Reviews of Edwin Fox Museum
S.
Great museum. Great learning the history of Edwin Fox and then actually walking on the ship.
k.
Loved it. Very nice people and the experience was something I have never done before. Really good museum, takes you back there and makes you feel it, the cold, damp, rot, everthing. You must go.
D.
Fantastic display and an amazing old ship in remarkable condition considering it's age.
Built in 1853 the Edwin Fox has a rich and colourful history.
Small gift and souvenir store. Open 7 days a week.
M.
Very informative, so cool being able to set foot inside the ship
R.
Great museum,
A bit of sailing history I did not know about.
Good place to spend an hour or so when in picton. Close to ferry.
C.
Went here on a whaling field trip. The ship looks very cool and parts of it have the items that would have been there. E.g. oil lanterns, hammocks and books. Some people in my class got to fire replica muskets.
S.
Whole museum dedicated to a boat with a very long history. Spent an hour looking at the displays upstairs, watching the video and exploring the boat. Staff were very helpful and passionate about the history of the boat. They have set up the museum to be interesting to both adults and kids, setting up play areas to keep kids busy as the adults read the displays.
M.
Such an amazing experience, great work done by the community to preserve the oldest ship "alive" who carried convicts in the 19th century. Allow one hour to cover both the ships itseld and the exhibition within the museum shop.
P.
What an amazing museum telling the story of an amazing ship. And you get to walk inside the ship itself. Well presented and great value for money.
T.
Really loved this museum. A must if in Picton. The history of the ship is fascinating and seeing the size of it when walking through is incredible. Lovely staff and very central location. My highest recommendation for the town.
L.
Very interesting place to visit in Picton. Edwin Fox is well presented and photos are allowed at this museum. Friendly staff and welcoming too. Amazing ship with a lot of history. I was here early in 2017.
R.
Extremely large and interesting collection of facts and figures and history of the Edwin Fox. I usually don't get excited by such things but it's a very well laid out exhibit and afterwards you can walk around the actual boat.
Highly recommend that you give it a go and allow an hour or two.
F.
Great experience to learn the history of this old wooden ship which is the legend of NZ heritage good location.
Recommend to book through some website for getting discount
D.
Interesting little museum, with informative video and unusual artifacts. And the Edwin Fox is accessible so you can walk on the decks and see what the ship is like.
S.
Fantastic insight into early settlers, transportation and migration. A very cool place to visit. You can dress up in 1800 garb and take part in reenacting ship life. Good fun.
R.
Recommended as a must-do and should be top of the list.
Very interesting, reasonable prices, well done to the preservation team.
Continue the good effort.
F.
It's a nice idea to build a museum around a old ship wreck. They presented and prepared the history of the Edwin Fox in a really beautiful way. It was cool to actually go and explore the ship wreck and how the crew or passenger lived during the 3-4 month travel from the UK to New Zealand
R.
A very informative and fun museum and a great chance to see inside the historic Edwin Fox which is the world's second oldest surviving merchant sailing ship!
B.
Nice museum about the construction and history of the ship told by artifacts or you can just watch the movie
Highlight is the preserved body of the ship giving you a great experience about it's dimensions and hour resilient it's been.
J.
We really enjoyed our time at the Edwin Fox Museum.
A 10th birthday party and there was so much to do. The staff were very friendly and went above and beyond. The function room was perfect for our small group. All ages had a wonderful experience whilst at the museum, some remembering when and other leraning about. Highly recommend the Edwin Fox Museum and the amazing staff, Thank you..
J.
Fascinating for anyone interested in maritime history, this vessel went around the world 34 times, transported convicts to Australia, soldiers to the Crimean War, settlers to New Zealand. On board, there were birthday, deaths, murders and some brutal experiences. Recommended!
D.
Fascinating museum - I look forward to future visits as the restoration continues!
P.
An enjoyable outing, quite good for families. The video (about 40mins) is well worth watching as is the visit to the boat itself. We were there for just over an hour.
J.
Interesting to experience the life on board a trading vessel, which has certainly seen its share of rough treatment.
P.
Visited this place every time I go through Picton. They have made fantastic progress in preserving this historic vessel. They deserve plenty of support to continue this journey.
H.
Beautiful place to visit...found the dogs been thru as well and therefore the cleanliness is on the ground wasn't 100%...
E.
Really awesome trip into history
M.
The ship itself is an impressive sight to see but is made ever more fascinating by the rich history behind it. Within the museum itself, the ship's history is presented well with many original artifacts. You could take your time to soak up the many carefully recorded details but if you don't have a lot of time to spare, it is presented in such a way that you would still get a lot out of it by whipping through.
P.
I am appreciative of the, Edwin Fox Museum for the displays, information, helpful and cheerful curator, but to know that I am a descent of, Catherine Curnow whom with her brother and sister came out in the, Edwin Fox.
n.
Very interesting. I'm not into boats but I spent almost 2 hours watching the movie and reading all the notes on exhibits then going through the ship.
J.
More fun than I expected! Very informative museum upstairs and I think I read just about everything (I don't usually!). Then you can go and view the ship. But you actually get to go on it! Absolutely fascinating and very well set out. Recommended!!
R.
Great look at a unique (last of its type) piece of maritime history and the many lives it impacted. Check out the visitor centre displays and short movie before going into the hull, you'll have a much greater appreciation of what you are looking at.
A.
A real tribute to Picton locals who restored the ‘Edwin Fox ship’, built the museum and amassed the artefacts to help explain its history and people who were transported on the vessel. A real eye opener to travel in 1800’s, we have everything so easy now by comparison !
L.
This is well worth a visit. we arrived too late in one night to go, and stayed over just to see it. Glad we did. If you love and appreciate old sailing vessels and history, you'll enjoy this. You get to walk over and in it too.
A.
Historic museum detailing the rise, fall and rise again of the Edwin Fox. There's a video presentation about the vessel and the dry docking. They had a special kid's day when we were there, with pirate costumes, biscuits and puzzles. You can walk through the vessel and they've added various props. It's a hands on display, and is quite unique.
A.
A unexpected Surprise. I did not know about NZ and its history with Convicts etc. Very good. Impressive Ship still today.
L.
Fantastic visit to the Edwin Fox Ship and Visitor Centre this morning.
A fascinating museum where the history of this amazing ship, it's passengers and life after serving as a convict and immigrant transportation ship really comes alive.
Extremely well laid out with lotsof interesting artefacts, family stories and information about the varied and long life of this amazing vessel.
So great to be able to walk aboard and underneath her to really get a feel for what life was like on-board when she was in use.
Definitely well worth a visit if you are visiting Picton.
Groups can even book a private tour and tea!
Lovely friendly and helpful staff.
My second visit and I learn something new each time .
J.
If your into Maritime history or history in general, this is a step back in time with a video to start (optional), lots to look and makes you think what European settlers endured to get here. The vessel itself is airy but cool and very interesting. Also the cost of entry help the preservation of the Edwin Fox Society ( my words) as a lot of people who have put big time and efforts to keep a part of our history. Well done to them.
A.
What an amazing place to visit. Picton is a special community who value the past. Amazing Museum!
B.
The ship itself is fantastic with plenty of hands on exhibits that give a real sense of what life on board would have been like.
J.
Very interesting museum with a good video explaining the history of the ship. The best part was being able to go into the ship and see how the people who immigrated to New Zealand travelled.
L.
A very charming little museum about the Edwin Fox sail ship. Quite interesting history story about the ship and does not take more than about an hour to complete and only 15 nz dollars to get in.
G.
Absolutely Fantastic place. I will definitely go back again. This museum is the epitome of meseums, a great collection of things on display... Great Great stuff and nice views on the seaside!!!! I love it!
L.
Gosh it is a hard ask to make a visitor experience out of an old ship - there must be some hard core history nuts in Picton as this is a pretty good effort. It is quite interesting seeing how small a standard berth was for an migrating family, wow it must have rough. Conditions for convicts - argh that must have been hell. So it is a well set out and informative but due to the nature of the limited subject the overall experience is a bit limited.
R.
This is a fascinating piece of history. Being in and on the ship is quite eerie and equally awesome, especially knowing how old it is and where it's been. The ship itself quite remarkable. Be sure to watch the video first at it sets the scene.
J.
Had no idea this was here. You can actually walk on the ship and see what things were like when it was in use. A lot of hard work has gone into this, amazing:)
J.
Very special preservation of one of the oldest wooden sailing ships in the world. An opportunity to feel what it must have been like for passengers and crew who sailed on her during the 19th Century.
P.
What a great little gem in Picton just by the InterIslander terminal. Full of history with a very detailed exhibition area as well as the ship itself.
L.
The documentary was longer than we expected but provided good context & background for the rest of the museum. Didn't expect this to be so interesting, we ended up staying well over an hour.
M.
Amazing, in this day and age that it's possible to enter the Ship and Dry Dock to view the Edwin Fox. Very informative introductory Video and exibits in Museum.
T.
So worth a visit to an amazing relic that has so much to tell us.
D.
Would have been brilliant if they turned off the annoying buzzer as people enter the museum. Which is audible upstairs They could ask people not have long conversations on their phone in the exhibition space.. Otherwise pretty cool.
A.
Didn't expect much, so was delighted to find well set-out exhibition, lots of info, great ops for photos and access to inside and outside of hull. The Edwin Fox deserves more backing from sport- mad kiwis, it's a gem.
R.
Great story here. Museum and ships hulk which you can walk into. Watch the video to hear about this important relic from NZ history.
L.
The best museum in NZ, hands down. Seriously way better than TePapa, because it has, you know, actual history. Kids loved it, I loved it. Go.
G.
Took our granddaughter for a look, she enjoyed it very much for a 9 year old and took a lot of photos.
허.
Great value. Feel the real history
p.
