Reviews of Ngarua Caves

Dog friendly! Probably one of the best attractions around. Family engaging and full of interesting facts. Great service, we brought our dog on the tour with us. The team offered to look after our dog also. Amazing people! Coffee and ice blocks available for purchase. Was a hit with the little ones.

Interest place. Very good and clean facilities. Easy walk. The tour takes about 45 min. Run every 1 hour, starting at 10am. The guider is amazing! Kids friendly. Really nice plan to do in a rainy day. Cold inside, bring jackets.
B.
Awesome tour conducted by an amazing guide.
Overall it makes a wonderful family experience that is in fact a lot cheaper than I thought it would be.
This tour would supplement a walk to Harwoods Hole either before or after.
K.
$25 entry for adults, tours currently every 30mins over peak season. Amazing place with a neat little gift shop. Very nice surprise of a place 😊
S.
Excellent caves with cool guides. Def a family friendly experience. Awesome to see moa bones.
C.
Didn't even realize his was here, super glad we stopped at the lookout! Was a cool cave tour, super friendly staff :)

Ask for Amanda! She was supremely fun and knowledgeable, we had such a great time. Easy walk full of local heritage, Amanda made it informative and engaging.

My daughter and I found this tour absolutely fascinating, and it greatly exceeded our expectations. The cave and surrounding countryside is spectacular, the ginger crunch and coffee delicious, and Amanda was a really informative guide! I highly recommend it.
A.
Pretty cool little cave vist. Reasonably short but quite impressive
M.
Great find at the top of Takaka hill. Constantly 11 degrees inside so dress warm. Amazing caves and history. Very friendly guide and staff.

Anyone visiting the area should make a point of visiting this cave. Stunning and reasonably priced when you consider what you see and learn thanks to the friendly, knowledgeable staff. Better with fewer people I imagine. So glad we went.
B.
A great experience! our guide gave us a wonderful tour with lots of information on the history of the cave system. The cave is approximately 300m long and big on the inside. You will not be claustrophobic at all. it is an easy walk in and around the cave and the exit is via a ladder. Good for kids. Cafe on site with lots of parking.

We loved this experience and recommend it heartily. The guide (sorry I don't recall the name) was a super lovely and very knowledgeable Canadian from Halifax. An easy 45 minute wander through mind blowing caves formed 100 million years ago. Checking out Moa bones and seeing a part of Aotearoa NZ from the inside. A truly memorable experience and not at all commercial and not at all expensive either! Go do it.

Amazing experience, such incredible caverns to be able to explore. But the best part was our guide Amanda who was such a delight, able to offer both knowledgeful information about the cavern and giggles along the way. Also, endless patience for the husband taking photos along the way. She also gave us advice on our next adventure, including parts that are Tapu. Thanks Amanda!

Had a great time. Guide and all other employees were very friendly
Have clean bathrooms, good variety of gifts and snacks, and even toys for the kids when waiting for the next tour. Pleasant casual eating/waiting room with tables and chairs.
The surrounds are beautiful with very interesting rocks.
The cave had very interesting natural history and geology, with good information from the guides.
Worth the quick stop and tour.

Really worthwhile. Excellent guide & reasonably priced.

The cave is interesting to see. It's drier than other caves I've been in perhaps because it is so much higher than sea level. The staff were very friendly, and the kids had great fun.

Great attraction with amazing history of the area. Cave tour is really surprising. And a must stop to understand the geological area and what the hill is made up of. You can see moa bones and hear the amazing sound of limestone. These limestone caves are very old. 25,000 -28,000 years. And with a helpful guide you can get to appreciate time and the wonder of how these dry caves form and grow.
They have a cafe there and a souvenir shop.
Well worth a shop in and cave tour.

A wonderful experience. Good access and well light pathway enabling you to view these amazing caves. Pleasant Guide. Very knowledgeable and interesting. He communicated facts clearly.

We visited With family’s and it is a nice place. It’s a 40 to 50 mins to drive from Takaka depending on traffic.
The caves have an interesting history and the guide does do a good job.
Unfortunately it costs 25$ per person / 10$ per child above 4yrs. The total trip is maximum about 30 to 40 mins depending on how big the group is. And total length of the cave is about 300 meters. Took usb30 mins with a grp of 20 approx
It’s something to visit but there r are a lot of free activities to do at Takaka and if you are time pressed then skip this.

$25 for an adult and actually really good. Takes about 45 minutes to walk through the caves and you enter at one entrance and pop out another 10 minutes away. Interesting history covering moa bones, large long winged birds. Nice views from the place on a clear day. Just don't walk around the around off road due to the massive holes and drops in the ground.

Wow what an amazing experience! And great for kids as well. The owner and tour guide was so nice! Highly recommend

Absolutely beautiful place. Already an awesome view when driving down there. Nice cafe with good coffee and great service. Tour guide was really passionate and was very knowledgeable. Caves inside absolutely stunning, did not expect it to be this great. They had lights in there so you could see and also takes pictures. We came down there again on our way back. We stoped there cause the road was blocked due to construction and we had to wait a couple of hours. Just as we were standing there thinking what to do, the gate was opened. The lady said that they were normally closed but because of the road work they were open so people could at least get a cup of coffee. The lady recognized us from a couple of days ago. We were thankful and off course we came down for a snack and cup of coffee. There were not that many people but I think it was really special that they still opened it up, you guys have a good heart!

Awesome place for travelers, good and friendly staff. A lot to know about the caves, the guide had a lot of knowledge and enthusiasm. It cost us $20 per person, but totally worth it. They provide helmet and jacket for the health and safety....4.5/5
B.
Really beautiful cave system with a well laid out track. The steps and signage were good and although you are not allowed to touch the structures (as is in most tour caves) every so often a 'touch spot' is set up with a designated area to feel the formations. The tour business is family owned and the guides stop the tour every now and then and give a great detailed explanation of the features inside the cave. Nice cafe included in the main building.
M.
Great kiwi guide today, super knowledgeable especially with the star wars light saber.😂 Thoroughly recommend, easy walk through with our 3.5 year old daughter and MIL who has knee issues. Stunning views from the top of hill at the end of the cave walk
L.
I spent an amazing time here and I have learnt so many things! OP was an amazing guide :D
Only 4 stars because the tour was ruined by kids... they were making a lot of noise and we missed half of the small stories and explanations. it would be great to do specific tours for families.
A.
We loved our vsit to the Ngarua Caves. The tours at at set times, so when we arrived we had time for a wander around the shop and a cup of coffee.
The guide was very knowlegeable and the caves were interesting.
Not suitable for people with limited mobility as there are lots of steps and a ladder to get out at the end!
The views were great from the hill and we saw lots of Weka Birds as well!
We visited in November, so didn't need to book in advance.
M.
Excellent cave tour that would suit all ages. You do have to climb a short ladder at the end to exit the caves. The caves contain some stunning formations and you are allowed to take photos.
G.
We had a blast at the caves..it was very hands on and we learned alot about the water running through the caves going down to the resergences point down the mountain. It was about $20 each to visit but we had fun. We had a private tour because of our visit late in the season :)
P.
Amazing spot to visit to see an awe-inspiring cave network and also to take in the superb views of the Nelson Bay's area below. Our guide was an absolute legend and very knowledgeable. Recommend packing a picnic to enjoy at the spot afterwards as the view is just so good
W.
Allow 1 hour tours around 45 min. Start on the hour. $$ well spent. There is a ladder to climb and caution the slippery stairs.
R.
The kids loved it. The caves are beautifully preserved and the tour guide was very good.
A.
One of the highlights of the trip well worth a look as it's a easy walk and enjoyable walk for the whole family
B.
Great tour in the caves. Takes 45 minutes and get really nice impressions. Also good tour guides which explains a lot. Great experience.
D.
Really interesting caves to walk through, there is a little cafe before and after to get a snacks, drinks or coffee and something to eat if you need.
The guide we had was really nice and had alot of knowledge of the caved which made the tour worth doing.
The cafe has toilets and a nice shaded area to relax
A.
Great tour, only takes one hour
Suitable for children, you do need to climb up a ladder at the end to get out.
Not really commercialized which is nice
G.
Well worth the visit! Gorgeous scenery on the road up and the caves were stunning. Our tour guide was Dave, he was really funny and had great knowledge about the cave. He also took a some pictures for us too which was handy. Really enjoyed our visit and would definitely recommend it if you're headed this way.
C.
Interesting experience, don't have to book online, tours leave every hour, takes about 30 minutes to go thru. Great for kids.
