Absolutely awesome, everyone needs to try it out at least once (if you're not afraid of heights). Was my 2nd time up there in 3years and I'm absolutely not the fittest person 😅. Dragged my partner up this time which was a cool experience. Worth the grueling climb especially on a clear day when you can see the national park mountains and the white cliffs in the distance. Will definitely do it again and again so our kids can experience it and we can all watch the sunset together

Very STEEP! Best short track ever! So much fun and adventures! Stunning view all the way up and down. Please do wear proper shoes and make sure you are not afraid of height. Don't miss this when you visit New Plymouth.

A great landmark tourist attraction in the city. The Rock/hill is not very tall but when the only way to go up there is by climbing it could be quite a challenge for many of us. In fact it’s a rock climbing exercise & you may need to use both hands any time. Up on there you have 360 panorama of the whole city & it’s really worth it.

Great little climb with a good view. First half is stairs second half is an easy climb with a solid chain for assistance. Can comfortably get to the top in under 20mins

Whao, what a stunning views from the top of the rock, sun rise is simply amazing. Bit of a task to climp up after the stairs but worth visiting.

You need to be fit to rock climb this one. I'm not joking. Not for the faint hearted, but when you do get to the top it's worth it. Just one of many I've ticked off my Bucket list.

Amazing climb! Be prepared for a challenge took about 20mins to get up with a 10 year old. I wouldn't bring younger kids up when raining or without daylight as 1 slip or misplaced step could end in disaster. Views are amazing!! Must do when you come to New Plymouth.

Short but steep climb which is probably not best done in jandals (bare feet would be better than jandals but rocks get hot in sun). Great views from the top. If you are lucky you can see Mt Taranaki, Mt Ruapehu and Ngarahoe

On a clear day this steep walk / clamber is well worth the sweat. The last half of the climb is very rough with an essential chain to hold on to. Don't try it unless you are sure-footed and have strong enough arms to haul your body weight a bit. Besides Mt Egmont, the power station and harbour, the whole city, beaches, coastline and farm lands are spread below you. A really rewarding climb. New Plymouth is an amazing little city and highly under-rated.

My favourite spot in New Plymouth. First climbed it as a teenager in the 80’s with my Dad. Dragged my kids up it in the early 2000’s and recently did it again with my (now) elderly dad and adult kids. Gets a bit busy in summer. The climb up is pretty steep but the views are fantastic. Highly recommended.

Short steep climb to top. Great views on fine day.

If you’re afraid of heights, avoid this spot. Sudden elevation throughout the climb. The top half is just climbing over rocks so wear good shoes and preferably keep your hands free.

Amazing views, worth the climb!

It's not that easy to climb up the Rock but once you reach on the top it will be a great feeling. We can see the coastal areas and the mount Taranaki. It gives a very beautiful view from the top. We need to be very careful with climbing the Rock.

Plebty of parking available at the beginning of the climb. The first half of the climb was easy as it consisted of well maintained stairs. The second half was a bit challenging as you have to literally climb up the rocks. But it shouldn’t be too hard if you hold on to that steel chain on the side. Once you reach the top you’ll get rewarded with a great view of New Plymouth. Climbing back down was more challenging than climbing up. Overall a nice climb which requires a fair bit of fitness and coordination for the second half.

Really fun climb and I do mean a climb! The first half is just a steep staircase then the last bit is a very steep climb up uneven slippery rocks with a chain to help climb. Definitely need some fitness, good shoes, and not be scared of heights to pull it off. But the view is very worth it at the top even in bad weather!

Parking: plenty parking Duration: 30min to the summit, first 5min are fairly easy with well maintained steps, the remaining 25min need more cautious Fitness level: intermediate to advanced, requires some climbing, with the chain provided should be not a problem. Only need to overcome the fear and be confident Worthiness: definitely should come and check out this if you like rock climbing, easy access from New Plymouth, and suitable difficult level. Kids-friendly: may not suitable for too young kids (say under 7? ). Good place to show courage :)

Enjoyed my time climbing and the views really pay off. I had a water bottle in my hand, so essentially climbing with one arm. You don’t need to carry water with you, it’s pretty easy with two arms, imho. Best views come sunset time :)

Great climb and really great views

Paritutu rock offers great views from the top, however, you have to climb up a very steep route first. The signs all recommend you wear proper footwear, and it's obvious when you get up there. I wouldn't recommend this climb for the young, or the elderly.

Wow! This is one hell of a climb! You start on some high steps, a few turns ........then boom! Rock Face with some well placed chains, then you pull yourself up, peeping at the amazing views. The top is in sight! Can you do it! Up to you, but once up a fabulous view, and feeling of success! Have a good look then enjoy the feeling! Ah then you have to come down, chains, high steps......good luck! Not for the faint hearted.

Great hike up the rock with chain and all for sunset. Need to take strong footwear sign seriously otherwise can be slippery. Good view of New Plymouth and Mt. Taranaki.

Fantastic view and fairly short climb. You definitely need some medium level of fitness but it’s possible to take the kids and have a short outing!

I love these kind of adventures and the climb up this rock just had to be done. A group of us were exploring New Plymouth. Two of our group decided that while nursing injuries it probably wasn't a good idea to attempt. I was surprised at the steepness of the hill and was grateful for the chains firmly attached to the rock, which were used to haul ourselves up. I was baffled when a person struggling to come down hill had a dog on her shoulder. I offered help but it's definitely a place to not bring dogs. The view from the top was just awesome. Although a beautiful day, Mt Taranaki was proving elusive, so I concentrated my photographs on the coastline view instead. On the perfect day, I imagine you will get an amazing view of the mountain from up here. If you are bringing camera equipment up here, be prepared to need both hands free for the climb.

Want a bit different short climb, visit Paritutu rock and you will not be disappointed. Awesome view on the top, good climbing shoes recommend.

Although, it is a difficult climb because the way up is very narrow, it is very doable. You do not need to be fit. It is a half hour climb. Take your time and be kind to yourself. There are about 3 or 4 sets of steps to ease you into the climb. Observe climbing manners, excuse me, hello, thanks, and waiting for people coming up or down before you do your part of the climb.

Short climb up a few steps, then scaling rocks with the aid of a chain. Fantastic view of the city and beyond, including Taranaki on a clear day. Just wear sturdy footwear (trail shoes are fine).

What an adventure!! So cool. If you are in Taranaki, you must climb it, in summer, make sure you are in breathable and comfortable clothes for the climb. On a hot day you should consider a dip in the ocean after your climb

This is a really good place for pictures. I will come back in a few mounts, because the wether wars not so good. It is not for every body because the second part from the way up to the top is not so good. You have to climb, but it is feasible. So if it is not too windy, go to the Paritutu Rock!😊

Must visit in New Plymouth! I went on a clear, sunny day and had so much fun walking and climbing up the rocks! Suitable for all levels of fitness but requires some level of dexterity, and not ideal for elderly. Great view of New Plymouth at the summit with Mt Taranaki, Mt Ruapehu and Mt Tongariro.

You can see the entire New Plymouth from the tip of the rock. Takes about 30mins to climb the rocks using the chain but it totally worth it.

Need suitable footware and fitness to climb on the top. Beautiful view.

Nice place to look out over New Plymouth and it's surrounding landscapes. The walk is short bit very steep and just a rockface with customs really to make sure you bring decent footwear.

Its quite a bit risky as the rock may get lot slippery when climate is wet, but as you reach the top you can see an amazing view of the tasman sea, the entire new plymouth as well aa the giant Mt. Taranaki ( taranaki can be seen if the climate is good)

This climb is a bit of a scramble near the top, which I quite enjoyed. Certainly not for anyone with a fear of heights.

Great challenging hill climb starts with many stairs and as you near the top it's a bit of a rocky climb, big grunty chains are secured all the way up and certainly help to keep balance on the rocky terrain. Mostly an easy climb with rewarding views at the top. Sturdy footwear is a must and patience as there's all walks of people young and old giving it a go too. Overall very enjoyable activity

Well worth the climb up the stairs and then rock scrambling up the cliff with chain-assist. The climb is as much part of the fun as the views on top of Sugarloaf islands, Mt Taranaki and New Plymouth.

Brilliant view from a small volcanic cone on the edge of New Plymouth. Steep climb with good shoes required as the last section is almost vertical rock face. There is a chain to use for safety to hold on to.

Was looking for something to do after work while visiting a customer in New Plymouth. It is a short but steep trip to the top, and is quite difficult at times, but the view at the top is worth it. Great spot to take photos of mount Taranaki.

Short, steep rock. Challenging to ascend & more so the descent. Especially for those who find heights difficult... But the view from the top is outstanding. 360° views including Mt Taranaki (weather permitting). Carparks available but no other facilities.

Great view over the ocean and New Plymouth. Bit of a hard climb but if you are fit and consider yourself young it should not be a problem.

Saw this rock from across the city and went to investigate it. We got there and realised you can climb it! After a few flights of steps the past becomes a bit of a rock climb with a chain to hold and pull yourself up the steep rock. A good challenge and stunning 360 views at the top. Go just before sunset for incredible glowing sights.

The perfect lookout to see New Plymouth and mount Taranaki. The last part to reach the summit can be dangerous and is not recommendable if you don't feel good in height.

The track up was tougher than I expected, but was a fun adventure.

This is the last thing I saw before I left my hometown, this is definitely left a lasting memory that I will grow up to remember when ever I think about the place I used to live.

Amazing view for a bit of effort. It gets really steep and dangerous to the top but well worth the effort. There’s a steel chain for you to hold on for support on the way up or down. You can see almost the whole coastal front of New Plymouth and Mount Taranaki if the sky is clear.

Amazing view, stairs only half way up to the middle of the rock, the rest of the way you need to climb without stairs, with the chain to support for a bit of adventure if you are young, but I'm not suggest for the elder.

A great, steep climb with a really good view at the top. Watch out though, it's very steep rock with chains from half way up, and you have to be very careful. Wear shoes suitable for climbing rock. There are few places to easily pass, so could be queues at busy times.

100% recommend, amazing view and it's good fun to climb. Warning half of it is stairs but the other is using a chain to support your self. More difficult coming down. I don't recommend if you don't feel comfortable with having to use your hands to climb. Not challenging if you are. Takes around 30 minutes to go up and down. If you are lucky on a clear day you get a good view of the mountain.

Nice attraction in the New Plymouth area. The climb up is a little scary since there aren't any stairs on top. It's basically rock climbing. The way down is even worst. However, the experience is worth it. The view is nice and the breeze on top is great after the hike. The way up and down with a little rest on top should take you 45 minutes. Wear running shoes and appropriate workout clothes. Must be in some what of a good physical shape. Nice spot for pictures.

It has amazing views from the city and the coast. A must do if you're a tourist. The hike up is pretty steep and half of it has steps, the other half is just rocks. Is very popular and crowded during sunset.

Thought it would be a casual walk up the rock, but was surprised with a much more thrill filled hike. The view was great and though it was a bit scary on the way up, it was enjoyable. Good footwear is a must^^

Be careful when hike up the big rock, there is staircase-like steps to ease the hiking. Might not suitable for people who has Acrophobia. You can enjoy the Taranaki view during sunny day and the beautiful coastline. :)

It was packed with climbers today about mid afternoon. But everyone was patient and the climb and the view were as good as always. Highly recommended!

A beautiful spot to view and climb the mountain. Needs to be cared for in some parts with too much rubbish scattered. Other than that, it's a great view!

O - m - g! This is made up of steep steps, and the other half a steep cliff climb. Holy mother of Jesus. The steps were nothing compared to the near death defying climb to the summit with nothing but dusty hand rock holds and a chain to stop you from plummeting to your death but ummm it was worth it lol just wear some good shoes, and respct that some people are a little slower at going up or down because it IS f***ing scary so please be kind, and don't be a jerk.

Amazing views from the top but you really have to work for it. I’d recommend wearing closed shoes as you basically have to climb up a vertical rock face for half the journey. Definitely not for those with a fear of heights.

If you are brave enough to explore this steep hill using chains to support your climbing, you'll see an awesome view from the top.

Great 360 degree views of New Plymouth, Mount Taranaki and the sea. The first half of the ascent is by well made steps from the car park. The second half is a steeper rocky climb with chain handrail. Well worth the effort!

Scary climb to the top, but it is so worth it once you are up there. Just take your time and you will be fine. Lookout for other climbers.

Was awesome and beautiful, just half way stairs then a moderate climb if you have rock climbing experience, but doable since there is a chain to guide and support you up.

My couchsurfing hosts brought me here otherwise I probably wouldn't have visited it. It takes 15-20 minutes but I wouldn't do recommend it for someone with young children and or bad knees the last part is steep and you have to boulder scramble and use a metal chain to pull yourself up. The descent is slightly tricky as well. It gives nice views of the beach and the 2 small islands. 1 part is of massive factory complex with a tower full of asbestos so I am told so it gives 3/4 of a good view.

Beautiful area with glorious views. Lovely walk along the Back Beach behind. Stairway access from carpark at Paritutu end, but a wall along the beach brings you to a much easier beach access from the carpark there.

A windswept and wild beach at times, exciting in a thunderstorm and brilliant for dog walking. Also has gorgeous days, amazing sunsets and surfable waves!

Definitely was quite a steep climb, though lovely views on top. A bit nerve-wracking for sure.

Scenic climb on all fours up the rock. Could be challenging for some, but just hang on tightly to the chains and have solid footing. Amazing 360 deg views await at the summit!

A top place to visit with a nice walk

Fantastic view from the top. Not for the faint hearted, young kids, those with vertigo or if you are not reasonably fit. Worth it even if you only get half way up, to the top of the steps.

It's a pity that the Coastal Walkway doesn't quite get here, but nevertheless it's still a nice walk from the city. A great mini Mt Taranaki alternative when the weather prevents you from doing the real thing. The final rock and chain scramble provides a real taste of adventure.

The steps only go three quarters of the way, then it's rock the rest of the way up so wearing suitable footwear would be advisable.awesome views from all levels

Viewing point is about 15 minutes hike. Awesome panoramic view of New Plymouth.

Steep, wild and fun. With great views out to the tasman see and the sugarloaf islands. Also you get to look down on the old power plant which is quite and impressive structure. This trail is not great for the young kids.

Good 360° views of New Plymouth, Mt Taranaki, and the ocean. We watched a tug boat guide a big ship out of port. You'll enjoy the view more if you take your time going up. Also if you take something to stop the wind.

Fantastic view despite terrible weather most of the day. ... Will try to return in the sunshine. . With binoculars have been led to believe you can see rigs out on the horizon. . Couldn't see Taranaki / Egmont at all. .!!

Paritutu rock is a peak we climb every time we stay in New Plymouth. I have climbed it tens of times and will continue. Every time it is a challenge and offers great and changing views of NP, Back Beach and Mt Taranaki.
