Reviews of Monarch Wildlife Cruises & Tours
C.
Best tour I have been to. We saw 5 wild yellow eyed penguins and a whole bunch of other wildlifes. It's so amazing to see yellow eyed that close! I highly recommend this tour to everyone.
A.
An absolutely wonderful tour....Buddy and Tim were excellent hosts. Knowledgeable and humorous.
The whole experience provided by Monarch Wildlife Cruises was outstanding. We were collected by David from our hotel and travelled with him for 45 minutes to the departure point. He too was extremely knowledgeable , friendly and helpful. At the end of the boat trip, David was waiting for us to return us to our hotel.
I can not recommend this trip enough.
P.
Even in the rain, it was an absolute treat. The boat was comfy, had the option of sitting inside or outside. Both offering great views. We opted to be outside and were given rain jackets to help keep us dry. Managed to see 3 species of albatross, fur seals and their pups, blue penquins and lots of other bird life.
I.
Quite a cool afternoon on the water but great views of the Taiaroa Head. Not too many seabirds but watching 3 juvenile albatross circling was magic. Helpful and friendly staff on board and the skipper seemed to know everything. Thanks very much.
H.
Incredibly wonderful team, lovely time out on the boat! Would 100% recommend for locals and visitors alike.
J.
Wonderful afternoon/evening Peninsular Tour with Rob the guide. We explored the more remote beaches and wild life. Rob had amazing history to share. Highlight was watching a very weary Yellow Eyed Penguin slowly walk home with many stops. Eventually he (she) put his head back and called to the family. Then we saw the 2 teenage penguin kids and partner. He suddenly moved with energy to feed the kids. After a feed the kids just wandered off!
Great day. Throughly enjoyed the tour and would absolutely recommend.
H.
We did the hour wildlife tour and it was awesome. Well worth it. Staff were great at spotting all the birds and seals and very informative about them. Our 5 year old son loved it.
C.
Fantastic experience. We did the one-hour cruise from Weller's Rock and saw numerous species of albatross, hectors dolphins and fur seals. Staff were friendly and knowledgeable. Highly recommended!
K.
Wish we could put 10 stars! Buddy was fantastic and incredibly knowledgeable which enhances the experience. Tim and Cam were so friendly and enthusiastic. This is rare jewel in Dunedin and the crew make this a fantastic experience that everybody should do. To make it even better, the Albatross were out in force!
C.
An absolute epic outing on the Monarch boat! We started the experience in the bus to take us to the boat. Lots of interesting information from a very knowledgeable driver then we got on the boat where we were provided binoculars and warm waterproof jackets for the trip. We came a across Shags, all sorts of seagulls,a few albatross, one little blue pinguin, some fur seals and cherry on top when we were at sea we witnessed a beautiful humpback whale with her little one and a group of dolphins. What a day to be on the water. Thanks to the crew for looking after us so well and for giving us valuable information and making it such a great experience. Highly recommended!!!
ו.
Great experience, the guide was clear and cruise was fun!
C.
This is definitely a must do activity if you are in Dunedin. The boat driver is an excellent source of knowledge about Dunedin and the wild life. The boat is super comfortable and Aaron makes a great cup of tea. The wildlife is abundant and the scenery incredible.
N.
A fantastic day tour of the Otago Peninsula. Our tour guide Bruce was very knowledgeable and interesting. I really enjoyed the tour of the magnificently restored Larnach Castle. The wildlife tour of the bay brought us up close to seals, albatross and shags/comorants.
A.
We went on the Monarch Wildlife Cruise and Larnach Castle tour, the tour was fantastic from start to finish. Clean comfortable bus with excellent driver and knowledge and approachable tour guid providing information and answering questions along the way, also providing a guided tour of Larnach Castle which has been beautifully restored. The wildlife cruise was onboard the Monarch boat where warm jackets and binoculars were provided and the boats captain ensured everyone on the boat was able to see the wildlife in their natural environment and provide information along the way. All in all an excellent tour.
L.
I recommend going through Monarch Wildlife Cruises, to do their tours. I booked my Castle to Cruise tour with them and had a very wonderful experience, something I enjoyed doing and would go through them again.
C.
This was a highlight of our Dunedin stay. The weather was great & the crew so knowledgable & enthusiastic. We saw 4 or 5 species of albatross as well as other seabirds, fur seals & a sealion. The drive to the wharf was beautiful.A must do.
Z.
I had a wonderful day with the Monarch cruise team. Got to see the rich flora and fauna of Dunedin with them. The cruise on the Otago Peninsula was just amazing. Got to see the wildlife and beauty of the place. Jurgen was so well informed, and so was Jeff. Thanks to the lovely weather a well.
M.
Thank you for such a memorable day. My family and I booked the Larnach Castle and Wildlife tour. Our tour guide, Neil, was friendly and shared a wealth of knowledge about the area and history
as he guided us through Larnach Castle. After our castle tour, we were greeted by Nigel and Buddy as we boarded the wildlife cruise. Nigel provided interesting commentary as we marvelled at sea lions, fur seals, albatross, penguins and even a small shark. From binoculars, jackets and a covered in area, we were all well taken care of. We were even offered a hot drink and a savoury on our way back to the city (thanks Buddy). A welcome treat on a cool day. I cannot speak highly enough of Monarch Wildlife Cruises and Tours. It was a superb experience from start to finish and one of the best tours we have ever done! Thank you.
D.
We did the one hour albatross cruise and highly recommend these guys. Very knowledgeable, great range of birds. Better viewing than from albatross centre, especially seeing the nests. Loved the seals. Sea is quite rough but part of the fun.

I booked the Monarch Wildlife Cruise complete package for my Canadian cousins and myself in 2017. We went on their 50th Wedding Anniversary and it was a magical day. At 9am we went by coach along the Otago Peninsula to Larnach Castle where we had a tour of the castle and morning tea. Then we continued by coach to the Albatross Colony and Wildlife centre. This included a close up viewing of the albatrosses and also the disappearing gun at Taiaroa Heads. We also had lunch at the Wildlife Centre and then it was back on the coach to Penguin Place where we stood behind viewing boxes to see the Yellow Eyed Penguins on their nests. From there it was a short journey to the wharf where we boarded the Monarch for cruise on the Otago Harbour. Then we looked up to our right to see an adult Albatross swoop down off the cliffs catching a wind draft. Seeing that made you realise why they are called the Royal Albatross. Then to take the magic of the day to it's next level we looked to our left and there were a mother, father and baby Orca leaping out of the water again and again. They stayed with the boat and were reasonably close. We followed them for sometime before heading back to dock at Port Chalmers. The coach picked us up and we were back in Dunedin by 7pm. We went out for dinner to finish our day off. Thank you Monarch Wildlife Cruises for such a magical day!! A staff member told me that Orca are only seen a couple of times a year in the harbor. They must have known it was Bill and Pam's wedding anniversary!
A.
During our visit in Dunedin at the end of this March, we booked 3 Monarch cruises activities, Storytime Cruise for Litties and Young Ocean Explorer at the first day, and Monarch Wildlife Cruise in the second. we saw lots of albatross, sea lions, and a humpback whale. My 6 year-old son and I had a lot of fun.
Also i want to say thanks to their staff Trudy and their boss. We did not realise there is no bus service from city center to Wellers Rock Wharf, where is the start point/ finish point for Monarch Wildlife Cruise. so we took a taxi their in the morning. after finishing the activity, we decided to walk to the nearest bus stop, which is about 2-3 hours away for walking. after 2 hours' walking, Trudy drove her boss's car to catch us and said she would take us back to the city. she told me that her boss saw us walking, so asked her to help us. to let us see the most excellent view, she even chose another route.Big thanks to Trudy and Monarch Wildlife Cruises.
E.
EXCELLENT! An hour on the water, watching the magnificent albatross glide above the waves, the tip of its wing occasionally touching the surface. Friendly knowledgeable staff, informative commentary. Make sure to leave plenty of time if self-driving. We got caught up in traffic and the roadworks, and worried we wouldn't make it on time.
P.
We went yesterday and thanks to Aaron Pete for a wonderful trip. Very good commentary our grandchildren really enjoyed it too. Seen blue penguins Albatrosses Sea lions. Well worth the time and money to go. Thanks also to office staff who got us all sorted.
C.
It was a windy day however Captain Nigel was great at minimizing the discomfort of the tide and waves. His calm voice also shared his knowledge of local wildlife. September is not the ideal time for viewing but we did see Albatross and seals. Great trip out around the Lighthouse. Thoughtful to provide blankets and binoculars.
P.
Absolutely fantastic adventure. Calm waters in the harbour made for a pleasant cruise with great commentary and friendly crew. This is one great experience not to be missed. Will happily do it again. The mix of wildlife we experienced was just awesome.
J.
What a fantastic cruise we were on the last cruise of the day. And Buddy the skipper took us out to see a Humpback Whale. An absolute bonus. Value for money 10 out of 10. Crew 10 out of 10. We will be back to do it again.
R.
Fantastic tour, got to learn lots about the city and its history, fantastic tour of the castle with our very knowledgable local guide (Rob). Thanks so much!
Q.
Went on tne cruise following a visit to the royal albatross centre and the two were great tandem companions. It was great to have seen the chicks from the bird hide and then to get a much more expansive view from the water. We were welcomed by the crew and provided with warm jackets and binoculars to enhance our experience. Commentary was fabulous, pointing out different bird species and explaining facts about their habits and of course manoeuvring the boat to facilitate our encounter. In all, I saw at least 6 new bird species and felt very satisfied. I'd have only the heartiest recommendations for this cruise and Monarch's lovely crew.

Our family has done the Monarch cruise a few times and there is always something different to see. Today we had over a dozen albatrosses sitting in the water righr beside the boat! The commentary was great and the captain spoke slowly and clearly. Would definitely recommend!
B.
They picked me up exactly when they said they would, and actually dropped me off back at the front door of my hotel afterwards (I didn't exactly go in peak season, however). All the team were very friendly and knowledgeable, and did a great job of being informative and interesting, and most importantly, getting us up (reasonably) close to the wildlife. I consider my afternoon package to have been very good value for money, and wouldn't hesitate to book with them again if I get the chance.
L.
A fantastic afternoon on the water. Warm coats and warm drinks provided. The crew were excellent and went the extra mile to find us a whale. Wonderful! Wildlife seen - shags, albatrosses, gulls, petrels, fur seals, barracuda and a humpback whale. The captain knew to follow inbound fishing boats to spot MANY albatross. Some albatross flew so close to the boat we could have almost touched them! A highlight for sure. We also saw penguins on the mountain sides. The captain was great and it was an excellent one-hour tour! Thank you.
I.
Great hosts..great trip with lots of wild bird life and excellent commentary.
B.
I really want to give 6 stars. From the pleasant manner of the office to the staff on the boat, the great narrative during the cruise, complimentary tea and coffee, warm coats, savouries and binoculars then being taken in close to the wildlife with time taken to observe - this was a fantastic afternoon.
P.
Great wildlife cruise out of the Otago peninsula good commentary explaining different landmarks what bird life we where seeing. We where lucky enough to see some Albatross which they identified which types they where. We saw seals sea lions little blue penguins in the sea and on the rocks. On our return we visited the Yellow eyed penguins sanctuary which was really interesting. If you visit Dunedin are interested in wildlife this is a must.
G.
Amazing wildlife experience! We enjoyed wonderful close-up views of albatross fishing, swimming, and taking off from the water. Also excellent views of sea lions and fur seals on the rocks and little blue penguins in the water. The nature commentary was very informative and entertaining and complemented the trip perfectly. The wildlife seen would vary with the time of year, of course, so we look forward to a repeat visit. Highly recommended!
P.
Worthwhile excursion with this operator
Passengers are well looked after, with warm coats and binoculars, while onbord the vessel.
M.
Great tour experience to be had, both to Larnach Castle and out to see Dunedin's wildlife from the water.
Paul, the lovely tour guide to the castle, was a great source of knowledge about the castle and its surrounding landscape (and he spins some great yarns too!), while the two tour guides who took us out on the water were also full of fun and interesting facts about Dunedin's wildlife.
Everyone was very accomodating, going so far as to take myself and my group back into town after the tours were over.
Overall, would 100% use this service again.
M.
Amazing wildlife cruise for anyone looking to see albatross/seals. Our skipper/guide was extremely experienced and had a wealth of local knowledge in interesting areas (flora/fauna/historical) while also having a sweet beard.
d.
Amazing scenery. Albatross blue penguins shags seals & we were lucky enough to see a whale & dolphins. Staff very active pointing out where to look & very knowledgeable.
G.
Absolutely brilliant tour in early April. Brilliant staff, very well organised and the Royal Albatross and yellow eyed penguins were amazing to see. One of the best tours I have done ever. A must for visitors to Dunedin.
D.
We were picked up and taken to Larnach Castle and then on a boat to see animals such as albatross and seals. The weather was average - but definitely the best time to go see everything!! The staff were fantastic and the day was well organised
M.
Interesting boat tour, a little overpriced. Nigel, the Captain, did a great job explaining. The Combo with penguins was not a good choice end of February, no penguins to be seen. They should have told before that chances are low.
m.
I would recommend this to anyone wanting to experience more than just watching wildlife through binoculars. We were lucky to see various Albatross, Seals, Blue Penguin, various Shags. The staff are lovely and very knowledgeable, the boat tour was fun and got some great photos!
T.
Great time out with the family. Hot choc drinks for the kids. Very enjoyable.
J.
We really enjoyed our cruise. Joining my wife and I was another couple, so was a small number on the boat which was really nice. The team really knows their stuff. You don't feel like you are being pipelined through a tacty tourist attraction (eg the "official" royal albatross centre up the road with their tours). These guys were genuine and definitely worth it.
S.
Saw Hector's Dolphins, Royal Albatross chicks, Otago Shags and Sea Lions on our tour. More than we expected! Jurgen, the ship's spotter, was very knowledgeable and was happy to answer questions on the animals.
Buddy, the skipper, made the trip really comfortable and let us know when the boat was making a maneuver which was potentially going to be rough. My camera got pretty badly splashed during one move and Jurgen quickly handed me a towel to dry it which was a super nice touch.
We got on from Weller's Rock rather than from Dunedin directly, this gave us a lot of flexibility on the peninsula as it was only an hour cruise. Also appreciated being given coats and binoculars to borrow.
B.
Fantastic tour with very knowledgeable guides. Was able to see the majestic albatross' up very close, along with fur seals, hundreds of shags and terns and a penguin. Highly recommended
K.
Main focus is Albatross not my cup of tea. Wanted to see more dolphins & seals but that's nature so nobody's fault.
Was a good half day on the boat and the facts were very interesting. The lady made a mean hot chocolate too. :)
C.
I hesitated to book with them because I found the cost to be a little high but when you add up the price of doing all of the attractions individually it's actually very fairly priced. The tours are very laid back and we had a thoroughly entertaining host.
K.
You see a lot you do a lot and they offer you a lot including free cocoa at the end. Beat my expectations.
Y.
Great experience. Our skipper and guides were very knowledgeable and friendly. They tailored our guide based on our needs. Great service overall. I would highly recommend anyone to use their tour.
p.
We did the one hour wildlife cruise from Wellers Rock. Thanks for a great trip, an excellent setup. and thanks for turning on the weather!
M.
We really enjoyed our cruise for my sister's 21st, very smooth, chilled vibes and nice and warm for March with the plastic sides and heater

Great trip, can see different type of Albatross and other sea birds during the trip. The guide have good knowledge and very helpful!
D.
We were having a blast cruising through the harbour and spotting Albatros, sea lions and shags! Way better than the Albatros Center!
A.
Wow! was an amazing outing. Staff were great. Half price tickets for locals. Very informative commentary.
s.
The drive to the dock was gorgeous but rushed with no photo opportunities and the little boat was over crowded making seeing anything difficult
g.
They give you warm coats and binoculars for the trip which was really nice
