Reviews of Cape Egmont Lighthouse
Nice views of the mountain ,ocean and the light house wasn't sure if we enter ..
Very easy to access from the main highway. Not many people at all. Beautiful view to the Tasman sea and Mt Taranaki.
Nice detour off Surf highway. Very picturesque lighthouse. Read reviews beforehand as entrance has been made to look private. Go to end of road and watch the rough surf hitting the large rocky foreshore.
Beautiful spot. Not far from the surf highway main drag. Not overly well sign posted but an easy find with google maps. It is located alongside farmland just beside the road. On a good day you’ll get the mountain as a back drop. The history of the lighthouse is well displayed. Well worth a visit.
Couldn't work out how to go up close, turns out you have to go through the chain gate on foot and walk past the house.
Beautiful place of course and great to see on the road trip
Great place for photo opportunities. On a clear day and clouds let up you can get a bonus shot of Mt. Taranaki in the background. Please do respect the locals property around the area and park properly
Nice place to have a little break. Lighthouse is no longer operated by a person so nobody around. You can get right up to it, just cross the chain and cattle grid then through the gate past the house. View is quite good from the base just keep an eye out for cows. There is a small beach though it's rocky not sandy.
Beautiful light house. It is open to the public through the gate. There are plenty of signs that tell you to stay out of certain areas. Worth the 20 minute detour. You can also freedom camp for a fee near the lighthouse on the ocean. The spot is not shown in any of the camp guides but just pay the property owner and you can camp on the best beach spot on the island.
Unfortunately the clouds hid the mountain but the sunset off to the coast made the trip out worth it.
A majestic view of the Lighthouse with Mt Taranaki at the back of it in a fine day is the selling pt of this landmark. Only a short drive off the main road, there’s no sign post on the main road pointing the location of the Lighthouse though.
It was a neat visit. I was surprised how rocky the bay was. Be careful if you walk along it, the rocks are very slippery. The light house was cool. Easy family friendly stroll.
Cool place to go. It was very quiet and seren all of 3 people when I visited, I would recommend checking weather forcasts and going when its sunny and not much wind.
Lovely place to be. We didn't get to go up the lighthouse nor lucky enough to see Mt Taranaki on its full presence but enjoyed our time there. Quiet and peaceful.
Well worth a look. You have to travel on some gravel roads and at times it is narrow. At the end of the road the view is beautiful and the lighthouse is cute, but you can't get into it at times of the year due to bad weather. We went in July and it was really windy & cold.
Stunning spot in beautiful Taranaki. Private entrance so respect the land and the animals but you can park up and go for a wander. Well worth the visit of your cruising the cost line.
~40 mins drive from new plymouth, no clear sign how to get close to the light house. Gate was shut and chained when i got there
Good for a expirence but can't get in to the light house just can have a walk around and sea the beauty of the nature
Very interesting history of this Lighthouse. Good for kids school project. For best photos, go to the end of the Cape road till it turns right near the beach. That's best spot to capture the Lighthouse & Mt Taranaki together. Otherwise the Lighthouse is accessible through a private property, it's on a little elevated molehill that offers fantastic 360° views...
Came to see the sunset but unfortunately it was cloudy towards the horizon, still very beautiful though! Lighthouse had a sign across driveway "closed due to COVID-19" so I could only take photos from a distance.
Not much to see but worth the trip to see the lighthouse and share a yarn with the friendly locals collecting a feed from the sea. Nice views of the mountain.
Great place for taking photos and enjoying the views. However watch out for the locals living next to the lighthouse, unwelcoming signs placed everywhere trying to scare tourists away, one lady had a go at me outside my car. The lighthouse has always been a top tourist site so you think they would of realise that before moving there.
Cannot go inside or near the lighthouse. That was the biggest turn off after traveling some 40 odd kms from New Plymouth. Well the views are exhilarating just from the photography perspective. Well if you into photography and want to get some good shots then it worth the visit. Otherwise can ke skipped. Cud not spot the Mt. Taranaki in the background as it got all cloudy. So that was a bummer for me.
Stunning view, great place for picnic but no parking, or signs
But it felt like that we were not welcomed there as there was a chain on the main entrance.
Lucky a family which was over there informed us that the site is accessible.
Not many places to park if busy. There are areas roped off where you cannot park. Interesting about the lighthouse. Go up, have a look in through the little windows - cant go inside.
Better to be there in summer where you can capture the lighthouse and the mountain in the same frame... good place for a photo shoot
Good spot
Stunning views! A must visit when you are in New Plymouth.
Awesome heritage site. Sad qbout thw wrecked car still there.
Worthy of the stop. Get the camera out
Decent enough on a sunny day !
Light house for west coast of north island. Historic site.
Not much to see but worth the trip to see the lighthouse and share a yarn with the friendly locals collecting a feed from the sea. Nice views of the mountain.
Good photo opportunity if you have a campervan
Better to be there in summer where you can capture the lighthouse and the mountain in the same frame... good place for a photo shoot
Awesome place to go and take the kids!
Great views. Easy walk up to the light house
Beautiful lighthouse. Great photo with Taranaki behind. Private field not foreign friendly.
Great views. Easy walk up to the light house
Looks nice but you can only see it from far away. It's located on someone's property with a fence and farmland around it.
Windy, wild and wonderful. Worth the short deviation from the main road
Wonderful place with stunning sunsets, met lovely people there
Beautiful view of the Taranaki mountain and sea view. Visitors has to go on a nice sunny day for the beautiful mountain background view. Car parking spaces upto 5 are available near the sea.
Nice place to stop. After looking at the lighthouse drive towards the coast and take in the ocean air
Good photo opportunity if you have a campervan
Nice drive from New Plymouth on a sunny weekend to the Cape Egmont Lighthouse, still kept in a good condition, cool little info board in front of it as you approach it, good little weekend outing!
You get a nice view on the mountain and you have a pretty view at the ocean.
The lighthouse isn't very spectacular if you are there.
If you can spare the time and if it is on your way, you can check it out.
But in my opinion, it is not worth driving there as a goal.
Awesome views and a pretty little light house.
A good place for shooting stars,u will must do it,just look my night picture!
Good to get to, but not much to do once you get there. Cute lighthouse though.
This is a hidden gem tucked away 45 mins from new Plymouth. Beautiful views of the sunset across the waves. A short climb up the stairs to the light house. Just beware no washrooms around.
Isolated but awesome experience...
An accessible light house that will still remind you of how rugged the coast can be.
Majestic lighthouse on top of hill 2 min drive from turnoff. Rocky beach along shore.
Went on a Monday at 11am but no signs to gain access. Chains across property to warn people away.
There is a dirt track which leads to a private house but you need a four wheel drive or lose a muffler.
Not sure why this site has visiting hours.
Cool and epic place for photos!
Worthy of the stop. Get the camera out
Awesome place to go and take the kids!
Decent enough on a sunny day !
Enjoyed being there and talking with the family that live on the property through which you walk to the light-house. Apparently her father used to man the light-house up until the 80s when it was automated. Nice chill place to rest and enjoy the sea views as well 😊
Nice ocean view
Beautiful! Must visit!
Remote beautiful view of the beach and a view of Mount Taranaki.
beautiful on sunny days, but very windy up there!
out of the way but a lovely spot. Also check out the replica one at the Cape Egmont boat club with a great museum
Absolutely beautiful setting, lovely views of mount Taranaki and the beautiful west coast beach & ocean, nice and quiet out here most of the time. Well worth the drive out from New Plymouth
Nice peaceful spot.

Historical place.
Beautiful views.
Little isolated.
Found the ambiance little dirty and unhygienic as it appeared occupied by cows which were sitting all around the lighthouse and there was cow dung spread randomly over the grass.
Good stop on the Surf Highway. The entry to the lighthouse looks like a private section, but you can go through there.
Beautiful vista. Can see the windsurfers from the lighthouse. Lighthouse built in 1865 so cool.
A must! Off the beaten track but has a great view and always some animals to see! Great stop on a road trip.
Amazing beautiful place but it can be cold, also be aware that it may not live up to those expectations. However, it is so beautiful and amazing historic.
It is a good place to take some nice pictures. Even though it is quite a long drive, I nevertheless recommend a short stop if you are nearby!
Good view but a fine clear day would have been better to get the perfect picture
Nice place. But only attraction around was the light house. Might not be worth driving all the way if not camping
Stop by on the way home from auckland, and experienced the serenity of morning ambience, had good pictures for instagram, and have delightful breakfast picnic next to the sea, very romantic place
Beautiful scenic spot on the coast. Crazy lady was hanging around our campervan, guess she was assuming we were freedom campers.
Lovely views of Taranaki and a great isolated beach here. Not suitable for swimming but it is such a great place to relax and unwind
Best place to visit when you want to explore a sea shore along with a lighthouse and a snow mountain (mt taranaki) in the background
Amazing
