Reviews of Seal Colony Tauranga Bay
s.
A place where you can see a lot of Seals. Nice beach. But who every visit there may think the Seal Colony is the beach infront of the car park. This is due to the fact the Map and Arrow boards are at the end of te car park. It s a good idea to display the map at the entrance so people wont miss the 500 m walk to the Seal Colony
D.
TV didn't work in motel, so went for a drive and walked to the seal colony!! So much more enjoyable, even in the rain! Try spot the seal in pic
N.
The area here is just stunning and the wildlife is incredible. I could spend hours here watching these animals.
A.
Lovely stop over for some overloading of cuteness!
It was an overcast morning but we were lucky to avoid any showers.
The seals and pups were lounging about. A few playful moments and lots of lazy blubbing about.
The walkways are well kept and the information around is insightful. Great work from DOC.
M.
Beautiful beach, great walking track, decent toilets and plenty of parking. The seals are captivating.... Could have stood on the viewing platform and watched them play and swim for hours.
W.
Short walk nice track to see the seal. Could be the only seal colony in west coast.
S.
It was amazing such a short walk from the carpark took us to a wild animal’s natural habitat. Went here on a rainy day but still got a stunning view of the ocean.
L.
Great experience! Even if it was so windy and rainy we still loved it. Well-formed track with amazing views. The best part was of course to see the seals in their natural habitat.
J.
It has some amazing views with a not to challenging walk, the track is well maintained and is gravel so can be a little slippery coming down so be careful. Although it can be very had to actually make out the seals on the rocks because you are so far away, which for some might defeat the point of the walk. However even though it is hard to see the seals the view is well worth the walk.
Also if you a lucky if you go to the café which isn't to far from the seals rocks, there is a chance of seeing some little blue penguins.
J.
We had small kids so took the advice of the lady at the info centre and drove round to Tauranga Bay instead of walking from the lighthouse. 15mins or less from the car park. Lovely walk on a sunny day. The children got up close to a weka on the track and loved watching the seals from the viewing platform!
W.
What better place to start your journey! The Great Coast Road between Westport and Greymouth has been named one of the Top 10 Coastal Drives in the world according to Lonely Planet.
The windswept rugged coastline of the West Coast has more protected land than any other part of New Zealand.
J.
What an amazing walk! Highly recommended as a family activity, even for little ones. Stunning scenery! But it is called Cape Foulwind for a reason so not a wet weather activity.
i.
Beautiful walk. Dramatic landscape/cliff.
The seal pups are so adorable.
K.
Easy walk. 5mins from carpark to wall island viewpoint/look out. Another 5mins to seal viewpoint. Not the best seal colony in South Island but still fine.
J.
This has been a highlight of our Westcoast tour. Awesome to see lots of seals and so many babies playing in the rock pools.
J.
MUST SEE! Guys, if you are interested to see numerous sea seals in their own playground. This is it! Relatively short walk from the car pack. We arrived around 4 pm, so many sea seals. Some were swimming and some were sleeping. Loved it!
S.
A must do on the West Coast, it is stunning! The walk to the Seal Colony from the Tauranga Bay carpark is easy and also Stroller and wheel chair friendly.
There are public toilets at the carpark, just watch out for the mosquitos! We wore insect repellent just in case as there could be sandflies as well.
The Seal colony is a place where you can spend time just watching the seals go about their daily business, it's very entertaining!
At times there is an ice-cream and coffee vendor in the carpark.
Definitely visit this attraction, it's nature at its best 😊
Z.
This has been a highlight of my west coast trip. We won't get to Kaikora so I was desperate to see the seals at Tauranga Bay and it did not disappoint. We probably saw about 30 seals all up (including babies) and we visited in March which is coming to the end of the breeding season. We watched them for about 40minutes, they can be hard to spot at first but once you start seeing them you'll see them lolling all around the place. It's an easy well directed walk with some stop off points. Take binoculars if your keen on the wildlife, but you can still see them without.
R.
One of the most beautiful sunset spots I’ve been in, the seals are for sure easy to watch and they look awesome, the bird wall island in front is cool to watch too with the telescope!
M.
Lots of seals, pups crying for the mum(I think), some diving in the waves. The walk to the light house is very nice, about 1hr to get there, magnificent views
R.
We came in mid October and we saw... baby seals! They're super cute and very active and loud. Worth a detour on the way to Westport
N.
Definitely worth the detour to come and see the seals in their natural habitat. You could waste a lot of time sitting and watching them and taking in the incredible view.
Y.
Wonderful views. Seals should be spotted all year round, but there will be different types (mating, pups, etc) during different periods.
Short walk (approx. 15 to 20 mins) to the viewpoint.
S.
Really cute seals! Can be a little tricky to spot at first, but when you see them there are plenty! When I visited in start January, there were newly born seals playing around, and looking almost like cute tiny puppies
A.
Nice walk with watching seals play in the water. Also the rock and waves crushing is beautiful to see. Worth the visit
S.
The day we visited the Seal Colony it was pouring with rain. However I believe this increase the experience. Sensational views and the hearing the absolute power of the ocean crashing into the rocks below was awesome.
J.
Well prepared tracks, easy accessible even for children. Watching the sea lions is really astonishing. And the thundering waves are mesmerizing.
J.
If you're on the west coast you just have to see these beauties in their natural habitat. Well worth it and the walk is very short, 15mins at a snail's pace.
S.
At the Seal Colony there is a nearby carpark and then a walkway to viewing platforms for the seals. If you have the time and the inclination for exercise you could make the day of it and park at Cape Foulwind Lighthouse and walk along the coast to the Seal Colony. Being lazy we visited both and drove between the two.
There is a good view of the seals in the pool below, while we were there the only downside was some obnoxious kid who kept jumping on the platform and this vibrated the camera. Can’t parents keep their offspring under control.
Several hundred photos later, distilled down to 3-4 we left.
We also saw our first Weka here.
P.
Nice walkway with good views. You will get some sights of the seals and it's ok if you have never seen seals in their wild habitat before. But there are better places for sealviewing in NZ
T.
Perfectly placed just a 10-15 minute walk from the car park (that has well attended toilets) this a a beautiful boarded walk where you can enjoy the wildly. We have visited twice now and there has been lots of activity on both occasions. There is a longer walk for those either without kids or in need of a longer stretch for the legs!
R.
Awesome stop off. Well worth the short detour from the main road and short walk to the viewing platform. We enjoyed watching several young seals frolicking in the rock pools.
R.
What's not to love about seals? We went in December and there were a handful of pups running around. Definitely consider walking along the track a ways, it's quite beautiful.
D.
Bring binoculars! This place is beautiful with long distance views of the seals. Binoculars made a huge improvement in our experience
R.
Nice walk along coast to overlook seals
A.
Great, peaceful, unbelievable place!!!! First time i saw a wild seal... Remember to respect the animals!! Enjoy a place
R.
Awesome well worth a visit, my daughter loved looking at the baby seals from the viewing platform
J.
Watching the ocean swell was a swell time. Seals were playing with each other. I was hoping to see some penguins 🐧. I'm so glad we stopped here.
C.
Lovely area. I went in June and didn't see any seals, but still a great walk over hills.
R.
Easy walk and a great view of the seals. Might be a bit nasty if the weather is blowing in hard from the northwest.
S.
This was a great little detour. There were baby seals there ! You need to take the little path near the sign and its about a 10 minute walk to the seals. They are not just on the beach.
R.
Loads of lovely seals! Great time of year for playful pups. Use the binoculars at the top lookout to spot larger seals on the offshore rocks. Good pathway for all levels of fitness.
A.
It's great to visit the seal colony on a sunny day. The scenery is breathtaking and the seals are cute.
R.
A bit far away for my taste.
We walked from Foulwind Car Park, quiet a work
L.
A wonderful day great walks n perfect scenery
G.
I love the view, walking the track to the Seal Colony is very relaxing.
T.
Good easy walk and very nice parking, toilet at both ends.
M.
Nice views from up there only a few seals there when we went
W.
Great views of the Fur seals and their pups among the rocks and pools. There was a nice walk up to the viewing area which was a good distance away so it didn't disturb the colony.
C.
At least you are going to be able see actual seals, or maybe it was just good luck. Anyways, if your passing by te stop is worth it.
S.
Beautiful beach and an easy walk to a platform with a good view of the colony
A.
Very cool place to visit. Lots of seals just lazing the day away
H.
Great work DOC: very well worth the effort. Lots of seals on view from easily accessed viewing platform and plenty of useful information available.
N.
Dog friendly, wee shop with ice creams, drink etc, toilets and short walk to see the seals. Awesome wee spot
L.
Great little walk lots of seal pups playing
C.
Easy walk with a nice view and lots of baby seals. What’s more to ask?
J.
Tauranga Bay was awesome, the most beautiful day.a must visit place.
J.
Cool place to view some wildlife and go for a stroll
A.
So nice to see them from above, and from the platform so people can't get close and bother them! Would definitely recommend the short walk to visit.
L.
Put this on your MUST SEE LIST if you are in this area. ASTONISHING to see Seals cavorting in their natural habitat, and so MANY!! Amazing to observe them so close and yet out of human interference. The walk to and from the area and the Lighthouse add to this venue's attraction.
G.
Nice easy walk, tracks in good condition.Well built lookout.
B.
Lovely walk with a view of the seal colony and good views
C.
Great walk so well maintained to this very interesting place. Good view of seals - lovely to see pops playing in the water. Thanks DOC another incredible facility.
M.
Very cute seals. There were baby ones at this time of the year. Very cute worth the walk. It was overcast day, but still plenty of seals.
P.
Tauranga bay is a perfectly horseshoe shaped Bay with awesome surf waves and sand beach. A short track at the north end of the beach takes you to a viewing platform that overlooks a seal coloney. 🦭 Highly recommended
R.
Stopped here on the drive down the coast. Amazing views and lots of cute seals! Definitely worth a visit.
S.
The Department of Conservation have built and maintained an excellent carpark, toilet facilities, walkway and viewing platform overlooking the seal colony. Well sign-posted and notices about the colony and wildlife en route. Only takes 15 minutes walk from the carpark... Lots of seals and native birds to enjoy.
J.
A bit off the main road but worth it, good viewing olatform
P.
The walk from the car park to the viewing points is excellent. It curves along the mountainside and offers stunning views down the coast over the beach. The view points have plenty of space and a free telescope is there if you need it. The main viewing platform has plenty of space. The day we went started off with scattered showers but was sunny by the time was were on the platform. There were dozens of seals and plenty of action. Seals were playing, fighting, diving into the sea, climbing out of the sea, climbing the rocks and some were just lazing about. It was an excellent experience. There are restrooms and very good information panels at the car park too.
S.
A great walk and a few seals to see from the viewing platform
A.
An easy stroll along a short even trail to view seals in their natural habitat
K.
Such a lovely place to come and visit
y.
Nice walk along the track to view the seals. Saw several pups playing in the waves. The mums were relaxing.
S.
The walk is easy to the viewing platform where the seals can be seen below. It's something I could watch for hours. We visited in January when the big fat seals were sunbathing on the rocks and the baby seals were pushing each other into the water in the little kids pool that was in the middle of the rocks. There was a lot of movement and plentt of swimming and chasing. An amazing place to visit.
T.
Well worth the 15 minutes short walk
L.
Excellent spot to view baby fur seals in the wild. Over twenty when we visited around mid-September 2018.
R.
Good short walk to view the colony . Plenty of moms and pups today
H.
Beautiful spot. I ran from the lighthouse to the colony and back. epic piece of coastline, pure magic.
m.
Awesome place to watch seals. We have aeen heaps of them (all ages). It was fun ti watch them crawling around the rocks, the debris and going in the water and getting on land. Worthwhile the trip.
R.
This was a great experience. We actually saw a colony, not just one or two - pups and adults, resting or playing. Spectacular coast - wild waves even on a good day and huge beaches.
A.
Was awesome seeing mums and pups on ther rocks.
B.
Loved the walk saw a lot of seals
P.
This is a fantastic spot. A short walk to lookout to see the seals below on the rocks. What a wild place the coast is. DOC has done a great job here for the visitors.
C.
It was pup season....love watching the seals play
N.
Short stroll to seal lookout
d.
Amazing spot! So cool to see the baby seals
L.
Lovely short walk. You can see plenty of seals from the lookout - not a great photo opp without a telephoto lens but bring binoculars if you can!
B.
I was not expecting that, we are quite fare from the seals. Go to Kaikoura they'll be 10m from you!
M.
Good walk from Tauranga beach to the Cape Foulwind lighthouse with views to the seal colony on the way.
D.
Great place to see the seals in the wild 👍😊
D.
Doesn't disappoint! There were seals and views!
W.
Seal Colony in Tauranga is just 15 minutes walk from the carpark.
a.
Heaps of seal pups around at this time of the year.
l.
The most beautiful spot, just the right size walk for kids to do and seniors, great fun trying to spot the seals from the big platform above the colony. And usually there's an coffe/icecream tent to enjoy a treat and the view
M.
Worth visiting. Beautiful.
R.
Beautiful walk from the lighthouse, didnt take as long as posted! Well worth it, breathtaking views. If you take young children, put them on a lead, some steep drop-offs along the meandering cliff walk. Adorable seals camouflaged on the rocks, easily seen from the viewing platform. Take binoculars for close-up views, can be breezy, so tie your hat on!! Umbrellas not recomended
F.
Was walked from the lighthouse which is a good walk and was very warm.
However the path is well maintained, and once there I really appreciated
- the information provided through signs. It explains a lot about the seals and has information for every season so you know what is happening when you are there.
- the platform, which allows to see the seals, without risking tourists getting too close to them and disturbing them too much
A.
Really enjoyed sighting the seals in their natural habitat. The children really liked when the seals started making noises. Amazing place
E.
Great walk and scenery, windy due to the nature of the coast but very much enjoyed
盛.
When I got there it was pretty windy, which send the seal smell back to the viewing platform 😹. Didn't actually see a lot of seals, not sure if it's the wrong time of the day, or season, or just bad luck. As the platform is still quite some distance away from the shore, seals there didn't take any notice of us visitors. They just hop around and mind their own business. It's worth the drive if you are keen to see some real seals, otherwise skip it to pancake rocks which to me is far better view. The other thing is that the carpark is pretty big, for a single attraction spot. Guess there are more people into seals than I thought.
L.
Fabulous viewing of seals and gorgeous scenery
M.
Great opportunity to see seals while making short turn off.
K.
Great views at the seals. Save distance.
D.
Nice easy 15 minute walk from the car park to the seal colony viewing platform. I saw 4 or 5 baby fur seals playing among the rocks while the 2 or 3 adults lay nearby keeping an eye on them. The rest must have still been a sea hunting.
A.
Great location with sea views and of course seals if you can spot them. Very popular tourist location. The paths are clear and well made, leading to several viewing platforms. You can walk from here to the lighthouse, although the track is slightly less comfortable. Good parking an an expensive coffee cart. Not much shade.
B.
Lovely walk and got to see the seals too.
R.
We went there on a windy and wet day in early October and saw about two dozen seals including some pups. It's a great scenery with massive waves breaking in the background. There are some seagulls around too and a scenic 45min walkway. Nice stop at the West Coast.
P.
A short walk takes you to a small seal colony that you can see from a path on top. They are pretty far away but you are very likely to see a few, at least. We saw around five. You can leave the car at the car park in front of the beach and then walk 3 minutes to the lookout.
There are toilets and a small truck that sells ice cream, coffee and stuff like that.
C.
We didn't complete the trail but the area is very beautiful. The seals chose the perfect haven to build their colony. We spotted a lot of pups exploring their surrounding or swimming together in the protected pools formed by the rocks. There is also an information board if you want to learn some basics about these beautiful mammals.
M.
Nice walk, plenty of seals.
t.
Only camr to see tge seal colony (with out the walk) it was grate and the baby seal are so quiet
K.
Nice west coast stop. Out of the way from all the tourist buses :-)
N.
We didn't have great weather so this may be better when it's nice. The lookout over the seal colony gives a nice view with many seals lounging about. Lovely walk along the coast even if not specifically looking for seals.
H.
What a magical place to take our 3 year old granddaughter, from Australia, to see.
Seals were jumping in and out of the water pools. We had a first ever ice cream in a cone for 3 year old, then walked along the beach, chasing seagulls and watched the surfers at Tauranga bay.. bliss!!!
I.
You can see them from a distance. 500 meters walk from the car park. Very cute.
J.
Really cool - heaps of seals
E.
Amazing, saw at least 40 seals and lion pups
J.
Beautiful walk and scenery but very difficult to see the seals. They are a long way below the track
G.
Really worth a visit and take the short walk.. The views are specular.. They have put a lot of work into this area and it certainly shows ..
L.
Beautiful family sun bathing on the rocks
c.
A must see while at Westport. Very scenic. We were lucky to see several pups feeding and to see a seal diving into the sea. Wonderful scenery. Theres a large carpark with clean toilets
A.
Nice spot for watching seal colony😊 They're really near. Live Zoo❤
M.
Great walk, beautiful landscape, tons of seals bathing in the sun. It was fun trying to spot them all. A couple of the baby seals were playing. The trail keeps going to the lighthouse as well.
N.
Easy walk from either end although south end is much shorter. Great location to see seals and pups.
M.
Great views and not too far away to see the seals.
J.
The seal colony was fascinating. The pathways are excellent and the notices of explanations excellent. Beautiful views. You won't be disappointed.
R.
Lovely coastal walk and you can look out over the seals but they are quite far away and it isn't an enormous number. We were lucky enough to see babies there.
C.
Wild West Coast at it's best. Plenty of seals on the rocks. Great place to visit, highly recommended.
C.
Oh my word, be still my beating heart 💓❤💙. Love these wee seal faces. They are such characters to watch. 💗💗
M.
Free to visit. Seals easy to see all year round. We visited when the seals were having their pups. Safe easy viewing access. Short walk from car park to seals.
h.
So many seals a nice shorter walk
A.
Nice walk, loads of seals
K.
Had to try the fish and chips.
Kumera chips scrummy!
Great little spot
P.
Good car park area with toilets. This free activity is a short well formed path to a lookout over looking a group of fir seals. At this time of year the little pups can be seen playing in the pool at longing on the rocks. You are not particularly close, so will need a zoom for a good photo, but closer that a lot of viewing sites. Icecream trailer parked at the carpark is a bonus. There are a few picnic benches.
P.
Wow...mother nature at her best
B.
Great walk well worth doing. Walk from one car park to the other and back again amazing views.
S.
You can see the seals from far away but it's worth the walk.
The seals are well Camouflaged but if you look closely you'll notice an entire colony of seals.
Baby seals and all.
K.
Beautiful at sunset. The seals were cute but the scenery was also stunning here.
M.
Nice gentle walk along a very well managed walkway, very easy walk and most of it is buggie/chair friendly. Well worth the free views if nothing else. Credits to Tauranga Council for a great facility.
N.
Best beach best views best running/walking tracks best seal colony eva #westportnz
G.
Beautiful place, great veiws of the coast & seals, great walk to the lighthouse, 2hr return walk along clifftop. Definitely worth doing. Go for sunset & prey there is a sunset! Best time to do it
J.
It's nice to see the seals from the viewpoint, but it would be more fun if you could see them from a little closer by. You need some binoculars if you really want to enjoy them.
K.
Take a short walk and you will see many seals..
B.
Great place to take the kids
A.
To see the seals in their own environment, wow!
T.
Great place to see sea lions!
C.
Stunning views of the Buller Bay and great seal colony viewing platform. Easy track to the seals. Great information at the start. Plenty of parking space and toilets.
E.
Soo cool great lil walk up to viewing deck. Defiantly worth the detour
W.
We saw 3 large fur seals and about 5 pups. But they were quite a long way off and you need a camera with a telescopic lens to get decent photos or video.
J.
The walk and view is amazing and the seals are just beautiful all nestled in the rocks.
K.
Ahhh cute. The baby seals were swimming. The water coming over the large rocks was fantastic. Big seals were sunning. It was a site to see.
B.
A great deal of excellent work has gone into the access ways and viewing platforms
It's a great place to go to enjoy watching the seals, scenery and the views
E.
Do not miss on your west coastline tour
M.
Great walk from the Cape to the seal colony, great for all the family
J.
Beautiful place loveddeeinh the seals basking
R.
Great place to walk and enjoy the views
C.
Very good walkway and viewing points. Bring your telephoto lens or binoculars. There is a nursery pool, with young ones playing in early March.
P.
It was ok, but the seals are very difficult to see
.
T.
Very impressive to see wild seals. The view point is elevated and allows to see seals both on land and in water. Unfortunately we did not see penguins.
D.
Many seals and local birds flocking to the shores of the Tasman sea here! worth visiting if you are at Westport or around the area! the coastal track to cape foulwind from here is also worth running or walking to!
N.
This beach is absolutely stunning. Great walk up the hill to see the seals from a distance, but by far the best thing here is the bay at the start of the walk.
T.
The Seals are quite far away. Can see with the naked eye but if you have take binoculars.
D.
Easy walk to the viewing area, lots off seals and pups
V.
Beautiful on a good day. Lovely scenery. Short walk to Seal colony.
C.
Easy and short walk to get to see several seals, some taking a nap, some playing in water pools, some chasing gulls. Lovely experience!
T.
Windy spectacular views and seals
K.
Good viewing however people that are not used to seeing seals in there natural environment need to slow down & take the time to find the seals.
S.
Easy to get to, well sign posted & then short walk @700-800 mtrs to seal colony. Great views up & down the coast.
A.
Another significant piece of NZ history. Tauranga bay is worth the extra 15 min walk from the seal lookout.
C.
Nice place. Plenty of seals on the rocks with there pups. Hard to get pictures are they are far away. Luckily I had a zoom lens.
N.
Even though it was so wet when we went it was great. Lots of information to read... and the scenery was superb! Amazed with the well kept walkways and areas.... so inviting.
M.
Nice walk and the most playful seal colony I ever seen
R.
Awsome. Well worth a vist and its FREE. Were can you go to see such beauty for nothing
J.
Great place to view seals without disturbing them. Only a short easy walk from the car park.
S.
Very cute seals and nice walk
r.
Nice but i thought maybe we could have got a little closer. Nice walk
G.
What a chance to see seals up close chilled out
J.
This place is a must see!!! We were there Sun 4th Feb 2018. It was raining but the seals were amazing. So many and loads of pups and this place is free.
K.
I was surprised to see baby fur seals in the middle of winter but I hear they're around throughout the year. Absolutely adorable. Bring a zoom lens!
B.
Easy walk and plenty of seals - shame it was blowing a gale and raining
L.
Could have stayed for hours.
Seals are fascinating creatures. In the end, you carry on spotting more and more seals that you initially missed.
s.
Awesome place..a must visit
T.
Excellent track and history. Well signposted and an easy path for families. Must do!!
P.
