam flooding and then put back renovated. You can find there cafes, galleries and a museum with many interesting information. Public toilets well equiped and big. Many nice spots for picnic right by the river.
K.
Great spot and arts and food.
A.
Such a cool place, lots of interesting museum style building displays, gift shops and galleries and a lovely view over lake Dunstan. It seems hard to believe that some of Cromwell was buried in water during the 1970s. There was photos of what the town looked like before it was buried. Great place to visit for school groups, travellers, tourists, families and researchers.
N.
Nice visit to see what it was like in the past. Pretty views over the lake.
J.
Loved being able to walk through history
A.
The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was that the shops and galleries were closed... But it was boxing day after all. Will look forward to going back when everything is open to have a good look around...
j.
Interesting place, on the banks of a lake with great views of the mountains

Had some time to kill in Cromwell so went for a walk and ended up in the Heritage Precinct. It was cool having a look around. I arrived after the shops had closed but it was still a great place to check out. There is also a great view out over the water and plenty of places to have a seat and enjoy the area.
V.

A gem hidden!! Really enjoyed a stroll around, mindful that the buildings are mostly being used!!
P.
This is a little treasure of a spot. My favourite things are the warf and gallery. Beautiful place to take photos and peruse awesome shops with slightly more interesting things than usual. A real gem.
R.
Worth a visit, with a number of great shops & eateries.

Lucky to visit on a beautiful sunny day. The history of the Old town is well documented and preserved, really interesting, also free. Nice eateries there too.

Something amazing to see, a piece of history reconstituated
R.
Take the time to wander back in history all for free. Dine in one of the restaurant and enjoy the scenery. Farmers markets is on Sunday which is the perfect time to visit it's all worth while.
G.
Its ok, do like the upgrades over the years as Cromwell has grown. Limited eateries in the area after 4pm which is a pity.
D.
Outside Seed and Grain cafe. Lovely setting 👍
D.
We enjoyed the lovely shops, reading the educational signs about the history, the beautiful reconstructed buildings and sourunding.
Totally recommend to do a short stop if you pass Cromwell and have a break.
P.
Great place very impressed well worth a visit
C.
Love this place, a look back at old Cromwell on the edge of Lake Dunstan
S.
Looking better now after a bit of Lakeside clean up.
A.
We love walking around the Cromwell Heritage Precinct with our dog. Sitting outside one of the cafes with a coffee, beer or wine looking out over the lake is a great way to spend the afternoon.
Only downside is that it's not very active for a tourist spot. Sometimes you wouldn't even know shops are open. Perhaps we only go on Sundays and it's quieter then, but for a tourist attraction it's a bit odd.
It is still worth a visit though.
a.
This was super humbling and we loved it
D.
Lovely little place to visit
M.
Great coffee and facility’s.
J.
This was a great stop on our trip from Queenstown to Oamaru. We enjoyed wondering around the precinct and browsing through the shops. The beauty of the lake is the icing on the cake of the whole experience

Lovely spot with some history behind it. Stopped for a coffee and bite to eat at one of the cafes which was reasonably priced and good food and coffee. There are a few art galleries and it's right by lake. Great place or families.

Nice and quiet not like a lot of other places in Central 😊

Good to see that they had preserved things without getting to commercial with it. Enjoyed the views if lake dunstan. Especially the boys catching trout while boats were going past.
D.
Been here many times great way to spend some time. It is not large and there is no entry fee so a great place to go and chill. It has a restaurant pub and cafe so so something for everyone.
H.
This is a neat place to visit and get the low down about the area. Lots on display. I took my time and spent s couple of hours just wondering as round taking it all in. Staff are friendly and the toilets very clean. Highly recommend
m.
I used to call here prior to the dam being built back in the 70s..
The wee historical town is a recall of our yesterday years.
There's a lovely cafe there an sitting outside enjoying the view of the lake adds to the experience

L.
Cozy place, good view of the lake and a good feeling when you stroll around it, there are handicraft shops and a cafe to pass your time in. Worth a visit but not a must-see
A.
Nice place to look back in time.
P.
Beautifully preserved part of old Cromwell Town after Lake Dunstan drowned Old Cromwell to create Clyde hydro dam.
J.
The old days...death, work, diseases and no wifi
W.
Many of retailers were shut despite advertised market day. Poor show on behalf of retailers that couldn't be bothered opening. Doesn't help Cromwell's cause when competing with its neighbors (Wanamaker and Queenstown) to attract visitor dollars.
T.
Loved Cromwell! Lovely lithe town! Eat so much cherry! 8 bucks for a kilo! Can u believe it!?
E.
Really interesting piece of history and well kept and well laid out. Definitely worth a visit and to remain a significant and protected part of the area.
L.
Apart from losing a couple of dollar coins in the displays that didn't work this was a really interesting place to learn about the sunken town.
R.
Such a cute historic town. Lots of buildings along a scenic lake with sweeping views of the distant hills. Especially beautiful in the Autumn.
D.
A nice show of old worldy buildings and equipment, old by New Zealand standards, with one set up as a cafe with good food and coffee. Plus outside seating looking across the lake.

A trip to Central Otago wouldn't be complete without a visit to the precinct. Best sandwiches in New Zealand at Grain and Seed. Always love popping in to the lavender shop for soaps and creams. Farmers Market on Sundays an added bonus.
P.
If you are in the area on a Sunday morning between Labour Weekend and Easter you should not miss the Cromwell Market. The produce available is excellent. The french cheeses, fresh breads, cakes and buns, Swedish favourites, Relishes and even things for your dog. Well worth a wander followed by a coffee and a ramble through the old town shops everything you want but don't need. If you want more go to Tarris north from Cromwell to the shops at the gas station and Mrs Robinson's 200 m north again. Well worth the extra few kms to pick through the offerings.
F.
