Reviews of Faraday Museum of Technology
F.
Excellent Museum, you could play with old dial phone, vacuum transport token, spring transport token system. You could touch and play with the display item.
Don't miss the life experience of Nikola Tesla's Tesla Coil. It's amazing.
A nice place to spend 2-3 hours.
The Museum is running by a group of volunteers, no support from Council or government.
P.
A very interactive little museum made for all ages. You can touch and play with a lot of the artefacts on display. Plenty of vintage gear like dial up phones, a working Tesla coil, pinball machine amongst other small things. Not as big as motat but for the price you could easily spend a good 45 mins there.
A.
Highly recommended! A great treat for the family. This is a HANDS ON museum which makes it pure joy for kids of all ages. This is small but the staff engagement and ability to touch things makes it the best old fashioned musseum I've seen in New Zealand, far better than the similar old fashion area at Auckland 's MOTAT. It is very economic for a family of 5 and you could easily spend half a day here. My 3 children are aged 6 to 11 and all loved it (this rarely happens as there is always 1 that disagrees). They had a tesla coil, the tardis, engines, old vehicles (that you can sit on), old wood work tools, musical instruments, old communication boards, traffic light systems, old shops, toys, and so much more. A must see for the family in napier!
M.
This is a favourite place to take the kids. We live in Hawkes Bay and go a lot but still never gets boring. The volunteers are always so helpful and knowledgeable. We love that the kids get to touch mostly everything. The Tesla coil is also a fun thing to watch if you are lucky enough to be there when they start it up.
S.
What a awesome place to spend a couple hours. Great for a rainy day activity with the kids. Fun for all ages.
w.
This is the best museum I have been to you can interact with almost everything there making it so much more interesting. Took 6 kids 5 to 11 and they all had such a great time - so did the adults!
J.
The kids loved it! Super interactive & some great little pieces of history.
S.
Awesome place for all ages VERY hands on, look back in time and immerse your self in the experience. When they are open the tesla coil display is at 11.30am. The staff are very helpful and knowledgeable and so welcoming. Thank you for a very awesome learning experience 😀 👍 well done team
B.
Such a great experience, highly recommend! We went with our two kids today and there was so such to entertain us all. Very reasonable pricing too which was a bonus. Loved it :)
D.
Can't rate this museum highly enough. We were incredibly impressed by the huge variety of technology and interactive equipment the children could engage with. The tesslar machine is a hit. The information and history was great. The volunteers there were outstanding and so lovely and informative. We spent a good two hours there and had to drag the kids out they enjoyed it so much. Such a centre to be proud of in Napier!
C.
So delighted to have found faraday science centre ..well done to all these amazing folks that have created this very special fun & learning centre ..
J.
Such a cool interactive place. The kids (girls, 9 & 12) didn't want to go here but i made them. They loved it, didn't want to leave. Easily spent 3 hours here. The best museum in HB.
Definitely worth a look.
G.
Great hands on experience for the kids. Friendly staff and volunteers made for very welcoming experience. I especially liked how the lady at the front desk made a point of telling the kids they were supposed to touch everything.
j.
Amazing objects of our past. Great seeing where things started that we have today and how things have changed. Kids and adults had a blast
J.
An unexpected delight, full to the brim with old technology, with most of it set up to use and learn how it works. From a bellow pump keyboard to various phones to electricity generators to shoe cobbling gear, there are several visits with of exploration to be had. Oh, and don't miss the Tesla coil demonstrations!
T.
It is hands on museum for younger and older. Spent there around 2hours.
E.
A lot smaller than what we imagined, but still interesting place.
We had more fun than our 4 year old son.
Definitely good for family trip, but was difficult to spend more than 2 hours due to the size of it.
E.
Awesome staff..
Perfect family activity.
Make sure to watch the show on Tesla..
A.
Great place for kids and adults alike. Very interactive as kids are able to use most things
S.
The cool thing about the Faraday Centre is this is a highly interactive, collections-based museum devoted to the history of technology, machinery, gizmos and gadgets from all over Hawkes Bay and beyond. You can step into a Tardis, or watch a Tesla Coil light up, play vintage arcade games or ring your mum from a phone box. But to be honest there’s way too many awesome exhibits to list here, so I suggest you grab the family and go check it out yourself.
P.
A fun mix of historic/scientific equipment and interactive activities for big and smaller kids
C.
So many interesting items displayed in a relatively small space. Super place to take your kids
K.
Great place for young and old. Volunteers are knowledgeable.
Everyone should visit.
j.
Wow what a great place to take children but also enjoyable for adults. A hands on museum where you can explore and step back in time. We especially enjoyed the old telephones because you could ring each other. The static electricity display was very thrilling. We just happened to get a big electrical storm in Napier when we got home so the children could relate to the electrical strikes from there experience at the Faraday Centre. The Infinity mirrors were fun. Loads of old style technology to experience. Very well displayed and information provided. Child entry only $4. Great value.
N.
This place is awesome. Soooo many cool old things there to look at & interact with. Would definitely suggest giving yourself at least 2-3hours to be able to enjoy everything at a nice pace. Soooo much fun, I actually need to go back as we did not give ourselves enough time 🤣
D.
Fantastic, nothing less than fantastic, especially for kids. Everything is hands on and the educative entertainment factor is high.
M.
Interesting and interactive place. Good for kids to get touching things from the past
R.
This working exhibit museum of yesteryear technologies is a credit to Napier City - outside MOTAT in Auckland and Tawhiti in Hawera there is really nothing like this in the North Island that I know of for families - it fills a gap that I think TePapa in Wellington seems to have lost in its quest to fill a more sophisticated interactive & exhibition market or the Musuem of Wellington (formally known as the Maritime Museum) where a few yesteryear exhibits are displayed. Entry price pretty reasonable and parking on surrounding streets fairly good. A few exhibits found to be broken and in need of repair. Piano upstairs a big hit with the family as were the various working pumps, morse key set etc. A 2 hour visit to comfortably get around all the exhibits. Would be good to have a section developed into a yesteryear movie room to showcase Napier over the years - am sure there is some excellent footage that can be run from time to time. Overall a big thumbs up for a great 2 hour outing with the family whilst in Napier.
S.
Amazing place. Good for kids to see how the older machines worked
M.
This was an awesome place. It exceeded my expectations, especially how much my kids were engaged in everything. I had thought the adults would get the most out of this trip but my kids (6,7,8) were not at all bored. So interactive and well worth a visit.
J.
What an awesome place to visit, our family spent about 2 hours wandering around, kids absolutely.loved it and it bought back so many memories for the adults.
Well worth the cheap entry fee, this place totally needs to be seen to believe.
Going to take the kids back again, will probably buy the yearly pass so we can go whenever we want.
100% recommend this most excellent place
I.
Great place for kids and adults to learn of technology and machines from past era's.

D.
Great piece of New Zealand history. Very interactive for children.
B.
This place is amazing! You can play with most things in here including old arcade games, a manual telephone exchange, a robot and all sorts of other stuff. We spent a couple of hours here and our boys (6 & 10yrs) could easily have spent longer.
l.
Such a great rainy day visit, loved that I could take my 12 year old and 19 month old and they both had a fantastic time. Lovely workers too
B.
Very educational, fun experience, kids can touch what they want except for a few things that have notices stating otherwise.
S.
Very interesting, quite interactive, but could be better organized
D.
The most amazing place, you can touch all of the exhibits as that's the point of learning about technology from days gone by, The best museum we have ever visited 😁
s.
I will recommend this museum to everyone, children will love it too. So much to see and do. Experiment's, gadget's and machines which will amaze you. Give it a go. You will enjoy.

Excellent museum. Much better than I was expecting, even my wife enjoyed it. Well set up with very friendly, knowledge and passionate staff. If I'm Napier well worth the visit and the $9 admission.

Great place for kids as a rainy day activity. So many hands on displays. They can learn a lot about what people used to use in their homes many years ago in terms of technology (old phones, dentistry, sewing machines).

J.
Great collection of working (and some not working) old technology. Really allows the younger generation to get a hands on feel on how life was without the modern technology assistance. Staff were lovely, answered questions and were happy to talk about some of the more unique items. Was a hot day so being in the shade was great.
k.
Great place for kids of all ages

S.
Loved it, as did my daughter (6). Great friendly staff.
H.
The Faraday Centre is like a hidden gem - great for an affordable, different, and inquisitive family outing. It also has some cute items in the gift section.
V.
It's a fun museum because visitors can interact with all the recent and not so recent technology. It's also fun for (older) kids. It must take a lot of effort by the volunteers to keep the exhibits in working order.
D.
Awesome place to take the kids and adult's, so much to see and do. The volunteer are super nice and helpful too.
S.
The faraday center is amazing!!! I was so excited to see historical display. The guides were passionate. I loved the entire place. It’s awesome place for elder because the displays reminds our childhood.
T.
It's a good hands on place for kids to look at and play with old this but calling it science and technology is stretching it a bit.

A fantastic collection of old Napier machinery and general exhibits, well worth a visit, allow plenty of time.
J.
This was really excellent.
They had countless exhibits dating back to the late 1890's right up to the late 1980's. Just about every exhibit had been restored to working condition and a number of the exhibits were interactive and you could operate them. They had stuff from the kitchen, the laundry, the office, from laboratories, old pianos, pianolas, radiograms, record players, as well as old cars and motorbikes, old farm equipment and old workshop equipment. It was quite nostalgic to see a lot of stuff that I saw and used growing up in the 1960's. All of the volunteers were extremely friendly and helpfull.
Extremely cheap entry at only $9 and worth every cent of the admission price.
D.
Such a fun place, great for all ages!
j.
It is very interactive and fun, having many exhibits about past inventions and innovations. There are concise instructions to explain how to use most of the interactive items, allowing one to learn how things were used in the past. Additionally, the principles behind each and every monumental invention is explained simply through pictures or short ELI5 (explain like I’m five) explanations.
g.
