Reviews of Toitu Otago Settlers Museum
W.
Excellent free museum, a must do while in Dunedin. There are so many exhibitions about the history of Dunedin, how and why people came, early settlers, technology and the gold rush, and modern cars, home appliances, music and culture. It is very interesting and there is a lot to see. But everything is quite vague and nothing goes into a lot of detail. It left me wanting more! You can easily spend hours in there. Lots of toilets too as well as a cafe and nice gift shop.
D.
Lots of different types of exhibits to see. Unfortunately could not do interacted exhibits due to covid! A souvenir shop and Cafe at usual tourist prices! But other than that great place to visit
M.
Great collections of historical value. Staff are very pleasant. Great stop for visitors as you can leave your bags at the reception. 45 minutes may be enough to look around the museum. They also have a nice Cafe and gift shop by the entrance. If you are done enjoying the arts and history here, this museum is literally beside the Railway on one side and the Chinese Gardens on the other.
C.
Great museum. Nothing makes you feel old quite like seeing CDs and an iPad in a museum!
J.
Much better than I thought it was. The building from outside doesn't really represent how cool it is inside. Wide range of themes and epochs. Went with the family (including 4 and 6 yo) and it was really awesome I recommend!! PS: I recommend donating for the museum. They have this really cool machine where after you donate any amount, the pictures move and make sounds. Kids lived it. And we did too...
C.
Wow very entertaining museum packed with history and exhibits for all ages. We'll worth a couple of hours to learn the history of Dunedin. Well ✔ 👍
T.
Despite the idea that an early settlers museum would flop from its inception (as per the information panel), this has to be one of the best museums in the country. Up-to-date, informative, interesting and interactive, it's only made better when you actually see someone you're descended from, like the old bloke driving the car in my picture.
S.
Absolutely stunning place to visit. 3 hours was by no means enough time. I managed to learn plenty of interesting facts that I can add to my memory banks and the gift shop is sort of cool. I will visit again next time I'm here to see all that I missed.
P.
Great source of Scottish history and some very cool stuff from years gone by.
B.
Very good have visited a few times now when we are in Dunedin
C.
Couldn’t have enjoyed more, absolutely love the artifacts.
F.
It's a lovely museum. The entry is free. I recommend to go and check it out. Contains a bit of history about Dunedin and goes through the ages. You can spend a good 2 hours there. Afterwards you can buy something in the gift shop if you want to.
C.
This is an outstanding museum. However, it goes well beyond the rather anodyne notion of a 'setters museum'. Social and industrial history is well documented. It's very similar to the Museum of Liverpool at the Albert docks that enjoys a much wider appreciation of its installations. You deserve much more. What in God's name was the committee thinking when it chose the name that under performs what you have actually superbly curated? Ingestion of a collective stupid pill comes to mind. Cost of change offset by significantly increased patronage. True. Get it done. This year. Thank you...
M.
This museum is well worth a visit, was really impressed with the style and flow of the various themed sections, just loved it.
M.
I was killing time before my bus ride out of Dunedin and I stumbled upon this educational treasure. It had lots of interesting exhibits, from early settlers, clothing, to technology and pop culture. It was nice because it provided a good baseline understanding of the towns history without overwhelming me with information like some museums can do. It was exceptionally curated and it also had a number of interesting interactive pieces that seemed to amuse both adults and children. It costs a whopping $0 to enter, so by all means, go pay them a visit. You won't regret it.
P.
Lovely little museum. The entry is free so go and check it out. Has displays for the different time periods. You can spend a good two hours there. It also has a nice gift shop.
A.
The museum has interesting thematic threads. The organization of the exhibition is interactive and logical. There is a great cafe. There is a play space for children. You enter the exhibition through carved doors. Don’t miss the film which presents Maori legends. Don’t miss the bicycle exhibition. Find time to read the history about the European settlers. Try to feel the history of many cultures in Dunedin. For the end cafe with beautiful view for the factories. Which I adored.
P.
Excellent museum that is well curated and displays appeal to all age groups.
Very informative audio and video for each exhibit and the staff are helpful and on hand if you have questions.
It is excellent to see that the museum centres itself to Dunedin history rather than piece meal a number of other historical topics.
D.
Very nice museum with something for everyone. I specially liked the automotive department. One small criticism: the first part is too dark. If you're above 50 you will need a flashlight to see or read anything.
P.
An excellent museum showing the history of the joining of two main cultures, Polynesian and Scottish/European, in the growth of Dunedin. Their joint efforts throughout the last 150 years or so are well demonstrated in a variety of topical displays. There are some interactive displays to help entertain children, but not a great number. The museum also has an excellent cafe and gift shop. And it is FREE!! You can't afford NOT to go!
r.
Very good collection of memorabillia and artifacts from early settler times of old Dunedin.there is a cafe for refreshments and a souvenir store.the museum has a donation box for the entry fee.
Something here for all ages.
Very good place to be on a rainy day.
K.
Free entry! Great efforts for the detailed item displays and it’s chronological too. You can store your baggage at the reception securely with no charge :)
D.
This place is so inter active. There is a screen with before pic of buildings, you can then drag the present pic over it and see what has been changed or added to the building. It is free to enter but there is a donation box there, well worth while donating. There is this beautiful desk from the BNZ bank. It is stunning in real life. Great place for a wet day....kids have got a play room. But it is friendly and fun and interactive. A must visit for anyone.
G.
The Otago Settlers Museum gives a wonderful insight into early New Zealand history with it's excellent layout and numerous displays of life over the years. A great place to send hours absorbing it all and there is also a wonderful cafe to have some refreshments afterwards.
M.
This is a very good museum to visit in Dunedin. There are lots of different parts to look at. It is all done very amazingly and lots of cool things to learn. Some of our favourites were the room with all the portraits and the little tram you could go on! Very brilliant museum!
K.
One of NZ's best heritage museums. Large venue with great mix of historic artifacts (some you can climb aboard) along with state of the art digital interpretation.
J.
Great job New Zealand! Incredibly well thought out facility with many interesting stories and artifacts. This place speaks volumes to the Kiwis respect for their history and culture. Did I mention it was free... Go visit and leave a donation. Excellent work!
f.
Absolutely fantastic and fabulous place. This is a wonderful addition to Dunedin, worthy of a trawl through with or without children. 😀 Professional, intelligent and informative displays and information on show I highly recommend it, we took a whole afternoon to wander through and we learned a great deal about our country 😀
m.
Looked at our city heritage and history on displays about the Early Settlers from Great Britain for more information at the museum so enthusiastic.
N.
The way museums should be! Very informative and interactive. Presented in a modern way, allowing you to be informed and entertained without having to read for hours, but also delivering a lot to read if mire information are desired. No entry fee, but donations are welcome.
B.
Yery good museum would recommend everyone to visit and spend a few hours, well set out and informative 👍
C.
History stories and equipment with photos and vehicles all well presented.
A great place to spend many hours even with children of all ages
J.
Didn't plan to visit but turned out a best place in Dunedin! I was impressed with the size (it was bigger than my expectation), well organized displays, and the storytelling in this museum.
M.
This is huge, we only had 45 minutes and did not cover 25% of the beautiful and we'll presented interesting exhibition. You need to have at least a couple of hours to do it justice. And it is FREE
N.
3 1/2 hours great time.. So informative and interactive..
H.
This well-known Museum in Dunedin doesn’t bring the highlights to me.
The old heritage building and the new part haven’t been combined well, it looks like they are totally two individual parts. Particularly the connection part, its design and building material are failure from my point. The new part didn’t help highlight the classical beauty of the heritage building too.
V.
Having been to Toitu many times with preschoolers, I appreciated seeing some new displays... the vintage fire engine was a real hit with my 3 year old! And the new play space is excellent, with very comfy reading corner! Ka Pai Toitu!
p.
A lovely tribute to the settlers who landed in Dunedin many decades ago.
The place is surprisingly bigger than you would expect - with the many different facets of Dunedin life splayed out across different exhibitions. You are encouraged to interact with the displays via touch screens and larger than life buses where you can get on and pretend to be in a bus from the 1950s.
Extremely educational and well done to the folks behind this! Highly recommended!
A.
Our both kids loved the museum. They have a check list for kids to do while visiting, which will make the kids involved more and get interested. Although it wasnt the biggest museum, but we had lots of fun search around. It is free of charge, donation only. Street parking, or carpark next to it.
D.
Interesting place....Lots to look at so save a couple of hours. We enjoyed it and would recommend if you like history and museums. Good pieces on show
i.
I was generally surprise by this museum, small but full of things to see. Also very quiet, so you can take ypur time goong through some of the exhibitions. Good if you have some time to spare while wondering around Dunedin.
L.
This is an amazing museum. I wish I had more time to see everything in detail.
C.
Changed heaps, more modern since 20 years ago on my last visit, but still great for family history 😊👍
T.
An amazing place to visit in Dunedin. I would suggest it as a must do in Dunedin. Lots of informations, videos, artifacts inside the building.
Cafe and gift shop are there at the entrance.
A.
A rare find. Love the revamped museum. Didn't realize it is the oldest historical museum in nz. The old vehicles section was the best.
K.
This is definitely one of the best and must go museum! First of all, it is totally free and it has so much to see and play around with. I spent more than an hour here.. it was amazing. And the staff is so helpful and friendly. Please dont leave it at the last item to do before the day, it closes by 5pm. You might need more time to discover this beautiful musuem if you are a curious baby like I do.. :)
n.
Cut some extra time in. This museum is freaking huge! I wasn't expecting it to be so intense but wow it was quite the experience. Lots of interaction exhibits as well.
S.
I loved this experience. Very well thought out and very interesting. Much better than the Otago Museum (in my opinion).
C.
Although the admission is free, the collection and it's scale really stunned me. The vintage collections of vehicles and appliances are fascinating. I really enjoy the time there.
d.
Loved the place and it's history. Took us half a day and we still could not cover everything!! Will visit again.
R.
Went to the cafe. Nice, light and spacious space. We just for coffee and something. Had good coffee and nice muffin.
C.
Great museum. Good Otago Historical timeline. Interactive & interesting. Funny to see our own era depicted in a museum as 'history' .. must be getting old!
A.
Excellent museum, well laid out with really interesting exhibits. It took us a couple of hours to see most of it.
E.
After wondering in the museum, which you literally can spent hours in, I visited the cafe as well. Great Coffee and vegan chocolate zukini cake. Fair prices.
A.
A must if you're visiting Dunedin. Free entry, the museum takes you through the history of the area starting with Maori an European settlers through industrialisation to the present day. All on one level it's easily accessible with a nice cafe at the entrance. Allow about 90 mins for the museum.
L.
Interesting Museum
Located next to Dunedin Railway station
Free entrance but great information, worth a visit
M.
Amazing. One of the best and user friendly museums I have been to.
R.
Great Mueseum, Excellent interactive displays. Two hours was not really long enough to do it justice.
K.
This was an amazing family experience with so much history! We spent 2 hours here, highly recommended!
L.
What a great place! It will be interesting for grownups and kids. It is interactive museum. Take your kid and sit in an old tram or bus and watch a movie! Look at huge black horses or touch huge green stoun! If tired- sit at cafe.Toilets.and changing place for kids also available. And for those who would like to buy some souvenirs or just some cool stuff- they have a little shop too!
R.
Would love to spend days here searching family history. So much history to discover.
D.
The name Settlers Museum invokes stories of hardy Pākehā (European) settlers in a remote land but Toitū is much more than this. It tells the stories of the original settlers, Māori who arrived in their waka (canoes), through to the Chinese and Pākehā settlers of the Gold Rush era when Dunedin was the largest and most important city in Aotearoa/ New Zealand, through to the artists, musicians and fashion designers who make the Dunedin of today who make Dunedin as one of the coolest small cities anywhere. Well worth a couple of hours and a great way to get an understanding of the essence of Dunedin's DNA.
J.
Great museum in Dunedin with lots of history and beautiful designed. Recommended to visit if you are in Dunedin.
P.
Such a well done history of the area and easy to follow from the early settlers to modern days. Learnt such a lot about the region. Different rooms and stories to lead you through the passage of time. Plenty of interesting stuff for kids to take part in too.
S.
Very intersting Muesuem. Very shocked to see old 1950 and 1860's model kitchen, vehicles, tape recorders and biggest first computer. So nice. Must visit place
J.
Excellent museum. Lots of different exhibits and nice for kids to run around. Free entry but recommended $5 donation. We spent around about 2hrs here and could easily spend more without little ones! Really fun to explore!
m.
Fabulous Museum! Wonderful exhibits, from canoes (waka) to motorcycles, a steam locomotive, trams and even a trolley-bus. A must-see!
C.
An interesting display of early Otago history. A lot bigger display than anticipated. Well done.
J.
Wonderful Museum, we loved it! Could have spent another few hours here if we had time. So interesting, brilliantly laid out and has a great cafe and gift shop. We will be back!
S.
Beautiful museum with many interactive sections suiting young and old. The museum itself is free and highly reccomend a visit
L.
An amazing place to learn of Dunedin's history. The time periods cover settlement to circa 2007.
J.
The staff gave me permission to photograph the 1954 fire engine using my camera on a tripod. They were friendly.
E.
Loved it. Well presented easy to navigate and a trip down memory lane
M.
Great place tovisit and good cafe to catch up with friends.
s.
Great place, especially for younger children, for a rainy day. Located right next to the Dunedin train station, it's also got a train in display at the ground floor entrance. Staff were lovely, like get a work book with stickers and stamps at entrance to keep them busy and entertained throughout the visit. Souvenir shop is pretty unique too, which sales some really awesome stuff you don't see elsewhere. Easily spend an hour here, there's also a cafe on-site if you want to grab a quick coffee.
J.
Wow. I have nothing but praise for this amazing museum and its amazing helpful staff. Love my History. Love my Heritage
L.
Fun for the whole family, only takes a bout an hr and a half to see everything :)
P.
Great place to see some of Dunedins history and best of all, it's free.
Highly recommend for a leisurely wander, very uncluttered, clean and tidy.

A Fabulously Fascinating Treasure Trove of History !!! This wonderful museum is extremely well done and a terrific treat to explore. From its outstanding organization to its phenomenal presentation, the excellent exhibits are delightfully diverse, interesting, engaging and highly rewarding to experience !!!!!!!

Fantastic place to travel back in time and to indulge with the settlers’s life ... 100% recommend the visit .
C.
Excellent exhibits !!! We learnt the history of the native people, the arrival of migrant because of whaling and gold mining. We saw real horse carriages. The items from the past. The mock up of living space of the early settlers.
M.
Nice open museum, with good information on the items on display.
C.

D.
Great play to visit so interesting. Pixie land was great kids love it.
E.
I'm not a big museum person but I really enjoyed this place both times I've been lucky enough to go.
They have fun interaction based exhibits for all to enjoy with a section near the end that changes every so often. (1st time I went it was growing up through the ages, time after that was the Woman's Suffragettes exhibit I believe).
Would definitely have it on my list for a visit.
W.
So much details have been put into its display particularly the locals & histories. Five stars! Love all the museums in Dunedin city. They all make extra efforts to present the knowledge & histories to the visitors. Really love this city having long history & great culture.
I also particularly love the staff in this museum. They make you feel very welcome with such pleasant attitude & smile. The salmon roll at the cafe is also very delicious & popular.
E.

J.
Very interesting place clean, staff don’t know all their stuff.
a.
Great way to spend a few hours learning about the history of Dunedin and the plans for the future..
M.
Great free museum with plenty of good exhibits.
L.
A great variety of exhibitions and the digital media helps keeps everything feeling alive. Nice to see things from the past like a student bedroom and a Dental Clinic sign.
M.
Well designed museum with a fantasic collection. The museum has a great gift shop. There is a beautiful cafe, but we didn't try it. This is an extensive collection of the history of the people that settled in the Otago peninsulas. It includes housing, clothing, tools, transportation, technology and much more from the beginning of settlement to recent history. The museum layout and overall design made the visit excellent. We spent about 1.5 hours at the museum.
L.
Loved this museum - such interesting exhibits and so well presented, we spent nearly four hours here! Well worth a visit, and it's free/donation only.
We were actually able to park for free outside when we visited in June 2020 (there is some other free short stay parking nearby, though we stayed longer than the two hour limit)
W.
Absolutely fantastic you couldn't go through in one visit
c.
A great place to visit, not some stuffy old museum. Lots of interesting and innovative displays making history and other stuff genuinely interesting.
J.
This is the most amazing place to learn about Dunedin. And the cafe not bad eather.
J.
This was so good lots of things from my childhood & beyond. We nearly missed the train we were so engrossed. Want to go again
R.
We love visiting this place. Something new to see everytime we come. We especially love the arts and crafts table and animal blocks in the bus terminal of the museum. Great resource for a stay at home mum and loved by all ages.
S.
A favourite place. Always new things to discover and well loved exhibits to re-visit. Great for all ages. Vaccine pass required.
M.
Very interesting museum with some cool artefacts
R.
A must see museum to learn of local history. Beautifully done exhibits . Handicapped accessible. Free admission though donations are appreciated. Maps available at desk. Small gift shop and cafe with seating. Just down the road from railroad station. Plan in 30-45 minutes to walk through exhibits and read content. The portrait gallery if the original settlers and families is amazing.
c.
Ok alot of things were closed but still very interesting
L.
An excellent display of the area's history. You could easily spend 2 to 3 hours in this very uniquely displayed museum. It has something for everyone and the staff is very helpful and friendly. Admission is by donation. It truely is and if you do not put this on your itinerary you will have missed seeing, hearing and feeling the history of this charming city.
R.
Excellent museum with a fantastic collection. This is a must for visitors to Dunedin, especially if you're into the history of the area, or have ancestry in this region. There is something to interest absolutely everyone here. My family, including two older teens enjoyed this experience. Allow a good few hours or more to look through the entire collection.
N.
Cafe is pleasantly nice. Hot Coffee, cake and hot cheese rolls. Toasties..jungle boxes for the kids, cold drinks too.
Friendly staff..
Cafe staff are Kayla, Nic, and Alana.
Come say to us.
We are run by the Otago museum cafe....same food as there and same faces.
See you soon. For a coffee and a chat.
Q.
Went with my son in a school group of children, the children love going and seeing all the different things. The staff are so good and very patient with some of the children. it was also lovely to sit and have a coffee after some time walking around in there, while the staff talked to the children. A very enjoyable day thank you. Was totally fascinated by the history of Dunedin and the range of objects in exhibitions. Explanations were extensive. Loved every minute of visit.
d.
Grandkids loved the animal hunt & penny farthing bikes. Well set up with xisays of every kind. Found my grandfather who was an engine driver in Lumsden on the computerized stations. Could spend a lot longer there.
o.
I have loved The Settlers series for ages. It is a novel approach to interactive experiences. This museum was a brave new advancement int the series despite it's ambiguity.
D.
Friendly helpful staff. Amazing exhibits. Nice cafe. Genealogy room has great information and very helpful staff. A great asset to our city.
S.
Awesome museum. Strangely liked it better than our Te Papa! Must see whoever is visiting Dunedin, a great walk down the memory lane.
B.
We had a great time at this little museum. It is totally free, and is small enough that you can see all of it in an hour (at a very fast pace), or take your time and make a morning of it. We spent about two hours there and enjoyed every minute. The recent-modern section was really neat, with all the home convenience appliances and advertisements.
J.
We had a great visit through this wonderful and informative museum. There is no admission charge, however their is a donation suggestion which is very reasonable and well worth it. We will visit again when next in Dunedin.
S.
Very interesting museum, good souvenirs and presents shop and tasty coffee.
P.
This is a very well designed museum with a lot of interactive displays, it is in a beautiful art deco building, you could easily spend a whole day here. I have always loved Josephine the steam engine and theres some great technology from the past which I remember using in my youth :) The cafe is great, and there is also an excellent shop.
B.
Excellent for searching records of early settlers. Has history from very first inhabitants. Superb gallery displaying portraits of early settlers.
T.
Very good - good for kids on rainy day!
M.
Very interesting to have an overview of the living in Dunedin from it's beginning.
B.
Very informative and allow a bit of time as it takes a while to get around
L.
Excellent museum.Amazed at the amount of displays and information.Easy to navigate and was full of information.
D.
Magnificent! A must visit venue but don't hurry through- take time and enjoy the displays and interesting presentation methods used to introduce the areas history.
S.
Great free to view museum in Dunedin, lots to see. A chai latte from the cafe was very good. The gift shop had some higher quality gifts than you would find at regular souvenir shops. I enjoyed the old appliances and electronic equipment displays. Very well done!
H.
Really enjoyed this visit! Well laid out with something for everyone.
M.
Fascinating and well-structured insight into Dunedin/Otago/NZ & world history. Free entry (but well deserving of donations)
D.
Knowledgeable and helpful staff. Interesting exhibits and an insite to the innovative and strong Scottish Immigrants. Most enjoyable
L.
Fabulous museum with a complete collection that displays the very first settlement up through the ages. We had to go out to add money to the meter for parking to give us more time. It’s a bonus that it’s free (donations requested and eagerly granted by us). Do not miss this gem.
J.
This place is really good. Very informative though there were a few things left out probably due to controversy. Highly recommend, also way higher than it seems
A.
Had an OK visit to Toitu. The great big piece of greenstone was just lovely. Very smooth as well. I was with 2 others who went into the sea exhibit, by the old cart & horses. I didn't as I felt sea-sick last time I went in there. Apparently there was nothing there! They were disappointed. The cars was the highlight for me, we sat on the old Tiger Tea Bus & joined inwith another group sort-of playing with it going, "My stop here, see you!". It was quite fun.
We did a review postcard and hung that on the sculpture too.
In the special exhibit, I saw an old sewing machine, similar to my own.
Very cool to see that!
V.
Very well done. Free entry. Donations accepted. Minimum time one hour up to 2 hours. Do not miss Josephine 🚂
L.
What a great place to spend a rainy afternoon. Lots to see including a great display of advances in technology in the household and computers. Loved the art deco bus station.
T.
Fabulous Fun. There are many old favourites from my childhood plus new exhibits every month plus an activity sheet for the children to find things plus a play area with toys and colouring in activities. Children get exercise. Too much to see in one visit.
P.
Very good displays, didn't have enough time to look at everything properly. Need to visit again one day
J.
This museum was surprisingly delightful! I was not expecting to walk away impressed from a free museum in Dunedin, but was I wrong! I spent an hour here, but should have spent two as I felt quite rushed. One of the best things about this museum is that it has something for everyone; family trees, cultural insights into early Dunedin, old cars, old computers and technology (some was interactive), woman's suffrage, information on local Maori, and more.
S.
Very fun museum, better than you'd expect from a free local history place. It has a good mix of exhibits and doesn't feel overwhelmingly large, but the layout is a bit awkward and the use of space isn't the best; you'll be bumping into people and crowding around the same spaces even if there's only 5 people in the room.
Best to avoid busy times if possible.

If your in Dunedin I definitely recomend at look around our local early settlers museum. There are displays a plenty to cover all ages and interests. The kids will love the dress up clothes and climbing on the tram and checking out the older cars, buses and train engines. The older amongst us certainly have a trip back down memory lane. Often there are one off set displays on for a few months at a time. If your into genealogy then you may just see a named photo of one of your ancestors up on the wall. There is also a souvenir shop and a cafe to rest and recover after all that walking around.
J.
An excellent, well-run, free museum with friendly and helpful staff (my wife left her camera in the archives and they corralled her at reception to return it). We especially liked the recreation of the settlers’ sea voyage, the interactive multimedia displays, and to the relief of my flat feet, ample seating. We had nostalgic delight in the modern era section, which displayed home appliances we grew up with, although it was a bit disconcerting to see computer tablets as museum pieces
J.
Great place to visit and catch up on the local history. So many great NZ companies founded in the area that no longer exist, very sad. But at least their heritage is being preserved for others to learn about.
T.
Good place to have cuppa. Food are amazing !!
J.
Great tourist destination. Lots of history, kid friendly.
K.
It's.great and they.have good shows on here every so.often that I am tempted to go to! they have some good older displays on and add more
K.
Really liked the 'inside a travellers boat'. Thought it was a real good touch. Great place! Was nice and quiet when we went. My boyfriend and myself particularly loved the music Corner with the Dunedin musicians. Thanks a million!
G.
Beautiful museum. Definitely worth while visiting. Interesting artefacts from the time of the first settlers to today, very thoughtfully displayed. We spent way more time there than we had planned and ended our visit in the cafe where we had a good flat white and a cookie.
R.
This museum is tremendous and one of the best in New Zealand. Covers basically the entirety of Dunedins history. Takes several hours to properly see the whole thing. Has a lot of individualized and somewhat eclectic exhibits. Great for both kids and adults. We loved it.
C.
If you love history like I do, I highly recommend this place
L.
A "must see" in Dunedin. Well set out Museum, great displays, beautiful building, includes a Cafe.Good parking.
J.
It was very good and it's free
f.
Great place to take the kids ...
J.
Great place and so well presented. I was so surprised at the range of the items you could see. I especially liked the older vehicles and the old appliances. The old bus too was a dead finger for one I used to go to school in back in Oz. The pictures of the old settlers was interesting, especially the series of them against old buildings.
L.
Super enlightening museum with an extensive collection of artifacts that go back to the gold rush days.
Lovely museum shop and facilities are not amiss. I particularly liked the exhibition that gave an experience of how it would've been had I traveled to New Zealand by ship.
Highly recommend visiting.
E.
One of the best museums I have been to about one of my favourite cities. Free all year round and great to bring kids. Tonnes to see and a lot of great Dunedin history that is important to the whole of new Zealand. Will definitely come back.
D.
Visited here as part of my trip round Dunedin and it was quite surprising. The museum itself has loads of info and displays with friendly staff. Most importantly the cafe is well worth the price you pay for the cakes.
T.
Excellent presentation with interactive state of the art displays.
E.
Fantastic Museum, highly reccomend as part of any trip to Dunedin. Loads to do for the whole family. The exhibits are fun and interactive and the best part is it is free entry. If you have young kids check out the arrivals and departures hall which is full of games and activities to keep the kids occupied.
M.
Great place to visit and learn New Zealand history
C.
Fantastic to visit, free could have spent half a day in there.
M.
A great museum to learn about the history of the Otago region and the way it was settled. Can't beat the free price. Allow at least 2 hours to see the bare minimum of this museum. If you spend more and look at things in detail you won't be bored if you like to learn. I highly recommend this stop, especially as a tourist.
P.
This is an absorbing museum located in a linked row of individual heritage and modern buildings that are worth a look themselves . But it's what's inside that is the real attraction: the story of the Otago region told through displays of more than 100,000 exhibits, many of them with a relatable domestic angle, from food to clothes to houses to cars. Wandering through the 14 galleries, you begin with early Māori inhabitants and progress up to recent times, inevitably recognising at some point that your own personal history overlaps with what you're seeing, whether it's a school uniform, twin tub washing machine or clunky-looking computer or bikes, vehicles. Worth seeing.
J.
Best museum I have been in for quite some time. Stories brilliantly told. Loved it.
M.
Can't get enough of this museum. Great for young and old. Lots of things that little ones can touch and climb. If you are from out of town make sure you set asside a good portion of time.
A.
Toitu or the settlers museum as it was once called is now, a slick presentation of the history of Dunedin. The new museum lacks the sole and charm of the original but is still very worthwhile way to spend a rainy afternoon. The cafe is in the main entrance and a little open for my taste but good coffee and food, not the reason to visit.
P.
Great place to learn about Dunedin History.
R.
Visited here twice recently, once solo and once in a group. Was VERY impressed with the exhibits, but even more so with the places accessable nature. Cane users should have a great time. Guide Dogs welcome, and although the place is large, the nearby gardens outside can facilitate longer visits.
n.
What a great place, well thought out, attractive, interactive. Very enjoyable time here.
C.
Was absolutely fantastic at the woven woman's exhibition.
L.
This is a must see museum and my wife and I really enjoyed it. Inside is like a Tardis and it is amazing how much has been put into a small area. The Settlers Gallery is fascinating and I picked up a lead for my own ancestry trail.Recommended.
D.
Nostalgic place to visit for a baby boomer! So many items to see from travel through the ages, to the story of the computer age. Something of interest for all ages. Great café too plus very safe space for the little ones to play while having your coffee. Highly recommend a visit. And..best of all..It's FREE
L.
So much to see. But would have liked more information about pre-colonial history and the Chinese settlers.
It was easy to see how wealthy the Otago area became as a result of the natural resources mined and milled.
C.
Unbelievable this place was great and free
R.

This is an amazing place! So well designed and heaps of interesting things for the kids. You can easily spend 2 hours here. Great cafe - and don't miss the Chinese garden next door!
J.
Well laid out and a good range of information pertaining to Otago. Able to use wheel chair thought-out museum
R.
Great museum where you can check out the artifacts from colonial times in Dunedin's rich and storied history.
My favourite game to play each and every single time I'm there is to find the photo of somebody in the 'portrait room' that is smiling.
Also can recommend going into the transportation through time section. Can never get enough of the tiger tea bus.
J.
Really nice place to spend a cold winter afternoon. Since reopening there is a much nicer feel and the exhibitions appear much better presented. Liked the cats & dogs section. Great way to research potential settler connections in the family too.
L.
An excellent and free museum in Dunedin. A really informative and interactive museum with a variety of displays. We spent nearly two hours here and really enjoyed it. The staff were lovely as well.
M.
Absolutely brilliant museum. Free to enter. Nice cafe. Extensive exhibits covering many areas of interest. You need half a day to do it justice.
S.
Toitu Early Settlers Museum is an interesting and modern place to familiarise yourself with Dunedin's history.
Apart from interesting interactive and static displays there is also a research area as well.
There is a modern cafe and rest room facilities as you walk in to the museum.
Well worth a visit!
R.
This is one of the most interesting and interactive museums I have experienced. Not just a 'something to do on a rainy day' place. Definitely well worth the time.
And great coffee in the foyer cafe.
D.
Greta place to learn about Dunedin's history. has a lot of interactive exhibits and a nice wee cafe!
T.
Fantastic. Many exhibits are interactive with sets that you can actually climb on and touch. There was also an incredibly diverse range of exhibits. Very impressive
R.
Great free thing to do in Dunedin. Plenty of interesting exhibits to look at from cars to trams to TVs and more! There is also a cafe here but didn’t go there this time.
R.
This is a really nice museum all about the history of Otago. They have amazing exhibits, including a room full of portraits of many of the original settlers and a room that was designed to be like the cheap cabins in the ships that sailed to New Zealand. It is a really nice place to bring kids too.
J.
The old Tiger Tea Bus is a personal fave!! Then all the first modern appliances like microwaves and cellphones, the settlers gallery is amazing, used to be called "The early settlers museum", I went there as a child. Love it
M.
The Toitu Otago Settlers Museum is the most interesting museum I've visited. They show the history of the settlers with the help of the modern technology on a interesting way. You can spend hours, listening and reading about the history of the shown pieces.
It's free but it would be nice to leave a donation there.
A.
Fantastic to visit. So well presented and interesting. It was fantastic to see it all. Well worth a visit for anybody of any age
M.
We enjoyed the interactive exhibitions throughout the museum. The museum is very modern and captures the local spirit in a very good way. I have a better understanding of Dunedin after visiting.
B.
Really interesting history well worth visiting & it's free
P.
Incredible museum with lots of interactive sections! Love the variety and quality of exhibits, we only had 30mins which was just enough to get through, could happily spend a couple of hours here.
B.
Went along with some friends after the relaunch. The place was well laid out. There is a lot of space so they could over time add more to the collection.
You have to check out the portrait room if you like old mixed with new. They have great large touch screen computers allowing you to zoom in on the pictures and get full detail of all of them.
K.
I enjoyed myself here. I came for a very important talk. A very popular man was down here in town to give us all a talk regarding the Covid-19 effects on mankind etc... It was free and chocka in the room they held it in!
K.
Good family friendly for all ages and can learn alot of history and culture
L.
Very pleasant way to spend an afternoon
J.
What an astonishing place! There is SO much to see and it's all really interesting. Not so much that it bores, and just enough for the Wow factor. It should be the main museum. It eclipses the Otago Museum by a mile! This really is a must see. Give yourself at least two hours.
M.
Amazing!! Has expanded alot since last time I was there, a good mix of traditional museum and interactive stuff for kids. 7 year old loved it
D.
My first visit since the renovations were done a few years ago. Congrats to all involved, it's a real credit to the Otago region. Great way to learn about the early settlement of the region and the changing face of Otago over the years. A real trip down memory lane when getting into the area with all the old home appliances and the technology. Loved it!
S.
Lots of interesting displays - some relatively modern historical items included: punch cards, paper tape used in my computer studies at school, and floppy discs (still got heaps of these for a home computer)!! Free entry.
C.
This is a great museum that hides it's opulence with a small-looking outside structure, but don't let this fool you. The museum starts off with a showcase of the history and establishment of Dunedin, and some models of the tools used by the Maori settlers. You then come through a remake of a ship used by the English settlers and lastly brings you through a showcase of old electronics and automobiles, with a remake as well of the tram installed in Dunedin in the past. Definitely worth going to for anyone of any age.
M.
Excellent museum, very informative. Will be back.
E.
It's a beautiful museum, interesting. The children find it a bit dark and difficult to see often. Having lots of step stools would make it more family friendly.
N.
It was amazing and fun and my cousins really enjoyed it
N.
Lots of things were displayed neatly from very old to our childhood age. We could have spent time there at least a half day!
B.
Great museum! Showcases the history of Dunedin from the time the Settlers arrived, with the tools they used, horse carts and much more. As you go through the rooms, it shows you the history of Dunedin in chronological order, up to old computers, floppy disks, etc. They even have an old Atari console. Definitely worth coming to!
The only bad thing is that the Chinese Gardens at the end (optional) require a payment.
M.
So fun! About European, pacific n Chinese settlers ! Made a game about guessing years on the displays. N the transport section is my fav!
M.
Fantastic museum, plenty to interest everyone. not just display cases but audio visual and sensory. Strange to see phones and computers used in my teenage years being in a museum now.
J.
Really interesting place to visit... even the 13 year old loved it
D.
Absolutely brilliantly presented. A must definitely. So much history.
T.
I thought it was absolutely outstanding and fantastic. You can spend a lot of time here, and well put together with historical exhibits. A credit to the city of Dunedin, A must see!

A.
A amazing museum. Very well thought out with quality exibits. Very interactive with different aspects of the regions history around very corner.
A must visit again and spend more time.
M.
A very inclusive Museum. It includes the recent migrants and make sure that their stories are documented through video recordings that are played on the loop. My husband has been here researching his ancestry. There are records of the ship that arrived and it's passengers. Dunedinites love and are proud of this museum.
C.
Heaps of fun, lovely friendly helpful staff. Also nice place to go and get of the rain. Also cafe if u feeling hungry or need a coffee

Great place, well presented and friendly / helpful staff. Could do with more information on the exhibits... But it's free so is exceedingly good value. Nice coffee shop at the entrance too.
P.
Very interesting and the old fella outside looking after the train was very interesting.
J.
Really nice museum that gives a great introduction into the history of dunedin. From pre-european through to today and beyond. Really enjoyed the historic vehicle section with old trains, cars, bus and bikes...despite it making me feel old...it also has a great activity room for kids. definately worth a walk through. Right next to the beautiful Dunedin Railway station. We hit both places at the same time. Nice farmers market at the railway stn on saturday mornings also worth a visit.
M.
Great museum, helpful staff, nice cafe, shop with good gift ideas. This mu

T.
Very interesting. I enjoyed it very much. Would start with this museum to get into Dunedin history and visit Otago museum afterwards for some more details and the bigger picture.
I.
Interesting museum worth a visit. Only 2 things that I felt missing more Maori history and more history on what made the European settlers leave Europe.
P.
Stream trains, cars and motor bikes...and other stuff
Free to enter also. They have museum set-out as a time line of Dunedin from the early settlers right through to ideas for the future of the foreshore. Wonder if some of these ideas will be realised. Enjoyed the walk through. All on one level so easy for those less abled. Kids getting bored, no problem there is a play area in the middle. And for the adults a cafe at the start.
R.
Interesting story of otago settlement
S.
The best place to learn about the history of NZ and Otago. The war memorial is my favourite.
A.
Stunning. Set out beautifully woth wonderful attention to detail. Excellent level of visitor interaction. One of the best museums I've visited.
S.
Wide open spaces. Our grandchild loves the play area and drawing area. We love showing him the old things we used in the past
C.
Big and interactive adventure through this museum. There was a 19th century outfit you could wear in the clothing section of the museum. Several interactive movies, very worth it!
L.
Free activity with lots of things to look at.
G.
Found some of my heritage here. It was nicely laid out and very interesting to learn about the frontier. Staff are passionate and friendly. Would definitely recommend for international and local travellers alike.
E.
We were taken here by some Dundon friends and were so impressed by the quality of the exhibits and the lighting. The coffee shop was also lovely. We would have loved to have spent more time here.
C.
Free, so wasn't expecting much but it was fascinating and varied wit a mix of Maputo history, European settlement, then transport, technology and costumes. Something for everyone. Highly recommended!

P.
If you're visiting Dunedin (or a local), check this out for sure! It's free, and there is a ton of good stuff to see. They said it takes 45 minutes, but we spent a few hours (which you can do over multiple vosits, because it's FREE!)

Beautiful museum that tells you a lot about Dunedin's history. Has a lot of artifacts on display, with video narratives, a reconstruction of a settler ship's lower deck. Great modern interior design.

T.
Diffenatley wished i spent more time here. Some great peices of NZ history here.
오.
They have portrait room called i think scott gallery. I felt thrilled to be sorrounded by all the settlers of NZ, and the other one amuzed me was the fabrication or the well-depicted ark that they the early settler have board on. You could get in and experience the reality and vivid impressions of the era.
