Reviews of The Nelson Provincial Museum
C.
Nice museum. Not huge, but the exhibits are well presented, and looked after.
When we visited there was an animatronic dinosaur exhibition upstairs, which was excellent, but this isn't a permanent fixture.
Possibly a bit pricey at $16 per person.
S.
Awesome dinosaur exhibit. Well priced for the family. Excellent local history. Friendly staff
A.
Nice one ☝️. Not so big right at the heart of the City. Easy to find. Children should be accompanied to avoid breakage of the display, they are precious. See you again.
A.
Nice collection of dinosaur's bones. My son loved it
S.
My husband and I had the pleasure of attending this BRILLIANT museum exhibition. My husband LOVED the dinosaurs (he sounds like one when he snores!). It was an educational and enjoyable experience, and the dinosaur models were so well put together and so beautiful that I wanted to dump my husband for one of them 😉 sorry Rex haha xx staff were very pleasant, helpful and knowledgeable. Better than Rex!
I.
Good day to visit the museum on a rainy days. Learned a lot about the dinosaurs.
D.
Took our 5 year old Boy to see the Dinosaur exhibit. He absolutely loves dinosaurs but seeing and hearing them up close was a bit overwhelming for him so he didn't stick around for long. The staff gave a very warm welcome and gave our boy some headphones to dampen the noise. All in all it was an interesting exhibition, albeit rather limited.
J.
Free for locals and worth a donation . Very helpful staff. The layout has 3 distinct areas and it is important to up the stairs and lifts. The Cawthorn institute is celebrated up stairs. Us the National Geographic Photography exhibition. Amazing photos. The history of Nelson is down stairs. From geology to Maori and more recent history such as pottery.
There is a gift shop and parking areas are close.
Not far from the Suter art gallery so make a double visit.
J.
ALWAYS a good plan to go visit.always seem to find something new to read or listen to. The Nelson fire display was great. Can't wait to see what's next
J.
April 2021 :
So interesting.
D'velle Is, the Maori taonga ❤️
Variety of heritage.
My youth was in all of those rooms upstairs.
D.
In the middle of town, this small museum was good value. I spent the hour there with the non local $5 entry. That's only cause the parking in the city had a 1 hr limit, could have stayed longer. Great history of Nelson, Iwi and English history, even some parts about animals. Receptionist was friendly too.
F.
this museum is worth to visit. has good collection of historic stuff.
It gives great details of Nelson history. admission is only $5.
location is the best. in the heart of Nelson CBD.
S.
Great museum, I've been a couple of times in the last few years and the recent Dinosaur exhibit was just fantastic.
Highly recommend
A.
It was awesome, the kids really enjoyed all the interactive exhibitions.
P.
Dinosaurs were displayed with many more knowlegde of how they extinct n many species of that tym. We enjoyed theme - What was the life before dinosaurs.
H.
They have new exhibitions every few months and they are really well put together I always enjoy my time there.
J.
A delightful experience made all the better by the wonderful front of house team (thank you)! We brought the family here (two preschoolers) and there were enough things of interest to keep them entertained. Granted, it would be better suited to older kids but hey, it was a rare drizzly morning, so the kids were excited to be out of the house ;) We caught a photography exhibition which was right up my alley.
L.
Impressed at the history on display, interesting and informative focus on this unique region.
C.
Loved this museum. It had a lot of interesting history from the very early pioneering days of Nelson, as well as the Maori heritage. The Anne Frank display was great, as was the National Geographic photos. An easy way to spend a few hours.
T.
Great little museum. We visited for the dinosaur exhibition, very interesting
M.
Saw the dinosaur exhibit. Pretty cool, good cheap price for entry etc.
Y.
Because of the very limited area there wasn't as much as I had hoped for
P.
Went and saw the national geographic exhibition and it was super interesting and caught attention of me, my 22 year old sister and 91 year old granddad! This shows this exhibition was totally worth it. The staff there were very kind
H.
Well presented photographic exhibition. However, the written description below each photo was too small to read from a suitable standing distance from the photo. There was no soap in the ladies toilet dispenser. Overall, a worthwhile place to be on a wet Sunday afternoon. Free for locals.
S.
I always enjoy the exhibitions here. I've seen the permanent one several times and continue to enjoy it.
J.
Always interesting to visit. In a very scenic part of Nelson city. Numerous nearby cafes and eateries.
P.
Entry is $5 for adults. There is a bit about the history of Nelson and the geology that helped Nelson, but if you are not particularly interested in Nelson then there is not a lot. Bit of art upstairs but most of upstairs is being prepared for the next exhibition.
A.
Really great experience, the dinosaur exhibition was fabulous. The kids enjoyed the models and digging for bones. Well done
J.
Always a great place to slip into holiday mode and learn our local history as well as a wide variety of visiting exhibits
D.
A marvelous collection of local history, lighting can make reading information awkward. However at $5 a head will have me back to learn more about the greater Nelson district.
Upstairs is an amazing collection of National Geographic photographs, they are a must see.
D.
Covers local history (pakeha & Maori), exactly as expected for a provincial museum. Great location in centre of town. Small gift shop. Clean toilets. Air conditioning (great for a hot day!). Street parking only. Recommended for overseas & NZ tourists.
A.
Visited while the National Geographic photo display and the Anne Frank exhibitions were on and I have to say it was really moving and not for the faint of heart.
The kids part is pretty cool too just abit messy from the typical carnage of children.
S.
This was a very nice smaller museum. Awesome history and lovely stories. My wife and I particularly liked the one around the elephants. Lots about classic New Zealand. The museum definitely punches above its weight. When we went they also had the moon exhibition on which was great to see. Definitely worth dropping in while in town.
M.
Dino Exhibition was small but the kids loved it.
A.
Great little museum. Very interesting
M.
Have been to the photographic exhibition twice. Stunning. The Anne Frank exhibition is very thought provoking. The museum is always worth a visit
F.
Great Dinosaur exhibit on when we visited!
J.
We love the museum, thanks guys. Keep up the good work.
J.
Great exhibition about the strengthening link between dinosaurs and birds.
A.
compared to other museums I have seen in smaller centers it does not compare well, not worth the five dollar entry fee, the displays are mediocre and spread out to fill the space. Nelson does so many things so well but this facility is a disappointment.
L.
really cool little museum!
H.
The rugby display was pathetic! Not much effort went into that! The lower Gallery was a bit better but the lighting was terrible. As we were an older group & all of us found it very hard to read about things. The best part was the cafè.
G.
The museum doesn't look like much from the outside but was a wonderful treat. It is inexpensive as well and not too large. It is very interactive and a nice place for younger children to visit. I enjoyed many of the exhibits that had headphones for listening instead of always reading. There was a lot of variety in the exhibits from NZ history, to flora & fauna. There was a special exhibit on the 2011 Christchurch Earthquake and about earthquakes in general that was excellent.
L.
This is a great smaller museum - We loved it as it is right in the centre of the city, by all the shops and cafes, and so it fits so easily into a day out. Easy access, easy and enjoyable to look around - the local history floor has so many different things that there is something everyone would be interested be, and all laid out and presented well. Easy to call in and then have a coffee after. The visiting exhibitions are often good for kids too but a manageable size for children as well
S.
Always good exhibits on at museum. Personally recommend the National Geographic photo exhibit and Anne Frank exhibit. Great asset to Nelson
H.
Nice little museum with lot of history. Friendly staff.
M.
Loved it. Very sobering but thought provoking Anne Frank display on at present and the National Geographic Photo display was intriguing.
A.
Great time always had here great interactive activities for the children and adults too
A.
Very nice museum to see the history of dinosaurs, the staff was very kind and helpful, I highly recommend this place if you are wondering around Nelson. The gift shop has cool stuff aswell. The price in not to expensive and on a rainy day it is always a cool culture oriented activity to do.
D.
Lovely exhibits and the team were friendly and inviting.
L.
This time was the dinosaur exhibit. Awesome
C.
Too expensive to visit the dinosaur display, especially when you live here in Nelson
N.
A small museum but costs $5 per adult.
M.
If this is one of your first few kiwi museum experience then it definitely worth a look for some provincial history and geography knowledge. Or else you could be underwhelmed like us since it was quite small and less impressive than some other free museums we've seen across the country. But staff were nice.
P.
For such a small museum they pack in a lot. Interesting stories and hands-on things for the kids.
S.
Visited the museum to look at the National Geographic exhibition. We didn’t look at anything else. The exhibition was well laid out and I had plenty of time to wander around looking at the pictures and read about the story behind them.
I was a bit annoyed that they were trying to get non-residents to pay more to enter. Yes, I understand the pricing differential should be applied in poor countries, but don’t see the need to do this in a rich country like New Zealand.
G.
The Moon exhibit is exceptional. Definitely worth a view. It is fun and interactive for the kids. The rest of the museum is well presented but similar to other NZ museums.
E.
Absolutely enjoyed our walk through this museum, was great to read abit more about Whakatu (Nelsons) history some of it was surprising but really enjoyed our visit.
T.
The current photo exhibition on the first floor is excellent! The regular “Nelson story” exhibition feels a bit scattered and not that inspiring. Still worth a visit.
T.
I always enjoy visiting the museum, staff are always helpful and friendly. Exibits change regularly with lots of interesting and educational material.
G.
Wonderful tiny but educational museum. Conveniently located and admission fee at $5 only. At the moment, there is an excellent exhibits of new Zealand green stones.
A.
I guess I've been spoilt by provincial museums like Puke Ariki in New Plymouth, but Nelson Provincial Museum seemed like a fairly poor attempt at making a museum interesting. I was wheeling someone in a wheelchair on the day and no issues with accessibility, but the ground floor main display area has a strange step near the exit that was not particularly obvious - nearly wheeled over it.
M.
The exabition slice of life was fantastic very informative with interactive displays and the rooms set up as they would have been years ago bought back memories and laughter from my Dad and myself.
P.
A little musuem with a $5 charge for non- residents. Give a concise history of the region. Not interactive for children, more about display. Upstairs is a children's discovery area. Also another area upstairs for non-permanent visiting exhibition.
a.
An absolutely wonderful experts!!, very helpful staff, it was our 1st time but we will be back again.
H.
Great place to go, even with the kids, free if you live in Nelson, which is great. There is heaps of local history, and there are different exhibits upstairs all the time, there is a bug one on at the moment, and my 4 year old loved it. Definitely a good wet weather day activity
L.
I saw the Pounamu-excebition here, which was just fascinating! Went there several times to really catch all the info and look at the captivating exhibits.
For me it was a bit cold temperature-wise, but the darkened and quiet rooms with the lighting focusing on the Greenstones was in my eyes a great choice to let them shine without distraction.
Everyone going and watching these national treasures should take the offer to get a feel for those calming, ancient boulders!
L.
National Geographic exhibition was on display, highly recommend going here for some beautiful rich Nelson history
C.
Excellent museum, good history of local area. Wonderful exhibits..
T.
Decent little museum and a great way to spend an hour or two. Was fun to learn about Nelson and we were fortunate to be able to see the National Geographic photo exhibition as well.
M.
Well presented, pleasant and diverse representation of NZ history, geography and culture especially about Nelson region. Very Good customer service too.
G.
very interesting stuff here !
D.
Always worth a visit and the current exhibition includes the Dunedin 1000 children 45 year study. Fascinating!
K.
Pretty small ... the most interesting aspect was the temporary photo exhibit. Kids were not very excited about the visit but it was somewhere to go on a rainy day
V.
Boutique museum. Just the right size for families and older people. Interesting National Geographic exhibition on when I went.
A.
A nice provincial museum, held exhibition about the history of Nelson, and its main people, especially the gold miners and the major crime gang of 4 who terrorise the people of Nelson at that time. Although the exhibition halls are rather small, there is plenty of history held inside. The staff members are efficient though the front staff often look short-staffed.
A.
An awesome place to visit with ever changing upstairs exhibition and a local / regional exhibition in the downstairs gallery. Highly recommend a visit.
C.
Awesome dinosaur exhibition. Well worth taking you kids. Was busy around midday so had a short wait to get in. Might pay to go earlier in the morning.
J.
Lovely little museum, I like to pop in every now and again
M.
We went to see the National Geographic photo exhibition.
Gorgeous photos nicely presented.
A.
Small but very interesting, well-presented exhibition of greenstone/pounamou artifacts. I never realised there were so many different textures and I learned a lot of new readings on Maori culture
G.
Small and interesting museum in centre of town.Spent 90 minutes there wandering around the different and well labelled display.Free parking in town as it was Sunday ...
d.
It was kinda small but it was still fun
P.
The Nelson Museum along with its sister ship the Suter Gallery are some of the gems of Nelson. Always changing and the docents are informed. Not just about the collections but where many of the providers of the collections are to be found. It's a terrific beginning to a treasure trail. Try it.
F.
Interesting museum to do with young kids. They have ephemeral exhibition (was the Permian one) and the kids liked it. They also have a small activity area. Prices are decent.
B.
A perfect way to begin your trip to the Tasman area. Great museum with displays about early settlers and their stories, breweries, ships and lots of great historical information on Farewell Spit and Abel Tasman.
S.
Friendly staff, clean facilities and a very interesting telling of local history. We enjoyed the Moon exhibition while we were there today.
J.
Brilliant! Great layout, the Da Vinci exhibition is amazing but so are the permanent fixtures. So good that it's right in the CBD, well worth a visit.
A.
whilst it suggests an hour to look around, if you plan on reading everything allow for closer to 1 and a half hours. some lighting didn't allow for easy reading of some of the info (was hidden by the shadow of the item it was describing)
J.
amazing display staff were fabulous so helpful and friendly
A.
Easily accessible and in the centre of town. A wonderful exhibition is on at present by National Geographic. Amazing photography. A very nice way to pass some time.
S.
Amazing staff, the little torches for kids are a real game changer, well done that man.
A.
The space exhibition on the second floor was great :-)
K.
Nice place to spend some time :)
A.
Very informative about early life in and development of the area. A few exhibits not up and running fully. The staff were exceptionally friendly and obviously very passionate about the history of the area
G.
We were impressed with our visit to this place when we were in Nelson visiting relatives. A must if you are at all interested in our early history. We were impressed to say the least.
D.
The exhibits here are always high quality and fun to see. If you want to learn about the area there is always an exhibit open that tells you everything you need to know
M.
it was good I did like how the locals didn't have to pay. for its size it was okay some good local history. My nephew enjoyed the children's area upstairs too.
D.
Well worth a visit.
Best priced museum I've been in
W.
Can access several informative exhibitions for just $5 but a male staff at the front was not friendly.
Y.
It is ok but too small.....
T.
Well worth the time. Really enjoyed the Anne Frank display
M.
Pretty cool little museum. Costs $5 per entry. Doesn't really compete with some of the bigger museums in New Zealand that are free (donations welcomed).
H.
A really good museum, the exhibition is well thought through and presented. The staff were great, friendly and helpful.
S.
Good displays. Anne Frank exhibition very thought provoking.
K.

(Translated) Not a large museum. However, if you pass by reading one by one, it takes less than an hour! Admission fee $5 for adults, card payment is possible! If you travel with small children, I recommend it.
This museum is not big place but it is enough to give you enjoy experience. If you focus on all of exhibits, you can spend 1 hour. This place is perfect for children.
