Reviews of Hobbiton Village, New Zealand
B.
Awesome experience wander around Hobbiton, seeing where parts of the film were produced. The imagination and talent of some incredible people. So much detail in everything made.
K.
Such a magical experience. We were late on our scheduled time due to unforeseeable circumstances but the staff were so considerate to accommodate us in the next trip.A perfect place to bond with your family and kids.
J.
Good place to visit, good knowledgeable tour guides to go with a photogenic location. Cafe serves good quality food in a nice airy location.
G.
Whether you like the movies, books or neither, this is a must see! It is so interesting to get an insight into how the movie was made and just how intricate every detail is. My wife and I had a fantastic time and Keith, our guide, was perfect in explaining the many scenes and sharing some laughs on the way too.
I would definitely recommend this for anyone, the complimentary drink at The Green Dragon is something to look forward to and the views and landscapes are stunning! 10/10 from us through and through.
K.
As a massive Tolkien fan, Hobbiton was everything I hoped it would be. A beautifully maintained movie set, surrounded by some of the best views NZ has to offer. Each Hobbit hole looked so perfectly settled into the landscape, and all the gardens were in bloom (and buzzing with life) - it felt like stepping into a real village rather than a movie set. Our tour guide was friendly and very knowledgeable about the source material, taking the time to point out the interesting parts and sharing fun facts about the filming and production of the site. There was also plenty of time given to wander around at each spot to get photos or appreciate the finer details that were put into the set. Enjoying a cold drink in the Green Dragon Inn was a perfect way to end the tour and I hope to have a chance to visit again someday. Highly recommended to anyone who is a fan of the books, movies or simply wants to appreciate the beauty of NZ’s landscape.
D.
What a great excursion! We loved this place. You will have a guide assigned to your group. Our guide shared a lot of fun facts and information about the village, farm and and the movie set, which is about 13 acres in size. There are 43 Hobbit Holes, fabulous scenery, the Green Dragon eatery and a nice gift shop at the Hobbit Village. There is another gift shop and restaurant at the parking area. This one is a must... well worth the time and expense.
N.
What an awesome experience, magical, detailed and really immersive. Staff were amazing even down to the Chef and barman! Definitely be coming back again soon!
C.
Great place our friends wedding, sunset was amazing. Good hosts, we’ll organised
L.
In my opinion, $89 for an adult is well overpriced. Despite being a wonderful tour, but not much fun for adults, just watching some holes quickly from outside. The guided tour was a bit rushed. There was not enough time to appreciate all the details, and you could not take all the photos you would like. Self-guided would be better, I think. Honestly and heartily, I would not do it again. By the way, the free drink at the end of the tour was nice (if luckily the weather is good.)
S.
This tour exceeded all my expectations for "The Hobbiton Movie Set " experience.Great bus/ tour guide Kevin brought the movie set to live experiences for us all on the trip!Highly reccomend. Will return one day for a meal and/or evening tour.
M.
One of the most amazing places that we visited during our road trip around New Zealand!!
If you are a LOTR or Hobbit fan, you MUST visit Hobbiton while you are traveling in NZ!
It is the actual place where the movies were shot. The original Hobbit village constructed for the LOTR movies was mostly dismantled, then rebuilt in a more permanent way for the Hobbit movie series shoot.
The tour guide was friendly, informative, and engaging. She made sure that we didn’t feel rushed, and that we had plenty of time to take photos. She also made sure to help everyone that wanted their photos taken in front of the Hobbit houses or other famous places in Hobbiton.
We were there on a less busy day, (I would recommend scheduling your tour on a less busy weekday, and avoid holidays) so we were able to spend quite a bit of time getting photos and enjoying the scenery.
I particularly enjoyed seeing Frodo and Bilbo’s Hobbit house, Sam’s house, the party grounds, and the Green Dragon pub.
It was like being inside the movies and the scenes that I have watched so many times.
We spent about half an hour in the Green Dragon having a few pints of Ale, then spent a while wondering through the huge gift shop.
You can drive to Hobbiton if you have a rental car, but if it is a busy time, parking may be a bit limited. We chose to buy the tickets online that included the bus ride out to Hobbiton to avoid parking problems and enjoy the scenery. It was a good choice for us, as the more than 3 hours that we were able to spend there was more than enough time to see everything.
Definitely put this on your list as a “must do” when you come to New Zealand!

A must visit for all Tolkien and LOTR/Hobbit fans - and even if you're not, this is a great way to spend a couple of hours in the beautiful New Zealand countryside. The tour is well organised and there is a good website with all the information you need. There's ample parking, a cafe, gift shop and clean toilets. A short bus trip will take you to the set location and your guide will give you all the background information you'll need about the tour and the history behind Hobbiton. There are over 40 Hobbit holes on the site and you'll wind your way around the village over a period of about an hour. You'll enjoy trying to decide what is real/natural and what are simply props (so you think those cobwebs are real?) - the level of detail is quite remarkable. The guides give you great insights into the making of the film and some of the secrets. You'll end the tour at the Green Dragon Inn - a fully working establishment - where you can enjoy a free glass of local cider (or coffee/tea if your prefer) and snacks are available. It takes about 2 hours in total. The only way to see it is to take the organised tour - self-guided tours are not permitted as you are on private farmland.
C.
Worth a trip even if you live nearby! Great for showing your international visitors! Our guide Sonny was a highlight, super knowledgeable and seems like someone that loves his job!
The ale pie was sooo good and the gift shop wasn’t too pricey!
Highly recommend!
J.
One of the best tourist experiences in New Zealand. Very professional and organised and on time. Bus from the start point was air conditioned and there were share umbrellas for our walk. Ellis was our your house and he was knowledgeable, courteous and happy to take photos. I thoroughly recommend the tour to Tolkein nerds and also those that have never read the books or seen the movie. It's a beautiful location and the tour of Hobbiton was a lot of fun. It was a very hot day and the beer In the green dragon was very welcome.
J.
Wonderful tour for anyone interested in Tolkien or movie making process. Fascinating behind the scenes of one of the world's biggest film series. Really interesting stuff
S.
Was an.awsome tour ,was alot more relaxed without all the overseas tourist's . And the second breakfast was just delicious. Will go again.
M.
Wow! What an amazingly beautiful and photogenic spot. Even if you are not familiar with the books or movies this would still be a wonderful experience. Some very lucky ducks living there.
C.
We had the evening banquet at the Hobbiton. Oh wow its the best tour I’ve ever had! The best value too! We spent 4 hours there, from the tour, to the drink at the pub then the feast at the Green Dragon Inn. Big shout out to their most friendly staffs. There wasn’t a dull moment!
Whether you like the movie or not, It’s worth going!
N.
OK- I have lived here for ever but never been to Hobbiton - wow what a cool place - Yes it is a movie set, yes the tour runs to a schedule so you need to move on through - but wow what a cool place. This is real farm land and the village feels so real - you almost expect hobbits to start walking out of the homes. Wonderful.
T.
Amazing. As soon as you enter you feel like you are there. There are so many little details which make this place feel more real. The upkeep is great. The staff was also really friendly and gave lots of small facts about the set that you wouldn't know.
G.
Must visit, if you’re a Hobbit our lord of the rings fan. Book a tour and get inside info on the houses and the village. Even though we visited in autumn, everything was green. This might be a bonus for your visit, but it’s arguable, if they should water everything, with an ongoing sprinkler ban.
Enjoy a beer (I didn’t like either of it) in the tavern and spent hundreds of dollars in the expensive shop at the end.
Definitely worth a visit!
G.
Awesome pub...wish I could stay... Awesome place to visit
R.
I was expecting to be underwhelmed... But was pleasantly surprised. Really good guide made the sets come to life. Everything was good quality from the sound system in the coaches to the specially beer, cider or ginger beer in the Green Dragon pub. Happy to recommend
J.
Amazing experience! Exceeded expectations. Highly recommended. Wonderful tour guide.
D.
I visited Hobbiton three times in the span of a week— in a group tour, private tour, and for the evening banquet tour. This set felt like home. It’s gorgeously maintained and absolutely perfect. For any Tolkien fan, it’s like stepping into the books. It’s familiar and wonderful. All of my guides were enthusiastic and a pleasure to spend time with. I cannot recommend visiting this site enough. It’s been two years, and I’ve been dreaming of going back ever since I left.
B.
We really enjoyed our visit here. It was on our travel bucket list and we were not disappointed. The weather was fantastic, the tour guide sounded like he was having a great day and the people around were all smiling, giving a great vibe to the day. It was just so relaxing to wander through Hobbiton.
M.
Lovely experience :) came back 9 years after and still had fun! Craig and sunny were great guides thank u for thr adventure :)
K.
Amazing experience! This is so well organized the tours. We participated in a group tour which was a slightly larger group, likely as it was the first tour of the day - but it was managed so professionally. There was enough time at a few stops for each person to get their photos done (and the guides were more than happy to help take them). Loved the mix of story telling and the photo opportunities. Learned lots about film making in general and also how specific scenes were made.
M.
The Hobbiton film set exceeded my expectations on every level! I've been a fan of the books and films for many years, so I had high expectations when we went to visit Hobbiton. The attention to detail throughout the tour was incredible, and the tour guides were full of fantastic little bits of information. We definitely recommend the tour that includes the lunch at the Green Dragon Inn. The food and dessert were delicious and included a variety of dishes. If you are ever in New Zealand, make a point of visiting the Hobbiton set. You will not leave disappointed!
L.
The set is amazing! You get to see everything and the guide tells you all about the scenes filmed where you are. I really recommend looking at scenes from the movies right before coming here and listening to the music.
We also had the buffet. It is good food, but nothing spectacular, if it fits your schedule you could eat lunch here, but don't go out of your way to do it. If you want to save money then skip it.
M.
Such an amazing experience, we got to attend the evening banquet, the desserts were so delicious. An absolutely incredible experience- followed by a lantern lit evening tour. The employees were funny and welcoming. 10/10 everyone should go, I want to go again.
i.
This place is a fairy tale come true. I'm not a fan of Hobbit movie but I really like this place. Everything is awesome and they organize it really well. There will be a tour guide who will remind us about the movie and the spots, including the effect. So, it feels alive. At the end of the journey there will be a place that you can go inside and feels like in a hobbit home. They will give you ginger beer and it's so tasty. Bring back memories of the movie. The best thing is when you look again on the pictures you have taken, all will look so amazing.
E.
The typical LOTR franchise fan bucketlist check.
Beautifull scenes and so well looked after making the whole experience so real.
Only downside was that the shop did not have my ring size so I will definately have to visit again!
C.
Enjoyed this much more than we expected. Perfect time of year to go in late spring/early summer, weather was perfect, all the flowers were out and it had the slightly untamed Hobbiton feeling. Not too many people, guide was fantastic, and it was at the perfect pace to enjoy it. The whole area is amazing, fairly large around a lake with a lot of hobbit holes and beautiful landscaped. Very much felt like you were in Hobbiton rather than it being a movie set. Just a shame they didn't at least have one hobbit hole that had an interior fully carved out and decorated.
B.
Was a magical place to visit with the family. Lots of interesting new information. Sunny our guide added to the experience with his humor and knowledge. Looking forward to going again sometime.
s.
We had such a great time on this tour. We cant say enough how great it was to have Pete the repeat as our tour guide. He made it fun, was informative and by his own words a massive nerd. We knew we were in for a great time when he lead us on our merrily way around hobbiton. The tour was beautiful and if you have seen the movies or read the books this is a must do in NZ.
E.
Amazing!! Waited our while trip for this day and it didn't disappoint! The guide was very informed and answered all questions. For someone who's a fan it is definitely worth a visit! I took about 80 photos and have never done that an attraction before!
d.
Well worth the stop. The set is so unique and we'll kept you'd swear that hobbits actually we're living there. The staff are amazing, friendly, and knowledgeable. Bring your camera, you'll want to take lots of pictures.
C.
Wow, this place is so gorgeous! The details at every hobbit hole and the Green Dragon are incredible. Each tour guide is so friendly and full of knowledge and behind the scenes info. The lunch tour was well worth it, the food was delicious and there were so many options! If anyone is considering this tour, LOTR fan or not, I highly recommend it. It’s a magical place.
L.
Loved getting to see and hear about the background to the movies. Nice activity for the family to enjoy, great guide who was willing to share many hidden details.
M.
Forget about the rest race of the cities, use your imagination and for a couple hours you will feel like you live in this beautiful magical village. Each house has an incredible amount of details outside, such has a complete chessboard or laundry on the line. Unfortunately you won't be able to go inside the houses as the indoor scenes were shot in a studio, but still highly recommended, you will love it even if you haven't watched the movie such as myself.
A.
We had a tour with lunch yesterday. It was my partner birthday. We had the best possible tour guide Josh. He is so great! Very fun, helped me with the bday cake and he is very interactive!
Hobbiton is a wonderful place, even if you didn’t see the movie.
The lunch food is good, just not enough time to eat...(45 min) and you have to wait (table by table) for your turn. I didn’t have time for desserts.
S.
What a view!! Loved visiting this Lord of the Rings and Hobbit movie set, our tour guide was great and funny. She was very informative as well as witty. The views are worth the cost and also includes a drink inside the Green Dragon! (Make sure to try out the ale or cider)
S.
The detail that has gone into this village is incredible. There's people that work full time to ensure its authenticity is maintained, such as clothes hanging up on washing lines, real vegetables growing, fishing rods set up in the lake. Suitable for adults and children, fans and non fans.
F.
A must visit place for Lord of the Rings fans. Even though the actual set for the movies where remade to the current stand for the Hobbit movies, it's still a great place to visit. You get a guided tour with a set group, and at the end you get a chance to relax a bit in the green dragon Inn with a complimentary drink.
T.
Our tour guide, Ed, did a phenomenal job! He brought so much energy and excitement and was super friendly and knowledgeable! This is definitely a must see for Tolkien fans!
A.
I was not expecting much from this experience and was a little bummed that it would be our last day in New Zealand but I was shocked by how amazing this place was. I literally cried when we walked into the shire. I have read the Hobbit to all three of my boys and I felt like was walking into the book. Absolutely incredible and I loved our guide.
M.
Experience that cannot be described in words, Must go to place, kudos to Jacob and the rest of the team at Hobbiton
K.
I recently visited the Hobbiton village on my recent cruise. After watching all the movies and having read the books honestly this just had to be a must do activity while in the area. Even without knowing the Hobbit or lord of the rings, the location and details of the village were just magnificent a must do for any fan or just someone wanting to see what to me can be described a beautiful work of art. Tour guide was so knowledgeable and clearly knew what they were talking about and really made the experience that much better by describing different parts of the area as we went along. I would say this was one of the best things I have done and if your in the area just visit! Hopefully will be back one day. Dreams do come true.
B.
If you are into the Lord of the airings of the Hobbit trilogies, then this a must visit for you. Rebuilt for the Hobbit movies, after the original polystyrene and plywood village was taken out after the Lord of the Rings, the owners have developed a thriving tourism business for fans of the movies. The guide stated that about 40% of visitors have never seen any of the movies. Allow about 2 hours from pick up to drop off for the walking tour and drink in the The Shire Pub at the end. Leaving from the visitor Center on a bus your guide talks you through the history of the village and then some movie clips to show you locations. Once on set, you guide walks you through each of the hobbit holes and describes the scenes in which they appear.
Heavy price tag but if you are a fan of the movie, worth it. If you like English style gardens you will also be satisfied with lots of flowers, birds and insects.
R.
This place is a must if you are a fan of either of the series!
If you love gardening and horticulture, this is a must go.
If you are a movie buff or enjoy production and what it takes to go into a movie, this is a must go!
Tours are booked!!!
Book in advance!!!
If you truly want the ultimate goal in the evening for dinner with the town let up, truly spectacular.
J.
It was super cool and informative, the guides really know their stuff, including fun facts about certain prop pieces and where actors where. My favorite facts had to be just how picky Peter Jackson was in terms of what everything looked like.
E.
Would love to visit this beautiful place..had an amazing experience. The guide will take u around the place also u get to taste the beer which is only made der which was also amazing
O.
One of the most amazing places we visited. There are many little details make this place like real, love it 🥰
P.
The only reason I give it 4 stars is because of the gift shop, man they could use some help in that department. I was really sad to see a very limited amount of items to buy; the ones you could buy were all 100$ and up. I would have loved to get a small ring and chain for 20$ but they only have the real gold for about 150$ no chain. Other then that it was amazing thank you Josh for the tour and for all the photos, you are a sweetheart!
J.
Wow, absolutely amazing, you arrive in the middle of Shire and don't want to get out of here. The Hobbit holes are super neat with tons of small details you can't even absorb during the short tour. Put your camera away and just soak in the atmosphere, tiny hobbit houses, lake with the bridge and inn just as you know it from LOTR and the Hobbit. We've had Pete as a guide and he made our experience even more unique. Thumbs up. If you have a spare dime go for the dinner banquet option, the food here is amazing too. Nothing negative to mention truly overcame our expectations!
J.
I've never been much into seeking out places where movies were filmed, so I was reluctant to go to Hobbiton. However, were on a tour through New Zealand and it's included, so we're went. Oh my goodness, what a neat experience.
I would suggest watching the movies before you go, specifically the scenes in the Shire and Bag End, as well as the Green Dragon.
The experience starts well outside the Shire, but once you get going and arrive and start to move through the sets and learn the stories you'll immediately feel you've entered another realm.
By the time you get to the Green Dragon you'll feel like you've at least begun on the same journey the Bilbo Baggins began those many years ago.
B.
Get your inner LOTR nerd to the outside immediately. You'll fall in love with the detail of The Shire if you're a fan. If you're familiar with the books, or better, the movies, it's worth your time. 50%+ who go apparently haven't seen or read the story, if that's you skip this place.
The (noon-alcoholic) ginger beer at the Green Dragon was quite good too!
J.
This is a bucket list thing to do for everyone. Regardless if your a Lord of the rings fan or not.
The farm land it's on has simply stunning views in itself.
The tour you do isn't gimmicky st all. They talk a lot about behind the scenes stuff and you find out some stuff about the set that will just make your draw drop in amazement.
The tour is around 2 hours which includes a 5 min bus ride to the set and a walking tour with many breaks around the set with a final 15 min complementary drink break at the end of it.
This was worth every penny and it's an experience I will never forget.
It's a bonus if your a LOTR or Hobbit fan too ;)
J.
Such a cool place! The best thing. The tour guide explains a bunch of facts about the movies, and explains what each of the notable places along the village are.
The only reason it's not 5 stars is that you have to go with a group and are very much rushed through the village. Everyone is rushing to take their picture then get out of the way so it can be a bit hard to enjoy it without feeling like you're holding everyone up if you want to take a few pitctures!
G.
This place is pretty unique. If you are fan of the hobbit movies it is definitely the place you want to visit. There's proper system to handle huge amount of tourists. The place actually gives you that you are in a different hobbit world.
Definitely worth your time.
R.
Had a absolutely awesome day there, a definite must do. We had Benji as our tour guide. He was great.
A.
Sonny and Luke were brilliant hosts to the magical twilight tour and banquet dinner. Was a stuffed as a hobbit! Definitely worth it!
E.
Quick tour but well structured. Knowledgeable guides and amazing scenery make this a great place to visit if you even have a passing interest in lord of the rings. It feels like a real place and even on an overcast day it looks fantastic. I can only imagine that it looks that much nicer on a sunny day. Not cheap, but it was well worth the trip. Probably easier to get to on a tour, which is what I did, but there appears to be ample parking. I'd recommend going early for the best opportunity to get good shots. The one downside (?) Is that you'll have to drink your free beer quite early!
A.
Visited Hobbiton in December 2016, it was a great experience, the tour guides were fantastic. It is certainly a must for lord of the rings and hobbit fans.
L.
Our tour was Fabulous we really enjoyed it.Kevin our guide was very friendly and proud of the whole area. If you have a Gold Card ask when buying tickets if there is discount as the Website or ticket office didn't display that there was a $10 discount on.
J.
Awesome location and it's amazing what they have done to keep the set as it was during the movies, above all, the people who work there are so committed to their role and very knowledgeable. A memorable experience, maybe a bit expensive for many, but worth the visit!
N.
The most picturesque place! I wanted to become a hobbit and never leave... the tour guides have so many tid bits of information! Great day!
My only advice is get the tour from one of the bigger towns. There is nothing else to do in Mata Mata other than see Hobbiton. But if you want to spend the arvo curling up with a book then it’s perfect!
c.
We had Eli as our tour guide he was a lot of fun really friendly and knowledgeable, his patience was impeccable. A nice touch is the cool refreshing drink and the end of the tour at the green dragon
S.
Way cool! It's very busy and even helicopters were flying in with people. The tour is really fun though and pretty cool to be where they filmed the movies!
A.
Abouslutely worth it. The tour guides are very knowledgeable. They tell you the details etc and you can ask questions.
I am not a lotr fan but I enjoy watching it and it's nice to know the bits and pieces of the show props. The way it's been stuctured, even non lovers of lotr. Will enjoy.
The environment is rustic and very photogenic.. insta worthy
S.
Maybe a little pricy, but it's so cool that it's definitely worth the trip and the cost. The tour guide was a huge Tolkien nerd, there was lots of time for photos, and the grounds were immaculate, even though the country is in the midst of a major drought. The lunch buffet was very good, if you're considering it - don't eat beforehand.
A.
Loved the experience. A bit far from Auckland but worth it.
Doesn't matter if you're a fan or not of Lord of the Rings, this outdoor set is very much enjoyable
P.
So much fun. Well planned tours. Nicely spaced so although 4000 visitors a day groups are small 20 to 30. And separated. Included cider, beer, snack was welcome. Buy cider and beer in shop at end of tour
J.
Really awesome place to go-- the tour guides are very knowledgeable and Hobbiton was amazing. Tours are spaced quite close together and it can be a bit crowded at times. Nevertheless the experience is worth it. The food and drinks are good as well.
G.
An amazing creation.
The way in which it is built, detailed and accessorised makes you believe you could see Mr Frodo come waltzing around the corner any second.
My young boys who haven't seen the movies loved the village, especially as most of the hobbit holes are their size, or smaller.
The guide was quite knowledgeable about the village, when and why things were built as they were.
R.
If you're a fan of the Lord of the Rings, this is a "must go"! I thoroughly enjoyed visiting Hobbiton and the tour is so insightful too. You'll have to walk a bit but it's great to do so, as long as it doesn't rain. So try to pick a date with no rain clouds. It's well worth you money, provided that you wanted to go here since childhood (like me)
E.
A truly enchanting place to visit! The guide was lovely, the your didn't feel rushed, and the cold glass of ale at the end was excellent. This place is a fantastic slice of Middle Earth.
M.
Great tour! Tour guides are knowledgeable and you get plenty of time to get a photo of your favourite hobbit hole. A free drink at the green dragon is included in the tour.
M.
An evening of absolute delight. Our tour guide Shane took us on a hobbit adventure followed by a banquet fit for Dwarves, Hobbits and Orgs. After filling our tummies with delicious morsels we wandered back through the village with lanterns quietly so the Hobbits could sleep for tomorrow's visitors.
D.
It was a fantastic experience that I had long for, always been wanted to come here ever since they opened for public and finally, it's my dream comes true. Whatever you've watched in the movies, most of them were there, except for the interior of the hobbits house.
The only setback about this place is that you don't have enough time to take a lot of individual photos due to walking in groups and also the timeframe for each groups is quite limited.
S.
Absolutely amazing beautiful place fun experience will definitely be going again
R.
Absolutely amazing, just like stepping into the shire! All of the grounds are a genuine working farm and it gives the plage such a strong sense of authenticity that it really makes the trip. Combined with a great tour and the only brew for the brave and true I'd say it was one of new Zealands must see attractions.
T.
Beautiful...so much nostalgia for the books and movies. Wish wizarding world was more like this. Attention to detail, relatively peaceful and quiet. Lovely.
C.
+ Smooth busride from Rotorua (65 min). My guide was amazing! She knows here stuff, very positive and you can see that she loves her job. The site is very beautiful!
- The tour was shorter than i thought!
I think its to expensive for what you get!
J.
Amazing tour I would recommend to book your tour in advance if you can. They sometime have opening. However, it for the earlier tour. Later during the day is much better.
N.
Loved it. Just like it is a real city. Very fun guide was great as well.
S.
Amazing place to visit. Even if not a fan of LoR or Hobbit movies the set is amazing to check out. Plus one free beer at the end.
L.
A visually stunning place... what an incredible experience... bring bug spray if they like you and be prepared for alot of bees due to the flowers...
D.
Must have for all New Zealand visitors. It is a great place and excellent guided tour. If you book the lunch combo, you have only 45 minutes to eat. You have to book before!
F.
Magical place to travel with amazing Australian tour guide Emily. Bit of walk but not exhausting. Better go go there earlier part of the day.
p.
This is a 5 star if you care about the movie and love to see the movie set and props. The scenery is beautiful and amazing but for the price and time it takes to go there from Rotorua, it's only worth 4 stars. Especially since new Zealand is so beautiful everywhere. Some of the places is free to go if you drive like blue springs.
G.
Had a great morning. The tour guide was great and made it a great experience . The bus ride to the set was great with a wee video. The Hobbiton set was very cool. The tavern was great as we were able to put on costumes and have some fun. The Ale and Cider was also very nice. 😎

If you fly all the way to new zealand and are a lord of the rings fan, then I don't see why u shld not visit this place. Our guide Charles is a charming man and gave us a very good tour of the park.
T.
This place truly is the Shire when you go you get to eat like Hobbits drink like Hobbits and go in little hobbit houses. it was absolutely wonderful and I'll never forget it.
J.
It was worth the money you paid. Our tourist guide/bus driver, Theresa, was so amazing and friendly. Great trip on a sunny day. I will definitely go back there🤩
C.
Beautiful and spectacular place to visit, will not he disappointed wether you have seen the movies or not. So magical
J.
Beautiful scenery. Good to visit and understand the filming.
Great facilities, can get lunch, breakfast and coffee before you hop on the bus.
D.
Great place to visit for a LotR fan. They used to get over run with people, so now they require reservations & tickets. Still upwards of 3,500 people visitors each day.
If you time your visit with the seasons well, you can get a beautifully lush garden & flowers everywhere.
It's also an interesting place to visit if you're just interested in a bit of how the movies were made. There were a few people in our tour that weren't at all interested in the book(s) and hadn't seen any of the movies.
Our tour included a drink at the Green Dragon tavern which had the option of 2 different beers, a hard apple cider, or an alcohol free ginger beer.
M.
Fantastic. Great value for money & our tour guides Sonny & Teresa were brilliant!!
U.
Had an awesome tour of the Hobbiton set. Highly reccomend visiting this amazing set.
T.
I’ve been to a number of movie sets - nothing compares to this site. The bucolic sheep and lambs on the hills, the wind sweeping through the pines really allow this Tolkien fan to imagine the books & movie while standing on set. Highly recommend the tour, try and get Joshua (the Guy from England) to be your guide.
M.
Really enjoyed the tour by a knowledgable guide. Very rushed during the meal put a dampener on things with only around 15mins to eat from the ‘all you can eat’ buffet.
Gift shop is a little disappointing with better Lord of the Rings and Hobbit themed items available at other venues
C.
Where do I start... For fans of the film's or just anyone interested in movie making magic in general this is definitely worth a visit. I have heard in the past some people complaining about the price but for $90 we got an absolutely fantastic tour. Our tour was lead by Shane a friendly and well informed guide who was familiar with all of the different operations of the farm, which was great for people interested in the small details of the location of which there are many.
The weather had us hidden under our big green umbrellas most of the time "which they provided as part of the package" but in our opinion it added greatly to the overall vibe of the Shire and made it even nicer when you got to the Green Dragon at the end with wood fireplaces to warm you back up. The tavern itself was an extremely well decorated place to wander through while enjoying a locally brewed beer which our guide had a hand in helping to create.
Overall a great experience and I can't recommend it enough to anyone interested!
G.
Hobbiton Village is so well done that it feels like there are real people living there and you as tourist is allowed to walk through their village while they are away. I was a bit disappointed that one couldn’t enter one of the hobbit holes. The ale or cider at the end of the tour was great. All Lord of the Ring lovers should go. The tour is well organised with cool information for movie geeks given on the tour. You cannot go there unless you are part of a tour. The detail of the set is stunning and the amount of work that went into making it is beyond belief.
T.
I want expecting much to be honest but it was a fantastic experience. The whole place is really well done and the tour (And guide) was a great experience. Really glad we went.
If you like stout, the one they serve at the Green Dragon is only available there!
B.
Fantastic visit. As big fans, we really enjoyed the whole experience. Definitely glad we made the trip.
F.
The mystery of LOTR comes to life at Hobbiton. If you are a fan or not this place is highly recommended. It is such a beautiful little town and a great experience.
T.
It was a very fun experience to be able to view the behind the scenes of Lord of The rings the movie. The tour guide was very engaging and I the view were mesmerizing. Love it.
R.
Well Over priced in my opinion. Self guided would be better I think. The set is amazing but I felt the tour was a bit rushed. Tour was meant to be 2 and a half hours. My tour was 1 and a half and felt needlessly rushed.
K.
I cannot rave about this enough! Sunny was our tour guide and was absolutely exquisite! Photos do not do the Shire justice. We truly felt immersed in the world of Middle Earth. The food was delicious. I literally cried of happiness. Just wish the gift shop had more, surprisingly.
K.
A must do and must see movie set if you are a fan of Lord of the Rings or The Hobbit Trilogy. Even people has not seen any of those movies has visited the movie set. Fully guided tour with knowledgeable tour guides. Plenty of car parking and cafe plus souvenirs shop for extra shopping or grab something to eat. There's a case at the movie set as well. Toilets available.
H.
Amazing day. The tour guide was really nice, funny and answered all our questions. The hobbit on village is huge and you can take heaps of photos even inside one of the doors and the complementary drink at the end was great
G.
If you are a fan of The Hobbit by J R R Tolkien then if on a trip to the North Island New Zealand head off to Matamata the home of the Hobbiton, the sets made by Peter Jackson in the countryside is a beautiful place to visit and of course so true the films. As you walk around you are transpired to Middle Earth and all that took place in the Shire. A remarkable place well maintained with the small homes of the Hobbits displayed everywhere you look. Don't forget the gift shop on your way out and ensure you have a 📸 with you.
S.
Peaceful place. Nice weather and the guide was great! Thank you for the detail information. Also you can have free drink service after the tour. Highly recommend the black beer. ❤
G.
Nice time. Felt a bit rushed. It should be 2.5hrs instead of 2 hrs. All of our group was commenting how we didn’t have enough time to stop, take pics and properly appreciate each area. People have travelled from all over the world to see this place so they need it to be a good half day there to take it all in. More shire music would be nice to be heard. The tour guides were good but wouldn’t it be better if the guides were all playing hobbit characters to help us get more immersed in the experience? They don’t have to be from the movie, just dressed and in character. Attention to detail was good. Each house had lots of little details that were nice. Chimneys had smoke and water wheel was working.
G.
SO worth the money!
Audrey, our tour guide was super and so friendly. Great facts about the farm and movies. Must go stop if you are in the area. Worth every penny!!
Even if you haven't seen the movies, this place is a slice of heaven on Earth.
A.
Amazing place, especially for those who like The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. You immediately want to watch the movies/read the books again. Definitely try the beef pie - it's DELICIOUS.
K.
Excellent. So glad we made the effort to visit. And impressed that a film set is maintained and adored for everyone. Even if you haven’t read the books or seen the films, you will appreciate the building, landscape and dedication of all. Totally enjoyable experience.
G.
Great! Totally worth it, and also surprised by the quality of the BLT I ordered, lots of bacon and the bread was toasted perfectly. Also staff were friendly, too.
D.
So much fun. I wish I had my kids. The connection makes the movies even more special. I can now watch and visualize where all the Hobbiton events happened.
A.
Any LOTR and The Hobbit fans must-do tourist attraction. The tour guides are very insightful and made the experience more enjoyable.
J.
Hobbitsesss!! I think the enthusiasm of my tour guide made this a great experience. I went on a rainy day unfortunately, and really recommend double checking the weather before planning a trip here. Still, it was a fun experience, and you get a beer at the end of the tour!
H.
Beautiful place you must come. Tour escort did a good job and make sure everyone has time to take photos
A.
OMG, it was awesome. We had the best time. Took far too many photos. Well worth the visit
P.
Very well organized as everything here in New Zealand! Even who have never seen the movies it’s is worthy
B.
Almost everything a Lord of The Rings fan could want. You get up close to Hobbiton, get to pose behind a Hobbit door and drink at the Green Dragon. It could be more through. The visitor centre is lacking and could go all in on the theme. The guide we had was fine but a little inappropriate at times with jokes that landed flat.
Just for fun it would have been great if visitors were able to try on some Hobbit costumes.
J.
Read The Hobbit over 40 years ago. Fantastic to come to Hobbiton and have it feel so real and be so very well done.
V.
Second breakfast tour. Smallish group with own guide. 9 am start so only people there. Fairly standard tour then a banquet style breakfast feast. Catered especially for dietary specifics. Allowed to load up and take food with you. The cider instead of the dark ale before breakfast may have been a better choice.
G.
This is a must see site in NZ, words alone cannot do it justice. Make the effort to visit, you won't be disappointed even if you have never read the books or seen the movies.
M.
Visiting Hobbiton was really fun... make sure to watch lord of the rings afterwards to notify all the buildings and things you‘ve seen at Hobbiton
P.
Overall a great experience. Dinner was a little overpriced for what they served. However there was a lot of food. Tour guides were wonderful and kept it really interesting. Especially the guy with a baby face. He gets 10/10 for proving a very entertaining commentry.
F.
Awesome place! Tour was a little too short for me..but overall great experience.
J.
Lots of fun, especially if you have seen the movies. The guide was fun and knowledgeable (Kane). Definitely worth going!
M.
Amazing place to visit if you are a Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit fan
H.
Amazing? You have to be quick taking photos as you have a set time. But the detail in the village was beautiful
S.
Just a wonderful tour and banquet. Luke and Jacob were awesome guides! Good times
R.
Really love the place, the guide all were very nice. You can't stop to take pictures
D.
Great experience and the CEO was our tour guide.
g.
An amazing family experience. We did the evening banquet tour with our 6 & 8 year old children and it couldn't be better.
A.
My dream has come true. I'm so happy and very satisfied. Thanks for the excellent customer service.
O.
Probably my favorite thing to do in New Zealand. It was so much fan. Even my wife loved it and she's not as crazy about the books or.movies as I am.
K.
It exceeded my expectations! Was lucky enough to have only 5 people on my mid-week end of the day (5pm) tour which made it that much better.
A.
Such an amazing experience! It's a beautiful village and the creators really thought things through regarding the facilities. Parts of it are accessible to people using wheelchairs. Well worth the money.
A.
Amazing place, and its just like the movie!
K.
Great tour guide and great setup for the Hobbit village
T.
An absolute must-do. Book weeks early. If you can't, call first thing in the morning to check for cancellations that day.
N.
What a wonderful and majestic place of nature, art, fandom and fantasy .. would love to return for more drinks at the bar!
N.
Such a cute vibe 😍 loved it to bits!
V.
MUST DO! If you are a fan of the LOTR you will absolutely love this place. If you are not, you will at least become curious about the movies in the end. It's a magical place and the free beer at the end is marvelous
S.
Such a great experience. Definitely a recommended place for Lord of the Rings and Hobbit fans.
A.
Best guide ever. Loved the tour. Worth every dollar paid
R.
Great experience! Shout out to our tour guide Ed who made our tour fantastic! 😊😊😊
L.
This place is so beautiful , the view is breathtaking and the tour is really enjoyable. Would totally go there again
M.
Well what can I say??it was dam awesum it waa way better than I expected!!😎😁🥰I could so live in a hobbit hole!!I'm so coming back again for another tour!!
R.
Yeah, sure it's a little cheesy. But it's one of those touristy things you have to do if you're in New Zealand and like the Lord of the Rings. Just do it, it's worth it.
M.
Beautiful place, excellent scenario. Courteous tour guides to take you around and explain each place. Very professionally run.
A.
Had an amazing function here. Truly unique, beautiful and interesting venue for a large corporate function.
P.
Loved it. So pretty. Great guides who expressed lots of passion for the stories and place. Even got to finish the tour with a cold drink in the local Hobbiton pub.
N.
The tour and lunch package was awesome and the food was fabulous good value for money
S.
Staff were outstanding Mike was our guide and he held up the bus for a couple of minutes as we got lost. Put right address but different location. It was a beautiful day not good for pictures but dry under foot. Mostly Australians on the tour good fun. The Red Dragon was very well presented as well as the whole movie set. You can take a camera or video as this makes the experience that much more interesting. Enjoy enjoy well done folks an enjoyable two hours.
s.
One of the most scenic man made place in NZ. fascinating. Creativity at its best.
P.
Amazing tour, guide was so helpful with questions, visited during covid so quiet amazing chance for photos without people in every frame, if your in nz and never been, go!! You won't regret it
W.
Awesome what a great display and the Green Dragon tavern amazing , our guide Mike was brilliant
L.
Was one of my favourite experience in New Zealand. Emily our tour guide was amazing! She was friendly candid and knowledgeable.
A.
What a amazing experience our guide Mike was amazing lovely food great friendly staff
The green dragon Inn is wonderful great ale 🍺 and pie 🥧
Well worth the visit
C.
Very well recreated, organized and detailed. Recommended if you are a fan of the trilogy
A.
Great time and tour guide were warm and knowledgeable.
R.
You just have to do it if you're visiting NZ. I'm not even a huge LotR fan, but it was pretty cool.
C.
A piece of movie history preserved. Very professionally run. Tour guides bring the movie sets alive with their commentary. Unrushed walking tour. Nice finish at the 'Green Dragon' tavern where you can have a complimentary drink inside and marvel at the attention to detail bringing alive this fantasy tale. A must see!
M.
What an amazing family adventure. Family of all ages really enjoyed this guided tour. Set in a very beautiful part of our country really rate everything this experience had to offer. So cool much more so than we anticipated. Shame toward the end we were rushed on a bit. Would have enjoyed more time. Awesome photos too.
R.
Absolutely magical, I was hesitant to go as it was a bit eye watering at $225 for our family of 4 but I have no regrets and was worth every cent. We got Sunny as a tour guide and he was brilliant. Fantastic sense of humour and full of knowledge. It's taken me years to go as just didn't think it was worth while but I was wrong and so glad I finally went. We took a picnic and had lunch under the trees by the car park before going in. They are well set up and everything ran so smoothly, stunning weather and not crowded with people so was perfect.
A.
This place is amazing if you're in New Zealand make the effort to go here!
C.
We loved it! The place is perfect. Sonny was our tour guide and he was brilliant. A must do if you are a fan.
A.
Loved the place. It was slightly hot but the tour provided umbrellas for shade. And ofcourse drinks at the end.
B.
The highlight of my trip to New Zealand. The attention to detail and expertise of the guide made it a fascinating tour.
T.
On the rails tourist experience, but still absolutely wonderful for those who are lotr fans. Worth a pricey tour ticket from auckland
G.
Really great place, it seems really alive. Alot of gardens and animals.
J.
A must stop for any tourist, international or domestic. Well worth the ticket and the visit!
J.
Had the best time! This is a must do and should be on everyone's list!
W.
Stunning place that impresses even with the effort taken to keep it looking natural. Well with a visit
F.
Awesome place, second time I've been. A must do for fans and travellers alike!
N.
First time I have hard time to find words that describe the wonderful and amazing experience I had with our great tour guide
C.
Well worth the tour. It is great they have kept it. And the pub there is INCREDIBLE. Best movie site pub i have ever seen. They said before covid 3500 people a day went through. It is wicked. Highly recommended
V.
Loved it! The movie set has been awesomely maintained over the years. The rolling hills and the hobbit holes/houses are quite a sight. Made me want to rewatch the movies (and I did).
I.
Excellent place to visit. Great location. Highly recommended
L.
Took the lunch tour. Highly recommend, food was delicious and abundant.Toue of setting for movie fun & informative for LOTR geeks.
M.
Amazing tour, love the fun facts behind the movie. Will go back for sure
J.
Amazing tour, great guide, thanks Russell! Much better than I'd anticipated. So much to see and take in. Lovely walk on a beaut day. Very well worth a visit to Hobbiton!
N.
A must visit for a TLOR fan. This village is so beautiful and well maintained
R.
Some great detail has gone in to this set. You unfortunately just get rushed around though.
P.
The set is well designed and maintained
A.
For $89 we did the movie tour 2 hours of interaction. The cottage gardens the simplicity . This tour was sooooooo much better than expected. Am so very lucky I xd it off my bucket list
M.
Great experience, a great worthwhile tour. 2 of our party of 4 had never read the book or seen the movies bit still thoroughly enjoyed the tour.
P.
It was an impromptu trip, weather wasn't that good but did it anyway, we got to the last leg and it started to rain, going down the track back to bus, it bucketed down so up to that point amazing!! 2hrs well spent. Thanks for your hospitality.
p.
Perfect in every way. Really enjoyed this place
H.
Wonderful. Not 5 stars because of crowded, too many people there now...
P.
A must visit for LOTR fans alike (and even non LOTR. If you are a harry potter fan - you should also check it out). I really enjoyed the tour - our tour guide - Sam was hilarious
The tour comes with a drink (an option for those who don't drink alcohol)
H.
Get transported into the world of Hobbits. Bonus point: Learn about lots of interesting facts about Lord of the rings trilogy. It is beautiful 😍, must visit even if you are not a Hobbit fan.
D.
As magical as we thought it would be. Such fantastic details, fun guides, and the Green Dragon Inn was perfect. We went in Summer peak time which meant the tour was a little bit rushed, esp the time spent for a drink and eat at the Inn. Eftpos broke down so have cash on hand in case.
C.
Our 9th visit each to Hobbitton and we did the 2nd breakfast tour... it was sooo good! The most relaxed tour I've been on here, no other groups just, 30 folk on our tour, you felt you had the place to yourselves... the guide Kevin, was really good and friendly (as is every guide we've had) and the food! Yum! And plenty of it, no one left hungry. Thx again for a lovely adventure... for our 10th visit we'll be booking the evening banquet tour!
j.
Amazing to visit , 2 hrs go really fast!
S.
Excellent tour! Well worth a visit!!
p.
Magical place and wonderful presentation by Jeff. I feel like a child in a fairytale. Enjoy the beer and the food at the Green Dragon, too.
V.
Absolute must visit place for everyone. Fascinating to see the attention to detail of Tolkien's world with Jackson's vision
d.
An absolute must visit place if you are lucky enough to go to NZ. The visit to the village was magical, a true representation of what you see in the films by Tolkien. I loved the Green Dragon pub, it was so true to life, an actual working pub like an old village pub in the UK, lovely food and beer, a real treat. Fantastic day out, well worth the entrance fee.
G.
Fantastic experience, worth every penny
S.
Great experience
W.
Amazing tour, sunny was our guide and he did a wonderful job of keeping everyone intrigued, even those who hadn't seen the movie were happy to be there
T.
We were very lucky with the weather and the small group. It helps if you are a fan of the book and the movies but you don't have to be to enjoy this tour.
J.
Iconic and very well run with passionate staff.
A bit of a tourist trap, but what do you expect? You go there because you like the films. In that respect, it doesn't disappoint.
Would recommend the lunch tour if you're booking well enough in advance.
Q.
It is a beautiful place. It was sunny and green and the tour guide was very engaging too.We enjoyed in a small group and had ample photo opportunities. You need to visit for yourself to witness the beauty first hand.
M.
Very nice experiences and great scenes to take picture
L.
One great tour! Not to be missed, even if you haven't heard about the Lord of the Rings or The Hobbit or read the books...which according to our guide are 40% of the visitors. The guides are thoroughly dedicated and proud of their work.
a.
A place that u can take nice pictures in any angle 😍
R.
Very cool place. Our guide was a bit average but on the whole an enjoyable couple of hours. The free drink at the green dragon pub was a nice touch.
M.
Very beautiful.maintain well.guiders are good.tour time is not enough.
S.
Great trip. Worth going even if you haven't seen the films!
T.
really enjoy the tour, the view is amazing!
F.
If you love LOTR and Hobbit trilogy, you must visit this place before you die
M.
Awesome set. The maintenance given to place is appreciated.
The tour guide for the day luke explained everything in detail. He was a great host.
M.
Awesome place with great staff. Gorgeous sunny day when I went which certainly helped. Oddly, my favorite part was sitting in the green dragon pub drinking an amber ale, eating a steak and ale pie. Good times.
O.
Perfect place to see how everything gets started
j.
If you're are a fan of Lord of the rings or not a fan still a great place to visit!
E.
Its such amazing place to visit, high recomanded.
T.
We've been there in November 2019. We took the evening banquet tour. Really recommend this experience as you're only with a limited amount of people (50 I think) on the set with 2 guides and of course the banquet itself! Book in advance as it tends to be full 3-5 months in advance.
P.
This was a truly magical place to visit. Even if you are not a fan of the Hobbit world there is more than enough you entertained. The attention to detail is so impressive. The guide that we had was so knowledgable. No questions failed to stump her. The way that the tour was set up was faultless. Also the free beer in the Green Dragon was to die for. Nothing bad to say about my time spent in Hobbiton.
K.
Oh this was an experience I'll never forget. So professional in presentation detail in the hobbit houses and knowledge of our tour guide. Loved every minute. We'll worth coming even after 20years when the movies were made. Had to watch the movies again after.
D.
My Family and I really loved our experience at the Hobbiton Village. We really loved the attention to fine detail on everything especially the Green Dragon Tavern. To finish there was mind blowing!! We really enjoyed our tour guide Josh, he did a great job! Well done to everyone that makes the place work. Gardeners need acknowledgment also, the grounds look just like the movies and more. I was really impressed!! Huge thank you to the family for offering such an awesome experience. New Zealand being our home makes us so honoured and proud to have such an amazing tourist attraction available xx
It was a great way to spend my Sons 18th birthday doing something we all could enjoy.
P.S That Ginger beer was on point 👌
L.
Had an amzing time, the area is truly beautiful and the hobbit holes are super creative. I felt as though i was in the movie.
Dan, our tour guide was amazing, funny and Irish(great combo)! If you happen to have him for your guided tour you are for sure in great hands.
S.
Wow!!! Way bigger than I would have thought. Spent hours walking around. I think our tour guide said it was 14 acres in total, which is huge for a movie set village. Drinks at the Green Dragon made the experience amazing. I absolutely loved it.
T.
Amazing experience for any fan of the Lord of the Rings or Hobbit movies/books. Well worth the entry fee for the experience of walking through The Shire. So secluded you'll think you're in the Shire for real, with amazing and friendly tour guides to show you the way.
T.
Great experience, i will have to watch the movies now!
S.
If you're a LOTR fan then you won't be disappointed visiting Hobbiton.
The tour guides are great and the flow of people wandering around is managed extremely well. You won't ever feel like it's too busy.
It's fairly expensive and you have to make sure you don't miss your allocated entry time for the village!
There aren't any hobbits to be found living here anymore. They are too famous now and have all moved to Hollywood.
T.
OMG I love this place so much. The grounds and gardens are beautiful, and the Hobbiton structures transport you right to The Shire. It is worth any amount of money to experience this. Best if you get an overcast day for photos, but a joy any time.
E.
This was a magical adventure and informative tour thanks to the oh-so-passionate legend of a tour guide: Edd. Despite some heavy rain we had a blast—they provide umbrellas and shelter when needed! A pint and a pork pie at the Green Dragon In at the end capped it all off beautifully.
K.
One of the most beautiful places I have visited. The color of the grass and the way it is maintained is amazing. Once we see the actual village we can understand why the movies look beautiful. It's a must visit if you are a Hobbit or the Lord of the Rings Fan.
D.
Great set and the gardeners deserve a lot of credit. Unfortunately the tour groups are large and the set is very busy. The final stop is the pub and we only had about 20 minutes to have a drink. These would have been a great place to stay for and hour or longer, have a bite to eat and another beer. Shame it felt very rushed and crowded.
A.
Hobbiton movie land had still manage by the best service
S.
Great experience. Guide was really helpful and tours are spaced well enough apart to not feel too crowded. Gardeners and landscapers have done really well to create such a colourful and mature landscape. Place is buzzing with animal activity. Great photo opportunities.
A.
I recommend spending more money for the night one. Honestly the tour was exactly 2hrs long, spending about 75 minutes in Hobbiton and it simply wasn't enough time if you're a fan of the movies or LotR. We wished we could have spent ALL DAY here. It really felt like we were part of the movies.
C.
We went on the 2 hour tour. Lovely scenery, even if your not a Hobbit movie fan you will enjoy it. Scones and ginger beer were great.
P.
I enjoyed the movies but am not a devotee of the Tolkein. Yet the trek through the movie village originally designed for the movies was delightful, even on a rainy day. The insights to the building and maintaining of the area, anecdotes of the filming and more, were fascinating. Our guide, Emily, was delightful and helpful. Now...I just need to go back and watch all those movies again!
R.
A must-visit destination for every LOTR & TH fans! 👌 The place has unique ambiance and beautiful scenery to enjoy and experience.
A tip: Try to visit with either the first or the last tour. The light then is fantastic! Best even, try the evening tour! I was not lucky enough to be able to do the evening one - no places left for the days of my spontaneous NZ visit. So, book way earlier and you'll enjoy a magical evening at Hobbiton!
The entire organisation is also top and the staff are pleasant and friendly people. Our guide Pete was awesome! Thank you Pete!
All in all, very much satisfied! I only wish they'd allow the visitors some more time. There's so much to see and experience - 2 hours are not enough. 'Cause, you see, it's not just about visiting and taking pictures. It's about living the fantasy!
W.
This is such a well organized venue and a lovely place to spend 2 hours. Our guide Josh was very knowledgeable about the area and was happy to take photos and answer our questions for the whole tour. This is definitely a place you should visit if you are in the area. However, it does get really busy at some times but I still rate this place 5 Stars.
C.
Amazing experience, very well organised, felt like we were in the movie!!
P.
I attended International Hobbit Day, needless to say it was a dream come true. The food was superb, the sights incredible, my tour guide was funny and approachable (Thanks Ollie!) And overall good vibes. Highly recommend.
G.
It really *was* Hobbiton! The tour was well planned so the various groups did not run into one another too much. On a hot sunny late afternoon it was just beautiful, particularly the many flower gardens. The walk was perfectly rounded out by a drink stop at The Green Dragon. Not cheap, but we all felt it was worth it.
M.
It is the film location of the two movies "The Hobbit" and "The Lord of the Rings".
c.
I was there nearly 5 years ago and it’s the best place ever and once COVID is over I look forward to travelling to NZ again 😊
A.
I went on International Hobbit Day and it was worth every penny. I had been dreaming of going since I was ten years old and first read The Hobbit and became a LotR fan, and the whole staff made this the most magical night ever. A truly beautiful place.
M.
Great tour and awesome village. 4 stars just because we thought it could be more interactive - some music or actors around the village to give life in the little village and you could be part of it. Other than that it’s a nice way to spend a couple of hours visiting the most famous village in the world :)
R.
Preserved movie site as a tourist spot.
M.
Such a beautiful set up so much to look at.
B.
An absolutely awesome experience, we did the evening banquet tour, the food was delicious and I guarantee you won't leave hungry. The tour guides were outstanding, very knowledgeable and friendly. Probably the best experience of all from our time in New Zealand,
J.
It's a bit expensive, 2 hour tour a bit short for taking nice pictures without stress. Nice beer in The Green Dragon included in price. During summer not as green and in the movies. Still worthy if you are a LOTR fan.
T.
Absolutely enjoyed my tour of the Hobbiton Village. Tour guide gave some fun facts and helped answer a number of questions that people had.
You don't access this area yourself, you get taken here on the tour bus from The Shire's Rest Cafe.
It tends to get very very hot on a scorching summer day and you wish there was some more shade and shelter from the sun. But then installing that would ruin the original look of the set so I understand the absence of them.
G.
Loved it.
A.
Walking in a fairy tale :) Sure, very many people, yet it's all right. Very helpful check-in staff - it was raining heavily when we came for our visit. The lady kindly checked the weather for us and moved our visit for the next day. It was so much better the next day.

Beautiful environs, but the tour is a little underwhelming... Feels like HouseHunters: Hobbit Edition, going from door to door, gets repetitive after a while without displaying other sets or props from the films. It's fine to do it once, but unless you're a LOTR fanatic you might be better just taking in the scenery elsewhere on the island.
J.
Was a little disappointed, although not a LOTR fan I thought the place was looking a little tired. The Hobbits needed to come back and tidy up the gardens they were quite untidy with weeds. Foxgloves had finished flowering and hand not been dead headed. A lick of paint would not have gone amiss. Seemed to be several gardening staff around doing nothing much in particular. For the entrance price this should have all been top notch
S.
Was expecting to be a tourist trap but the attention to detail is fantastic even with large crowds it was managed really well. Must see for Lord's of the Rings fans. Much more can be done to upgrade the waiting areas , no accommodation nearby
M.
Lunch was good quality, but the atmosphere of a mess tent didn't meet expectations. Still, the tour was awesome and a must for a lotr fan such as myself. Otherwise this would be a 3 to 4 star experience.
A.
One of the must see places when you are travelling in New Zealand.
Takes an entire day but it’s definitely worth it. It has movies , nature , fun. Pretty much something for everyone . Would definitely recommend it
R.
Excellent our guide Kevin allowed is to understand both past & current history of Hobbiton, ONLY downside, NO Hobbits, they were off site at Market Day 🤣🤣😂
P.
Tour buses transport you into Hobbiton. Great guide "Cam" that told us all about the movie set and tour. Great photo opportunities. Refreshing beverage (alcohol and non alcoholic) on offer at end of tour. Best to wear suitable walking footwear.
R.
This Hobbiton Movie set is fully controlled and maintained by the company. Anyone must booked the tour package to visit this place. A guide is alloted for each group who described each spot to understand easily. There is a house to take your snap in front of the main circular door. After the tour, a glass of complementary drink also available for each tourist in a beautiful location.
F.
Amazing time! Wish had longer tour for pictures.
X.
Free entry
T.
Nice to cross it of my bucket list, but the tour was probably one of the worst ones I've ever had. All the groups are over filled and without proper space in between so it's practically a line all the way through. The tour itself is not really a tour since they only mention a bit about the props and material used, and not really anything more thorough about the building process or anything else that could be an angle to actually make a fair guided tour. From what I experienced today, they might as well cut $50 of the fee and let me walk around alone in the area. Then I would have more freedom to avoid all the people that were taking selfies around me throughout the tour.
M.
Amazing must see. You have to go and experience Hobbiton. Perfect from start to finish. Our tour guide Marguerite was sensational. 15 out of 10

VISIT: end of February 2020
COMPANY: Auckland Scenic Tours
COMMUNCIATION WITH COMPANY: 5 stars
TOUR GUIDE/DRIVER: 5 stars
WORTHY OF VISITING: more than 5 stars
Hobbiton is heavily advertised and when I kept seeing it come up during my research, I thought, sure that looks pretty sweet. But, I was not prepared for how absolutely impressive this would be! From the pain-staking detail of each home, nook and cranny and the world-renowned gardens, this was another unforgettable tour that we did in New Zealand that I highly recommend people see. Words just can never do this place justice, please see my photos of this incredible place!
LORD OF THE RINGS: a high percentage of people that visit here are actually not even lord of the rings fans or never saw the movies and it still has that much awe and beauty
FOOD/SNACKS: our tour included a drink and there is a coffee shop and gift shop at the beginning of the tour
PHOTOS: be prepared to take photos the entire time and be ready for video and photos as you have to keep moving with your group
M.
Entry Tickets are a pricey. The area encompassing the set is considerably small as that of the whole property. Our tour guide Emily was very informative.
"Only the exteriors were shot in the movie so most of the set comprises of different sizes of hobbit holes which gets monotonous by the time tour nears the end". You do get great photos in front of these hobbit holes though.
Drinks offered are good. Kudos to the staff for maintaining the whole set.
We were running short of time and chose Hobbiton over the Tamaki Maori Village (recommend you go for the later if you end up in a similar situation). Overall experience was above average as I've seen better and bigger movie sets than this.
H.
100% recommend visiting this place. What a treat! A delight from start to finish. Yes the ticket price is quite high but you won't be disappointed 👍
J.
Beautiful gardens, the detail of the set is amazing. Our tour guide was great, very funny. Would definitely recommend.
G.
Nice place to catch up with friends. Good selection of eatery.
T.
An absolutely a must-do for every fan of Tolkien' fantasy world. Two hours guided tour will take you over 40 lovely holes spread on a cosy hilly land full of trees, little gardens, flowers, narrow paths,... The perception is very professional, quality and final feeling after the tours is happiness. A special place. And Sandy was an awesome guide.
c.
It is everything you hope that it would be and even a little more.
You struggle to remember some of the set at times, but the tour guide is very good and helping you remember.
Added bonus of a free beer in the Green Dragon at the end which was the perfect end to a fantastic tour.
V.
If you are a movie buff and if you have watched Lord of the rings and the Hobbit trilogies or are about to see it after all these years then this visit is a must. The photos or words cannot describe the effort of making this village or maintaining it all these years. I was stunned. You need a day to immerse in this and also travel time from Auckland. The guide and the staff seems real pros and got loads of information about the movies. Had a Ale from the famous pub and also looked at the tree and heard the story behind it above Bilbo's cottage.
T.
A great experience a.must see for LOTR fans
A.
It's picturesque but there were far too many people in various tours in Hobbiton. It felt like I would take a step, take a picture, shuffle along in line and repeat. It was also too rushed with no real time to stop and appreciate.
H.
I met some weird old guy asking me if I want to go on a adventure anyone know him?
R.
A must for all Tolkien fans.
Picturesque setting. You'll end up with dozens of photos of Hobbit holes!
You'll learn about the building of the whole set and other interesting facts.
A nice touch is that you get to enjoy a free drink in the Green Dragon pub at the end of the tour.
Not sure how suited it is for the very young and there are a lot of narrow, steep tracks so personally I'd say anyone with physical disabilities would struggle but after all it is a film set which is designed to be true to the stories.
It just makes you smile to be there....
J.
Fabulous tour! The Hobbit set was really cool. A must see for Hobbit LOTR fans. We did the lunch tour with a buffet. The food was very tasty.
E.
When you first get on the tour you arrive on a tour bus, usually I guess there is a video that explains what you are looking at, but when I went the video did not work so our excellent tour guide Corrie, explained the story of the coming of the place in a entertaining way, and was explained that way the whole time. The actual Hobbiton Village is so cool, the tour around it and the story of it is so beautiful, I wish I could live there. The village is exactly like in the movies, and have gardeners working to make it such a great place. As in the movies the path ways are more narrow and if kids like the run away from parents, this is certainly a place for them to do so, but there are a lot of stops and places for great photos, at the end at the pub everyone gets a complimentary drink for kids the only non-alcoholic drink is ginger beer -the best ginger beer I've ever had and thats coming from someone who doesnt like ginger beer- being here you will learn the secrets of the Hobbiton Village. In the end it comes down to being one of the coolest places in New Zealand and I give all my compliments, references, and referrals, and if you are in
Matamata go here!
P.
Just a magical place. So many sets and so much detail. What a day! Our guide was lovely too and so enthusiastic ( and can work a SLR so we can be in some of the photos). Alas camera issues so I can't post any pics atm.
S.
So , I can explain this amazing trip !! It was just awesome! It s authentic and it s better like that ! I recommend to you to take the bus and visit the place with the guide ! It s just in front of the tourists center downtown where there is the bus station ! You can buy a ticket in the morning for the afternoon but also for the next day ! It s my advice because , despite of the tien is small , the place is so so nice with an amazing italien restaurant and a big place where you can enjoy artisanal beers !
So the tour of Hobbits is almost three hours with a lot of explication! It starts on the bus with a very friendly driver and the guide who they are really funny ! You also have the video of the “making of” of the movies !! So it s very interesting!! Did you know that almost all characters came from the neighborhood and the directors of the casting says “ they are exactly the same in a real life : small , very kind, generous, friendly and happy 😃 “
After the bus , the real tour start : you follow the guide who explain to you everything you need ! I appreciate a lot the good vibes and the passion she shared !
Lot of anecdotes, stories and interesting things are waiting for you !
After this time , you can enjoy for free some cider or organic beer in the famous bar of the village just in don’t of the cheminée , well seated on a couch with your friends !
After a while , time to take some last picture and jump on the bus !
And I can garantie, a day you will never forget!!
G.
Amazing to see what movie magic could do. Tour guide Jacob was fun and knowledgeable.
M.
Beautiful place. Too many people on my tour, other tourists not respectful, going ahead of other people to take photos. Tour guide gave good information, but lacks leadership. I consider quite expensive to what I got.
C.
An excellent tour guide brought everyone on to the same page (LOTR officianardos as well as those who maybe watched the films once). The attention to detail around the village of Hobbiton I'd fantastic. A thoroughly enjoyable trip. We are so glad we came.
D.
Beatifull 😘
J.
The little people from Ireland enjoyed visiting the homes of the little people on Hobbiton
S.
Place not to miss!
H.
The best experience I have ever done in NZ, Its magical and well worth the money.

There is so much joy!

One Of Amazing Village In The World Love It 😍🌟
l.
Absolutely awesome! The grounds are immaculate. Really magical place. Our guide Cam, was awesome and gave us a lot of fun facts during the tour.
J.
It's Hobbiton, of course it's great. Our guide Dominic was really clear in orating the history and stories of the movie set. I recommend the ploughman's sandwich and amber ale at the Green dragon Inn.
A.
Cute hobbit village with pretty, well tended gardens. Free drink at the Green Dragon to end the tour was a nice touch!
A.
Beautiful place and great experience. The tour guide was exceptional. Although it's on the expensive ride, well worth visiting once to experience the place. It was disputing
Disappointing that only exterior is on display though.
D.
I still enjoyed the set.. its a must visit.. if your not a fan of the movie ...you can atleast enjoy the ginger ale. FRIENDLY host.
T.
Absolutely awesome .your guide was just amazing and so funny
C.
If you are in New Zealand, this is a must. If you aren't a Lord of the Rings fan, the drive alone to see the rolling hills with the sheep might be worth it alone. Buy tickets ahead of time online. Also the food and drinks at the cafe is super reasonable for a tourist location.
C.
It is a very lovely, beautiful and interesting place with lovely guides
W.
Very good guided tour, Kelly was brilliant very informative about all the set and let us take plenty of photos. At important places offered to take photos of us as well, very well run and smooth tour.well worth visiting. Brilliant
J.
We visited the village right when the sun was low in the sky and facing us for most of the tour which made taking photos a bit tricky and viewing with hands above your eyes trying to block out the sun. So viewing close to dusk is not recommended. I still enjoyed Hobbiton and is a fantasy place but real. 50 to 60 staff maintain the village giving it its close to nature, natural look and feel. Fantastic planting and variety of flowers, bushes, trees and we'll designed layout. Easy to see why this a popular tourist attraction. Plenty of photo opportunities. We had Gandalf greet us (8ft) at the end of the tour. They ran out of Hobbit ears at their souvenir shop!
s.
An absolute must if you're visiting the North Island. With these kind of things you tend to hope that you're not expecting too much and on this occasion I wasn't. An amazing place and a real treat for LOTR fans
M.
Touristy? Sure. Should you miss it? Nope. A must see for anyone who's every enjoyed the books or movies.
B.
Worth every penny! Most things like this could be tourist traps but this is absolutely unreal if you've watched the movies. So well done!
J.
Whether you have seen the movie or not.... Read the book or not, doesn't matter..... You will still enjoy it... For ppl all age group.... Must have Ginger Beer at Green Dragon restaurant. Hobbit holes available for private parties as well at an extra cost.
B.
We planned on going this weekend and found out the Summer Harvest Festival was the same weekend. We decided against it as we were pressed for time between hiking Mount Taranaki & the Tongariro Crossing. Also the price felt a bit steep. We decided on the regular tour and can say it was such an awesome experience! I would definitely suggest doing one of the events they offer if given a chance to get an even better experience if you're a LotR fan! Our tour guide was knowledgeable while providing comedy at the same time! If you think its pricey...it's worth it! 10/10 would do again if I had someone that hasn't been on the tour yet
T.
Very nice place and very touristic too. If you are a fan of LOTR then a would definitely recommend.
A bit pricey but I guess it’s worth it 👍
A.
Hobbiton Village
$79/people
A.
If your a fan, which I am, it's awesome. The downfall is they rush you through (wish there eased more time to frolic) and the groups are too close together. Other than that, loved it. BIG SHOT OUT TO ARTHUR OR DRIVER FOR ACCOMMODATING US.
K.
Charming as ever. Worth a visit. I've done the afternoon tour and evening tour with banquet and recommend both. Note for those with mobility issues that some parts can be steep.
A.
Exceptionally crafted.
Ice cold ale reward.
Too many people at a time.
E.
A beautiful and cozy place where you'll get a tour of the movie set and the possibility to have dinner and grab a beer at The Green Dragon. I recommend a visit, especially if you are a fan of Tolkiens The Hobbit and LOTR!
B.
Stunning. Well worth it
T.
Part of the hobbiton movie set your, try the pie they are amazing and go really well with your free beer. If you time it right you can get some really nice photos without too many tourists in them
s.
Awesome, didn't think I would enjoy it, the wife was real keen to go. A real credit to all those people involved in buiding the village and now maintaining it. The guide and driver where real knowledgable and helped make the tour.
K.
Sonny and Luke were amazing guides and hosts! The chef catered to dietary restrictions with no problems (gluten and dairy free). For the first time l could eat pretty much everything on the table.
R.
The place is really beautiful and the tour guide was awesome!
K.
Haven't even seen any of the movies (LOTR nor The Hobbit), but it was such a great place to visit. So easy to appreciate the detail and art in Hobbiton.
D.
The set is very magical. It's like reliving the events in the movie when you encounter certain scenes. The team did in amazing job in maintaining the magic of the series.
S.
An amazing place for any LOTR/TH fans out there! Plus you get to chill at the Green Dragon after a walk around the Shire for a drink! The cherry on top (for me atleast) was having a guide who's pretty fangirl-ing while bringing us around
C.
Awesome giant set. It really feels like being on the movies! A bit short time in the green dragon (15min...) so they could let us stay a bit longer, but the set is incredible!
R.
Loved the place and exploring the set.
Tour was a little rushed we felt.
Super impressed by how incredibly detailed this set has been made - top notch
J.
Just awesome. Great guide Josh.
H.
Great day out, Sonnet the tour guide had a great energy. All the staff were really knowledgeable, if you like the movies it's a must.
K.
When I first watched the films, I assumed that Hobbiton was clever CGI. It was only after visiting that I realised it was really created for the movies. Amazing.
The tour, including lunch was very well organised and the tour guide Corrie was very friendly and helpful. A drink in The Green Dragon to finish off. Perfect.
m.
awesome place... love it...
G.
This is a great time to visit a NZ iconic destination. Really amazed at the creativity and attention to detail. Fabulous!
C.
Wow, this place is amazing. We had a super friendly bus driver and a wonderful tour guide.
C.
A must see place for any fans of LOTR! We opted for the buffet lunch afterwards which was nice. Lots of choice. Also got a free cider included from the Green Dragon.
A.
Really beautiful. Every hobbit home has a garden.
E.
This imagine hope i will visit again
C.
It’s a beautiful place.

Best time ever! You won’t be disappointed!!

How can anybody not give a 5 star!
🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
C.
Absolute pleasure seeing this shire.😉 So glad we did it today, with Bush and Beach tours. We had a sumptuous lunch and a lager too, just like the Hobbits 😁
O.
Absolutely amazing! The only thing missing, unfortunately, are the hobbits;) but otherwise it is living and authentic, as warm as in the movies, even when sudden rainfall catches you in front of the Bag End, like our group today :)
C.
Loved this! Only seen Lord of the Rings movies years ago..over half the people on tour not seen any of the movies, so do not need to have watched movies to enjoy.
J.
Amazing views, very good staff with great explanations. Many photo opportunities were given and provided great photos. I would definitely come again to see the views in the future.
A.
This was best thing we did over Easter weekend, my son was impressed by the visit and experience of Hobbits village
K.
Amazing place. So much to see, but sadly not enough time in a 2 hour tour, would be great to actually have a hobbit hole you can go into
J.
Fantastic place & staff. Thank you - please everyone visit to keep treasures like Hobbiton open.
D.

S.
Wow!!! Way bigger than I would have thought. Spent hours walking around. I think our tour guide said it was 14 acres in total, which is huge for a movie set village. Drinks at the Green Dragon made the experience amazing. I absolutely loved it.
K.
Loved it, a must see!

I'm a big fan of the lord of the rings, so if you're also a huge fan , I highly recommend the place .

Definitely a must see, LODR fan or not.

A great day out

The little people from Ireland enjoyed visiting the homes of the little people on Hobbiton
B.
Yes it’s expensive but it’s really worth it. The place is beautiful, the tour is well organised, our guide (Sandy) was very cheerful, entertaining and knowledgeable. Highly recommended.
J.
Beautiful experience.loved it.evening tour with food.amazing staff.must do at least oncee
J.
Had a lovely time at Hobbiton. The guide was full of information and super friendly.
K.
It wasn't my first time here and definitely not last.
If you're a LOTR and Hobbits fan, then you must visit!
P.
Too many tourists. Would be better if one of the hobbit homes was set up as the films so j could experience the inside instead of visiting Wellington studio where the filming was carried out
B.
It was amazing seeing the shire in real life. The work they did to create that place is amazing! Definitely put this on your bucket list
P.
Awesome, Breathtaking, great day out
L.
Great place for a team function! Sonny aka Ricky Baker is a wonderful guide and the 'Hobbit Feast' is incredible. Amazing hospitality.
S.
Three stars "only" because of the relatively low experience to price ratio. The Hobbiton Village in itself is well made, colorful and beautiful, but this is all an excellent business.
R.
Such a different concept to the usual tourist attractions. The staff are great and muffins are so good. A real family day out.
S.
A must if you are a JRRT fan
P.
Good tour guide. Picture wont comes out like the movie. If you are into lord of the ring it is worth the visit.
S.
The start area for the trip to the movie set. It is well organized and clean, with the usual NZ souvenir store selling souvenirs at a high profit margin.
D.
More fun than I expected. The beauty and detail of the work was impressive. The guiides have fairly large groups so those in back have trouble hearing the trivia that is shared.
G.
Fantastic! It is wonderful to experience scenes from the Lord of the Ring movies and to immerse yourself into the fantasy.
S.
If you are a fan great. If not, I imagine the rushed feel to it as the tour guide takes you from place to place within a set time and the volume of people will put you off.
j.
Great tour!!
H.
The best experience I have ever done in NZ, Its magical and well worth the money.
D.
After 10 yeas passing this place quite often we decided to go there after covid lock down. It was great. Enter a different world and forgett everything for a while.
S.
Loved it, loved it, loved it. Obviously depends what you like but we aren't even huge fans and this was an awesome adventure, will be going back for the banquet.
D.
great family outing, a little rushed due to the amount of visitors but a good way to spend two hrs (ps make sure you have seen the movies) :)
m.
Great time around the place. Very friendly staff and professional
J.
This is a MUST GO TO PLACE if you travel to New Zealand. Worth the $80 NZ dollars ($50 US). The scenery was magical and nothing like this place.
B.
Excellent tour, wether you are a Lord of the Rings or Hobbit movies fan or not. You will like it guaranteed.
M.
Well worth doing beautiful place
A.
The air is so pure and fresh. The Alexandar form is placed on 12000 hectors and it is so pretty across the whole breadth and width. It is a must go place for your bucket list.
Y.
A must see place even if you are not a fan.
Beautiful reconstruction of the movie set.
O.
Omg... Really magical and totally blew my mind.. This place is sooo beautiful.. The butterflies the bees, the flowers, all the fruits.. Felt like you really stepped into the shire! ❤️❤️❤️
J.
Very enjoyable! Staff were great! The food and tour were very nice. End of tour beverage is perfect after a hot tour!
W.
If you have seen the movie it's a must, I bring many people there and they love it, a must visit and bring your kids, remember, the little hobbits won the battle!!!!
J.
Really beautiful. I haven't even seen The Hobbit, but I loved this place! Similar to Harry Potter world at Universal.
M.
v v v v v good and realistic. only thing better would be it people lived there lol. we went first thing in the morning and there weren't too many people. this seems to be one of the major complaints from people so maybe a good idea. these people obviously haven't been to disney land though lol.
s.
Would 100% recommend. Amazing place to visit and the staff are fantastic and so enthusiastic! Such a magical experience
D.
Awesome place ! Landscape wonderful, clean, well conserved and a free drink at the end of the tour in the Green Dragon !
A must do in NZ
