Reviews of MTG Hawke's Bay
S.
Great exhibits and friendly staff!
Awesome place to spend some time.
d.
Interested in local historical information then this is the place and it's free. Lovely layout of art and artifacts from hawks Bay area arranged over 3 floors. Amazing silver collection is worth seeing. Staff are friendly and helpful
k.
A very pretty museum with some cool art
C.
Ignore any comments about it being boring or small. It's a lovely well curated gallery, brilliant but tragic exhibition about the earthquake and many other well thought out dispays too, well worth a look and very friendly staff.
D.
Friendly welcome, well set out galleries with an interesting variety of topics. Love the Country Women's Institute display.
D.
Stunning museum. Earthquake section downstairs very well done but could possibly be a wee bit more exciting to engage the kids. Maori exhibition is stunning maybe a little too sterile though. Meatworks exhibition very interesting also.
j.
Loved the experience. Tinge of sadness remembering the awesomely old cluttered version of the museum. Well worth a look whilst visiting Napier . Some wonderful exhibits inc the 1931 earthquake display .
A.
OKay place to visit, it's basement level, is all around Naiper earthquake, other than that It do not see much other display.
J.
Beautiful building, amazing exhibition re tupuna Maori, earthquake history fascinating but tragic. Beautiful silver display. Only criticism is sound annoying - intrusive.
A.
It was ok, I enjoyed the Ngati kahungunu exhibition and the earthquake but the other displays were a bit boring... Very clean and nicely set out though...
T.
Modern decor in this Museam. Doesn't take the experience away from Hawkesbay History. The displays are eloquently displayed. I enjoyed my experience go through this Museam. I'll go often.
G.
Really good. More for adults. Enjoyed it.
C.
Greeted by a knowledgeable and friendly employee of the museum who gave me directions around the place. As well as the incredible collection of art, both historic and relatively recent, the museum also has a very in depth and haunting exhibition regarding the earthquake, including filmed interviews with survivors. Loved what I thought was background classic music, only to discover a wonderful volunteer pianist playing live, upstairs. Great selection of items in the gift shop celebrating NZ and Maori culture. For a free museum, it's wonderful - I've been recommending it to people since I left.
A.
Beautiful building and interior. Well staffed which are well informed. Greet you at the entrance to tell you all about their exhibitions.
S.
Brilliant atmosphere for the Napier Art Deco weekend..lots to see and do
G.
Well worth a look at this place I spent at least an hour in here so my advice is check it out
C.
Always a great way to spend 40ish mins wondering around doing the scavenger hunt and its free!!
S.
Check out what events they have going on. I was lucky enough to join in on a weaving workshop. Really clean and helpful staff
C.
Great muesem lots of different tgings too look ar and learn. Would be great to have a few more interactive exhibits. But really enjoyed it. Modern place great staff.
S.
Staff are awesome and very polite. Great place to bring family and friends to explore and learn. The MTG is spread out across three levels and includes interactive exhibits. The treasure hunt sheets are always a hit with the kids, so is the creative space for the kids as well. You can easily lose track of time, lots of fun and learning for all ages
A.
It was a very wet lunchtime when we popped in here. We thought we'd spend an hour and then go and have lunch. However, it was nearly 3 hours later when we left. Thoroughly recommend the Napier Earthquake exhibition. We watched the Gaylene Preston movie (32 minutes) and found it very moving and inforrmative. Only did the museum but there's a theatre and library too in the same building.
J.
Great museum with a variety of displays over 4 floors. The earthquake exhibition in the basement is compelling, with a variety of photos, static displays and voice overs. Good first nation displays. The Attic has an odd collection of things that might have been found put away years ago.
V.
Fantastic local museum with a fantastic display about the Napier hastings earthquake
N.
Staff very friendly and welcoming. Helpful and friendly to children with activities available they could do around museum . Earthquake exhibition was well done, the visual presentation of survivor stories was very interesting and informative. Lovely gift shop . Beautiful and well maintained facility . Represents Napier tourism well .
S.
This place was suggested to us as a visit for some history on the Napier Earthquake. This was well with the visit to see some of the exhibits, photos and the stories told by some of the survivors.
T.
Free entrance, interesting earthquake floor. Interesting white European art with slightly racist (anticapitalist, anti-white) wall texts.
P.
Great museum particularly the Napier Earthquake display.
F.
Nice place to visit for people whom like museum & gallery. Location is great too
L.
Awesome,
C.
I found the museum very interesting. However, I didn't realize they had a interactive room set up for children. It made my nieces day. Have already recommended to my friends as it's a great way to spend a morning and it's free.
T.
Interesting little museum. The collections on display were different. Staff were very nice and had a secure bag drop off. Went to see the Earthquake Exhibition. Was mostly people/survivors personal stories rather than explaining events.
W.
Great little aquarium...staff are helpful and exhibits well done
X.
I was really surprised by this gem of a museum. The collection from the earthquake and how it changed the area with the testimonials was especially moving. Really gave you a sense of how devastating it was and how it changed life in an instant. Any way it was free entry and we found a reasonably priced koru statuette for my mom's mantle at the giftshop.
L.
This is a very interesting museum. It is also good for all ages, including keeping kids entertained, as kids can have a scavenger hunt looking for different items throughout the museum. If they find everything, they win a free badge of something New Zealand themed. There is different themes for each level. This museum was overall a really fun experience and great for all ages!
B.
This museum is well worth a visit for any Ange group. The staff were very helpful and pointed out a lot of activities for our children to do. We might go back the next time we're up
J.
It was so interesting place, get to know about Napier...
M.
This little museum has a story to tell about the 1931 earthquake, which it does very well. There is also an interesting Maori floor with some fine sculptures and a video of 2 local dances. The top floor history of the Webb family can be dipped into as you like and really brought the era alive. Well worth a visit.
D.
Liked this art gallery. Worth going along to.
P.
The display on the lower floor of the museum is both excellent and emotional and being a kiwi with recent memories of the Christchurch quakes, it made me only too aware of what the residents of Napier experienced nearly 100 years ago. A really good learning experience. We wandered into this museum for a quick browse
J.
Extremely impressed with the layout of this museum, very friendly and helpful staff at the front desk who explained were everything was, also gave my children school holiday activity sheet. So many interesting things to see, best of all it is FREE! I highly recommend checking this place out.
N.
Most of he displays are well presented and spaceously laid out in an appealing modern building. I found the lack of lighting made harder work for me to read and look at photos - no doubt done to minimise damage to items over time. I can understand what many have said before me that it's a fraction on display to that in storage as it has the feel of a smaller gallery rather than a city museum.
M.
Outstanding small museum looking at local history and Maori culture. Unfortunately the superb Co cert hall/cinema is much underused. Staff are excellent.
V.
Gallery/museum is very good....although in saying that I didn't get to see all of it this time around....but will finish next time we are here!!! Displays I enjoyed looking at pertained to the architects drawings for the rebuilding of the town of Napier after the great earthquake.......the town truly is a veritable store of Art Deco design !!!!
D.
Friendly and interesting place. I loved the architects’ drawings, of the Art Deco rebuild, in particular the AMP building and only wish we could have bought a copy. I made do with a nice book with a copy in it. Thank you and also you should install one of those donation tap points. Certainly many people from cruise ships would only have cards not cash.
D.
I love going to the MTG. There are always new exhibitions to enjoy, and goods to buy in the shop. Ive taken part in a MTG "behind the scenes" tour and their Old Napier Cemetery tour. Ive seen movies and have done family tree research in the library. There seems to be something for everyone. The staff are always friendly and helpful.
N.
Good for a free thing to do but overall would not be worth paying money for anyway. The war and earthquake exhibitions are very good and interesting but the rest are not so much. I say put more exhibitions of historical events in there and the museum would be much better.
C.
Great for a free museum. The little expositions are really interesting and the one about the earthquake is chockinly good.
Well located in town, near the water front. Also doubles as the library and has wifi all around the museum.
Nice gift shop. I removed a star because the staff at the entrance didn't welcome us or offered to explained to rooms or anything. They just kept talking to each other.
K.
Excellent display well worth the visit. The 1931 earthquake exhibition was absolutely brilliant. Highly recommend to all visiting in this area of NZ.
T.
Nice museum with cool scavenger hunt for kids. Gift shop. Craft room for kids. Portable chairs for tired legs. Will visit again. Free entry.
C.
Good museum with lots of local history as well as regularly changing exhibits. Cool renovated building, helpful staff, easy access. Make sure you check out the permanent exhibit on the 1931 Napier earthquake.
M.
Recently updated museum. Free entry. Worth a few hours.
B.
Very interesting. After enjoying a leisurely stroll along the parade and water front, it was a great way to finish the afternoon learning a little more about our NZ history and the distruction from the 1931 earth quake. Napier town was hardest hit and nearly totally destroyed. Quite devastating to see all the photos, yet quite amazing from out of the ruins to how it is today,
B.
Nice, but very small.
T.
Small but brilliant museum. The Maori & earthquake exhibits were unique for their local aspects, and there was a top quality one on ocean plastics too. A real gem.
K.
I had the privilege of going to the museum, seeing the history of napier really puts a smile toy face. This place is very organised and has a fun game for the kids to play all around as well as a game room along with a library.
A.
Only had time for the basement Earthquake Exhibit/memorial. Bit underwhelming, really.
Great little anecdotes, and memorabilia- but little on the way of factual formation.
Came away feeling empathy, but ill-informed.
D.
Loved the display of plastic into ocean stuff
D.
Wouldn't rush back
The Maori exhibits good
The welcome was shocking The guy at the desk was not interested in being there and should find another line of work.
J.
Great museum. Make sure not to just walk through the ground floor galleries, hit the library and think you're done-there's more.uo and downstairs. The earthquake exhibition is a highlight.
N.
Love coming to MTG. I discover something new every time I come here. My children love exploring and discovering the new and the old. We spent 3 hours here on our last visit.
J.
Short but informative. Very clean..
N.
Great museum, a really interesting insight into the Napier earthquake on the basement level. Lots of other exibits in the art levels etc. $10 for a grown up. Cheers!
A.
Glad to catch the 1.5 million buttons Holocaust exhibition but it deed seem rather cramped. Excellent exhibition on the Napier earthquake too.
J.
Hawke's Bays long history is presented reasonably well here in the limited space. With collections ranging from the early Maori settlers to the establishment of European settlements and a port.
There is a great collection of facts and presentations of the 1931 earthquake that shattered the area and forever changed Napier and the greater Hawkes Bay area.
There is an exhibiting art gallery that often changes so there is usually something new to see even if you've been often.
Free entry makes it a great place to take the kids on a rainy day and spend time exploring our rich history with them.
A.
This is a lovely, modern regional Museum. The earthquake exhibition is well worth a visit in itself and is very moving, there is also a fun dress up section.
M.
What an amazing museum very visual and informative, different floor with a different display. The Napier earthquake room is with seeing
Free entry
Shop and Bathroom on site
A.
Really enjoyed this free attraction. Friendly staff and certain exhibits changed regularly.
B.
Nice museum, was free entry so it was as expected. Some of the lights were too bright for the show cases. But nice building and design.
A.
Lovely museum, and it is free!!
R.
I have been to the museum many times say with my fmaily or for school but my recent visit was a bit unpleasant I was with my friend as we walk into to museum we weren't greeted with a smile but I look of disappointment from the lady at the front counter as my friend and I are both 14 we know about the rule and boundaries but that's not what she thought she rudely said the rules to us and repeated theres not taling photos which is clearly stated by the signs all around the place
All of that made us feel unwelcome and really putting a bummer on the rest of our day.
L.
The basement display of 1931 earthquake was great. The rest of the museum was pretty average
A.
Interesting Napier earthquake exhibition. Liked the Rita Angus painting in the gallery upstairs. Was saddened to learn about NZ's negative impact on the Pacific islands to gain superphosphate for our use.
K.
Great staff, love the artifacts and of course the knowledge and facts that you learn are priceless. The Napier Earthquake exhibition on the Basement floor is made more personal when you hear, see and read the personal accounts of Napier/Hawkes Bay Residents and how as a United Community throughout the Regions - overcame tragedy to rise and triumph adversity. The Kahungungu Maori Exhibition highlights past/future Maori Talent and Kaumatua/Artefacts within our turangawaewae , and even though I'm Whanau affiliated with my ancestors on the touch screen - I was still educated in history about them. Nice touch with the personal message korowai too! Diwali Exhibition is Amazing!! Must see. I Highly recommend the MTG for a Family outing, the Drop Zone is kiddie friendly full of activities for interaction between Adults & Children, Group tours and us Locals too.
N.
The kids and I followed a trail to find a list of items in the museum. It meant we went to each part and had to look closely to learn about the exhibits and find the things we needed.
C.
Was very good plenty to see liston too and read
J.
Amazing, the underground floor is the best, all about the earthquake and the Art Deco characteristic about Napier, lovely, and free (gold coin donation)
K.
Great little museum, sad history about the earthquake. Visiting Napier on holidays from Australia. Beautiful place to visit
D.
Great theatre space. Shame it doesn't get used much because it's an awesome area. Comfy theatre seats and teched out. Always enjoy the nz international film festival in here.
S.
Some good exhibitions but not enough for a National Museum. With CAN nearby perhaps ditch the arty exhibits and more museum ones
T.
Great museum especially about thd earthquake and the magical rebuild in two years into an art deco wonderland
H.

A lovely shop for a museum and gallery posters, note books and cards. I purchased a book on the Maori culture and history.
b.
Top place to visit and really interesting. A bright open place and not your usual museum. Worth a visit.
c.
It's free. Not worth paying to see the sparse displays really. Liked the plastic bottle under the sea art installation. Clever.

J.
Wonderful little museum. Good interactive sheet for kids to take around. And a children's playroom.
F.
The rows of seats were too close together. Every time someone wanted to get out, the whole row had to stand up to let them out.... Like a very slow Mexican wave.
R.
Went to watch MAMIL (Remounted). Venue was great, staff helpful, drinks pricing was fair and the show was fantastic.

(Translated) Museum of new architecture in picturesque Napier, divided into thematic areas, friendly and helpful desk staff.
The Maori area had a lot of interesting material, a pity for the dim lighting and the didactic confusion of some display cases.
In the Indian collection we found an almost scenographic installation of spices and perfumes, the display case with traditional costumes is also nice.
The Chinese area and the earthquake zone are interesting.
The cost of the ticket is 10 $ including the wardrobe.
