Reviews of Alexandra Redoubt

Great piece of NZ History.
L.
Went with a school trip with a guide from the Te Awamutu Museum, fantastic!!! Information on the board tells you all about it too. Recommend a trip to the museum if you have time.

This redoubt was built by Pākehā settlers in 1868 to protect the new settlement of Alexandra (Pirongia) from feared attacks by armed Māori. With its high earth walls and deep, clearly defined trenches, this is the best preserved of other similar fortifications that were scattered between Alexandra and Cambridge.
The King Country, which you can see from the hilltop, was named after the Māori King, Tawhiao. Tawhiao led his people into exile and later settled in Whatiwhatihoe, just two kilometres beyond the aukati (confiscation line). The government had seized more than a million acres of what is now some of the best farmland in the world. Ultimately, one in ten Waikato settlers walked off the land they had been given – in their view it was too swampy to be productive.

Kept it amazing condition.... quite a contrast to that of the Maori Heritage site Maatakitaki Pa only 5 mins down the road.... Colonies reminding us yet again in subtle ways how they took everything.... I would like to see other heritage sites taken care of with just as much if not more significance.... #Priorities #TangataWhenua

Great view of the mountain. It's historical significance far outshines it's visual appeal.
