Fantastic place to visit, great piece of NZ history. Be prepared- you should remove shoes when in the house, we'll worth it though. And excellent coffee.
T. S.
It's fascinating that the tools made then are still in working condition. Good to see the origins of hays wire strainer.
Well worth a visit even if you're not into mechanics, my partner still found it very fun.
In addition to the museum, the cafe served very good latte and nachos.

Spent night camping in.paddock self contained. Nice little Cafe. Cost of camping free with admission to Hayes engineering and homestead
S. L.
Had the passion fruit slice and a flat white. Both superb. Fresh water also great - this place is hot! Also a thoroughly COVID compliant business - good to see
P. A.
Fascinating place with interesting history. Nice food and coffee available as well.

Nice wee place for coffee, the sandwich was beautiful! Little annoyed that the book I purchased was $6 dearer there than anywhere else I found afterward so I'd suggest looking around before purchasing books 👍 The staff were lovely.

Attended here on a day the old workshop was operational and took the guided tour. Really interesting. Highly recommend this option.
Weather was perfect too!

Was waiting for maid to come out and hang washing on line.looks like the family still live there.step back in time.good coffee and food.just a thought.maybe a small notice in little house/shop with tour price.

A highlight of our South Island experience. Hay lunch and then spent over two hours looking around. Wish I could have taken my Dad, he would have loved it too.

Interestingly restored homestead and workshops. Interesting to see all the old belt drives from the windmill for the machinery etc. Also loved the toy car garage

Unfortunately we were on a tight schedule, so could not take in all that was on offer here. We had hit it on an open day. Country music, BBQ and women spinning were the features to come to our attention. We skirted by this to look at the exhibits. The workshop was founded by Hayes who emigrated to New Zealand from Warwickshire and started making implements which would help him farm. He ended up selling his wares around New Zealand, employing men in the factory and employing salesmen and saleswomen to sell his wares throughout NZ.
On view with guided trips were the workshops. There was also the house to look around with the original contents and electrical wiring. Interesting cables and switches linking the power supply from the workshop generator to the house.

Fantastic historical nz site off the Otago Rail Trail. The shop is just amazing - perfect place to stop and buy some kiwiana gifts! Coffee is great too!

Wonderful place to visit lots of history and very interesting. The cafe has great coffee and food with the best outside setting to enjoy your coffee.

This was a great find and only a short detour from Ranfurly. Well presented slice of history in the main house and the workshop will keep engineering types busy for ages.
D. L.
Lovely food in a quaint setting. Only outdoor seating. Recomended
S. R.
Cool little slice of local history. Nice cafe and interesting displays.

Worth a visit to see some fantastic NZ Engineering history.

Nice place to stop at for a break while you're riding the rail trail
S. C.
Very interesting insight into how things were done by inventive sorts. The family home was very interesting too!

If you want high quality food and coffee, don't drive past this place without stopping. I consider myself somewhat of a connoisseur of NZ pies and the homemade chicken, leek, and fennel pie was as good as they get. Topped it off with a homemade custard square, which was top notch.
S. K.
Amazing food!!!!!! Good coffee! Especially when it is freezing outside. Good home made meals right off the track. Do not ride past this place without stopping! Loved it.
K. P.
Well worth stopping and view the engineering works and the homestead. Was a real experience to see what living conditions were like many years ago. Great food and coffee available. Great staff happy to share their knowledge of the area.
i.
Very cool....interesting..loved looking in the house..
J. C.
Simple but delicious food beautifully presented.
P. G.
Amazing piece of Kiwi history and well worth the visit. The backroad down the Ida Valley is also a good alternate route from Ophir.
S. G.
A lovely quaint spot to stop and relax. We enjoyed a lovely drink and some food in the cafe. Yummy homemade pies, pasties, toasted sandwiches (with chutney) and cakes served with cream. Good old fashioned service and friendly staff.
B. Q.
Great going back in history and seeing how they made tools etc.
N. Q.
Amazingly well-preserved and still working (at times) factory, with all sorts of machines run off a central power core.
The homestead and farm felt like the family had just left, a snapshot of another time. Really interesting stories of the family, business and premises. Nice cafe and little shop.
C. G.
Interesting stop on the rail trail. Was intrigued about the clothes line AND the really cool stand for the wash basket and pegs.... Why are they not in the shops today!!! Cafe was great.
D. R.
It's a must if you like a bit of history, tools and machinery - most interesting. Take aan hour an enjoy. And the food's great!
J. W.
If your attending for one of their open days, you'll be disappointed at the lack of explanation boards on the workshop.
Else the rest of the displays, plus Cafe are well worth the visit.
R. R.
Well kept historic family home and an enginering business with interesting information. The café has delicious food and drinks. A definite must do when uou cycle the Otago rail trail ♡
S. P.
Superb. Go on an open day when it's all up and running.

A truly historic and one of the literal birthplaces of "number 8 wire" engineering ethos commonly found in early NZ. The Historic Places Trust run this former engineering works establishment and it is kept basically in as original a condition as possible. The entire place looks and feels like the workers and residents are all at a tea break or a meeting somewhere else on-site and could return to their posts any minute. The main house is a wonder of advanced and clever inventions all well ahead of their time. Even if they're commonplace now. Many were very advanced for any NZ home back then.
It's 6 or so kms off the main road when driving by or right by the Otago Rail trail if you're cycling/walking that. Either way it's well worth a visit.
The more you look around, the more you'll see. So allow time in your schedule to have a good look round.
The Cafe provides the start and end point to the visit. They offer some great coffee and the food on offer is good too. So you can refresh yourself before or after your walk around.
Note the opening hours over the off/winter season are different from summer hours. When I first tried to visit it was a Tuesday in early October and they're closed on Tuesdays then. So check they'll be open when you expect to pass by. We made a special side trip to finally get to see the place in summer this time. And it is well worth the ($12 in Feb. 2020) adult entry fee. If you're an Historic Places Trust (HPT) member you can visit here and other HPT sites throughout NZ for free.

Ok if you are in to engineering stuff but not so much for ladies
W. T.
Nice food but no where to sit out of the rain
J. B.
Amazing coffees! And soooo much beautiful and interesting history! We spent over 2 hours wondering around and soaking it all in. I highly recommend you don't pass through Oturehua without stopping in for visit!
R. L.
Really interesting historical site. Amazing engineering ingenuity on display which is part of New Zealand's agriculture legacy.
The café is top notch also... Great coffee and yummy food treats plus quality gift shop.
P. S.
A neat cafe to begin an interesting tour of the engineering works. A rest stop while on the Otago Central Rail Trail. Staff are amazing!
J. W.
Great place to stop on the Otago Rail Trail. Lovely cafe with homemade goodies also incorporating a store that sells jams, preserves, crafts etc. The ladies at the cafe are very friendly and knowledgeable on the Hayes Family history. If you have time, it's worth paying the small admission fee to view the Hayes estate.
M. S.
Very well preserved historical homestead. There is a shop which serves coffee, tea and sweets. The service was great and the people give you a lot of information. Everything in the house is well documented. People can walk inside and feel what is was like to live in those days. The matriarch was a hard working lady who would ride her horse across Otago to sell wares they manufactured. Worth the day trip. Enjoy 👍👍👍
G.
What a interesting place, a joy to see the workshop and equipment. Coffee and food excellent
J. V.
Fascinating example of early NZ european engineering works including inventions such as the wire strainer. The family house is also interesting, not only for exemplifying the living conditions of early 19century colonial living but also for the gadgets and creations of an engineer's brain. A rail trail must see. Cafe closed as it was after 4pm.
J. J.
Great piece of family history preserved.
M. S. L.
So many things to explore and enjoy here for men, women and children. Great cafe too!
J. A.

S. J.
We we're lucky enough to have a bespoke tour with Ken Gillespie. Such an interesting museum with some inspiring collections
k. r.
Stopped for morning tea and best ever sausage roll. Great place great setting. Disappointed only vegetarian dish I fancied had peanuts in it.
R. a. J. L.
After four of us had lunch and made an item purchase for $40.00 we were then advised we had to pay $12.00 each to use the toilets which happened to be in the same area as the museum.
Overall we felt they are greedy and taking advantage of people wanting to use the loo.
M. J.
Amazing history and exhibits
T. K.

Where it all began for E Hayes & Sons. A cradle of innovation for farming tools and their manufacturing methods. A must-see for anyone interested in NZ's manufacturing history or early 20th century lifestyles.

Machinery running all day with an excellent commentary on the innovation of the pioneers with not only self sufficiency but in the design of farming tools that are still used today.
