Reviews of Farewell Spit Eco Tours
M.
Great tour! Tour guide was great. Plenty of stops along the split. Make sure to take your own food etc. Sand dunes on the return was awesome! Bus was a bit tight, lots of people, summer heat didn’t help and the bus got stuck a few times but it’s expected in the sand. Lighthouse and history was good. Highly recommend for birdwatchers.
H.
Great experience and exceeded my high expectations
Paddy, our guide and bus driver, he is so knowledgeable and explained everything that you could think of over 6.5 hours.
We enjoyed the trip a lot, not just the view and the whole experience, but also great seating (we were on the big bus, right side of seats and seats just below the roof window having some cool air)
The seats were pre-arranged so you couldn’t choose. (right side of seats better for photographs)
Take plenty of water, sunscreen, cap, sunglasses.
Food is not allowed in the bus.

This tour is world class and is a bucket list activity. The only way to see the spit and lighthouse is on this tour. They are approved to drive on the spit to the end. The tour includes walking on sand dunes. Stop at Cape Farewell. Walking on the beach. The tour guides are amazing especially Paddy. The bonus for our tour was getting to see whales offshore. This is a must visit. I highly recommend this.
J.
Had a great experience on the tour with Charles as our guide. Charles had a near encyclopedic knowledge about all the birdlife and constantly slowed down so we could see them. Also had a genuine sense of care for the area and it's future whilst also making many references to the past as well. Was a great day out enjoyed by all.
S.
This was, far and away, the best tour trip I've ever been on (and I've been to London, Rome and Paris!). We had an extremely knowledgeable and witty commentator for a 4WD bus driver who had us all laughing from start to finish.
Stunning views with stops for photo opportunities, local history, a wealth of stories, most amusing, EG: What is the safety protocol for finding a live shark on a tour? On a closed bus? Traveling at 55kph, on a deserted beach? The justification for this page of the manual would stun you!
We walked barefoot in the cool white powder fine sand dunes at sunset and saw the orange moon rise up out of the sea on the last leg. Magical doesn't begin to describe it!
Ask for Anton, fly fisherman turned walking bird encyclopedia, and you'll never regret it.
D.
This was a great tour. The scenery was fantastic, and the commentary was interesting. The the beach and sand dunes on the spit were really impressive, and Cape Farewell is absolutely awesome.
c.
Anton n Paddy provided a great day of fun and entertainment, thier knowledge of the area was very impressive. Thanks to the keen eye of Anton we spotted a whale 🐋 in the horizon.
The highlight had to be jumping off the sand dunes and sliding down to the bottom.
Great weather and a fantastic day's experience with Farewell Spit Eco Tours. Highly recommended... Thank-you.
A.
This tour was amazing. Had Charles as our guide who was amazing. Incredibly knowledgeable about everything on the spit and was always happy to share this knowledge. Had a great winter day on the spit and saw more wildlife than I could have hoped for. Incredible value for money. Only tip I could give is be sure to take some substantial food with you if you think you're going to get hungry haha
R.
It was seeing Farewell Spit from domestic flights and a too brief previous visit to Golden Bay which drew me back to explore it more and do this trip. The weather was perfect and the trip, with Pino driving/guiding, was superb.
Her knowledge, the stories of history (both colonial and recent) and enthusiasm for such a wonderful place added to to all the scenery and wildlife had to offer. Because it was calm we saw lots of of wildlife, adult and young, with Pino picking a path to optmise our viewing without interferring with their day. Allow a day, the trip itself is about six hours but multiple stops, superb scenery and history to match make the time fly.
S.
Couldn't have asked for better weather! It was perfect. Sun and no breeze. Charles, our tour guide, was very informative, with his knowledge of the bird life and the history of the area. Well worth it! Another item ticked off the bucket list.
B.
What a great tour! Our tour guide Anton was very knowledgeable of the area, flora and fauna and told really engaging stories. The tour was 6hours and not once did I feel like it was too long. The spit is a beautiful spot and a place everyone should visit and learn about. We really enjoyed ourselves. Good value for money and experience. Thanks for a great afternoon Anton. Ryan and Bex.
C.
Went on the tour on 20 July 2021 with Anton. His wealth of knowledge of the area and the birds was amazing. Highly recommend a tour as it is well worth the price for the things you see and do.
W.
It's not the best surprise tour but definitely worth the money they charged.
We went to one of the most remote places in NZ and you will not able to get to this distance of what they bring to you.
Also, the guide are extremely knowledgeable, gave us so many insights during the whole tour.
Our whole family from three-year old to sixty-six years old, we all enjoyed very much. 😄
R.
Loved this tour! Charles was very knowledgeable and dedicated to us all having a great experience. Bus was safe and comfortable despite the terrain. A fun day for all ages!
M.
Amazing experience. Our guide Pinot (sp?) was knowledgeable, articulate, enthusiastic and passionate about the place, the history, the environment and its restoration, and us, the people on the bus. I had wondered about the price, but at six and a half hours it was worth every cent. We were lucky to have a beautiful calm sunny autumn day which enhanced the glory of the Spit. Highly recommended.
J.
I really enjoyed the trip. It was well organised and our guides/drivers were very knowledgeable. We saw quite a few species of birds and fur seals and learnt about the history of the lighthouse. We were very lucky with the weather, we had a warm calm day. Apparently it is usually very windy on the spit and can be quite cold.
S.
Great scenery, knowledgable guide and lots of info on wildlife and environment.
I wasn't sure what to expect from the 6.5 hour tour as I'm not into birds but I really enjoyed it. Spotting birds was only a small part of the total, which included amazing scenery, finding fossils, seal-spotting, history of the lighthouse, environmental changes, plants and animals.
Our guide was Pinot and she was really enthusiastic and knowledgeable, interesting and fun.
Take water, sunscreen, cap, sunglasses, binoculars if you have them and a picnic or snack if you want more than a muffin.
This company puts a huge amount of work into the local environment through trapping pest species and removing rubbish from the beach. they thoroughly deserve your support and you will enjoy it.
N.
Great tour, highly recommended. Charles was our guide and he was super knowledgeable about the area, its history, the native birds, and had loads of interesting stories. The tour company is proactive at looking after the area and work with the department of conservation to ensure the area is well cared for and protected.
l.
Eco Tours driver Charles shared with us his wonderful knowledge of bird life and the sites on Farewell Spit. Muffins, tea/coffee was enjoyed by all at the Spit Lighthouse. Charles told some amazing stories that entertained us all. This is a "must do experience" in Golden Bay.
D.
Perfect! Great commentary! Great company! Great day! AAA+
W.
A must do. We took our 4 kids on the tour and they were kept occupied for the whole time. The day flew by with great history and facts provided by our guide Pinot! Thanks heaps!!
R.
Brilliant trip. Like the Cormack Mccarthy novel All The Pretty Horses, what appears at first to be a bleak and barren landscape, the driver brings it to life, packed dense with history, Flora, Fauna, pigs, apocalypse now gunships, ship wrecks, Gannets, whales, quick sand, lighthouse keepers, geology, sand dunes, fossils.... I want to do it again, I want to take all my friends. It is awesome and beautiful.
L.
Not just a tour but an ADVENTURE!! The ONLY way to really experience Farewell Spit. Well worth the cost. Excellent Driver/Guides make the experience very memorable. More than a day out, it's a day of a lifetime!! All ages and abilities well cared for. Well done Farewell Spit Eco Tours!!
A.
Delightful! This tour is a must-do. We had a wonderful tour with Murray - thank you very much for the wealth of information. We truly enjoyed this experience and would highly recommend it to others.
Will definitely go again, the next time we are in the area.
C.
Excellent tour! Think it’s even better than the Abel Tasman Park. Murray was the beat guide!! It’s so beautiful and peaceful! You get to see beautiful scenery, lots of seals and birds, I highly recommend it! Couple of stops where you have some time to enjoy and take pictures.
C.
Fantastic tour with very experienced and knowledgeable guides. This tour will be on top of our Todo list every time we make it to Golden Bay.
Fantastic views of stunning beaches and rare birds. We even saw a blue whale in the distance.
Highly recommended!
H.
Best trip ever.. the money we spent on the tour was totally worth it. Tourist guide Mr. Murray was so courteous and knowledgeable. We learned a lot about Farewell Spit and the nature that governs the place. Thanks a lot Mr. Murray and absolutely blown away by his passion. Absolutely recommended for people visiting Abel Tasman.. do not miss this tour
R.
Wonderful day with family and friends on this tour out on the Farewell Spit. Our guide was a lot of fun and gave us a lot of information on the geological history of the spit and its ecological importance to the South Island, along with stories of Captain Cook and his long last look at the Farewell Spit - the reason for its name. We enjoyed a nice lunch at the lighthouse as we watched the Gannet Colony from a safe distance. It was an incredible adventure and one I would definitely do again
R.
Farewell Spit Tour: The day was well organized and we had a great guide Elaine was some great sense of humor and lot of local stories. We travelled in a well mainted bus and saw good amout of wildlife. I really enjoy the day on farwell spit. The only small disadvantage in main season travelling is, that it was not quiet lonely, but four busses have been with us on the trip. Even with many people up the pile of sand it was a great day.
R.
We had a fantastic time. We can highly recommend this tour.
M.
There are wild places in NZ, where humans have very limited access. Farewell Spit is one of these places,
It still has a feeling of Tapu (NZ native term: Sacredness) the further along you go, where humans are no longer the normal, or the common.
"Giant steps are what you take, walking on The Moon"
The Police, 1979. Lyrics that describe moving along huge sand dunes of the Farewell Spit
(Pic #10 & #11 people moving back to the landing craft)
Primo drivers with good commentary about what passes outside the window of your customised, 4x4, air conditioned specialist transport
This part/side of the country has old (by NZ standards) Pakeha history. The Land Breakers. Miners,
Whalers, Sealers. Timbermen. Places with large populations anda dreams of Capital Cities...Farewell Spit Eco Tours shares the past.
Farewell Spit Eco Tours
1. Highly Recommended Operator -
Only Access onto the Spit (public foot access 1st 5kms only)
2. 5 Stars Activity - Well worth the time
3. My 2nd time with Farewell Spit Eco Tours, and each time "a choice buzz!"
Congratulations
Well Done
M.
This is a great tour. It is tide-dependent, so departure time from Collingwood varies from day to day – we left at 11 a.m. to coincide with low tide, because the drive to the lighthouse is on the ocean side of the spit..
First stop was on the clifftops at Cape Farewell, the most northerly point of the South Island, where Murray, our driver, told us to stay behind the fence as the sea is a long, vertical, distance below, and the sudden stop at the bottom would probably not be good for us.
Then, back along the road to the start of Farewell Spit, out on to the ocean beach, a brief stop at Fossil Point and then 22 kilometres to the lighthouse.
That's all I'm going to say here – I try to avoid spoilers – but it's a great trip and we learned a lot about the local history and its wildlife.
Bottom line: do the trip. You won't be sorry.
R.
Good value for money, full and informative tour of this magical place. Murray was a great guide passing on his knowledge of wildlife and history of Golden Bay and the Spit. No mention of Queen Bee though. Very well done.
A.
This is a must do when in Collingwood. Karsten is a great guide and knows all the vantage points at the farewell spit. Highly recommend activity.
J.
This tour was fantastic.
Well done, plenty of talking from the guide with good information about the history and current projects and the future for this place.
G.
Great family experience . The yours are run by very enthusiastic and very well informed guides/ bus drivers who can keep you entertained and involved for more than 6 hours while giving you a unique wildlife experince.
E.
Anton was a really informative and pleasant guide with lots of funny stories to share. His driving is pretty good too, didn't get stuck once and the gear box is still intact. The tour itself was simple but spectacular and with the tea and biscuits as a halftime at the lighthouse was fantastic. Thoroughly enjoyed it and would recommend.
C.
This has to be a definate must-do on anyone's list! Well worth the money, which goes towards the pest control and replanting along the Spit.
Great opportunity for photographers.
A.
Went on this tour on the 23rd July .
Awesome day n the driver Anton knew his stuff. A lot of knowledge. Felt it was worth the cost . Would recommend this company n would do the trip again .
Thank you for a awesome day n experience of the remoteness n beauty of Farewell Spit.
M.
Excellent tour and the guide was knowledgeable and interesting. There was also a nice stop for lunch.
K.
Why is this tour service not 5/5 stars?! We had the most fabulous time on the Farewell Spit Eco Tour. Murray was our guide and was so enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the area of Golden Bay, bird life and the history of the spit. We had the best weather with a little bit of wind to reveal the ever changing landscape of the spit. Saw a white heron, 3 different types of turns, oyster catchers, pied shags, gannets, gulls, seals and even got to see a whole lot of pig prints in the sand. It was absolutely the highlight of our trip and worth every cent and more. Who else can say they’ve been almost to the end of Farewell Spit? I cannot recommend this tour company high enough. Bumped into another couple on our tour later who could not stop raving about it either. Although we didn’t walk to the gannet colony - as it wasn’t part of our tour, we drove up enough to see it. All the gannets bar 3 had left the area. The whole tour didn’t feel rushed and was just an outright treat. If in doubt, just go as you won’t regret it.
L.
Great bus drivers, very knowledgeable, comfortable buses and lots of opportunities for photos, sand dunes etc. They took us to Cape Farewell, and then up the spit for an hour at the lighthouse with food and drinks, and then stopped multiple times for some fun in the dunes.
A.
Really knowledgeable driver-guide who was able to identify every species of bird we saw. I really recommend this trip.
L.
We went today with Murray as the guide on the Farewell Spit tour and the whole experience was fantastic. Right from the beautiful sunset we experienced when we headed off from Collingwood to the end. The knowledge shared by Murray and just his enthusiasm for the wildlife, the wetlands and history made the whole tour immensely enjoyable. Highlights for me we're spotting a kotuku in 2 different inlets, the amazing desert like landscape of the spit, seeing big wild pig footprints in the sand, the lighthouse, and running down the sound dune. It was an experience to remember and treasure. Feel very lucky to have been able to see it in all it's wild beauty.
A.
Can not recommend more highly!!! Charles was such fun and so knowledgeable. A must do!!!
C.
Had a wonderful day. The staff were great and the experience is one all Kiwis should do at least once. A unique part of our country that we should also share with our overseas visitors and this is the perfect company to do this with.
S.
We had an awesome day yesterday on our tour!! From the moment we met our driver Anton, we knew we were going to be entertained, along with his great knowlege and driving. The cuppa tea lady was lovely too. Everything was handled perfectly. Thank you
T.
• Our guide, Anton, was fantastic.
• Very special place to have the privilege of seeing.
• Had a great time jumping down the big sand dunes
L.
Great scenery very knowledgeable operators
T.
The Farewell Spits Eco Tour Co driver Tim supplied a highly satisfying, informative tour to & from the spit. This Co supplied in spades a tour to remember.
As 3 adults we were provided a tour that was safe, informative & fun to do. I highly recommend this Co to all to do this tour.
This spit tour is a must do & was a privelage to have done. It defies words to describe the fact of where we had been taken & found ourselves.
Thankyou
K.
One of the best day tours I have ever been on! Such a beautiful landscape. Saw amazing wildlife including birds and seals, but what really made the experience so exceptional was the storytelling of our driver/guide Charlie. He really brought the areas history to life as well as sharing stories from his time on the spit. Worth every penny!
M.
Awesome trip. Turned out to be a highlight of our holiday. So much to see. Great staff, knowledgeable and friendly. Fantastic way to see Fairwell Spit and learn about it's history and wildlife. Great value fun trip for the family.
J.
We have had an awesome day with Farewell Spit Eco tours. Incredibly knowledgeable guide Paddy who knew so much about the area, bird life and history.
We saw seals, 25 million year old fossils, barchan dunes which are formed by the wind which today on the Spit was ~35 knots. An 1800s lighthouse, gannet colony, all in almost every weather in one day - sunshine, wind, rain and even hail- in the most amazing scenery.
Can’t recommend highly enough
C.
We had a magic day on this 6 hour tour. It exceeded our expectations and we felt privileged to visit this very very special part of New Zealand. Our guide Paddy was efficient, knowledgeable and ensured that we all had a wonderful experience. We loved the birds, the seals, the fossils, the incredible sand landscapes and the visit to the lighthouse. Paddy had a story or three about all of these things. DO IT!
W.
What an awesome experience! Anton (tour guide) was super knowledgeable and really added to the day. Our 3 kids: 6, 4 and 2 were definitely entertained... even over 6 hours! Thanks heaps guys, some great memories for our family
R.
Guides are passionate about their job giving great Eco tour experience of the spit.
d.
Amazing part of new Zealand.
Bill was an awesome bus driver, great local to talk to
A.
A wonderful day visiting the Farewell Spit Lighthouse and seeing all manner of seabirds and seals.
D.
Mum and I had a great day out on this tour. The tour guide Pino was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about her job. The cuppa and muffin at the lighthouse was great. Definitely worth the money and time. Thankyou Eco tours
M.
We loved this tour, Anton, our driver, was great and he had lots of knowledge to share with us. Bus was comfy too. Fantastic, we would do it again.
B.
An absolute must. Awesome commentary. Amazing trip. It was always a desire to go to Farewell Spithese. These guys are the only ones that can get you as close to the end as possible, no public allowed past a certain point. Cuppa tea at the lighthouse exceptional.
J.
Loved seeing the rugged Tasman sea crashing onto the spit. A couple of sleepy seals and endless birds that you would expect to see. Definitely value for money and a very attentive, knowledgeable tour driver. With the utmost of respect intended, our driver did not stop talking in six and a half hours....this I found quite exhausting.....it made it difficult to speak to each other as we did not want to prevent anyone from hearing what was being said. Sometimes less is more.
R.
Absolutely stunning. Paddy was a really good host
J.
Recommend you do this tour. Bloody brilliant trip! Had a beautiful day and awesome company. 18 on the tour. Well worth every dollar!
D.
With this tour you get almost to the very north end of the South Island of NZ, where you only get with this tour, as normally people are not allowed. You get onto Dunes, see wonderful birds, stunning sea/beach views. You go the Light House (not into), having a coffee & Muffin. Listening to the very interesting stories of this part of the country, which the guide/driver tells you in a very enjoyably way. It was one of the best tour I have made in NZ (and I have done a lot). Absolutely recommendable !
S.
Fantastic tour, saw lots of wild life and learnt about the area
S.
Almost seven hours of spectacular scenery in 4 wheel drive buses, exploring the unique geography and history of Farewell Spit. Our guide, Pino, was a wealth of information and highly entertaining.
A.
Fabulous, our guide was brilliant, totally recommend.
C.
Very knowledgeable driver. Great fun and interesting
J.
Amazing location! Scenery is stunning and some nice walking paths near by.
F.
This tour was filled with fabulous information about the natural history of the area, opportunity to go and see wildlife up close and engaging narrative about stories from the past
Thank you Murray you were fantastic tour guide
J.
Murray the driver was absolutely brilliant with his almost never-ending comments of the landscape animal and bird life around us. He is very knowledgeable in this and makes the trip really interesting. The only downside was the cost at $155 it was expensive compared to the tour we did to Milford Sound which was longer with more stops and cheaper
K.
Wow, what an amazing tour. The guide was very knowledgeable about the local area. We got to go right to the end and have lunch near the light house. We then got to go jumping down the sand dunes. We had an amazing day. Would definitely recommend to everyone.
M.
A must do tour, the price "looks" expensive but surely worth for money paid.
H.
A fantastic tour. Murray was our guide and he made the tour. His knowledge of the area, and in particular the birdlife, was impressive. He knew just when to find the perfect views and gave just the right amount of information. The scenery of course was stunning.
R.
Such a fantastic tour. Our tour guide Murray was so informative and shared so much of his knowledge of the Collingwood/Golden Bay region as well as his knowledge for Farwell spit and it’s wildlife. Murray made the tour and we are so grateful for the experience. Thanks Farwell Spit Tours for a wonderful day.
K.
Rough road, long drop but a great place to see.
D.
Fascinating scenery. Quite a lot of driving, not suitable for kids, I'd suggest - but most of us were a half century too old for that description. The commentary made it interesting, it was non-stop, informative, entertaining and enthusiastic. Good job, Murray!
J.
WOW! We had an AMAZING day on our tour out to the lighthouse on the far end of the Spit. Tony, our tour driver/guide certainly knew his history of the area, and the landscape geology, and happily shared this through-out the trip. We saw seals, Gannets, sand dunes +++ A FANTASTIC experience. THANK YOU
J.
Our tour guide Murray was great. His knowledge of Golden Bay was amazing and he was very keen to pass it on along with his love of the unique ecosystem of Cape Farewell. Wonderful day.
