Reviews of Art Deco Trust
It was a great night. We were with the NZ Male Choir, part of the Art Deco week. One of the guy servers was doing a great job getting the dishes out. Smooth fast service! The food was wonderful. I had Chicken Cesar salad, tasty😋
We had an amazing time exploring the art deco precinct on the walking tour and understanding the many changes that followed the Feb 3 1931 earthquake in Napier. Our guides Eleanor and Bev were gracious and very knowledgeable about Napier and its history. We were left feeling impressed with the resilience of Napier residents and their spirit to rebuild. Will definitely be back soon for the vintage vehicle tours soon!
Went on a tour with tour guide Bev. She was lovely and very clearly spoken and knowledgeable. A wonderful way to see a Napier and experience an introduction to Art Deco in Napier. I’m hooked and my parents loved it. An easy walk for them also. A great gift shop with some nice souvenirs.
A wonderful place filled with such lovely volunteers that are very willing to share their passion and history of their Art Deco city. The store is a bit of a treasure trove, you never know what you might find, there are so many bits and bobs I wanted to leave with. The short video is perfect if you've only got 20-30 minutes to spare, otherwise if definitely recommend the guided walk. It's incredibly informative and gives you so much insight to the city you've already been strolling through. I didn't get a chance to take a vintage car tour but one of the guides was kind enough to spin me around the block, and what a beautiful car it is. You feel like you've been transported back in time.
Visited Gin Trap on arrival in Napier. Took in a couple of shows.
Visited bar on the beach excellent dance entertainment. Enjoyed looking at many old cars etc. Did miss the real atmosphere of Art Deco, the crowds and all the canceled events but will be back again next year.
I love everything art deco and don't mind supporting the trust. They do a fantastic job of preserving this unique town of Napier.
Had an amazing tour with this organization. It really bought the past to life and added a lot of value to our understanding and the enormity of the earthquake in the 30's and the ensuing rebuild.
They show a great little movie about the earthquake and what it changed.
Also, the gift shop has a wide selection of on theme goods.
Only minor comment is that there is a distinct underrepresentation of New Zealand made goods.
See the buildings pointed out and explained attached.
Loved it loved it loved it. Fantastic, we go from the UK every 2 years and get dressed up for the weekend. So much to see, do and join in at the Art Deco Festival. It's in Feb so be prepared for the sun and heat. Vintage cars, planes and air show right over the beach. Big bands with guest singers play in the Sound Shell, there's street entertainers, dance groups and bands all for free.
The ADT does a fantastic job of promoting the AD festival. Their shop has items you might like to buy to improve your AD look. They have a movie you can watch for $5 which gives the history, and you can book tours from here and go for a ride in an ADT car and receive a commentary on all the notable buildings.
Bev was a great tour guide. We all enjoyed our time in Napier learning about the earthquake and construction that followed.
They have great walking tour. Our guide is deep knowledge the history of the area. Highly recommend you join their walking tour and spend time after look at surrounding building.
Wonderful place if you enjoy NZ art deco and history
The Art Deco Trust is situated just across from the Art Deco themed hotel, Masonic Hotel and adjacent Emporium Eatery.
In addition to Art Deco style items and souvenirs, you can watch a couple of short period films here and sign up for Art Deco tours that cover the famous earthquake and redesign of Napier and other nearby communities like Hastings and Havelock North, using popular Art Deco architectural that was popular during the 1930s.
In the end, we like what the Art Deco Trust stands for and recommend visitors to Napier to pay them a quick visit to show support for their conservation efforts in the local community. Well done, guys!
Did the guided tour in this vintage car and was perfect, you get to see everything you need to see in Napier, and get a great explanation about art deco and the city’s history. The driver was super nice. Best thing to do in Napier
We had a wonderful walking tour with Roy. Very knowledgeable and interesting. Saw some stunning art deco buildings and heard the stories behind them. A must do for anyone visiting Napier.
The Art Deco trust has a large selection of Art Deco materials on sale as well as arranging trips in their vintage cars, to sight see in Napier
Art Deco is such an interesting era especially in Napier. I bought a lovely lamp, to go with my 1939 front door window pane. They have a short film about Napier earthquake you can watch, it's amazing to see what Napier went through that day and months after.
Called in during a Art Deco car tour. Would go back again for a longer visit
Very interesting shop that is run by the Art Deco Trust in Napier New Zealand. The shop is full of very interesting artifacts and such all for sale and with a clear reference to the Art Deco period. There are posters, clothes including all kind of both men's and women's hats. There are plenty of gifts to look and and possibly purchase. The Staff are very knowledgeable and will help you in any way they can. The prices might appear to be on the high side but remember it is all art Deco here.
Napier is a great little town to visit. Clean and friendly atmosphere. Lovely vineries near by. Spectacular beaches. Discover Ocean Beach south of town.
Great Art Deco experience, nice and active city! We love it! 👍🤩
Lovely trinkets and beautiful art deco lamps. A great place to take your guests from overseas or out of town..
Really worth a look. The walking tour was excellent too
We watched the short film about the Napier earthquake. It was informative and educational. Lovely service from the staff who went out of their way to allow us to watch it, as the last showing of the day had already started.
We did the 4:30pm Walking tour with Cindy. The tour begins with a 20 minute video of why Napier ended up wit all the Art Deco buildings - ighl recommended to watch even if not doing a tour.
Cindy was very knowledgeable and pointed out many art deco features we'd never even considered.
We are excited to come back for Art Deco weekend now on Cindy's recommendation!
Great selection of art deco memorabilia and souvenirs, along with knowledgeable staff who can tell you a lot about the town and the period. The hat selection is particularly good, although there are some supply issues with the larger sizes. Certainly worth dropping in if you're looking for a souvenir, but be prepared to walk away with something unexpected!
This is an absolute must visit... I kid you not... Beautiful building and you can take a wonderful guided tour in one of the amazing era cars... Stunning!!!!!
We did the 2pm tour. Took roughly 2 hours with a short, informative video at yhe end. Jane was out guide and was fabulous. Highly recommend.
Great art deco walk around napier
Love lover the festival. We had a fantastic tour in the open top vintage classic car. What a marvelous tour guide Brokery was. Very knowledgeable and such a gentleman. Thank you for your effort of entertaining my 14 year old daughter and her friend. Teenagers are hard to please but they appreciate your knowledge. Love supporting the heritage and the history of New Zealand.
Highly recommend :)
Very interesting historical details and events described throughout the walking tour. We even went inside an ASB Bank to see the interior art deco. You also learn some earthquake science like using cantilevers to hold awnings instead of using poles. Highly recommend as you won't learn these little details by yourself.
Worth a visit, the walking tour was informative and enjoyable
Great start to your Hawke's Bay experience in Napier. Great gifts, helpful staff and you can book your Art Deco car trips here too.
Well laid out with some interesting artefacts to look at...
As fans of art deco, my wife and I thoroughly recommend an Art Deco Trust walking tour. Our guide, Brocky, was very knowledgeable, engaging, and entertaining. We were so engrossed in the history of the town and buildings, that the time on our tour just flew past. Although there are self guiding options available, having an expert on hand was really great for pointing out features that would otherwise be easily missed.
Many thanks to Brocky and the Art Deco Trust.
Morning walking tour
We chose the morning walking tour which was a total 1.5 hours duration. The first 1/2 hour was spent watching a film about the earthquake in the cinema at the rear of the store. The remaining hour was spent on a guided tour of the town by volunteer guide Leigh. It was really interesting to learn about the history of the town and to be shown the art deco elements of the beautiful buildings of Napier. The tour was over far too quickly - I think we only walked around a block. If I had my time again, I'd take the afternoon tour which is 1 hour longer.
The trust offers a fantastic walking tour of the city center where a real life museum of 1930s buildings can be seen. Our guide was super knowledgeable and full of interesting facts and snippets of information. The morning started with a fascinating film about the 1930 earthquake followed by an hour long walkabout.
Great helpful and knowledable staff, free dress up clothes for photos available. Great art deco knick knacks, clothes, decor, calendar, posters etc great location with car parks outside. Art deco tours leave from there too. Great place to get Napier souvenirs from and great to have a look around.
Loved the tour in the old car.
I took a lovely walking tour through Napier with Peter, one of the volunteer guides. Very informative, lots of great background on the city, the earthquake, and the architecture.
We had a blast holiday in Hawke's Bay. One of them was the iconic Art Deco IN Napier which we explored at our own pace. Cheers.
Been coming for a few years but bit disappointed for 2020. The cost of many of the indoor events is getting out of hand. But..the soundshell music was great and the deco dancers were very talented. Their free stage show was phenomenal. Vintage dance lessons were good. Museum after dark, airshow, soap box derby, garden bar and the old cars all popular but the big disaster was the drunken behaviour of the youth who must have seriously preloaded due to the liquor ban. By 9.30pm Saturday the Police had to shut down the 2 free family events. There was no visible security protecting the street band and families. The Trust and the city need to seriously look at how they manage intoxicated idiots or the whole thing could implode.
If you appreciate Art Deco, then this is the place to visit. There are lots of reasonably-priced Art Deco items for sale.
The walking history tour is a must do on a Napier visit. The guides were excellent and v informative. We loved it.
Did the two and half hours guided walk, it was really interesting. Very nice and friendly guide. Lots of information about the buildings but also the earthquake. Would definitely recommend it.
A really important place to help you learn about the history of Napier - enjoyed the film show. Lovely gift shop and reasonably priced - a bit different to the norm!
My favourite decade and place in NZ
The volunteers and docents did a very good job and were beautifully attired for their roles. Regrettably, a piece of costume jewelry my wife purchased in the shop fell apart the same evening and we couldn’t make the telephone number we were given on the receipt work to ask about it.
It's a curious shop for Art Deco fans but there are plenty of them around too that might have cheaper prices. The people who work inside are dressed up too. If you just want a cheap 20s dress, you'd better get it online half the price, unless you are looking for some vintage real thing
Great walking tour and lovely people running/volunteering. Very interesting. Understandably everyone very proud of this lovely town. Thanks to Barry for the tour. We hope to come back shortly.
Great service, nice atmosphere
Excellent Art Deco tour. As a local I have been on several tours, but they upgrade and change slightly. Always interesting, especially with Overseas visitors.
The walking tour is a must do. So worth it and don't miss this tour
Lovely art deco town. Very interesting history. Plenty of wifi cafes for those visiting from a cruise ship. Beautiful gardens along the foreshore.
The walks are led by local volunteers who know and love their town. They add colour and background to the pretty pastel buildings in the town centre. The $26 fee supports the Trust and its work.
Love to spend time wandering this store. Perfect for gift shopping. A real taste of Napier’s Art Deco history . Friendly and helpful staff . A Napier city must do .
Hotel experience was lovely and the dining room took me back to Europe. Lovely decor!
Best shop. Lots of exciting items to buy. You can even dress up in some Art Deco clothes. You go there to get your tickets for the Art Deco walks
Lots to see or buy. Interesting and heaps to learn about 1931. The staff are friendly and knowledgable.
We did one of the guided tours; a great way to get an appreciation of Napier as the ‘Art Deco capital of the world’
Was great awesome learning experience
they offer and amazing "art deco" tour
Great vibe at the festival.
Very informative tour of Napier
The trust which is manned by local volunteers is doing a marvellous job protecting and enhancing the Art Deco nature of Napier. Also assisting visitors and events locally.
They do a very good tour which is started with a short movie explaining the history behind the art deco architecture. Well worth the time.
I love this shop!!!! Interesting pieces and gifts to find in here. Also the staff, music and items really create the ambience of the Art Deco era.
Great tour guides who know thier stuff
Art Deco tours in Napier are available here. Tours are using vehicle or walking. Also available are some gift items.
Very helpful staff, but the Deep in the Heart of Deco Tour was ridiculously rushed for older clients. We had to give up and miss the last half.
Wonderful exhibition of cubist art forms, the section on kereru station and the contributions of the Nelson family should be a must see for any Hawke's bay citizen.
Excellent walking tour with guide Tony who shared lots of local knowledge and Art Deco details.
Had an exemplary walking tour with Brocky from the Art Deco Trust. Also some very nice items in the gift shop.
Went on the art deco weekend and saw loads of old vehicles and people dressed up. A great weekend.

(Translated) To visit! It has a lot of authentic material from the Art Deco era, the ladies, I think the owners, dress in 30s clothes. Don't miss the video, ask, with the story of the earthquake that changed Napier's face in 36

Da visitare! Ha molto materiale autentico dell'epoca Art Deco, le signore, credo le proprietarie, vestono con vestiti anni 30. Da non perdere il filmato, chiedere, con la storia del terremoto che cambiò la faccia di Napier nel 36
