For a 10 dollar entry on the way back to Wellington from Palmy , how could it not be worth while, the steam engines was the highlight plus the ride in trams and trains.
I hadn't been to the historic place for nearly 20 years, but from the time I entered until the time I left, I thoroughly enjoyed myself. There must be about 35 different exhibits, including working steam trains, trams, & trolley buses, Edwardian houses & shops, model trains in diorama, the largest display of old fire engines, aeroplanes from my childhood and before, and so much more. We were invited to take high tea & enjoy a show in a period theatrette - quite enchanting, then wander past quaint bantams & a feisty rooster.
We have enjoyed the static train & tram rides, We were there for about 4 hours and managed to get around everything. Best to bring lunch - plenty of areas to picnic in. Cameras are a must, and comfortable shoes. Not good in wet or cold weather though.

What a wonderful place! Note that it's only open by appointment, so please call ahead. It's also not expensive ($10 for adults and $5 for kids.)
The host is a lovely lady who put this collection together with her husband over 40+ years. The machines, of which there are many, are in great condition and are a testament to NZ engineering.
If you're someone who appreciates mechanics and history, this museum is a must see.

Would highly recommend a visit.
Call first as not normally open to public.
The guy in charge has only been there about 4 years and is doing the best he can, to maintain what was started by the original owner
He needs help.
