Awesome place! Very detailed and learnt a lot about gas holders and how they were used. The engineer workshop is full of engines and machines and all fully functioning.

While not an engineer, I have some ability to appreciate engineering. I have a particular respect for very old engineering, because so much was achieved with so little, compared to today. It was a rainy day and having most of the exhibit under roof was also nice. I visited the museum for an open day. The boiler was running and the volunteers at the museum pressured up 5 different steam engines to show them in gentle action. A black smithing shop was also in action and several families with children under 10 were showing their fascinated primary school kids things they would never have seen before. The staff and volunteers were all enthusiastic about their interests and I learned some amazing things, both about the history of dunedin and early engineering and industrialisation. How reticulated gas was governed throughout Dunedin was amazing. I would recommend this to any family looking for an hour or two seeing some amazing things that their kids will love. There's a cafe on site but that wasn't operating the day I went.

Cool place if you're into engineering and are happy to read signs. Could do with a good tour guide. Running okay considering its a volunteer setup

It would have been better if some of the machines were functioning

Visited during a steampunk DIY event, great for the kids with enthusiastic steampunkers and also a wonderful science demonstration. The machines weren't running but was still very interesting and I would definitely return another day to see them in action.
I thought the price was very reasonable at $5pp and under 12s free, much cheaper than some less interesting experiences.

Great place for kids or groups to learn , if you book in your group you can arrange morning or afternoon tea , also great just to take the family on those rainy days.

I am a member of The Dunedin Gasworks Guild of Gadgeteers - Steampunk Dunedin. We are often involved promoting the Dunedin Gasworks Museum. The museum has some working machinery and is one of two working gasworks in the Southern Hemisphere. It is a great place to visit for all age groups. Amazing photos can be taken here and they have a certain Gothic quality. Come and visit and see for yourselves.

Very well preserved steam powed gas works. The steam operates and the engines do run. They run events as well as black smiting lessons in the forge area.

Great history lesson about an unusual piece of NZ industrial history.

The Dunedin Gasworks Museum offers a fascinating insight into how the city's reticulated gas system worked from the late 1800s to late 1900s. It's New Zealand's only remaining example of its kind.

Even though the machines weren't running, we were still given a personal tour of the works. Most informative !
