Reviews of Petone Settlers Museum

Cool place to learn more about the history and story of Petone. Learned so much from this place and now going for a drive around Petone, we were able to point out different places, which were so rich of history and culture. How blessed we are to have such a museum that's able to showcase this beautiful history.
S.
Awesome History and it was great coming back 20 odd years ago with my family and too share where I was brought up and where there descendants worked.💖❤
C.
What a neat little surprise! We were wondering along the sea front and decided to step inside to see what this museum was about... this became our highlight of a trip to Petone for the day! A wonderfully knowledgeable and friendly host, interesting tidbits of info throughout the exhibition and well put together displays. Highly recommended if you are nearby.
B.
A real hidden gem! We spent so much time here, admiring a different displays...really nicely done, very interesting!

Although, it looks small from the outside, there are lots of nice exhibits inside. The staff was very cheerful and helpful. I specially enjoyed the 25 mins video about the history of New Zealand.
Highly recommended. It will take you less than an a hour. It is worth it.
a.
Though a small museum but gives you a glimpse of settlement and how life was in early days...houses, fmcg products, music, etc...not much for small kids but certainly informative for kids 5+...n then have a walk on lovely petone beach....
G.
An excellent museum with great memories of GMNZ Petone. A highly recommended visit. A coin donation would be a great idea
A.
It is so shameful how, a great local history, is told in such a small museum. I really would love to have some of this history in a building like the Te Papa which, by the way, really needs to be filled up by anything. This museum is easily better than the Te Papa. Highly recommended
S.
This museum is great for learning the history of Petone . Very helpful staff. Well layed out. Enjoyed the old news reel moments of Petone. No toilets but public toilets 200 meters down the foreshore path.
E.
A hidden gem of a museum. Small, but well taken care of and conveys lots of useful information about New Zealand's early settlers. Free entry, donations are welcome.
G.
A great place to visit, lots of free parking by the Petone water front. A nice place to check out our history. Check on the website for opening days as it only opens a few days a week 😁👍

R.
An eye opening little museum. Well set up displays. A very interesting video about the history of early settlement. The lady in reception was friendly and keen to be helpful. Right beside the sea where it all happened.
F.
If you are strolling along the foreshore or just dashing in to get out of the rain this is a Petone gem. A great mix of history in the most amazing art decorating building. Wish I'd taken some photos.
G.
Great museum that is fun and free!
H.
Sad that the Beach is not clean up an Warf is not repaired for the people to enjoy shame

So many interesting stories here about the industries and people that have shaped Petone. Loved the candid photos from the Hills Hat exhibition and the video of the old Unilever factory. Some real delights here to stop in and check out while walking the Esplande.
K.
Wonderful tribute to our soldiers in the entry. Interesting videos about NZ's settler history & also Petone's past as the factory town. Helpful & enthusiastic staff made a great museum better 😊
C.
What a great little museum, and free too! Well worth diverting off a walk along the beach for 30 minutes to stroll around and reflect on how Petone had changed over the years. The building is in a great position and has it's own interesting history. Free parking and public toilets adjacent.
R.
Interesting local history of factories now closed that once supplied the nation. Brands that have now disappeared from the shelves that were widely available. Memory lane.
P.
Awesome little museum, a must see for all.
A.
An interesting glimpse into the history and culture of the initial settlers, but also of various historical periods of the area. Standout section for me was the recreation of the immigrant boat cabin. Small, dark and pokey, but luckily they didn't try to recreate the smell. Plenty of other things to see ranging from the mildly interesting to the very interesting.
C.
In an Art Deco building situated along Petone foreshore with views overlooking Wellington , this museum celebrates the history of Maori and the first settlers in the area.
The museum also has informative displays on the types of industry which were thriving in the earlier years in the Petone area.
The building used to be a bathing pavilion and part of the building has been preserved to display this era in time.
Industries like Gear meat works and Griffins are on display as well as Unilever makers of sunlight and lux soap.
Well worth stopping for an hour to learn about local history.
