Reviews of Tangiwai Memorial
S.
Very impressed with this memorial. Also has a lot of information regarding the event.
T.
Amazing and very moving. The train crash was well before my time but to see the site looking so tranquil today made it very poignant. Especially when a goods train rumbled across the bridge!
C.
I'm from Poland, but i watched many videos about this crash. I just can't believe that something like this happened in Christmas. I don't even want to know what the victims' families were thinking when they when they found out about the accident and the death of their loved one. Let us hope that such cases will not happen anymore.
[*]
H.
I wasn't expecting to come across this memorial on our journey. I knew about the tragedy and it was educational to be where it occurred.
M.
Excellent memorial, it is much better since the last time we called in to see it, lots of information about what happened etc, well worth visiting and I noticed there were toilets there too
M.
Moving tribute to a NZ tragedy. Well worth the stop, look, read, remember.
Tastefully presented.
J.
A historical place of one of New Zealand's worst tragedies and the worst Rail Accident in New Zealand. Recently have put new information boards up around the car park area that explains about the area and what happened. Every year on the 24th of December is a memorial service and is well worth attending. Definitely some history with this place
A.
Definitely definitely carve out time in your trip or drive - you have to visit this place!! It's free. Also it's an excellent, must know chapter of true NZ history. They have added toilets and sign posted a river/bush walk. They even have a piece of the wreck of the train. On a blue sky day when you stand with the "new" bridge and Ruahepu in the same view - it's very hard to imagine something so powerful and so far away, destroying as much as it did.
M.
A must visit on your way to the ski fields, great information, pictures. Take a short walk to the bridge. RIP to the 151 lost souls.
G.
Very poignant, we visited the day of the anniversary, Christmas Eve.
The memorial is very tasteful and sombre. We'll worth a stop-off.
S.
Such a terrible tragedy, but this monument is well done and pays homage to the victims and survivors. Very peaceful and spiritual stop, near the river
J.
Really well set out memorial site. Lots of information about the disaster and a nice memorial to those who perished.
G.
Sad place...great memorable. A sad part of New Zealands history
B.
A very touching memorial to a very sad event there are two paths to the bridge one is a easy one and is moderate difficulty but make sure you have appropriate shoes from the bridge you can see were the car's ended up the memorial itself names all 151 people that died it's well worth a stop
K.
Such a wonderful memorial with so much information to see and read and a walk to the site you have to do.
H.
Excellent site. Worthy of a visit. So tragic.
We need to remember the 151 lost lives
s.
Bigg buzz being here. Must have been traumatic for all those involved. Also for family and friends who lost loved ones. I had heard older people talking about it over the years and had read a book about the Tangiwai disaster so to be here meant alot. The natural environment with memorials presented in a meaningful way along with historic display boards made for very interesting reading.
m.
This memorial has improved no end. Now there are interpretation and information boards to explain what happened that fateful Christmas Eve. Definitely add this stop to your road trip

It is hard to describe how one feels entering this site.To put yourself in that moment on Xmas eve 1953 when a huge wall of water from Mt Ruapehu ferociously washed away train carriages and its unsuspecting passengers.
Reading the detailed information boards is sobering .
On site there are toilets.
RIP

A.
A tragic part of NZ Railway history.
Well documented with walkaround the area. 10:21pm 24th.12.1953.
As a 4yr old child i remember the time as my parents knew several members on that train. Traveling from both wgtn and palmerston nth enroute to Auckland , the young people going to a christian youthcamp in Ngarawhaia..they never made it. I can still see the face of my dad as he heard the radio news on christmas morning.
J.
Fabulous historical reference as part of what has shaped us as a community and landscape. Would not have wished the loss however. Moving.
