Reviews of National Army Museum
J.
Great Museum and well worth the visit - will be going back again as there was so much to see and take in. Really liked the way it was laid out, lots going on in each of the exhibits. Could explore the history of the Army and how it was formed, some great exhibits too.
Cafe and Gift shop are worth it, good prices and plenty to choose from. Food and drink nice too.
G.
Absolutely amazing and well laid out👏 Explains all wars in detail and picture's. Entry price really good and well worth it...a must must see and a great place to take the kids and learn the history 👍
s.
Very educational, displays put together very well, great array of products in the gift shop. Disappointed that there was no mention of the 21st Battalion, as my father served with it, but guess that is because of the display at the Auckland War Memorial Museum.
O.
Well worth a stop if you’re passing through, I recommend getting a guided tour, very informative everything, tidy build displays, friendly staff.
We‘ve also had a meal at the Cafe there food was great, we enjoyed their Potatoes a lot.
If you’re Gluten- free double check before ordering. Cheers
E.
The National Army Museum tell stories and good for kids to have knowledge about country warriors history.
Is open every day from 9 am to 4:30 pm and the prices good for everyone!
Also, you spends 1-1.5 hours in Museum and you can have a good memory photos outside and inside.
M.
Very nice place for a toddler whos interested in army, though we didnt had the chance to go inside byt still worth a visit.
N.
Always a great place to stop. After the long stretch that is the desert road, I always like to stop here for a freshen up. The kids always love the stop and a climb over the old tanks outside. The museum itself is absolutely stunning. A great stop for anyone interested in our involvement in battles or history in general.
E.
Excellent value for money. We’ve been before but came back since having kids and great to see new exhibits and a kids exploring area. Good combination of reading, hands on and audio visual exhibits. Well thought out plus a great cafe with excellent food.
M.
The Museum was really well presented and engaging. The Mess Tent Cafe had excellent coffee, food and service. The entry fee was a very reasonable $15 for adults. Highly Recommended!
G.
The best place for both young and old to learn about our history within wars. Stunning displays of nearly all aspects of our wartime history. I went there years ago when I was in the Cadets and long before some of the items were replaced with replica's. A great stop for anyone interested in our involvement in battles or history in general. Always a great place to stop after the long stretch that is the desert road.
M.
Easter Friday traveling to Wellington from South Aucklan, the museum was closed but I loved how we could still take photos of the tanks.
The photo is of my traveling partner my sister
D.
Thought it was going to be boring and old. Turned out to be really good. Very informative, well looked after and reasonably priced entry for a family. Kids dress up room was great for the little ones
I.
Really good display of our wartime history. Loved it all.
R.
Didn't have time to go around as it was closing when we got there but out side look Great
C.
So much to explore, very fulfilling.
D.
Awesome visit on history of New Zealand Army. Rich collection of army medals, weapons and uniform.
R.
Museum was shut but outdoor displays are always impressive.
J.
This is an amazing place! There is so many things to see but it is laid out in the best way. The kids loved the Kids HQ area and getting to dress up in army clothes.
S.
Staying comes with free security checks through the night. The staff are friendly & helpful & the Army Tent Cafe is to die for menu wise. Not a lot of selection of sweet food. Iced chocolate Very good value & the French toast... is just gobble & slurp good! Excellent value for money & competitive prices.
The museum gave me a two day pass as I had arrived later in the day. I was able to go through the next day & learn a lot more about the Anzacs & some Maori history as well. Excellent value & friendly helpful staff.
J.
Spectacular - we loved it but so much to see & read.
Brilliantly displayed & we can see the massive amount of time people have dedicated to presenting this wonderful museum for visitors to enjoy.
Cafe is a plus too with pleasant staff.
Jenny & Bruce Waihi Beach
G.
Very interesting place to visit...also sad when you see so much death.
Everyone should visit here to understand the price New Zealand has paid due to war and keeping the peace
S.
We had so much fun and although we only remained outside everything had so much information about each thing. Was great reading and fun and interesting looking over each item
R.
Probably my favorite meusuem I've ever been too been about 3 times now awesome displays and the full tour is definitely worth it though it is a huge museum can take over 3hrs and won't have looked at everything so I definitely suggest going multiple times.
V.
Beautiful place to learn about NZ army and it's achievements. Fantastically arranged musuem with options to either choose self guiding tour or professionally guided tour. Has a great cafe and lovely gift shop.
m.
Just wow, beautiful tribute to those who passed, and really interesting displays of history, makes you feel apart of it all. Definitely worth a visit
A.
Nice detailed exhibitions there
C.
Fantastic stop on the drive Auckland-Wellington! Totally worth the entrance fee.
Exhibitions were fantastic, as a Kiwi it made me proud to see everything so well presented. A great tribute and loving memory to those who have and still do make sacrifices for our freedom.
Spent 4 hours here and could have spent all day but needed to hit the road.
The gift shop was great, quality products and books. My bf and I were gifted Ponamu for Xmas and it was purchased here. The string on mine broke immediately-it wasn’t the right one for me. They made it very easy to exchange.
Food at the cafe was well priced and well made, 4 of us had a lunch on arrival and went back for snacks to take with us as we left.
Looking forward to going back, will make more time. Great photo opportunity at the cafe by the window with the mountain and flags in the background.
K.
Amazing museum always more to see. Wonderful experience we should know our history
H.
Flying to Wellington won't let you see this very important part of nz history.
Includes every war nz has participated in.
Documents the evolution of today's modern armed forces soldier from the two predominant cultures of the NZ civil war of the late 1800s.
M.
Awesome experience, beautiful displays .Highly recommend a visit here.
R.
Great place to walk around
P.
Stopped to use the EV charger and enjoy the displays and cafe. Got some cool gifts in the shop.
F.
We went into the museum and then went and played on the stuff outside. For us, a 5 year old girl and her dad, we found the museum a tad creepy but we really enjoyed playing on the tanks and stuff outside.
They had tried really hard inside with different activities for the kids and if your kids liked guns and stuff like that, I think they might like it more than we did. But it wasn't for us.
C.
Great motorhome parking for self contained vehicles. We went through the museum. Last time I went was maybe back in the 70s. Has an extension now. Displays are great. Very realistic. Not really a fan of any war but it's a part of our history. Saddest is the NZ wars. Shameful part of our history. Perhaps the museum should have portrayed Maori warriors more. Of course they are within the other wars but I didn't see anything about The Maori Battalions. I may have missed it as there was a lot. Didn't take inside pics so here is the view of the mountain.
M.
Fantastic museum, great history and learning experience, always amazes & educates, Nice Cafe Great coffee plenty of tables & chairs & excellent souvenir shop, plenty of parking & a wonderful area of New Zealand 🇳🇿
G.
Where do I start with is amazing & humbling museum.....as a WW2 collector this museum blew my mind full stop.
The exhibits run from the early Maori wars all the way to the present day conflicts.
They are thoughtfully presented & informative.
Exhibits are very well maintained & thought provoking. I’ve been to many military museums & so if the exhibits are very dated & are not accurate. This is not the case here, not one bit!
It was a treat to be able to touch many of the WW2 exhibits & to be able to take detailed photos.
The medal room is very humbling & to be honest beyond description.
Many interactive exhibits for the little ones & a well appointed cafe for taking a break over an L&P & a Mince n Cheese.
My friend & I struck up a conversation with one of the volunteers & gabbed about collecting & history for nearly 45 mins.
I recommend arriving early so you can have a few hrs to take it all in. There is so much to see you don’t want to rush it.
Also take some time to check out the reference library even if your not a student of history or a collector.
The drive from Taupo is well worth it. The scenery will leave you speechless.
Plenty of parking & the staff is very friendly & accommodating
The gift shop has something for everyone & budget.
Lest We Forget.
M.
Good value, well maintained.Cafe currently undergoing renovations, cant even buy softdrinks. Photo exhibition of Soldiers' Journey was my favourite.
J.
Great place with loads to see. Disappointed kids area was closed and got charged $20 for me and 3 year old. But will be going back. Don't drive past..a must see!
L.
National Army Museum, Waiouru, New Zealand
Honour the sacrifices, learn the campaigns, be inspired by the stories of courage, loyalty and comradeship.
Make a visit to New Zealand’s most comprehensive Army Museum for access to a unique collection of military exhibits, memorabilia and public research material. A place where families can seek out and relate to their military connections.
Open 7 days. 9.00am – 4.30pm. – (Closed Christmas Day)
We visited the museum on the way back to Wellington. The exhibits are very professional, with areas set aside to show the real life-like exhibits of all from the NZ wars, Boer War, WW1, WW2.
There is a cafe and souvenir shop in the complex as well.
B.
A truly awesome place to visit. Great to see our history of New Zealand. The Death ship was sad to see but factual about the 1918 flu pandemic.
Great place to stay in motorhome for the night .
J.
The Coolest Military Museum! We could have stayed All day but we had our dog in the campervan. Absolutely Nobody should drive past without going inside. It's a spectacular collection! Big ups to the curators of this incredible place! Thank you for a truly engaging and enlightening experience.
A.
If you haven't visited before then it is worth popping in for. If you are driving up/down the country it is also a good spot for a picnic if the weather permits. Kids (and adults) love the military vehicles on display out the front.
I.
A+++ for checking Vaccine Passes. Great museum, interesting exhibitions with lots of information and things to see. The pandemic exhibit was my favourite. Definitely recommend.
A.
Great museum which is close to the military training grounds. The place gives you the great idea of greatness of New Zealand army. They do have entry fee though and cafeteria to enjoy the time after the visit of the museum.
A.
An amazing facility showcasing the history of the nz army in all battles and wars across the world. So many rooms and diaoramas showing the situations soldiers were faced with and even interactive kids activities and even smells from what war time was like. A truly incredible museum. We spent 3 hours there taking our time reading everything could have spent longer. Fantastic cafe and gift shop too with a range of food drinks and items to purchase. would recommend this place to everyone young and old.
T.
My rating is more for the cafe than the museum. 😊☕😊.
However I did visit the museum a long time ago and it was fascinating. I suspect that it will be even better through improvements since I was there last.
G.
A great informative experience with well maintained interesting exhibits and good facilities. A must for those interested in military history .
S.
Always wanted to visit and didnt disappoint. The mess served amazing food and the staff were very bright and bubbly.

A.
Always a fantastic place to visit. Great themed cafe. Excellent displays, very photogenic tanks outside and of course great clean toilets
E.
This army museum has the right balance between size and exhibition items. Not an overload of info. It was pleasant to want over the various stand and reading about the various tasks and wars in which nz service men assisted. Good for a 1.5 hour tour.
N.
We stop over to take some photos its cool
C.
Great place for NZMCA, self contained vehicles to stay the night safely behind the Museum. For a donation, you have a security guard on duty after dark.
n.
I wish there was more. We need to do more to remember those who gave so much.
It has a basic gift shop, Cafe operating under restrictions but you can only do what you do.
Respect to all.
M.
Stopped for picnic lunch, was great. Used the facilities in the museum, vaccine passes were checked and masks encouraged - great to see!
H.
Definitely worth the stop. Something for all the family amongst the detailed and impressive displays which detail NZs Army history and present. Without doubt the greatest collection of New Zealand war memorabilia anywhere. From medals to tanks to uniforms to the stories of our soliders in overseas theaters of war. It would be possible to visit many times and see new and different things every time. Recommend!
S.
Such a cool place and one of my favorites since I was a kid and still as an adult visiting with my kids. A real precious place to visit to see our history and be proud of our contribution around the world. So worth the stop for all the family.
r.
Nice displays outside and fabulous collection inside. Allow 2hrs min to go through. Restaurant very nice and menu good value for money. Also they offer free overnight stay to self contained motorhome or caravan. Great views out to Mt Ruapehu.

Lots and lots of history some very good item with some great diorama show from the start of WW1 something l never seen done is in some of the exhibitions you can actually smell what it was like a military hospital 🤢and warm beer 🤭 and they have the coffin that held the body of the unknown soldier from France it is very moving
D.
Well worth a look. An interesting collection dating from the Mãori Wars. Lifesize models of soldiers, weaponry and vehicles. Also interactive area for children with play area, costumes etc.

T.
Had an awesome day with the famz thank you National Army Museum
J.
Good cuppa tea in the cafe. Gorgeous items for sale in the shop.
Easy to move around the exhibits with lots of information to read about each. Poignant and sombre honouring those who fought in every war NZers have been in as well as showing what their experience was like. Plenty to interest children including smells of gas and bacon.
Interesting special exhibition on Anne Frank and events leading up to her family hiding in the Annexe WW2
M.

E.
Great experience and very handy to be able to stay the night in our caravan at the rear of the building.
F.
Did the premium tour. The guide knew her stuff and the whole experience was fantastic
J.
Loved visiting with a couple of toddlers. They were given a sheet of objects to find which kept them entertained while we weaved our way through the exhibits and interesting stories. Excellent cafe too with some of the best hot chips I've had.

l.
Very well presented displays of New Zealand Army history dating back to the Maori Wars
S.
A must do ,kids love it an they were educated, very awesome experience..
K.
Was blown away by the new exhibit "The Death Ship" it was able to reference and relate to our current COVID-19 situation. The rest of the exhibits were also well done, two and a half hours and still missed some displays. And only read 1/5 of the info. Held the attention of 10 year old girl and 11 year old boy, we will be back.
C.
They have redone the layout of the museum exhibits from when we last visited 3 years ago. We loved it - our 3 school age boys enjoyed it immensley with an activity sheet that helps them discover their way around the museum. They especially loved the kids room at the top of the museum where they are all able to dress up in army gear with replica guns and a sand bag bunker.
S.
Great exhibitions and really informative about all the wars NZ has been involved in. Worth a visit.
I.
I'm not big into army stuff, but my uncle loves anything to do with the army. Took him there for a Christmas present and he absolutely loved the place and thought it was super cool. Great range of cool memorabilia from across the ages.
B.
The mess tent cafe was delicious.
That said, we placed our order first in our group, and we waited for 30 minutes for our food. During that time the other two orders in our group came and they were half way done and I thought I should go and inquire about our missing order.
When I mentioned I was waiting for order number 6, the lady went and asked the kitchen and they said they didn’t have an order number 6! Apparently they lost the ticket or it fell down and they didn’t notice. The front lady was polite enough but made it sound like if we didn’t want to wait we would be able to order food down the road. I politely said no, I want to wait since there isn’t much of an option and my kids were so hungry. They offered a side of chips for the trouble and our food came out 15 minutes later. The loaded chips we ordered were cold in the center and the cheese wasn’t melted but they were otherwise tasty. The rest of the food was great.
My sons ordered hot chocolates and they said it was the best they’ve ever had. That’s saying something since they’re hot chocolate connoisseurs lol.
Will be back to visit the museum next time we are in the area.
v.
It was better than I thought it would be and you can freedom camp over night aswell. Great.
G.
Great place to park up overnight.

More than just a museum, the on site library is useful for researching family history if you've got ancestors that served all the way back the the NZ Land Wars.
L.
We started our visit with an informative guided tour, then took several hours to read and see the really informative and visually appealing history of our soldiers. The display of medals is outstanding and indicative of the bravery and sacrifice that allows us to live our free lives today.
V.
My 3 year old loved this place. We loved that the staff were super friendly and very accommodating to our active child. The treasure hunt was his favourite thing
R.
Excellent museum that reminds us of the very significant contribution our NZDF personnel have made to allow us to live in a very privileged part of the world.
Having been at Waiouru in the early 1960's it was a great chance to reminisce.
Nice cafe as well.
D.
The National Army Museum Cafe is a regular stopping point on our way home from long trips. The cafe is great, it always is. The parking out back means I can park when towing the boat easily. Clean rest rooms. If you can checkout the museum. This place has it all.

Z.
Wonderful selection of memorabilia, lots of stories, very thought provoking
R.
Great experience. A must see for family
B.
Very interesting but so confusing where to go, working out the map hand out is difficult, if there were more directions in the museum itself would be so much more enjoyable and know you hadn't missed any of the wonderful displays
h.
Brilliant History of the Service Men & Woman that Put themselves On the Front Line for the Country & the People. ( Let's Not Forget )

An impressive historic record of NZ's presence in conflicts past and present.
Not as interactive as the likes of Te Papa, but lots of detail of you have time to look through the impressive displays of military memorabilia to help relive the horrors from each conflict. Some very touching life stories of those who served.
Younger kids will probably just rush madly about on the treasure hunt.
m.
Very good exhibition, informative and good story telling. Good stopping enroute to Palmerston North
A.
Reasonal entry fee. The art display makes u feel like u've actually been transported to a different era. A lot of effort exerted in the y the team at the museum and it shows. Enjoy
N.
Great place to visit on any day, we made a great choice going on a stormy day. Nice toilets, nice café and shop, once inside the main part of the museum it was clean and lighting suited the displays. We spent around 6 hours Inc coffee break and we didn't read all the information. Great displays some quite humbling. You will not be disappointed but the must be interested in the first place. Thanks for a great day out.
M.
A great exhibition. Interesting and well laid out. Portable stools available should anyone need to rest while walking around the exhibits. Good facilities and well worth the visit to appreciate what happened during the various conflicts in which New Zealanders have been involved.
A.
We were there charging our car when it was closing for the day, so didn't go inside.
K.
Was a pretty cool place to visit :)
M.
Can't wait for the cafe to open a welcome respite travelling north or south state highway 1
R.
Always stop here to have a rest & a walk around these tanks
C.
Its a good museum has alot of great things like the medal room and the world war sections. The sherman is an exceptional thing. The guides ate very nice and helpful. Would go here again.
A.
Great place to see some of NZs armed forces history great layout. Kids will enjoy climbing on the tanks outside.
V.
Brilliant Museum. Heart stirring.
m.
Great place and amazing stories.brave brave men
k.
We found it very interesting, our teenagers really enjoyed it and asked lots of questions.
J.
Great set up with the Mess Tent. Looks awesome.
P.
Had a full-on guided experience. The guide was knowledgeable and thorough. 1 hour tour ended up taking 2 1/2 hrs. Weapons aren't my gig so could have skipped through more quickly and avoided the sore feet.
O.
Very friendly staff, Cafe was lovely too.
A.
Great stop over, kids loved it and learnt lots while having fun!
C.
God defend our free land !
E.
Lots of great information and a surprisingly large range of historical items compared to when I went there as a kid. Obviously a lot of work has been put into it.
T.
We really enjoyed the Army museum, VERY MOVING PLACE. We also ENJOYED a beautifully prepared all day breakfast at The 'Rusty cafe', wonderful, friendly hostess.
R.
Excellent museum. Recommended to visit when passing through Waiouru.
J.
Great place to stop for a rest on your long journey
s.
Went passed this place not went I. But a good place to visit
P.
Awesome place to stop for a break, very well presented exhibits telling the history of NZ army. Very nice attached restaurant with great staff and food. Spotless rest rooms. Great place to stop mid point between Auckland and Wellington.
J.
Is such a great place to stop on any trip. Nice top notch environs with toilets etc and lovely home cooked food. And a lovely gift shop. Well worth a visit.
N.
Loved the visit there. Priced well for all the knowledge that the museum holds. Enjoyed learning more about the history of NZ and what has gone on. Lovely little area for kids.
C.
Awesome exhibit to break a dull dreary drive through waiouru
A.
Great place, so much info and pitched so well to interest kids to adults. My son especially loves the special kids area. We could have spent hours more there! Great gift shop too with all sorts of different things and not crazy prices for a museum gift shop. Definitely worth a trip. Cafe too so you can make a whole day of it!
K.
Comprehensive history of pre and post European military activity of New Zealand.
I was keen to learn about the Moari Wars which preceded European contact.
H.
National Army Museum on Desert Road SH 1. Museum, shop, cafe and toilets facility. Lest we forget.
Now due to Covid 19 level, the gate from the back parking area is closed.
M.
A must see for all NZr's. Really helpful staff. Didnt use the cafe but it looked very nice. We stayed overnight in our campervan in the back carpark. Thank you for making this available for a donation.
c.
Cool place to check out. Needed more time, so much to see! Lovely helpful staff - we had to leave our back pack at the reception and completely forgot it! They were so helpful and even arranged to courier it back to the South Island! Thanks guys
J.
Great parking overnight for motorhomes.
Excellent museum for every age
Nice Cafe
E.
Awesome place lots to see friendly staff nice fresh air but miss the snow.
K.
Great Museum, enjoyed it very much 😀
K.
As they say on the roadside advertising boards heading into Waiouru ' History without the boring stuff' the museum is a very interesting place to visit. PS try the Loaded Bootlace fries at the café... Just saying ☺
M.
Very moden interior with old memorabilia. COOL... Makes the realization of what our grandparents had to go through for our freedom very heartfelt. The cafe's tent partition is awesome.
Q.
Did not enter the museum part, however, their cafe is pretty good. The gift shop is well stocked, not too cluttered either with good pricing
L.
Time to stop & look what a well life like place,so real to look at.
r.
Great Cafe to stop by on your journey.
K.
Excellent museum to visit. Well laid out and informative. Allow yourself a minimum of two hours to really take it all in. Very good cafe and gift shop attached. Would recommend for all ages.
A.
Fantastic stop break for weary travelers. The museum has a fantastic Cafe and the staff a very welcoming. The food and drinks are amazing.
K.
A must visit, even the Cafe was good
D.
Interesting museum to visit. There is a wonderful collection of weapons through the centuries. The constant recorded reading of the names of all the Forces personnel who lost their lives in the service of their country brought tears to my eyes. Lest we forget.
X.
Well set out excellent displays great time had i hope we never have to witness war like those who paid a heavy price for us all
Z.
Great place the mess tent cafe was lovely
B.
Arrived to Park at the rear and stay the night in our self contained caravan. Were intending to take a tour of the museum but visitors queued out the door. So decided to move on elsewhere.
M.
Fantastic history takes you there, the smell, the voices, the feels❤️ can't wait to see the new part of the museum about the ship of death.
I.
Great experience definitely worth the stop
B.
Better than I expected. Lots of interesting displays and nicely arranged. Downside is that they close the kids area 45 minutes before the rest of the museum but don't tell you this when you're paying (or anywhere else for that matter), plus they force you to exit through the gift shop even though the main entrance is closer to the rest of the museum hoping that you'll spend more on overpriced trinkets.
D.
Fantastic place well worth the visit while passing through. The kids get a activity pack of which they enjoyed doing. Very well layed out looks small from the outside but opens up into a series of rooms and logical route to follow. Staff are very helpful and happy and passionate about there job. Parking is not a problem loads. Gift shop and cafe are reasonably priced.
D.
We did not get to see it all as it was a quick stop, but clean and friendly helpful staff would go back when have more time
B.
Very nice food at the cafe, with great seating and views. Staff cared about presentation. The banana cake was very nice.
J.
We visited the museum during the last school holidays. Unfortunately, we didn't know it was the school holidays until we were inside. While it's good to see children visiting the museum we prefer to visit when it's more quiet. We did look around and intend on returning to view again.
At that time we noticed they had a cafe, so when we were next passing through we called in for a coffee. This time it was more quiet. We had a great coffee, however there was a minimal food selection as the kitchen was closed. Next time we visit the museum we will also visit the cafe.
P.
If you are interested in the army and works war 1 and 2 this is a great place to visit. It has a good collection of fire arms and vehicles to look at. The cafe is being renovated at the moment so only limited drinks available.
K.
Fantastic place, bigger than it looks on the inside. Amazing artifacts, huge range of artillery and the drawers full of medals where out of this world.
k.
I don't think I've ever driven past here without stopping. It's a perfect resting stop. The museum and gift shop is pretty cool too.
M.
I love this place and it's great memorial to our soldiers past and present... The medal room was amazing ... Exciting to see there a couple new rooms under construction.... And in my view it is great bang for your buck not expensive at all comparable to other attractions... Hope it not another twenty years between next visit.. much respect and thank you for great day.....
P.
Very interesting museum, great exhibits, a lot more than we were expecting.
Only stopped to charge the car, but what a pleasant surprise.
S.
We had an awesome time! Great place to take the kids and adults. Love coming to see the Army museum, its always a great experience.
W.
Great, freedom camp stop over for vans with self containment stickers
T.
Had a great time very interesting good displays lots of old tanks a other stuff good cafe friendly staff
B.
The military display is amazing, the gift shop is also really cool. Would love to go again.
A.
Great Museum with particular interest if you have returned service people in your family. Was great seeing a Quad truck close up that my father drove for 4 years through North Africa and Italy.
S.
Awesome, too much to absorb in one visit
D.
Great place to overnight in a self contained Motorhome
A.
Nice halfway stop between Hamilton and Wellington
G.
Good place to visit. National pride.
Looks great when it snows.
Great for a days drive from Wellington.
V.
Awesome
D.
An awesome place. We'll worth a visit and the Cafe was great too! Lovely people as well...
Q.
From outside the army museum looks very interesting, it only costs about 15 dollars to go in, the staff at the entrance was very friendly and quick to assist us. There are quite a few things on display too. The cafe and gift shop is free to go to, the prices at the gift shop is affordable with a reasonable amount of stuff to buy. The cafe coffee has improved and the croissants are lovely. Worth a visit if you are passing by
T.
Good museum. Good historical content and range of weapons. Reasonably affordable and a good place to stop if travelling up from Wellington or Palmerston North. Content hasn't changed much since I visited 10 years ago. I think this is the kind of place you only need visit once.
B.
Very well presented and a credit to the NZ Army
A.
Just a fantastic museum that every New Zealander should visit at some point.
Incredible displays and very knowledgeable staff to assist with guided tours
L.
Stopped here on our trip between Taupo and Wellington. Whole family enjoyed the museum, and the Cafe was good value for money with a decent selection of gluten free options.
J.
Amazing collection of exhibits, knowledgeable staff, cafe staff super helpful friendly and efficient. Foods a bit expensive but great day out for families, couples or tourists. 5 stars
J.
A lot of interesting displays. I had had heard of the New Zealand Wars, but knew nothing about them. The displays provided amazing insight into the wars, without bias to either side. Fascinating!
s.
Lovely setup the kids enjoyed it running around finding all the things in the worksheet and the older one the stamps also. Would be cool if there was some buttons for sounds guns, canons, tanks and lights kids could press. The boys loved the little hidden spot where they could look and see the photos by turn the handle, picking up phones to listen, so a few more of these things be great. The other thing i like was the kids room, it would be really cool if they could ad a table to set up like a battle field for the kids to see and play with maybe.
O.
So much history. Good display with much of interest.
E.
Such an awesome place to visit with the family! Some really cool exhibitions and history on display!
M.
So emotionally draining. Well worth visiting.
Could spend hours here.
Gold card discounts.
So well managed and maintained.
Thank you for the opportunity to visit.
D.
Quick stop on the way through desert rd
S.
Great to see the changes that now allow interaction with displays making the whole experience like Te Papas Gallolipi . Shame the mess tent wasn't open on a Sunday though, the only downfall
K.
What a great museum! We got to see so much Army history, and they even have a nice activity for the kids to do while going around the museum. The coffee shop was also pretty good for those who couldn't walk too much.
G.
Very educational and the coffee is great
P.
Super tidy and we'll presented exhibits. Has recently undergone a renovation and is much smarter.
P.
Boy did the kids love this! You can climb on all the outside tanks and APCs (encouraged to even!). We didn't have enough time to look around inside but we were able to see the well stocked gift shop and lovely cafe inside. We will come back for a good explore inside someday, but if you are only passing through then stop for 10mins and let the kids and dads jump all over the massive guns.
Can walk to some nice takeaways from here, too.
P.
Great place to visit and good coffee
R.
Amazing place. A huge amount to look at and interact with. If you have a great interest in NZ's involvement in various wars you'll love the Army museum. Well laid out, a good amount of vehicles, real-scale scenes and dioramas to view and interact with. To get the most out of your visit I'd recommend a minimum of 2 hours and probably ideally 4.
H.
We haven't visited for awhile and boy it was worth it. Started off with some lunch in their cafe, delicious food and then museum. Excellent. Certainly recommend visiting.
M.
Good museum, been a number of times while on the way home (Wellington) from other trips. This time they are having a bit of work done so a few bits are closed. Look forward to next time see what the upgrades being.
D.
Great place. Loves it!
L.
A great attraction for people wanting a quick stop on their journey North or South. Plenty to see, and fun for the kids even if you don't go inside - the tanks outside are for climbing on and are a favorite.
M.
I went with my grandchildren and they thoroughly enjoyed it especially the room where they could interact and dress up in uniform
G.
Worth stopping
Even if its just for a scone
P.
Love the detail in the exhibits and the constantly changing exhibits. New Cafe well worth a visit.
J.
Visiting the army museum is a great experience. There is a lot to see and digest with exhibits covering all the different theatres of war where NZ troops have served. The changing exhibits are particularly good. Allow plenty of time as there is a lot to see. In fact maybe divide up your visit to see some of the museum another time. The story of the Unknown Warrior was especially moving.
R.
Great food and service at the restaurant
A.
Amazing museum. I remember coming here as a child and really enjoying it. I brought my children to the museum because they're obsessed with tanks. They really enjoyed learning about our history and the exhibits helped give a visual representation of what it was like during wartime. I highly recommend visiting this museum. It is a valuable experience.
There are toilets, souvenir shop and a cafe at the museum.
J.
A must see for any Military enthusiast or history buff. This is not a huge Museum but its high quality and give a real insight into New Zealand history. The displays are very good and you get a feel for what it was like "Over There"
T.
Awesum place...been past many times but only the 2nd time we stopped and really enjoyed our visit to the museum..1st was after the earthquake.
Informative..friendly and welcoming. Will come again.
R.
Really great displays, Anne Frank exhibition that was on while I was there was especially good. Be aware that the entry and exit are separate. If you need to go back out to you car for anything you can't go back out the way you came. No biggie, just something to be aware of. There's so much in here. Easily spend hours. There are folding chairs at chair stations throughout so if you get museum tired then those are available (with a 110kg weight limit).
l.
If you can, stop in here to gain an insight of the rich history of not only early New Zealand battles, but conflights from around the world. The spirit of lost soldiers permeates these walls and gives you a sense of their pride and takes you on a vivid journey of their stories through their eyes. Well worth the experience.
m.
Fantastic a must see history of nz. In a simply beautiful location
G.
Was a great place to charge up my Nissan leaf electric car I changed it once on the way to Rotorua and once on the way back. So far I have saved $500 on fuel.
J.
Food grest and service was too..
J.
After a coffee and cake we visited the army museum. The were quite a lot of changes sine a year ago. Recommended visit.
P.
This was an absolute pleasure to view all the military equipment and setups as if you were there part of it all. It was so much like real life with all the action happening around you just felt so real. Wow! I really loved my visit. The gift shop was good too. Great choice of momentoes to take home. My grandson was with me and absolutely loved it all. Well done Waiuru.
L.
Its been 25 years since I last visited, it is definitely well worth spending the time looking around. Awesome 👌
L.
Good place to learn about history of war in nz
G.
Best place to stop in Waiouru if you need a break from the car. Cafes ok but it's best asset is the space inside the building to stretch the legs (especially if it's raining. Also really like the fence between the car park and the road if you're traveling with kids and animals
D.
Classic Kiwi experience. Understated, well done, loved by its curators. NZ has a chequered military history, but NZ's modern military is much easier to admire than that of any other country.
A.
Great place for family. We visited on the way to Taupo and my son loved this place so much that we had to stop agsin on the way back. They have awesome play area were you can dress up in various military outfits. So much fun.
V.
Stopped in carpark for lunch! Children having fun on the army vehicles. People happy. Coffee not far away. Good view of the mountain. Great!!!!!
S.
A respectful and honouring place which recognises all those who have served in Aotearoa New Zealand's àrmed services.
A worthwhile visit.
D.
What an amazing place. I'd never been before but had driven past a couple if times over the years. The tanks outside surrounding the building give you a clue that your in for some special moments once inside. From the early Maori wars right through the 1st and 2nd world wars to today you get to see how New Zealand has stepped forward when needed or called upon. We stopped probably half way through for a break in the lovely tea room like cafe. I had an old fashioned scone with cream and Jam and what a blast from the past that was. All in all a wonderful place to visit and reflect upon our little nation
R.
Excellent displays, good detail and storytelling. Very moving, and well done.
G.
I just do the cafe coffee stop while charging. Becoming a regular. Should visit the museum one day to see if add the extra Star...
C.
Really good place. Well set out and great to visit on trip. Good cafe and shop too.
K.
Awesome!!! Great collection and lots to learn
V.
Found it most interesting, enjoyed it.
D.
Great place to stop during a long drive on state Highway 1. Lots of educational options and you can learn about New Zealand's involvement in all its wars. A big plus is a decent kids area, plus tanks and such which kids can clamber over. For a real treat, hit the cafe and try out the pancakes with banana and bacon. Yum!
J.
Very well done, great place for the history lesson, make sure you have time to take it all in.
T.
Paid entry to the museum. Is a nice place to visit on the way up north if you have time to spare. There is a cafe inside if you are needing something to eat or drink. If you do not want to go inside, there are some military machinary on display outside with information boards to tell you some stuff about the display.
A.
Great welcome and good information. Food and service very good. Worth stopping there and spending time to look at our history.
K.
Just wanting to give a shout out to Rayna and the guided tour we participated in (still in trial ~ shouldnt be, we loved it). A wealth of knowledge, we learned so much more listening to her tell tales about the war and the exhibits than we would have got wandering around by ourselves. I really hope the guided tours will become a permanent part of what the museum offers and Rayna one of the main guides.
Also enjoyed the Anna Frank exhibit and got brilliant coffee at the cafe. Well done team 👍👍
B.
Fantastic museum! I have driven past it hundereds of times (like many kiwis I guess!) Well worth the visit. The back half of the museum is old school but the exhibits are great.. everything is layed out in chronological order. Great little kids area where they can dress up in army gears
L.
Excellent, and very interesting for children, which I believe if you want them to learn all about history and wars and why they were fought,it MUST be made interesting, and dragging my 10 year old Granddaughter and 8 year old Grandson told me that they obviously found it interesting and they also asked lots of questions, so all in all a very positive visit. Thank you 😁
N.
Well laid out museum. Great kids room and good museum kid activities. Kids can try on different outfits and hats. Lots of great information. Lots of great displays. My kids said the displays look like there are real people in them. That being said, wars are not an activity where everyone has a happy story to tell, so there are lots of sad stories to learn about here.
g.
Always a great place to park up for the night. The museum is worth a visit too. If you don't want to cook dinner there are good food outlets in walking distance nearby.
K.
I've never really entered this museum but I like taking photos of the tanks etc
W.
Picked the key up from museum shop for takino ski field 4x4 trip in the morning then back museum, for the afternoon, they have done something really special here, WOW
t.
aloow plenty of time so much to see and read
P.
I was driving down to Ohakune from Taupo with my Son and stop here he had so much fun and loved it.
F.
Lots to see, good info, interesting history
E.
Great place to learn about the history of the wars NZ has been a part of. The front counter person was so lovely and made us feel very welcome
p.
Beautiful displays.
Great bit of history.
M.
One of my most favourite places in NZ💖 I am a NZ Army Veteran and I'm super proud of the wonderful mahi the Museum staff have done with the displays and whole experience. Well worth a visit!
A.
Love this place friendly staff and a great place to stop so kids can play on the tanks and I can look and buy something in the gift shop
M.
Never been there before and was very moved by the sobering messages, visuals and memorabilia. Thoroughly recommend to all.
A.
A place that makes you both glad and sad to be Human. They strike a good balance so individual strength and bravery is celebrated even if the conflicts the people were involved in were utterly bonkers but they don't glorify war. And the cafe is really good. So if you are in need of a good sit down and a cup of coffee head there. If you have imagination or empathy, you'll need a pick me up after the 1st World War exhibits.....
B.
Excellent exhibition. A very appropriate reminder off the sacrifices made for our freedom. Lovely café inside the museum. A good place to break one's journey, and there is a charge station at the museum.
J.
I find the slogan 'without the boring stuff' a problem. I mean, seriously? I don't think that's gonna make people interested in army/war at all. To let them think it is actually boring.
M.
Definitely worth a visit. We'll laid out. Good food available at the Cafe. Awesome coffee.
I.
Great local museum.
B.
Interesting range of items. Further reaching than the Auckland Museum in military history. Looking forward to a return visit.
S.
Great displays, helpful staff and delish food and coffee in the cafe
R.
Pretty fancy gun collection.
A.
Really glad we stopped, much larger than it looks
Highly recommend for a visit
D.
Children enjoyed collecting medal stamps and dressing up in uniform
T.
Really really interesting.
Cool place.
M.
The ultimate curled wedges served in the Cafe is worth returning for again and again. And for only $9.5!
K.
Really awesome museum kids loved it, definitely worth checking out on state highway 1 during your travels, lest we forget.
L.
This place is amazing. From the Anne Frank display (temporary) to the mannequins displaying life in the field, the stories of the many wars brought to life and the people lost and saved -- it's a most impressive museum.
R.
Place was very informative and child friendly. We would definitely go back.
W.
It is okay with in depth descriptions of every bits of history. It is not for young kids though unless if the kids are into armies, guns and wars. I think kids aged 10 plus will be fine.
S.
An incredible place to visit and one that never gets boring.
The displays are continually changed and there is always something new to look at.
It also has a reference library that is open to the public which can be an absolute life saver to those who are researching things of military nature.
A.
Lots of good displays, covering most of New Zealands military history. Also interesting stuff about the war at home. Entertaining and educational for adults and children, though small children are disappointed that they can't sit on and touch some of the displays.
M.
A well laid out museum that doesn't leave much to the imagination. This place is a mid way meeting point for our family to swap over kids. Great food and clean toilets before we head on our way again.
P.
Fantastic displays. Tea rooms nice clean and fresh and light. Museum worth the visit. Highly recommend
F.
So much history here, a great place to stop and take in.
T.
Excellent place informative.
R.
Always a good visit. The amount of history on display is staggering. Unfortunately the current building is too small to house and show more of the historical gems in their possession. There are more priceless historical objects tucked away in odd corners of Waiouru Military Camp.
F.
Awesome place. Lots to learn and see
R.
We came because the museum allow you to camp in a SCV. You'll even have a super friendly security guard to keep you safe! We visited the museum in the morning and its good. Nice little cafe too!
t.
Amazing place, sorry we didn't have more time to spend there.
M.
Had a great stop spent two hours looking at different conflicts in the world. Enjoyed the lunch that we ordered from the café also felt refreshed for our trip back to Wellington. We did some research on family history and found all the staff could not be more helpful with our visit.
N.
Has been extended since last visit with more exhibits. There's a charge to enter museum but I think it's worth it, cost my two girls and myself $25.
S.
Three hours just disappeared. Wonderful experience and so well presented. Helpful friendly staff. Could easily spend another three hours there.
A.
We pass by this place on our way to Wellington. It's still early so we were not able to gi inside the museum. The display outside is quite appealing, how much more is the content inside!
J.
Excellent .. throughly enjoyed the guided tour .. just a pity it was not longer.
L.
Very cool
A.
Enjoyed our visit here. Cafe was very busy and took a long time to be served. Interesting place especially for the kids.
T.
Awesome place to go even after the 20th-ish time ive been.
J.
We stopped here as a break between Auckland & Wellington. Great place for the kids to explore - even without going in. They can climb on the tanks outside, good views of the mountains.
S.
Poignant, emotive, inspirational, the museum is an incredible record of New Zealand's army history, its difficult to walk through and come out unchanged.
B.
A must see place for kids. Experience of a soldier lifestyle at the war front!
Plus they got a huge collection of original war medals as well.
H.
Fantastic displays. Very educational. Children thoroughly enjoyed rhe day as well. All staff very helpfull
J.
Was only able to see the out side display as didnt have the time to really stop. But hope to go back soon. They have over 50 vehicles that drive still
A.
Very interesting. Great displays. Awesome gift shop. Very friendly staff. Fantastic collection of medals.
E.
Excellent place. Was a bit worried with kids but they had activities like a scavenger hunt which made it fun for them
Z.
Amazing, awesome tanks out front of the museum and even more awesome pieces inside the museum. If you're going past here, definitely a stop and must see!
J.
Went there to stay in Moterhome overnight. Didn't seem that safe and you have to park on the grass.a bit wet may get stuck.
S.
Exhibits and museum are really well done. Reasonable ticket price, good value cafe.
J.
Great place to stop and break up a long journey. Really interesting museum
G.
A really great museum. I love the Gallipoli display and spent most of my time there. I'll have to come back again as I am only halfway through after a few hours.
B.
Had Breakfast there but needs to be hotter there also should have been a discount on the menu board for service members
B.
Good informative displays. Allow1- 2hrs to fully see and read all the information on display. Staff very helpful and knowledgeable.
J.
As an ex service man I am still humbled and proud of NZers involvement in so many conflicts. We certainly punch above our weight
S.
An absolute must-stop!!! So much history, beautifully displayed. Spent hours in there. Nice cafe too!
L.
Wow !!! So interesting, informative and very well set out.. had meal at Cafe great selection and staff 👍
S.
nice museum, recommended
P.
Very good have stopped there lots on our way through always enjoy a coffee there so many over seas tourists seem to think the toilets close by are for their use but they all have sc stickers on their people carrier
M.
Great place to visit. Exceptional value with outstanding displays. Well done to all those involved.
M.
Worth having a look but to be honest it's looking a bit tired. After seeing the 2 Gallipoli displays in Wellington that Peter Jackson did and then seeing this you can see that it is in need of some work. That said there is a lot here and interesting.
D.
Great family rate, exhibits are very open and well displayed. All in all a very interesting place to visit
K.
World class museum. They had way more there than I expected. Well worth seeing.
K.
Really helpful staff and interesting displays. If you have an interest in the history of NZDF then the librarian is very helpful as well and the library is worth a visit.
S.
The place is look fantastic. Full of info and knowledge which was fun and eventful for the whole family.
D.
Great place to stop at on your travels. Good cafe as well!
N.
I can recommend the National Army Museum at Waiouru. Friendly staff, interesting NZ Army history, nice Cafe and a great place to stop-over on your travels...North or South.
J.
Great place with lot's of display of NZ armed forces services over the years in action.
S.
I'm not particularly interested in military history but this place is a gem. Well priced. Modern layout with lots of artefacts and information.
A.
I really enjoyed the museum. If you are in the area it's a must do at least once. I didn't try their cafe but it was very business and it looked great.
J.
Awesome history of world War 1 and 2 just watch the guy with the uniforms exhibition lol he talks when u walk past him hahaha
J.
A fantastic museum! Well worth a visit!
L.
Good well kept museum. A bit on the small side but the woman exhibition at the start is a very unique feature with a lot of uncommon stories being told
A.
It was an amazing museum with very intricate displays. There was a lot I learned visiting and definately a recommendation from me.
J.
$15 Adults at the moment.... $5 kids. Can't wait to go in soon hopefully. If your interested in our Military History, then I would drop in!
Y.
A good stop over if you're driving through Waiouru. The museum will take about an hour to explore.

Always an excellent experience, I feel it is important that every New Zealander stops to visit at least once; to get a sense of what the NZDF has acheived. The exhibits are put together at a world class standard.

This visit was emotional firstly the unknown soldier display & unlike the first time we visited the museum was more meaningful as our son has just joined the Army. Our family could not be more proud. For God, For Queen & For Country AUE, Ake, Ake, Kia kaha e!

A sobering place to visit for people who don't understand the gravity of the wars New Zealand has been involved in over the last 200 years.

Took a group of Scouts through this morning. Helpful with task sheets and a guide came out to talk to them as well with the unknown soldier. Good coffee and clean restrooms
