Great art Gallery with beautiful art work and many choices of artists. There's a shop and cafe in there too.

More to come

Free art gallery with some interesting pieces and collections from international, famous artists to local, up and coming artists. Toilets and an arty gift shop. A must visit if you like art and have an hour or so to spare.
R.
A great place to spend a day getting lost and finding yourself again. Impressive building with well structured wings of different themes and time periods. Some rarer pieces are also featured. Interactive exhibitions are a nice touch — like the long rainbow hammock, so long you’ll have to roll across it repeatedly to get out. Visit the loose tea exhibit at the end for a refreshing reward with a view over the city — a welcome treat after the hours you’ll spend on your feet meandering around. A definite recommend in Dunedin City Centre.
C.
Free gallery which is nice. Lovely place, easy layout. I really enjoy the classic paintings. Some of the modern and native ones not for me .
y.
Thank you! A handsome officer, in the most difficult time to help us, give up your rest time to come back to help me find the keys, forget to ask your name, you are a good man, I hope God bless you! Thank you again on behalf of my family.
P.
Really enjoyed my time at the gallery, was bigger than I thought wow great place to showcase the art. Our favorite was walking through the spectacular hammocks and finding the beautiful tea room. Amazing ❤ In a stunningly bright, windowed room overlooking the Octagon we enjoyed making our own tea with the choices in our table. This is a Must Do. 👍👍👍👍👍
J.
There are many things to see, I loved their contemporary paintings. Bathroom is a bit too far and hidden.
R.
Unexpectedly, this was our favourite visit spot in Dunedin, with some (conservative) modern art, great gift shop, friendly staff, and nice ambience. Would recommend to anyone passing through, could have a thirty to forty five minute visit here, and if you have more time spend one to two hours here easy!!!
L.
Nice place! So many paintings, they are worth a visit. while also some modern arts, it’s difficult for me to understand.
T.
Friendly staff amazing artwork, spacious inviting art gallery.
Awesome playing space for children.
C.
So appreciative of the work that was done many years ago, to present a gallery of this stature. In Dunedin. Subsequent generations have been the net beneficiaries of the vision that was established and that we can continue to enjoy today. Thank you.
G.
Even my dad who’s not that keen on art (more so doesn’t get it) enjoyed his time here ! Not too much going on , but just enough :) definitely worth the trip

(Jan 2020)
A lot of paintings to see, I had a really good time here.
R.
Lovely airy building. We enjoyed the permanent world collection on the ground floor. Unfortunately didn't have time to look at the special exhibitions. Staff were welcoming and helpful.
E.
It's not too challenging, but definitely a staid regional gallery with very good collection of New Zealand and 20th/21st century works. The self-portrait of Rita Angus is impishly charming in its seriousness, and dripping with modernist aesthetic. There are pictures and objects in here that will win you over (Thanks Rita)...
G.
Fabulous venue with all the twists and turns to see the awesome display of artworks. Thankyou
H.
Fantastic value for money (admission is free), with a collection that far exceeds the reach of many similarly sized cities’ public galleries. Exhibitions are rotated regularly in both the permanent collection — which boasts pieces by Monet, Turner, Constable, Tissot, as well as the NZers: Hotere, McCahon, and Goldie — and upstairs with the more… modern stuff.
A.
We go here all the time. Interestingly enough last time we were here we met a Scotsman who informed us that the name Dunedin in Scots actually means Noisy Hill of Sand. Slange.
G.
Some really interesting pieces on display, everything from classical oil painting to bronze sculpture and moving images. While we were there, there was a piece exploring lost role models for indigenous youth which was really powerful and had an amazing soundtrack
a.
This place was amazing loved the art plus it is free entry
Z.
Helpful staff and great range of gorgeous art
L.
A cute little galary. It's for free. Totally worth a visit!
D.
Really enjoyed my visit well worth a look
C.
A great place to spend some time with the family. The interactive works were awesome and our 7 year old son loved them.
d.
Highly recommended, definitely the highlight of the city. Free entry, lots of artworks are worth of watching & knowing.
H.
Nice afternoon spent wandering around with my whanau.
K.
Free entry. Can store your bags at reception. Super friendly receptionist and staffs too!
S.
What a terrific gallery, well, Dunedin itself is terrific! I wish I could have stayed longer.
D.
Very good collection. Worth a visit.
A.
Really nice gallery with some wonderful artwork, both traditional and contemporary.
R.
Excellent presentation of some terrific works. An unexpected pleasure
R.
Lovely friendly staff, but don't crowd you when you're looking to have a quiet afternoon. Great exhibits, love the range of art displayed and how it gets updated regularly. Often has hands on exhibits, great for families with kids!
F.
Awesome place to come and visit and enjoy the art works with family, Great customer service.
Parking can be tricky at the front during the day times.
R.
A special exhibition of contemporary Chinese art, top quality works, impressed!
R.
I loved my visit to the gallery, and even came back a second day to see an exhibition again. There is a permanent collection and temporary exhibitions. If you are looking for interesting gifts for yourself or others, stop by the shop. Free entry. Friendly staff.
A.
Great venue, staff,food, and displays
N.
Due to covid not allowed to use toilets
C.
Good range of art in an appealing space. Only ground floor was available due to changing exhibitions. Kids space was great.
N.
Very cool to check out! Loved the motion exhibits!
B.
Mix of modern, contemporary and traditional arts
My son loved the magnetic wall experience
S.
This is a lovely Public Art Gallery which has free entry. This is a small gallery that holds a fabulous collection of works by worthy artists, including works by local New Zealand Artists. It was a real pleasure to wander through here. The staff were helpful and knowledgeable. Another added pleasure was the gift shop near the entrance which stocks cards, books, jewelry, scarves and other handicrafts. We purchased a colorful silk scarf here, designed by a local artists. Well worth a visit.
J.
Absolutely wonderful! The gallery and peaceful and quite and oh so very warm! Perfect for the rainy winter days.
I love how kids can get creative and explore art using different senses in the little play area. The gallery is divided into sections and contains lots of pieces from all over the world; theres is a New Zealand are, a Japanese area, European, Australian and more. Pieces are interesting, learning about the mediums and techniques used to create each piece and the history behind it all.
R.
Lovely to see the exhibition from the gallery's own collection refreshed and rearranged. It is such a wonderful collection and we are so lucky in Dunedin. Nice friendly staff on the front desk too.
M.
Beautiful place to visit, even if you're not a fan of art. The experience will undoubtedly not disappoint. The giant hammock, fishing net, and tea rooms are just a few of the installations that are a must visit.
N.
Always beautiful exhibitions loved our visit there these school holidays
R.
Bit tired in my view , gallery needs a refresh,
l.
Very strange mix of Renaissance, contemporary kiwi and Japanese art. The collection doesn't reflect Dunedin's history; it's more like a private collection. When I went however, there was a very interesting exhibition of China artists. Not presented in the best way but I guess Google works.
P.
Nice spaces. Well worth a visit.
G.
This is a classical art gallery right in the heart of the CBD. It has free entry, good information counter. The range of art on display is good. Everything from old masters to modern art
There is a restaurant attached and good central City toilets should they be needed.
Car parking the only issue but there are multiple story car parks near by
P.
We both enjoyed the old paintings on the ground floor and there are even some from the great masters. I found some of the paintings really enjoyable to see the talents of painters 100's of years ago. Spent a good 45 minutes wondering around. Then we went to the first flour that was full of many variations of the same theme. Lots of black and white lines, less than 10 minutes later we were out. Free to look round. Stars relate to the ground floor.
P.
Some really impressive pieces
M.
Worth coming in for the fabulous and notable art collection. For a small gallery, it has note worthy classical artist and famous New Zealand artists. The small gift shop has well picked cards, books and other New Zealand gifts worth looking at. The gallery can also host events and be booked for special occasions. We are proud of our gallery.
P.
Chill vibe, changing expositions. Nice (small) gift shop with original gifts.
P.
Great artwork here and the place is massive. It's free entry (donations based system). Although I disliked that the staff hovered over my group heavily as if we are going to steal something. I get they have to be vigilant, but they shouldn't follow right behind us, they should just watch from a distance. I just left shortly after because it was uncomfortable.
G.
A wonderful building currently housing a diverse display of art. Cafe and shop worth looking into.
A.
Weird as heck which is what art is meant to be I guess or not or maybe 🤔
A.
I love art and was amazed. They had paintings from Lowry, Gainsborough, Constable and Pissaro and many more. It's also free! ! Well worth a visit.
M.
T-34/85 sculpture was amazing
S.
Great art gallery. We went specifically for the Ralph Hotere exhibit. It was fabulous.
C.
A local art gallery with ever changing displays. Has a great kids art area.
R.
This was my second visit to Dunedin Art Gallery. It is a real privilege to have this gallery in New Zealand, and thank you to the founders of Dunedin Art Society for establishing this great gallery. With examples from the masters such as Monet, Gainsborough, and Constable, to more contemporary exhibitions, and a goodly number of New Zealand's best known artists such as Rita Angus. Frances Hodgkins hailed from Dunedin, so usually a good selection of her work - her father was one of the founders of the Dunedin Art Society. Much of her work is currently at the Auckland Art Gallery in a special exhibition.
L.
Situated right at the Octagon, this art gallery is a delight to visit. Making very good use of the space of this renovated building, the displays are well laid out. There are a large collection of old and modern artworks by NZ artists and also international ones. I particularly like e.g. the collection on Frances Hodgkins (not usually seen outside NZ). At the time of visit, a major exhibition on Gordon Walters: New Vision, Grahame Sydney: Etched in Time, Philip Jarvis: Toothpaste Tubes doing Parkour, plus some other modern pieces were all interesting to me. The Nova Cafe attached to it is nice.Recommended.
H.
Love coming here great free. Toilets oh well I do pay for them in my rates ha ha
V.
Good to have a walk in a rainy day.
A.
Really impressive and versatile collection of works. And a good mix of local artists and international. Spotted one Monet & a Picasso painting as well. It was a great addition to our time in Dunedin.
I.
I was really pleasantly surprised by the famous art here, well worth a visit!
M.
Very good gallery.
Interesting quality pieces in the exhibition and well displayed.
Good spaces for works of specific artists.
This gallery knows how to display good art well. Knowledgeable, helpful and interested staff.
Very convenient location.
A must!
A.
Okay, this is not the Met in New York nor the Louvre, but for what it is it is a good small collection. Whoever does the arranging of the pieces and the lighting should be congratulated. There were pieces by some famous artists, including Picasso, Constable, Nolan, Turner, Angus, Lowrey, and some other good artists whoe names I did not recognise. I particularly liked the Nolan one from the Ned Kelly series. The rooms are arranged according to various themes. There is modern art and some from early 20th and from the 19th centuries. The current Chinese exhibition was really quite interesting particularly the paintings in the classic style but made of built of tiny paintings of antennas, and skyscrapers. If you enjoy a short (~1 hour, for people who like galleries but don't study in great detail) gallery experience this one is really pretty nice. I will go each time I am in Dunedin.
G.
Beautiful paintings! The art gallery is super cool and well organised. =) It is free.
P.
Great facility wonderful exhibits and lots to explore! Just a pity I didn't have the time or money to check out the two paid entry exhibits.. keep up the great work!
R.
Visited here with wheelchair user and myself. Facilities and lifts generally excellent for us, though would recommend using accessible public toilets across the Octagon, as the number of exhibits here is large.
k.
I went with my daughter. It was a great experience. Very diverse
B.
Lovely space, nice art, wicked gift shop, and a cafe where you can inject your own filling into a huge donut. Also some of the biggest cakes I've ever seen served.
M.
Some lovely art, local and international, old and new. Great place for the whole family.
W.
