Reviews of Mangawhai Cliff Walk
A.
Once we found the actual walk (you have to start by walking along the beach) this was a really enjoyable (although slightly longer than anticipated) walk. Stunning views. Kids handled it (just) at 10yrs and 13yrs. If you are cutting it fine for tides you can walk it in reverse - all the way along the beaches then cliffotps on the way back. Definitely worth the effort though!
A.
Loved this walk which we did on a sunny summers day which offered beautiful views.
Our summary:
- 2h20 mins for us, return from car park. We’re 50 and didn’t take the kids. We’re of reasonable fitness (we walk approx 12K steps per day) and found each end a good workout heading up the stairs / incline.
- As it was mid-high tide, we walked the track there and back as opposed to the beach one way - this was 9.3km return from the car park.
- The access to the track is approx 1km up the beach from the car park (clearly sign posted).
- There is considerable time in the sun so recommend a hat and water.
- The track is in great condition - good walking shoes recommended but we saw people walking it OK in jandals / sandals.
- It is steep at each and - we gained a total of 355m with the highest altitude being 117m above sea level.
- If you walk the beach first as opposed to the track (only at mid-low tide), you will find the track signposted just after going through the big rock arch at the far end of the track. We were at this end of the track by the arch approx 2-hours before high tide and the water was waist deep through the arch.
M.
Great picnic and holiday spot. Great panoramic views on cliff walks and great for beach activities. Must do if you plan to visit this area.
D.
Another amazing hike/walk to be added to my list (and you should add to yours too! 😊)
Before you can reach the start of the track, you first have to take a walk along the marvelous Mangawhai Heads beach — quite a stretch but worth it.
Then first 10-15 minutes of the track almost killed me and my lungs (lol) because of the relentless incline but don’t give up as it becomes easier eventually and again very much worth it… the views are just indescribably stunning 😍
Track is about 2.5 hours return (took longer for me because I had to take numerous stops for rest and photos), then a dip in the beach is just perfect. There was also a frozen ice cream stand nearby which is the perfect ending to the hike 🍦
s.
very nice place to spend a day. Cliff walk is easy and takes around 10 mins to the top. view is perfect. beach is long and view is perfect. Food places at few mins drive.
K.
Took a good three hours to do the whole walk up the cliff and back via the rocky beach. Medium level of fitness but overall not too hard. Recommend decent tread on your shoes to walk on the rock. Great experience.
M.
I loved this beach 🤩. Wonderful walk alongside. White sand 😍🤩 I was interested to do the long walk for 3 hours but didn't have time. I would love to do it.
C.
Breathtaking. Figuratively and literaly. The stairs are hell. The signs say only do the beach walk at mid to low tide. Aim for low tide, or be prepared to do the stairs for a 2nd time.
B.
It's a great walk up the hills looking out over the water to off shore islands. Nice track through nature If you do it at a low tide you wander back along the beach. Lots of bays to explore on the beach wander.
C.
The entrance is along the beach, and there are some pretty steep parts so make sure you are fit! Otherwise excellent walk, amazing views 🤩
K.
Awesome walk going around the cliffs, such stunning views of the ocean. By the time I got to the end, the tide was low enough to go down to the beach and walk back along the beach, still had to wade through a bit of water at the beginning but it was safe. Good 2 hour walk, lots of stairs though
A.
Such a great place for summer . Surfing 🏄♀️ for fun and enjoy your time .
D.
An easy 10 min walk up to the first lookout point! Worth going up !
A.
Absolutely loved this track. Wrll maintained and marked. Would definitely try other tracks 👣 love love loved it. A must do. Stunning views from the top. So magical. So lucky to live in such a beautiful country ❤
W.
Amazing walk! Definitely a must do on your Northland itinerary! We did the full loop walk, took 3 hours including plenty of stops for water, photos and snacks on the beach. Really enjoyed the spectacular views along the cliffs and the rocky beaches plus stone arch. Varied landscapes and views. Great toilets and car parking at the start. Thoroughly recommend!
S.
Awesome trail! The loop at the low tide is just amazing. It require a certain level of fitness and care to walk on loose rocks. It took us 2 hours to finish the loop, almost 8km in total counting the main beach section.
Á.
Easy walk up to the hill but the view on the top is priceless 🥰
T.
A beautiful walk along the coastline, including some bush. To return via the shoreline make sure you are returning on a outgoing low tide. We found a whale head on the beach on the way back. A reasonable level of fitness is required, as there are a lot of stairs.
M.
Amazing views from this walkway!
It’s a fairly easy hike, too. After walking down the beach to the walkway, it’s a short climb up. Be sure to do the entire trail, and walk down to the rocky beach at the end to see the Natural Arch.
We did this hike many times when we were staying in the area, and enjoyed it every time!
A “must do” and “must see” when you are anywhere near Manghawai!
m.
amazing views! we did not finish the loop but we are in awe of the views there. just be careful as it is steep. Not for beginners though. beach is awesome
A.
This is such an amazing walk, you can choose to walk the beach and come back the cliff top or vice versa, or a return walk on the cliff. Beautiful views and lovely bays to swim. The start & finish of the cliff top walk have a climb but is manageable for most people, the track flattens out at the top. Enjoy 😉
R.
One of the most beautiful walks I've done. The view is breathtaking! I can't wait to go back and do it again.
K.
Amazing walkway!! Wow 🤩
I highly recommend this magical place! 🤤🥳😎🤠 you start walking along the beach, you can see small sand dunes, then going up the cliff walk and it gives you spectacular views on Mangawhai heads and it’s pure beauty 😍 , then you go down and see amazing rocks and go through some sort of ark climbing 🧗🏽♂️ up the rocks if you don’t want to get wet (for 2min only and it’s not super high).
Carpark is big enough. Check tides time not to get stuck on your way back. Bring some food to enjoy even more the moment, please take all your rubbish with you. Enjoy! 😉
A.
Good walk trails, beautiful views, I like the white sand rock. In addition to the views car park is quite good and amazing view from the car park.
C.
Quite a nice day walk over the heads and along the beach. First know there are a few rules since this goes through private land. No dogs are allowed and stay on the trail, also this track is closed September and October for lambing season. If you plan on doing the full loop with a return on the beach, check the tides as beach access is only possible between mid-low tide. Allow 2:30-3:00 for the entire loop. To access the trail you park in the lot and walk north along the beach past a few houses, there you will see a green trail sign. You have the option to climb up to the cliff walk or just continue along the beach and do the loop backwards. The climb up is quite steep with stairs (400+ steps) and can take about 20-30 minutes depending on fitness. It’s also quite exposed to the sun and wind. There are a a couple of lookouts at the top and a bench to take a break. After the initial climb the track the trail winds along the cliff tops weaving in and out of the bush and precariously along exposed slopes. Extra care should be taken with small children as the edge of some of the paths are loose and the slope can be really steep. As you approach the end of the cliff walk there are just as many stairs to go down to the Arch at the rocky beach below. This beach has heaps of smooth flat rocks perfect for stacking cairns. The walk back along the shore can be quite tricky because of all the loose rocks and is a bit of a scramble. The are some nice private sandy coves and plenty of nice spots for a picnic, etc.
A.
Stunning walk; highly recommend!
B.
Really cool loop hike. First on top of the cliff and finish walking alongside the beach. Around 2 hours return.
l.
Great walk with breathtaking views. You can loop back via the beach but make sure it's at least 3 hours before high tide otherwise the water will be too high. Total walk was around 3 hours.
K.
In order to get on the trail you need to make a short walk on the beach first and than start climbing the stairs to get on top of the hill which is a big difficult in the beginning. You can do the trail on top of the cliff and than return back walking on the beach (however this can be done when low tide)
S.
Best on a sunny day. Good to have a body board on the sand dunes.
N.
Lovely walk. Make sure to check the tides to ensure you are able to walk back along the beach front.
T.
Peaceful stroll with great views along the way. Be sure to check the tide tables - return along the beach only possible during low-mid tide.
B.
Beautiful hideaway - great beach with some amazing sand dunes. The market on Saturday is worth a visit.
G.
Awesome views and walks, great atmosphere for a picnic 😀
K.
Watch the tides if you plan to do the loop to walk along the beach, which is very rocky. We got a bit wet anyway just at one point. Quite a few stairs to get up and down from the cliffs but well worth it. We took three hours return, with lots of stops for photos. Take water and be sun smart.
P.
Some awesome views with a nice easy walk along top of cliffs. Only difficult part is the stairs at start of walk from the beach. But well worth the exercise.
G.
Great walk with truly spectacular views!
A reasonable level of fitness required for the rock climbing and stairways.
J.
Beautiful hike with great views. Not too long or difficult and thus also possible with children. We loved it.
E.
This place is very beautiful. You can see the wonderful emerald sea and white waves
😆😆😆👍👍👍
C.
Such a beautiful walk!! There are quite a bit of stairs and uphill/ downhill so be prepared but the views are definitely worth it!
A.
Excellent coastal views, 3 hr hike. cliff trail starts 1/4 mile along the beach at green sign near house/road. If going out on the beach (low tide +/- 3 hrs) you will not find cliff trail until past the rock arch in the pic, this is about 5 bays along beach.
L.
Well groomed tracked, easy to follow, was really nice to walk along the beach at low tide. Beautiful walk and amazing views. Took as 2 hours in total.
V.
No words can describe the Amazing landscape! What a nice walk! You won’t be disappointed!!
R.
You have to do this trail. What a view....what a place!!
P.
Magnificent, to say the least. The rock formations are unreal, there is even a rock that looks like a very big Crocodile and a formations that walkers can sit to eat their lunch. Go to the Mangawhai Heads Surf Life Club, park your car and walk to your hearts content. Take bottle with you and enjoy. Pete.
L.
A bit of a walk (we took about 3-4 hours round trip), but it was absolutely beautiful and the cliff walk was just spectacular!! If you start with the cliff walk and then go to the beach to come back, make sure you time it so that you walk back during low tide; otherwise, you will have to walk back from where you already walked. It is impossible to cross via the beach during high tide! All in all, bring water and lots of space in your camera— you’ll love it! ps: if you’re able to do tons of stairs then go for it! Otherwise, it may be a bit of a challenge.
E.
An amazing walk. Beautiful long stretched sand beaches. Black sand, silver sand, yellow sand, white sand.
B.
Stunning walk..medium level fitness, walk the beach low tide n enjoy the amazing views of mangawhai and beyond
A.
The trail starts 1k down the beach from the carpark and toilets. It's a beautiful walk on a well maintained trail with panoramic views of land and sea. Some spots go right along the cliff and others into the bush a bit. Some fitness is required as there are plenty of stairs up and down. Allow extra time for the beach portion (only accessible at low and medium tide) because the rocks are relatively unstable. Unless you're not stopping for water or photos, allow 3 hours for the trail alone.
D.
A great walk along the cliffs and back along the beach if the tides are right.
K.
Great one. Return about 3 to 4 hours.
Wide view from the top, the beach is clean. Track is good.
P.
one of the best short walks on the north island. Check tide before you go, the beach section is only doable at half tide or lower
K.
Lovely walk with great views
M.
You will need about 3 hours to do the round trip but it is a spectacular walk
T.
Great walk, do it on low tide. There are steps but it's worth it.
J.
Gorgeous walk along the beach that snakes up the cliff and over looks the ocean.
S.
Outstanding views as you walk t j is trail. Well maintained track with a variety of terrain. Loved it.
A.
Breathtaking views, make sure go time the return with low tides.
S.
Exhausting tracks but views are nice
舞.
Beautiful hike. Go at low tide so you can walk up the hill and return on the beach!
M.
Done cliff run a few times now. Great 'go to' for a blow out.
M.
Awesome view! Great walk!
C.
An easy walk with absolutely stunning view
N.
Did part of the Goldschmidt Panoramic Walk to the top of the first hill and were rewarded with great views. It was an easy walk to the top of the hill and the kids managed it fine. Plenty of parking at the bottom of the hill, toilet facilities and a water fountain.
A.
Nice and challenging. Please bring proper shoes. Heaps of rocks to walk on.
P.
Nice wee walk up to the lookout. Takes about 30mins from the car park.
C.
Beautiful and well laid out you can do this in trainers
L.
Superb! Awesome walk, magnificent views. Do this walk!
D.
Nicely formed track, up some steps to a great view. We timed it right with the out going tide so we could walk back along the beach rock hopping.
S.
Nice views and easy walk. The first part is up hill but then you can loop back along the beach to make an easy finish. To do the beach return, need to avoid high tide
A.
Great walk and fantastic sea view
A.
Spectacular clifftop walk. The cliffs are at a dizzying height. Best walk we found in the Mangawhai area. Lovely beach walk at the start , best tackled at low tide. We saw a couple of White Faced Heron on the path Infront of us who took off flapping there wings high over the cliffs.
C.
This is an awesome walk not too be missed when visiting Mangawhai. There are some steep parts but the views are with it. Check the rides if you are wanting to walk along the beach section.
L.
Definitely worth to go. Easy tramping for most of people.
J.
It was a beautiful day to walk on the beach and enjoy the energizing affect of nature
J.
The walk was nice, but only about 20 minutes of the walk you can see the cliffs and water. It's about an hour one way along the cliffs, and at low tide you can walk along the water. But it's all little rocks and hard to walk on. It was hard to find. You have to park at the beach and then walk down the beach to find the entrance to the walk.
J.
Amazing view, fantastic experience!
M.
Amazing views up and down the coast. Steep in parts.
P.
Awesome day out. Have a swim to top it off.
R.
A must do for any visitor, spectacular
R.
Not really worth it this walk, you have to wait for the tide to go out, you can see the coastline from the other lookout right of the beach carpark so when I was up on the track it seemed underwhelming. The beach a smaller too so would be ideal for younger kids. If you want to surf definitely westcoast is best coast.
C.
The cliff walk is just amazing. It takes upto 2 hours approx. to complete the trek. Love the view of the turquoise blue beach❤️💙
E.
Very nice place
A.
Amazing walk and views!
D.
Beautiful view from top. Takes approximately 3 hours to complete the walk. May have to come back through water if tides are mid to high.
J.
Lovely walk that starts up the hill part the way along the beach after heading north from the life saving club and car park.
Not only is the walking interesting and well made, the islands to the East and really interesting and the foaming surf onto the black rocks and beautiful contrast.
If that is not enough, there are lambs sheet rolling hills AND modern architecture of the lucky ones with homes along the way.
A.
This is a great walk which takes in a range of scenery and walking styles. I did it with a family with young kids and although hard and tiring for little legs chocolate got them through. They especially enjoyed wading through the tidal rocks when coming off the cliff track and onto the beach for the return leg. The lava columns are quite a sight. Don't forget to protect from the sun as reflection off the water is quite serious on this walk.
A.
Very cool views! Would recommend
S.
Stunning
J.
Excellent walk. I walked out along the coast first in order to make it through the keyhole rock at low tide, then up the stairs and back along the cliff walkway on the return. Incredibly scenic, awesome little beaches, quite breathtaking at some points with the cliffs right next to the path.
L.
One of my favourite walks in NZ! The cliffs, the native bush, the Beach with undless shells and at the Parking lot you also find a lot of small nice walks with beautiful views, happy Days! Stay away if you are afraid of heights.
B.
Beautiful views. It is a bit steep on the way up but there are plenty of places to stop and enjoy the views. Once above the first part it is a much easier walk.
J.
Absolutly beautiful nature scenery bit of everything highly recommend to go on low tide as the beach walk back is intersting as much as top walk . We did not have a sun that day but was very hot and dip into clear beautiful water on way back was treat :)
J.
The walk is very enjoyable. Walk the cliff first and return by the beach. Stunning views and the path is well kept. For a 70 year old she found this way of doing the walk more manageable. Magical Mangawhai at its best!!
K.
Awesome walk with the best view! Loved it and was such a nice last walk before flying home.
A.
Fantastic views out to the Hen and Chickens. Good exercise but not too demanding. Take some food and water, and make sure you check the tides if you're coming back along the beach!
M.
A really nice walk along the cliffs with some awesome views. Keep in mind that you can also walk along the beach but only when it’s low tide.
Y.
It's a nice beautiful walk along the coast line. The walkway begins with a number of steep stair steps. But once you're at the top, it's all very beautiful and scenic.
S.
Beautiful walk, best done at low or mid tide so that you can enjoy the beach.
A.
Great views, wear appropriate footwear thou, as the beach side of the walk has lots of rocks to walk over, cliif side walk has a well maintained walk
E.
You will find it's worthy to spend at least your 2 hours time walking and return by the same way. The color of sea is amazing. Don't try to find a track connect to the beach when you see someone is walking along, as there is no way, he/she is just from the beach near the track entrance.
T.
Super beautiful views
S.
Best of the outdoors with great coastal views and bushwalk elements. It's a long walk but not too difficult. Water and possibly snacks for the return trip are recommended.
M.
Great walk with wonderful views, definitely do this during low tide, so you can walk back along the beach.
M.
Awesome but tiring. Take food and a drink.
E.
Spectacular cliff views!!!
A.
Beautiful day made for a beautiful walk, stunning views
k.
It was pretty awesome. You have a great view of the ocean and the big hills/mountains of Mangawhai. Cool trail with lots of steep drops so don't fall. 😆😆😆😆😆
D.

V.
Beautiful, gorgeous beach and views
E.
Be sure to check the tides if walking along the coast line.
P.
Really nice and easy track along the coast.
M.
Short, steep walk to an amazing lookout out onto crystal clear waters where you can watch people surf :)
R.
Perfect for beginners surfing... White sand and not much dangerous wave to play with. Looks very funny place
A.
Best single 3 hour walk in all of New Zealand. Beach, hills, tide pools, rocky outcrops, shady area, Nikau forest, some Manuka, bizarre bits of geology, amazing views of the crystal clear beaches and the islands out to sea. Like Able Tasman, Heaphy, many other NZ tracks and parts of Hawaii all roles into one short incredibly diverse walk.
V.
Stunning!
F.
My lovely English teacher recommended here. It’s a really nice place for hiking. Stunning views and no difficulties. Suit for family weekend hiking.
M.
Great views over the beautiful beach, ocean, islands, Mangawhai Heads town. Nice few minutes of leg exercise.
A.
Awesome walkway my favourite walk ever. Department of Conservation have done a very good job at maintaining the track. I loved the view. A must do for all visitors to Mangawhai Heads. Do wear shoes or Hiking Boots as the track has got tricky terrain.
R.
Nice cliff waking. One of the best beach for swimming and outing. Worth a visit
D.
Mean as good views
L.
Awesome views & scenary. The steps up are a bit challenging, but there are plenty of opportunities to catch your breath as you pause to take in the gorgeous views
W.
Excellent views of the sea and the many coves. Incredibly scenic. There are though alot of steps at the beginning and at the end. Well worth it.
B.
Walk along the beach from the carpark which is where you will find the cliff walk. Would recommend walking up the cliff first and then take the beach walk as you head back to the main carpark.
J.
Nice path to walk, lots going on, great views
P.
Love it.
G.
We only went to the first lookout but the view was great and lovely walk along the beach to get to the start of the track.

(Translated) From the parking lot, go out to the beach, walk north on the sandy beach and walk for a while, and you will see the loop truck information board.
We recommend walking clockwise on the cliff first. The first climb is tough, but the climb is shorter and easier than counterclockwise.
For several hours before and after high tide, the beach course will be submerged and you will not be able to walk.
Let's aim before and after low tide.
The scenery is very beautiful, so I recommend you to do your best! !!

(Translated) Beautiful walk that starts from the Mangawhai Heads. Pay attention to the low tide and then run the other way round, i.e. start over the beach and then back upstairs. In the end, the prospects on the Cliff Walkway are more beautiful, since you don't always have to turn around. With one of the most beautiful spots in Northland - recommended !!

(Translated) 2h15min is estimated to mean walking over the cliff and returning back the same way. Because the road along the beach is full of rocks, it takes an extra hour
(Original)
2h15min 估计是指,从悬崖走过去,再原路返回。因为沿海滩的路全是乱石堆,需要额外一小时

(Translated) Great hiking trail with fantastic views along the cliffs. About 2-3 h. The way back over the coast / beach can only be done at low tide, so plan your time accordingly (information about high tide and low tide is available on the beach), otherwise just back up again.
