Reviews of Government Gardens
L. J.
A stunning place to visit, with amazing buildings and beautiful gardens. So pleased we visited!
A. G.
A very well groomed garden. Lovely to walk around and a play ground for the kids to waste a bit of time
K. C.
One of my favourite places to visit in Rotorua. The gardens are always immaculate and so pretty. Leave plenty of time to explore and take a moment for yourself. when open the museum is really worthwhile.
K. S.
Spent quite a bit of time over our weekend away at the gardens, it's beautiful and peaceful but sometimes you may be lucky to go when there's a band playing in the bandstand. So Saturday we got to listen to 60s tunes as we relaxed... plus there's load's of pokestops and gyms there 😂 hubby was happy, while I took pictures.
L. H.
Absolutely love hanging out here. History, beauty, bird life, lakelife, flowers,me time, a nice place to run n walk
V. N.
Beautiful place for a picnic. We loved it.
T. C. S. N.
One of the best places for viewing fall foliage in North Island
O. U.
Located at Rotorua CBD - an Iconic place for Rotoruans.
Here you can visit the Rotorua Museum (Sorry, we couldn't make it, as we went there post hours, next time sure!).
Nevertheless, the gardens are fantastic and the Museum building is one of the most decent backgrounds you can capture with your picture. It takes you back in Victorian Reigm.
R. H.
Excellent recreational area set in accessible paths and thoroughfares. Government buildings were beautifully preserved and presented. Attraction of croquet and bowls greens added spectator attraction during games time.
M. D.
A nice place for pictures, but we were unluckly, as the museum was temporarliy closed. Lots of animals, flowers and geo-thermal activities. Better on a sunny day.
You can have a quick half an hour walk there, if you have some empty time slots while in Rotorua.
K. K.
Lovely garden and friendly kids swing. Awesome architectural wooden house of museum. We enjoy our afternoon here. Hips Of car parking are available inside the government Gardens. Parking are wheelchair friendly. Everywhere have access of the wheelchair. Nice hot swimming pool with restaurant. There have some events sometimes inside the gardens and museum. Keep eyes on the website for events details.
M. L.
A well preserve place. I like how the museum was built all of it - structure, architecture. The facade is very picturesque with a very wide garden. We visited during summer and we are lucky to see the beauty of the entire place. We are just sad that the museum is currently closed
P. R.
Loved the tulips and marigold in here. Plenty of picnic tables and places to sit and enjoy the beautiful blooms. There’s a rabbit as well, good luck if you can spot it!
B. H.
Rotorua's Government Gardens is centrally located near the city's CBD.
A favourite destination for both residents and visitors, Government Gardens provides beautiful garden panoramas and historic buildings to admire.
J. P. O.
Stunning in a nice blue skied day. The flowers where gorgeous so many different colours. Kids loved exploring and loved the park.
J. H.
Cool place to go look at if you're in the area. The museum was closed when we went so there was a big fence around the building which was kind of a bummer. Enjoyed the art as well as the clean fields and walk ways. There's also a local bowling club and a small geothermal pool. If you're just relaxing and strolling through Rotorua I would recommend swinging by.
S. M.
Beautiful gardens along the shore of the lake. A great way to finish the day with a walk. Easily accessible to everyone from downtown. A world class site to visit.
N. C.
We enjoyed strolling through these gardens as a family and time to stop and enjoy the playground, walk out to sulphur point and appreciate the gardens and buildings. Plenty to look at, including wildlife and thermal activity. A nice place to spend some time while in the area.
B. M.
A great public space that has many aspects from museums, public bathing areas, children’s playgrounds, bowling greens, sulphur springs and much much more.
The grounds are very well kept with the variety of flowers and trees outstanding. Originally gifted to the people of the world by a local Maori Chief, it has been kept and maintained by successive councils.
W. O.
Around the back near Sulphur point there are some hidden treasures of art around the lake and thermal walkway close by where you can smell, see and hear the thermal water burbling beneath the rocks. Lovely rose gardens close by worthy a walk through to "Smell the Roses" **** Free Activity ****
M. B.
Lovely gardens! We had such a wonderful time. The gardens are very well maintained just the litter and some spots weren't cool but that doesn't take anything away from its beauty!
C. P.
WONDERFUL place to play a gig. Great Audience, even if the weather does not always play ball completely - here is our band jazzanovo playing Dance me to the end of Love.
C.
Lovely place to walk round. Beautiful flowers and peaceful settings. Love walking round the roses and the scent is amazing. Love the ole school roses ❤️
A. M.
Wow, this is a really beautiful garden and the buildings are so interesting and pretty. The large building was the Rotorua museum which is sadly closed due to earthquake damage. I believe this building was originally a government building. There is also a bowling green where people play out door bowls often, they were bowling both times I visited. In 2018 I also went to the garden when Prince Harry and Meghan visited the garden, it was extremely busy with thousands wanting to see the new couple. The garden is also pot-marked with a few steamy craters and is near the city. Plenty of parking available and near the lake area.
T.
This place is fantastic! It was just so much more than I was expecting. It is expansive, exceptionally well done, and free! You would be doing yourself a disservice not to stop by for a couple hours if you are nearby.
F. M.
We went there with friends just 12 days ago.
I guess we are lucky because we visited it at right season.
all flowers were so beautiful there.
the garden has good design, clean environment.
plus location is great. 5 mins from CBD area and i site centre.
felt so relax to walk in this garden. may be picnic is another good idea for family people.
recommend to any visitors.
w. p.
Beautiful walk around the gardens plenty to see the museum and Blue baths are in the area
R.
We stayed right across the street from the Government Gardens at the Prince's Gate hotel, so we were easily able to walk the gardens whenever we had downtime. The grounds are beautiful, with historic buildings and landmarks dotting the landscape. The museum itself was closed for earthquake repairs while we were there, but it was fun just walking around.
T. N.
Stunning building under quake proof works. Top of steps from garden to old museum is a free one hour tour (12pm and 1pm) think maybe different on a Saturday- of gardens and all the surrounding interests and history😄 beautifully laid out although smell of hot pools in the air😂 nice town too
T. R.
One of the best stops to look out for when travelling to Rotorua on a holiday. Lush flower gardens will welcome visitors and so much greens everywhere. As of this posting, I believe there are some renovations going on in the museum building itself but it won't bother visitors at all. Will definitely be back.
Ã.
Very good place
Great view
Very good serviced garden
W. J. T.
In this free park, you get to see some historical and nature landmarks. The museum looks gorgeous too (although there's an entrance fee). You can also walk on the trail alongside the lake.
L.
Love this place. It's a nice place to walk around especially with little kids. The gardens are immaculate and a great place to unwind
J. L.
Beautiful garden, just love the colour and peacefulness of the place
K. O.
Located at Rotorua CBD. Beautiful garden with peaceful and many different roses 🌹
T. D.
Absolutely beautiful. The whole place. Pity the museum is not open at the moment. There is so much around there to see and do.
G. J.
Lovely buildings and gardens. Too bad the museum a d the baths were closed. Even so it is worth a visit for the gardens alone.
G. S.
A fantastic park to spend some time relaxing. Park the car get your Jandels on & explore.
The grounds are very well kept & easy to explore. lots of flora & fauna. The Tiki fence posts were a real treat.
The day we were there (late Jan 2018) the main museum was closed for structural repairs but this did not dampen our experience.
We parked the car & walked the park & took in the sites.
A well spent afternoon relaxing.
G.
Stunning gardens to stroll through as you appreciate the beautiful landscapeds flower beds and trees. This used to be the Governor's private garden but has been since independence open to the public to enjoy. There are small ponds with flowers enhancing their beauty that may well take your breath away. You are bound to reach for your camera (or phone) to take some photographs for postterity. Don't miss these lovely gardens out of your itinerary if you are visiting Rotorua in New Zealand.
G. W.
While it's a disappointment that the museum will be closed for the foreseeable future due to earthquake prepping, the gardens are still pleasant to walk around and then the crouquet that the elderly were out playing. Multiple gardens, sculptures, ponds, and a gazebo. Smell the flowers to smell anything other than sulphur!
L. W.
Stunning in every way. The government house/museum is beautiful, we were really sad that the museum was under repairs. But it was still a lovely stroll in the town.
W. P.
The Museum is closed at present due to earthquake damage but the gardens and surrounding areas are beautiful
N. G.
The place is neat. And the air is fresh when we visited the flowers not all bloomed but hopefully on our next visit our timing is good where we could really see the beauty of the garden.
J. D.
I appreciated viewing the Soldiers Memorials and monuments, and Whangapīpiro (Rachel Pool) hot water and steam. I also saw an impressive sculpture of a man and woman. Lovely to have a wander round the gardens even in winter. Finding a park was not easy and there seemed to be a lot of traffic passing through. Disappointing to see the Museum is closed.
C. Y.
Relax and enjoy this beautiful garden. Too bad the museum is closed but one could always enjoy it's splendour from the outside. Go at night and it's a completely different experience.
t. s.
Nice relaxing beautiful gardens areea. I love this place. realty is it's nice quite amazingly beautiful place to sit relax or js Sunday stroll through. Even on a rainy day this place beautiful. 💯❤️🙂
M. M. E.
We visited last 12 October. The different colours of tulips and other flowers are really stunning. It’s a must place to visit in Rotorua.
L. A.
Always a neat place to take people. Interesting facts. Must see tourist place.
O. B.
Museum is closed indefinitely but the park is beautiful. Lots of tulips and flowers this time of year. Plenty of free parking. Picnic tables and a playground too. Nice path to walk by the bay.
J.
Beautifully presented throughout the year and 4 seasons. Plenty parking and space for all to have a walk about. Pitty Rotorua was once a Crime Capital of NZ.
l. p.
Beautifully maintained gardens and lawns. Unfortunately the museum is still closed awaiting upgrade renovations to mitigate earthquake risk
T. G.
Amazing place to visit! The government house/museum is amazing to look at. You can go around at roam around at the gardens. There is a playground for young ones to play at, and a pool nearby in case you want to have a dip. There are small numerous thermal attractions in which you can see. It is in the city centre so you can't miss coming here!
B.
Good Garden with beautiful flowers 🌸
A. Y.
Never say no to visit the Government Gardens in Rotorua, you can always felt great about the history and culture when you walking into the park, the Grass Bowling field, the Bathhouse building, the gardens.
N.
Beautiful gardens. Not possible to access the interiors until 2022 - it's foundations were damaged due to an earthquake. If you go, do a free tour of the exterior. The place has beautiful gardens, statues, pools etc.
R. R. K. E.
Fun place for family especially kids, beautiful locations, nice View 😂💥🌟🎉✌
M. A. L.
Awesome place, from the beginning of the las century this place has been kept very well maintained, put us back to those times, of you are passionate about history you will love it
M. I.
Beautiful place. Very clean and quiet today.
M. A.
A very beautiful garden with nice views and fresh air.
Lots of green areas make it a great treat to Rotorua
J. D.
Great place to see some of Rotorua's geothermal wonders (for free), grounds are always well kept, playground for kids, eating areas for picnic's or a lovely stroll (or huge areas to run if you're into that sort of thing) with a Cafe up by the roadside. Great place to have a day out
M.
Museum not open but the surroundings are beautiful. A must to visit
B.
great fun place to explore. . Plenty of historic facts to look at. . Great when it is very sunny
A. T.
Nice view, the building itself looks amazing plus the lawn in front was nice too but sadly its closed with a barrier all around it when i visited on the 3rd nov.
C. A.
We did the new escapade game around the government gardens today. So much fun! We love escape rooms and thought we would try something different and had a blast. Was so good to learn all about the history surrounding the government gardens.
M.
Still a beautiful free walk
S. P.
Beautiful garden. There were a lots of colourful tulips. The hot spring was amazing.
P.
Gardens were spectacular. Building behind gates which ruins photo opportunities

An amazing place next to Lake Rotorua. Beautiful gardens and play areas for kids. Plenty of parking space and also has Event Place. The lake is beautiful and has beautiful view and so many birds.
H.
Amazingly beautiful place very tidy and we loved and enjoyed a lot with my kids..
L.
I came there on October, it was beautiful, warm, and saw lots of varieties of flowers
S. J.
Very pretty lawns and gardens. There are lots of trails to walk around. It's close to "eat street" which offers a variety of food options. One can also walk to the lake.
There is no fee. And parking is plenty (mostly at no fee - depeneding on the hour of the day).
p. r. s.
I loved this place. The whole feeling was unique and just amazing. Obviously the Rotorua smell was there but hey, Thats why we went there. #love Rotorua
m.
Great place to relax and enjoy rest thermal smells and a great building
J. J.
Good place for a walk. It's unfortunate the museum is still closed.
H. T.
Very beautiful. If you love peaceful beautiful gardens planted out with a great balance of bright annual flowers and herbaceous borders with sculpture dotted around the place this is for you. Great place for kids to have a good run around too
S. J.
Very pretty lawn and garden.
Very close to "eat street" that has many food options.
One can also walk to lake.
Parking was not a problem. Plenty of street parking.
K. T.
The museum is closed for renovations. The others are just good and worth a look!
E. P.
Beautiful place with so many things to learn and discover.
P. K.
A very beautiful and preserved place. The gardens and flowers were colourful
T.
Beautiful place to explore and appreciate the gardens
D. R.
The grounds were beautiful to walk around. Stop in the bath house and then walk to the lake. Relax on the lawn. There is not much to do but it is very relaxing if you are looking for a stroll.
P. K.
Very nice, well maintained gardens. Pleasant place to spend sunny afternoon.
z. a.
good atmosphere. good garden for relax time
A. D.
Really enjoyed a relaxing half day walking in the gardens. Nicely set out with historic buildings. Unusual ponds coloured muddy grey by the sulphur geothermal upwelling. Interesting sculptures here and there.
F. S.
Very beautiful and well maintained. The museum was closed for assessment of earthquake damage.
C.
Amazing garden view. Nice for taking photos
M. B.
Loved this place. Very well looked after. The museum still closed to visitors, but the park worth a visit.
L.
Beautiful place but it was closed due to construction work being done
W. v. D.
Nice place for a pleasant walk.
S. T.
Very beautiful place with good aroma from flowers
D.
Beautiful gardens, shame about the vlised buildings, a huge loss to the community
H.
Nice place to visit, well maintained and clean
E. T.
Nice garden to take some photos.
B.
Beautiful gardens near our hotel. We especially liked the rose garden which was in full bloom.
M.
There is a free history walking tour at 11 in the morning that meets in front of the old bath house. Very interesting and informative. The children's playground behind the rose garden was also good fun for little ones.
S.
Beautiful garden with lot of scenic fantasies.
J.
Little bit of history, lil bit of flowers, and a big cool building what more do you want?
M.
Government Gardens are a lovely place to wander through. They do walking tours and the guides are knowledgeable and friendly. The along the shoreline is a nice way to finish the day
M. B.
Lovely gardens, definitely worth a visit
C. R.
Beautiful as always colourful flowers everywhere
O. I. J.
must visit this Icon of Rotorua!!. Nice beautiful garden, heaps car park, friendly place, pity I don't give 5 star because museum still closed for public.
F. J.
Beautiful. A tribute to rotorua
I. F.
Beautiful environment. Lovely scenes. Pitty museum was closed though.
M.
Sadly the museum is closed for earthquake strengthening. However the gardens are a haven of peacefulness just moments away from office and some industrial areas so it's an ideal place for a mid day de-stress
P.
Always beautiful. We attended Mid week Country Music. Great singers and Afternoon tea.
1st Wed. of the month. Put it on your calendar.
D. B.
Nice gardens with display of a Maori long boat.
A. D.
its so amazing, love the scenery
K. B.
Nice park close to the Rotorua lake. The museum is there, the Polynesian Spa is there.
U.
Must see, beautiful
H. S.
Very beautiful place to visit with family and kids. Peaceful and very clean place .
S.
Beautiful
L. M.
Great public place to walk around. The grounds are huge and there is a nice walking track around it which takes you near the lake and past some sulfur pools. The museum there is closed which we didn't realise on arrival and it sounds like it won't be open for a few years. Otherwise, great free grounds for a walk.
D. M.
The finish line for all entrants to the Tarawera Ultra 101km Race. Awesome tourist event and venue. Well hosted and friendly hospitally
D. A.
Love it as always. Beautiful gardens that change over the year.
G. L.
Too bad the Museum is still closed for repairs after the quake years ago.
C. W.
Nice walk around the lake but I did not see the mud pool.
月.
Good photo op place. The museum is closed though.
R.
Beautiful gardens....well maintained
B. S.
Nice to stroll through, kids loved playing a in park near by. We were unaware that the museum was closed and it was one of our must see attractions. Bit disappointing it was closed but understand the reasoning. Beautifully kept gardens in the grounds of the stunning Government House which unfortunately was closed for earthquake proofing.Go in the evening when the light is beautiful
l.
Great place for pictorials.
T. Z.
Museum is closed. But you may enjoy the garden for free.
P. H.
Unfortunately the museum was closed. However the gardens were great.
L. S.
A walk back in the past. Beautifully tended gardens.
P.
Beautiful place, but its all fenced off around the buildings
N.
Beautiful place, fabulous gardens. Museum is probably great, but was closed. Live music was nice.
A. W.
Even though the museum building is shut at the moment the Government Gardens are still worth a visit. The gardens and bowling green out the front are well kept and there's a good kids playground here. It's walking distance to the lakefront and Eat Street (lots of good bars and restaurants)
S. S.
The museum is closed because of concerns around the building being earthquake safe. A real pity since it is a magnificent building. There is no information on when it may open. The gardens around the building, especially the rose garden, are a visual and aesthetic treat and I would strongly recommend leisurely walks in the whole area!
R. L.
Beautiful place to relax and take in the gardens. We had a picnic under one of the big trees and the lawn area is safe for the kids to run around!
R.
Absolutely beautiful building and the gardens are awesome for photo ops especially for weddings. Highly recommend the visit
A. C.
Lovely gardens. The old government house / museum will be open again in 2021 after rebuilding is complete. Worth a visit to see it from the outside. Shirt walk to sulphur point and some neat lake side thermal activity.
A.
A shame the museum is still closed, but gardens are beautiful, lush, peaceful. The fountain and pukeko by the gazebo kept the children enthralled.
J. S.
Amazing!
Had never seen such a garden and probably will never be seeing at any other place
Fabulous!!
N. M.
Got to see this beautiful tree. A good place to walk around, take photos.
H.
Really beautiful gardens spread over a large area, this is one of the jewels of Rotorua. The woodern buildings themselves are spectacular and are the perfect backdrop for a selfie. It is also worth checking out the blue baths and the other interesting structures within the grounds. Wandering around the grounds is free and there is plenty of parking nearby. Unfortunately we couldn't go inside the main building due the earthquake strengthening work, but hopefully one day I will return to check out this inside. In the meantime even the outside is worth a visit.
M.
Rotorua’s city landscape is embellished by the wondrous Government Gardens. Situated within a short walk from downtown, the gardens are surrounded by an interesting mix of heritage sights and modern sporting facilities. Rotorua Museum, which is housed in a former Bath House right on the premises, offers free guided tours of Government Gardens at 11am and 2pm respectively. The museum itself is currently closed for earthquake strengthening.
D. H.
Beautiful place to visit. We had a lovely walk around with our dogs. The gardens are very well kept. Nice one Rotorua
J. D.
We just went to the front. It's closed. But it looks great.
J. C.
I first visited several years ago in 2011. It was just as I remembered, so pretty and a photographer's dream. Lush greenery beautiful flora. Disappointing to see the Museum closed and surrounded with fencing. It has been deemed vulnerable should there be any earthquake activity. A local told us it had been closed for a year and a half. Luckily it can be strengthened although nothing appears to be happening with it at present. The museum is a wonderful building. Find the money if you can it's a wonderful asset. I hope on our next visit from the UK, to see the museum reopened and earning it's keep as part of this lovely visitor attraction.
S.
Stunning garden's and sculptures
C. J. L.
Good place to visit if it's nice outside. There are a couple of things to see (gardens, buildings...).
Easy walk since the grown is plat (no hills) and the paths are nice. You can visit this place in under 30 minutes.
I removed a star since the museum is close, so there are big fences around which on top of not being able to visit, it ruins the pictures.
Close to the geysers, go and visit those!!
K.
I actually love the government gardens. But they still have a lot closed off. Stop updating the lakefront and rebuild the museum!
J.
All things are beautiful, the flowers, gardens, buildings, highly recommended
i.
Beautiful place to walk and enjoy
K.
Always a good place to visit whatever the weather. Picnic with the family, or just doing one of the walks it's a beautiful place year round.
B.
Nicely kept gardens with lots of space for activities
B.
It's usually peaceful, and always presented beautifully.
Gifted to the crown by the local Iwi Ngati Whakaue as Paepaehakumanu Motutara (the pronunciation is almost phonetic).
Spring here is full of new life and colour when combined with the annual tulip festival early October.
Grounds people take great pride in their mahi / work and I give this wonderful team all the credit for making this park as beautiful as it is.
The Rotorua Museum here is currently closed for safety reasons for earthquake strengthening assessment, and requires considerable engineering requirements 2017-2020 Present.
R. M.
Nice garden but the museum remains closed
J. L.
Beautiful to wander around. Unfortunately the museum is only partly open because of earthquake damage. Go behind the museum and find the geothermal region. Fascinating but obey the signs. It can be dangerous.
L.
Beautiful place
I.
Beautiful stunning gardens. Nice place to walk around with family.
S.
Beautifully maintained. I would have loved to see inside the bath houses but unfortunately it was closed off.
P.
This is a grand place to take the family. Pack a picnic lunch and take a walk from the Polynesian spas around the lake through some beautiful brushes to the convention center. Or take the kids to the park while you wander the rose garden. A spacious area with more than enough for everyone from the little ones that want to play to teens taking pictures and mum and dad relaxing in the sun or gardens.
B.
Historic place must see😚
O.
This is a truly magnificent icon to Rotorua. Hopefully it will be restored. The grounds are picturesque, gardens well presented and manicured. A must see to all that visit. A very grand delight for the eyes.
L.
Love this place with beautiful old buildings.
A.
Beautiful gardens
H.
museum and cafe closed for upgrade, check before going.. otherwise good photo op
D. B.
Good, worth a visit if you have a spare hour or two. The nearby museum is currently closed for earthquake reinforcement and won't be open for another couple of years. You can walk from here to a harbour where you can hire boats or go on a lake cruise. The best ice cream place is nearby just opposite the harbour.
D.
Historic building and lovely gardens, although the building is having ongoing strengthening work so it is closed. Should re-open sometime in 2022.
D.
Grass and gardens neatly kept and wild pukeko roaming in harmony with visitors. A beautiful view of the museum too.
w.
One of the iconic locations in Rotorua. A must place to visit.
A.
Not a bad idea to come and visit the gardens, although there isn't too much to see in general (but it's free, so waaahey!).
Just behind the gardens are various Sulfar areas so prepare to smell hot egg everywhere... Rotten!
Still, really nice place to come visit (maybe not the best place for a picnic!)
N.
Good week maintained garden but sad part is that museum is closed. Don't go there if you are going to see the museum. Due to week structure the museum has been more or less permenantly closed. Garden is huge with ample parking and also got water spring Rachels bath is inside.
M.
So beautiful our gardens. Lots of people out and about clicking away at our vibrant garden beds. Beautiful sunny day
S. T.
Nice gardens an water features
J.
The best garden! Lush green meadows, beds of flowers. A lake with fishes. The area is well maintained and a tourist hotspot. It is a photographer's paradise!
A. H.
Nice clean well presented garden in the heart of Rotorua. Government building was under renovations when we attended at the end of 2018. Good place for a quick stroll, or picnic by the lake.
H. B.
Beautiful. The flowers there are lovely. Great for photo opportunities! Park was fun, even for adults. Great for family picinics. Very clean and well taken care of.
S. V.
Nice weather and a good day to celebrate other cultures
S.
Gardens looked nice and had a few thermal features around the area. Wished we could enter the museum building itself but a sign noted that it would be closed until further notice.
P. B.
Must-do stop on any visit to Rotorua. Lots of history, information panels, geothermal information, art, sculptures, surrounded by a well tended set of gardens that are almost always in bloom somewhere. Access to the Blue Baths, Polyspa and other facilities as well as historical features such as war memorials and cenotaphs. Great place to kick back and have a break.
K.
Beautiful gardens that are very well maintained. They're great for a picnic or a wander through. There's also a beautiful seaside area.
P. K.
Although currently closed for building maintenance, this is a great place to visit. It is well kept, and an easy walk from town and the lake. The Blue Baths are just across the lawn.
J.
Nice place to relax during hot day

A bit of thermal, the lake, nature, the museum and its design, beautiful gardens and even an area dedicated to art nearby.
Bring some food, sit and enjoy (clean up afterwards pls) and enjoy.
