An amazing treasure. You need to do this. There's a fairly steep walk down to the Boulders after walking through farm land and of course the same steep walk up on the return. But it's all really worth it. Picnic tables and flushing toilets at the site. A million dollar experience for the $5.00 entry fee. A must do. About 40mins walk in and again to walk out.

Well, I discovered these on a map 5 yrs ago, but found they had a substantial steep walk down to them. After Covid rules forbade visiting, I decided after 2 yrs of lockup, we would take the first opportunity to venture down there. On the 27th December, 2021, we pack a small picnic lunch & drinks, & so to Ohingaiti we go. After a 1hr drive, found the turnoff just north of the town, off SH1, then left onto PEKA RD, which is a Grade 1 gravel road in good condition.
Well -adventure, daring, intrepid, absolutely does describe it succinctly ! For 2 , overweight, relatively unfit 70+ yr olds, it became a life threatening challenge !
From the recommended carpark, off PEKA Rd, & DONATION ? box ($5/ea.) It is a walk across flat farmland, through gates, then down a 30-40* sloped gravel road cut into the hillside to the river level. I guess it is a 100-150m drop in a distance of about 2.5Km.Took about 25 mins. Hard on the knees & it was also a 24* day, but cloudy overhead. We took it slowly in about 100m tranches, had a rest, then plodded on . When we reached the river flats it was a 500m flat walk to the hidden valley where the boulders hide away in a LOST WORLD of their own ! ABSOLUTELY MAGICAL & ETHEREAL ! There is a good DOC ?, explanation board ,with phone numbers, if you have a problem getting back. BUT NOT AT THE START !!! WE were passed by a 4WD SUV when going down. Not sure if permission was granted by landowner, which id necessary as the land is a working farm.
We had a sandwich lunch with us which was able to be enjoyed at a TABLE & Chairs amongst the geological splendour of this ancient geomorphic wonderland ! A swim is easily possible if you are inclined, and toilets are provided by the picnic table at the first gateway at the Boulder Park entrance at Rangitikei River level. Truly worth the effort !
However, but , and anyhow , you now have to drag your hurting, but refreshed body back up a steep climb to your vehicle ! That is the rub, Again we took it slowly, and the return took about 40min at a snails pace !
BUT WORTH EVERY ACHE & 2 DAYS OF PAIN ! See my photos also. Give it a go, and enjoy the solace & wonder of how these natural entities formed some 700, 000 years ago ! !

Magical spot. Lucky as I had it all to myself. Had great weather but I imagine it would look it’s best after some rain on a foggy morning. Takes 20 plus minutes to walk to the boulders and slightly more walking back up but the views are worth it. Is well preserved by the surrounding land owners so worth the $5 donation at the honesty box at the car park. Highly recommend.

Parking location is at the very end of Peka Rd (it's signposted). $5 donation per person over 12yrs in an honesty box. Took about 30 mins to walk the 1.8km downhill to the boulders. There is a toilet available near the boulders but not at the start of the walk. Enjoyed the views as we walked across farmland. Great formations here. The kids loved climbing on and around the boulders. The walk back up to the car park was a bit tough so a reasonable level of fitness is required.

I've been here a couple of times now. Much easier to find now that the google map has been updated. Off the beaten track but well worth the visit and the entrance fee. If your not of able to body to walk the track then you can pre-book with owners for a ride. If your going there for photography don't forget your tripod and expect to spend many hours capturing the impressive landscape that changes though the seasons. Absolutely lovely hosts who went out of their way to create a romantic morning tea in the midst of the boulders for the couple I was photographing.

The place was not very accessible, but place like this usually has its wonders. True it is. It's a land of Trolls in the movie 'Frozen'. Beautiful and magical place to visit. The way back can be challenging, but my 9yo and 6yo managed it.

Well worth the drive and walk. Unique experience. Totally recommend it. We went with four adults and four children aged 5-9 and all loved it. And it was raining.

Magical hidden place, from the carpark it’s a 25 min walk in between the hills. Absolutely recommend!

Ok if you're young and fit. A long track down but hard yakker coming back up. But I'm 71. And it was very warm.

Wouldn't have known about this interesting little gem, if it weren't for friends. Love that the farmer has opened it up to the public. Steep walk down along the farm tracks, some would find it hard going heading back. Took our 2.8 year old & he managed 3/4 of the walk. Boulders are an interesting attraction, worth visiting. If its warmer weather, ensure to take lots of water.

A wonderful place to visit. Beautiful and fascinating formations and trees. Be prepared for a long, winding gravel road (Peka) , take it slow and keep going after you begin to doubt .
Pass a working sheep & cattle farm and steep overlooks to the river. Through a gate and finally, the parking lot has only a shed ( sign in and donate). Follow orange triangle trail markers through gates and flocks of sheep and down a dusty farm track. Don’t give up. In the patch of trees ahead, your goal .
Explore and use the fancy toilet. Good times!

Amazing views and walkaways. Historical and Intriguing Nature Creations are a treat to see.
Beautiful Riverside and Forest adds to the beauty.

A beautiful farm walk to the river to see these fascinating boulders. Great for photographing. Great spot for a picnic and a swim.

Excellent, well worth the trip, but don't believe the directions from Google maps, tis over 5kms from the turn off on to Peka Road, if you follow the map directions will end up in a field miles away.

(Translated) Place quite difficult to access from the main road, but it is worth to cover the few kilometers after hundreds of turns to peace and quiet complement the amazing views. You just have to be careful at the end of the road not to pass the gate through which you must open and drive down slightly. Then walk to the river and finally a walk among the amazing shaped large stones whose history is described exactly on the board.

(Translated) Attention, the last 6 km are unpaved gravel roads. Your car choice is important! The landscape is beautiful, but if you stay here, depending on the provider, you might have to walk many kilometers without reception to get help. The Google comments are without any references.
